TRUMP ONLY ‘TWEAKING’ GERMANY, FRANCE DEEPEN MILITARY TIES CANADA TRADE TIES

SENATE EXPECTED TO CONFIRM MNUCHIN

President Donald Trump said on Monday the United States will be “tweaking” its trade relationship with Canada, unlike its trade ties with Mexico where it faces a more severe situation. “We have a very outstanding trade relationship with Canada. We’ll be tweaking it,” Trump said at a joint news conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the White House.

“It’s a much less severe situation than what’s taking place on the southern border. On the southern border, for many, many years the transaction was not fair to the United States.” REUTERS

Germany will move forward this week with plans to set up a joint fleet of Lockheed Martin Corp C-130J transport planes with France and join a Netherlandsled fleet of Airbus A330 tanker planes, defense ministry sources said. Those and several other initiatives with Norway, Romania and the Czech Republic are part of a broader drive to expand European defense

cooperation to be announced at a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, the sources said. The agreements come as Germany and other NATO members face increasing pressure from the United States to spend more for their own military and reach NATO’s target of devoting 2 percent of gross domestic product to defense spending. The U.S. Senate is expected to confirm former banker and Hollywood financier Steven Mnuchin as Treasury secretary on Monday, installing the Trump administration’s top official on tax reform, financial regulation and economic diplomacy. Confirmation would put a Goldman Sachs veteran in charge of the Treasury for the first time since the financial crisis pushed Wall Street out of favor in top

Washington policy circles eight years ago. Democrats, who boycotted Mnuchin’s approval by the Senate Finance Committee, are expected to vote against him. But no Republicans have declared opposition, setting the stage for a party-line 52-48 vote. REUTERS

APPLE SHARES HITS RECORD HIGH

4

Apple shares cruised to a record-high close Monday, helping catapult the S&P 500 stock index over the $20 trillion mark in what amounts to a victory for plainvanilla mutual funds over a bevy of hedge fund managers who recently backed away from the iPhone maker. The largest component of the S&P 500 and a core holding on Wall Street, Apple’s stock climbed 0.9 per-

cent to end at $133.29, above its record-high close of $133.00 hit on Feb. 23, 2015 and giving it a market value of about $699 billion. Its increase helped balloon the S&P 500’s .SPX market capitalization on Monday beyond $20 trillion for the first time. While mutual funds have largely bet on Apple in recent months, some big names missed out on all or part of its recent acceleration. REUTERS

As protesters take to the streets, states are proposing laws to make sure that they get out of them. A Tennessee bill would protect drivers who hit protesters with their cars. The protester would not be able to sue the driver in civil court for any injuries (as long as they weren’t hit willfully). Other states want to target protesters who impede traffic, even billing them for the cost of law enforcement or threatening prison time. Do you agree with these laws? Hearts for Refugees spreads message of support, kindness Children from coast to coast crafted Valentine’s Day cards for refugees as part of a project launched by a Manhattan family. LAURA BARCELLA @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

“Mom, what’s a refugee?” Ashley Lavin wasn’t sure how to respond when her 5-year-old daughter, Lucy, asked her that question two weeks ago. Lavin, 37, a stay-at-home mom of two on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, answered simply but truthfully, telling the little girl, “They’re people whose homes are no longer safe, so some of them come to the U.S.” When Lucy replied, with 3-year-old brother Billy eagerly listening in, “Can kids be refugees? Can I be their friend?”

Lavin was again taken aback. “It was this moment of pure empathy and kindness. As a parent you always want to encourage that,” she said. So she decided to launch a kid-friendly Valentine’s Day project called Hearts for Refugees to help New York kids and families push their collective urge toward kindness one step further. Lavin, her kids and her husband Brian, 37, began creating colorful paper valentine hearts to pass out to local refugees. The cards bear inclusive messages of encouragement, such as “I am your friend” and “I am happy you are here.” Lavin spread the word about the project to family and friends online, enlisting the support of people from Connecticut to California, as well as a number of women in

her neighborhood moms’ group. “The response has been incredible,” she said. Hundreds of people have since deposited their own handmade heart cards in drop boxes Lavin set up around Manhattan. The New York-New Jersey arm of the International Rescue Committee agreed to distribute the cards, and to spread the

