KIM JONG UN’S HALFUS ETHICS: WHITE HOUSE US SECRET SERVICE SHOULD PROBE CONWAY DIRECTOR STEPPING DOWN BROTHER MURDERED

The White House should investigate whether presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway violated government ethics rules when she made a public endorsement of Ivanka Trump products, and consider disciplinary action, the Office of Government Ethics said in a letter. Conway’s comments last week after retailer Nordstrom announced it was dropping the branded line of Trump’s
daughter Ivanka prompted criticism from Republican and Democratic lawmakers amid concern she may have violated ethics rules. “There is strong reason to believe that Ms. Conway has violated the Standards of Conduct and that disciplinary action is warranted,” the letter read. REUTERS

Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy plans to step down next month, the agency said, two years after he took charge of the agency following high-profile security lapses by the service responsible for protecting the president. “Congratulations Dir Clancy on your retirement! The men & women of the @SecretService are grateful for your 29 years of service & leadership,” the Secret Service
said on Twitter. Clancy will leave on March 4, his departure means that President Donald Trump will be able to select his own security chief. The Secret Service has almost 7,000 employees and is charged with protecting the president and his family as well as combating counterfeiting. Californians who were ordered to evacuate due to a threat from the tallest dam in the United States can now safely return to their homes and businesses may resume operations, a county sheriff said on Tuesday. A previous evacuation order has been reduced to an evacuation warning, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told a news conference, after water management officials drained
enough water from the Oroville Dam. The warning means that people can return but should be prepared to evacuate again if necessary, Honea said. Both the primary and backup drainage channels of the dam, known as spillways, were damaged after a buildup of water that resulted from an extraordinarily wet winter in Northern California that followed years of severe drought. Do Massachusetts charter schools support new education secretary? DeVos has been a strong supporter of charter schools, but Marc Kenen, executive director of Massachusetts Charter Public School Association, explains why he’s still concerned. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota
kristin.toussaint@metro.us
Betsy DeVos, the controversial new secretary of education, has received some of her strongest support from charter school advocates and educators. DeVos has been a champion of charter and voucher schools, and was praised in states like North Carolina, where more than 80,000 students are in charters. But not in Massachusetts. Massachusetts has 78 charter schools, which advocates say are succeeding in their educational mission. So it was somewhat surprising that Massachusetts Charter Public School Association executive director Marc Kenen expressed wariness about DeVos in her new role. In an interview with Metro, Kenen explains.
A month ago, you wrote a letter to [Sen.] Elizabeth Warren about your concerns about DeVos as Education Secretary. Can you expand on what prompted that, considering her general support among charter school advocates? The charter school movement is very different state to state across the country. Here in Massachusetts, we believe very strongly that the only reason to have charter schools is if you have very high-quality charter schools. Having school choice that’s not quality is not a choice at all. We expressed concerns in the letter that the track record of the now secretary of education indicated the lack of intensity of focus on quality and accountability. What kind of impact does the secretary of education have on local charter schools? [Devos] has some power over what happens on a local level. Mostly it’s really about what the federal budget looks like, and she has a small role in that, so we are particularly concerned about any kind of budgetary proposals coming from [President] Trump that the secretary
more importantly, we’re concerned that under the guise of supporting charter schools, the president and secretary will impose and enact proposals that hurt kids.

would be either behind or supporting. Have you been in touch with charter schools in other states about your concerns? There’s lots of conversation and discussion, but
not necessarily agreement because our state systems are very, very different. Many of the policies that we might support may not be shared by our colleagues in other states. Are you worried that
DeVos’ support of charters could hurt the popularity of charter schools in Massachusetts? We’re concerned that the support of the president could have a negative impact on our public support in Massachusetts, but
Can you give an example? In the presidential campaign, Trump proposed the idea of transferring $20 billion in federal money from the Title 1 program, which is an entitlement program that goes to schools across the country that serve the poorest children. This money has been an integral part of providing equity for children in public schools across the country. He wants to take $20 billion out of that money and give it to states in a block grant, meaning a lump sum, to support their private school voucher programs, which is a pet project of the Secretary of Education. By saying they support charter schools and school choice, and proposing something that would be devastating for public school kids in charter schools and district schools — because we all get Title 1 money — this would be very detrimental not only to charter schools but to kids across the country.

