TILLERSON CONFIRMED TRUMP PAYS RESPECTS ACTIVIST IRE RISES AS TO NAVY SEAL WHO DIED PIPELINE REVIEW BEGINS AS SECRETARY OF STATE

President Donald Trump on Wednesday paid his respects to a U.S. Navy SEAL who died in a raid on al Qaeda in Yemen that went wrong, the first military operation authorized by Trump as commander in chief. Trump traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware in an unexpected visit to meet with the family of William “Ryan” Owens, a chief special warfare operator who

died in Sunday’s dawn raid. The remains of the serviceman were sent to Dover, home to the largest U.S. military mortuary. Most of the visit was closed to the media. The U.S. military said 14 militants were killed in the raid in al Bayda province on a branch of al Qaeda known as AQAP. REUTERS

The U.S. Senate confirmed Rex Tillerson as President Donald Trump’s secretary of state on Wednesday, filling a key spot on the Republican’s national security team despite concerns about the former Exxon Mobil Corp. chief executive officer’s ties to Russia. In the vote, 56 senators backed Tillerson, and 43 voted no. The tally was largely along party lines, with every Republican

favoring Tillerson, along with four members of the Democratic caucus, Sens. Heidi Heitkamp, Joe Manchin and Mark Warner as well as Angus King, an independent. Democratic Sen. Chris Coons did not vote. REUTERS

Robert De Niro is on a roll right now. Over the last few months he’s been sticking it to Donald Trump: making angry videos where he calls him names, reading a list of made-up Donald tweets during protests. He’s funny, too, in “The Comedian,” his new dramedy about a floundering stand-up comic. We talked to De Niro, as well as his co-star Leslie Mann, and the legend opened up to us about political comedy and doing stand-up himself, even if it was just for a movie. metro.us/movies

Wheaton College creates scholarship for refugees targeted under Trump’s ban Refugee advocates are calling the Norton, Massachusetts, school’s decision among the best examples of leadership by any college. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota letters@metro.us

Wheaton College has just 1,650 students, but undergrads at the Massachusetts school hail from 76 countries. That’s why almost immediately after President Trump ordered a temporary ban on entering refugees from seven majority Muslim countries, school officials considered ways they could extend a helping hand. The private liberal arts college located in Norton this week announced the Wheaton Refugee Scholarship, a full-tuition award for a student escaping conflict in their home country. The scholarship gives preference to students from the seven countries mentioned in Trump’s immigration order: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The president’s order, issued a week ago, lasts 90 days. Wheaton’s scholarship is open to refugees who are already in the U.S. as well as those still trying to escape their countries. Annual tuition at Wheaton, plus room and board is about $61,000. School officials said the college will cover “all costs of attendance,â€? even the $60 application fee. “Students from all over the world who wouldn’t

be here without financial support, my hope is that they go back and become leaders in their own country,â€? said Wheaton President Dennis Hanno. “And the world is a much better place for the opportunity we provided them.â€? Hanno said the school has students currently enrolled who are from the countries listed in Trump’s ban. He wants the scholarship to send a strong message to students and the world — not so much a political statement, but one about “maintaining the diversity and unique atmosphereâ€? of his campus. From Syria alone, there are an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 college-age refugees, according to Shiyam Galyon, a campaign coordinator with Books Not Bombs. The group is a studentled campaign to create academic scholarships for Syrian citizens at American institutions by partnering with the nonprofit International Institute of Education Syrian Consortium. Galyon said she was excited to hear about Wheaton’s scholarship. “This is the strongest leadership we’ve seen from higher education,â€? she said. “We encourage more university presidents across the country to do something similar.â€? Education, she said, is “human right.â€? “You don’t need to be the genius in your class to deserve to go to school,â€? she said. “There are a lot of qualified students, but the cost of higher education, especially after years of conflict, is unattainable.â€?

Boston Marathon bombing survivor to marry fireman who saved her The couple raced in Wednesday’s Empire State Building Run-Up.

