PENCE: TRUMP TRAVEL ORDER COMING IN DAYS

BALTIMORE COPS BUSTED CONWAY ‘INADVERTENTLY’ ON RACKETEERING PLUGGED PRODUCTS

President Donald Trump plans to finalize a new order limiting travel to the United States in the coming days, his vice president said on Wednesday, after federal courts blocked the administration’s earlier travel ban. A White House source had previously said the new order was likely to be announced on Wednesday. More than two dozen lawsuits were filed in U.S. courts against

the Jan. 27 travel ban, which temporarily barred entry to the United States for people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, as well as halting the U.S. refugee program. REUTERS

Seven Baltimore police officers were arrested on Wednesday on federal racketeering charges for robbing and extorting up to $200,000 from victims, along with stealing guns and drugs, prosecutors said. Many of the alleged shakedowns took place while the Baltimore Police Department was under intense media scrutiny and facing a U.S. Justice Department civil rights investigation for

the 2015 police-involved death of a black man that plunged the largely African-American city into turmoil. A grand jury last week indicted six detectives and a sergeant on charges of extorting money and robbing residents, filing false court paperwork and making false overtime claims, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Maryland said. The indictment was unsealed on Wednesday. REUTERS

The White House told a government watchdog agency that Kellyanne Conway acted “inadvertently” when she publicly endorsed the clothing and jewelry line of Ivanka Trump, according to a letter the administration released. Conway came under criticism last month when she said on television that Americans should “go buy Ivanka’s stuff,” in comments that appeared to violate government

ethics rules prohibiting the use of public office to endorse products or advance personal business gains. In a letter to a government ethics watchdog agency, White House Deputy Counsel Stefan Passantino said he met with Conway after her comments and that she committed to follow the rules in the future. SNAP’S $3.4 BILLION IPO TOPS EXPECTATIONS

4

Snap Inc. priced its initial public offering above its target range on Wednesday, raising $3.4 billion as investors set aside concerns about its lack of profits and voting rights for a piece of the hottest tech IPO in years. At $17 a share, the parent of popular disappearingmessaging app Snapchat has a market valuation of roughly $24 billion, more than double the size of rival Twitter and the rich-

est valuation in a U.S. tech IPO since Facebook in 2012. The company had targeted a valuation of between $19.5 billion and $22.3 billion. The book was more than 10 times oversubscribed and Snap could have priced the IPO at as much as $19 a share, but the company wanted to focus on securing mutual funds as longterm investors rather than hedge funds looking to quickly sell, the source said. it. Imagine when you walk into work in the morning, rather than swipe a key card, facial recognition software instantly identifies you and unlocks the door. Or, if instead of making a purchase with your credit card or smartphone, you simply pay with your face. That innovation isn’t so far off, and is among the “10 Breakthrough Technologiesâ€? for 2017 recently featured on an annual list by MIT Technology Review, a magazine published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Facial recognition software isn’t new, but its increasing level of accuracy is beginning to open up the possibilities for a wider audience, and a more practical use. That’s thanks in part to developments and advancements in artificial intelligence. The new technology, which the magazine dubbed “pay with your face,â€? is now being tested and further developed in China. Multiple companies there are working on facial recognition abilities, including Baidu, the firm that runs the country’s most popular search engine. The idea of a face scan being so accurate it can substitute for tickets

or credit cards is still in the early stages of development, said Brian Bergstein, the magazine’s editor-at-large. â€œBut it’s very sci-fi,â€? he said. “It’s the kind of thing that makes you feel like the future is coming quickly.â€? In China, Baidu’s research shows that their software rivals most humans in its ability to recognize a face, wrote Will Knight in the MIT Technology Review article. “Now Baidu is developing a system that lets people pick up rail tickets by showing their face.â€? The technology is so sophisticated — and may be so intrusive — that consumers in the U.S. could be skeptical about adopting it, Bergstein said. “In China, there are incredible amounts of surveillance cameras,â€? he said. Pay with your face technology is “layering convenience applications over the surveillance state.â€? “I don’t know how much acceptance that would have here, and maybe it’s a technology we should be uncomfortable with,â€? he added. The MIT Technology Review highlights the world’s top emerging technologies annually. Some of the other breakthroughs identified include self-driving trucks, computers that can learn on their own and implants in the brain that could help a paralyzed person walk again. “These are going to shape the kinds of companies that get formed and the ideas that get funded,â€? Bergstein said.