armed spirit, hosting drop boxes and making cards for the project. Operation Exodus Inner City, a tutoring and mentoring program for Latinx youth in Washington Heights, was one such group. Ann Pennington, a NYC stylist, helped organize the Operation Exodus event, where approximately 50 children from the tutoring program designed their own hearts for refugees. “The kids were so excited. They knew what this was all about,” Pennington said. Avigail Ziv, executive director of International Rescue Committee New York-New Jersey, said her department resettles approximately 400 refugees in New York and New Jersey each year, and provides guidance and assistance for up to 4,000 oth-

ers. Ziv believes the Hearts for Refugees project helps “put a more human face on the refugee crisis. There are [refugee] kids here just starting school, making their lives, and this is a great way to touch them.” For her part, Lavin said she wasn’t particularly attuned to refugee issues until she “had to be” following the enactment of President Donald Trump’s notorious Muslim ban. His highly restrictive executive order, since suspended by

a federal appeals court, mobilized countless New Yorkers in protest. Though she started Hearts for Refugees as a small project to encourage kids’ compassion, after receiving such a promising swell of support, Lavin now sees it in an even broader light. “We’ve been able to teach [children] that the world around them is full of overwhelmingly good people,” she said. “And that if we all work together, we can do amazing things.”

Winter blizzard blows Boston Yeti back into town

BRIEF

FLICKR

Snowblower uncovers dead body in Lynn A man using a snowblower to clear a path early Monday morning in Lynn uncovered a homicide, police said. The discovery was made around 5 a.m. according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office. The victim, identified as

Carlos Aponte, 38, had visible injuries to his upper chest and lower neck, officials said. Authorities are awaiting the medical examiner’s report to determine the actual cause of death, said prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Carrie Kimball Monahan. The investigation is ongoing.

at Polartec (creators of fleece!) to help spread the word about a fabulous event they have coming up on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Waterville, New Hampshire, called FattyFest. It’s all about riding fat bikes. I had never heard of fat bikes before, but after riding one I knew right away they were definitely made for Yetis.

ERIN TIERNAN

After a mild winter gave way to some serious snowfall over the last few days, Boston’s beloved Yeti was back on the prowl. Lured by the snowfall, he could be seen over the weekend shoveling out driveways and snacking on his favorite treats (orange cardamom and poppy seed doughnuts). The Boston Yeti, somewhat elusive, yet social media savvy — and an apparent brand spokesman — first revealed himself to the city in the winter of 2015. It was then he provided some help with shoveling and muchneeded comic relief amid the hammering blizzards that buried the city under 100 inches of snow. Unless you happen to run into the yeti during a winter storm, he can prove hard to find. He’s been toying with the idea of setting up a yeti signal so that city

folks can easily call on him, but for now you can follow along with the yeti’s adventures on Twitter @BostonYeti2015 and on Instagram @thebostonyeti_official. “If anyone out there has experience building signals of this magnitude please get in touch,” the yeti asked during an email interview with Metro on Monday. Yes, the yeti does speak, and he has a lot to say: Where was the yeti born? Are you a Boston native or did you migrate here from other lands?

I’m a true Boston native! In 2015, I saw all of the snow falling and thought it would be a good time to slowly introduce myself to the state, country and world. So far I’ve been well received, but I’m still shy. We haven’t seen much of the yeti this winter, what do you do during hibernation? I’ve been keeping busy this winter. My friends at Union Square Donuts in Somerville taught me how to make cappuccino and in January I caught up with some great folks

As Bostonians, we’re more inclined to trust a yeti than a groundhog – does the yeti have any special forecasts for what’s left of winter? I predict more snowstorms! But fear not, Bostonians, as I’m always available to lend a helping claw and shovel you out. Does the yeti take the T to get around? If yes, how easy has it been to get around this time versus during the 2015 storms? You know, I’ve only taken the T once and it wasn’t a fun experience. Not because of anything the MBTA did but because I missed my stop. I got on the red line train in Davis Square with the intention of going to Park Street in order to visit a friend who often frequents the Boston Commons (do you know Keytar Bear?) But I fell asleep and ended up in Braintree.

