RUSSIA: TRUMP DOESN’T WASHINGTON PREPARES TRUMP PICKS MCMASTER FOR N. KOREA TALKS TOP SECURITY ADVISER UNDERSTAND PUTIN

A dossier ordered by the Kremlin on President Donald Trump has called him “naive,” saying the billionaire businessman “doesn’t understand fully” Russian President Vladimir Putin. The report on Trump’s psychological makeup is being prepared for Putin ahead of his first meeting with Trump, the date of which has yet to be announced, NBC News reported. Retired diplo-

mats and members of Putin’s staff are putting together the dossier, which also stated that many members of Russia’s government believe Trump views the presidency as a business. ALEXIS SACHDEV

Preparations are under way to bring senior North Korean officials to the United States for talks with former U.S. officials, the first such meeting in more than five years, The Washington Post reported on Sunday. The talks would be the clearest indication yet that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un wants to communicate with the new Trump administration.

President Donald Trump on Monday named Lt. Gen. Herbert Raymond McMaster as his new national security adviser, again turning to the U.S. military to play a central role on his foreign policy team. McMaster is a highly regarded military tactician and strategic thinker, but his selection surprised some observers who wondered how the officer, who is known for questioning author-

ity, would deal with a White House that has not welcomed criticism. “He is highly respected by everybody in the military and we’re very honored to have him,” Trump told reporters in West Palm Beach where he spent the weekend. “He’s a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience.” REUTERS

TRUMP PROTEST OUTSIDE UK PARLIAMENT Thousands of Donald Trump’s opponents gathered outside the British parliament on Monday to protest against a planned state visit while lawmakers debated whether the new U.S. president should be given a lavish meeting with Queen Elizabeth. Britain invited Trump to visit later this year as Prime Minister Theresa May’s government seeks to reaffirm the so-called “special

Planning for the “Track 1.5 talks” is still in a preparatory stage, the Post reported, citing multiple people with knowledge of the arrangements. relationship” with the United States and secure a trade deal as it prepares to leave the European Union. The planned visit, announced just hours before Trump signed a controversial executive order on immigration, has crystallized opposition in Britain, spurring 1.8 million people to sign a petition saying he should not be afforded the honor of a state visit because it could embarrass the Queen. Yet another nationwide protest against President Donald Trump flared on the Presidents Day holiday Monday, with angry people taking to the streets in dozens of cities in “Not My President’s Day” rallies. Protest leaders had said they expected thousands to rally in about 28 cities ranging from Los Angeles and Chicago to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the latest round of demonstrations to express displeasure with Trump’s policies and pronouncements. In New York, thousands of protesters stretching at least eight blocks chanted, “He cheats, he lies, open up your eyes,” near the Trump International Hotel on the edge of Central Park. GETTY IMAGES

WELCOME TO METRO.US! MATT PRIGGE, NATIONAL FILM EDITOR

Do you have “superhero movie fatigue”? So do we. We find that, however delightful movies like “Ant-Man” or “Doctor Strange” are in spots, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a tangled mess of too many characters, too much plot and little more than lots of stuff happening. With the unusual “Logan” coming out Friday, we look at how the comic book movie trend isn’t going to change for real any time soon.

MIT scientists want your help discovering planets Anyone can explore this online database, which could reveal planets around more than 1,600 stars in outer space. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

It used to be that only astronomers, mathematicians or dedicated amateurs could gaze up into the sky and make a magical discovery. Now, with the help of scientists from MIT and the Carnegie Institute for Science in Washington, anyone with an internet connection can explore space in search of a new planet. The team just unveiled data collected from two decades worth of telescopic observations, which examined more than 1,600 nearby stars. The information, which monitored slight changes of a star’s light

over weeks, months and years, could yield information signaling a gravitational pull from an undiscovered planet on that star, said Dr. Jennifer Burt, a researcher on the project. By looking at these stars, it is possible to identify exoplanets, which orbit stars outside our solar system, she said. MIT has made available the software package needed to view the data and included an online tutorial, so anyone can search for signs of an exoplanet. Burt said there is a learning curve for the general public when it comes to understanding the software, but it’s within reach and she hopes the project will inspire more people to take an interest in astronomy. “Physically what’s happening is, if there’s a planet orbiting around a star, then the gravity of that planet actually tugs on the star,” she said. “If the star is moving toward or away from us, we see the light from the star shift.”