Roseann Sdoia went to cheer on runners at the Boston Marathon finish line four years ago and lost her leg after the pressure-cooker bombs stationed nearby exploded. She didn’t know then, but that wasn’t all fate had in store for her that day. As first responders rushed to assist the injured in the chaotic aftermath of the explosions, firefighter Mike Materia found his way to Sdoia, tying his belt around her badly injured leg as a makeshift tourniquet. He rode with her in

the ambulance, comforting her on the way to Massachusetts General Hospital, the New York

Post reported. Sdoia, a long-distance runner, said Materia has been an integral part of

helping her get back on her feet, both physically and emotionally ever since.

Continuing on the road to recovery, Materia was by Sdoia’s side Wednesday as the pair raced in the Empire State Building Run-Up, a fundraiser for the Challenged Athletes Foundation that helps “people with physical disabilities can pursue active life-

styles,” according to the race’s website. Sdoia and Materia are now engaged, but it was Sdoia’s mother who pushed the pair together as her daughter recovered in the hospital. “She was like, ‘Oh, did you see that firefighter? He’s so cute.’ And I was like, ‘Mom, I just got blown up,’ ” Sdoia told the Post. But Materia visited a few days later and the pair struck up a friendship. By June they went on their first date and last month, with the help of the couple’s dog, Sal, Materia proposed. Sal was wearing a special dog tag that read, “Mike wants to know. … If you’ll marry him.” She said yes. A small wedding is planned for the coming fall.

Hillary Clinton to deliver Wellesley College commencement address When Hillary Clinton delivered the first-ever student commencement speech at Wellesley College in 1969, she was Hillary Rodham, and she had no way of knowing that it would be the beginning of a long career in the spotlight. In May, she will return to address a new class of graduates. It will be her third speech at the all-women’s college in Massachusetts and will be one of her most visible appearances since losing the presidential election to Donald Trump in November. Clinton has been relatively reclusive since her defeat, but is beginning to make more public appearances and has several other speeches planned over the coming months. Win or lose, students said Clinton’s leadership role in national politics over the last three decades has served as an inspiration. “As Wellesley students, we arrive here believing

Hillary Clinton will deliver the 139th commencement address at Wellesley College on May 26. FLICKR

in a future that respects women’s potential and accomplishment, but as graduating seniors, and at this moment in history, we look to Secretary Clinton, our sister, as someone who will inspire us to make that future now,” said Casey Butler co-president of the Class of 2017. As first lady to her husband, President Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton went on to become U.S. senator then secretary of state. Her

two unsuccessful runs for president were still significant steps, which Wellesley said have long been part of Clinton’s trailblazing role for women. They also noted Clinton’s fight for women’s rights and gender inequity. Perhaps as a show of support and as a thank you, students selected Clinton to speak at the May 26 graduation. “She is the best person to represent who we have become at Wellesley and who we strive to be in the world. Her tireless push for progress embodies the spirit — and the courage — we seek in breaking down barriers and shattering glass ceilings of all kinds,” Amal Cheema, copresident of the Class of 2017 said. Clinton has pointed to Wellesley as the foundation to her career. She said Wellesley prepared her “to take on some of the rough-and-tumble” of a life in politics, and taught her “if you get knocked down, get back up.” ERIN TIERNAN

Beyonce is pregnant with twins!

Kim and Kanye to release children’s clothing line

Beyoncé just casually mentioned she’s having twins on Instagram. Like, super casually. She posted a picture with the following caption: “We would like to share our love and happiness. We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes. — The Carters” Um, also? The art direction of this announcement is pretty amazing. Beyoncé and husband Jay Z already have one daughter, the amazing and illustrious Blue Ivy, age 5. Congratulations, you guys! We’re freaking out.

