LAWMAKERS PRESSURE FEDERAL RESERVE RAISES RYAN FORESEES NO MAJOR CHANGES IN HEALTH PLAN COMEY ON TRUMP CLAIM RATES AS JOB GAINS

1

A key Republican lawmaker said he did not believe the Obama administration wiretapped Trump Tower during the 2016 election campaign, adding to pressure on FBI Director James Comey to provide evidence supporting or debunking Republican President Donald Trump’s claim. “We don’t have any evidence that that took place,” House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes

told a news conference. “I don’t think there was an actual tap of Trump Tower.” Trump made the claim on Twitter on March 4 without providing evidence. Nunes’ congressional committee is one of at least four that have added the startling accusation to investigations of possible Russian meddling in the election campaign. REUTERS

The U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Wednesday for the second time in three months, a move spurred by steady economic growth, strong job gains and confidence that inflation is rising to the central bank’s target. The decision to lift the target overnight interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 0.75 percent to 1.00 percent marked one of the Fed’s

most convincing steps yet in the effort to return monetary policy to a more normal footing. However, the Fed’s policy-setting committee did not flag any plan to accelerate the pace of monetary tightening. Although inflation is “close” to the Fed’s 2 percent target, it noted that goal was “symmetric,” indicating a possible willingness to allow prices to rise at a slightly faster pace. REUTERS

House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said the major elements of the Republican health care overhaul plan backed by President Trump will remain intact despite conservative opposition to a bill whose prospects remain up in the air. The White House and Ryan struggled to shore up support among Republican lawmakers for the legislation ahead of a key hurdle in the House Budget

Committee on Thursday. Vice President Mike Pence was set to met with conservative House lawmakers and then the entire Republican House membership. Ryan, who unveiled the legislation last week and is its main champion in Congress, said he was open to making “improvements and refinements.” REUTERS

FLA. AIRPORT SHOOTER MENTALLY FIT FOR TRIAL

4

An Iraq war veteran accused of killing five people in a shooting at a Florida airport this year appears mentally fit to stand trial despite psychiatric health issues, a federal judge said. U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom said she would not order a mental competency evaluation for Esteban Santiago after his lawyers said he was taking prescribed anti-psychotic medication and participating in

his defense. “He has been increasingly engaged and present during each of his sessions with his lawyers,” said Bloom, who sits in the Southern District of Florida in Miami. Santiago, 26, was diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder after his arrest, according to court documents. Authorities say he opened fire in the baggage claim area of the Fort Lauderdale airport on Jan. 6. REUTERS

WELCOME TO METRO.US! Another day, another “fake news” rant from the commander-in-tweet. This time, his target was Rachel Maddow and an investigative journalist who obtained Donald Trump’s 2005 tax returns. (“A reporter, who nobody ever heard of,” by Trump’s standards.) But the White House verified the numbers: Trump paid nearly $38 million in taxes that year. So who’s lying? The president’s de facto landlord? Or that no-name journalist, who’s known Trump for two decades? Read more about this headscratcher at metro.us/news

Galileo, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai. They were all considered “rule breakersâ€? of their time, initially punished for their beliefs but ultimately celebrated as trail-blazing heroes. Now, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab wants to honor the next generation of rule breakers with a $250,000 “Disobedience Award.â€? LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, who is a member of the Media Lab’s advisory council, donated the cash prize, which is intended to attract nominees from around the globe. The new award will go to an individual â€” or group â€” who engages in “extraordinary disobedience for the benefit of society.â€? Nominees for the award can be from the U.S. or anywhere in the world, but must adhere to the principles of “nonviolence, creativity, courage and taking responsibility for one’s actions.â€? “Questioning authority and thinking for yourself is an essential component of science, of civil rights, of society,â€? MIT Media Lab director Joi Ito said in a  video announcing the competition. “At some level, disobedience is at the root of this creativity.â€? The cash prize comes at a particularly relevant time in the U.S., given the current political climate. Since the election of President Donald Trump, tens of thousands of people

