The son of 2016 Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine was arrested last weekend during a protest against President Donald Trump in Minnesota after a scuffle with law enforcement, police said. Officers used a chemical irritant spray and a knee strike to subdue and arrest Linwood Michael Kaine on Saturday at a park on the grounds of the state Capitol in St. Paul, said Steve Linders, a

spokesman for the St. Paul Police Department. Kaine, 24, was arrested after reports of fireworks being used inside the Capitol building, Linders said. Kaine was arrested on suspicion of second-degree riot. St. Paul City Attorney Samuel Clark said on Wednesday he was reviewing the case for possible misdemeanor charges. REUTERS

ALL OPTIONS ON TABLE TO DEAL WITH N KOREA

The United States said “all options are on the table” to deal with North Korea and dismissed China’s suggestion of a “dual suspension” of U.S. and South Korea military drills and Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear tests. “We are not dealing with a rational person,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after the United Nations Security Council discussed

North Korea’s launch of four ballistic missiles on Monday. “It is an unbelievable, irresponsible arrogance that we are seeing coming out of Kim Jong Un at this time,” Haley said. She said the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump was reevaluating how it would handle North Korea and that “all options were on the table,” adding: “We are making those decisions now and we will act accordingly.” REUTERS

Banks and other financial companies expecting big benefits from Republicanled deregulation spent record amounts on lobbying in the last election cycle, according to an advocacy group report released on Wednesday. The financial sector spent $2.8 billion on political activity from the beginning of 2015 to the end of 2016, including $1.2 billion in campaign contributions — more than twice the amount

given by any other business sector, according to the study from Americans for Financial Reform. That works out to $3.7 million per member of Congress and is the most ever tracked by the group, which analyzed spending data going back to 1990. Furthermore, the actual amount is probably higher, because it did not include so-called “dark money”: funds donated to political advocacy by nonprofit groups. REUTERS

CIA contractors likely breached security and handed over documents about the agency’s use of hacking tools to anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials told Reuters. Two officials speaking on condition of anonymity said intelligence agencies have been aware since the end of last year of the breach, which

led to WikiLeaks releasing thousands of pages of information on its website on Tuesday. According to the documents, Central Intelligence Agency hackers could get into Apple Inc. (AAPL.O) iPhones, devices running Google’s Android software and other gadgets in order to capture text and voice messages before they were encrypted with sophisticated software. REUTERS

Protesters in New York City demonstrate for women, against Trump administration Police arrested at least 13 people, including organizers of the Women’s March on Washington. Women in New York City joined others across the United States on Wednesday to demonstrate in favor of economic equality and against President Donald Trump’s policies on abortion and healthcare. The rallies and protests marked “A Day Without a Woman,” during which some skipped work and boycotted stores. Looking to seize upon the momentum of the Women’s March on Washington on Jan. 21, the day after Trump’s inauguration, the one-day protest coincided with International Women’s Day with events in more than 50 countries, organizers said. “I had to go to show that is not my president. Every time he opens his mouth, it’s a garbage can,” said Iloane Lila, 73, who joined thousands of women gathered near Central Park for a march to Trump Tower. Lila, a Trinidad native, said she asked for the day off from her job as a nanny and attended her first-ever political rally in January, prompted by her

anger at Trump. Thirteen people were arrested in the vicinity of Columbus Circle during the demonstrations, according to police. Among those taken into custody were Women’s March on Washington co-organizers Linda Sarsour, Tamika Mallory, Carmen Perez and Bob Bland, according to the march’s Twitter page. A Bronx woman, who

attended the Women’s March on Washington in January, said she hopes Wednesday’s rallies will continue to spotlight the issues raised during the massive demonstration in the nation’s capital. “It’s a question of momentum and it might feel like it’s not full-speed ahead, but I think that anybody who was at that march will never forget what it felt like to be

with all those people and that’s not going away,” she said. “That feeling is going to continue to drive us.” Stephanie Vargas, 25, who majors in women’s gender studies at Hunter College, agreed about the need to build on the momentum of the Washington demonstration. “I hope voices will be heard,” said Vargas, who was attending her

first rally. “I’m a mother, so now I get why things are the way they are and I don’t want that for my daughter when she grows up. That’s why I’m here.” Trump, whose 11-yearold comments about grabbing and kissing women against their will surfaced during the campaign, took to his Twitter account early on Wednesday to cite International

