Sweden hit back at criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, defending its generous immigration policies and saying the diversity from thousands of asylum seekers would build a stronger society. Sweden’s image as a safe and stable society has come under close scrutiny in recent days after Trump appeared to refer to an attack there that had not happened and then
tweeted that generous immigration policies were not working. “The next time I hope the president, if he’s going to speak about Sweden, is better informed about what the conditions really are here,” Swedish Justice and Migration Minister Morgan Johansson told Reuters in an interview. REUTERS

Donald Trump said he wants to build up the U.S. nuclear arsenal to ensure it is at the “top of the pack,” saying the United States has fallen behind in its atomic weapons capacity. Trump also complained about Russian deployment of a cruise missile in violation of an arms control treaty and said he would raise the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin when and if they meet.
On another front, Trump said China could solve the national security challenge posed by North Korea “very easily if they want to,” ratcheting up pressure on Beijing to exert more influence to rein in Pyongyang’s increasingly bellicose actions. Speaking from behind his desk in the Oval Office, Trump also declared himself “very angry” at North Korea’s ballistic missile tests. REUTERS

$435M POWERBALL TICKET SOLD IN INDIANA

A Powerball ticket sold in Indiana matched the winning numbers of a drawing on Wednesday for the game’s $435 million jackpot, one of the largest in the lottery’s history. The numbers drawn were 52, 10, 61, 28, and 13. The Powerball was 2. The winning ticket in Indiana is worth $435 million, the seventh-largest jackpot in the game’s history, according to the lottery’s website. Before
Wednesday, the last time a winning ticket in the jackpot was sold was on Dec. 17. The odds of winning the jackpot were 1 in 292,201,338. Powerball’s jackpot swelled to a record $1.6 billion in January 2016, when three winning tickets were sold in Florida, California, and Tennessee. The game and a second major U.S. lottery, Mega Millions, have exceeded $400 million only a few other times. REUTERS

President Donald Trump spoke favorably about a potentially exportboosting border adjustment tax being pushed by Republicans in the U.S. Congress, but did not specifically endorse it. Trump, who has lashed out at U.S. companies who have moved operations to countries like Mexico, has previously sent mixed signals on the proposal at the heart of a Republican
plan to overhaul the tax code for the first time in more than 30 years. “It could lead to a lot more jobs in the United States,” Trump told Reuters in an interview, using his most positive language to date on the proposal.

If you turn to our WKND section, you’ll see six predictions for who and what will win Oscars on Sunday. You can also go to metro.us/movie, where we did the same for all of the other nominees. It’s a great way to help with your Oscar pools. We’ll still have more online coverage on the day itself, including the best (and worst) dressed, reports on who won and the most inspiring (or angry) antiTrump speeches.
CORRECTION In Thursday’s edition, Metro incorrectly reported that Kari Hong, an immigration lawyer, estimated that the Department of Homeland Security’s plan to hire 15,000 border patrol agents and ICE officers would cost at least $50 million in salaries alone. Ms. Hong actually estimated the cost would be at least $750 million.

Sheriffs sign on to Trump’s tougher immigration, deportation plan Bristol, Plymouth sheriffs on forefront of local partnerships “critical to Trump’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants. ERIN TIERNAN @erintiernan
erin.tiernan@metro.us
Two county sheriffs are among the leading advocates in Massachusetts of the Trump administration’s efforts to ramp up deportations of undocumented immigrants. Under a federal partnership, the sheriff’s departments in Bristol and Plymouth counties are getting trained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to apprehend, detain and assist with the deportation of illegal immigrants who are being held in
their jails. It’s a program that was created 20 years ago and which President Donald Trump wants to expand. Enlisting local police, he has said, will cast a wider net as his administration follows through on promises to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. “The president said our role is probably the most critical because we know the players in our communities and we know how to find them, Bristol County Sheriff Tom Hodgson said. Earlier this month, Hodgson, a Republican, met with the president and other sheriffs from around the country to strengthen partnerships between federal and local law enforcement agencies with the goal of getting undocument-
ed immigrants off the streets. Plymouth County Sheriff Joe McDonald, a Republican who has held the position since 2005, has also signed on. Opponents say it isn’t fair for state resources to be used to enforce federal laws and that it opens the state up to liability of Fourth Amendment violations for reasonable search and seizure. Another concern is that the enforcement effort will make undocumented immigrants afraid to call the police when they need help. “This is about ripping apart people’s families, said Carl Williams, staff lawyer at ACLU Massachusetts. Williams challenged the Trump administration’s classification of “criminal illegal aliens, saying politicians were using strong language to make people more com-