Angelina Jolie demands $100,000 a month in child support Another day, another $100,000. Despite promising to keep the details of their divorce proceedings on the hush-hush, InTouch exclusively reports Angelina Jolie is making outrageous demands in her battle for sole custody against Brad Pitt. The actress and philanthropist is asking for $100,000 a month in child support, to pay for all of the expenses and set up trust funds for each of the six children. Her team is proposing an additional $250,000 be set aside each year to be put in the trust by her almost ex-husband. Just to put some things in perspective, Angelina Jolie is worth $160 million. Brad Pitt is worth $240 million. What I mean to say is, both of these people are LOADED. Surely, taking care of six kids is superexpensive, but also? This whole thing is just depressing.

GOSSIP

First, the only couple worth caring about breaks up, and then all of this ugly stuff comes out? I am now convinced the concept of love no longer exists.

You didn’t ask for it, but it’s coming: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are apparently collaborating on a children’s clothing line. Kim recently revealed, via Snapchat, that she and husband Kanye would be launching a line of kids’ clothes in the near future. According to People, daughter North modeled two pieces from the collection: a yellow sequin dress and a yellow shearling coat. Which makes sense, because what else is a 3-yearold going to wear on the playground? JK, North has never been on a playground. Both Kim and Kanye have dabbled in the fashion world before — Kim with a Kardashian Kids line with sisters Kourtney

and Khloé, and Kanye with his very luxurious homeless chic Yeezy Season 4 collection. The reality star only recently returned to social media, months after her brutal robbery in Paris. Thank you to the couple for giving us yet another thing we don’t really need and probably can’t afford! INSTAGRAM/@KIMKSNAPCHATS

Wino forever My, my, does Johnny Depp lead a lavish-ass lifestyle. According to Perez Hilton, details of said lifestyle have been leaked, thanks to a countersuit by Depp’s former business-management company. In January, Depp filed a lawsuit claiming that The Management Group collected $28 million in unauthorized contingent fees, never properly filed

his taxes on time and loaned around $10 million of his money to third parties. The very juicy complaint details the veteran actor’s chronic overspending, alleging that being Johnny Depp alone costs him about $2 million a month. Depp, who increasingly appears to have merged with his “Pirates of the Caribbean” character,

Jack Sparrow, allegedly spends $30,000 a month on wine. Which, #goals. It’s unclear whether he spends an inordinate amount of money on old fermented grapes to honor his infamous “Wino Forever” tattoo, or if the “Wino Forever” tattoo was to honor the fact that he is, in fact, the original wino. I’m hoping it’s a little bit of both.

Black History Month highlights the roles and stories of African-Americans in this country’s history. It’s a rumination on the cultures of two continents, Africa and North America, but the inclusive and respectful event is meant to be one of learning and celebration by all people. Here are a selection of events to do both throughout the month of February. Contemporary Marxists often refer to our current economic era as “late capitalism,” characterized by a global market. Artist Nathan Heuer explores the results of globalism through architectural images that stand in for an abandoned American proletariat. One image shows a farmhouse seemingly dripping with blood, with “GUNS” painted above the door; another is a mobile home sardonically titled “The Boardroom.” Feb. 3-March 10, Brookline Art Center, 86 Monmouth St., Brookline Free, brooklineartscenter. com

“Invisible Fractures: The Enduring Trauma of Emotional Abuse” Rachel Tine created this exhibition, a mix of photography and audio, to reveal the inner world of victims of emotional abuse—a psychologically devastating form of abuse which is often tragically down played, despite evidence that its outcomes are even worse than physical abuse. Both the images and recordings are informed by the experiences of actual emotional abuse victims Tine spoke to. Feb. 3-26 Piano Craft Gallery 793 Tremont St. Free, pianocraftgallery.com MOVIES

Europe’s nature-made bath houses offer a healing respite even in winter. Gellert Baths The Hungarian capital Budapest is renowned for its historic thermal baths, and the palatial Gellert Baths is the most famous. Opened in 1918, the complex is a collection of marble-clad, mosaicdecked soaking pools, with the centerpiece a spacious thermal pool flanked by carved stone pillars and stained glass and topped with a soaring glass dome. There’s plenty of room to stroll here, and the architecture is stunning.