Women’s Day and the “critical role” of women around the world. “I have tremendous respect for women and the many roles they serve that are vital to the fabric of our society and our economy,” the president tweeted. It was unknown how many women may have sacrificed a day’s pay or withheld their purchasing power from the economy. By having women, who make up 47 percent of the U.S. civilian labor force, flex their economic muscle, organizers hoped to call attention to the gender pay gap, access to reproductive health services, and Trump’s actions that have restricted access to abortion overseas. American women on average earn 79 cents for every $1 that men make, and African-American and Latina women make even less, said Terry O’Neill, president of the National Organization for Women. Since women account for twothirds of all minimumwage workers, lifting the hourly wage would significantly narrow the pay gap, she said. The minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 at the federal level since 2009, although it is higher in many states. REUTERS AND METRO STAFF

Amid boycott, Ivanka Trump’s fashion line reports record sales Amid calls for a boycott against any retailer that carries first daughter Ivanka Trump’s eponymous fashion line for women, the label is reporting an uptick in sales. “Since the beginning of February, they were some of the best performing weeks in the history of the brand,” Abigail Klem, who assumed the role of president of Ivanka Trump’s brand in January, said in an interview with Refinery29. “For several different retailers Ivanka Trump was a top performer online, and in some of the categories it was the [brand’s] best performance ever.” While the Klem declined to share internal data with Refinery29, the report cited Lyst, an e-commerce aggregator that tracks purchasing data from retailers. In the first two months of the year — once Ivanka Trump had stepped down — her label’s sales soared nearly 350 percent. It

jumped from the 550th brand for sales in January to the 11th in sales for February. These reports come after high-end retailer Nordstrom announced it would no longer carry her line in stores in early February, citing poor sales. Neiman Marcus and online stores Jet, Belk and ShopStyle followed, as many shoppers declared they would boycott any store that carried products bearing the first family’s name. Some sales are driven in counterprotest. Refinery29 reported in

February that the president’s eldest daughter’s namesake perfume was No. 1 on Amazon that month. As of Wednesday, the 3.4-ounce Ivanka Trump Eau de Parfum Spray still holds that spot. Many Amazon shoppers left positive reviews, too, claiming they bought the product without ever having smelled it, but did so to “support” the brand. One reviewer wrote Monday: “Bought this as my own small statement of, ‘Left, you have lost your d*** minds?’” Klem, a registered Democrat, said she’s dedicated to separating the brand from its founder, including any talks between the two. “I really like Ivanka. We’re business associates. We’re very close in a way,” Klem said in the interview. “So I feel like, while we’re not banned from speaking personally, I think it’s easier if we talk as little as possible.” ALEXIS SACHDEV

Jewish leaders urge schools, JCCs to assess safety amid wave of threats As a wave of bomb threats were made against Anti-Defamation League facilities in New York, Atlanta, Boston and Washington on Tuesday, organization officials said panic was the worst response — but preparation was key. Jewish leaders in New York are recommending all potential targets have a professional assessment of their institution’s safety protocols. That comes following the huge increase — 115 percent — in anti-Semitic hate crimes reported in New York so far this year. Those incidents have included vandalism, violence and bomb threats made to schools, synagogues and other Jewish institutions. “It’s about ensuring their base and their membership, and assuring that it’s safe to bring their children and the elderly, said Evan Bernstein, the ADL’s New York regional director. “It’s going back into the building and partici-

Bernstein added that some security could have eased because of a longstanding sense of security for Jews in New York. “There should be much more diligence around safety protocol,” he said. “Security for every institution is different — some have robust budgets and some are on

a shoestring — but what a professional assessment can bring are recommendations based on location, size and the building type.” Rabbi Mark Wildes, founder and director of the Manhattan Jewish Experience, said he is hopeful and confident that the NYPD and other city agencies are taking these threats seriously. Baby Boomers May Avoid Knee Surgery With Modern Arthritis Treatments Doctors say these two factors are the keys to knee arthritis treatment success and relieving pain without surgery By Matt Edgar America’s Health Writer New York City - Everyone has said it at one time or another. If I had only known about “this” sooner - things would be very different today. That’s what many knee arthritis pain sufferers are saying about this technology and treatment. “We all know that countless lives are being saved every year because of early detection and better treatment ” noted the clinic director at the NY Pain MD in New York City. “The same holds true for treating arthritis pain. I believe we are having so much success at NY Pain MD because of two factors: One is we are using advanced medical technology and treatments a lot of “If you have knee arthritis pain, viscosupplementation might be the answer you are looking for. The director believes one of the most important factors for the success of viscosupplementation is making sure you are getting it into the joint space precisely. That’s why the doctors at NY Pain MD use advanced imaging technology to apply Precision Arthritis Targeting during every treatment. A device called the "C-Arm" allows the doctor to see into the joint and actually watch the medicine be applied exactly where it is supposed to. Knee Pain Screenings Offered To Help Determine If New York Metro Area Residents Qualify For Popular Treatment Knee pain sufferers have limited time to claim knee pain screening to see if all-natural knee arthritis treatment might work for them If you qualify for this treatment, it might be one of the happiest days of your life. That’s because, for the past year and a half, hundreds NY Pain MD of knee pain sufferers have New York City. That’s when their specially trained-doctors added Hyalgan treatments to their already successful comprehensive knee pain relief program. Viscosupplementation is unique because - eventhough it is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company, it is NOT considered a drug because it is a natural substance with an incredible story.

