MEXICO PRESIDENT BIRD FLU OUTBREAKS CANCELS TRUMP SUMMIT RAISE RISK OF PANDEMIC

Mexico’s president on scrapped a planned summit with Donald Trump in the face of insistent tweets from the U.S. president demanding Mexico pay for a border wall, a deepening rift that threatens Mexican efforts to salvage trade ties. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, responding to a Twitter message from Trump saying it would be better for him not to come to the meeting if Mexico would not pay

for the wall, said in his own tweet that he would not attend and had informed the White House of this. Trump later presented the scrapped plan as a mutual agreement. Addressing Republican members of Congress at a meeting in Philadelphia, he said he and Pena Nieto had agreed to cancel the meeting. REUTERS

The global spread of bird flu and the number of viral strains currently circulating and causing infections have reached unprecedented levels, raising the risk of a potential human outbreak, according to disease experts. Multiple outbreaks have been reported in poultry farms and wild flocks across Europe, Africa and Asia in the past three months. While most involve strains that are cur-

rently low risk for human health, the sheer number of different types, and their presence in so many parts of the world at the same time, increases the risk of viruses mixing and mutating — and possibly jumping to people. “This is a fundamental change in the natural history of influenza viruses,” Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease specialist at University of Minnesota, said of the proliferation of bird flu. A federal grand jury has indicted on 22 criminal counts an Iraq war veteran suspected of killing five people in a mass shooting at a Florida airport this month, U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday. Esteban Santiago, 26, is accused of opening fire in the baggage claim area of the Fort Lauderdale airport on Jan. 6. The charges against him include multiple counts of violence at an airport resulting in death and

injury, as well as firearms crimes. If convicted, he could be punished by life imprisonment or death. The U.S. Attorney General has not decided whether to seek a death sentence, the prosecutors office said. The indictment was returned by a federal grand jury in Broward County, Florida, where the attack occurred. REUTERS

MICROSOFT CONTINUES TO INVEST IN CYBERSECURITY

4

Microsoft will continue to invest over $1 billion annually on cybersecurity research and development in the coming years, a senior executive said. This amount does not include acquisitions Microsoft may make in the sector, Bharat Shah, Microsoft vice president of security, told Reuters on the sidelines of the firm’s BlueHat cyber security conference in Tel Aviv. “As more and

more people use cloud, that spending has to go up,” Shah said. While the number of attempted cyber attacks was 20,000 a week two or three years ago, that figure had now risen to 600,000-700,000, according to Microsoft data. Long known for its Windows software, Microsoft has shifted focus to the cloud where it is dueling with larger rival Amazon to control the still fledgling market. REUTERS

In his 1994 hit “Juicy,” Biggie Smalls raps “If you don’t know, now you know.” But on a portrait of the rapper in a new Lesley University exhibit, the line is changed just slightly enough to have a whole new meaning: “If you don’t know, you should know. Rocky Cotard, a 20-year-old junior at Lesley, created the artwork for an exhibit called “REPRESENT: Politics and Portraiture.” His is one of 15 pieces on view until Feb. 21 at the Raizes Gallery at Lesley University’s Lunder Arts Center. The exhibit prompted students to apply a personal political issue to a larger conversation, Lesley professor Matthew Cherry said. Cherry helped organize the student show as well as an accompanying exhibit called “Impolite-ic Politics.”That show will be just down the hall at Lesley’s Roberts Gallery and features three professional artists’ large-scale portrait paintings on political issues like LGBTQ rights and racial profiling. “In the past, portraits were used to represent a

person, to be a likeness for that person,” Cherry said. “But in the cases of these, the portrait is used to represent not just a person and what they look like, but an idea, a concept and a political narrative.” Cotard, a 20-year-old junior at Lesley, said that he isn’t really “political.” Not to say that his artwork isn’t’ serious, he said. But just being a black male in America right now is political, Cotard knows. He’s been thinking about topics like police brutality, and how some people are ignorant of those issues. “I feel like there are a lot of things people clearly have the avenue to know about,” such as police brutality, Cotard said, but “even though they’ve heard about it, they try to be ignorant. They try to act as though the problems don’t exist.” They should know. Moseh Tucker decided to offer to the exhibit a painting titled “King Mensa” or “King Vic,” which he said is “both a commentary on today’s influential figures within the African-American community and the lack of Black/African imagery in classic paintings.” “I tend to dive into my own subconscious when coming up with ideas for paintings,” he said of his work. Linda Danison, a 22-year-old Lesley graduate, painted her piece right after the presidential election. She remembered

