47 MORE SKULLS FOUND FCC: MEDIA IS NOT THE IN MEXICO MASS GRAVES ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

Investigators unearthed the skulls of 47 more suspected victims of Mexico’s drug war in Veracruz state, just days after uncovering 250 skulls at a separate mass grave used by drug cartels, the state’s attorney general said. Veracruz, on Mexico’s Gulf coast, has long been a stomping ground for criminal gangs, who fight over lucrative drug and migrant smuggling routes. Giving details on the latest grisly find, Jorge Winckler

said the skulls and remains of multiple body parts were unearthed from eight unmarked graves, clustered in a 120 square meter area, about 6 miles from the town of Alvarado. So far, Winckler said, investigators had positively identified one three-person family, missing since September 2016, and the remains of two other men. REUTERS

The head of the Federal Communications Commission told the U.S. Congress he did not agree that “the media is the enemy of the American people” and said he would act independently of the White House on media-related matters. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, whom President Donald Trump has nominated to a new five-year term as head of the body that regulates broadcast television,

radio and other media outlets, made his comments in a letter dated Friday and released on Monday. Pai, a Republican, had refused to say during a Senate hearing earlier this month whether he agreed with Trump’s comments on the media. In February, Trump tweeted: “The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @CNN, @ NBCNews and many more) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American people. SICK.” REUTERS

U.S. authorities are planning to ban passengers traveling on certain U.S.bound foreign airline flights from carrying into the cabin larger electronic devices in response to an unspecified terrorism threat, U.S. officials told Reuters. The new rule is expected to be announced as early as Monday night by the Department of Homeland Security, the officials said, adding that it had been under consideration

since the U.S. government learned of a threat several weeks ago. The source said the rule would cover a dozen foreign airlines flying from about a dozen countries, including some from the Middle East, and would include airlines based in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The officials did not name the other countries. REUTERS

UBER PRESIDENT JEFF JONES QUITS

4

Uber Technologies Inc. has been thrust deeper into turmoil with the departure of company president Jeff Jones, a marketing expert hired to help soften its often abrasive image. Jones quit less than seven months after joining the San Francisco company, an Uber spokesman said. In a statement to Reuters, Jones said he could not continue as president of a business with which he was incompatible.

“I joined Uber because of its mission, and the challenge to build global capabilities that would help the company mature and thrive long term,” Jones said. “It is now clear, however, that the beliefs and approach to leadership that have guided my career are inconsistent with what I saw and experienced at Uber, and I can no longer continue as president of the ride-sharing business,” he added. The head of the FBI publicly challenged President Donald Trump, denying the Republican’s claim that former president Barack Obama wiretapped his 2016 election campaign and confirming his agency had launched a criminal investigation into any collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia. FBI Director James Comey told a congressional hearing he had seen no evidence to support a claim by Trump that Obama had wiretapped his campaign headquarters in Manhattan’s Trump Tower. The president created a controversy in early March when he tweeted without giving evidence that Obama had wiretapped the campaign as the businessman took on Democrat Hillary Clinton in the presidential race. “With respect to the president’s tweets about alleged wiretapping directed at him by the prior administration, I have no information that supports those tweets,” Comey told the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee hearing. The committee is investigating accusations that Russia tried to influence the election mostly by hacking Democratic operatives’ emails and releasing embarrassing information. Russia denies the allegations. Comey confirmed the FBI has been investigating since last July possible Russian government efforts to interfere in the election, including any links between Trump’s campaign and Moscow. He said that while the Russian government wanted to hurt Clinton’s campaign and help Trump’s, intelligence agencies made no judgment on whether the efforts influenced the outcome. Comey gave no details of the classified investigation and said the fact that it exists does not mean charges will be filed. U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia tried to help Trump by hacking leading Democrats. Comey said Moscow had long been opposed to Trump’s election rival, former Secretary of State Clinton. REUTERS GETTY IMAGES