“It’s the kind of thing that makes you feel like the future is coming quickly. Brian Bergstein

What are the busiest spots for bicycle traffic in Boston? The city sought to answer that question and on Tuesday released a list based on data from the Boston Transportation Department’s first automated bike count in September. The Massachusetts Avenue Bridge, near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Beacon Street, saw the highest average with about 3,081 bikes passing through that area each day. In the past, volunteers conducted the department’s annual bike counts by visiting locations throughout the city in person during peak morning and afternoon commute times.Â

Fully automated count systems were first installed at 24 areas in June 2016. In September, the city expanded the program to 60 locations across Boston, which monitored bicycle traffic for up to 72 hours at each spot. “Automated counts allow us to capture bike trips taken throughout the day and in all kinds of weather,â€? Stefanie Seskin, BTD’s active transportation director, said in a statement. “This better reflects where people are riding today and will help

us to understand where they’ll ride in the future.â€? Across all 60 locations, the city counted an average of nearly 30,000 bike trips per day in September. In some spots, bikes accounted for more than 15 percent of all vehicles at peak commute hours. â€œBicycling is a healthy and low-cost form of transportation and we are pleased that so many people are choosing bikes to get around the City,â€? Boston Transportation Commissioner Gina N. Fiandaca said in a statement.

Oprah for president? Oprah Winfrey — who is, honestly, the person America needs most right now — might be considering a presidential run. Oh. My. Goddess. In an interview with Bloomberg’s David Rubenstein, Winfrey, 63, chatted about her legacy and how great she is, because you guys? This woman is really great. Then, Rubenstein, sly fox that he is, suggested that Winfrey may be able to break the

glass ceiling by running for president. And Winfrey, as coy as ever, didn’t say yes — but to be completely fair, she didn’t say no, either. “I never considered the question even a possibility. I thought, Oh gee, I don’t have the experience, I don’t know enough. Now I’m thinking … oh!” I’ll take that as a yes, thank you very much.

Why is Brad Pitt bothering Jennifer Aniston? Now that the bonds of Brangelina have been broken, Brad Pitt is searching for a familiar sort of comfort in the lean, tanned bosom of his ex-wife. That’s right, I’m talking about Jennifer Aniston. According to Us Weekly, the 53-year old has been texting his ex, and I can’t even. Apparently, Pitt no longer had Aniston’s digits, and went through the laborious effort of tracking them down just so he could wish her a happy birthday. They’ve been talking ever since.

GOSSIP

Pitt and Aniston, 48, were married for five years before they divorced. Pitt famously shacked up with Angelina Jolie immediately after and Aniston married Justin Theroux in 2015. I have one simple request, and it is this: Please don’t put us through this again, Brad. Don’t put Jennifer Aniston through this again. Remember that rude W Magazine photo shoot you did right after divorcing her? She might not still be mad about it, but we are.

Perry and Bloom call it quits Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are one-upping Gwyneth’s “conscious uncoupling:” They’re taking a “respectful, loving space” from their relationship. Their reps confirmed as much in a statement to People,“before rumors or falsifications get out of hand.” Mmhm. Perry, 32, and Bloom, 40, were seen together as recently as Sunday for the annual Vanity Fair Oscars party, because neither of them can resist a photo op. The two dated for about a year, and in that

year, they were committed to doing the most. There was that time they went paddle boarding with a special appearance from Bloom’s penis. And for Halloween, they pulled the ultimate couple’s costume, with Perry as Hillary and Bloom as Donald, because America hadn’t been traumatized enough by the presidential race at that point, I guess. Bloom, who is an actor sometimes, has already been spotted cozying up with a “Katy Perry look-a-like,” which I think is Daily Mail’s way of saying “another white lady.”

Kate Hudson has custody drama Things are about to get messy, y’all. After 10 years of sharing custody of son Ryder, Kate Hudson and her ex-husband, Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson, are in the midst of custody dispute. According to InTouch, Robinson wants full custody and a big ol’ chunk of child support from Hudson. Turns out, the two have

long disagreed over Hudson’s parenting style. Robinson, 50, has some, um, concerns. “He’s worried Kate hasn’t been as hands-on as she should be and he wants more guidance over their son,” a source tells the magazine. “It’s suddenly become a different situation.” Hudson, 37, is convinced her ex is out for her money which, fair. We’ll see how this plays out.

