PUZDER WITHDRAWS AS US LAWMAKERS PUSH FOR MYSTERY WITNESS TO ANSWERS ON RUSSIA TIES TESTIFY AGAINST DURST LABOR DEPT. NOMINEE

1

Amid a deepening crisis over the relationship between President Donald Trump’s aides and Russia, some Republicans issued their boldest challenge yet and vowed to get to the bottom of the matter, while Democrats demanded an independent probe. The New York Times reported that phone call records and intercepted calls showed members of Trump’s presidential campaign and other Trump associates had repeated

contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the Nov. 8 election. Republican Trump critics including Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham voiced fresh consternation, but comments by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, who has been a Trump supporter, increased the pressure on the White House. Robert Durst returned to a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday to face a prosecution witness whose identity was being kept secret until taking the stand. Durst is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a writer and longtime confidante of his, Susan Berman, in December 2000, and prosecutors say the witness fears his or her life may be put in danger by testifying. Berman was found

slain in her Los Angeles home not long after police in New York had reopened an investigation into the disappearance and presumed killing of Durst’s spouse, Kathleen, two decades earlier. Prosecutors said they suspect Durst killed Berman because of what she knew about his wife’s unsolved demise in 1982. The judge has given approval for Wednesday’s witness to testify well in advance of the actual trial. REUTERS

Fast-food chain executive Andrew Puzder formally withdrew his name from consideration to be U.S. Secretary of Labor on Wednesday amid mounting concerns he could not win enough Republican support to get confirmed by the U.S. Senate. “After careful consideration and discussions with my family, I am withdrawing my nomination for Secretary of Labor,” Puzder said in a state-

ment. “While I won’t be serving in the administration, I fully support the president and his highly qualified team.”REUTERS

MEETING NETANYAHU, TRUMP BACKS AWAY FROM COMMITMENT TO PALESTINIAN STATE

5

President Donald Trump dropped a U.S. commitment to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a longstanding bedrock of Middle East policy, even as he urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to curb settlement construction. In the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since Trump’s victory in the 2016 election, the Republican president backed away from a U.S. embrace of the eventual creation of a Palestinian state, upending a position taken by successive administrations and the international community. “I’m looking at two states and one state, and I like the one both parties like,” Trump told a joint news conference with Netanyahu. “I can live with either one.” REUTERS GETTY IMAGES

VERIZON CLOSE TO YAHOO DEAL

4

Verizon Communications Inc. is close to a revised deal to buy Yahoo Inc.’s core internet business for $250 million to $350 million less than the original agreed price of $4.83 billion, according to a source briefed on the matter. Since last year, Verizon had been trying to persuade Yahoo to amend the terms of the acquisition agreement to reflect the economic damage from two cy-

berattacks. A source told Reuters that the deal, which could come as soon as this week, will entail Verizon and Yahoo sharing the liability from potential lawsuits related to the data breaches. Another person familiar with the situation said the price cut was likely to be around $250 million, a figure that Bloomberg reported earlier on Wednesday. Verizon and Yahoo declined to comment. COSTS OF EARLY BALLOTS Auditor: State should cover early voting costs Massachusetts cities and towns spent an estimated $720,000 to comply with the state’s new early voting law, and the state auditor says the government should be on the hook for the tab. When Massachusetts introduced early voting for the November general election, the state required all cities and towns to meet certain requirements: oering at least

one poll location to be open during business hours for 12 days leading up to Election Day, and oer early voting by mail. Auditor Suzanne Bump said the costs of providing these new services added up to an unfunded mandate. “The early voting law certainly is to be regarded a success. It did, however, mandate new procedures for clerks. Some of these should be paid for by the state, not municipalities,â€? she said.

State law gives cities and towns recourse when faced with a potential unfunded mandate — they can petition the state auditor to issue a determination. If it is determined an unfunded mandate exists, they can seek exemption from the courts in the absence of funding. Woburn and Oxford petitioned Bump, who determined some of the early voting costs should be paid for by the state — about $5,400 for Woburn and $1,500 for Oxford.