so many people on campus saying that they were going to leave the country if Donald Trump was elected. “I felt really strongly that I didn’t want to be scared out of my own country or own home, a place where I have a right to be,” she said. “People should feel that way, not feel bullied by a scary time.” Her portrait in the show is of a young woman who appears to be wearing a headscarf, the words, “This is my home and you can’t scare me” overlay her image. Cherry said that the show is diverse not only in the portraits’ subjects and mediums, but in perspectives, which is what can spur powerful discussions. “The more people we add to the table, we’re able to have really broad conversations,” he said. “But if you’re excluding somebody because of race, a perceived weakness in general, a perceived moral issue with sexuality, then you’re excluding that diversity of thought.”

Boston protesters respond quickly to Trump’s sanctuary city vow Boston and surrounding cities like Cambridge and Somerville have adopted sanctuary policies. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

Boston’s immigrant community took to the streets Thursday morning in protest, less than a day after President Donald Trump vowed to crack down on communities that harbor undocumented immigrants. Boston and surrounding cities like Cambridge and Somerville offer sanctuary policies that provide protections from deportation to nonviolent, undocumented immigrants who are charged with minor offenses. On Wednesday, Trump threatened to pull federal funding from cities that provide

that kind of safe harbor to immigrants who are in the country illegally. Mayor Marty Walsh and others have vowed to uphold sanctuary policies despite the potential loss of millions in federal aid. Opponents of sanctuary city provisions contend illegal immigrants

place an unnecessary strain on state and federal resources. But this morning in East Boston, several dozen pro-immigrant demonstrators challenged that notion. Holding a 20-footlong banner with the phrase, “Un dia sin inmigrantes,” Spanish for,

“One day without immigrants,” the protestors asked commuters to envision their communities without immigrants. “If we had a boycott, if we had a general strike … one day without immigrants, what would this country look like?” protest organizer Gloribel Mota told The Boston Globe. The group was from the Boston chapter of the Cosecha Movement. There are about eight million undocumented immigrants working in the U.S., making up about 5 percent of the U.S. workforce, according to Pew Research Center data. If Trump follows through with promises of mass deportations, industries like farming and construction stand to lose 26 percent and 15 percent of workers, respectively. TOSSED OUT Judge dismisses taxi owners’ lawsuit over ride-hailing regulations A lawsuit filed by Boston taxi owners against the state was dismissed by a federal judge earlier this week in a move that Uber hails as “a victory.” The Boston Taxi Owner’s Association claimed that the commonwealth’s new law regulating ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft disadvantaged cab owners. U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton denied the association’s move for an injunction of the law, writing in his order that, “plaintiffs have not alleged that the commonwealth has revoked, suspended or impeded its ability to use its [taxi] medallions.” The Massachusetts law established different regulations for transportation network companies, or TNCs, such as Uber and Lyft, than for taxis. The association’s lawsuit claimed that was unconstitutional and harmful to their business. The Boston Taxi Owner’s Associations’ “sole claim is that the loss of market exclusivity caused by the enactment of the new TNC statute has diminished the value of their medallions,” Gorton wrote. But the taxi owners have “no

rights to market exclusivity,” he continued. “This ruling is a victory for the thousands of drivers who partner with Uber to earn flexible income and millions of riders who use Uber as an affordable, reliable way to move around the commonwealth,” an Uber representative said. The taxi owners had filed this lawsuit in September; more than 30 other Boston-area cab companies filed a similar lawsuit in December. A phone message left with the attorney for the taxi association was not immediately returned. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