XBOX

Xbox Game Pass may be a game-changer Geek Girl in Hollywood

JENNA BUSCH

legionofleia.com

In case you need a break from the endless Oscar news and the Amazon outage, I’m here to distract you. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced a new subscription service for Xbox called Xbox Game Pass. For $9.99 a month, gamers can download over 100 Xbox games and backwardcompatible titles, with discounts if you decide to keep them. It’s not exactly the same as streaming services like Netflix. You guys know that when the internet gets wonky, streaming content can be sketchy. It’s one thing to have to restart “Friends” where you left off; it’s quite another to be just about to beat the boss and have the game crash on you. Downloading removes this otherwise fatal flaw. In discussing the service with my better half, one of the things that came up was how much more access this will give us to games. Let’s be honest: Games are freaking expensive. Now, I have friends who are game designers, so I know how much

work goes into making one. It’s just that, as an average person making an average salary, there are only so many games I’m going to shell out cash for. In a way, it’s a disservice to some of the smaller, independent games. I just can’t afford to give them a chance when I don’t have extra cash lying around. In a small way, used games gave us some freedom to pick up popular titles for a lot less. We could trade stuff in and try new things — but still, you’re likely going to go for the games that you’ve heard about, rather than try something new. With a monthly download service, you can play whatever you want. Look, I love the big titles. I do! It’s just that, if gamers en masse have a chance to check out games that maybe don’t have the same kind of advertising budget that the larger ones do, we might get more of those! Gaming can get into a rut. We’ve got firstperson shooters, RPGs, racing games, etc. Most of those, despite a few standouts, feel a lot alike. I’m really hoping this service, if it does well, will give indie games a chance to shine and developers will see that people want them.

alpha way, but in taking responsibility for her actions. The closeness she has with her friends seemed really authentic. Did you spend a lot of time hanging out together? I had a pretty rigorous schedule due to the nature of the movie. I wasn’t really going out. And I love my job and take it seriously. I was the lame one who would go home early and was constantly in a state of trauma.

MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Zoey Deutch has been on a tear. In the last year, she’s had scene-stealing supporting turns in “Everybody Wants Some!!,” “Why Him?” and “Dirty Grandpa.” “Before I Fall” pushes her to the front lines. An adaptation of Lauren Oliver’s YA novel, it’s essentially a more serious “Groundhog Day,” forcing Deutch’s Sam to relive the same fateful day, going from an oblivious mean girl to someone who cares about others. But Deutch — 22, and the daughter of Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch (“Pretty in Pink”) — doesn’t think you have to be a young adult to get it. Not to be glib, but speaking as a nonteenage girl,

Zoey Deutch, second to the left, plays one of a pack of mean girls (also including Halston Sage, Cynthy Wu and Medalion Rahimi) who winds up in a mysterious “Groundhog Day” scenario in “Before I Fall,” in theaters Friday. AWESONEMESS FILMS

I still got a lot out of this movie. The thing I’m most proud of is so many people at screenings have told me that after they saw it, they immediately called their wife or their sister or daughter or someone they deeply care about, to tell them they loved them. That felt very special to me. It’s not a movie solely for teenage girls.

It captures that moment when we’re young when we become less solipsistic, develop a sense of the bigger world and gain a sense of empathy. Hopefully. I think at the beginning, Sam is someone who disastrously follows the rules of her group without any self-reflection. She thinks life will carry her along without hav-

And besides, this is work. It’s work, it’s a job. I think people forget that. It’s always funny when people ask, “Did you have fun?” I’m like, “I don’t know if that’s the goal.” I love this, I take it very seriously.

You do seem to have gone nextlevel in the past couple years.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the word “ambition.” I love what I do and I’m ambitious. I don’t know why that word has a bad rap. It just means to work hard for what you want and love, as far as I’m concerned. I was always raised to work hard. I always knew what my purpose was. I always knew what I wanted to do and that I had to work hard for it. And also have a sense of humor. Certain ambitious people ruin the word for the people who have healthy ambition. Have you ever looked at the word “ambition”? The reason I bring that up is that when a female uses it, it’s like a bad word. When I say the word “ambition,” it has a negative connotation. Literally the word “ambition” is a desire to do or achieve something requiring determination or hard work. I take that as a really positive, empowering thing.