Bill would make Massachusetts first state to commit entirely to renewable energy The proposed legislation aims at having the commonwealth use clean energy for all of its electricity needs by 2035. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota
kristin.toussaint@metro.us
Massachusetts is already a leader in clean energy initiatives, but environmental advocates and three state legislators believe far more can be done. A recently introduced bill would make Massachusetts the first state in the nation to commit entirely to renewable energy sources for electricity, heating and transportation. Called the 100 Percent Renewable Energy Act, the measure has
already garnered the support of 53 House and Senate members — more than a quarter of the legislators on Beacon Hill, said Ben Hellerstein, state director with Environment Massachusetts. Activists are working to garner more support for this bill, which is just one of thousands to be considered by the legislature during the current two-year session. The bill was introduced by state Reps. Sean Garballey and Marjorie Decker, and state Sen. Jamie Eldridge. “If passed, this would be the most ambitious clean energy initiative by any state so far,” Hellerstein said. “It’s up to Massachusetts to lead the way forward … for a cleaner, safer future.” The bill sets different deadlines, requiring all electricity in the

and others by 2050. Steve Linsky from Climate Action Western Massachusetts, a climate advocacy organization, said the state has already seen the effects of climate change, from severe drought in the summer to massive snowfall in the winter. While 100 percent renewable energy may seem like a lofty goal, it is “not merely possible, but long overdue,” Linsky said. “With each and every day our elected officials fail to act, we fall further behind.”
The Massachusetts bill would create a Clean Energy Workforce Development Fund in order to increase job opportunities in solar, offshore wind and other clean technologies. It would also require the state Department of Energy to set “binding targets” for renewable energy growth in major sectors of the economy and create regulations to ensure that the state stays on track. Shifting to 100 percent renewable energy would require homes al-
ready equipped with oil and natural gas heating to upgrade, a costly upgrade. Hellerstein said he could not provide a long-term cost estimate because the technologies for renewable energy are constantly changing and becoming less expensive. He contends the savings in the long run would exceed the total bill, and cited a study that looked at the cost of a global transition to 100 percent renewable energy. That study estimated a global change would cost $70 trillion over the next several decades, with a cost savings in excess of $115 trillion. San Diego recently pledged to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity by 2035, and Google announced it will source all of its electricity from renewable sources this year. But if approved, Massachusetts would be the first state to undertake that effort. “Massachusetts has a long history of leading the way, and it’s not just as innovators but also as advocates,” said Jeff BarzSnell, chair of Salem’s Renewable Energy Task Force. “This is as much a moral issue as it is an infrastructure and resource issue.”

Jury selection starts in Aaron Hernandez double-murder trial Jury selection started Tuesday in the doublemurder trial of ex-NFL star Aaron Hernandez. The former Patriots tight end is charged with two counts of firstdegree murder in the July 16, 2012, killings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado outside a nightclub in Boston’s South End. Prosecutors say Hernandez gunned down the
men after one bumped into him in the club, spilling a drink on him. More than 200 jurors will be whittled down to 16 over the next two weeks. Jurors will be sworn in on March 1, when the trial is scheduled to begin. Hernandez is already serving a life sentence for the 2013 shooting death of Odin Lloyd. ERIN TIERNAN
Zoo Atlanta is making the best out of losing their Super Bowl bet. The zoo made a bet with New England counterpart Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, that the losing side in the big game would name one of their baby animals after the winning team’s star quarterback. Well, we all know how that turned out. So on Monday, Zoo Atlanta introduced Tom Brady, the newest member of their family. Scarlett Johansson doesn’t believe in monogamy In an interview with Playboy, problematic fave Scarlett Johansson says a whole lot about monogamy, matrimony and responsibility. “I think the idea of marriage is very romantic,” says the 32-year-old actress. “I don’t think it’s natural to be a monog-
amous person. And the fact that it is such work for so many people — for everyone — the fact of that proves it is not a natural thing.” Johansson has been married twice: first to Ryan Reynolds

