The New York Times reported that phone call records and intercepted calls showed members of Trump’s presidential campaign and other Trump associates had repeated

contacts with senior Russian intelligence oﬃcials in the year before the Nov. 8 election. Republican Trump critics including Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham voiced fresh consternation, but comments by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, who has been a Trump supporter, increased the pressure on the White House. Robert Durst returned to a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday to face a prosecution witness whose identity was being kept secret until taking the stand. Durst is charged with ﬁrst-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a writer and longtime conﬁdante of his, Susan Berman, in December 2000, and prosecutors say the witness fears his or her life may be put in danger by testifying. Berman was found

slain in her Los Angeles home not long after police in New York had reopened an investigation into the disappearance and presumed killing of Durst’s spouse, Kathleen, two decades earlier. Prosecutors said they suspect Durst killed Berman because of what she knew about his wife’s unsolved demise in 1982. Fast-food chain executive Andrew Puzder formally withdrew his name from consideration to be U.S. Secretary of Labor on Wednesday amid mounting concerns he could not win enough Republican support to get conﬁrmed by the U.S. Senate. “After careful consideration and discussions with my family, I am withdrawing my nomination for Secretary of Labor,” Puzder said in a state-

VERIZON CLOSE TO YAHOO DEAL

Verizon Communications Inc. is close to a revised deal to buy Yahoo Inc.’s core internet business for $250 million to $350 million less than the original agreed price of $4.83 billion, according to a source briefed on the matter. Since last year, Verizon had been trying to persuade Yahoo to amend the terms of the acquisition agreement to reﬂect the economic damage from two cy-

berattacks. A source told Reuters that the deal, which could come as soon as this week, will entail Verizon and Yahoo sharing the liability from potential lawsuits related to the data breaches. Another person familiar with the situation said the price cut was likely to be around $250 million, a ﬁgure that Bloomberg reported earlier on Wednesday. Verizon and Yahoo declined to comment. COSTS OF EARLY BALLOTS Auditor: State should cover early voting costs Massachusetts cities and towns spent an estimated $720,000 to comply with the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new early voting law, and the state auditor says the government should be on the hook for the tab. When Massachusetts introduced early voting for the November general election, the state required all cities and towns to meet certain requirements:Â oďŹ&#x20AC;ering at least

one poll location to be open during business hours for 12 days leading up to Election Day, and oďŹ&#x20AC;er early voting by mail. Auditor Suzanne Bump said the costs of providing these new services added up to an unfunded mandate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The early voting law certainly is to be regarded a success. It did, however, mandate new procedures for clerks. Some of these should be paid for by the state, not municipalities,â&#x20AC;? she said.

State law gives cities and towns recourse when faced with a potential unfunded mandate â&#x20AC;&#x201D; they can petition the state auditor to issue a determination. If it is determined an unfunded mandate exists, they can seek exemption from the courts in the absence of funding. Woburn and Oxford petitioned Bump, who determined some of the early voting costs should be paid for by the state â&#x20AC;&#x201D; about $5,400 for Woburn and $1,500 for Oxford.

Bump queried Massachusetts municipalities to ďŹ nd out what the expenses were, making a distinction between required and optional costs. More than a million people â&#x20AC;&#x201D; about 22 percent of Massachusettsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; registered voters â&#x20AC;&#x201D; voted early. Lawmakers did oďŹ&#x20AC;er some grant money to cities and towns when the law was passed in 2014, but Bump said it was insuďŹ&#x192;cient.Â ERIN TIERNAN

A paramedic with the St. Louis Fire DepartmentÂ apologized Tuesday after he lied about helping victims at the scene of the Boston bombing in 2013, according to the department. Paramedic Shawn Daniel told his supervisors he rushed to help bombing victims after the April 15, 2013, attack that injured hundreds, even going so far as to show them a photo that he claimed was of him caring for a victim. But after a now-deletedÂ Facebook post went viral, Danielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story was proved to be a lie. In a Jan. 18Â Facebook post, St. Louis Fire DepartmentÂ praisedÂ Daniel as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;hometown hero,â&#x20AC;? a regular feature to introduce department personnel. The post read: â&#x20AC;&#x153;ShawnÂ Daniel was amongst the many emergency responders who ran towards the blast