Die-hard Jane Austen fans or those just looking for good laugh are invited to check out “Wheel of Austen” at ImprovBoston this month. The show, which is the brainchild of Producer Michelle Boncek and Director John Herman, features a wheel of Austen tropes, the Woodbridge family and plenty of improvised absurdity. “Will there be a marriage proposal? Probably. Smelling salts? Sure,” exclaims Herman in a release. “But there might also be a UFO landing. In this show, anything can happen.”

“We had one show where one of the suitors found and adopted a group of baby ninja turtles, and he helped train them as they grew older,” Boncek tells us. She adds that they like to wonder what would happen in the Regency era: “What would happen if Elizabeth Bennet really loved ‘Desperate Housewives?’ You know, or if ‘Housewives of Atlanta’ was her favorite show.” The 70-ish-minute show will run every Friday this month — each show differing from the others, while maintaining the same characters and relationships. The cast consists of the

mother, three daughters and three suitors. (In past runs, a father has been present but because of scheduling conflicts, the mother had to be widowed this time around.) Cast members get to make suggestions for their characters’ inspirations in the beginning of the show, but there’s plenty of audience involvement, as well. Each chapter is then dictated by a spin of the wheel from which the winning trope will be improvised. “When John and I decided we were going to do the show, we worked together to really find a nice balance between being true to the spirit of Jane Austen, but also

making it accessible to people who might not be as big Jane Austen fans as I am,” explains Boncek, who loves Jane Austen so much that she has a tattoo of her on her arm. She says you don’t have to love Jane Austen, or even know who she is, to enjoy the show. “It ends up being a really silly rom-com each week,” she laughs.

Forsythe’s foresight Boston Ballet presents an ode to ballet with “Artifact 2017. REENA KARASIN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Boston Ballet is exploring the very nature of ballet with “Artifact 2017, a four-act work from world-renowned choreographer William Forsythe that highlights the legacy and potential of ballet. Three characters weave throughout the acts: the Man with the Megaphone, the Woman in Historical Dress and the Woman in Gray (also called the Mud Woman). The Man with the Megaphone represents formalized ballet and all its strict rules. The Woman in Historical Dress shows what ballet has the potential to be while working with the framework that the Man with the Megaphone lays out. The Woman in Gray, on the other hand, is a symbol of what ballet could be outside of the bounds of its inherent strictness. One of the ballet’s key features is improvisation, where the Woman in Gray improvises and the rest of the danc-

ers on stage mimic her movements. The pianist must also improvise to accommodate her onthe-spot decisions. Company member Reina Sawai, one of the dancers performing the role of the Woman in Gray, says she’s grown to enjoy the improvisation in “Artifact.

William Forsythe LIZA VOLL PHOTOGRAPHY

“It was difficult in the beginning, admits Sawai. “After practicing and trying new steps, they never said, ‘Don’t do it.’ I was able to make it my own. It’s been fun. I like to try to bring out something that I’ve never done before. Improvisation wasn’t the only thing that Sawai and the other dancers had to get used to. She explained that to prepare for Forsythe’s style they took a few

classes that focused on getting them out of the rigid postures of classical ballet. “Artifact debuted in 1984, but the show finds new life in “Artifact 2017, thanks to some changes Forsythe made for the Boston Ballet run. The choreographer added a men’s dance in the fourth act and created a completely new third act. “The third act is no dancing at all. We’re clapping and we’re saying these chants, we count, Sawai adds. But the choreography is just one component of Forsythe’s vision — he also designed the costumes, lighting and sets. The production kicks off Boston Ballet’s fiveyear partnership with the choreographer. Each year the company will add at least one of Forsythe’s pieces to its collection. According to Boston Ballet, the partnership will give the company more Forsythe pieces in its repertoire than any other company in the country. “Artifact 2017 will run through March 5 at the Boston Opera House. Tickets begin at $35.

Where to get it: Pit masters at Sweatman’s BBQ in Holly Hill spend the entire week smoking hogs and making sides for a knockout weekend-only buffet.

Where to get it: Not only loved by locals, Memphis’ Central BBQ slings its sauces across state lines to satisfy legions of hungry fans. The dry-rub ribs at Charlie Vergos Rendezvous have been the stuff of legend since 1948.

Kansas City Barbecue in Kansas City has been going strong since the early 1900s when Henry Perry served his dry rub from the depths of his inner-city pit. Local pit masters will dry rub everything in sight, but sauces are served generously and offered in a range of varieties; most include tomato and molasses for a tangy sweet flavor and thick texture.