Bump queried Massachusetts municipalities to ďŹ nd out what the expenses were, making a distinction between required and optional costs. More than a million people — about 22 percent of Massachusetts’ registered voters — voted early. Lawmakers did oer some grant money to cities and towns when the law was passed in 2014, but Bump said it was insuďŹƒcient. ERIN TIERNAN

Paramedic lies about helping victims of Boston bombing A photo the paramedic said showed him caring for a victim eventually did him in. ERIN TIERNAN @erintiernan

erin.tiernan@metro.us

A paramedic with the St. Louis Fire Department apologized Tuesday after he lied about helping victims at the scene of the Boston bombing in 2013, according to the department. Paramedic Shawn Daniel told his supervisors he rushed to help bombing victims after the April 15, 2013, attack that injured hundreds, even going so far as to show them a photo that he claimed was of him caring for a victim. But after a now-deleted Facebook post went viral, Daniel’s story was proved to be a lie. In a Jan. 18 Facebook post, St. Louis Fire Department praised Daniel as a “hometown hero,â€? a regular feature to introduce department personnel. The post read: “Shawn Daniel was amongst the many emergency responders who ran towards the blast

site to assist the injured.â€? Shortly after the post went public, several members of the first responder community in Boston and New Hampshire questioned whether Daniel was really there. An internal investigation proved Daniel had lied to the department. The man in the photo turned out to be a Boston firefighter, who Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said wishes to remain anonymous during an interview with Fox 25. “It’s troubling that a person who is not a member is claiming to be a member,â€? he said. Daniel issued a statement via the department Tuesday, saying he “apologizes for providing false information, and for bringing undo press and bad publicity onto the department.â€? The department also apologized to all members of the first responder community who were “rightfully offendedâ€? by Daniel’s lies. The department did not indicate what disciplinary action Daniel would face, saying the issue would be dealt with as an “internal personnel matter.â€?

Discrimination still rampant in sharing economy, but researchers are hopeful it will be fixed By recognizing that racial bias occurs on platforms like Lyft and Airbnb, new startups can work on ways to stop it. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

The sharing economy clearly has its benefits, as the large success of services like Uber, Lyft and Airbnb show, but it also bears a shameful blemish: documented discrimination. Airbnb guests with “distinctively AfricanAmerican names” are 16 percent less likely to be accepted by a host as an identical guest with a white-sounding name, according to a Harvard Business School study published in September. A month later, MIT released a study which found that Uber drivers

in Boston were more than twice as likely to cancel rides for passengers with “African-American sounding” names, compared to stereotypical “white sounding” names. The good news, though, is that these companies seem eager to right their wrongs. Airbnb quickly adopted new rules to fight discrimination by its hosts and launched a new ad campaign during the Super Bowl called #WeAccept. Lyft and Uber also immediately reached out to the MIT researchers, said Chris Knittel, one of the study’s authors and an MIT Sloan professor. Knittel spoke during an MIT Sloan Expert Series on Wednesday about their next steps. “We have continued conversations with [Uber and Lyft], and we’re trying to design follow-up studies to minimize the amount of discrimina-

tion occurring,” he said. “We’re not talking specifics yet, but I can say that the companies understand our research and want to be better.” While no cancelation effect was found by researchers with Lyft in Boston, Knittel noted this does not mean there was

no discrimination. Lyft drivers see a user’s name before they accept the ride, he said, meaning they can skip a person altogether rather than canceling after they accept the ride. Uber’s platform shows a user’s name only after the driver accepts the ride.

When asked how sharing economy startups can better reduce racial bias, Knittel said that the fact that this research exists is already helpful. “First is to be aware of this, and I think Uber, Lyft and Airbnb maybe were caught off guard

with the amount of discrimination taking place,” he said. “The research we performed gives new startups a head start on knowing that this is an issue and designing platforms by thinking of ways to limit discrimination.”

At Harvard, hip-hop is getting its place in history The “Classic Crates” project will archive 200 of the most influential hip-hop albums. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

Within Harvard’s hallowed halls, hip-hop music is being recognized as the art form its admirers have long known it to be. Harvard researchers are in the process of archiving 200 of the most significant hip-hop albums as part of a project called Classic Crates. The work will involve assembling and documenting the history of each album, including digital and vinyl recordings, along with information on sample tracks used in some songs and even the liner notes and

other information that went into its creation. Each package will help explain the influence and impact that album has had. The first four albums in the archives include a tour through 1990s hiphop along with a representation from the recent past. They are: A Tribe Called Quest’s “The Low End Theory” from 1991; Nas’ “Illmatic,” which appeared three years later; Lauryn Hill’s breakout album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” from 1998; and Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly,” from 2015. “I think the recognition of hip-hop as a true American artform is something that is not necessarily widely recognized,” said Brionna Atkins, a staff member at Harvard’s Hiphop Archive & Research Institute. That, she said, is