have taken to the streets to protest his travel ban, his administration’s stance on climate change, science and health care, as well as his personal statements on women. Inspiration for the prize, conceived of last year, was more a reaction to global unrest and division than a direct answer to Trump, said Ethan Zuckerman, director of the Center for Civic Media at the MIT Media Lab. He noted recent instances of disobedience, “from government officials defying orders from the White House, to President Trump’s very campaign, which could be thought of as disobedient to existing and established political orders.â€? But those weren’t directly connected to the award, he said. The individuals whose principled positions helped inspire the award include the Pakistani women’s rights advocate Malala Yousafzai, the Russian rock group and activists Pussy Riot, and the Chinese artist and dissident, Ai Weiwei. Located on the MIT campus, the Media Lab also welcomed nominees involved in science, culture, politics or other areas — as long as they find a “fundamental issue on which they must act.â€? On its website, it offers up 21 people through history who serve as examples of courageous dissenters. The lab, like the award, is a little unconventional. The research and design institution has used video, holography, electronic music, graphic design and cognition technology to study the way people think, express, and communicate ideas, and explore new scientific frontiers. Nominations, which can be made online, opened this week, and will be accepted through May 1. The winner will be announced in July.

“Questioning authority and thinking for yourself is an essential component of science, of civil rights, of society. MIT Media Lab director Joi Ito

The Citgo sign is here to stay. The imposing fixture of Boston’s city skyline has hovered above Kenmore Square since 1965, but its fate was questioned when Boston University sold the Beacon Street building that houses it earlier this year. On Wednesday, Mayor Marty Walsh announced the building’s new owners, New Yorkbased development firm Related Beal, and Citgo had struck a deal ensuring the sign will blink on above Boston for decades to come. “The Citgo sign has become an important part of the community and I am delighted that both sides were able to agree on terms that will allow the sign to stay where it is,” Walsh said. The terms of the deal were not announced Wednesday, but the petroleum company paid

$250,000 a year to lease space for the sign from Boston University. Related Beal was asking for as much as 10 times that amount, The Boston Globe reported earlier this month. The city was not directly involved in the negotiations, but Walsh met with both parties, lobbying for a permanent place for the sign in Kenmore Square. Related Beal has in-

dicated it has plans for major developments at the Beacon Street site, and the Boston Landmarks Commission has been studying a request to make the sign an official city landmark, which could afford it extra protections. It earned “pending designation” status last summer. Kimberly Sherman Stamler, president of Related Beal, said she is pleased the sign will re-

main in place. “We look forward to again collaborating with the city of Boston on plans for the redevelopment of Kenmore Square and to bringing increased economic activity, hundreds of jobs and a marquee office location to the area,” she said. The Citgo Petroleum Corp. is a fuel industry company based in Houston.

Pro-pot lobby prepared to spend more to defend Massachusetts law State lawmakers have already started making changes to law passed by voters in November.

Marijuana advocates spent millions of dollars to put a legal marijuana law in place in Massachusetts last year, and indicated Monday they are willing to spend more to protect the law approved by almost 1.8 million voters. Beacon Hill leaders have made clear they intend to change the law — parts of which took effect in December, the rest delayed six months by the House, Senate and governor. The committee in charge of making alterations to it is scheduled to hold its first hearing Monday. Jim Borghesani, the

communications director for the successful Yes on 4 campaign who now works with the Marijuana Policy Project, said the advocacy group is prepared to spend money to make the case that legislative changes violate the voterapproved law. “There is a chance on that, Borghesani said when asked by a reporter if MPP might spend money on a “voter persuasion effort. “We’ve already spent some money on social media targeting, which we think has been very effective; letting some members know exactly how their constituents feel. MPP is a 22-year-old organization focused solely on ending marijuana prohibition. MPP has three separate organizations focused on lobbying and ballot initiatives, education, and a political action committee that donates

to congressional candidates. The organizations have a combined budget that usually exceeds $9 million. The policy project has about 40 employees and has lobbyists on retainers in state capitals.

While Senate President Stanley Rosenberg and House Speaker Robert DeLeo were contemplating which legislators to appoint to the new Joint Committee on Marijuana Policy, he said, legaliza-

tion backers focused a stream of social media messages at them in an effort to influence the decisions. “And you might see some other actions taken, Borghesani added.