“Our team just isn’t big enough...” Jennifer Burt

RICARDO RAMIREZ

Scientists call this method of tracking periodic backand-forth shifts of light a star’s radial velocity. From the data collected, scientists can then calculate the mass of that planet as well as how far

away it is from the star, which tells you how long its orbit is. Burt is a Torres Postdoctoral Fellow in MIT’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. She began working on this

project while earning her Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is now hoping to get more scientists, and even the general public involved. Call it crowdsourcing the stars. “Our team just isn’t big enough to really take the time and consideration that you want to give this kind of data resource,” she said. “The database and the software that my team uses are both publicly available now, so you can download and play around with the data

yourself.” Because scientists in the field are making discoveries almost monthly, Burt said, the study of exoplanets is exciting and constantly changing. The first confirmation of exoplanets came in the 1990s, though people for years had assumed they existed. “But [scientists] didn’t know how common exoplanets were, or what kind of planets they are,” she said. The radial velocity method is responsible for detecting the first 100 exoplanets scientists discovered, and more methods have been developed since. With all that information, Burt said, scientists think planets may exist around almost every star in outer space. That’s a lot of planets left to discover. Too many for scientists to track by themselves, which is why the new online data could prove a useful tool to possibly speed new discoveries. It is also a way to get a younger generation of aspiring astronomers involved or introduce the field to people who may not have previously taken an interest, she added. “They’re looking at what actual science research looks like,” Bart said. “Anyone can be a scientist. Anyone can look for planets and play with this data.”

You got me, Donald. I confess. I am an enemy of the people — some of the people, that is. I’m an enemy of the ones who think that facts are made of Silly Putty, that insults are a way to make friends, that immigrants make our country weaker, that judges are only “so-called,” that Sweden’s the latest terror tragedy and that Russian’s thuggish Vladimir Putin is a really, really swell guy. Yes, I’m definitely an enemy of them. Like most of us in what Donald Trump relishes in terming the “fake news media,” I’m a call-’em-likeI-see-’em type, someone who will never sit silently and allow a pandering politician to award himself straight A’s. “A well-oiled machine?” More like a demolition derby — and Donald’s blindly driving all the cars. The reason we won’t stay silent is a simple one, and the First Amendment to the Constitution is only part of it. There’s a more practical part: We know how to tell the truth, and he doesn’t. The way things are going one month in, we “enemies of the American people” will never get to rest.

So much happened this weekend, two days wasn’t nearly enough to hold it all. We had to add a third one, which people immediately began calling Not My President’s Day. At rallies across America, in Europe and beyond, people had a much-needed chance to review: The president’s “enemies” crack. The “terrorist” refugees in Sweden. Vice President Mike Pence’s Please-Don’tListen-to-Donald speech at

the NATO summit in Munich. A new general, a better general, in as national security adviser, replacing the Russia-loving Mike Flynn. The giant sigh of relief that über-hawk John Bolton didn’t land that important job, then a gasp when Trump promised to find him another. As with Memorial Day, you couldn’t say Happy Not My President’s Day. This first national holiday

of the Trump administration was something to commemorate more than celebrate. Taken together, the crowds at the antiTrump rallies were far larger than the one that gathered for a Trump campaign pep rally on Saturday in Melbourne, Florida. And with each loud cheer, the “enemies list” grew a few names longer.