Impressions on a masterpiece A Tribe Called Quest’s “The Low End Theory” is one of the four albums first archived in Harvard’s Classic Crates project. Brionna Atkins, a staffer at the school’s Hiphop Archive & Research Institute, cited the album’s jazz sampling as “significant.” She added adding it can be “traced later to other artists using these techniques and drawing inspiration.” One prominent sample on the album uses a Miles Davis track. “So there’s these samples that are from 1980s, 1970s, 1960s that also reference another history and another period,” in addition to the period that A Tribe Called Quest represents, Atkins said.

“really a central act of the Classic Crates project … That it has a significant cultural presence — not just currently, but also how it connects to the past. The project is on firm ground, with a 2015 study published in the academic journal Royal Society Open Science, counting hip-hop as the most important music genre in our last half-century. Patrick Douthit, a Harvard fellow, college lec-

turer and music producer known as 9th Wonder, is the lead curator for the entire 200-album project. He’s working directly alongside Marcyliena Morgan, Harvard professor and director of the Hiphop Archive and Peter Laurence from the school’s Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library, along with peers in the hip-hop community and Harvard researchers. Atkins, 22, is a recent Harvard graduate and me-

dia coordinator at the Hiphop Archive. She helps lead the undergraduate research associates, who work directly on the Classic Crates project by filling out the background work that goes into each archival package. It’s a lot of work, Atkins admitted. The archival packages include earlier recorded versions of songs, details on every sample, collected articles and reviews of the albums, music videos and

more. But, she added, it’s worth it to highlight the importance of these musical marvels. The archived albums aren’t released in order of importance and are not ranked, the staff said, but chosen instead for their overall significance to the form. Beginning this year, Classic Crates will announce 10 archived albums each year. This year’s picks are expected in the fall.

FLYNN’S POST Sources: Trump oers national security adviser post to Vice Admiral Harward The Trump administration has oered the job of White House national security adviser, vacated by former U.S. intelligence oďŹƒcial Michael Flynn, to Vice Admiral Robert Harward, said two U.S. oďŹƒcials familiar with the matter. It was not immediately clear if Harward, a former deputy commander of U.S. Central Command who has Navy SEAL combat experience, had accepted the oer, according to sources. Flynn resigned on Monday after revelations that he had discussed U.S. sanctions on Russia with the Russian ambassador to the United States before President Donald Trump took oďŹƒce. Losing his national security adviser so soon after taking oďŹƒce is an embarrassment for the new Republican president, who has made national security a top priority. Harward, a Rhode Island native who went to school in Tehran before the Shah was toppled in 1979, did a tour on the National Security Council under former Republican President George W. Bush, working on counterterrorism. He also has combat experience on SEAL teams and served in Iraq and Afghanistan. REUTERS

The Weeknd’s new song puts Justin Bieber on blast

We can all agree that Justin Bieber is kind of all over the place. Especially when it comes to exgirlfriend Selena Gomez. Ever since rumors started about The Weeknd and Gomez, 24, getting together, Bieber has found a variety of ways to express his displeasure. According to Elle, he first told everyone who would listen that Gomez

was using The Weeknd for publicity. Then he called The Weeknd’s music “whack” to the paparazzi. Then he trolled the 26-year-old “Starboy” on his Instagram story this weekend. Because Justin Bieber is 22-yearsold and still hasn’t learned to have any freaking chill. During said shenanigans, The Weeknd —

Karlie Kloss is really sorry for posing as a geisha When you think about the word “diversity,” what comes to mind? A white lady dressed up as a geisha? No? That’s weird. Because in an attempt to celebrate diversity, Vogue prominently featured Karlie Kloss shot in Japan and styled as, that’s right, a geisha. The tone-deaf spread has everything: a sumo wrestler; Kloss with a long black weave tumbling effortlessly down her back; she’s even walking down the stairs of a tea house... dressed as a geisha.