The cities of Lawrence and Chelsea are suing President Donald Trump over an executive order that would stop cities from receiving federal funds if they do not comply with federal immigration law. The suit is at least the second Massachusettsbased legal challenge to an executive order issued by the new president and comes as state lawmakers are determining their own response to the Trump administration and its immigration policies. The complaint, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Mas-

sachusetts, describes the order as “a major affront to the basic principles of federalism and the sepa-

ration of powers.” “The Executive Order seeks, without congressional authorization, to commandeer local officials to enforce the federal government’s immigration policies, and threatens municipalities with crippling losses of funding, apparently including funding for programs with no connection to law enforcement, if the municipalities do not come to heel,” the complaint reads. “Particularly for smaller and more impoverished cities and towns, the impact of this Executive Order is both immediate and chilling.” STATE HOUSE NEWS SERVICE

Val Chmerkovskiy on his breakup with Amber Rose

Derek and Hannah Jeter are having a baby Add another couple to the list! Celebrity couple #329 — I’m assuming, because everyone is pregnant at this point — Derek and Hannah Jeter are expecting their first child. The 26-yearold model, formerly of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit fame, announced her pregnancy on The Player’s Tribune. The for-athletes, byathletes media site, which is owned by Derek Jeter himself, has

a new column where athletes’ friends and family members gush about how darn great they are. Hannah Jeter thought that was the perfect opportunity to announce: a) her pregnancy and b) that she thought he was a pitcher. The pair married in July 2016 after dating for three years. According to E! News, they are extremely excited and in love, and are super looking for-

ward to having a family. Congratulations to the couple who just can’t stop telling us how damn happy they are!

Kylie Minogue breaks up with ex because of fam Oh, man. It’s looking like there’s more to the story of Kylie Minogue’s broken engagement, and it is not pretty. According to the Daily Mail, the 49-year-old singer kicked out ex-fiance Joshua Sasse after her family gave her an ultimatum: Choose between them or her beau. It appears that the Minogues do not play games. An insider — it’s always those damn mysterious inside sources, isn’t it? — says sister Dannii Minogue found out some stinging truths about Sasse and

organized some sort of dramatic intervention. Minogue’s parents were reportedly concerned that the 29-year-old “Galavant” actor was

Trolls gonna troll. And apparently they’ve been hounding Val Chmerkovskiy about his recent split from Amber Rose. On Instagram, the “Dancing With the Stars” pro wrote a lengthy message taking on the, erm, haters who have been spamming his posts. “I am addressing this topic solely in hopes that after reading y’all will stop spamming my posts,” the 30-year-old wrote. “We decided to end our relationship a week ago … She’s an

Solange is truly my fave. The “Cranes in the Sky” singer, who grabbed an award at the Grammys this weekend for Best R&B Performance, took to Twitter with a cryptic message after sister Beyonce was snubbed for Album of the Year. “Wuddup frank,” she wrote, linking to a Tumblr post that rapper Frank Ocean wrote last week. According to People, Ocean had extensively criticized Grammy organizers Ken Ehrlic and David Wild, and accused the

amazing woman that I feel very lucky to have gotten to know and love.” He goes on and on … and on. Seriously, the post did not need to be this long. The unkind messages were likely inspired by Rose’s recent and exceedingly public reunion with ex-hus-

band Wiz Khalifa. They were spotted kissing and doing some above-thewaist stuff on the red carpet this weekend. Chmerkovskiy had been dating Rose, 33, for about five months. And now, let us mourn yet another long and fruitful celebrity relationship.

Solange hints at Grammys boycott show of suffering from “cultural bias and general nerve damage” — which, true. Many performers skipped the awards this year, including Ocean, citing how archaic they’ve become. The younger Knowles, 30, is no stranger to controversy. May I remind you of the elevator debacle? Basically, Solange suffers no fools. Be careful, old white dudes who run the Grammys.