Opioid overdoses continue to rise in Massachusetts: Report Opioids claimed a record number of lives in Massachusetts last year, more than tripling what they were a decade ago, and authorities say the powerful synthetic drug fentanyl is to blame. A total of 1,465 people died of unintentional opioid overdoses in 2016, according to the Department of Public Health’s quarterly overdose report released Friday. As data for the final months of the year continues to trickle in, an estimated 469 to 562 more deaths could occur, bringing the death toll to 1,979 and making 2016 the deadliest year yet for opioid overdoses. As drugs have claimed more and more lives in recent years, experts are attributing the exponential rise in overdose deaths to a synthetic opioid called fentanyl, which is often found mixed into

bags of heroin on the streets. Deaths have more than doubled in the past three years. Last year, 1,751 people died over opioid-related overdoses, compared with 1,379 in 2014 and 918 in 2013. Fentanyl is a powerful painkiller that is 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine and heroin, according to the Centers for Disease Control. “The drug is also devastating communities at a local level — just type “fentanyl overdose” into Google to see countless articles related to the struggles of fentanyl users and the impact of the drug on their families and neighborhoods,” said Ayana Lage, of Heroin.net, a recovery resource. “To address this epidemic, the public needs a better understanding of the dangers of fentanyl and the sweeping effects of the drug within the past decade.”

It has increasingly been found in the systems of overdose victims, according to DPH data. So far, fentanyl was present in 75 percent of the toxicology reports of overdose victims in 2016. The medical examiner’s office is still processing cases from the end of the year. Massachusetts is the second hardest hit state in the country after Ohio by the fentanyl epidemic, according to the CDC, and as communities across the state continue to suffer, lawmakers have started to fight back. A landmark 2015 bill took aim at prescription painkillers and overprescribing doctors as well as expanded access to treatment. The number of prescriptions for opioid painkillers dropped 15 percent in the first year, according to DPH. ERIN TIERNAN

Lindsay Lohan would love a role in a live-action ‘Little Mermaid,’ please After scrubbing her Instagram of all photos for no particular reason, Lindsay Lohan is back! And she’s ready for her next role. Lohan posted a selfie next to an image of Ariel from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” that has everyone wondering: Why did she do that, exactly? Lohan has since edited the post, which originally read: “I will sing again, as #ariel #thelittlemermaid [if] @Disney approve that

#billcondon directs it.” She really has a handle on those hashtags, huh? So she wants to star in a liveaction “Little Mermaid” film. Crazier things have happened. You have to admit that the former child actress and the cartoon princess have a strikingly similar look, and actually? A whole lot in common. I mean, Ariel is a hoarder with a short attention span and a variety of questionable friends. And Lindsay Lohan is … herself.

The Wall Street-inspired drama “Billions” kicked off its second season on Sunday on Showtime. The popular series explores the dark side of extreme wealth and pits high-finance heavy-hitter Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis) against U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti). We got to chat with Toby Leonard Moore, who pins down corporate criminals alongside Giamatti’s character as Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan Connerty. Moore tells us what we can expect from the new season, mastering the American accent and why money isn’t everything. So many people dream of having a ton of money, but at a certain point, it can become quite a burden, as “Billions” has shown us. It has to become a burden at a certain point. More money, more problems. It’s that kind of idea. I heard a podcast or read an article or something the other day, I can’t remember a source, but I think someone said, after about $300,000, there’s no difference in happiness. If you have enough money to know that the rent’s going to be paid on time, apparently there’s no change to it. You don’t need that yacht. If you choose to be happy, you’ll be happy. It’s pretty simple. For people who may not have seen the show, tell us about your character.