Oscar predictions: Who will win, who will lose BEST PICTURE
What will win: “La La Land” What should win: “Moonlight”
wknd
The one category that seems like a lock is this one: The movie with the most nominations will (probably, almost certainly) claim the top prize. Some say “Moonlight” offers stiff competition, but it only has eight noms — almost half of “La La Land’s” haul. So, sorry, you beautiful, devastating yet ultimately hopeful look at a poor, black, gay kid: You’ll almost certainly lose to the happy (but, honestly, not that happy) musical. But you shouldn’t, and not only because you offer a timely message about empathy. You’re even better than timely. You’re a work of original, deeply felt art.
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone bust a move in “La La Land.” DALE ROBINETTE
Oscar predicting is bulls—. It’s a science the way astrology is a science, which is to say it’s not one. But we can certainly make wild assumptions! If you need a leg-up on your Oscar pool, we’ve made some semieducated guesses. But we’ll do you one better: We’ve also included who we’d vote for if we were a member of the Academy — you know, in case you were wondering. MATT PRIGGE BEST ACTRESS
DALE ROBINETTE
Who will win: Emma Stone, “La La Land” Who should win: Isabelle Huppert, “Elle” Isabelle Huppert has been winning every award she’s qualified for, and rightly so. As a woman who deals very unusually, to put it mildly, with the aftermath of a sexual assault, she’s absolutely thrilling: by turns coiled and disarmingly playful. But these are the Oscars. They’ll probably go with the person Americans actually know, not France’s mightiest ice queen. But at least Huppert will snap some more adorable pictures for her unexpectedly cute Instagram feed.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
BEST ACTOR
Who will win: Casey Affleck, “Manchester by the Sea” Who should win: Casey Affleck, “Manchester by the Sea” We’ll just say that Casey Affleck is a brilliant actor and has been forever, and his turn as a man who can’t articulate or deal with his bottomless guilt is second only to Huppert in “Elle.”
CLAIRE FOGLER
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
BEST DIRECTOR
Who will win: Dev Patel, “Lion” Who should win: Mahershala Ali, “Moonlight”
PARAMOUNT PICTURES
Who will win: Viola Davis, “Fences” Who should win: Viola Davis, “Fences” Some have argued that Davis’ turn in “Fences” should be considered a leading role. We’re not so sure; the movie does push her into the limelight in the home stretch, but even after Denzel Washington’s hellion of a former baseballer goes AWOL, it’s still really about him. His absence is as strong as his presence. But whatever: She’s nominated here, and she’s head and shoulders above the other nominees — even Octavia Spencer doing a master class in patience-as-strength in “Hidden Figures.”
We’ve spotted a couple “Will Dev Patel win an Oscar???” posts as we scrolled madly through Twitter en route to grim news stories. So we’ll bite: Maybe he will win for “Lion,” in which he mostly looks ashen and emotionally remote (but has great hair). We do worry that the death march of this awards season has made people forget how incredible Mahershala Ali is in “Moonlight,” though. We can’t get his performance out of our heads: How he defies the expectations of his character, how he makes him a decent man who could still deal drugs, the way he deflates in his two final scenes. But who knows? At least Aaron Taylor-Johnson isn’t here to weirdly steal his thunder, as he was at the Globes.
MARK ROGERS
GETTY IMAGES
Who will win: Damien Chazelle, “La La Land” Who should win: Barry Jenkins, “Moonlight” Damien Chazelle (pictured) is the new golden boy of Hollywood. But if “La La Land” must win Best Picture, can Barry Jenkins please go home with Best Director? Often the two awards are seen as one, but the Oscars have split them before, including last year. (“Spotlight” won Picture, but Director went to “The Revenant’s” Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, again.) Jenkins winning would be a helluva success story, too: a filmmaker who couldn’t get a second feature off the ground for nine years, who makes history as the first black filmmaker to win the trophy (and the fourth ever nominated). Also, there’s the pesky notion that Jenkins deserves to win.

Quintessential Kubrick The annual retrospective revisits the director’s classics on the big screen. SEAN M BURNS @SeanMBurns letters@metro.us
The Museum of Fine Arts’ annual Stanley Kubrick retrospective runs for so long and has become such a Boston repertory film tradition it sometimes feels like it’s always going on, or as creepy Delbert Grady says to Jack Torrance in “The Shining” — Saturday’s closing night film — “you’ve always been the caretaker.” But Kubrick films are much better appreciated on the big screen, where their trancelike pacing and mesmerizing languors aren’t disturbed by distractions at home. These are also movies that benefit enormously from repeat viewings, as most were misunder-
stood by critics and audiences on initial release, and only gained classic stature over time. (Fun trivia: “The Shining” received Razzie nominations for Worst Director and Shelly Duvall as Worst Actress. Aren’t the Razzies awful?) Friday night’s “Eyes Wide Shut” mystified multiplexes in 1999 after a teasing, yearslong publicity campaign promised The World’s Biggest Movie Star™ and his wife getting hot and heavy in a top-secret sex thriller f r o m T h e Wo r l d ’ s Greatest Filmmaker™. Instead, the picture turned out to be a delicious, deadpan farce about the fragile masculine ego, cast-
ing Tom Cruise hilariously against type as a buttoned-up doctor who feels cuckolded by his wife’s imagination and dashes out into the New York City night, determined to cheat on her. Yet despite nearly the entire supporting cast (from Leelee Sobieski to Alan Cumming) all throwing themselves at the hunky M.D., cloddish Cruise bungles every opportunity and somehow even manages to strike o u t at an o r g y. Saturday afternoon’s “Barry Lyndon” plays similar games with Ryan O’Neal’s star persona, while Kubrick undercuts the white-hot passions audiences expected from a romantic period piece with a brutally pessimistic chill. The film’s oft-repeated signature shot zooms out and away from the characters as they shrink into artfully arranged backdrops,
consigned to their futile roles in a story the sardonic narrator himself spoils long before the movie’s ending. “Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” also screens on Saturday afternoon and, thanks to current events, Kubrick’s wiseacre take on runaway phallic symbols and madmen fighting in the war room to preserve precious bodily