However, it looks like ScarJo gave this interview while she was still married (she refers to her husband throughout). It seems rude to be married, talk endlessly about your lack of faith in monogamy and matrimony, and then go out and about without your wedding ring. If you hate the idea of marriage so much, maybe stop getting married all the time? Just a helpful thought.

It feels like “Glee” ended decades ago, but somehow we’re still talking about it. Did you know that towards the end of the show, stars Lea Michele and Naya Rivera had major drama? No? Here’s the scoop: Rivera admitted as much in her 2016 book, “Sorry Not Sorry,” saying that Michele stopped speaking to her completely by Season 6. She wrote, “I doubt we’ll ever sit Last week, news broke that Jenny Slate and Chris Evans had broken up. For those of you who didn’t know they were together — I know, right? Many sources have side-eyed their union, suspecting that Slate and Evans got together sometime during the 34-year-old actress’ now defunct marriage. According to TMZ, he’s already hooking up with randoms and inviting
them over to his friend’s “private mansion.” Insert requisite eye roll here, please. As much as I’d like to love Chris Evans, sometimes I fear that he suffers from being basic as hell. On the one hand, he’s a very good looking bro trapped in a Marvel contract. On the other hand, the 35-year-old “Captain America: Civil War” star has
been in a Twitter feud with a white nationalist troll for the last week, which is pretty fantastic. Maybe, just maybe, he’s just the kind of complicated man we need during these complicated times.
here we are. According to Jezebel, sad Ben Affleck is over being Batman already. Is anyone surprised? During the latest episode of “Collider Movie Talk,” host John Campea said, “Please take this with a grain of salt … I’ve talked to three separate people, who are connected in some way, to what is going on
over at Warner Bros.” Campea continued, “They’re telling me that Ben Affleck, make no mistake, he does want out. He doesn’t want to be Batman anymore.” It’s crazy, because nobody even asked Ben Affleck to be Batman, and now he wants out of it. Thanks for giving the people the opposite of what they wanted, dude.
More on that Lea MicheleNaya Rivera feud on her couch and eat kale together again, but the rumors of our ‘feud’ were blown out of proportion.” Have you stopped giggling yet? So ridiculous, these two. Anyway: In promoting his newest effort, “Feud,” Ryan Murphy (who wrote, directed and produced “Glee”) finally spoke up about the supposed longstanding tension — and the women weren’t the only ones clashing.
“There were many boys on our show that didn’t get along,” he said. “And you never hear about that. You never hear about that in our culture.” Touche, my dude. Touche. Then again, “Feud” is about the legendary rivalry between actresses Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, so maybe it’s OK to take advantage of the competition between women if it’s for a paycheck.

