MEXICO PRESIDENT BIRD FLU OUTBREAKS CANCELS TRUMP SUMMIT RAISE RISK OF PANDEMIC

Mexico’s president on scrapped a planned summit with Donald Trump in the face of insistent tweets from the U.S. president demanding Mexico pay for a border wall, a deepening rift that threatens Mexican efforts to salvage trade ties. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, responding to a Twitter message from Trump saying it would be better for him not to come to the meeting if Mexico would not pay
for the wall, said in his own tweet that he would not attend and had informed the White House of this. Trump later presented the scrapped plan as a mutual agreement. Addressing Republican members of Congress at a meeting in Philadelphia, he said he and Pena Nieto had agreed to cancel the meeting. REUTERS

The global spread of bird flu and the number of viral strains currently circulating and causing infections have reached unprecedented levels, raising the risk of a potential human outbreak, according to disease experts. Multiple outbreaks have been reported in poultry farms and wild flocks across Europe, Africa and Asia in the past three months. While most involve strains that are cur-
rently low risk for human health, the sheer number of different types, and their presence in so many parts of the world at the same time, increases the risk of viruses mixing and mutating — and possibly jumping to people. “This is a fundamental change in the natural history of influenza viruses,” Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease specialist at University of Minnesota, said of the proliferation of bird flu. MICROSOFT CONTINUES TO INVEST IN CYBERSECURITY

Microsoft will continue to invest over $1 billion annually on cybersecurity research and development in the coming years, a senior executive said. This amount does not include acquisitions Microsoft may make in the sector, Bharat Shah, Microsoft vice president of security, told Reuters on the sidelines of the firm’s BlueHat cyber security conference in Tel Aviv. “As more and
more people use cloud, that spending has to go up,” Shah said. While the number of attempted cyber attacks was 20,000 a week two or three years ago, that figure had now risen to 600,000-700,000, according to Microsoft data. Long known for its Windows software, Microsoft has shifted focus to the cloud where it is dueling with larger rival Amazon to control the still fledgling market. REUTERS

Common’s newest co-living space Baltic in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn ALL IMAGES BESS ADLER
Are communal communities the future of NYC real estate? “This is something people are doing not out of economic necessity ... but out of preference.” ANNIE NOVA @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
In the 1960s, groups of hippies fled from cities to live on rural communes. Now there’s a growing movement of communal living right here in New York City. “I feel the biggest challenge in our world today is we’re not speaking to each other,” said Ryan Fix, who started 25 communal living sites in New York City and a lab in France that studies co-living. “If we’re able to curate a group from all walks of life, this will be hugely transformative for the world.” In the last couple of years in New York City, a system called “co-living” has taken off, with a number of companies converting office buildings and townhomes into com-
munal living hubs where former strangers can live together, share meals, attend movie nights and do yoga side-by-side. Some real estate professionals are skeptical, while others say it’s too soon to know if co-living has a future, but it’s a model that seems to fulfill a human need that an apartment listed on Craigslist never could. “People don’t want to live in anonymity,” said Brad Hargreaves, CEO of Common, which operates four co-living sites in Brooklyn. Since 2015, he’s received 12,000 applications from people wanting to join his communities. Hargreaves said his model isn’t about transforming the world, but refining an already-popular housing model: living with roommates. “We’re not creating a new way of living,” he said. “We’re taking the way people already live and making it nicer and more reliable.” Still, there are notable differences between coliving and sharing an

apartment with roommates. For example, at Common’s newest co-living site, Baltic in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, 145 people will all belong to a membership that will provide them the chance to connect through events like weekly brunches. “We’re bringing the entire building together,” Hargreaves said. However, some of these communities are very selective about whom
they bring together. “We benefit from a high demand, which means we can take high-quality members,” said Ben Smith, head of growth and community at Founder’s House, which operates five coliving sites across the city. “Things we look for in a candidate is someone who really wants to make a difference in the world. Our members are working toward bettering humanity
as a whole.” For those accepted, there’s a family-style dinner for residents every Sunday. The common areas are supplied with games like chess and Monopoly. Rents are not cheap. Benjamin Seebaugh, 25, a project manager for the city’s Department of Corrections, moved to New York City from West Virginia after graduating college. At first, he said he lived in a “traditional place,” with roommates in Hell’s Kitchen. His bedroom in Manhattan cost him $1,100 a month. Now he’s paying $1,550 for a bedroom in a co-living house with 19 other people in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. But, he said, companionship is priceless. “The common theme among all of us is we wanted to make friends,” Seebaugh said. “This is something people are doing not out of economic necessity,” Hargreaves said, “but out of preference.” But the high prices are causing some real estate