A debate is under way in the Trump administration about whether the United States should declare the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization and subject it to U.S. sanctions, according to U.S. officials and people close to President Donald Trump’s transition team. A faction led by Michael Flynn, Trump’s National Security Advisor, wants to add the Brotherhood to the State Department and U.S. Treasury lists of foreign terrorist organizations, the sources said. “I know it has been discussed. I’m in favor of it,” said a Trump transition advisor, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue. The adviser said Flynn’s team discussed adding the group to the U.S. list of terrorist groups

but said it was ultimately unclear when or even if the administration ultimately would go ahead with such a move. Other Trump advisors, as well as many veteran national security, diplomatic, law enforcement and intelligence officials argue the Brotherhood has evolved peacefully in some countries, according to officials and people close to Trump’s entourage. They worry that a U.S. move to designate

the entire Brotherhood a terrorist group would complicate relations with Turkey, a key American ally in the fight against Islamic State, and where the Islamist-rooted AKP Party that dominates the Turkish government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in power. Tunisia’s Islamist Ennahda Party has also participated in democratic elections. The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, the country’s oldest Islamist movement, was designated as a terrorist organization in that country in 2013. It is not clear which faction within the U.S. administration has the upper hand, and Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart this month introduced legislation to add the Brotherhood to the terrorist list. REUTERS

Crisis deepens as Trump floats 20 percent tax on Mexico goods to pay for wall Mexico ships 80 percent of its exports to the US, and around half of Mexico’s foreign direct investment has come from its northern neighbor over the last two decades. President Donald Trump could pay for a wall on the southern border with a new 20 percent tax on goods from Mexico, the White House said on Thursday, deepening a crisis after plans for a summit with the Mexican president fell apart. Trump wants the measure to be part of a broad-

er tax overhaul package that the U.S. Congress is contemplating, White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters on Thursday. It was not immediately clear how the tax would work. Parts of the proposal that Spicer described resemble an existing idea, known as a border adjustment tax, being considered by the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives. Spicer said: “We have a new tax at $50 billion at 20 percent of imports — which is, by the way, a practice that 160 other countries do right now.â€? â€œOur country’s policy is to tax exports and let imports flow freely in,

which is ridiculous. But by doing it that way we can do $10 billion a year and easily pay for the wall. Just through that mechanism alone,â€? Spicer told reporters traveling with Trump to Philadelphia. The White House later on Thursday said it was not endorsing the border adjustment tax. No further details were available. Addressing Republican members of Congress at a meeting in Philadelphia, Trump said he and Pena Nieto had agreed to cancel the meeting, adding it would be fruitless if Mexico did not treat the United States “fairlyâ€?. “I’ve said many times that the American people United South End Settlements Harriet Tubman House 566 Columbus Avenue Boston, MA 02118

Mexico has long insisted it will not

heed Trump’s demands to pay for the construction project. The United States runs a $58.8 billion trade deficit with Mexico, according to the latest U.S. government figures. But Mexico is also the United States’ second-largest export market. Former foreign minister Jorge Castaneda said the Mexican government should have canceled the

WORLD MBA

MBA or EMBA: Which one’s right for you? Know the facts before you apply.

Often, the executive MBA (EMBA) is misconstrued to be a superior form of MBA study, but the truth is the two degrees hold equal cachet on graduation. What does set them apart is their purpose and delivery format, factors which lead to entirely different experiences. Here are some points to consider in your decision-making process and when meeting with schools at fairs, like the QS World MBA tour, to discuss options.

Program pace, length & curriculum Metaphorically speaking, while an EMBA can be seen as a series of sprints, the MBA can be likened to a marathon. Though program length will vary by school, the principal difference is that the EMBA is always part-time to accommodate working professionals. Typically, some of the learning takes place by distance and/or online, while in-person EMBA classes are held on weekends, evenings or even at different locations around the world. For example, UCLA Anderson offers two EMBA options: one fully in-person and the other split between half in-person, half online. Both options require all students to complete a one-week international component. While both EMBA and MBA curricula cover the same core material, EMBA programs tend to offer fewer electives. As such, MBA students will often enjoy more freedom when selecting classes, with the possibility of taking a concentration/ specialization or track. However, there are also targeted EMBAs, such as Yale’s program focusing on health care, or the University of Miami’s EMBA aimed at NFL stars.