“But until we see what comes out of the committee, we’ll have to wait and see. MPP gave more than $350,000 to the Yes on 4 group since mid-2014, according to state campaign finance records. At the end of 2016, Yes on 4 reported having $13,153 cash on hand. Of greatest concern, Borghesani said, are changes to the law that would “violate the will of the voters. Among those he listed as problematic Monday were allowing marijuana establishments to be prohibited from a town by a vote of the selectmen rather than town referendum, changing the legal age to buy, possess and use marijuana, and reducing the amount of marijuana an adult can grow at home. Target’s Boston neighborhoods T-shirt is full of disappointment Southie isn’t spelled with a “Y.â€? Target learned that lesson the hard way this week after coming out with a new Boston neighborhoods T-shirt. The shirt featured a navy blue map of 15 neighborhoods, which seems a little off, considering Boston.gov lists 23 official Boston neighborhoods. Besides misspelling Southie, the map also messed up Jamaica Plain, calling it “Jamaca Plain.â€?

Whatever cartographers assembled this map of Boston hoods also took it upon themselves to do a little redistricting. According to the T-shirt Beacon Hill, Chinatown, Downtown, North End, and West End merged into one big neighborhood, now known as Central. It could actually be Charlestown Central though, as the T-shirt omits a dividing line. Oh yeah, and sorry, but Allston, Bay Village,

and Mission Hill didn’t make the cut. Target has pulled the shirts off shelves and taken down online sales, according to Boston.com. “We will be pulling that T-shirt from our assortment,â€? Jessica Carlson, a spokeswoman for Target, told Boston.com. “We apologize for any disappointment this may have caused.â€? Bostonians were quick to point out the mistakes on Twitter. ERIN TIERNAN

Jesse James inspires with stupid words Jesse James — who supposedly is a business man and television personality — is talking about his long ago marriage to Sandra Bullock with The Daily Mail (The couple divorced in 2012, after some of James’ mistresses came out about being his side pieces). And trust me, he doesn’t come off sounding like a good dude at all. Here’s a quick lil’ guide to all the stupid things he word vomited. 1. “Yeah, I did cheat on my wife. I stood up … and apologized.” OK, sure. I’ll give him this one. 2. “Both women and men cheat … it’s a part of life.” I mean, yes, that’s true. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be. Unless you choose for it to be. Which is something you did, my dude.

3. “The easy insult is like, ‘Oh, well you cheated on Sandra Bullock.’ That’s the world’s easiest comeback.” Is it an insult if it’s just a fact of life, though? Methinks no. 4. “It’s like people love to see you fall. And the farther you get, the higher you get the more they love it.” I love it when a grown man blames everyone else for his problems. Responsibility — who needs it?! So just in case that was too long and you didn’t read: Sandra Bullock’s ex-husband is gross and thinks cheating is a chill, cool thing to do. And he’s totally over the scandal of him cheating on her, which is why he’s still talking about it seven years later. What an inspiration.

Hilary Duff just figured out dating is terrible Hilary Duff is speaking out about divorce, co-parenting and dating, and now she knows what all of us knew already: It’s not always a gay old time. The “Younger” actress admits to Redbook she’s used to it now, but divorce is still a major drag. Duh! “Some of my friends tell me, ‘God, it must be so nice, you get a break from your kid because you share him,’” Duff says. “I’m divorced and it sucks. Well, it did suck for a while; now

it’s just normal.” Um, OK! The 29-year-old, who is, for the record, not single, also laments that dating in L.A. is the worst. “I never think being single sucks until I go out in L.A. with my girlfriends and the options are terrible. I really attract the old men!” Just so you know, Duff is dating a musician named Matthew Koma right now. He’s 29, which is just prehistoric, apparently. I’m assuming he’s involved in some sort of mystical Benjamin Button situation.

Lola Kirke is mad at Taylor Swift Actress Lola Kirke — star of “Mozart in the Jungle,” younger sister of Domino and Jemima — is fed up. The outspoken 26-yearold thinks that Taylor Swift’s lack of political stance in 2016 basically helped elect Donald Trump. Because if you have a platform, you should dang well use it. Chatting with Vogue, she elaborated. “For me, it’s really important to elevate voices and causes … I definitely think that there are certain celebrities who really could offer more help… and don’t,” Kirke continued.

Thank God ‘Doctor Who’ is back Geek Girl in Hollywood

JENNA BUSCH

Gosh, I’ve missed “Doctor Who”! I’ve missed it in the way I miss having a “Star Trek” series on TV. (Please get “Star Trek: Discovery” ready to go!) I know “Doctor Who” hasn’t been off for that long in the grand scheme of things, but it’s far longer than I would’ve liked. BBC America just released a trailer for the season featuring the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi), his new companion, Bill

(Pearl Mackie), and assistant Nardole (Matt Lucas). The tagline is, “This is the gateway to everything that ever was or ever can be.” Ah, the TARDIS. If you’ve never seen the show — and guys, it’s been around for 50 years — it’s about an alien who time travels and takes (mostly) human companions with him around time and space. He has two hearts and the ability to regenerate into a new body (the way they dealt with needing new actors to play the role). Seriously though, even if you just start with the reimagined series, it’s worth it. That’s how I got into it.