site to assist the injured.â&#x20AC;? Shortly after the post went public, several members of the first responder community in Boston and New Hampshire questioned whether Daniel was really there.Â An internal investigation proved Daniel had lied to the department. The man in the photo turned out to be a Boston firefighter, who Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said wishes to remain anonymousÂ duringÂ an interview with Fox 25. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s troubling that a person who is not a member is claiming to be a member,â&#x20AC;? he said. Daniel issued a statement via the department Tuesday, saying he â&#x20AC;&#x153;apologizes for providing false information, and for bringing undo press and bad publicity onto the department.â&#x20AC;? The department also apologized to all members ofÂ the first responder communityÂ who were â&#x20AC;&#x153;rightfully offendedâ&#x20AC;? by Danielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lies. The department did not indicate what disciplinary action Daniel would face, saying the issue would be dealt with as an â&#x20AC;&#x153;internal personnel matter.â&#x20AC;?

Discrimination still rampant in sharing economy, but researchers are hopeful it will be fixed By recognizing that racial bias occurs on platforms like Lyft and Airbnb, new startups can work on ways to stop it. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

The sharing economy clearly has its benefits, as the large success of services like Uber, Lyft and Airbnb show, but it also bears a shameful blemish: documented discrimination. Airbnb guests with “distinctively AfricanAmerican names” are 16 percent less likely to be accepted by a host as an identical guest with a white-sounding name, according to a Harvard Business School study published in September. A month later, MIT released a study which found that Uber drivers

in Boston were more than twice as likely to cancel rides for passengers with “African-American sounding” names, compared to stereotypical “white sounding” names. The good news, though, is that these companies seem eager to right their wrongs. Airbnb quickly adopted new rules to fight discrimination by its hosts and launched a new ad campaign during the Super Bowl called #WeAccept. Lyft and Uber also immediately reached out to the MIT researchers, said Chris Knittel, one of the study’s authors and an MIT Sloan professor. Knittel spoke during an MIT Sloan Expert Series on Wednesday about their next steps. “We have continued conversations with [Uber and Lyft], and we’re trying to design follow-up studies to minimize the amount of discrimina-

tion occurring,” he said. “We’re not talking specifics yet, but I can say that the companies understand our research and want to be better.” While no cancelation effect was found by researchers with Lyft in Boston, Knittel noted this does not mean there was

no discrimination. Lyft drivers see a user’s name before they accept the ride, he said, meaning they can skip a person altogether rather than canceling after they accept the ride. Uber’s platform shows a user’s name only after the driver accepts the ride.

When asked how sharing economy startups can better reduce racial bias, Knittel said that the fact that this research exists is already helpful. “First is to be aware of this, and I think Uber, Lyft and Airbnb maybe were caught off guard

with the amount of discrimination taking place,” he said. “The research we performed gives new startups a head start on knowing that this is an issue and designing platforms by thinking of ways to limit discrimination.”

At Harvard, hip-hop is getting its place in history The “Classic Crates” project will archive 200 of the most influential hip-hop albums. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

Within Harvard’s hallowed halls, hip-hop music is being recognized as the art form its admirers have long known it to be. Harvard researchers are in the process of archiving 200 of the most significant hip-hop albums as part of a project called Classic Crates. The work will involve assembling and documenting the history of each album, including digital and vinyl recordings, along with information on sample tracks used in some songs and even the liner notes and

other information that went into its creation. Each package will help explain the influence and impact that album has had. The first four albums in the archives include a tour through 1990s hiphop along with a representation from the recent past. They are: A Tribe Called Quest’s “The Low End Theory” from 1991; Nas’ “Illmatic,” which appeared three years later; Lauryn Hill’s breakout album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” from 1998; and Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly,” from 2015. “I think the recognition of hip-hop as a true American artform is something that is not necessarily widely recognized,” said Brionna Atkins, a staff member at Harvard’s Hiphop Archive & Research Institute. That, she said, is

She helps lead the undergraduate research associates, who work directly on the Classic Crates project by filling out the background work that goes into each archival package. It’s a lot of work, Atkins admitted. The archival packages include earlier recorded versions of songs, details on every sample, collected articles and reviews of the albums, music videos and

more. But, she added, it’s worth it to highlight the importance of these musical marvels. The archived albums aren’t released in order of importance and are not ranked, the staff said, but chosen instead for their overall significance to the form. Beginning this year, Classic Crates will announce 10 archived albums each year. This year’s picks are expected in the fall.