Admissions requirements Another difference between the two degrees is that they are catered to professionals at different stages in their career. EMBAs are designed for managers with extensive prior work experience, generally in the range of 10 to 15 years, substantially more than the three to five years usually held by MBA candidates. Full-time MBA admissions also place more emphasis on GMAT scores as a way to help differentiate candidates during the selection process. EMBA admissions, on the other hand, often do not require standardized entrance exam scores, although some EMBA programs, such as Columbia Business School, allow you to take a new EMBA-oriented version of the GMAT. Additionally, for the EMBA, it’s especially important for proof that you have support from your current employer as work-study balance will impact on program success.

Choose the best option for you. Register for the QS World MBA tour at topmba.com/metro. ISTOCK

Return on investment Both MBA and EMBA candidates can expect a salary increase upon graduation. EMBA graduates saw an average salary boost of 12 percent, according to a 2016 survey of U.S. programs by EMBAC. MBAs, by comparison — with much more to gain as they tend to be earlier on in their careers — saw an increase of 75 percent in compensation postgraduation, according to a 2015 QS ROI (return on investment) report looking at the U.S. and Canada. Of course, degree format also has significant financial implications here. EMBA students earn a full-time salary while studying and don’t incur the same costs associated with relocation for a full-time MBA program. VISNJA MILIDRAGOVIC

Milla Jovovich makes her sixth bow as Alice, the hero of the “Resident Evil” series, with “The Final Chapter” (which allegedly really is). ILZE KITSHOFF

Queen of the Dead Milla Jovovich swears “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” is the end of zombie-killing Alice.

THE FUN STARTS HERE TANIA MORENO @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Milla Jovovich is playing favorites. She’s asked which “Resident Evil” she prefers. “Undoubtedly, it’s this one,” she says. It’s her sixth go as Alice, the security operativeturned-hero against both the zombie revolution and the bioengineering corporation that caused it. In the first entry, from 2001, Alice awoke with amnesia. Every film has found her battling the undead and company minions, all while searching for the truth of her past. That, apparently, arrives in “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,” which is what draws the

actress (and musician, model and fashion designer) to it. “I love that Alice finally discovers her own story and who she really is.” As the franchise’s (alleged!) swan song, the experience couldn’t help but be bittersweet. “I met my husband making that movie. Now I have two beautiful kids,” Jovovich says of the first, while referring to filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson. The two wed in 2009, and he’s now directed her in not only four of the “R.E.” films, but also 2011’s “The Three Musketeers,” in which she played the villainous Milady. Jovovich and Anderson’s first daughter, Ever Anderson, makes an appearance in “The Final Chapter,” playing the

Milla’s serious side Jovovich should be fine in her post-Alice career. As often as she’s been cast in action, she’s proved a formidable talent when given the chance to play it straight. She earned accolades for 2010’s “Stone,” as the wife of a jailed arsonist played by Edward Norton (the one where he has cornrows), and she did Shakespeare in 2014’s modernized film take on “Cymbeline.” She also has second-billing in “Shock and Awe,” Rob Reiner’s forthcoming drama about the Bush administration’s false allegations that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.

evil Red Queen. “I’m very proud of her,” Jovovich says. “There’s nothing more magical than sharing the set with your daughter.” The actress, now 41, finds it tricky balancing motherhood with her status as one of the screen’s great ass-kickers. When she was shooting this last film back in 2015, she had just given birth to her second

daughter, Dashiel Edan. “It was definitely a big challenge to go into superheroine mode, then go back to the role of mom,” she says. “It was a bit more difficult than it usually is for me to lose weight and get in shape to be Alice. But I worked harder to achieve it. I followed a very strict diet that worked. But I have to say, at first I thought, ‘Wow, this is never going

to happen.’” Still, Jovovich will always find Alice to be an inspiration. “When I wake up in the mornings and do not feel my best, I can pull out my inner Alice to keep me going in the right direction,” she says. And she swears “The Final Chapter” really is the final chapter. “It completes the circle of the story,” she explains. “No matter how hard it is to say goodbye, I have to do it.” GETTY IMAGES

