BARRON’S: SNAP’S STOCK SCHWARZENEGGER FIRED, TENN. CHICKEN FLOCK DIDN’T QUIT, TRUMP SAYS HIT BY AVIAN INFLUENZA PRICE HARD TO JUSTIFY

1

President Donald Trump disputed Arnold Schwarzenegger’s announcement about quitting as host of the reality show “The Celebrity Apprentice,” saying that Schwarzenegger was leaving involuntarily after drawing few viewers. Schwarzenegger had announced on Friday that he would not return for a second season of the NBC show. He blamed Trump, an executive producer and former host of the

show, for low ratings, describing the president’s involvement as “baggage.” Trump sees it differently. “Arnold Schwarzenegger isn’t voluntarily leaving the Apprentice, he was fired by his bad [pathetic] ratings, not by me,” Trump wrote in a message on his personal Twitter account. “Sad end to great show.” REUTERS

A strain of bird flu has been detected in a commercial chicken breeder flock in Tennessee’s Lincoln County and the 73,500 birds will be culled to prevent the virus from entering the food system, U.S. and state agriculture officials said. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said this represented the first confirmed case of highly pathogenic H7 avian influenza (HPAI) in commercial

poultry in the United States this year. The facility has been placed under quarantine, along with approximately 30 other poultry farms within a 6.2-mile radius of the site, the Tennessee state government said. Other flocks in the quarantined area are being tested for the virus, it added. In 2014 and 2015, the United States killed nearly 50 million birds, mostly egg-laying hens, during a bout of HPAI. The United States Soccer Federation has instituted a policy that requires players on a national team to “stand respectfully” during national anthems, The New York Times and other media reported. The policy was reportedly passed by the federation’s board of directors on Feb. 9 but came to light Saturday. The policy, posted on Twitter by former men’s national team player Stuart Holden,

reads: “All persons representing a Federation national team shall stand respectfully during the playing of the national anthems at any event in which the Federation is represented.” U.S. Soccer director of communications Neil Buethe confirmed the policy in an email to The New York Times. The policy comes after U.S. national player Megan Rapinoe knelt during the anthem on two occasions last year. REUTERS

INVESTIGATE

TRUMP’S AMERICA

IT’S A MAD, MAD WORLD OPINION

ELLIS HENICAN @henican

Is Donald mad — or mad? Mad as in angry, or mad as in deeply disconnected from the here and now? Not halfway through his first 100 days, there is screaming evidence for both diagnoses. No doubt the new president is angry. On Friday, just before flying to Mar-a-Lago, a fuming Trump summoned his top aides to the Oval Office. The group included chief strategist Steve Bannon, chief of staff Reince Priebus, daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner, communications director Mike Dubke and press secretary Sean Spicer. The prez was positively

seething that loyal Attorney General Jeff Sessions will no longer head the Justice Department’s investigation into Russia’s attack on the 2016 election. That made Sessions the second high-ranking Trumpster to get publicly slapped for being too cozy with the dour Russian Ambassador, Sergey Kislyak — and then lying about it. The week had gotten off to such a cheerful start, Trump grumbled to the assembled aides. The reviews for Tuesday’s speech to Congress had been so upbeat â€” and now this!? But in the hot glare of Palm Beach, angry-mad soon gave way to the factfree, certifiable, seeingthings-that-don’t-exist kind of mad. Without a crumb of actual evidence, the tweet-happy commander-in-chief accused “Bad [or sick] guyâ€? Barack Obama of tapping the

Trump Tower telephones. “Nixon/Watergate, typed the so-called leader of free world. “McCarthyism! Apparently, he’d been listening to right-wing talk radio or reading Breitbart News again. Obama’s people declared the claim “simply false. And all day yesterday, sane-ish political people on both sides of the aisle were trying to decide: Which was it? Should they be baffled, frightened or stunned? “The president’s in trouble, snorted New York’s Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader of the Senate. Republican Sen. Ben Sasse charged that Trump had just unleashed a “civilizationwarping crisis of public trust. A nice turn of phrase!  Republican Marco Rubio could only shake his head and roll his eyes. “I’ve never heard that allegation made before