I play Bryan Connerty, who’s an assistant attorney to Paul Giamatti’s Chuck Rhoades. Assistant attorneys are kind of like real-life superheroes. They spend their lives working 20-hour days for not as much pay as they would get if they worked in the private sector. He’s constantly questioning who’s in the right and who’s in the wrong. I think the audience is doing that as well from week to week. PROVIDED

What’s it like working with Paul Giamatti so closely? A joy, a delight. I loved coming to work. He’s incredibly generous and hysterically funny. Days that I don’t work, though everybody loves a day off work, sometimes I get a little depressed when I don’t get to go to work. I wonder what shenanigans those guys are getting up to today. Every day is like being in a classroom. I’ve learned so much. It’s a real privilege. The trailer for Season 2 is intense. It’s sizzling. What can we expect? I think our show is so intricate and so detailed and it’s such a specific world. Season 1 was great, but there was a lot to establish. So in Season 2, what you’re going to see is all of the things set up, pay off. It’s really exciting. “Billions” airs Sunday nights on Showtime. JENNIFER LOGUE

Dita Von Teese is the queen of neo-burlesque. The 44-year-old from Michigan, born Heather Sweet, has published thrice, walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier and launched an eponymous lingerie line. And then there’s her world-famous strip show — made with old-Hollywood glamour, designer wardrobes and sparkling champagne coupes ready for swimming. And yet Von Teese remains an enigma for some feminists, who wonder if her art of the high-end striptease is truly liberating or dressed-up degradation. Still it’s young women who often pack Von Teese’s shows, many emulating her signature retro look and espousing the virtues of the perfect red pout. The “Your Beauty Mark author is used to these lingering questions about the message she aims to

relay to her female fans, and her answer is short: She’s always in control. “I always want burlesque to be a total-control situation, she explains. “I like to exhibit that confidence, and highlight my control of the situation. I want it to be about me and the audience. The vulnerability and generosity are what make the show good. Von Teese will showcase her latest act, “The Art of the Teese — featuring new and reimagined vignettes from her illustrious career — with a performance at the House of Blues Boston tonight. And from costume development to casting to the lighting direction, Von Teese is a meticulous and thoughtful producer. Her wardrobe is commissioned from the likes of Zuhair Murad, Catherine d’Lish, Christian Louboutin and Kate Middleton favorite, Jenny

Her hair and makeup are always self-done, but that may come as no surprise, as she literally wrote a book on it. For “The Art of the Teese, she’ll bring a troupe of male performers, dubbed the Vontourage. It’s a first for Von Teese, who has historically cast her shows with women. “It’s a big risk, she admits. “I love having stage kittens, beautiful women everywhere. But I’m a 44-year-old woman. Biggest trends from NYFW

Here’s what you’ll be wearing next fall. TINA CHADHA @TinaatMetro

Inclusivity dominated New York Fashion Week. Designers (finally) cast diverse lineups that reflected real women, meaning models of

various ethnicities, sizes and ages walked the runway. Responding to our tense political times, the fashion set also used the spotlight to make political statements galore. There were slogan T-shirts at Prabal Gurung and Christian Siriano, pink pins supporting Planned Parenthood, a moving speech by

the co-chairs of the Women’s March at Mara Hoffman and a clever reimagining of Trump’s MAGA cap at Public School (the designers’ version read “Make America New York”). And amidst the powerful messages, we saw strong collections for fall. Here are the top trends.

Go beyond your ’90s-inspired flannel. Checks, tartan and ginghams were everywhere, and the best looks came head-to-toe in the season’s “It” print.

Getting ready for a night on the town is going to be anything but basic with designers embellishing skirts and dresses with swinging fringe and opulent feathers.

Hold tight to the velvet pieces you invested in last season. The plush fabric was a designer favorite for fall. “Velvet feels so bold and luxurious,” says Rebecca Taylor. “I particularly love printing on velvet. The floral printed velvet jumpsuit we did has an almost optical effect, which feels modern and feminine.”

Designers like Raf Simons (for his lauded debut at Calvin Klein) paid homage to the country’s sartorial history. Some of their favorites style cues: Western shirts, varsity elements, prairie dresses and, of course, cool denim.