In “Gold,” Matthew McConaughey’s gut hangs over his tighty whities. He’s hardly an Adonis when dressed, either: As floundering businessman Kenny Wells, our star sweats through grotty beige-on-white suits. His stringy hair is hand-combed back over a balding top. His teeth are piss-yellow from a lifetime smoking Winstons. It’s not a mere actor’s stunt, though. At the same time, it’s not all that special either. Kenny’s just another of McConaughey’s charismatic motormouths. He may be more desperate, more sweet-on-theinside, more of a loser. But he’s simply a slight variation — a lot of work to do something that’s only similar-but-different. McConaughey’s turn is emblematic of “Gold” as a whole. This is a noble misfire that tries to do something fresh with the familiar but can’t quite get there. It has the makings of a classic rise-and-fall horror show: Based on a real tale of greedy superhubris, it drops in on Kenny, a never-was who drove his father’s

An unholy marriage of “The Idiot’s Guide to Existentialism” and Animal Planet’s “Too Cute!” shows, “A Dog’s Purpose” stars the voice of Josh Gad as a reincarnating dog spirit who opens the film by asking, “What is the meaning of life?” The movie seems to supply an answer: It immediately cuts to newborn puppies. But a more thoughtful (but not that thoughtful) response takes another two hours to arrive. Till then, witness the strangest studio picture since “Collateral Beauty,” which ambitiously ponders the cosmos amidst a plethora of dog POV shots, like one that allows us to witness butt-sniffing first-hand, and another where we get to see what it’s like to die. To its credit, “A Dog’s Purpose” is tough for PG-rated pet porn. The first death comes within the first minute. Gad’s free-floating mutt keeps coming back, though, spending the longest stretch in the 1960s, where he inhabits a

Nevada mining business so into the ground that the offices have relocated to the local dive bar. He strikes gold — almost literally! — when he learns about a cache of the stuff lurking in the depths of the Indonesian jungle. He’s quick to lure Wall Street goons and untold investors with tales of his potential haul — so quick, in fact, that he’s living like Scarface before they know 100 percent that there is, in fact, gold. Hilarity eventually ensues. It would have been easy to play this as a “Wolf of Wall Street” knockoff. Kudos to Team “Gold” for trying something

different. “Gold” treats Kenny as both fool and hero, with a tone that shifts from satirical to serious, scathing to sad. But even with Kenny in every scene, “Gold” never quite gels. It meanders, it fumbles around for focus. Its most interesting ideas get lost in the murk. And poor McConaughey: Time and again he goes to 11 while the juiceless filmmaking leaves him stranded in bland shots. It all (sort of) comes together with the twist closer, but “Gold” is like a long con in which the grifter keeps losing the mark’s attention. MATT PRIGGE

golden retriever named Bailey who declares “ownership” of a young boy. (Ha ha, it’s the other way around, isn’t it? Makes you think.) He’ll age and die, or he’ll get shot by a slimy kidnapper and die, only to return each instance as a pup, ready to go again. One time he even switches genders, like a mongrel version of Virginia Woolf’s “Orlando,” only with more farting dog jokes. Throughout, our canine hero asks the big questions, though the answers tend to make “Chicken Soup for the Soul” seem like a J.G. Ballard dystopia. The movie may

ultimately and unexpectedly turn into a Nicholas Sparks movie — it figures, since director Lasse Hallstrom made two Sparks films, as well as “My Life as a Dog” and “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” — but “A Dog’s Purpose” is more like “Forrest Gump” but with dogs. After two hours of embracing the inevitability of death as a way of coping with a potentially meaningless void, it peddles the Gumpian line that perhaps not thinking is the way to a happier life. But dammit if it still sporadically stabs right at the heart of anyone who grew up with a pet, despite itself. MP