Because in an attempt to celebrate diversity, Vogue prominently featured Karlie Kloss shot in Japan and styled as, that’s right, a geisha. The tone-deaf spread has everything: a sumo wrestler; Kloss with a long black weave tumbling effortlessly down her back; she’s even walking down the stairs of a tea house... dressed as a geisha.

The Cut notes that Vogue has a sordid history of publishing culturally insensitive fashion editorials, but it kind of seems like they could have had a better understanding of the word diversity and what it actually encompasses. After the blowback, the 24-year-old model tweeted an apology, writing, “These images appropriate a culture that is not my own and I am truly sorry for participating in a shoot that was not culturally sensitive.” OK, cute apology or whatever. Page Six has the scoop on the emails, which are from 2012. First, in an exchange between Dr. Luke and Kesha’s manager, Monica Cornia, regarding Kesha’s single “We R Who We R,” Dr. Luke says “I don’t give a s—t what

you want. If you were smart, you would go in and sing it. Also in the exchange, the 43-year old producer comments about Kesha’s weight, calling her a “fat f—king refrigerator,” and insisted top songwriters didn’t want to give Kesha songs because of her weight. Here’s hoping that these emails help Kesha’s long nightmare come to an end.

A Khloe Kardashian ad is under fire for bodyshaming young women Another day, another Kardashian being accused of promoting unattainable body standards. A new Protein World billboard in London is under fire for featuring Khloe Kardashian, Photoshopped to oblivion and selling a 30-day weight loss plan. The ad unironically reads, “Can You Keep Up With A Kardashian?” Unfortunately, most of us can’t. Khloe can barely keep up with herself. It’s chill to get

all the alleged plastic surgery you want, and to Photoshop yourself whenever the mood strikes, but don’t chalk it up to diet and exercise. That’s rude. Kardashian hasn’t responded to the backlash, and let’s be honest: she probably never will. And if the music is any indication, this is the spot where if you’re feeling particularly like Don Draper on a given evening, you can say, “Give me something big and brown,” and they’ll

And while Bostonians certainly love their Korean food (Buk Kyung is a local fave) the fermented cabbage dish has found its way onto menus of all nationalities. Colorado The very first state to legalize recreational marijuana (on Jan. 1, 2014) accumulated more than $70 million in tax revenue in its first year — and already expanded its laws. So not only can anyone in Colorado buy pot, businesses will soon be able to create “cannabis consumption areas” where customers will be allowed smoke up. For now, tourists over the age of 21 can buy up to a quarter-ounce of weed and smoke in private areas such as homes, social clubs, “420-friendly” hotels or by riding in a cannabis tour bus.

Since July 2014, the Evergreen State has allowed recreational cannabis sales of up to an ounce to locals and tourists alike (aged 21 and up). For non-smokable forms, you can buy up to 16 ounces of marijuana-infused edibles or 72 ounces of beverages. It’s only legal to smoke in private areas, and you could face a small fine for smoking on the street.

Alaskans and tourists have legally lit up since February 2015, though its first retail dispensary, Herbal Outfitters in Valdez, only opened its doors last October. Now adults 21 and up can buy as much as an ounce for recreational use.

As of mid-December, purchase and possession of up to an ounce of weed is legal. But legislators are still tweaking regulations that may alter some of the 2016 ballot-approved initiative, like changing the tax rate for marijuana sales and raising the legal age from 21 to 25. Maine Voters approved recreational cannabis in 2016; the new law allows individual possession of up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana, which is more than double the limit in most states. While possession and consumption by adults are legal, licensed dispensaries likely won’t open doors until well into 2018.

California The first state to legalize medical marijuana back in 1996 didn’t join the recreational-use party until 2016. And tourists will have to wait until 2018 to actually buy it, when the first retail licenses are issued. If you have a friend who lives there, they can “gift” you up to an ounce.