Why So Many Want It You see, when you suffer with arthritis - the lubricatThis means instead of gliding smoothly - your bones start to rub and grind against each other. This causes a little pain in the beginning - but over time the pain steadily gets worse until it is excruciating.

Like “Joint Oil” Viscosupplementation works so well because it is like ‘joint oil.” It is a natural substance that contains one of the natural building blocks of the synovial fluid that lubricates your knee. Scientists and researchers discovered this natural building block to synovial fluid in the rooster’s comb - that big red thing on top of the roosters head. It is extracted from the roosters comb, purified and concentrated. They have also developed medical lubricants that are also natural but made a bit like yogurt and "cultured" into highly effective arthritis pain-fighting medical lubricants. When introduced directly into your knee joint, it is like squirting oil on a rusty door hinge. Viscosupplementation allows your joints to glide more smoothly eliminating a lot of the rubbing, grinding and pain.

Can Supplements Do The Same Thing? No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and other supplements are much different. You can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of unsubstantiated claims made by supplements to do what this advanced medical procedure does.

Why You Should Try This Even If You’ve Already Had Similar Treatments Without Results... “We have been able to help so many knee pain sufferers - even many who have already tried other treatments like Synvisc, Supartz, Orthovisc and even Hyalgan. This is because our treating doctors always use “Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology”. This allows us to place the Viscosupplementation exactly where is needs to be. Studies show doctors doing joint injections without technology can miss the joint up to 30% of the time.” noted the Director of Center NY Pain MD is a state of the art medical facility offering only the best technology.

Advanced Medical Technology Can Make All The Difference: T Ňuorososcopic imaging allows doctors to see directly into the knee joint so supposed to. Studies show that procedures done without this technology can miss the joint up to 30% of This is one reason NY Pain MD uses this P.A.T. Imaging Technology. with each and every treatment. And that’s not all “Every case is individual. Some patients get quite a bit of relief right away - others take a little more time. But most have been extremely happy. We’ve noted results lasting no less than 6 months for many but up to 2 years for some patients.. Patients who were suffering for years with bad knee pain are getting their lives back... going for walks again and exercising. It’s amazing to see. They tell all their friends - that’s why we are swarmed. After getting treatment and feeling better, many patients have decided to cancel their total knee replacement surgeries.” added the director.

Lottery begins for affordable units in new Harlem 125 building A rare, uninterrupted row of century-and-a-half-old brownstones once graced the block of East 126th Street between Madison and Park Avenues. But many of them sat vacant in recent years, their windows boarded up and adorned with graffiti. One of the buildings, located in the middle of the block, was deemed structurally unsound by the city in 2012. Its roof was caving in and its floors collapsing. The structure was replaced in late 2015 with a new modern, mixeduse rental building that extends through to 125th Street, despite arguments from local preservationists that this would destroy the historic block’s uniformity. The new building, designed by Kutnicki Bernstein Architects, is called

12 NEWS LIGHTS OUT Lady Liberty goes dark before International Women’s Day The night before thousands of women were expected to participate in #DayWithoutAWoman and International Women’s Day events, one of the most iconic women in America took a powerful stance. Or did she? Just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, New York’s Statue of Liberty, usually illuminated from below, went dark, save for her torch and crown. Social media, however, lit up

immediately with conspiracy theories. Some thought Lady Liberty was “standing with the resistance and going dark for #DayWithoutAWoman,” according to the Twitter account of the movement’s organizer, Women’s March, which also organized the worldwide event the day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration. “I’d like to think it’s a sign of the times,” @plumbum821 tweeted along with #MuslimBan, referencing President Donald Trump’s controversal travel ban

from mostly Muslim nations. Since being dedicated more than 130 years ago, the statue has always been a welcoming landmark for immigrants coming to America. “Isn’t this normally a sign in horror movies that shit is about to go down?” @sideofry wondered. Despite how perfectly fitting all of the theories swirling around may have been, the lights were back on by midnight, and the National Park Service, which manages the Statue of