Many are familiar with F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald’s tragic yet passionate love story: the glamorous parties and literary successes; the alcoholism and mental illness. But the lesser-told tale comes from Zelda’s perspective. An Amazon series, “Z: The Beginning of Everything, starring Christina Ricci as the vivacious Southern belle with a creative streak, shows us the infamous couple through Zelda’s eyes. Ricci, who also execu-

tive produces, says she was inspired to portray Zelda after reading “Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler, a fictionalized account of the Fitzgeralds that positions Zelda as the narrator. Ricci talks with us about debunking the mythos of Zelda, the bunk notion of the “hysterical woman and how she couldn’t get enough of that “black velvet and diamonds. What will viewers learn about Zelda from watching the show? So many things. She was not an alcoholic; she just partied. [Scott] was the alcoholic. When you go back and read the biographies, she was always helping him through

these periods of being sober. I didn’t realize how much of his writing was hers; I had no idea. I also thought that she was schizophrenic — [but there’s] no evidence of schizophrenia whatsoever. How much of her diagnosis was due to the sexism of the time? Well, one thing I’ve always found fascinating is a lot of the women you read about in history all had nervous

Dark days ahead with the Dead of Winter The Brattle Theatre presents a weeklong celebration of the occult.

If you go Jan. 27-Feb. 2 Brattle Theatre 40 Brattle St., Cambridge Tickets and schedule at brattlefilm.org

SEAN M BURNS @SeanMBurns letters@metro.us

The witching hour is upon us at the Brattle Theatre. Beginning tonight, Dead of Winter: Cinema of the Occult is a weeklong celebration of black magic at the movies, offering panel discussions, multimedia presentations and a dozen films depicting dark rituals and necromancy — everything from Kim Novak bewitching Jimmy Stewart in 1958’s “Bell, Book & Candle” to unholy bonds with a goat named Black Phillip in last year’s indie smash, “The Witch.” The Brattle’s creative director Ned Hinkle enlisted three of his favorite writers to co-curate the series: Cambridge’s own Peter Bebergal, author of “Season of the Witch: How the Occult Saved

Rock and Roll”; Phantasmaphile blogger Pam Grossman, who teaches magical practice and history in New York; and Janka Stucky, founder of the local independent press Black Ocean. “This series has been slowly percolating for over a year at this point,” Hinkle explains. “It’s origins go back to when I

met Peter at a book signing back in the fall of 2015, but it really began to take shape when Janaka contacted me about bringing Pam up for our ‘Belladonna of Sadness’ screenings last spring.” Indeed, the recently restored, boldly explicit 1973 Japanese animated film returns to the Brattle for a late show on Sat-

urday night, following a screening of last year’s “The Love Witch,” a slyly feminist subversion of kitschy 1960s sexploitation flicks. Grossman kicks off the evening with her multimedia presentation “What Is a Witch: Female Magic and Transgression in Pictures.” Brattle regulars won’t be surprised to find Clive

Barker’s “Lord of Illusions” on the schedule. “A guilty pleasure of mine,” admits Hinkle of the 1995 thriller starring Scott Bakula as a paranormal private eye. “It is kind of a silly movie but the magic in it is compelling and, since it’s a Clive Barker adaptation, the themes are surprisingly sinister.” Stucky closes out the

series on Thursday night, introducing a 35 mm print of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s sacrilegious headtrip “The Holy Mountain.” But we’re most excited for Wednesday’s screening of Ken Russell’s rarely shown “The Devils.” A rather forceful argument for the separation of church and state, this blasphemous extravaganza stars Oliver Reed as a philandering priest accused of witchcraft in 17th century France while Vanessa Redgrave plays the hunchbacked nun under his spell. The movie went out with an X rating back in 1971 and time has done nothing to tame its wicked ways. Bring your own broom.

