EPA PROPOSAL TARGETS WHITE SUPREMACY FLYERS OBAMA TO VISIT HUB IN MAY FOR KENNEDY AWARD CLIMATE, CLEAN WATER ON BOSTON CAMPUS
1
The White House is proposing to slash a quarter of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s budget, targeting climatechange programs and those designed to prevent air and water pollution like lead contamination, a source with direct knowledge of the proposal said. President Donald Trump has long signaled his intention to reverse former President Barack Obama’s climate-change initiatives. But Trump has vowed
his planned overhaul of green regulation would not jeopardize America’s water and air quality. The budget proposal, which aims to slice the environmental regulator’s overall budget by 25 percent to $6.1 billion and staffing by 20 percent to 12,400 as part of a broader effort to fund increased military spending, would cut deeply into programs like climate protection, environmental justice and enforcement. Flyers promoting white supremacy were found posted across the University of Massachusetts Boston campus recently, school officials said. In an email sent to the UMass community, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Winston Langley said the flyers were “targeting immigrants and minority persons — be they students, faculty, staff or visitors — and causing anxiety
and anger.” Langley also noted that the group responsible, Identity Evropa, has reportedly put up similar flyers at other universities in Massachusetts as well as several other states. Identity Evropa describes itself as a “generation of awakened Europeans who have discovered that we are part of the great peoples, history and civilization that flowed from the European continent,” according to its website. Barack Obama will visit Boston’s Columbia Point in early May to receive the 2017 Centennial John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. Given a couple weeks before the 100-year anniversary of Kennedy’s birth, the award will be presented to the two-term Democrat by Caroline Kennedy, who was Obama’s ambassador to Japan, and her son Jack Schlossberg. Caroline Kennedy
is the daughter of the late president, who was born in Brookline. Obama’s legacy leading the nation for eight years has yet to be settled, and President Donald Trump has committed himself to dismantling many of Obama’s programs and setting the country on a new course.

SESSIONS RECUSES HIMSELF FROM RUSSIA PROBES

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions removed himself on Thursday from any investigations into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election because he was involved with President Donald Trump’s campaign. But Sessions, a longtime U.S. senator before becoming the country’s top law enforcement official, said he did nothing wrong by not disclosing during Senate testimony that he had met last year with Russia’s ambassador. He said the meetings were in his capacity as senator, not as a campaign aide. “I have recused myself in the matters that deal with the Trump campaign,” Sessions told reporters at a hastily arranged news conference. Several fellow Republicans in Congress had called for the move, while Democrats urged him to resign. REUTERS GETTY IMAGES
DRUG CZAR STRESSES WORK WITH MEXICO
4
The head of counter-narcotics at the State Department stressed the importance of working with Mexico in countering the flow of killer drugs, a cooperative effort that has been called into question by President Donald Trump’s plan to build a border wall. William Brownfield estimated that more than 90 percent of the heroin consumed in the U.S. currently comes from Mexico. The White House has said a wall will
stem the flow of drugs, crime and illegal immigration, but Mexico has warned that a breakdown in relations could affect cooperation on these very issues. While drugs continue to stream across the border, Brownfield argued that the U.S. was better able to deal with the problem today than a decade ago because of international cooperation, including joint operations and intelligence sharing with Mexico. International Women’s Day may see activism jolt from tumult over Trump Observed on March 8, the worldwide event has a renewed sense of political purpose in the U.S. this year, experts and advocates say. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