The Cut notes that Vogue has a sordid history of publishing culturally insensitive fashion editorials, but it kind of seems like they could have had a better understanding of the word diversity and what it actually encompasses. After the blowback, the 24-year-old model tweeted an apology, writing, “These images appropriate a culture that is not my own and I am truly sorry for participating in a shoot that was not culturally sensitive.” OK, cute apology or whatever. Clearly, baby’s been talking to a PR professional. Vogue, unsurprisingly, has yet to respond. But also? How much longer are we going to have to deal with this whitewashing nonsense? It’s getting old, man.

real name Abel Tesfaye — was biding his time, waiting for his moment. And then, bam! Tuesday night he announced the release of his latest single “Some Way,” with Nav. And it really looks like the song these two cowrote is all about Tesfaye stealing Gomez from Bieber. Goodness gracious, these children must be incredibly bored. Mostly, Tesfaye talks about how good he is at sex, and also “I just took that chick, and I know you feelin’ some way, oh yeah,” which is giggle worthy. No word from Bieber yet, but the controversial pop star did lament his single status on his Instagram story for Valentine’s Day. Kids, man.

I love doing manual labor: chopping wood, laying stones — very simple tasks, where I’m as boring and offthe-grid as possible.

Films like this are a big departure from the dramas you’ve done, like “The Place Beyond the Pines.” If you did just one thing, you’d only be good at that one thing. Speaking of the immigration ban: Among the many Trump hoped to block from entering our country is esteemed ďŹ lmmaker Ashgar Farhadi, who just happens to hail from Iran. Out of protest, he won’t be attending this year’s Academy Awards, at which his latest — the excellent “The Salesman,â€? now in theaters — is nominated for Best Foreign-Language Film. Farhadi’s one of our ďŹ nest working ďŹ lmmakers, so feel free to head to FilmStruck and watch “A Separation,â€? one of his ďŹ lms that already did win an Oscar, back in 2011. An Ibsenesque drama about a divorcing couple that inadvertently almost destroys a lowincome family, it betrays its maker as a deep humanist, insightful about how good people can’t always control their worst instincts. It’s a work of deep, insightful humanism that now seems like a tonic in our crazy world.

It’s a totally worthy pick — one of Lynch’s most elusive yet seductive works, not to mention endlessly rewatchable. Originally made as a TV pilot, it was rejiggered as a movie when French ďŹ nanciers came to the rescue, giving Lynch the cash to tack on an ending. He changed nothing of the ďŹ rst two-thirds, and one of the richest ways to watch it is as a TV show, with clear spots for commercial breaks and storylines that will never be resolved, that eventually turns into a wackadoodle movie. WHERE TO EAT, DRINK & PLAY

Warm up this winter at these five live music venues

things to do Inside the brand new Supper Club at Capo in South Boston. PROVIDED

This February, in the words of the irreproachable Jim Morrison: “Set the night on fire.” GORDON DONNELLY @gord_donnelly

Gordon.Donnelly@metro.us

Enjoy that brief, inexplicable respite from the cold? The January that felt more like April? Yes, global warming is upon us, no matter what you heard in the GOP

debates. But it’s not yet absolute. February has made that clear. So where to hunker down, without getting all hygge? Well, if you’re like us, you like a little culture with your cozy. The live music at these five venues will get the juices flowing.

Supper Club at Capo 443 W. Broadway South Boston Capo’s brand-new Supper Club is all swank,

and all swing — and the food ain’t bad, either. This Metro writer can personally recommend the meatballs and the rigatoni Bolognese to be, unequivocally, very, very good. The Capo Old Fashioned is a fresh take on, well, an old fashioned. And if the music is any indication, this is the spot where if you’re feeling particularly like Don Draper on a given evening, you can say, “Give me something big and brown,” and they’ll

actually know what you’re talking about. (We saw that weird look you gave us, Bell in Hand.) The well-dressed brass ensemble Beantown Swing Orchestra is no stranger to the Supper Club, and if you want to spin a spritely pseudo-acquaintance to “Strangers in the Night,” or get spun, well, you can do that here. Upcoming acts: Conscious Reggae and Alex MacDougal

THE BEEHIVE, 541 TREMONT ST.

You can’t yet call yourself a jazz aficionado, or even a sensual person, if you haven’t patronized this South End staple. Whether you’re stopping in for brunch, dinner or just a drink, the jazz acts here are consistently evocative, and the live blues is some of the best around. For a cocktail, try their signature: the Queen Bee. Upcoming acts: Kevin Harris Trio, Michael Mayo Band, Noah Preminger WALLY’S CAFE, 427 MASSACHUSETTS AVE.