It just has to be the right circumstances. When the legendary actor was making “John Wick back in 2013, the producers asked him if he’d come back for a sequel. “I said, ‘New York, two weeks in December? I’ll be there, thank you!’ he recalls. The last decade has seen a run of small, fun roles, on top of longer stretches in the likes of “Ray Donovan and the forthcoming “American Gods. It shows how laidback and fun the real McShane is — more the light-hearted antique dealer of “Lovejoy than sweary Al Swearengen on “Deadwood, which still has a chance of coming back. “Chapter 2 brings you back to New York, where you’ve had a history. I like that my introduction to you was as a terrifying gangster, who can freeze the blood with a cold stare. This was before “Deadwood,â€? but up till then you were largely known for the very nice, if rogueish, Lovejoy. It seems like “Sexy Beastâ€? was your entree into playing dark and scary. Well, I had six years of the show, which was very successful. But after that you have to stay away from TV for a while. When it finished, I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life on television. So I did a couple plays and just stayed out of it for a few years.
Taking it easy McShane is 74, meaning, unlike Keanu Reeves, he doesn’t have to do much physical work in the new “John Wick.â€? Besides, he’s done his share. His career goes back to the 1960s, and he’s done scores of stunts in movies like “Villain,â€? with Richard Burton, and “Sitting Target,â€? with Oliver Reed. He even stretched his legs a bit on “Deadwoodâ€? from time to time. He does remember having a big ďŹ ght with Andy Samberg in 2007’s “Hot Rod.â€? But now he’s good. “You reach a certain age and you’re like, ‘I’m happy watching Keanu doing all that, thank you very much,’â€? McShane tells us.
“Lovejoy isn’t as well known in America as in Britain. Are Americans shocked that you can play bubbly? We’ve all got previous lives. Social media sensation Hailey Knox turns just 18 next month, but the teen singer-songwriter is spending her February on the road with husband-wife folk band, Us the Duo. She’s not rattled, though. Knox already got her first brush with fame while on tour with Charlie Puth in late 2016, and the “Awkward” singer admits she’s still a bit starstruck from the experience. “It was surreal because I listen to him on the radio,” she gushes, remembering their first sold-out date at New York City’s Beacon Theatre. “It was literally a dream.” Currently nominated for iHeartRadio’s Social Media Star Award, the YouNow celeb calls in from the road to discuss her upcoming album, how to stay healthy while on the road and how she keeps up with her family
while away from home. Road warrior Knox says the biggest concern of being on tour is staying healthy. “The travel takes a toll on you, definitely,” she explains. It’s all about staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, remembering to eat and preserving her voice. “If you get sick, it’s the end.” Before each show, Knox practices her voice warmups, but she admits she still gets shy. “They get pretty annoying. I would hide in a corner so I don’t annoy everybody,” she giggles. “I get pretty nervous too, so I try to calm myself down,” adding that she utilizes meditation to reduce her jitters. Family is everything Knox jokes about her social media presence, saying her mom loves it and if anything, encourages it. “I’ll send her some photos and she’ll post them, saying ‘Hailey’s in Canada now!’” On tour, her mom and her sister are only a “FaceTime call away,”

supporting her in every way they can. Meanwhile, Knox’s father will join her on tour. “He kind of acts as like security guard in a way,” she adds, “making sure things are going well.” Ode to the awkward teens Knox made her debut with EP entitled “A Little Awkward” last June. And, as the name implies, her lyrics for songs like “Geeks” and “My Worst Enemy” stemmed from typical high school awkwardness and teenage struggles. While details and a release date for her follow-up full-length are up in the air, Knox assures us something exciting is in the works: “I can’t wait to get this stuff out there!”

Mom, Dad: It’s almost February break Here’s how to spend on it on the slopes. ERIC WILBUR @GlobeEricWilbur letters@metro.us
Among the few critical periods for the New England ski industry every season, this year’s February vacation break comes on the heels of what the resorts might call the best advertising they can get. The mountains have been getting hammered with snow, but it’s the recent pair of storms in the Boston area that help give the “snow in your backyard” mentality that might easier prompt some to head north more than others. There’s plenty to do waiting, whether you’re all booked and ready to go, or looking for a lastminute deal in order to enjoy what is some of the best skiing of the season. In Maine, Sugarloaf