Future of commercial fishing uncertain after ‘Codfather’ deception How the illegal pursuits of a fishing empire could affect an entire industry already struggling under intense regulation. ERIN TIERNAN @MetroNewYork

erin.tiernan@metro.us

He’s been dubbed “the Codfather.” Carlos Rafael, owner of a fishing empire that is the largest in the Northeast if not the country, is accused of exploiting federal fishery regulations to get ahead and misreporting hundreds of thousands of pounds of fish. His alleged crimes expose the pitfalls of a system meant to help fishermen and their catch coexist. It’s a tale of fraud, smuggling and organized crime better suited to the big screen than the docks of New Bedford. For the 30 years Rafael has been in business, he’s engaged in an ongoing game of cat and mouse with federal authorities, going so far as to tell regulators, “I am a pirate. It’s your job to catch me.” He’s the kind of guy who investigators say plastered photos of Tony Montana — yes, the cocaine kingpin from “Scarface” — around his office. In the 1980s, he spent six months in jail for tax evasion and in 1994 he was indicted and later found innocent of price-fixing. In 2011, federal agents confiscated an 881-pound tuna that had been illegally netted aboard one of his fishing vessels. He reportedly had no problem telling other bythe-book fishermen he was screwing them. And ultimately, it was greed that brought the Codfather’s house crashing down. In 2015, approaching the age of retirement, Rafael moved to sell his business and let it slip he was looking for a buyer. Though his fleet of 40 ships and accompanying assets clocked in at about

$21 million in assets, based on financial statements, the king of the seas said his business was worth much more. In a meeting with potential buyers Rafael believed to be connected to the Russian organized crime syndicate, he pitched a $175 million price tag for his empire. “I’m trusting you,” Rafael said to the Russians, according to a 24page affidavit filed earlier this month in federal court. “The only thing is, I open myself because both of you is Russians and I don’t think they would have two Russians [posing as agents]. F— me — that would be some bad luck!” Well, it was bad luck after all. As Rafael unveiled the inner workings of his scheme, he was speaking to IRS agents posing as a broker and two Russian immigrants involved in organized crime. Using his fishing fleet and his wholesale business to exploit redundancies in federal regulations, Rafael was bringing in pounds and pounds of struggling groundfish species — like cod and sole, which are subject to strict federal quotas — and misrepresenting

his catch as other species with more lenient quotas, like haddock and red fish. Prosecutors allege Rafael would sell the mislabeled fish from his boats to the wholesale market he owned, make sure the numbers matched, and sell the rare fish for top dollar to a broker named Michael in New York. “You’ll never find a better laundromat than this motherf—er,” he told the undercover agents. He would smuggle cash to overseas bank accounts in his native Portugal. Rafael was freed from jail earlier this month on a $1 million bond and he is expected to plead guilty on March 30. The terms of his plea deal have not been released. Besides tax evasion and fraud, the problem with Rafael’s plan is that it undermined the efforts of federal authorities to manage healthy fisheries and avoid overfishing. Fishermen from Rhode Island to Maine have had their catches limited by federal quotas since 2009 under a program regulators say promotes sustainable fishing, but for many fishermen it’s meant hanging up their hooks. Commuter rail cuts could be coming, according to officials. FILE

MBTA floats options amid backlash over potential service cuts

Tom Brady’s stolen Super Bowl jerseys recovered in Mexico The suspect is a “member of the international media,” the NFL said. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

It will be a super reunion. More than a month after someone stole the jersey that Patriots’ star

quarterback Tom Brady wore in his team’s 34-28 overtime win over the Atlanta Falcons, authorities have recovered the garment in Mexico. They also recovered a second Super Bowl jersey belonging to Brady that was stolen two years ago. The jerseys were found “in the possession of a credentialed member of the international

media,” the NFL said in a statement. “The Super Bowl LI jersey worn last month by MVP Tom Brady has been recovered,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement. “Also retrieved during the ongoing investigation was the jersey Brady wore in the Patriots’ victory in Super Bowl XLIX against

the Seattle Seahawks in 2015.” The FBI is now handling the investigation. While it was missing, Brady’s jersey was estimated to have a value of about $500,000, and Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick called it the “most valuable NFL collectible ever.” Additional reporting by Erin Tiernan and Reuters.