A day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump, millions of women flooded the streets across the United States and around the world in political protest. They made their voices heard — along with men — as part of the historic Women’s March. The turnout in Washington was one of the largest demonstrations in U.S. history. women and our allies will act together for equity, justice and the human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people, through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity, organizers wrote. International Women’s Day got its start in 1908, when 15,000 women marched in New York City, demanding higher wages and voting rights. This year, on Wednesday, there are hundreds of official events scheduled in more than 65 countries to celebrate the day throughout the world. In the U.S. alone, there will be 150 events. THE FUN STARTS HERE Boyd Holbrook plays the villain chasing Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine through the American West in the gritty comic book movie “Logan.” BEN ROTHSTEIN
wknd
Boyd Holbrook vs. Wolverine The “Narcos” star is no comic book nerd, but he made an exception for the gritty “Logan.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Boyd Holbrook doesn’t usually do comic book movies. He does dark indie dramas like “The Free World,” dark thrillers like “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” dark TV shows like “Narcos.” (Though, sadly, he won’t be in that show’s third season.) The actor wasn’t sure he wanted to be in “Logan,” the third solo Wolverine picture. Then it turned out it was dark, too. Grimy, gritty and very R-rated, it finds Hugh Jackman’s X-Men mutant older, even boozier and angrier still. Holbrook plays the villain, Donald Pierce,
a hired goon for a tech corporation trying to genetically engineer their own race of young weaponized mutants. When one of them — a little girl played by Dafne Keen — escapes and seeks our hero’s help, Pierce and crew chase them through the American West. Holbrook, 35, talks to us about making his first blockbuster, which he’ll follow with next year’s reboot of “Predator.”
So the filmmakers didn’t force you to do a deep dive on Wolverine comics?
And you got to have a neck tattoo made of guns and skulls. Yeah, did you like that? A bit of flash. To me that conveys a backstory you really don’t have to verbalize in the film. This is an unusually gritty, realistic comic book movie. They even had a disclaimer in the script that read, “If a building falls on your head, you’re dead.” There’s no rising from the ashes.
I’m not much of a comic book nerd myself, so I can’t ask you comic book nerd questions. That’s OK. I’ve never read one myself. Never at all? Nope. I think I bought a comic once, but I never read it.
No, no, no. What they asked me to do was deep dive into the character. This is a character-driven piece. It’s rooted in some real family dynamics.
GETTY IMAGES
It’s also not an R-rated comic book movie like “Deadpool.” It’s not a comedy.
Breaking bad Were there certain classic movie villains you studied to play the bad guy? Picasso’s got a great quote: “Good artists take, great artists steal.” I’d be lying if I said I didn’t know who Alan Rickman was. The villain is usually the best part to play. Still, even Alan Rickman has said that his “Die Hard” character is not a villain. He said Hans Gruber was just a guy who wanted something others saw as evil. Yeah, I don’t think anyone who’s bad constantly goes through the day thinking, “Oh my god, I should really stop doing this!” [Laughs]
It’s kind of a bummer. That’s hat’s off to Hugh. He took a pay cut on this one. It’s not very commercial. These PG13 ones have confirmed box office power. To segregate yourself into an R rating, you’re taking a risk. But the people who started watching this Logan character 17 years ago are older now. You always wanted to see what Logan is capable
of with the claws and all that. I just think it would have been a shame if we didn’t go this route. It is horrifying to me that the first “X-Men” movie was 17 years ago. I had just graduated high school. But change is inevitable. I just don’t know how much longer people’s appetite for this demographic will last.

The newish (and very Pinterest-able) Hourly Oyster House in Harvard Square will offer the $28 two-course prix fixe option for dinner with a $16 optional wine pairing. Options at the Grafton Group’s 94-seat seafood spot are well-rounded and hearty, with sea-bass carpaccio, steamed mussels and clams in sunchoke broth and housemade pancetta for apps; crusted arctic char and herb-stuffed lamb belly for mains. A few hot-pot spots are participating in this year’s Dine Out, but we like Happy Lamb in Central Square best. Its $28 menu includes a soup base and protein (includ-

course $28 menu, with a $15 beer and wine pairing. Start with charcuterie featuring fried pigs’ ears and candied bacon before moving on to brockwurst with sauerkraut, or the Konigsteller for two — a 2-lb. pork shank with roasted apples and potatoes. Dessert is a vanilla yogurt cremetorte or chocolate
cake with almonds and coconut. One fun part about Dine Out options is trying multicourse meals at pricier establishments for a fraction of the price. Take, for example, Kendall Square’s Commonwealth, where you can feast on three courses of American classics for $38 flat. (A la carte entrees
and a cookie dessert for $38. Options include Thai chili pimento cheese with lime-spiced tortilla chips, Carolina BBQ pork potstickers, garlic-chile braised octopus and Teriyaki bison burgers with smoked gouda and shitakes. Hugh Jackman plays a worse-for-wear Wolverine in his third solo “X-Men vehicle, called simply “Logan. BEN ROTHSTEIN
Professor X (Patrick Stewart) drops an F-bomb. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) cusses, too, and when he slashes people with his claws, the blades dismember limbs and go through dudes’ faces. This could have been a mere
novelty; worse, it could have been “Deadpool,â€? the smug, aggressively self-satisďŹ ed R-rated annoyance. But it’s not more than that. It’s a sincere deep wound of a movie about hurt characters who happen to have superpowers. But it’s also a novelty, too. Once you have “Loganâ€? pegged — it’s a renegade comic book movie with reallooking violence, subverting our genre expectations — there’s not much else to it. Saying a comic book movie