White House asks Congress to probe Trump’s accusation of Obama wiretap The White House asked Congress on Sunday to examine whether the Obama administration abused its investigative authority during the 2016 campaign, as part of an ongoing congressional probe into Russia’s inuence on the election. The request came a day after President Donald Trump alleged, without supporting evidence, that then-President Obama ordered a wiretap of the phones at Trump’s campaign headquarters in Trump Tower in New York. White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Trump and administration oďŹƒcials would have no further comment on the issue until Congress has completed its probe, potentially heading o attempts to get Trump to explain his accusations. “Reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling,â€? Spicer said in a statement. Rep. Devin Nunes, a California Republican and head of the House Intelligence Committee examining possible links between Russia and Trump’s campaign, said Sunday that any possible surveillance on campaign oďŹƒcials would be part of the probe. Reports of fake ICE agents extorting immigrants put communities on edge Local law enforcement authorities nationwide are advising immigrants to be aware of scammers preying on their uncertainty. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

Rumors began flying last month around Lynn, Massachusetts, that federal immigration officers were conducting large-scale raids to apprehend undocumented immigrants. It was late February, after a federal judge had suspended President Donald Trump’s travel ban that prohibited immigrants from seven mostly Muslim countries from entering the U.S. In addition to the travel ban, the administration launched an aggressive new action to enforce existing immigration laws. Trump’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants was putting people on edge. Some residents of Lynn, a working-class, racially diverse city just outside Boston, described being confronted by officers from U.S. Immigration

and Customs Enforcement. What was troubling, however, was that these ICE agents had threatened to arrest immigrants unless cash payments were handed over. Talk around the town of more than 90,000 grew so intense that local police took to Facebook, writing, “There have been NO ICE raids in this city,” and adding that if someone posing as a federal agent demands money, it was “a scam.”

The continually changing immigration rules have created an uncertainty nationwide on the part of immigrants, with attorneys and advocacy organizations trying to figure out what to do next, and what advice to provide. Adding to that anxiety are recurring reports of people fraudulently posing as federal immigration agents, hoping to extort money from desperate families trying to avoid deportation. Incidents have

most recently been reported in New York City and Massachusetts. After multiple incidents of that kind of fraud in New York, elected officials, including state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, have warned immigrants to be aware of scammers. Authorities in Philadelphia are also on alert. “Unfortunately, it’s a common scam that we’ve seen over the years,” said Adrian Smith, a public affairs officer for the ICE

field office there. And it appears to still be happening. On Friday, unconfirmed reports spread online of recent ICE raids in Framingham, Massachusetts, about 30 miles west of Boston. In an interview, Framingham Police Lt. Stephen Cronin said he was not aware of any such incidents. Immigration officials did not respond to a question about whether any official activity had taken place in the town. Cronin noted that typically, federal law enforcement agencies would reach out to local police ahead of any enforcement action. They are not required to do so, however. Whether or not federal officials give advance notice, local police can address the issue of a possible scam agent approaching residents, the lieutenant said. “We can send an officer over there to confirm an agent’s identification, and we can call the ICE field office and ask them, ‘Do you have an operation going on?’” he said. “So we always recommend, if in doubt, call local law enforcement and if we don’t already know [what’s going on], we have the

resources to find out.” Undocumented immigrants may be worried about contacting local police, a move that could reveal their status and subject them to deportation. But Cronin said that isn’t the objective of local law enforcement. “As local police, it’s not a priority to us if you’re a legal immigrant or not,” he said, noting an exception for violent felons. “What is priority is if we can avoid violent confrontation. We rather you did call, so we can avoid problems, and your immigrant status is not a great concern to us.” But those fears may not be entirely unfounded. Trump has talked about enlisting local authorities to aid in his tougher deportation measures, and two county sheriffs in Massachusetts have been outspoken in their support of those efforts. They appear to be in the minority however. A greater number of local officials have said that assisting federal agents would discourage immigrants from coming forward about other crimes, and would spread a sense of distrust through communities.