Last week, MBTA officials presented the tough medicine the agency could take to zero-out its $42 million structural deficit, including slashing weekend commuter rail trips and special service for disabled passengers. On Monday, MBTA officials offered up some options that might make the paratransit service reductions go down easier, and said there would also be a range of options related to the commuter rail. “The goal is not to eliminate service. That is a last resort,” MBTA Chief Administrator Brian Shortsleeve said Monday, echoing Gov. Charlie Baker’s remarks on the idea, which the administration last week surfaced as a possibility. In a briefing for reporters ahead of an MBTA Fiscal and Management

Control Board meeting, officials described how other services could potentially fill some of the void if the MBTA discontinues its paratransit services to suburban communities outside the T’s regular service area. Shortsleeve said there would be discussion about potential weekend service reductions on the commuter rail next week. “We’re going to lay forth a whole bunch of options,” Shortsleeve said about weekend suspension of commuter rail service. He said Keolis Commuter Services, the commuter rail vendor, would be pushed to develop better future weekend service and the T is open to “innovative” proposals from the private sector to serve commuter rail communities. French paparazzi honor Kim Kardashian Earlier this week, Kim Kardashian tearfully relived her terrifying Paris robbery on an episode of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” And on Twitter, she acknowledged how the experience changed her. “I took a tragic horrific experience and did not let it diminish me,” she wrote. “Rather [I] grew and evolved and allowed the experience to teach me.” Now, the reality television star is sharing a special tweet from Paris’ paparazzi. “To Kim & the Kardashians,” the text on the photo of a squad of smiling photographers

reads. “We don’t love you because we need you — we need you because we love you. All the very best, your favorite French paps.” Aw? The photographers privately sent the picture to Kardashian, 36, right after the robbery in October. And as one of the paps tells People, the photo was taken spontaneously. “Kim left Paris on the Monday, Oct. 3 and we all felt badly for her,” he says. “We thought we should do something collectively to let her know we support her. She’s one of the nicest celebrities to work with.”

Zayn Malik is a genius, finds cure for anxiety Zayn Malik is opening about his boy band past and overcoming anxiety. Now, no shade, but isn’t that all he ever talks about? Chatting with the Sunday Times Style magazine, the 24-year-old noted he’s pretty much over being anxious now. “It was something I was dealing with in the band,” he said. (I imagine at this point, he started to pat himself on the back.) He continued, “People saw strength in that, and they didn’t seem to expect it from a guy, but they expect it from a female, which to me is crazy.” Boy, do I love it when men call women “females”! Oozing with respect, he is. Anyway, I thought anxiety — much like depression, diabetes and a debilitating passion for sour candy — was more of a lifelong thing you

In lieu of making a cynical comment about the Kardashians’ relationship with the paparazzi, which is what my heart is telling me to do, I’ll just note that Kim’s hair looks really good lately. I’m loving this mermaid look, boo.

Jennifer Lopez is opening up about her postdivorce relationship with exhusband Marc Anthony. Because it’s the perfect way to deflect from talking about her current beau, Alex Rodriguez. On “Live with Kelly,” Lopez gabbed about co-parenting with her ex, saying “We’re best friends, you know? We’re just in a really great place.” When Kelly Ripa asks whether Lopez, 47, would ever considering remarrying Anthony, the “Shades of Blue” actress hastily responds, “Oh, no! No, no!” which, you know, is pretty telling. Lopez and Anthony, 48, were married from 2004 to 2014.

learned to manage. But ol’ wizard Malik over here has apparently found the cure: Just quit your boy band gig! Someone get this man a Nobel prize, please.

Chatting with Vogue Australia, the 24-year-old model talks about using her spotlight as a platform for all the things she’s passionate about. She recently launched the obnoxiously alliterated, but obviously well intentioned, Kode with Klossy camp and a career scholarship that encourages teen girls to get involved in science, math and coding. “I feel a real responsibility to get the girls who are paying attention to

me interested in these important skills,” she explained to the magazine. “I’m sure people underestimate me all the time, but that only motivates me to prove them wrong and actually beat them at their own game.” If by “proving them wrong,” she means recognizing her own mistakes and owning up to them — like the time she apologized for dressing up as a geisha to celebrate diversity — then sure. I’ll take it.