Call it the Hillary Clinton effect — both tailored and billowing pantsuits owned the runway. The future is still female.

cal Association reporting more than half of Americans were experiencing election-induced anxiety in the days leading up to Nov. 8. You could call our current plight “postinauguration stress — but four years of mass high anxiety is not sustainable. Maryland therapist Steven Stosny, who coined the term “election stress disorder, now refers to our nation’s affliction as “headline stress disorder. “For many people, continual alerts from news sources, blogs, social media and alternative facts feel like missile explosions in a siege without end, Stosny writes in the Washington Post. Dr. Ellen Slawsby, an assistant clinical professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School, agrees that the nonstop exposure to the news cycle is overwhelming. “There’s so much news coming in, the brain and the body can’t handle it, she says. “If you just let it all flow in like a wild ocean tide, you’re going to drown. Limit your news intake Slawsby, also the director of chronic pain services at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, says that in patient sessions, “the election has come up much more than I’ve ever seen in my 25 years in practice. She urges her patients, who are seeing symptoms of chronic illness

exacerbated by political anxieties, to regulate how much news they consume. While many of us constantly scroll Twitter or set push notifications on our phones — with the exception of folks who work in breaking news media — that’s a choice that we’re making, she says. She recommends setting aside a time to read the news; maybe 20 minutes in the morning, or 20 minutes at the end of the day, to stay informed, but not overwhelmed. Prioritize health and selfcare Dr. Danielle Ofri, an internist at Bellevue Hospital, says that although she’s a primary care physician, she ends up devoting time in her appointments to discuss her patients’ anxieties about the current administration. At Bellevue, many of her patients are immigrants, she says, who are concerned about what their future looks like under Trump. “In our visits, diabetes and heart disease are pushed aside as we use our medical time to address the fear that has infiltrated their lives, Ofri, the author of “What Patients Say, What Doctors Hear, wrote in a recent article for Slate, entitled “Should Doctors Treat Trump Anxiety? Ofri says she encourages them to focus on taking care of their mental and physical health, despite looming uncertainty. “Does it seem crazy to exercise when you could be deported next week? On the one hand, yes, she says. “On the other hand, if you have

high blood pressure and exercise helps to keep that from spiraling out of control and having even more devastating effects ‌ [I tell them] to focus on that.â€? Develop a relaxation response “The key is remembering that stress is a perception of a threat, and a perception that we can’t cope with it,â€? says Slawsby. “Most things we actually can cope with. We are very resilient as human beings.â€? To harness that inner resiliency, she urges her patients to engage in a daily, 20 minute “relaxation responseâ€? — anything from meditation to deep breathing to exercise. These activities decrease the body’s production of stress hormones while releasing endorphins, helping us find balance and strength in our day to day. Find your community “Social support is key; finding individuals you can talk with about your stress,â€? says Slawsby. For many, seeking out activism efforts and connecting with groups that are organizing protests or writing letters to congressmen can help exchange a sense of hopelessness and despair for one of mutual direction and agency, says Slawsby. Learning to re-examine negative, grandiose thought patterns is also essential for stamina. “The idea that we’re never going to be happy or safe again — we can reframe that thought: This is a very challenging time for this country, but the country has always come through,â€? she says.

Finding ways to relax daily is essential to mental health stamina.

Why women outperform men at work Being a women in the workplace may actually be your biggest advantage, thanks to these three traits. SARA FEINSTEIN @SaraBFeinstein

sara.feinstein@metro.us

Have a job opening? You should hire a woman — she might actually perform better. There are studies to prove it. Research shows that women possess a group of traits that actually make them better investors, decision makers and overall leaders, explains Sallie Krawcheck, CEO of Ellevest, a digital investment platform that aims to make more women financial players. While many women fear their gender may be a liability in the job market, the truth is, it’s actually an asset. We spoke with Krawcheck about how women can take their careers to the next level by playing with a new set of rules that build on their own natural strengths.

A healthy dose of risk awareness If the stock market crash

of 2008 — an event spurred by the excessive risk taking by the group of men who dominated Wall Street — isn’t a strong enough example, there are numerous studies that show that women are inherently more cautious than men, says Krawcheck. It’s why women tend to be better investors than men, and why companies with female CFOs are less likely to make value-destroying purchases, she explains, because they make sure to fully flesh out all positions and discuss the potential downsides before making a final decision. A women might say, “Let’s not do that acquisition because it’s in another country where we have no experience. Let’s think through that risk, rather than, ‘Hey– let’s go.’ So what can women’s risk awareness offer to businesses? More transparency, better decision making and, overall, fewer mistakes, says Krawcheck.