Cannon Mountain will host family fun nights Feb. 18 and 25, including fireworks, a torchlight parade, and live music. Loon Mountain Resort will host a “Snowshoe and S’mores Après Party” on Feb. 23, with a snowshoe tour, followed by hors d’oeuvres, hot cocoa and s’mores. In Vermont, the week kicks off with a torchlight parade and fireworks at Okemo Mountain Resort, paving the way for a busy schedule
that includes a first-hand encounter with live falcons and hawks, as presented by the Vermont Institute of Natural Science. Mount Snow also boasts a torchlight parade and fireworks Feb. 22. There will be an ice-carving display at Sugarbush Mountain Resort, along with other activities geared to the younger set, like a kids torchlight parade and pizza and movie night. LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE
How to build your dream house using YouTube tutorials Cara Brookins built a two-story, five-bedroom home with her family. DMITRY BELYAEV Metro World News letters@metro.us
It was 2008 when Cara Brookins took her four children (ages 2, 7,11 and 15) and left her abusive husband. The family of five moved into a tiny house outside Little Rock, Arkansas, while in search of a better life. Unable to find a property to suit them, the mother of four figured out that if she sold a small property she owned, they’d have enough money to buy an acre of land and supplies to build a dream house. Brookins turned to YouTube videos, and without any construction experience, managed to build a two-story, five-bedroom house. We chat with Brookins to find out how it went down. What led you to build a house on your own? I drove past a house that had been broken by a tornado so I could see inside the walls. It all looked so simple and I thought, “I bet if I really set my mind to it, I could put that back together.” From there, the idea grew into starting all the way over and building my own new house. I mentioned it to my kids and they were all-in right from
the start. We needed a safe place to live, and I was determined to do something big. So building a house felt like the most natural solution in the world.
Did you find YouTube to be a helpful resource? YouTube was a lot different in 2008. The videos were lower-quality and not as organized. We used multiple videos for each project to learn multiple ways to do each thing, like frame a window or run a sewer line. And we tried to understand why each thing was done a certain way
The process
rather than just how to do it. Because we were watching at home on a computer — no smartphones! — and would have to remember everything to make it work the next day on the job site. What was the hardest part of building the house? The foundation was the most difficult for a couple of reasons. First, because it was right at the beginning when we
home
were still really weak. Building the muscles we’d need to build the house by hauling huge concrete blocks around in cold January wind was a slow and painful process. Second, we realized at that early stage how emotionally difficult it was going to be to build a house. We were so far in over our heads. And it was going to take nine months of 20 hour days under intense focus to get it all done. How much time did it take? I took out a construction loan to build the house and the terms were nine months. So I had to pass all of my city and bank inspections for my certificate of occupancy in this time. I was working full time as a computer programmer/systems analyst and my kids were in school. So we put in 20 hour days to get everything done. How does it feel to live in a house you’ve built on your own? Every single day there’s a flash of memory as I walk under a doorframe that we had trouble installing, or I remember climbing around in the rafters or down in the mud. After being afraid and feeling like I had no control of my life for so many years, being wrapped in walls we built with our own hands is an incredible feeling. There is nothing more empowering that building something so much bigger than ourselves.