Preservation of characters Bombino puts a Western spin on Tuareg rock. CHRIS LEO PALERMINO @indiecalp letters@metro.us

Bombino, the Nigerbased musician nee Omara Moctar, fell in love with the guitar as a child refugee living in Algeria. “The guitar to me represented freedom and it became my only dream, he says. Now 37, Bombino has made recording and performing Tuareg rock across the globe

his calling. Like fellow Tuareg musicians, his masterful guitar skills reflect influences from Jimi Hendrix as well as techniques translated from a traditional lute and a one-stringed bowed instrument called the imzad. For “Azel, his fifth record, Bombino channels Bob Marley for a style he calls “Tuareggae. Ahead of his show Saturday as part of CRASHfest, we interviewed the singer/guitarist through a translator. On the record, you also added Western harmo-

nies and organ with Dave Longstreth’s help. How do these elements help shape the songs? I think this helps to introduce my music to new audiences. There are elements of our music and music in the West that are really not the same, and things like harmonies and organ can help to act like forms of translation of the music. Can you explain some of the Tuareg social and political issues that you sing about? That’s a very big question. Each song deals with a different subject. Some are about respect, about fraternity, about love of your wife or your family, about remember-

ing your history and your culture. These are just some of the issues found in the lyrics on “Azel. As a Tuareg ambassador to America, what should we know about your culture? My culture is threatened. It is like an endangered culture, you can say, because more and more Tuareg people are leaving for the West and even those remaining, many are forgetting the values and traditions of our culture. We have a beautiful culture. Some of the best art and music and dance and food and also moral values belong to us. It would be very sad for all of humanity to lose these things.

If you ever wanted to order a cheeseburger void of any human interaction, then McDonald’s has a solution for you! A Big Mac ATM will pop up at the chain’s Kenmore Square location on Jan. 31. The automated hamburger dispensary will serve the Big Mac in three sizes: regular, Mac Jr. and the Grand Mac. And they’re free. For those of us living under a rock, here’s what’s on a Big Mac (feel free to sing along): Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun. The magic of the Big Mac ATM comes from its ability to pop out burgers without any visible staff or kitchen attached. Just pick the Big Mac of your choice from the touchscreen, tweet your swag

and boom: free burger. The Grand Mac features larger buns and patties, while the Mac Jr. is a single patty burger. Neither make for good songs, but they’re likely just as tasty. How exactly this will be pulled off? We received the following via Vincent Spadea, local McDonald’s owner/operator, “We can’t give away all the secrets, but fresh Macs will be constantly loaded into the machine to ensure a high quality experience. The ATM was originally slated to appear on the Huntington Bridge but citing overwhelming demand, McDonald’s relocated. Reps will still be on the bridge, however, handing out vouchers for free burgers. Get the Big Mac of your liking on the house on Jan. 31 from 11 a.m.2 p.m., while supplies last. RACHEL RACZKA

BRADY AND BELICHICK CONTINUE TO DRIVE THEIR CRITICS NUTS OPINION

DANNY PICARD @dannypicard

They can’t wait for it to happen. It’s what everybody outside of New England wants to see. The impending demise of the Patriots. Only a matter of time, they try to tell me. For this success can’t possibly last forever. They’re right about that “forever” part. One day, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady will be bronzed in Canton, and we here in New England will once again know what it feels like to not be in the AFC Championship and have no shot at a Lombardi Trophy. But they continue to be wrong about their timetable for the apocalypse. Back in July, you had a national sports personality proclaim that Brady was “just about done.” While he was serving his four-game Deflategate suspension, you had multiple NFL columnists tweeting about how the Patriots should trade Brady because of Jimmy Garoppolo’s early success. The madness didn’t

stop there. When linebacker Jamie Collins was traded to the Cleveland Browns for a compensatory draft pick during the Week 9 bye, some analysts — national and local — were convinced this was the move that would do them in. Then, two weeks later, they made defensive end Jabaal Sheard a healthy scratch and held him back in Boston while the team traveled to play the 49ers in San Francisco. A week after that, Rob Gronkowski injured his back in Week 12 against the New York Jets and was placed on seasonending injured reserve following back surgery. It was the perfect storm for those who despise the New England Patriots. But just as I told you they would, Belichick and Brady weathered the storm, and finished the regular season with the best record in the NFL at 14-2. That must drive people nuts. Because what they have to accept is that, as long as Belichick and Brady are both running the ship, a Titaniclike catastrophe of which they dream about will never happen, no matter how much they try to tell us it will.