“Doctor Who,” Season 10, starring Peter Capaldi, premieres Saturday, April 15 at 9 p.m. on BBC America, followed by the premiere of the new spin-off, “Class.” BBC AMERICA

After years of watching, doing a number of aftershows about “Doctor Who” and co-writing chapters for the book “Doctor Who Psychology: A Madman With a Box,” I’d say I’m pretty familiar with this show. Certainly millions of you are. The reason I love it, though, is that it’s pure fantasy with a message. There is

nothing they can’t invent, despite having rules in the universe. There aren’t a lot of shows out there that run on pure imagination. Want to punch Hitler? Check. Ride a dinosaur? Check. Deal with homophobia? Here’s a quote from Madame Vastra: “Good evening. I’m a lizard woman from the dawn of time, and this is

my wife.” I’ve missed watching the way someone who has experienced planets, aliens, war, peace and the loss of friends, the betrayal of others and the meeting of brand new ones looks at the world. I’ve missed seeing a creature who loves humanity despite all of our flaws, and hearing about current

“Like Taylor f—g Swift, who may as well have voted for Trump, as far as I’m concerned, by not doing anything.” Oooh, Swift. Ya burnt! The youngest Kirke definitely has a point, but to be fair, the 27-year-old pop star usually only cares about a cause if it benefits her professionally. Like feminism, for example. Feminism helps Taylor Swift sell records, but voicing support for Black Lives Matter or Planned Parenthood probably wouldn’t, ya dig? Why even bother!? So yeah, I’m firmly #TeamLola on this one.

events from a man who knows better than anyone that everything passes. It’s beautiful to watch someone who should be so jaded still work to feel attachment to people. It’s a mirror for all of us, trying not to be defeated, despite what’s happening in the world. There was an episode last season when the Doctor experiences the loss of a close friend. His journey though grief, physically manifested as working his way through rock, over and over again for millions of years, is what grief feels like to us. It feels like it takes forever to get through, and we watch that literally happen for the Doctor. It’s cathartic. I’ve missed you, Doctor. I’ve missed seeing humanity through your eyes. Welcome back.

Mischa Barton fights release of sex tape Mischa Barton can’t catch a break. This time? Someone is shopping around a sex tape featuring the troubled star — with a starting price of $500,000. Too bad you can’t actually put a price on privacy and other people respecting you enough to not secretly record you having sex. The 31-year-old has claimed the tape

is revenge porn, as it was filmed without her consent. And now, her lawyer is speaking out, too. “Ms. Barton does not consent to any disclosure of such images, Lisa Bloom wrote in a statement. “Revenge pornography is a form of sexual assault, and it is also a crime and a civil wrong in California. And we will not stand for it.

NOT

This is pretty disgusting. And frankly, Barton has been through enough. She died really tragically on “The O.C, and also, just last month she bizarrely crashed her U-Haul into her new apartment building. And there was that whole thing where she claimed she was drugged with GHB, too. I wish she had better friends.

Even if bar crawls and club bangers aren’t your thing, St. Patrick’s Day in Boston doesn’t have to be just corned beef and cabbage. (Though it helps.)

Sam Adams Brewery will kick of festivities a little early, with a Thursday night pregame before the pregame affair. For $10, you’ll get a savory hand pie from the Roving Lunch-

box, plus five 7-ounce samples, including the brewery’s rare Black Harbor Stout, a maltychocolatey-peppery beer exclusively aged in Utopias barrels. March 16, 5:30-8:30 p.m., 30 Germania St., Boston, eventbrite.com Night Shift in Everett will team up with Daddy’s Bonetown Burgers for a night of updated Irish nosh (think: corned beef & colcannon egg rolls) and festivities at their taproom. The Irish American Police Officers Association Pipes & Drums and Somerville bluegrass band