Are Amber Heard and Elon Musk a thing now? It sounds like Amber Heard has a new older man in her life. According to Us Weekly, the actress who almost made the first “Magic Mike” movie unbearable is maybe dating Elon Musk. The two reportedly attended a VIP screening of Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth Sequel: Truth to Power,” together. If you can think of anything more romantic than watching a film about the disastrous effects of global warming and how we’re all gonna die, please let me know. A source tells Us Weekly that the two hang out and “casually

Give these ladies a superhero movie Anne Heche and Sandra Oh talk about beating the crap out of each other in “Catfight. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

If you don’t think the idea of a big comic book movie with Sandra Oh and Anne Heche beating up supervillains is a great movie idea, then you haven’t seen “Catfight. The two acclaimed actresses go at it three separate times in the indie comedy. They coldcock each other in the face. They do body slams. They bust out sleeper moves. By the end the “Grey’s Anatomy and “Hung alumnae have transformed into bloody, exhausted, feral messes. “I want us to be superheroes, Heche says, laughing. “I want someone to come after us and put us in a hot, big-bud-

Neither are very happy with their lives, and what starts out as a mild tiff explodes into a knock-down, dragout fight. It was a first for both Oh and Heche. “The most important thing in the world to me was being nervous that I would accidentally punch Sandra Oh out, Heche recalls. “Fortunately, I didn’t. We got hurt, we got beat up, we put everything into our fights. But neither one of us hurt the other. There was another uphill battle to fight, though. “This is a very tiny film, Oh says. “We had no rehearsal and no budget. It’s not the kind of thing where you say, ‘Oooh, Matt Damon trained for

six months to be Jason Bourne, that’s awesome!’ We did not have that. “We had our morning coffee and then started

punching each other, Heche adds. The film’s very title conjures up less-enlightened times — an era of

grindhouse exploitation cheapies in which women beat the crap out of each other for the enjoyment of a male audience. The smackdowns in “Catfight don’t feel like they’re only there for dudes. “There’s a lot of energy here that you don’t get to see women express so physically in films, Oh says. The film — written and directed by a man, Onur Tukel, as it were — offers far more than Oh- Heche beatdowns. In between their three fights, we follow them on their separate lives, which often involve hilariously over-the-top tragedies. For example, after their first fight, Veronica is knocked into a coma. She awakens two years later to find her husband and son have died and her riches have dwindled. There’s a tricky tone afoot here: We’re supposed to find this both sad and darkly funny. “The tragedy is the

Miles away With two new live albums, Vanessa Calrton says she’s just hitting her stride. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

Vanessa Carlton wants to clarify her distinction from her piano-pop roots. Her 2001 breakout hit, “A Thousand Miles” earned her three Grammy noms and top 40 hit. The piano riff played in and out of a decade’s worth of rom-com heroines’ morning strolls, and just last month, returned once again as a sample on Cam’ron’s forthcoming single “10,000 Miles.” But it’s her 2015 album, “Liberman,” a lush, sparkling 10-track that strays into synth territory that Carlton likens to a defining thesis statement. And 2011’s “Rabbits on the Run,” the “start of

for the people who were eyeing me — as journalists or as my peers, musicians I admire and respect — they heard it and were like, ‘Oh, this is what she’s doing now.’” “Liberman” gets a second consideration with “Liberman Live,” an eight-track recording of the album from Carlton’s 2015 stop at

This month, she follows it up with “Earlier Things Live,” a collection of six songs from her earlier catalog (including “White Houses” and “A Thousand Miles”), recorded in concert, that same evening. Carlton and her manager chose to lay down a recording of the night after a successful live run with “Liberman,” having decided the vibes created should live “beyond the tour.” Deer Tick singer-

guitarist John McCauley guests on the album, as do the Watson Twins and folk violist Skye Steele. (Carlton and McCauley have been married since 2013; Nicks performed their ceremony.) “It was cool to put those older tunes together, because obviously my voice has changed so much over the years,” she adds. “It was like, ‘Actually, this is what I sound like now, and these are those songs, the older stuff.’”

As for Carlton’s drift from pop, she recognizes the role working outside a major label played in her evolution. “Liberman” was released on Caroline/ Dine Alone Records, an indie label that Tokyo Police Club and Twin Forks also call home. (Prior, Carlton had been signed to A&M, where she released 2002’s “Be Not Nobody” and 2004’s “Harmonium.”) “It’s a real change to get over the hurdle of the marketing structure I was in, and the sound I had in the major label machine, but in the end, that’s not who I am,” Carlton says. “I think because of ‘Liberman,’ I’m ready to up my game even more. I want to put myself in a role I’m not uncomfortable in, and push myself. I want to keep evolving. I have no interest in the past, really.”