Rev. Jesse Jackson: We are the wind that steers the ship’ Voter suppression could be Trump’s motive for his voter fraud charge, Jackson says. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork
amanda.mikelberg@metro.us
The Rev. Jesse Jackson met with Metro to discuss the condition of post-election race relations and political activism in President Donald Trump’s new political climate. Jackson arrived in New York to prepare for a summit on the 20th anniversary of his founding of The Wall Street Project and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, to be held at the Grand Hyatt New York Feb. 15-17. Here are excerpts from the conversation, which have been edited and condensed.
motive. He uses the language of fraud, but in fact he may be laying the groundwork to be getting the governors in this search to start making even more suppressive tactics for those who have been locked out. What we really should do is fight for an amendment to the Constitution to federally protect the right to vote. We have state’s right to vote, each with their own ideal. We should have one federal standard.
Have the objectives of the Wall Street Project and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition changed with the election of President Trump? For so long we were not even considered in the arrangement. Black people should be able to prosper. We grow with the economy — but we need to have access to capital. There is not a talent crisis, there’s been an opportunity crisis and a cultural crisis. We need to bring those cultural barriers down.
What needs to be done to repair racial divisions? There is a lot of fear out there. There is a lot of Mexican youth that fear their parents will be deported. They must relieved of those fears. Women who feel their rights are being violated, they must be relieved of those fears. The attempt to say Barack Obama wasn’t born here, that deserves an apology. So that becomes the burden of President Trump. And on the other hand, we can’t wait for that to happen. Last Saturday’s historic massive march showed people turned fear into hope, and impetus into power. At the end of the day, while Trump is the captain of the ship, the winds of change will determine which way the ship goes. We represent those winds of change.
Did the election widen race divisions? The last election was not about voter fraud; it was about voter suppression. They [the Department of Justice] found in Texas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan evidence of voter suppression. [Trump’s] claim of three to five million fraudulent votes — that’s not accurate. That’s alternative truth. It’s a double
How will the rapid repeal of the Affordable Health Care act affect Americans? Thirty-million people never had health care before. The irony is that most beneficiaries of affordable health care are Trump supporters. It was labeled Obamacare for pejorative purposes. They don’t want Obamacare, but they want affordable health care. Actor Shia LaBeouf found himself divided from his anti-Trump performance art installation in Queens early Thursday morning after an alleged altercation with a Nazi, according to the piece’s Twitter account. Moments later, he was in handcuffs. LaBeouf unveiled the 24/7 piece “He Will Not Divide Us” outside the Museum of the Moving Image on Friday, just before Donald Trump was sworn in as president. The actor vows to keep the installation, which encourages the public to say, “He will not divide us” into a camera, for the next four years or “the duration of the presidency.” In a video posted to Twitter, an attendee is seen posing with LaBeouf before saying, “Hitler did nothing wrong.” LaBeouf, who is Jewish, is seen shoving the unidentified man before walking away. Police said the video is

not related to LaBeouf’s arrest, but it was a part of the altercation that escalated into a “shouting match,” the New York Daily News reported. The actor reportedly tore a scarf off a 25-yearold man, scratching his neck in the process, before pushing the man to the ground. LaBeouf was charged with misdemeanor assault and harassment. He was later released and got into a cab as he yelled, “He will not divide us!” While LaBeouf was in custody, the installation’s Twitter account
was immediately flooded with tweets encouraging its followers to call the NYPD’s 114th Precinct, where the actor was taken, to demand his release for defending himself against “a Nazi.” “Shia was attacked by a Nazi. Shia got arrested. Nazi got away. This is Trump’s America,” one tweet said. The incident wasn’t LaBeouf’s first run-in with the law. He was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal mischief in 2014 for allegedly creating a disturbance at a Broadway performance of “Cabaret.”