Liberty, said on Facebook that the “outage was most likely due to work related to an ongoing project to activate a new emergency backup generator.” An exact cause of the outage is expected to come later and it most definitely will not include a political statement from Lady Liberty. “We don’t use the lighting system to back any particular cause,” Jerry Willis, a public affairs officer for the NPS told The Washington Post. More than 200 weapons were recovered. “In this unique case, we charged more defendants and recovered more firearms than in any other case in Brooklyn’s history,” acting District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said Wednesday in announcing the arrests. “We will go wherever we must, including other states, to continue fighting the scourge of firearms trafficking.” The two dozen gunrunning suspects, 22 of whom are residents of Virginia, have been charged with 627 counts of weapons offenses and conspiracy for trafficking guns intended for sale on Brooklyn streets, authorities said.

The weapons recovered during the course of the investigation include assault weapons such as AK-47s, AR-15s, Thomson Industries (aka tommy guns), Mossberg 715Ts and MAC-10s. Assorted handguns were seized, including a .45 caliber Desert Eagle 1911 and Glocks with extended ammunition magazines and 50-round ammunition drums. Gonzalez said that the defendants, many of whom are allegedly associated with Bloods gangs in Virginia and Brooklyn, funded “lavish lifestyles” complete with drugs, jewelry, clothing and sneakers. The defendants also sent money to associates in jail. In court-ordered wiretaps, the defendants can be heard mocking Virginia’s “weak gun laws,” the DA said. Police Commissioner James O’Neill called Operation Tidal Wave an example of the nation’s “serious gun-control problem.” “Over and over again, New York City finds itself the final destination for illegal firearms,” O’Neill continued. “Too often our citizens become victims of the associated gun violence. Our investigators and prosecutors will continue to relentlessly pursue those responsible for trafficking in illegal guns, wherever they are.”

14 NEWS POLITICS Senators ask if US paying to secure Trump property overseas Three U.S. senators asked the secretaries of State, Defense and Homeland Security on Wednesday if they were spending government resources to secure President Donald Trump’s properties around the world. In a letter, the three Democrats also asked the cabinet members whether they had been asked by the Trump Organization to protect its

properties, and whether extra funding would be requested to cover the costs. Trump’s continued ownership of the Trump Organization means the overseas properties are prime targets for terrorist attacks, which could directly impact Trump’s net worth and potentially “lead the country into new conflicts around the globe,” the senators wrote. A State Department official, speaking on background, said that privately owned U.S.

companies, such as the Trump Organization, are responsible for providing their own security for assets overseas. The Department of Homeland Security declined to comment on the questions in the letter. The Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment. Wednesday’s letter was the latest in a stream of Congressional correspondence calling for greater transparency and voicing concern about Trump’s

hundreds of companies and potential conflicts of interest posed by his business empire. The lawmakers who authored Wednesday’s letter — Senators Tom Udall, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Richard Blumenthal -— were among eight Democratic U.S. Senators who urged Trump and Secret Service Deputy Director William Callahan on Monday to release logs of visitors to the White House and Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. A federal judge on Wednesday said the state of Hawaii could file an amended complaint against President Donald Trump’s new executive order temporarily banning the entry of refugees and travelers from six Muslim-majority countries. U.S. District Court Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii said the state could add to its initial lawsuit, which had challenged Trump’s original ban signed in January. The state is claiming the revised ban signed by the president on Monday violates the U.S. Constitution. It is the first legal challenge to the revised order. The state of Hawaii will ask the court on Wednesday to put an emergency halt to Trump’s new order, according to a court schedule signed by the judge. A hearing is set for March 15, a day before the new ban is to go into effect. The revised travel order changed and replaced an original, more sweeping ban issued on Jan. 27 that caused chaos and protests at airports and was challenged in more than two dozen lawsuits around the country. A federal judge in Seattle put the first order on hold, in a decision upheld by an appeals court in San Francisco. The new order is much more narrowly