It’s not uncommon to go on a date that feels forced and wonder, “How could I have misread the connection?” It can happen whether you’re five dates in on Valentine’s Day or it’s a first date on any day of the week. To flirt with each other in real life and connect completely, you need to create conversation flow (and great

nonverbal communication too, of course!). If you’re feeling disconnected, ask yourself: Has our groove synced yet? Experiencing an epic date that leads to another could be as simple shifting communication. Here’s exactly how to create conversation flow so you connect every time: Don’t fear the lull. It’s common to want to fill every silence. But you risk babbling or making the conversation more awkward than it was originally. And you could inadvertently come off as self-involved. Remember: You are there to receive communication as much as you are to actively communicate. Spend as much time listening as you do talking and your date will feel like you were as interested as you were interesting. Let each topic linger. When conversation isn’t flowing right, then the tendency is to bounce from one topic to the next. You’ll find your flow when instead,

you focus on “me too” moments. When you hit a topic you can relate to, add on to what your date is saying. It will further qualify you as a great match for them and help you create conversation comfort. Go beyond small talk. Small talk creates common ground. However, any more than five minutes of the weather or how your day was and you risk losing your connection. A recent EliteSingles survey found that 25 percent of Americans find “chitchat” boring when on a first date. Get deeper than surface level by asking about your date’s family, recent trips and other topics they may be passionate about. The best questions to ask are follow ups, like asking about something you know from your online messages. For example: “How did (insert topic) go this week?” It reminds your date you know each other already, creates instant comfort and removes the tension so sparks can fly.

Radhika Nair Nair made global headlines last season when she became the first Indian woman to walk the Balenciaga runway. Hard to believe, we know. Rhadika’s runway success was so meteoric she didn’t have a major agency representing her prior to her Balenciaga casting. Since then, the Bangalore native has proved Vetements spring herself to be a 2017 couture new favorite of fashion’s ultimate tastemaker, Balenciaga and Vetements Creative Director Demna Gvasalia, appearing in Vetements’ most recent show. She also just made an NYFW appearance in the Sies Marjan show.

The girl from Houston had chopped her previously long straight hair off, dyed it blond, and got herself a runway exclusive in Anthony Vacarello’s big debut as creative director of Paris’ iconic house. 10 EDUCATION GUIDE

The future of higher education A new wave of digitally delivered courses is transforming the way we learn. SARA FEINSTEIN @SaraBFeinstein

sara.feinstein@metro.us

The digital realm has come to encompass everything we know, and now it’s beginning to redefine our system of higher education. Thanks to the work of Massive Open Online Courses, anyone with internet connection can enroll in free online classes on subjects ranging from American government and Civil War Reconstruction to artificial intelligence and robotics.

And that doesn’t mean sitting through a lesson from an uncredentialed stranger lecturing out of his mother’s basement. At EdX, a nonprofit MOOC provider run by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, users can choose from more than 1,300 courses taught by distinguished university professors at top-tier colleges. There are no admissions processes or enrollment fees; there’s no need to even leave your bed. It’s a revolutionary approach to the traditional college experience, explains EdX CEO, Anant Agarwal. Rather than sitting in a classroom, students follow the virtual lesson plan by watching

ISTOCK

short videos given by the professor, and then taking quizzes on the material. And they’re not only lecture-style videos. “Say you’re taking a course on supply-chain management,” he says. “The professor might take you on location and do interviews with teachers in the field or have you actually watch some demonstrations. “In some cases, it’s almost like watching reality TV.” Payment is factored in only if students want to pursue a verified certifi-

cate of completion after passing the course. It’s an entirely different model founded on the idea: You pay if you pass. “In our current system, you pay up front, and if you fail, tough luck,” he says. “Here you can learn for free; if you want a credential, you pay $50, and then if you want the credit to transfer onto your transcript, you pay around $600, which is about half the price of state tuition.” As the trend toward online education continues

to gain momentum, the standard four-year degree might soon be a thing of the past. Agarwal proposes a foreseeable alternative: Students would spend their first year taking classes online, the following two years attending a physical college for the experience, and their final year finishing their degree while also stacking up online credentials. Of course, these online courses are beneficial not only to those attending college. For high

school students, he says, the courses may offer a chance for them dip their toes in the water and test out different subjects before deciding on a major. And for people in between — those with a career or in the process of looking for a job — there’s always the option of a “micromaster’’ degree. “In my vision of the future, people will be what I call continuous learners, going through life and collecting microcredentials along the way,” Agarwal says.