Ability to see the big picture While men tend to make quicker decisions on average, women make slower, but more

effective decisions, says Krawcheck. She uses an analogy of the husband and wife at a restaurant: The man orders immediately upon first glance of the menu, while the woman studies the page like an aspiring lawyer preparing for the bar exam. But that’s only because she’s juggling the complexity of her options, weighing pros and cons so she can make the best overall choice. And while it may be characterized as “slowness, this holistic view is now more valuable than ever, she explains. “Whereas information was scarce historically, information is abundant today, and so taking into account more factors when making decisions and keeping up with complexity are a value in the changing workplace.

Strong relationship focus Anecdotal evidence aside, there is plenty of research to back up the claim that women are more empathetic, better connectors and natural relationship builders: all skills that matter enormously for success in the workplace, says Krawcheck. After all,

“while there are certainly processes and procedures in place, at the end of the day, relationships are what get things done, she explains. As technological change continues to accelerate and more jobs become threatened by automation, this is one of the qualities that can’t be outsourced, she adds. The advantage of information is slowly fad-

ing. “It used to be, ‘I’m really bad with people, but I have all the data, says Krawcheck. “Except now everybody has all the data and so now you’re just bad with people. In the end, this relationship focus not only allows for greater engagement, she explains, but in turn, also improves profitability, productivity, quality and customer loyalty.

Pats with big decisions ahead Will the Patriots deal Jimmy Garoppolo? JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us

There’s a good chance your Super Bowl LI hangover hasn’t yet worn off, and we know there are more than a few Patriots still celebrating the historic win. But head coach Bill Belichick is already on to the offseason, telling reporters shortly after the team became Super Bowl champs that “we’re five weeks behind in the 2017 season to most teams in the league.” So Bill Belichick, it hurts. But the man does have a point. The Pats have never rested on their laurels in the past — which is why they’ve won five Super Bowls since 2002 — and they have plenty of questions to answer this offseason if they want to successfully defend their Super Bowl title. And the gears were turning before this point. The Patriots traded away both Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins dating back to last offseason, fully aware they wouldn’t be able

to re-sign them with so many other key players hitting free agency. Clearly, those gambles paid off, as the Patriots were able to plug in replacements and get the job done. Their next decisions won’t be any easier.

1Goodbye, Jimmy G?

Apparently media members can’t wait to write the Brady retirement column. We’re constantly reminded that, at age 39, he could retire soon (despite the fact he’s said on numerous occasions he isn’t thinking about retirement). But folks, if the 2016-17 season is any indication, Brady could play until he’s 50. Now we’re hearing reports the Pats are going to work on yet another extension with the G.O.A.T. So … what does that mean for Jimmy Garoppolo? Well, he’s got to be on his way out. It turns out this won’t be a Brett Favre-Aaron Rodgers situation after all. Though Garoppolo has seen limited action in his three seasons with the Patriots, he’s shown enough to garner attention from QB-needy teams. Where he ends

up is still up in the air, but Cleveland, Chicago, and San Francisco remain top options. The Patriots have done business with both the Bears and Browns as recently as this season, so there is a relationship there. Expect a firstrounder and perhaps a mid-round pick for Garoppolo, who the Patriots drafted in the second round back in 2014.

money for 2Big big free agents

Two players who made huge plays for the Patriots in each of their last two Super Bowls as well as numerous times throughout the last few seasons are going to be free agents soon: Malcolm Butler and Dont’a Hightower. It would be a surprise if both were not re-signed by the Patriots this offseason — to big deals, too. Shutdown corners make lots of money in this league, and that is exactly what Butler has become, as he’ll earn a yearly salary averaging eight figures. The same goes for Hightower, who has become a leader on defense and someone in the middle the Patriots can count on as they shuffle linebackers