tailored. It keeps a 90-day ban on travel to the United States by citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, but excludes Iraq and applies the restriction only to new visa applicants. It also removed an indefinite ban on all refugees from Syria. Legal experts have said court challenges will be more difficult now because changes to the order give exemptions to more people. Hawaii claims its state universities would be harmed by the order because they would have trouble recruiting students and faculty. It also says the island state’s economy would be hit by a decline in tourism. Hawaii claims its state universities would be harmed by the order because they would have trouble recruiting students and faculty. It also says the island state’s economy would be hit by a decline in tourism. The court papers cite reports that travel to the United States “took a nosedive” after Trump’s actions. The state was joined by a new plaintiff named Ismail Elshikh, an American citizen from Egypt who is an Imam at the Muslim Association of Hawaii whose mother-in-law lives in Syria, according to the lawsuit. US weighs deploying up to 1,000 ‘reserve’ troops for ISIS fight The officials said the deployment would differ from the existing U.S. troop presence in Kuwait. President Donald Trump’s administration is weighing a deployment of up to 1,000 American soldiers to Kuwait to serve as a reserve force in the fight against Islamic State as U.S.-backed fighters accelerate the offensive in Syria and Iraq, U.S. officials told Reuters. Proponents of the option, which has not been previously reported, said

it would provide U.S. commanders on the ground greater flexibility to quickly respond to unforeseen opportunities and challenges on the battlefield. It would also represent a step away from standard practices under President Barack Obama’s administration by leaving the ultimate decision on whether to deploy some of those Kuwait-based reserve forces in Syria or Iraq to local commanders. “This is about providing options, said one U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. It was unclear whether the proposal had the sup-

port of U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who could opt to use other tools to give commanders more agility. Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis declined to comment on options being weighed by the Trump administration. Obama’s administration was often accused of micromanaging even the smallest tactical details about the fight against ISIS, weighing in on the use of helicopters or movement of small numbers of U.S. forces. It also set limits on U.S. deployments that would

be adjusted incrementally, a strategy meant to avoid mission creep by the military and prevent military moves that might seem good on the battlefield but which could have inadvertent diplomatic or political consequences. Such limits are now under scrutiny. The decision on whether to create a more rapidly deployable Kuwait-based force is part of the ongoing review of the United States’ strategy to defeat Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, where around 6,000 U.S. troops are deployed, largely in advisory roles, the officials said. FBI Director Comey at cyber conference: ‘You’re stuck with me’ FBI Director James Comey said he has no plans to step down anytime soon in a speech on Wednesday, days after he reportedly pushed back against President Donald Trump’s allegations that the Obama administration had tapped phones at Trump Tower. “You’re stuck with me for another six-and-a-half years, Comey said at a Boston College cyber security conference, indicating he expects to serve the remainder of his 10-year term. Comey did not speak with reporters during public appearances in Boston on Tuesday and Wednesday, ignoring questions about the wiretapping accusation that Trump made on Saturday without offering any evidence to support it.

Comey, who was appointed FBI director by Barack Obama in 2013, had urged Justice Department officials to refute Trump’s claims because it falsely insinuated the Federal Bureau of Investigation broke the law, U.S. officials have said. The department has not acted on his request. The White House said Monday that Trump still

has confidence in Comey despite his assertiveness in challenging Trump’s claim. Comey also reiterated a plea for technology companies to enable authorities to access encrypted data on mobile devices and in messaging apps. He said strong encryption had become more popular in recent years, particularly after former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden’s revelations about U.S. spying programs. The use of the technology for scrambling data has made it increasingly difficult for law enforcement to investigate crimes, even when authorities have court orders giving them permission to access data, he said. Think you would’ve been a good politician? You can now find out by taking a seat at first lady Dolley Madison’s dinner table — which has gotten some 21st-century updates. The interactive table is the showpiece of “Saving Washington,” the inaugural exhibit of the New-York Historical Society’s upcoming Center for Women’s History, a first-ever museum and educational center dedicated exclusively to women’s role and contributions. Through a recreation of the Madison-era White House, multimedia installations and more than 150 objects — from the musket balls made by women and children from the melted statue of King George III to housewares, guest lists and more — “Saving Washington” examines women’s political and social influence from the Revolutionary War through the mid-1800s, at a time when they didn’t even have the right to vote. About that table: The Founding Fathers may have had their fancy signatures and powdered wigs, but it was Madison

who helped unite the United States — and she did it with tea. “The Constitution was an abstraction; you can have a piece of paper that says ‘We the people,’ but that doesn’t make us ‘We the people,’” explains Louise Mirrer, president of the society. “She really invented the White House as a locus for people to come together from all parts of the country.” Those who know Madison probably only remember her for saving the

iconic portrait of George Washington before the White House was set on fire by the British during the War of 1812 — hence one meaning of the exhibition’s title. But before that, the “consummate unofficial politician” took to the work of nationbuilding with parties known as “Wednesday night squeezes” because people would fill the halls and rooms of the White House, which was open to anyone who wanted to come and meet each other and share their concerns in a bit of “informal diplomacy.”