Sam Reid & the Riot Act will both perform live; so be sure to wear your dancing shoes. March 17, 5-11 p.m., 87 Santilli Highway, Everett The South End’s Beehive is partnering with Harpoon Brewery for a night of boozy fun. The Thursday night dinner and live show will feature traditional Cornish pasties and shepherd’s pie a la cart, with a live performance from Galway’s Katie McD from 8:30 p.m. to midnight. March 16, 5 p.m.-1 a.m., 541 Tremont St., 617-4230069 Fenway’s Cask n’

The morning after Coppersmith in Southie will offer a traditional Irish breakfast to soothe post-Friday night hangovers all weekend long. The service features black and white sausages, grilled tomatoes, baked beans, fried eggs and Irish bacon — which is meatier and leaner than the greasy, crispy slabs found on your turkey club. Additionally, sweet potato hash browns and Jameson-themed specials will also be offered just for the weekend. 40 W. Third St., South Boston, 617-658-3452

Flagon will offer the traditional boiled dinner (corned beef, etc.) through March 19, while also serving up greenhued beverages through the weekend. Try the

A humorous swing, from a major player A lot has happened to Jane Eaglen since her American debut with the Boston Pops in 1992. The English soprano embarked on a prestigious, prolific international career. Her interpretations of the works of Richard Wagner defined her generation. Two decades at the top, four solo albums and 10 complete opera recordings later, Eaglen took another star turn — this time as a teacher, making stops in Seattle, Ohio and, finally, at Boston’s own New England Conservatory in 2015. Enter Boston Lyric Opera. Eaglen’s connections to the artistic

administration at BLO date back to her time with the Scottish Opera in Glasgow. And while she devotes a significant amount of energy to her full time gig at NEC, and to her responsibilities as artistic director at Baldwin-Wallace University in Ohio, her passion for performance has not waned. Thus, when Eaglen was approached to play Mother Goose in BLO’s upcoming adaptation of Stravinsky’s classic, “The Rake’s Progress,” there was little hesitation. “I was born to play a brothel madame,” she jokes.

line Ave., Boston, casknflagon.com Aeronaut Brewing Co. in Somerville has a two-day celebration on the 17 and 18 that also serves as a fundraiser for the Irish International Immigrant Center. Trad/ contemporary Irish band Slainte is set to perform Friday night, while Irish dancers will kick off festivities Saturday afternoon. A screening of trailers from the upcoming Irish Film Festival will be played, while the brewery will also release its first Irish stout, 1916. 14 Tyler St., Somerville, aeronautbrewing.com

It’s perspectivist humor from an artist who, come March 12, will undoubtedly be one of the biggest names on the Cutler Majestic stage. “I’m used to singing operas in which I sing for about six hours,” Eaglen laughs. “In this, I only have about 30 words. So

it’s very different.” And what a 30 words they must be, if BLO is heralding Eaglen as the show’s star turn. Eaglen plays Mother Goose, the character with whom protagonist Tom Rakewell famously stays the night in a London brothel. Among the

many liberties BLO takes with Stravinky’s famous opera in three acts — this iteration is as much about Stravinsky as it is about the play, with Stravinsky appearing on stage throughout — ornamenting Mother Goose to reflect Eaglen’s star power is perhaps its most

glorious innovation. “It’s fun,” Eaglen continues. “There’s a lot of humor in the show. It’s a slightly more humorous character than I’m used to playing — with an extremely amazing costume and an extremely amazing wig.” If infidelity, a bearded woman (one of Rakewell’s love interests) and a generational opera talent weren’t enough to push tickets, BLO has added an insurance policy: a generational opera talent in a generational wig. 16 TRAVEL in 1824, the Montreal St. Patrick’s Day Parade has never been cancelled, regardless of poor weather in past years. The festivities take place on the Sunday before St. Patrick’s Day and includes floats, bands and plenty of costumes.

We round up the world’s best St. Paddy’s Day celebrations.

New York City The country’s (and the world’s) largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration attracts over 2 million people for the city’s grand parade on March 17. There are no floats or cars allowed in the parade, which features bands, bagpipers and dancers, and typically between 150,000 to 250,000 participants.

Dublin Of course, Dublin hosts one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations: five days filled with boat races, the Irish Beer & Whiskey Festival, music and street performances, and a spectacular parade. This year the festival runs March 16-19. The parade, which takes place on St. Patrick’s Day, attracts about half a million spectators to watch the procession from Parnell Square to St.

season. On the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day, more than 400,000 people gather along the Chicago River to watch 45 pounds of vegetable dye turn the murky river a bright green. Even more spectators gather for the city’s parade at noon.