HOW TO GET AHEAD From Python and JavaScript basics to creating your own mobile app — you can master it all. SARA FEINSTEIN @SaraBFeinstein

sara.feinstein@metro.us

Let’s face it, coding isn’t just for the supernerds anymore. In fact, it’s become the most indemand skill across industries. But not everyone can afford to pay, let alone make time, for in-person classes. Here are five you could take free, and on your own schedule:

Introduction to Computer Science Taught by four instructors from Harvard University, this entry-level course provides learners with a broad and robust understanding of computer science and programming. Students will be introduced to the topics of abstraction, software engineering, data structures and web development, to name a few, and become familiar with a number of languages including C, Python, SQL, JavaScript, CSS and HTML.

Coding Mobile Apps for Entrepreneurs

This course will explain how to create fully functional apps for all major mobile platforms and distribute them on the Play Store, Apple’s App Store and the Windows Store. The material will also cover the basics of coding, which will enable students to create richer apps with more functions, like storing text and data on the phone and connecting to the internet. The best part: No prior coding knowledge is required.

jobs education

Introduction to Interactive Programming in Python Designed to help students with very little or no computing background, this class will go through the basics of building simple interactive applications using Python. Learners will be introduced to the basic elements of programming (such as expressions, conditionals and functions) and then use these elements to create applications such as a digital stopwatch. To top it all off, at the end of the course, students will build their own version of the classic arcade game “Pong.

Training future lady bosses Ann Taylor’s HERlead Fellowship provides mentorship for the next generation of female leaders. SARA FEINSTEIN @SaraBFeinstein

sara.feinstein@metro.us

“Behind every conference call, there have been catcalls,” Ann Taylor’s new video, “This is Ann,” informs. “Calls from school, tough calls, wake-up calls,” it continues. Released in lieu of March’s National Women’s History Month, the 50-second clip created by an all-women team, including Grammy-nominated Meshell Ndegeocello, carefully strings together a series of blackand-white images in the hopes of echoing Ann Taylor’s main message: “That behind every great woman is another, and another.” “We have a rich history of connecting with

Ann Taylor’s video, “This is Ann.” PROVIDED

inspiring women — it all starts with our clients,” says Holly Tedesco vice president of marketing at Ann Taylor. “Recent partnerships have allowed us to truly celebrate the accomplishments and creativity of women who are groundbreaking entrepreneurs and powerful forces in their fields. ‘This is Ann’ is a moment to reflect on

the women who inspire us and the real lives they lead, honoring the generations of women who came before us, and the women who stand beside us.” Through powerful images of everyday women, the video inspires viewers to not only look back on the struggles women have experienced over the past 60 years, but to

reimagine the future for the next generation of powerful leaders. It goes hand in hand with their other agenda: reigniting their HERlead Fellowship, a project, which since 2011, has trained, mentored and inspired over 250 high school girls from across the U.S. and equipped them with the skills they need to affect global progress. The video calls for those watching to apply or nominate a rising high school junior or senior with the passion to create positive change in her community — 30 of which will be chosen and attend the Leadership Forum in New York City where they’ll connect with a powerful network of global women leaders to cultivate their own leadership abilities. To learn more about HERlead or to apply, visit Herlead.vitalvoices. org. The application process is open through March 18.

FANTASY BASEBALL: FINDING SLEEPERS HARDER THAN EVER

In recent years, the amount of publicly available information about baseball has increased substantially in both quantity and quality. As a result, it’s become more difficult to identify fantasy sleepers, or even to agree on whether the term means much of anything anymore. If your league is competitive, chances are you’re not surprising anyone in the room with most of the names on your draft board. Arguably better terms going forward, are “value” or “bargain.” These are less subjective and don’t carry the same “element of surprise” connotation. Here are a few players who could turn a

serious profit for your fantasy team in 2017 based on current NFBC average draft position (ADP) data.

Dansby Swanson Atlanta Braves (ADP: 188) Acquired in the Shelby Miller trade last season, the 2015 top overall pick jumped from High-A to the majors and immediately set about making that deal look even more like a complete fleecing for the Braves. Swanson hit .302/.361/.442 with three homers, three stolen bases, and 37 R+RBI in 38 games after being promoted to the big leagues. His .383 BABIP was a touch on the high side, but his speed and quality of contact did support an

above-average mark. Even with some regression, Swanson should hit for a decent average and reach double digits in both HR and SB in his first full season.