Jimmy Garoppolo no doubt wants to be an NFL starter this coming season. GETTY IMAGES

in and out of the game around him. But if the Pats lock those two up, it’s unlikely they’ll have enough money for Logan Ryan, who’s play could earn him an annual salary just south of $10 million. And what’s to happen with the defensive line and their free agents? Jabaal Sheard was in and out of Belichick’s good graces this season and Chris Long took a very team-friendly one-year deal. Alan Branch was an integral part of the line as well, but at age 32 is getting up there.

Gronk 3Bennett, ... or both? When it comes to seasonsaving decisions, the trade for Martellus Bennett before the season began ends up being just that. For a few seasons, the Patriots looked for their Aaron Hernandez replacement in the two tight end set, and finally found it in Bennett (though the Pats couldn’t utilize it much). They also got much needed insurance for if (when) Gronkowski got hurt. Bennett was not only a big target for Brady but a big blocker

as well. The fact that the Pats won the Super Bowl without Gronkowski is big news. Gronk is only making $4.25 million next season, so the Pats should be more inclined to keep him around. But that jumps to $8 million in 2018 and $9 million in 2019 – still a good deal for an all-time-great tight end, but only if he stays on the field. Would they be willing to fork over another $8 million or so annually for the soon-to-be 31-year-old Bennett? Or is there a less expensive guy they’re targeting?

Rumor week is here, will C’s make a splash? Danny Ainge will surely give the Bulls a ring this week. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

DeMarcus Cousins had long been linked to the Celtics in trade rumors, but the C’s seemingly weren’t willing to bite the Boogie bullet this week as Cousins was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans Sunday night. It would seem that if the Celtics really wanted Cousins they could have gotten him as New Orleans did not own the amount of quality assets that the C’s currently possess prior to the deal. The Pelicans gave up Buddy Hield (the sixth overall pick in last June’s draft who is averaging 8.6 points per game in his rookie year), Tyreke Evans, Langston Gallo-

way, a 2017 first-round pick (top-three protected) and a 2017 second-round pick. The Celtics have this year’s Nets pick to dangle as well as next year’s Nets pick and can offer quality young players like Marcus Smart and/or Jaylen Brown in a potential deal. Celtics boss Danny Ainge surely must have felt that Cousins wasn’t worth that level of haul, but now the question remains as to whether or not Ainge feels any AllStar level player on the trade block (Chicago’s Jimmy Butler, Indiana’s Paul George, New York’s Carmelo Anthony) is worth that price. Butler, George and Anthony are fine players, but it remains to be seen if any of them are on the franchise-altering level of a Kevin Garnett — a player Ainge gave up for five players (one of which was Al Jefferson — thought of as a potential All-Star at the time) and

two first-round picks. As of now, the player the Celtics seem most keen on is Butler. “The potential of a Boston, Chicago deal for Jimmy Butler would loom over the entire week (ahead of the trade

deadline), The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski said. “These teams have engaged on the potential of this trade, they have not gotten far down the road on it. There still needs to be an alignment within the Bulls organiza-

tion from ownership to management that they will want to make the decision to enter a full rebuild. “The fact that the Celtics swap with Brooklyn this year, they have their pick which could poten-

tially be a top-three pick and they have Brooklyn’s pick outright next year. Either one of those picks, I don’t think Chicago can get both of them, that’s just the beginning point of a deal for the Bulls for Jimmy Butler. To get a true feel of what the Celtics would need to give up for Butler, you have to go back to last summer when the Bulls wanted specific players and one of — if not two of the Nets picks. Chicago wanted Jae Crowder and Marcus Smart specifically back then, but one would think that the Bulls wouldn’t demand Crowder now given that the small forward is a “win-now type piece. Last summer, Chicago still had ideas that it could rebuild on the fly but management finally seems to be coming around to the thought that the best path to long-term success is to bottom out.