Most importantly, though: When are you going to give us the juice about A-Rod, girl? You know we know. You’re appearing on his sister’s Instagram, and uploading then deleting pictures of you guys spooning on what I assume are sheets made of the finest, most exclusive Egyptian cotton. It’s almost like she wants her privacy outside of social media or something. Almost.

Cat Deely is so dang mad Don’t let the smile fool you: Cat Deely went off on a rant after an unpleasant experience at popular L.A. restaurant TomGeorge. I’m assuming she was served the literal blood of her actual forefathers, because that’s the only legitimate excuse for this kind of behavior. According to People, the host of “So You Think You Can Dance” dined at the downtown eatery when something went awry. She has yet to disclose what exactly happened, so let’s go with the blood of her forefathers thing. Anyway, she immediately took to Twitter to express her displeasure. “The worst featuring! Worst food! As for the manager????? Moron!!!!” Damn, girl. She continued: “The most disgusting

restaurant, terribly run, by a manger who can only be described as an amateur. Avoid at all costs.” The worst part is that her server for the night fired back — turns out the restaurant paid for much of Deely’s food, and despite having no problems with the actual service, she failed to tip. Which frankly is unacceptable. “I gave you respect and I served you with love,” the server said. But the 40-year-old wasn’t having it: “The food was terrible and your manager was unhelpful and rude. Respect and love should be shown to all!” Yeah. She lost me there. But boy, is she angry! I think we can all agree that there’s a vat of boiling blood in this lady’s veins. Who’d have thought?

Natalie Portman geeks out about Terrence Malick The Oscar winner talks about making “Song to Song with a highly unorthodox filmmaker.

The nitty gritty What are the shooting days like on a Malick ďŹ lm? There is no usual day. Every day is sort of madcap. You’re searching for a view, or looking for some ash of something very beautiful. You’re all trying to work together to ďŹ nd it. You’re running from one location to the next and changing clothes in a van on the side of the street. Everything’s brought down to the bare essentials. It’s really fun. Natalie Portman has achieved what few actors have: appearances in multiple Terrence Malick films. The legendary filmmaker (“Days of Heaven, “The Tree of Life) is someone actors love to work for, even though his methods are so unusual. There is no script, and each day they show up not sure what they’ll be shooting. On top of that, there’s a chance they won’t even appear in the finished product. Portman, 35, has made the cut in both last year’s “Knight of Cups and the new “Song to Song, about a love triangle between

10 THINGS TO DO

A bloody good time Bambara’s second annual Mary Madness is ready for some fierce competition. GORDON DONNELLY @gord_donnelly

gordon.donnelly@metro.us

March Madness always gets the blood boiling. The people at Bambara Kitchen & Bar in Cambridge know that all too well. In the spirit of good competition, and of college kids who haven’t quite mastered their fadeaways, Bambara invites you to come fade away with them March 26, at their second annual Mary Madness. The bracketstyle bloody mary competition pits (don’t worry, no olives) 10 local mixologists against one another, and takes place from 1-4 p.m. Thus allowing you

to get nice and lubed up before the 6 p.m. Elite Eight matchups. Guests sample 4-ounce Mary mixtures from each bartender, and pass judgment on a bracketstyle score sheet. So even if you don’t have a stake in the basketball, you’re hardly inconsequential to the drinking — which is all anyone can ask. Participating restaurants are as follows: ArtBar, Bambara Kitchen & Bar, Catalyst, Firebrand Saints, Highball Lounge, JW’s Tavern Road, Townsman, Toro and Trina’s Starlite Lounge. We spoke with Bambara GM Amanda McBride, who gave us the lowdown on the competition.

Bloody Mary from the team at Banyan in the South End. We’re really looking forward to having the folks from Trina’s Starlite Lounge back — their specialty is vegetable-infused vodka that they use to make the “mud” for their mix. New to this year’s competition is Townsman, Toro and JW’s. What kind of food will Chef Bazirgan have in store for us on game day? David Bazirgan recently joined the team at Bambara as our executive chef — his inaugural menu launched in early fall. With influences from his Armenian heritage, he

offers a new, Americanstyle menu, combined with a refined, marketdriven approach to highlight seasonal ingredients. On game day he’ll be creating a seasonal slider, croque madames and pork belly bao buns. Mary Madness: Is the atmosphere as electric as the name? Everyone really gets into the competitive spirit of the event. We create a bracket-style scorecard that allows for guests to vote for their favorites and take notes as they go from table to table. The winner gets a trophy — which is a bit over the top — but the bartenders really get into it.