If you are seeking a challenging and rewarding education that will help you embark on a career that will make a difference, Tufts University School of Medicine provides an ideal environment to earn a public health or professional degree. Susan Jane White has always had a sweet tooth, but that doesn’t mean she’s a sugar fiend. The Dublin, Ireland-based bestselling author of “The Extra Virgin Kitchen used to devour everything and anything in her sight.

But more than a decade ago, while White was a graduate student at Oxford University, a spat of immune-related flare-ups, from cramping to cold sores, severe exhaustion to psoriasis, caused her to change her eating habits.

The chronic illnesses that had her in and out of the hospital for testing and constantly on antibiotics led her to try an elimination diet. This not only eradicated her symptoms, but gave White a newfound calling as a nutri-

tional chef — or a “nut, as she jokingly calls it. White’s latest cookbook, “The Virtuous Tart: Sinful but Saintly Recipes for Sweets, Treats and Snacks,

METRO.US TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2017

provides gluten-, refined sugar- and dairy-free dessert recipes to satisfy your cravings, while keeping your insides happy. We spoke with the saucy 37-year-old author ahead of her February book tour in New York about how she “takes the hell out of healthy” and why we should all count nutrients, not calories. Here’s the big question: How do you make sweets taste good without using refined sugar, gluten or dairy? I’m a junk food veteran, so I know what I’m looking for! Treats have got to taste amazing, or else what’s the point? We use natural sugars such as honey, sticky dates, coconut nectar and maple syrup. I can’t accuse any sugar of being healthy, but these are all better choices to seduce my sweet tooth. I feel fuller and satiated much quicker. How did changing your diet cure your immune disorder? Michael Pollan has a brilliant saying — “I’d rather pay the grocer than the

HEALTH doctor.” My illness taught me to do exactly that. Fourteen years ago my diet used to be very restrictive: cereal and milk for breakfast, biscuits, cakes, scones for snacks, filled roll for lunch, pasta for supper, followed by hot milky drinks and more junk food snacks. Cutting down on dairy, wheat and processed sugar offered me new taste buds, and a new lease of life. Suddenly I was exposed to hundreds of outrageously tasty ingredients that I never even knew existed. Chestnut pancakes, soba noodles, buckwheat waffles, chickpea falafel, [zucchini] noodles, Mexi-

can chili bean. Today my diet is mind-blowingly tasty, and I can’t believe I’m so healthy, too. In your book’s introduction, you write “it makes a lot of sense

ROOST BOOKS

to count nutrients, not calories.” Can you explain your thinking there? Sure! You could reduce your calorie intake sig-

nificantly just by eating jelly all day. But that’s not healthy — you’d be doing your brain and your battery a huge disservice. So, for me, the idea of calorie counting is utterly bankrupt. It doesn’t look after your body or your health in my opinion. Focusing on nutrients will get you to your “happy place” much quicker! I’m not interested in size; I’m interested in happiness. I’m interested in performance. Treat your body like an athlete would — we’ve all got races to run and hurdles to jump. I don’t want to sabotage my own fuel supply. I’ve learned that food should give you energy, not take it away. What in the heck are Honuts? Do enlighten us. The healthy donut — Honut! I call them Honuts because every time I make them, I want to straddle the tray. Damn delicious things. Mine are inspired by the legendary Erin McKenna’s

Honuts — the healthy donut reprinted courtesy of Roost Books This recipe is based on the classic donut from Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC, a gluten-free bakery that FedExes donuts across the country to breathless celebs. I know it seems like an intemperate amount of ingredients to purchase, but you’ll be guaranteed year-round honuts and happiness. Admittedly, these honuts flirt with their own mortality after six hours. Best to eat them straight away, like at a picnic, movie night or children’s party.

coconut oil 6 tablespoons apple puree 1 teaspoon vanilla powder or extract Makes 10-12 donuts

3/4 cup coconut sugar, rapadura or jaggery 3/4 cup brown rice flour and/or sorghum flour 1/2 cup potato flour 1/3 cup chickpea flour 4 tablespoons arrowroot 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum Pinch of sea salt flakes Just under 3/4 cup hot water Just over 1/3 cup melted