Don’t let the, shall we say, inauspicious exterior fool you — Wally’s is a gem. The sole holdover from an intersection — Mass. Avenue and Columbus — once famous for its jazz offerings, Wally’s still brings the heat, from a hole in the wall. You just missed Billie Holiday, but up-and-comers from Berklee and the New England Conservatory fill the void nicely. Upcoming acts: A series of anonymous jam sessions (not a Lemony Snicket spin-off) DARRYL’S CORNER BAR & KITCHEN, 604 COLUMBUS AVE.

On a South End-heavy list, choose Darryl’s for their Southernstyle comfort, spice, soul — all that jazz. The jambalaya is highly esteemed, but don’t sleep on the Sunday jazz-brunch-buffet. Upcoming acts: Souldelica, Sympli Whitney, Ashley Lewis THE HARP, 85 CAUSEWAY ST.

Conscious Reggae is set to perform at Supper Club at Capo tonight, while Alex MacDougal will follow up on Friday.

ALL IMAGES PROVIDED

If you don’t frequent The Harp, it’s probably because you’re in a relationship with someone you met there, and if so, we think that’s wonderful. But for those still looking to “meet” someone, or some-two (three, four … we don’t judge), and who value the role live music plays in facilitating that process, this is a great place for singles. Upcoming acts: JJ Rupp, 7 Day Weekend, Never in Vegas

18 THINGS TO DO

Vacation high Want to take a really relaxing trip? Here are your recreational pot destinations. Colorado The very first state to legalize recreational marijuana (on Jan. 1, 2014) accumulated more than $70 million in tax revenue in its first year — and already expanded its laws. So not only can anyone in Colorado buy pot, businesses will soon be able to create “cannabis consumption areas” where customers will be allowed smoke up. For now, tourists over the age of 21 can buy up to a quarter-ounce of weed and smoke in private areas such as homes, social clubs, “420-friendly” hotels or by riding in a cannabis tour bus.

Washington

Alaska

Since July 2014, the Evergreen State has allowed recreational cannabis sales of up to an ounce to locals and tourists alike (aged 21 and up). For non-smokable forms, you can buy up to 16 ounces of marijuana-infused edibles or 72 ounces of beverages. It’s only legal to smoke in private areas, and you could face a small fine for smoking on the street.

Alaskans and tourists have legally lit up since February 2015, though its first retail dispensary, Herbal Outfitters in Valdez, only opened its doors last October. Now adults 21 and up can buy as much as an ounce for recreational use.

Massachusetts

Oregon

As of mid-December, purchase and possession of up to an ounce of weed is legal. But legislators are still tweaking regulations that may alter some of the 2016 ballot-approved initiative, like changing the tax rate for marijuana sales and raising the legal age from 21 to 25. For now, retail dispensaries are still expected to start opening in 2018.

In 2014, voters approved recreational pot use in Oregon. Today, the state has as many marijuana dispensaries as Starbucks and McDonald’s outposts combined. Tourists (over 21) can choose from a wide array of consumerfriendly pot shops, where “budtenders” relay all the salient details about each strain, edible, beverage or concentrate — though

it must be consumed in private.

Maine Voters approved recreational cannabis in 2016; the new law allows individual possession of up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana, which is more than double the limit in most states. While possession and consumption by adults are legal, licensed dispensaries likely won’t open doors until well into 2018.

California The first state to legalize medical marijuana back in 1996 didn’t join the recreational-use party until 2016. And tourists will have to wait until 2018 to actually buy it, when the first retail licenses are issued. If you have a friend who lives there, they can “gift” you up to an ounce.

Nevada Las Vegas joined the legal weed party in 2016. As of Jan. 1, adults 21 and

over can possess up to an ounce of cannabis concentrates, though the first pot dispensaries aren’t slated to start opening until January 2018.

Washington, D.C. D.C. voters legalized recreational marijuana in 2014, but it’s tricky: In the city limits, it’s legal to possess up to 2 ounces, but technically you can’t buy or sell it — you have to find someone to “gift” you up to an ounce.

Red Sox players to keep close tabs on during spring training

All eyes will be on Andrew Benintendi, Chris Sale and Pablo Sandoval.

I’ll be harder on myself than [the media] will. I’m not worried about that.”