“The Shack Director: Stuart Hazeldine Stars: Sam Worthington, Octavia Spencer Rating: PG-13

“The Shack isn’t exactly subversive Christian entertainment, but
consider this: It features a scene where our mortal hero (Sam Worthington) angrily accuses God, to God’s face, of letting his daughter die a horrible death. What’s more, the Lord’s not some old dude in a white beard; it’s Octavia Spencer. Throw in Jesus played by a Middle Eastern actor
(Aviv Alush), plus a Holy Spirit that’s an Asian woman (Sumire Matsubara), and you have a movie that might rue the feathers of its target Middle American audience. Surely they won’t look kindly on their divine honchos depicted as nonwhite, let alone female. This is a dierent breed of evangelical cinema than “Heaven is for Realâ€? or “Miracles from Heavenâ€? or (ye gods) “God’s Not Dead.â€? It’s ambitious and genuinely challenging, putting in the work of grappling with challenging theological ideas. And yet it’s still not very good. It’s still shackled to a genre of toxic sincerity and questionable logic. Worthington plays Mack,
a grieving father mysteriously lured to a remote cabin. There he meets the embodiments of the Holy Trinity, and over the course of a backwoods getaway weekend they walk Mack through his bottomless grief, all while hashing out some of the Big Questions. Part apologetics tract, part self-help manual, “The Shack features plenty of God talk, but it’s not the easy, reassuring kind. It understands that pain isn’t easily overcome, and it wrestles with the idea that an all-knowing, all-loving God would allow such tragedies to occur. Of course, it still peddles some easy answers, and falls back on a cop-out ending. Still, it’s almost a real movie. MP

The New England Patriots are reportedly not trading Jimmy Garoppolo. That’s what ESPN’s Adam Schefter was
shouting from his soap box on Wednesday. First he tweeted it, then he went on radio and TV to confirm his own report. “I’m telling you right now, they love Jimmy Garoppolo,” said Schefter on ESPN Wednesday afternoon. “They’re holding onto Jimmy Garoppolo. They view him as somebody that they want around. “They know the market of quarterbacks,” added Schefter. “And they’re not in the market of getting rid of 25-yearold quarterbacks, even if they have a year left on their contract. Jimmy Garoppolo is not going to be traded.” Clearly, Schefter is getting this intel from someone in the Patriots organization. He’s bold and confident in his demeanor, speaking with a heavy tone. And he might as well be tweet-