Aaron Nola Philadelphia Phillies (ADP: 209) In his first full big-league season, Nola maintained his solid walk rate while adding several percentage points to his K% and cutting down on home runs. Under normal circumstances, he’d be somebody for whom we were all paying an expectant price. Unfortunately, an elbow injury and one of the lowest strand rates of the last 25 years con-

spired to wreck his ERA and ultimately, the injury ended his season. Recent reports indicate that he’ll enter spring training with no restrictions. Nola was in the midst of a breakout before the injury, but he’s been the 56th pitcher off the board on average in drafts so far. It’s rare that you have the opportunity to buy a breakout for peanuts after it’s already happened. Don’t let it pass you by.

Jarrod Dyson Seattle Mariners (ADP: 245) Dyson was an excellent fourth outfielder with the Royals for most of this decade, his speed and defense making up for a

lack of punch at the plate. He’s sixth in the majors in stolen bases since 2012, despite averaging fewer than 300 plate appearances per season during that time. He’s reportedly set to begin the seasons as the Mariners’ primary left fielder and leadoff man, making his current draft price a potentially major bargain. He may not run as often as he did as a part-time player, but 40 swipes seems like a reasonable expectation. With a quality lineup behind him, Dyson should score plenty of runs, as well. He’s a zero in the home run and RBI categories, but given the current environment, the veteran is one of the few cheap speed options available.

Unlikely that Pats would target Marshall Brandon Marshall is now a free agent. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ career record as a head coach in the NFL is 1117. The biggest win of that 11 came on Oct. 12, 2009 when McDaniels’ Broncos beat Bill Belichick’s Patriots, 20-17, in overtime in Denver. Brandon Marshall scored the Broncos’ only touchdowns in that game, finding the end zone twice. That was one instance where McDaniels and Marshall clicked, but their marriage in Denver was as rocky as the mountains that surround Mile High Stadium. In McDaniels’ first preseason as a head coach, he suspended Marshall for conduct detrimental to the team. Marshall was seen as a lazy player in camp and there was one instance where he “punted a ball away instead of handing it to a ball boy.” According to a 2014 Grantland.com article, in the final game of the Broncos’ 2009 regular season: “Marshall arrived late for a physical therapy session ‘for treatment of a hamstring injury the team already believed he was ex-

aggerating’ and was promptly benched. “This appears to have been the final straw between McDaniels and Marshall, straining their relationship beyond repair. Let the record show that both parties deserve blame: While Marshall’s various offenses may have warranted punitive action, McDaniels’ uncanny knack for pissing off players shouldn’t be overlooked. In the end, Marshall was traded to the Dolphins for two

second-round picks, essentially forcing the Broncos to draft DeMaryius Thomas as his replacement, which has obviously worked out pretty well.” It should be noted that McDaniels was still the head coach in Denver when Marshall was dealt to Miami. Based on the above,

it would seem that Marshall is one of the last players in the league McDaniels would enjoy seeing in Foxboro. But it’s clear that both men have changed considerably from their stints in Colorado. McDaniels, who was just 33 years old when he became an NFL head coach for the first time,

acknowledges that he just wasn’t ready for the big stage. Marshall was only 25 at the time, and though he burned bridges in Chicago and Miami as well as Denver — he became a leader in the locker room with the

Jets. McDaniels and Marshall are far from BFFs, but they do have a relatively healthy relationship today. When the Jets beat the Patriots 2620 in December of 2015, the Patriots decided to give the Jets the ball first in overtime. The move backfired as New York scored on its first possession and clinched victory. McDaniels went up to Marshall after the game and the two discussed the situation. “After the game, Josh McDaniels came up to me, my old ball coach in Denver, and I asked, ‘What were you guys thinking?,” Marshall said, according to CSNNE. “He explained to me the situation a little bit but I didn’t believe him. “They’re so smart over there. Coach Belichick is so smart. It wasn’t serious what Josh told me. Their offense only scored one time or something all day. They wanted to play the field position game. Have us go three and out. Possibly punt and win field position, then go home. It was just bad timing for them.”