If you go “Saving Washington” March 8-July 30 New-York Historical Society, 170 Central Park W. $20, nyhistory.org

“So you had rednecks from West Virginia and Boston and Philadelphia elite,” says Mirrer. “She really understood that the young nation needed a capital city, it needed a place where people would come together, and above all that the Constitution was forever going to be a piece of paper unless someone actually did the work to bring people together so they felt like ‘We the people.’” At the digital dinner table, two to four players are tasked with debating the issue of whether to fund Lewis and Clark’s exploration of the West. ScarJo officially files for divorce It’s official: Scarlett Johansson has filed for divorce from her husband of two years, hot French dude Romain Dauriac. The two have been separated since last summer. According to Page Six, the 32-year-old actress has gone so far as to sue Dauriac in Manhattan Supreme Court, saying that their marriage is irretrievably broken. Damn, girl! ScarJo is also requesting sole custody of the couple’s 3-year-old daughter, Rose. The not-that-woke lady recently decided that she and her husband actually didn’t have that much in common, which seems like something you should find out before you marry and or procreate with a person. But what do I know?

“It was fun, and I loved it, until it wasn’t. Drugs didn’t love me. They didn’t love my family. They definitely didn’t love

Because drugs and alcohol are powerful, but we are more powerful.” Look at you, Dushku. Dropping inspiring gems. Congratulations on your sobriety — for real.

Jennifer Garner wants Ben back Surprise, surprise: Jennifer Garner has decided to hold off on divorce proceedings from her estranged husband, Ben Affleck. I guess she didn’t hear about the return of the original Bennifer and their lukewarm, I mean, explosive!, chemistry. According to People, the actors, both 44, aren’t exactly back together, but they’ve decided to keep working on their marriage in a perpetual state of limbo. How modern! A source tells the magazine that Jen

According to Perez Hilton, the 36-year-old revealed she is a recovering alcoholic and addict, and has been sober for eight years. Speaking at the New Hampshire Youth Summit on Opioid Awareness, she told the audience that drugs were fun — until they weren’t.

Gather round, comrades. Eva Mendes would like to clear something up. You see, there’s a reason she didn’t join her long-term partner, Ryan Gosling, on the red carpet this awards season. Because when it comes down to it, she’s just a cool, down-to-earth, lovable homebody! Why didn’t I think of that? In an interview with Shape magazine, the 43-year-old actress admitted that being

called off the divorce because she just really wants things to work out with her very sad baby daddy. “There is always a chance of reconciliation. They love each other. They also really, really love their kids, and those kids love their parents.” If you need more proof of how badly

these two kind of want to be together, please consider this very telling anecdote from their son’s fifth birthday: “They had a cake. Everyone seemed happy.” Um, duh. Cake makes everybody happy. But cake can’t help a doomed marriage, so. Good luck or whatever.

Why Eva Mendes wasn’t at the Oscars at home is one of her greatest passions. “What people don’t know about me is that I love being home,” she says. “Instead of hitting the red carpet, I’d rather be with our girls.” Mendes and Gosling share two daughters: Esmeralda, 2, and Amada, 11 months. If she would have just said, “We are notoriously private and don’t want anybody in our business,” that would have been fine too, but whatever.

Kristen Stewart was good even in ‘Twilight’ The star has a new, arty film out, “Personal Shopper. So we look back at her big breakthrough. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

It’s not news anymore: Kristen Stewart is an acclaimed thespian. The last few years have seen the former Bella reborn, going from Twi-hard icon — loved and mocked in equal proportion — to a goddess of indies and even arty Euro movies. This week sees the arrival of “Personal Shopper, a mysterious ghost movie and her second with Olivier Assayas. The acclaimed French filmmaker previously directed her in “Clouds of Sils Maria, the performance that netted her a Cesar (the French Oscar) and told her haters they can officially go suck it. Here’s the thing, though: Everyone may agree K-Stew was terrific in “Still Alice, in “Certain Women, in “Cafe Society. But she’s always been great. As a kid she played Jodie Foster’s appropriately curt young daughter in “Panic Room, and she earned raves for a small role in “Into the Wild, one year before “Twilight came along. Even during her Twi-stint, she was an unusually thoughtful

dream girl in “Adventureland and a killer Joan Jett in “The Runaways. But we’ll go one further: She’s good in “Twilight, too. This isn’t a popular opinion. For five years, Stewart was an easy target — that awkward girl who looked out of place in an inane franchise. She mumbled her lines. She couldn’t close her mouth. She had to quiver uncontrollably over an albino vampire and a shirtless werewolf. She was, in short, a bad actress in the worst movies in the world. We won’t defend the