Because, if their tales of imminent doom were ever going to ring true, it would have been this season. I mean, how many teams would be able to survive a four-game suspension for their star quarterback to begin the year, trading one of their best defensive players in the middle of the season, and losing one of the league’s most dominant receivers in the final weeks? The answer is: only one, the Patriots. No matter how bad things seem to be going in Foxboro, Belichick and Brady always find a way to rise above. And yet, the NFL’s talking heads will continue to tell us that their next problem will be the one that ends this magical run for good. Well, I’ve got some bad news for them. The Patriots are already the favorite to win next year’s Super Bowl. And as long as Belichick and Brady are still in New England, that’s not going to change. Listen to “The Danny Picard Show” at dannypicard.com, iTunes, and Google Play. Danny can also be heard weekends on WEEI 93.7 FM. Follow him on Twitter @DannyPicard.

Quickly fixed C’s with busy stretch ahead The Celtics will now play five games in seven days. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

The Celtics rebounded quickly from one of their ugliest stretches of the season Wednesday night when they dumped James Harden and the Rockets 120-109 at the Garden. Prior to the victory over Houston, the C’s had dropped three straight (two at home to sub.500 teams) and there was some in-fighting between Marcus Smart and the C’s coaching staff. Less than 24 hours after the Smart blowup, though, the Celts turned in one of their more impressive performances of the season in beating the 34-15 Rockets (the third seed in the rugged Western Conference). Everything seemed to be smoothed over when

Al Horford and the Celtics will host Orlando on Friday night. NBAE/GETTY IMAGES

it came to Smart, as he played the most minutes of any Celtics bench player against Houston, with 31 minutes on the floor. He apologized for the in-

cident prior to the Houston game. “To my coaching staff and my teammates and the Celtics organization — I apologize for my

actions [against Washington],” Smart tweeted out. “In hating to lose, my actions were childish and unprofessional and never under any

circumstances do I have the right to act that way and for that I sincerely apologize. I’m a role model to kids and a player for coach. I’m sorry.”

Smart was a plus-12, with seven points, six assists and four rebounds Wednesday against the Rockets. The Celtics’ starting point guard, Isaiah Thomas, was again brilliant against Houston — pumping in 38 points. Boston’s little engine hasn’t scored less than 24 points in a game in 2017. The Celtics won’t get much rest in the coming week as they’ll play five games in seven nights. The stretch begins Friday (7:30 p.m., CSNNE) at home against Orlando (18-29) and then the C’s will hop on a jet to play at Milwaukee (2124) the next night. The Celtics would be wise to grab Ws against both below-.500 teams if they want to creep into one of the top two spots in the East standings. First place Cleveland had lost three games in a row and second place Toronto had lost five games in a row heading into play Thursday night.

Taurus Your emotions will be difficult to control if you don’t like what’s happening around you. Don’t jump to conclusions. Strive to make personal gains independently.

Scorpio Making travel plans or digging for information that will help you follow a dream looks promising. Check out different cultures to find what you are looking for.

Gemini If you go with the flow, you will reach your destination. A chance to bring about positive personal change is within reach, as long as you limit your spending.

Sagittarius Use your intelligence and integrity to help you get what you want and need. If you try to avoid matters that need to be addressed, nothing will be gained.

Cancer Invest in something that will promote you and what you have to offer. An imaginative approach to something you want to pursue will be regarded as brilliant.

Capricorn Your experience will help you sidestep a pitfall that you’ve previously faced. Your intuitive intelligence won’t let you down. Romance should be a priority.

Leo Older and younger people in your life will offer insight into a dilemma you face. Taking the advice they offer will lead to good fortune and better relationships.

Aquarius You should question both your and other people’s motives. Do your own thing. Know what you want and don’t stop until you get it. Change will lead to happiness.

Virgo Put your money behind your ideas. The detailed and colorful way you present what you have to offer will make it difficult for anyone to turn you down.

Pisces If someone tries to make your life difficult, look for a way to distance yourself. Being able to bounce back will lead to your success. EUGENIA LAST