Therme Erding’s spas are divided into two sections, family-friendly and “textile-free,” and each covers the continent’s attractions, from a Finnish sauna with its own Northern Lights show to an Ottoman-style relaxation lounge to hot tropical rain showers in a stone grotto. Martellus brings the fun to Foxboro It didn’t take long for Marcellus Bennett to make an impact with the Patriots.

Bennett’s best quotes

“I feel like I’m the Kanye of the NFL.”

JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us

On March 16, 2016, the same day the news broke that the Patriots had acquired tight end Martellus Bennett from the Chicago Bears, Bennett posted a picture to his colorful Instagram account (@martellusb). It was an older picture of him shaking Tom Brady’s hand with a caption that read, “Hi Tom, I’m Marty. Let’s do this.” Now Brady and Bennett are one win away from winning Super Bowl LI, Brady’s fifth and Bennett’s first. You could say it’s just how Bennett, who also calls himself the “Creative Director of Awesomeness at The Imagination Agency,” drew it up in his mind. And it’s certainly how Bill Belichick and the Patriots front office drew it up in the playbook. The tight end position is one that Belichick is very fond of, and he’s been tying to find the right second tight end to pair with Rob Gronkowski ever since Aaron Hernandez ... well, you know. Not only did the addition of Bennett add a complete tight end and second offensive weapon out of the tight end position, but it provided much needed depth at the position in case Gronkowski got hurt. Well, Gronkowski began the season injured and played just five games before he was once again out of commission for the rest of the season. In past years, that would have spelled doom for the Patriots. Not this year. Bennett has been able to help soften the blow of missing Gronkowski with his pass-catching (55 receptions, 701 yards, 7 touchdowns in the regular season) and blocking ability. But it’s not just what he’s been able to bring on the field, but also off the field. Never short on

words - or jokes - Bennett has been able to keep the mood light when the situation calls. “He brings a lot of energy,” Devin McCourty told reporters this week. “I think every year we always have guys like that. I think for a long time [Jerod] Mayo was kind of the energy guy. I’ve never seen Mayo have a bad day. Marty coming in, he’s been very similar to that. Always excited and a very unique personality. Guys really enjoy having him in the locker room. I think he’s enjoyed being here. It’s been a pretty good fit.” But it’s certainly not all fun and games for Bennett. While teammates will mention his personality in one breath, they’ll note how hard he works in the next. You could say that Bennett was unhappy with his situation in Chicago. It’s also easy to lose sight of the bigger picture when stuck on a losing team. But if being traded to the Patriots was a new lease on football life, Bennett has made the most of it.

“I just know that here — you have these goals all the time, individually. But here it was never really individual goals that I set,” Bennett told reports after stamping his ticket to Super Bowl LI. “From the moment I met my teammates, it was all about us and what can we do to get where we’re trying to go. Everyone here believes. There wasn’t a non-believer in this room at any time about going to the Super Bowl or what our goal was from the moment I got here in March or April. That rubs off on you. “Iron sharpens iron and attitude is contagious. A winning attitude is contagious. I definitely got affected since I’ve been here. I’ve got the winning disease right now and I’m enjoying this one. I don’t need the antidote.” Bennett has been relatively quiet through two playoff games, but tight ends were productive against the Falcons in the regular season. The Falcons allowed 84 receptions for 975 yards and eight touchdowns to tight

ends, according to ESPN. The eight touchdowns were tied for sixth most in the NFL, and yards ninth most. Whether he’s on the receiving end of Brady’s throws or helping to block on the line, Ben-

nett will be a big part of Sunday’s big game. And if all goes according to plan, he’ll be able to post another picture on his Instagram account after the game with this caption: “Hey Tom, I’m Marty. We did it.”

“Goodell looks like a Pringles guy. I don’t consider those chips.” - to WEEI