We are going to bake these donuts instead of deep-frying the bejesus out of them, so start by preheating your oven to 350°F. Using some of your melted coconut oil, brush two six-mold donut trays and set aside. I have only one donut tray, so I end up doing two batches, which works just fine. Spin all the dry ingredients together in a blender or food processor. Now add the wet ingredients: your hot water, melted coconut oil, apple puree and vanilla. Blitz until sumptuous and smooth. Drop spoonfuls of batter into each donut mold. Use your spoon to drag the batter around the ring. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes. Let the donuts cool in the mold for 5 minutes before releasing them with a silicone knife. Eat them hot, for a head-totoe sensation. I dip them these into an icing made with cacao butter, maple syrup and beetroot powder.

CELTICS SHOULD PUSH HARD FOR PACERS’ GEORGE IN TRADE OPINION

MATT BURKE

Closing time

@burke_metro

As much fun as Celtics fans have had these past few years in checking in on Brooklyn Nets scores every other night, it could prove to be just as joyous to see losses for the Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls in the next 10 days. Both the Pacers and Bulls are stuck in neutral, hovering around the .500 mark and flip-flopping between the No. 6 and No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference. Both, as of this writing, have lost three games in a row. Sitting in the middle in the NBA is the definition of no-man’s land, as you either want to be really good (obviously), or really bad (to put yourself in position to draft that next transcendent star). It’s not exactly breaking news to point out that neither the Pacers or Bulls are going to win the title this year, so — at this point — what’s wrong with going the other way?

The Celtics have just two games remaining before the All-Star break as they’ll host the 76ers at the Garden on Wednesday (7:30 p.m., CSNNE) and then travel to Chicago to take on the Bulls on Thursday (8 p.m., CSNNE). The C’s won’t play after that until Friday, Feb. 24, in Toronto, which is a day after the NBA trade deadline.

Paul George is averaging 22.5 points per game this season with the Pacers. GETTY IMAGES

The trade deadline is Feb. 23, and the Pacers have a brutal schedule prior to that date. They played the Spurs last night, and will play at Cleveland on Wednesday. They then host the Wizards on the second night of a back-to-back on Thursday. It’s entirely conceivable that the Pacers could lose three more games — sending them into the All-Star

break with a hideous six-game losing streak. If that happens, expect trade talks to quickly heat up regarding the Pacers’ top player in Paul George, and — as always — expect the Celtics to be at the forefront of those talks with Larry Bird. It is clear by now that George is one of the few players who has been mentioned

in trade rumors that Danny Ainge would relinquish the 2017 Nets pick for. “Boston’s shown minimal interest in [Carmelo] Anthony, preferring to continue its pursuit of persuading Chicago [Jimmy Butler] and Indiana [Paul George] to engage in trade talks that involved the two younger, more well-rounded

stars,” The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski wrote last week. This coming summer, George will have played seven years in the league and will be eligible to receive the “7-9 max” contract he covets. Bird has often discussed his intention of locking George up, but his star player may be growing frustrated. The typically laid-back Indiana crowd has started to jeer its own team of late, and George has gone on the defensive. “Obviously, I get it,” George told the Indianapolis Star of the boos. “The team’s not performing, and we’re not playing well. [But]

it’s not like we’re out there not giving our all. We want to win just as much as the fans want us to win. It doesn’t help — booing us. We want to come out and play hard. We want to play hard for them. It’s not like we’re just out there to be there. I get it, though. They expect us to be at a high level. I get it. I don’t think booing is the solution.” George is again an All-Star this season as he’s averaging 22.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. He also plays a position, small forward, in which the Celtics could use an upgrade at. As for what Boston would have to give up in this trade, Bird would certainly demand a lot. Think Marcus Smart and/or Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, and the Brooklyn pick. If a George-to-Boston swap were to go down, expect all the league conspiracy theorists to throw fits. In the eyes of many, Ainge’s former teammate Kevin McHale gift-wrapped Kevin Garnett 10 years ago, and now Bird would be giving his old franchise a potential path to another title.