Montreal Since its inauguration

Another place often referred to as “the Emerald Isle,” this island in the British West Indies is the only place outside of Ireland where St. Patrick’s Day is considered a public holiday. To celebrate, the country has a 10-day festival, which has included a St. Patrick’s Day dinner, a Kite Festival and performances by the Emerald Community Singers Irish Cabaret.

Savannah With one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the world, Savannah’s festivities draw more than 300,000 people each year. The annual parade will feature horses and a variety of floats March 17. The city’s festivities also include a celebration on River

Street, with vendors and live musical performances, and the Tara Feis Irish Celebration, with crafts, storytellers and musical performances.

Munich With one of the more recently established St. Patrick’s Day traditions (the parade dates to 1995), Munich’s festivities are gaining more traction each year. With about 15,000 participants, the city shuts down Leopold Strasse in order to celebrate the Irish holiday.

Buenos Aires Not only is Buenos Aires home to the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration in South America, but the city is home to the fifth-largest Irish community in the world. The result is a St. Patrick’s Day street festival taking up 10 blocks along Reconquista Street, with music and dancing. And their annual parade, which ends at the Plaza San Martin, features Celtic musical selections and a leprechaun costume contest.

March Madness: 5 can’t-miss games to watch on Day 1 Make sure to catch these five matchups, even if you’re sneaking it from work. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

sports@metro.us

With games on all day and night on four different channels, everyone knows that the first two days of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament are some of the best in the entire sports year. With the First Four completed on Tuesday and Wednesday, things start for real on Thursday afternoon as No. 12 Princeton meets No. 5 Notre Dame in Buffalo, New York, at 12:15 p.m. on CBS in the opener. The Tigers (23-6) went 14-0 in the Ivy League then survived overtime versus Penn and they beat Yale in the inaugural Ivy League

Tournament (four teams). Overall, they have won 19 games in a row. The Irish (25-9) seem to be peaking at the right time as they advanced to the ACC Tournament championship game before losing to Duke (27-8). At least one 12 seed is always a good bet to pick up a win, so don’t be shocked if Princeton at least makes Notre Dame sweat. The No. 1 seed in the West, Gonzaga (32-1), tips off against No. 16 South Dakota State (18-16) in Salt Lake City, Utah, at 2 p.m. on TBS. It looked like the Bulldogs might have the albatross of an unbeaten record coming into the tournament before a late-season loss to BYU. It’s tough to count on Gonzaga though, since not only was the West Coast Conference particularly weak this year outside of them and St.

Mary’s (28-4) but they have never reached a Final Four in program history. Could this finally be their time? Not since Florida in 2006 and 2007 has a team won back-to-back national championships, but many think that Villanova (313), the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, can do it out of the East region. They begin in Buffalo (7:10 p.m., CBS) with a matchup against No. 16 Mount St. Mary’s (20-15) who edged New Orleans (20-12), 6766, on Tuesday in the First Four. The Wildcats boast senior shooting guard Josh Hart (18.9 points per game, 6.5 rebounds per game), sophomore point guard Jalen Brunson (14.8 points per game, 4.2 assists per game) and senior small forward Kris Jenkins (13.4 points per game) who beat North Carolina for the title last season with his buzzer-beating

Top seeds Gonzaga and Villanova showcase a busy ďŹ rst day of March Madness action Thursday.

3-pointer. No. 13 Vermont (295), champions of America East, is an intriguing team since they come in riding the longest win streak in the country at 21 games. They’ll meet No. 4 Purdue (25-7) who is generally regarded as the best team in the Big 10 (which was very down this year). If history is any indication,

the Catamounts have a chance since they were also a 13-seed when they knocked off No. 4 Syracuse in 2005, the signature win in school history. America fell in love with No. 14 Florida Gulf Coast (26-7) in 2013 when they reached the Sweet 16. Dunk City is back in the tournament for the second straight year and

they get to face No. 3 Florida State (25-8) in Orlando (9:20 p.m., TNT). Last season they crushed Fairleigh Dickinson in the First Four before losing to No. 1 seed North Carolina. Beware the athletic and high-flying Eagles, that’s why the Seminoles will be a trendy pick for a higher seed to go down in their first game.