Mexico ships 80 percent of its exports to the US, and around half of Mexico’s foreign direct investment has come from its northern neighbor over the last two decades. President Donald Trump could pay for a wall on the southern border with a new 20 percent tax on goods from Mexico, the White House said on Thursday, deepening a crisis after plans for a summit with the Mexican president fell apart. Trump wants the measure to be part of a broader tax overhaul package that the U.S. Congress is contemplating, White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters on Thursday. It was not immediately clear how the tax would work. Parts of the proposal that Spicer described resemble an existing idea, known as a border adjustment tax, being considered by the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives. Spicer said: “We have a new tax at $50 billion at 20 percent of imports — which is, by the way, a practice that 160 other countries do right now.â€?Â
“There is an atmosphere of crisis in the United States and it is going to last a long time. We are going to have to get used to living like this. Castaneda
“Our country’s policy is to tax exports and let imports flow freely in, which is ridiculous. But by doing it that way we can do $10 billion a year and easily pay for the wall. Just through that mechanism alone, Spicer told reporters traveling with Trump to Philadelphia. The White House later on Thursday said it was not endorsing the border adjustment tax. No further details were available. Addressing Republican members of Congress at a meeting in Philadelphia, Trump said he and Pena Nieto had agreed to cancel the meeting, adding it would be fruitless if Mexico did not treat the United States “fairly. “I’ve said many times that the American people will not pay for the wall, Trump told the gathering. “Unless Mexico is going to treat the United States fairly, with respect, such a meeting would be fruitless and I want to go a different route.
Trump views the wall, a major promise during his election campaign, as part of a package of measures to curb illegal immigration. Mexico has long insisted it will not heed Trump’s demands to pay for the construction project. The United States runs a $58.8 billion trade deficit with Mexico, according to the latest U.S. government figures. But Mexico is also the United States’ second-largest export market. Former foreign minister Jorge Castaneda said the Mexican government should have canceled the summit earlier in the week, when it became clear that Trump was going to go ahead with measures to build the wall and clamp down on immigration. “There is an atmosphere of crisis in the United States and it is going to last a long time. We are going to have to get used to living like this, he said on Mexican radio. REUTERS

Expecting Trump action, US suspends refugee resettlement interviews The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has temporarily halted trips by staff to interview refugees abroad as it prepares for a likely shakeup of refugee policy by President Donald Trump, two sources with knowledge of the decision said on Thursday. The decision effectively amounts to a pause in future refugee admissions, given that the interviews are a crucial step in an often years-long process. The DHS leadership’s decision to halt the interview trips was communicated to those involved in the U.S. refugee admission process on Wednesday, one of the sources said. It means that though Trump has not yet ordered a temporary halt to the refugee program,

future admissions are likely to be delayed. Trump is expected to sign an executive order that would include a temporary ban on all refugees, and a suspension of visas for citizens of Syria and six other Middle Eastern and African countries. White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters on Thursday that Trump could sign several executive orders on Friday, but that the nature of those had not been decided yet. Becca Heller, director
of the International Refugee Assistance Project at the New York-based Urban Justice Center, said she was informed of the decision to halt the overseas interviews by several people in and outside of government. Gillian Christensen, a spokeswoman for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security and which conducts the interviews, said the agency had delayed “a number of upcoming trips but that they had not been “officially canceled. DHS officers regularly visit countries such as Jordan, Malaysia, El Salvador, Kenya and Ethiopia to interview refugees seeking to enter the United States. It is usually one of the last steps in the refugee resettlement process. REUTERS