16 HEALTH GUIDE
Dana Farber Provides Tips on How to Educate Kids About Cancer Prevention While not all cancers can be prevented, there are a number of strategies and techniques to help reduce cancer risk, even for those with inherited cancer genes. It’s important to start implementing healthful habits early in life, and as a parent, to educate kids about the importance of cancer prevention. However, it can be difficult to know where to start, especially with younger children. Here are some tips for talking with and informing kids about prevention. Practice sun safety. The majority of damaging sun exposure occurs in the first 18 years of our lives, so it’s paramount to protect children’s skin. Teach your child to be safe in the sun by letting let them help pick out a sunscreen with lots of SPF, or a new sunhat for outdoor wear. They will be more responsible about protecting their skin when they get to help pick out their protective gear. You can also apply sunscreen as a family and explain why everyone needs to wear it – setting a good example can go a long way. Develop healthy eating habits. Get kids involved in the kitchen early on by developing child-friendly balanced meal plans and cooking healthy recipes as a family. Dana-Farber nutritionist Stacy Kennedy, RD, MPH, recommends sharing meals as a family
whenever possible and introducing kids to healthy habits by modeling good behavior as parents. “The best way for parents to encourage kids to eat healthfully is to do so themselves,” Kennedy says. And besides what you eat and how the family eats are equally important for establishing healthy habits, she notes. “The family dinner is the number one aspect correlated to a child’s academic success; more than hours spent doing homework, tutors, and sports,” Kennedy adds. “Sit with your child as often as possible and enjoy eating together.” Exercise. There are numerous physical and mental benefits to regular exercise. Staying fit doesn’t have to be a chore for your kids; it can be a fun activity they share with you. Establish an exercise routine, such as family walks or trips to the pool. Talk with your kids about why exercising is important, and
ask them for suggestions about new things they may want to try. Kennedy enjoys walking to the local farmer’s market on weekends with her sons and having them help pick out fresh produce, a good way to mix a healthy diet with family exercise. Follow screening guidelines. Familiarizing yourself with screening recommendations can greatly reduce your risk for certain types of cancer. If you are being screened regularly for breast, cervical, colon, or skin cancer, among others, talk with your children about why you choose to do this and how it helps you stay healthy. Modeling this behavior for them will help your kids know what to do for themselves when the time comes. SPIT IN THE FACE The Bruins-Canadiens rivalry hasn’t been all too cut-throat in recent years but that changed in a hurry on Tuesday as Montreal fired head coach Michel Therrien and replaced him with former B’s coach Claude Julien. Julien was out of work for just one week, as the Bruins dumped the coach that brought them the 2011 Stanley Cup during the Patriots’ victory parade throughout the streets of Boston on Feb. 7. “I came to the conclusion that our team needed a new energy, a new voice, a new direction,” Montreal GM Marc Bergevin said. “Claude Julien is an experienced and well respected coach with a good knowledge
of the Montreal market. Claude has been very successful as an NHL coach and he won the Stanley Cup. Today we hired the best available coach, and one of the league’s best.” It is so poetic that this happened to the Bruins’ frontoffice. They took the coward’s way out and now Claude is up North. Bruins fans are forgiven if they want to be a Canadiens fan for two seconds this week. The Bruins and Habs unfortunately do not meet again this season.

THE NAME GAME In the classic film“Office Space,” character Michael Bolton speaks out about his unfortunate name and disses the 90s love song singer who also bears it. “Why should I change (my name)? He’s the one who sucks!” Much respect to those who were born with a horrible name, but refuse to take the easy way out. Baltimore area sports-
caster Gerry Sandusky (not to be confused with the Penn State child molester) has been ripped to shreds by people on Twitter in the past few days (and years). In response to the social media hate, the good Gerry Sandusky tweeted, “To all who again invite me to spend eternity in hell, just a friendly reminder. I’m Gerry with a G — no relation
to the former Penn State coach.” Let’s now show some mercy to other real life people with unfortunate names: American indoor volleyball player Destinee Hooker, former International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound, Japanese volleyball player Yoshie Takeshita and civilians Jesus Condom and Moe Lester.
NB-AARP N Nostalgia is a powerful emotion, e in i fact it’s THE emoT tion when t it i comes to t sports fans. Team colors, the ssmell of hot dogs at the ballpark and tthe smell of stale beer at the ballpark all conjure up the best of memories. m Hip-hop iicon Ice Cube is i banking on o nostalgia to move his new 3-on-3 basketball league k fforward, and he’s bet correctly … because there’s no t
way this thing doesn’t work — so long as these guys actually show up and play (and that’s a big question mark). Here are some of the big names that are slated to participate in the league, which will tour American cities this summer: Allen Iverson, Latrell Sprewell, J.R. Rider, Chauncey Billups, Mahmoud AbdulRauf, Kenny Anderson, Kenyon Martin, Stephen Jackson, Jermaine O’Neal, Bonzi Wells and Mike Bibby. The old-timers games in baseball are always fun, but I’ve always wondered why this couldn’t work in basketball. Despite all the torn ACLs and severely sprained ankles, watching old basketball players try to relive their glory years is theatre at its absolute peak.

Taurus Difficulties with a colleague will set you back. Don’t meddle or interfere in someone else’s personal affairs. Focus on making personal changes, not on changing others.
Scorpio Take care of legal and financial matters on your own. Keeping secrets will be in your best interest. Make changes at home that will allow you to live life your way.