Thing is, Anna Kendrick isn’t the only decent thing in it. (Yes, Kendrick was in the “Twilight

movies. It’s easy to forget. She seems so above these things.) Stewart is good, too. Her turn is nowhere in the same universe as “Sils Maria, but the things that critics love about her — her clear intelligence, her hesitant-yet-forceful line readings, her ability to seem at once uneasy and cucumber-cool in front of the camera — are all over Bella. Watching the first one now, with a recent rash of terrific performances under her belt, it’s easier to see that she hasn’t improved as an actress; we’ve just figured out how to appreciate her

The first “Twilight is currently lives on Netflix Instant, as is “Sils Maria. She’s clearly better in “Sils Maria, but she’s thrilling in “Twilight, too, giving a fool thing much more credibility than it deserves. New York is finally getting a branch of conveyor belt restaurant YO! Sushi. EVA KIS @thisiskis

As much as New Yorkers love a food gimmicks, it seems improbable that we didn’t have a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. That changes on March 16, when the first New York location of British chain YO! Sushi opens at 23 W. 23rd St. in the Flatiron District, next to Eataly. You simply walk in, get seated and start grabbing color-coded plates of sushi, specialty rolls, sashimi, salads and anything else that looks good. The color tells you the price, between $3.50 and $8, each a generous portion — three plates should be more than

Keep it movin’ enough for lunch. Each dish is time-stamped; the belt is checked every 15 minutes to make sure raw fish spends no more than an hour in transit, vegetable dishes three hours. “We’re trying to make Manhattan different, so it is about celebrating all the different kinds of food and regionality and the izakaya spirit of

The wide-rang-

Something surreal is blooming in Central Park: Bouquets of what look like flowers morph into insects upon closer examination, while pigeons turn the table on cats, carrying them away to the heavens. It’s not an alternate universe — just the one created by Greenpointbased artist Zane York, whose naturalist images make up Nature Morte, the spring exhibition at the Parks Department’s Arsenal Gallery. “There’s definitely an oddness about his work,” says Jennifer Lantzas, deputy director of public art in the city’s parks. “When you’re first coming up on one of his works, you think you know what you’re going to expect,

and then it totally throws you for a loop.” Styled after Dutch masters like Johannes Vermeer, York’s work infuses their trademark melancholy with flashes of dark humor in the spirit of Hieronymus Bosch. What gets Lantzas particularly is that painting of the flying cats, called “Ascension,” which she describes as “an absurdist image but at the same time, the way that it’s been painted in a circular canvas, it almost feels like it could be a traditional ceiling mural that you’d see in a Catholic church.” Themes of mortality and transience make it the perfect exhibit for spring — the paintings are going on view tonight, when the natural

The irony of YO! might turn out to be that while conveyor belt sushi is meant to get you in and out quickly in Japan, New Yorkers may find themselves lingering over the novelty of the presentation. The soothing trundle of plates in front of you — the conveyor belt runs past every seat — and the 10 chefs constantly preparing new dishes in the open kitchen that runs the length of the restaurant can turn into a leisurely meal. Plus, there’s bottomless miso soup ($3.50!) and a full bar including cocktails and Japan’s iconic One Cup Sake. And we haven’t even gotten to the small mountain of shaved ice, syrup, condensed milk, ice cream and fresh fruit that is their kakigori dessert, as well as rotating pastries of the day. If only our stomachs could keep up with that conveyor belt. parks and their history. “New Yorkers, we know our parks, but we may not stop and think about what impact they’re having on our lives,” Lantzas says of the gallery’s mission. “So we’re asking artists to make us think a little bit deeper about our public spaces and whether that’s through just being aware of nature and what’s around us and thinking about it just a little bit differently, hopefully making people pause and see that we have more to add to the conversation at the Parks Department than just, ‘Let’s keep our trees green.’” As with all Arsenal exhibits, “Nature Morte” is free to attend. Fun in the dark Some of the world’s best experiences don’t start until after the sun goes down. Bioluminescent bays When the Spanish first encountered Puerto Mosquito in Vieques, Puerto Rico, they attributed the underwater neon-blue lights to the devil; a more plausible explanation is dinoflagellate, a micro-organism that glows in response to movement. Visitors can experience the bioluminescent bay by booking a kayak tour after dark.