WORLD MBA
MBA or EMBA: Which one’s right for you? Know the facts before you apply.
Often, the executive MBA (EMBA) is misconstrued to be a superior form of MBA study, but the truth is the two degrees hold equal cachet. What does set them apart is their purpose and delivery format, factors which lead to entirely different experiences. Here are some points to consider in your decision-making process and when meeting with schools at fairs, like the QS World MBA tour, to discuss options.
Program pace, length & curriculum Metaphorically speaking, while an EMBA can be seen as a series of sprints, the MBA can be likened to a marathon. Though program length will vary by school, the principal difference is that the EMBA is always part-time to accommodate working professionals. Typically, some of the learning takes place by distance and/or online, while in-person EMBA classes are held on weekends, evenings or even at different locations around the world. For example, UCLA Anderson offers two EMBA options: one fully in-person and the other split between half in-person, half online. Both options require all students to complete a one-week international component. While both EMBA and MBA curricula cover the same core material, EMBA programs tend to offer fewer electives. As such, MBA students will often enjoy more freedom when selecting classes, with the possibility of taking a concentration/ specialization or track. However, there are also targeted EMBAs, such as Yale’s program focusing on health care, or the University of Miami’s EMBA aimed at NFL stars.
Admissions requirements Another difference between the two degrees is that they are catered to professionals at different stages in their career. EMBAs are designed for managers with extensive prior work experience, generally in the range of 10 to 15 years, substantially more than the three to five years usually held by MBA candidates. Full-time MBA admissions also place more emphasis on GMAT scores as a way to help differentiate candidates during the selection process. EMBA admissions, on the other hand, often do not require standardized entrance exam scores, although some EMBA programs, such as Columbia Business School, allow you to take a new EMBA-oriented version of the GMAT. Additionally, for the EMBA, it’s especially important for proof that you have support from your current employer as work-study balance will impact on program success.
Choose the best option for you. Register for the QS World MBA tour at topmba.com/metro. ISTOCK
Return on investment Both MBA and EMBA candidates can expect a salary increase upon graduation. EMBA graduates saw an average salary boost of 12 percent, according to a 2016 survey of U.S. programs by EMBAC. MBAs, by comparison — with much more to gain as they tend to be earlier on in their careers — saw an increase of 75 percent in compensation postgraduation, according to a 2015 QS ROI (return on investment) report looking at the U.S. and Canada. Of course, degree format also has significant financial implications here. EMBA students earn a full-time salary while studying and don’t incur the same costs associated with relocation for a full-time MBA program.

As the digital revolution continues, there’s opportunity for specialists to bring their skills to all sectors and organization types.
3Biomedical engineering
Combining engineering, biomedicine and clinical practice, this sector is conducting some of the world’s most cutting-edge research. With salaries in the range of $62,700 to $104,000, three-quarters of professionals in the field say their work is highly meaningful. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, biomedical engineering jobs are expected to grow a whopping 72 percent up to 2018.
4Translation/ interpretation
According to a 2016 study from Career Builder, translation and interpretation services are expected to grow 28 per-
cent in the U.S. by 2021, as businesses continue to expand overseas. A master’s degree — particularly if combined with international experience — could set you up for an exciting, flexible and lucrative career. Salaries for interpreters average just under $20 an hour.
5Environmental engineering
As environmental issues continue to grow in prominence, a master’s in environmental engineering is a great way to align yourself with social priorities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 15 percent increase in the field from 2012 to 2022 in the U.S. Typically earnings are between $53,900 and $92,800, and two thirds of environmental engineers find their work highly meaningful.

The digital world is crying out for developers to build the next wave of online platforms, technologies and tools. Earning between $37,800 and $84,900 depending on location, employer and experience, web developers report a high level of job satisfaction, rating their jobs on average five out of five. Roles in this field are expected to grow 27 percent in the decade up to 2024 in the U.S., as mobile and e-commerce continue to grow.
7Public-policy analysis
Also among the top 100 in PayScale’s list of master’s majors by salary potential, graduates with master’s degrees in public policy analysis go on to work in government, nonprofit organizations and private companies. They typically earn between $54,500 and $85,100. LAURA BRIDGESTOCK

Milla Jovovich makes her sixth bow as Alice, the hero of the “Resident Evil” series, with “The Final Chapter” (which, allegedly, really is). ILZE KITSHOFF