You could acquire his services for $1 million and a halfconsumed bottle of Lady Bligh rum. Revis will likely move to free safety with his next team, but even there it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to play at a high level. “People are going to look at his tape from

The Bruins traded for right wing Drew Stafford, right, on Wednesday. ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

Red-hot Bruins tinker at trade deadline The B’s opted not to mess with their recent success. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

sports@metro.us

The 2017 NHL trade deadline came and passed on Wednesday at 3 p.m. without much action to write home about. The Bruins (33-24-6) only made one minor move as they traded a conditional sixth round draft pick to Winnipeg (28-30-6) for veteran right wing Drew Stafford (4 goals, 9 assists, minus-2 in 40 games this season for the Jets). Normally, the Bruins are a bit more active around this time of the year but with the team playing their best hockey of the season (winners of seven out of their last eight games under inter-

im head coach Bruce Cassidy) and possibly in years, you can understand why GM Don Sweeney wasn’t trying to make any big moves. His team has finally found some chemistry and they are rolling, currently in third place in the Atlantic Division and tied with Ottawa (33-226), which has played one fewer game. The 31-yearold Stafford is not a stiff by any means: He was a first-round pick by Buffalo in 2004 (13th overall) and in 707 NHL games, he’s totaled 179 goals and 213 assists. Bruins fans will remember that he had some good seasons with the Sabres, including a career-high 31 goals in 2010-11 and 30 assists the following campaign. He has four 20-goal seasons to his name, which in today’s NHL is nothing to scoff at, including 21 goals

and 17 assists last year in Winnipeg. Unlike the NBA, where only a few squads full of stars have a legitimate shot at the title every year, the NHL is much more of a crap shoot, which makes for unpredictable and often very exciting postseasons. Boston has 19 games remaining: 12 at TD Garden (including four out of its next five) and seven on the road. With Cassidy behind the bench, they have been a completely different team. If they keep this recent strong stretch of play up, you can bet that nobody in the Eastern Conference will want to see them in the first round. For star left wing Brad Marchand (28 goals, 38 assists), this all couldn’t come at a better time for his club. “We are feeling really good, to come back from

a long road trip and get two points (they beat Arizona 4-1 on Tuesday at the Garden)) is all that matters,” he said. “ We ’ r e playing g with more temp o and

Different guys are stepping up in each game.” Stafford practiced in Winnipeg on Wednesday afternoon with the Jets so no word on whether he’ll be in black and gold on Thursday (7, NESN) vs. the Rangers (40-21-2) at TD Garden. It’s still not certain as to where he would sslot into the lineup, but ttaking Jimmy Hayes’ ((2 goals, 3 assists in 48 games!) spot on the third g line with Frank Vatrano ((10 goals, 6 assists) at left wing and Ryan Spooner w ((10 goals, 23 assists) at ccenter would be a logiccal option. Stafford will definitely be here by the time t t h a t Boston hosts New Jersey (25-25-12) on Saturday night (7, NESN).

Aries Size up your situation and then make a move. Don’t give anyone a chance to dictate how you should live your life or do your job. If you try hard, you will gain respect.

Libra Pressure will lead to stress if you let it. Deal with emotional mayhem before it explodes in order to reverse any troubles that are brewing.

Taurus An emotional conversation will impart greater meaning to the way you want to do things in the future. Honesty will promote decisions based on trust and loyalty.

Scorpio Share your feelings. Doing so will be a relief and will help you recognize how your ideas are being perceived and what degree of help will be offered.

Gemini Consider the consequences if you speak up about something you know little about. Gather all the facts before you misrepresent someone who needs your help.

Sagittarius Socialize and mix business with pleasure. An honest and open approach will ensure that you are not misinterpreted. Leave no room for error.

Cancer You will find emotional comfort and peace through engaging in meditation and trying something altogether different. Broaden your scope.

Capricorn Be satisfied with what you have. Too much of anything will lead to added stress and an inability to follow your dreams. Moderation will help build greater security.

Leo A couple of physical changes will boost your spirits. Refuse to let a jealous individual who feels threatened by you discourage your plan to succeed.

Aquarius An emotional incident must not be allowed to interfere with a chance to move forward now. Make whatever changes are necessary to bypass trouble.

Virgo A short trip will be informative. You are best off seeing something firsthand if you want to get involved. Gains will be made if you get the inside scoop.

Pisces It’s a good day to talk with people who share your experience. Think carefully about what might need to be changed in order for you to meet your goals. EUGENIA LAST