ADDING MARSHALL IS NICE, BUT O-LINE HELP IS MORE IMPORTANT Marshall means absolutely nothing. Zip. Zilch. The old nada. The work isn’t done here. Now the Giants had to bring on board Marshall, it is a deal that made too much sense, a discount that adds up to a bargain for general manager Jerry Reese. But if the rest of the offseason isn’t a success in beefing up that line — b and a the Giants struck out o several times in free agency a year f ago there — then this hype about Marshall means nothing. And then nothing will be the epitaph on the e Giants’ 2017 season.

KRISTIAN DYER OPINION Kristian Dyer is a columnist and NFL beat writer for Metro New York. @KristianRDyer

Brandon Marshall to the New York Giants is a big thing for both the player and his new team, but despite the massive news, a Super Bowl is not in the picture … not yet and not without some more work to be done for the Giants. The signing of Marshall, one of the league’s truly “bigly” wide receivers enhances not only the options down the field for quarterback Eli Manning, but helps take the pressure off of star target Odell Beckham Jr. Last year, Beckham continued to face double teams as defenses shifted toward him in an attempt to neutralize the team’s one true playmaker. In Marshall, the Giants are adding a red zone threat to an offense that had trouble punching it into the end zone last year. He’s also a big target, a possession receiver just two years removed from one of the best seasons of his 11 years in the league. He changes the offense and adds a new dimension to the playbook. He also is a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators. But what Marshall can’t do is protect his new quarterback and no amount of shiny new toys for Manning will help the Giants if he’s making throws from his back like he had to in 2016. The offensive line was among the worst in the league for the Giants last year, a unit that really was a hodgepodge of talent. Ereck Flowers, set

to enter his third year in the NFL and a former first round pick, has been an unmitigated disaster. Up and down the line there have been injuries and struggles. There is no depth, and the talent level of the unit is easily bottom five in the league. Marshall is a nice addition, a player who wanted to stay in the market after two years with the New York Jets. He can further his television ambitions with the Giants being a stone’s throw from New York City and he play for a winner. What he won’t be doing is winning a playoff game if this line doesn’t get better. The Giants are set to [over]pay Jason Pierre-Paul top money after placing the franchise tag on him, and keep in mind they need cap flexibility to resign Beckham either this year or next offseason. After all the matriculating is done, there’s not a ton of money to go around on offensive linemen and sitting at No. 23 in this spring’s NFL draft, there’s certainly no guarantee that there will be a highend tackle or guard avail-

able who can step right in and start. Management and the coaching staff also must be willing to move Flowers after a disastrous two seasons at left tackle.

Perhaps on the right side of the line he can excel. At the very least, it might hide his deficiencies. Without at least two quality starters added to the line, the signing of

Aries Attend a function that is geared toward education and you will discover a way to expand your expertise and diversify your professional options.

Libra Form an alliance with someone who supports you. Don’t make an impulsive decision that could affect your living arrangements or plans.

Taurus Focus on what you can get done without the help of others. Physical labor or exercise will ease your stress and help you put emotional matters in perspective.

Scorpio Check out your options, but don’t walk away from one situation until you have a secure hold on where you are heading next. Impulse will lead to uncertainty.

Gemini Beautify your surroundings and pay more attention to how you present yourself. A trendy new look will lift your spirits and encourage you to participate more in events.

Sagittarius Display your expertise and ability to get things done. Your excellent work ethic will promote advancement. Be prepared to counterattack a jealous competitor.

Cancer Question what others ask of you. Don’t feel sorry for someone trying to take advantage of you. Stay focused on your responsibilities and doing the best you can.

Capricorn You’ll be tempted to follow someone else’s lead. Before you jump in, consider what’s being offered and what’s expected of you in return.

Leo Taking a trip, signing up for a course or spending time with someone you love is favored. Making a physical change will boost your confidence and result in compliments.

Aquarius Take time to pamper yourself or update your appearance. Nurture an important relationship by sharing your plans and feelings. Romance is encouraged.

Virgo You can spin things in your favor if you offer practical solutions to financial, legal or medical issues that develop when dealing with a partner or institutions.

Pisces Once you set a goal, it’s a matter of putting your plan in motion. Your vision will be spot-on, and your ability to follow through unprecedented. EUGENIA LAST