THE FUN STARTS HERE TANIA MORENO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Milla Jovovich has a favorite “Resident Evil” film. “Undoubtedly, it’s this one,” she says. It’s her sixth go as Alice, the security operative-turnedhero against both the zombie revolution and the bioengineering corporation that caused it. In the first entry, from 2001, Alice awoke with amnesia. Every film has found her battling the undead and company minions, all while searching for the truth of her past. That, apparently, arrives in “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,” which is what draws the actress (and musician, model and fashion designer) to it. “I love that Alice finally dis-
covers her own story and who she really is.” As the franchise’s (alleged!) swan song, the experience couldn’t help but be bittersweet. “I met my husband making that movie. Now I have two beautiful kids,” Jovovich says of the first, while referring to filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson. The two wed in 2009, and he’s now directed her in not only four of the “R.E.” films, but also 2011’s “The Three Musketeers,” in which she played the villainous Milady. Jovovich and Anderson’s first daughter, Ever Anderson, makes an appearance in “The Final Chapter,” playing the evil Red Queen. “I’m very proud of her,” Jovovich says.
Milla’s serious side Jovovich should be fine in her post-Alice career. As often as she’s been cast in action, she’s proved a formidable talent when given the chance to play it straight. She earned accolades for 2010’s “Stone,” as the wife of a jailed arsonist played by Edward Norton (the one where he has cornrows), and she did Shakespeare in 2014’s modernized film take on “Cymbeline.” She also has second-billing in “Shock and Awe,” Rob Reiner’s forthcoming drama about the Bush administration’s false allegations that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.
“There’s nothing more magical than sharing the set with your daughter.” The actress, now 41, finds it tricky balancing motherhood with her status as one of the screen’s great ass-kickers. When she was shooting this last film back in 2015, she had just given birth to her second daughter, Dashiel Edan.
“It was definitely a big challenge to go into superheroine mode, then go back to the role of mom,” she says. “It was a bit more difficult than it usually is for me to lose weight and get in shape to be Alice. But I worked harder to achieve it. I followed a very strict diet that worked. But I have to say, at first I thought,
‘Wow, this is never going to happen.’” Still, Jovovich will always find Alice to be an inspiration. “When I wake up in the mornings and do not feel my best, I can pull out my inner Alice to keep me going in the right direction,” she says. And she swears “The Final Chapter” really is the final chapter. “It completes the circle of the story,” she explains. “No matter how hard it is to say goodbye, I have to do it.” Asked what she’d
do if confronted with an actual zombie (you never k n o w t h e s e days!), she has a short reply: “Probably run.”
METRO.US WEEKEND, JANUARY 27-29, 2017
“Gold” In “Gold,” Matthew McConaughey’s gut hangs over his tighty whities. He’s hardly an Adonis when dressed, either: As floundering businessman Kenny Wells, our star sweats through beige-on-white suits. His stringy hair is hand-combed back over a balding top. It’s not a mere actor’s stunt, though. At the same time, it’s not all that special either. Kenny’s just another of McConaughey’s charismatic motormouths. He may be more desperate, more sweet-on-theinside, more of a loser. But he’s simply a slight variation — a lot of work to do something that’s only similar-but-different. McConaughey’s turn is emblematic of “Gold” as a whole. This is a noble misfire that tries to do something fresh with the familiar but can’t quite get there. It has the makings of a classic rise-and-fall horror show:
WKND
Based on a real tale of greedy superhubris, it drops in on Kenny, a never-was who drove his father’s Nevada mining business into the ground. He strikes gold — almost literally! — when he learns about a cache of the stuff lurking in the Indonesian jungle. He’s quick to lure Wall Street goons with tales of his potential haul — so quick, that he’s living like Scarface before they know 100 percent that there is, in fact, gold. Hilarity eventually ensues. It would have been easy to play this as a “Wolf of Wall Street” knockoff. Kudos to Team “Gold” for trying something different. “Gold” treats Kenny as both fool and hero, with a tone that shifts from satirical to serious, scathing to sad. “Gold” never quite gels. It fumbles around for focus. It all (sort of) comes together with the twist closer, but “Gold” is like a long con in which the grifter keeps losing the mark’s attention. MATT PRIGGE

“A Dog’s Purpose” An unholy marriage of “The Idiot’s Guide to Existentialism” and Animal Planet’s “Too Cute!” shows, “A Dog’s Purpose” stars the voice of Josh Gad as a reincarnating dog spirit who opens the film by asking, “What is the meaning of life?” The movie seems to supply an answer: It immediately cuts to newborn puppies. But a more thoughtful (but not that thoughtful) response takes another two hours to arrive. Till then, witness the strangest studio picture since “Collateral Beauty,” which ambitiously ponders the cosmos amidst a plethora of dog POV shots. To its credit, “A Dog’s Purpose” is tough for PG-rated pet porn. The first death comes within the first minute. Gad’s free-floating mutt keeps coming back, though, spending the longest stretch in the 1960s, where
212-300-5776 for a Free
he inhabits a golden retriever named Bailey who declares “ownership” of a young boy. He’ll age and die, or he’ll get shot by a slimy kidnapper and die, only to return each instance as a pup, ready to go again. Throughout, our canine hero asks the big questions, though the answers tend to make “Chicken Soup for the Soul” seem like a J.G. Ballard dystopia. The movie may unexpectedly turn into a Nicholas Sparks movie — it figures, since director Lasse Hallstrom made two Sparks films, as well as “My Life as a Dog” and “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” — but “A Dog’s Purpose” is more like “Forrest Gump” but with dogs. After two hours of embracing the inevitability of death, it peddles the Gumpian line that perhaps not thinking is the way to a happier life. But dammit if it still sporadically stabs right at the heart of anyone who grew up with a pet, despite itself. MP