ESPN’s top NFL reporter is a little too loud and proud about this news, which reminds me of my first journalism class at UMass-Amherst, where we learned that “no news is news.” I label this as such because I don’t recall the initial report that had the Patriots trying to trade Garoppolo, or even listening to offers for him. So, if you’re the Patriots, what exactly is this leak to Schefter in response to? The idea of trading Garoppolo is, and always has been, an open-minded conclusion based on the public perception that the Patriots are sticking with Tom Brady for the foreseeable future. And that idea stems from the fact that Brady — even though he turns 40 in August — is the reigning Super Bowl MVP and is still playing at an elite level. Also, what can’t be ignored in all the Garoppolo trade chatter is Garoppolo’s contract. The 25-year-old backup quarterback enters the final year of his rookie deal in 2017. After that, he can sign wherever he wants next offseason. Unless, of course, the
Patriots down on Brissett? According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Patriots think much more highly of Jimmy Garoppolo than fellow backup Jacoby Brissett. “My understanding is Patriots would not be thrilled now to turn the team over to Jacoby Brissett if Tom Brady is injured,” Rapoport tweeted this week. “That’s Jimmy G’s value.”
Patriots hit him with the franchise tag. But, come on. Do you really think the Patriots would pay a backup quarterback $20 million in 2018? That would not make much sense at all, from a business perspective. And this is a business. Not just for the Patriots, but also for Garoppolo. What, you mean to tell me Garoppolo is going to sign a multiyear deal at below-market value because he loves being in New England? Stop it. The kid wants to play. He wants to start. And if he had it his way, he’d be a team’s starting
quarterback right now. It just makes too much sense to trade Garoppolo this offseason. That’s why we talk about it. So when Schefter reports this, and then continues to pound his chest on multiple outlets about his own report, it only comes in response to trade chatter that’s been essentially created by fans and media alike. Are the Patriots that concerned with public opinions that they felt the need to leak their true feelings about their backup quarterback? Or are they purposely proclaiming Garoppolo untouchable because, well, they can, and because they’d like other teams to know that, “If you want him, you better call us with your ‘Godfather’ offer”? I’m putting my money on the latter. I’m also now willing to bet that Schefter will be the one to break the news, if the Patriots do end up getting the king’s ransom they’re seemingly looking for. Which is entirely possible, and why I still believe the Patriots will try to trade Garoppolo.
“They’re holding onto Jimmy Garoppolo. They view him as somebody that they want around.” Adam Schefter

During the long regular season, Brad Stevens is not so much concerned with the end result of each game, but more so how his Celtics team got to the end of the game. You might even think he’d take a hard-fought, well-executed game that ended in a loss over a sloppy win. On Wednesday against one of the best teams in the NBA, Stevens got the best of both worlds — the Celtics played a complete game of basketball on both ends of the court and walked off their TD Garden floor with a big four-point win over the team they’re chasing in the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers. How much of an effect this win has on either team down the road is anybody’s guess — they still meet one more time in Boston — but if seeing is believing, then
Why they’ll win: Quick, name three players on the Suns. Eric Bledsoe, Devin Booker, and, and, umm … yeah. Those are two solid guards, but Boston’s defense and depth is too much. Why they’ll lose: Well, these two teams haven’t met yet this season, so there is a bit of unfamiliarity there. That’s all we got. Oh, and Devin Booker.

there is plenty of reason to believe the Celtics can roll with the Cavaliers. They took Cleveland’s punches from LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, and punched back with Isaiah Thomas and an Avery Bradley-led defensive effort. The win also allows them to enjoy their plane ride out west a heck of a lot more, as they begin a five-game road trip beginning Friday in Los Angeles against the “rival” Lakers. “It gives us a lot of

confidence,” Thomas said. “If we would have lost it would have been tough going into that road trip. So we got a lot of confidence and hopefully we can take care of business. Hopefully we can win games on this road trip.” Jae Crowder echoed Thomas’ comments, saying heading out on a win gives them momentum after a “bad loss” to the Hawks. Here’s a look at what the Celtics will face on their West Coast swing:

Why they’ll win: These two teams met earlier this season in Boston, and once the Celtics started playing their style of basketball and not the showtime Lakers’ style, they were effective. Expect that from the start. Why they’ll lose: Yes, the C’s go in to this game riding some momentum, but they can’t rest on their laurels against a Lak-
Why they’ll win: The Clips have lost three of four out of the break, and with back-to-back road games on Friday and Saturday, they could be reeling by the time Boston arrives on Monday. Why they’ll lose: Live by the three, die by the three. The C’s took a franchise record 52 threepointers against the Clips on Feb. 5. They hit 16. If

Why they’ll win: The Nuggets are hanging on to that No. 8 seed, but this isn’t much of a playoff team. They rank 28th in opponent points per game (111.4) and are just 16-14 at home. Why they’ll lose: Remember this name: Nikola Jokic. The big man is just one year into the league and already a stud, averaging 15.6 points and 9.2 rebounds.

Why they’ll win: The C’s went toe-to-toe with the Warriors in one of the best regular-season games of the year earlier this season. Now, the Warriors are without Kevin Durant.