Nevada Las Vegas joined the legal weed party in 2016. As of Jan. 1, adults 21 and

over can possess up to an ounce of cannabis concentrates, though the first pot dispensaries aren’t slated to start opening until January 2018.

Washington, D.C. D.C. voters legalized recreational marijuana in 2014, but it’s tricky: In the city limits, it’s legal to possess up to 2 ounces, but technically you can’t buy or sell it — you have to find someone to “gift” you up to an ounce.

Red Sox players to keep close tabs on during spring training

Despite all the snow on the ground right now and the feeling that winter isn’t going away anytime soon, the Red Sox will be playing regular season baseball at Fenway Park just 46 days from today. For reference, New Year’s Day was just 46 days ago and that doesn’t seem all that long ago — so we’re getting close to baseball season. It’s difficult to remember a Red Sox season with so much anticipation, as the Sox have the best odds in baseball (along with the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs) to win this year’s title at 9/2 (via Bovada.LV). Before we get to October and before we even get to Opening Day on Yawkey Way, there is plenty of spring training baseball to be played and the shape of the 2017 Red Sox will be molded. Here are three players to keep close tabs on this spring.

Andrew Benintendi Sox fans got a brief glimpse of Benintendi’s potential last season at the Major League level as the 22-year-old outfielder hit .295 with two homers and 14 RBI in 34 games down the stretch. He also had a memorable home run-robbing catch against Tampa Bay in August when he climbed the left field wall at Tropicana Field and pulled back a ball off the bat of the Rays’ Steven Souza. Benintendi was mentioned in trade rumors this past winter, particularly in the minutes before the Sox executed their blockbuster trade with

the White Sox for Chris Sale. Sox boss Dave Dombrowski claims that the Sox were hell-bent on holding onto the young left fielder. “We never came close to trading him in the wintertime,” Dombrowski said this past week. “He’s an all-around player. He can hit, I think he has a beautiful swing and will

hit with some power and drive the ball. I don’t know if he’ll be a big power guy, but he’ll hit with enough power.” Benintendi is set to make up arguably the best b outfield in baseball with w Mookie Betts in i center and Jackie Bradley Jr. J in right.

good reason. In the past three seasons, Sale posted a sparkling 42-25 win-loss mark and struck out an absurd 715 batters. ESPN Stats and Info published a story this week regarding how the Red Sox’ outstanding defense could lift Sale to even greater heights. In it, ESPN pointed out that Boston was second in the AL in defensive runs saved with 54 last year. The Sox also added the reigning AL Gold Glove winner at first base in Mitch Moreland, so it

should be extremely tough for opposing teams to light up the scoreboard during Sale stars this spring and summer. Of course, there were plenty of glowing remarks regarding David Price a year ago at this time and Price struggled during his first season in Boston. Sale is at least saying all the right things in Fort Myers. “I have very high expectations for myself,” Sale said. “I demand a lot from myself. I don’t think it’ll be anything different.

The Panda Redemption tour is underway in Florida. Sandoval looks like Channing Tatum compared to what he looked like one year ago, but whether or not a good physique translates to hits remains to be seen. It’s been awhile since the 30-year-old Sandoval was a legit threat at the plate. He hasn’t earned an All-Star nod since 2012 and he hasn’t finished a season having batted over .300 since that same year. His RBI totals — which were never all that impressive to begin with — have dipped every season since 2013, going from 79 to 73 to 47 in 2015 (his first year in Boston). As for the starting job at third base, the Red Sox are at least saying that there will be a competition for the spot during spring training. Travis Shaw beat out a beat-up Sandoval in Fort Myers last year, but the Sox wound up trading Shaw this winter. Brock Holt will be the man in charge of pushing Sandoval this spring.

Stevensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; profile should get boost at All-Star weekend Though the Celtics spent much of this season looking up in the standings at the Toronto Raptors, the two teams have gone in different directions as of late. Going into the All-Star break, the Celtics will hold the No. 2 spot in the Eastern Conference standings, with the Raptors floating somewhere between the third and sixth spot. That means Brad Stevens is your East All-Star Team head coach. (By rule, Cavaliers head coach Ty Lue canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t coach the team two years in a row.) This can only be seen as good thing for the Boston Celtics organization.