Many are familiar with F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald’s tragic, yet passionate, love story. The glamorous parties and literary successes; the alcoholism and mental illness. But the lesser-told story comes from Zelda’s perspective. A new Amazon series, “Z: The Beginning of Everything, starring Christina Ricci as the vivacious Southern belle with a creative streak, shows us the infamous couple through Zelda’s eyes. Ricci, who also executive produces, says she was inspired to portray Zelda after reading “Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler, a fictionalized account of the Fitzgeralds that positions Zelda as the narrator. “I didn’t really know anything about [Zelda] except for the common misconceptions that other people have, says the 36-year-old actress. “It struck me the same way Patti Smith’s ‘Just Kids’ kind of struck me; it’s a way into a really inaccessible world, and to see that world from the inside out, it’s fascinating. Ricci talks with us about debunking the mythos of Zelda, the bunk notion of the “hysterical woman and how she couldn’t get enough of that “black velvet and diamonds. You mention the common misconceptions many of us have about Zelda. What can viewers learn about
her from watching the show? So many things. She was not an alcoholic; she just partied. [Scott] was the alcoholic. When you go back and read the biographies, she was always helping him through these periods of being sober. I didn’t realize how much of his writing was hers; I had no idea. I also thought that she was schizophrenic — [but there’s] no evidence of schizophrenia whatsoever. How much of her diagnosis was due to the sexism of the time; the notion of women being hysterical? Well, one thing I’ve always found fascinating is a lot of the women you read about in history all had nervous breakdowns, or had to be hospitalized. You’re like, really? You see, they were just really angry. And the husband was like, “You must be

insane to be this mad at me.â€? [Laughs] You’ve done a number of dark roles throughout your career. Is this one any dierent? I’ve always said, can you define “darkâ€? for me? To me, these are just people. But honest human behavior, flawed as it may be — I think it’s great that we’re in a time now that it’s not really considered that dark. We all know so much these days, we’re all so therapized. With all the information we have, I think we’re starting to judge people a little less. That’s what allows you to have the environment that’s right for this story. What new insight will we get into Scott and Zelda’s relationship? I think it’s a very honest approach to the relationship. They had a great passion, they loved each other’s ambition. Yes, it’s a great love affair, but there’s a lot of pragmatism involved in these love affairs. You can love someone and hate them at the same time. And someone can torture you and you still are obsessed with them. Who’s to say any of those things are not real love? We read that in one episode you wear 24 dierent outďŹ ts. Any favorite ’20s looks? I loved all the clothes, but I like the [outfits] after she becomes the “itâ€? girl, where she gets really dramatic. Those are my favorite dresses. More New Yorky. Trade suitor would have to pony up for ’Melo Carmelo is earning $24.6 million this season. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us
The Knicks as a franchise is at wit’s end trying to right the sinking ship, so it was natural they’d inquire about the trade value of one of only two worthy trade chips on their roster. Carmelo Anthony has the no-trade clause in his bloated contract, but it’s hard to imagine that he’d have vetoed a move to Cleveland for Kevin Love and pass up the chance of playing with good buddy LeBron James and chase that elusive ring. Alas, the Cavaliers reportedly turned down the alleged offer, meaning the Anthony-Phil Jackson drama shall continue. It’s not as if the Knicks (20-27) need any more distractions, as they try to dig themselves out of the hole
they created. Their preChristmas feel-good story is so 2016, as the slide down the standings is close to having their season reach perilous status. Wednesday night’s terrible loss to a terrible Dallas Mavericks (16-29) squad could be rock bottom — as it has capped a week in which they’ve lost three of the last four outings, seen Anthony’s frustrations rise, Jackson seemingly trying all he can to be subversive from within and the team’s only other player of value, Kristaps Porzingis, dealing with an Achilles malady to go along with his current performance slump. The Knicks are a mess — which is not a news flash — but it’s seemingly getting worse with every poor outing. The environment is becoming increasingly toxic, and that’s to be expected any time a franchise’s best and highest-paid player butts head with the upper management. Should the Knicks find
The Knicks reportedly reached out to the Celtics about a potential Carmelo Anthony trade. GETTY IMAGES
an actual suitor, though, it’s going to come at a great cost for the trade partner. Anthony is earning a whopping $24.6 million this season. And with two years left on his current deal, which is valued at $54 million and includes a 15 percent trade
kicker, it’s a daunting task to move him, to say the least. The damning trade kicker increases the cost for any team trying to acquire him, which means it would boost his current salary into the $29 million range. That’s a premium price for a fading star.
The proposed deal that would’ve involved Love made monetary sense because Cleveland’s power forward is earning $21.2 million this year and has three years remaining on his deal, valued at $72 million. Anthony, who is a small forward, would’ve
had to fill that gap at power forward for the Cavs, but judging by his physical style of play and prior experience of playing the position in spot duty, he would’ve fit in seamlessly. Regrettably — for the Knicks, at least — the deal fell through. The Cavs publicly denounced the offer in the first place, but with multiple outlets reporting the discussions, it’s difficult to believe that any talks never took place. As it stands now, head coach Jeff Hornacek is going to have to figure something out on the fly, because outside help is unlikely on the way. Anthony’s no-trade clause and the trade kicker are daunting obstacles. Perhaps the best way to squelch any more trade talks or public friction is to start winning some games — particularly winnable games like the one in Dallas. That was about as bad a loss all season for the Knicks, and that’s saying a lot.