Now We Cater There’s plenty more adorbs cat action where this came from in the Turkish doc “Kedi, which opens today at Kendall Square Cinema, 355 Binney St., Cambridge. OSCILLOSCOPE LABORATORIES
Every now and then, the political columnist Ana Marie Cox oods her Twitter feed with cute pet photos. Sometimes it’s because the world suddenly got awful. Other times it’s just ’cause. The doc “Kedi,â€? about stray cats skulking about Istanbul, is an Ana Marie Cox pet deluge in cinematic form. It’s an 80-minute dopamine rush for those who need it. It has perfect timing, too: Experts (to those who still listen to them)
advise against freebasing 24/7 on panic. Time-sucks are no longer caked in guilt; they’re necessary for mental stability, long as we don’t disappear permanently into an oblivion of obliviousness. In “Kediâ€? — which is, in fact, the Turkish word for “catâ€? — they sleep on roofs, they perch on motorcycles, they play in beds of soil. There are catďŹ ghts and meow-os. A manx and a tabby are seen curled up together in slumber,

Honestly, if this was all there was to “Kedi,â€? that would be ďŹ ne. But there is more to it. It’s part cat gawk session and part city symphony. It never addresses the dark times that have descended upon Turkey. But that doesn’t feel like a dodge; it’s more like an act of
deďŹ ance. It presents Istanbul as rich with life — people who keep on keepin’ on, forming communities between not only fellow humans but their animal neighbors. And, of course, there are cats. NETS’ DRAFT PICK TURNING INTO AINGE’S WORST ENEMY OPINION
DANNY PICARD @dannypicard
He might not know it, but the “Brooklyn pick” is Danny Ainge’s own worst enemy. Everyone wants it. And the Celtics’ president of basketball operations seemingly won’t give it up. That’s why the Celtics made no moves before Thursday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline. We all saw the names in the rumor mill. I’ll give you a few who I wanted Ainge to trade for: Jimmy Butler or Paul George. Turns out, the biggest deal went down last weekend, when the Sacramento Kings sent DeMarcus Cousins to

good thing for the Celtics. Turns out, it worked against Ainge at the trade deadline. That is, if you believe there was actually a trade to be made before Thursday at 3 p.m. And there had to have been. Which brings me back to my theory: The Brooklyn pick — in 2017 — is Ainge’s own worst enemy. It’s projected to be the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft. So don’t tell me it has
no trade value. That pick alone has more value than anything New Orleans gave up to get Cousins, who is one of the NBA’s most dominant young players. Ainge probably saw that trade and thought, there’s no way anyone can ask for the Brooklyn pick now. In a way, even I figured — originally — that the Cousins trade had set the market. If you were going to trade an All-Star caliber player in his mid-to-late 20s, you couldn’t possibly ask for a king’s ransom anymore. On top of that, there isn’t a general manager in the league who would be doing his job if he didn’t try to get the Brooklyn pick from the Celtics in a deadline deal. And every GM knows what the Celtics need. Those who have that one All-Star player to give up, they’re going to ask for the Brooklyn pick, even if that player isn’t worthy of it in a trade. As long as Ainge has the Brooklyn pick, and as long as everyone knows the Celtics are looking to make a trade to improve their team, it’s going to be the starting point for other GMs in a negotiation. I
assume that has led to many brutal trade offers coming from other clubs in recent days — to the point where Ainge must get pissed off. It’s human nature. And if you keep getting low-balled — especially right after the Cousins trade — there comes a time where pride takes over. It’s safe to say that Ainge is pretty damn good at what he does. It’s also safe to say that he knows it. He doesn’t want to get fleeced. Which is why maybe, just maybe, he’s putting a little too much value on the Brooklyn pick when it comes to realistic trade talks with teams like Chicago and Indiana. We’re never really going to know why Butler or George aren’t wearing Green on Friday night in Toronto. But I have a hunch: Ainge just doesn’t want to part ways with the Brooklyn pick. And if so, it’s turning out to be his own worst enemy. Listen to “The Danny Picard Show” at dannypicard.com, iTunes, and Google Play. Danny can also be heard weekends on WEEI 93.7 FM.