Pablo Sandoval

MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

Despite all the snow on the ground right now and the feeling that winter isn’t going away anytime soon, the Red Sox will be playing regular season baseball at Fenway Park just 46 days from today. For reference, New Year’s Day was just 46 days ago and that doesn’t seem all that long ago — so we’re getting close to baseball season. It’s difficult to remember a Red Sox season with so much anticipation, as the Sox have the best odds in baseball (along with the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs) to win this year’s title at 9/2 (via Bovada.LV). Before we get to October and before we even get to Opening Day on Yawkey Way, there is plenty of spring training baseball to be played and the shape of the 2017 Red Sox will be molded. Here are three players to keep close tabs on this spring.

Andrew Benintendi Sox fans got a brief glimpse of Benintendi’s potential last season at the Major League level as the 22-year-old outfielder hit .295 with two homers and 14 RBI in 34 games down the stretch. He also had a memorable home run-robbing catch against Tampa Bay in August when he climbed the left field wall at Tropicana Field and pulled back a ball off the bat of the Rays’ Steven Souza. Benintendi was mentioned in trade rumors this past winter, particularly in the minutes before the Sox executed their blockbuster trade with

the White Sox for Chris Sale. Sox boss Dave Dombrowski claims that the Sox were hell-bent on holding onto the young left fielder. “We never came close to trading him in the wintertime,” Dombrowski said this past week. “He’s an all-around player. He can hit, I think he has a beautiful swing and will

hit with some power and drive the ball. I don’t know if he’ll be a big power guy, but he’ll hit with enough power.” Benintendi is set to make up arguably the best b outfield in baseball with w Mookie Betts in i center and Jackie Bradley Jr. J in right.

Chris Sale Sox fans are salivating i at the year Sale could potenc tially have t iin 2017, and for

Chris Sale GETTY IMAGES

good reason. In the past three seasons, Sale posted a sparkling 42-25 win-loss mark and struck out an absurd 715 batters. ESPN Stats and Info published a story this week regarding how the Red Sox’ outstanding defense could lift Sale to even greater heights. In it, ESPN pointed out that Boston was second in the AL in defensive runs saved with 54 last year. The Sox also added the reigning AL Gold Glove winner at first base in Mitch Moreland, so it

should be extremely tough for opposing teams to light up the scoreboard during Sale stars this spring and summer. Of course, there were plenty of glowing remarks regarding David Price a year ago at this time and Price struggled during his first season in Boston. Sale is at least saying all the right things in Fort Myers. “I have very high expectations for myself,” Sale said. “I demand a lot from myself. I don’t think it’ll be anything different.

The Panda Redemption tour is underway in Florida. Sandoval looks like Channing Tatum compared to what he looked like one year ago, but whether or not a good physique translates to hits remains to be seen. It’s been awhile since the 30-year-old Sandoval was a legit threat at the plate. He hasn’t earned an All-Star nod since 2012 and he hasn’t finished a season having batted over .300 since that same year. His RBI totals — which were never all that impressive to begin with — have dipped every season since 2013, going from 79 to 73 to 47 in 2015 (his first year in Boston). As for the starting job at third base, the Red Sox are at least saying that there will be a competition for the spot during spring training. Travis Shaw beat out a beat-up Sandoval in Fort Myers last year, but the Sox wound up trading Shaw this winter. Brock Holt will be the man in charge of pushing Sandoval this spring.

Going into the All-Star break, the Celtics will hold the No. 2 spot in the Eastern Conference standings, with the Raptors floating somewhere between the third and sixth spot. That means Brad Stevens is your East All-Star Team head coach. (By rule, Cavaliers head coach Ty Lue can’t coach the team two years in a row.) This can only be seen as good thing for the Boston Celtics organization. Over three seasons with the Celtics, Stevens has earned the trust and respect of his players, and rarely if ever have you seen any of them show discontent with their leader. Whether it’s in various events leading up to Sunday’s All-Star Game, workouts before it starts, a pregame speech, halftime adjustments or in-game plays, Stevens could have

year’s All-Star weekend. Perhaps he has a few other targets this time around. LeBron James isn’t going anywhere. Neither is Kyrie Irving or Giannis Antetokounmpo. DeMar DeRozan looks pretty set in Toronto, too. But there are superstars in that locker room that for one reason or another may have come up in trade talks already, or could be big free agent targets. Players like Jimmy Butler, Paul George, Paul Millsap and Kyle Lowry all come to mind. JAMES TOSCANO