Vegas with odd Super Bowl line nine days before game The Patriots went 14-2 in the 2016 regular season while the Falcons went 11-5. The Pats are much more experienced in big games, let alone the biggest game, and the New England defense is considered to be a much more stout unit than that of Atlanta’s. We’re still more than a week away from Super Bowl LI, so it’s still extremely early, but the Vegas line seems to be a little out-of-whack. The
Patriots are only favored by three points over Atlanta. “Some may have thought the Pats would be more than a threepoint favorite, but the line is still holding steady even though 65 percent of the money is coming in on them,” Kevin Bradley, the Bovada.lv sportsbook manager said this week. “The total, which is the highest in Super Bowl history at 58, is still
seeing 75 percent of bets on the over. It looks like the book will be rooting for the Falcons and the under.” As for odds to win Super Bowl MVP, Roger Goodell is likely not to thrilled to see Tom Brady with the best odds at 3/2. Matt Ryan is a close second with 5/2 odds. The next three players are Julio Jones (10/1), Julian Edelman (12/1) and LeGarrette Blount (20/1). MATT BURKE

Aries Give a little and take a little. Balance will make the difference to whatever you pursue. Maintaining a clear vision will ensure that you reach your destination.
Libra You should carefully pick with whom you want to spend time. Avoid anyone who is negative or critical. Lean toward people you know will be honest and supportive.
Taurus Your emotions will be difficult to control if you don’t like what’s happening around you. Don’t jump to conclusions. Strive to make personal gains independently.
Scorpio Making travel plans or digging for information that will help you follow a dream looks promising. Check out different cultures to find what you are looking for.
Gemini If you go with the flow, you will reach your destination. A chance to bring about positive personal change is within reach, as long as you limit your spending.
Sagittarius Use your intelligence and integrity to help you get what you want and need. If you try to avoid matters that need to be addressed, nothing will be gained.
Cancer Invest in something that will promote you and what you have to offer. An imaginative approach to something you want to pursue will be regarded as brilliant.
Capricorn Your experience will help you sidestep a pitfall that you’ve previously faced. Your intuitive intelligence won’t let you down. Romance should be a priority.
Leo Older and younger people in your life will offer insight into a dilemma you face. Taking the advice they offer will lead to good fortune and better relationships.
Aquarius You should question both your and other people’s motives. Do your own thing. Know what you want and don’t stop until you get it. Change will lead to happiness.
Virgo Put your money behind your ideas. The detailed and colorful way you present what you have to offer will make it difficult for anyone to turn you down.
Pisces If someone tries to make your life difficult, look for a way to distance yourself. Being able to bounce back will lead to your success. EUGENIA LAST