Grateful Dead Night returns to Fenway The Red Sox will pay tribute to the Grateful Dead once again on April 11 at Fenway Park. The home game day will kick off with a pregame show from Boston-bred GD cover band Playing Dead in Yawkey Way. Ticket holders to the annual event will also receive a limited edition Grateful Dead Night figurine — which depicts three dancing bears, one in Sox gear, looking slightly more alert than its counterparts — and a portion of sales will go toward the Dead’s official service and philanthropy charity, the Rex Foundation. As for the game — oh right, that! — the Sox will take on the Baltimore Ori-

oles around 7 p.m., when Deadheads spill into Fenway for the grooviest night of the year. The Grateful Dead Night at Fenway began when the team hosted their first ever tribute to the late Jerry Garcia in September 2015. The event was such a fan favorite that they’ve brought it back in April 2016, and again this year. Each year has boasted its own limited-edition DeadSox memorabilia, but we personally find the bear trio to be the best yet. Worth noting, Dead & Company — the John Mayer-fronted, post-Garcia edition of the Dead — will also return to Fenway for two nights of shows, June 17-18. RACHEL RACZKA

Deadheads will rise again at Fenway next month. PROVIDED

MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY

wellbeing

Diet do’s and don’ts Just because it’s salad doesn’t make it automatically healthy. Loading up on too many toppings, adding processed cheeses, or sugar-and-preservative filled fat-free dressings can add to weight gain. ALL PHOTOS ISTOCK

Breaking down the biggest weight-loss misconceptions. SHARON FEIEREISEN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

You might have the best intentions when it comes to weight loss, but between confounding studies (chocolate is never going to be the key to shedding pounds!) and brands spending millions on marketing to convince you that their fat, calorie and sugar filled products — which they’ve shrewdly labeled “skinny” or “natural” — are good for you, desired outcomes can be arduous to achieve. We spoke with experts who shared the biggest dieting misconceptions — and advice for healthier eating habits.

feeling tired, cranky and weak, which can trigger excess snacking and feeling deprived, which is not consistent with weight loss.” She does caution that while eating carbohydrates is essential to functioning, doing so in excess does lead to weight gain. “The goal is to eat just the right amount of the right carbs,” she says, such as carbs that are high in fiber, which have zero calories and add bulk to food. Think chickpeas, lentils and broccoli (yes, veggies are carbs).

“When eaten, fiber swells in the stomach. Therefore, when you follow a diet rich in fiber you feel full after eating and you’ll generally eat less throughout the day.”

Breakfast really is for champions We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and for good reason. “Breakfast jump-starts your metabolism,” says Zuckerbrot. “Conversely, skipping breakfast slows down

you’ll lose weight faster.” Not convinced? Sumo wrestlers in Japan skip breakfast so that they will gain weight. Zuckerbrot suggests starting your day with a breakfast that combines high-fiber carbohydrates (wholewheat toast, oatmeal) and lean protein (egg whites, Greek yogurt or low-fat Skipping breakfast slows cheeses) because down your metabolism. these nutrients will fill you up on the fewest calories.

your metabolism and leads to weight gain — so don’t skip meals thinking

Know when you’re hungry

Don’t skip the carbs “One of the biggest mistakes people make in their attempt to lose weight is that they cut out carbohydrates,” says dietitian Tanya Zuckerbrot, the founder of F-Factor. “Carbohydrates fuel our bodies and cutting them out leads to

Not all smoothies are the picture of health. Stick with green veggies, nuts, fresh fruit and homemade nut milk; avoid fattening additives like frozen yogurt, protein powders, sugar and syrups.

“It’s estimated that 75 percent of us overeat not because we’re hungry, but rather in response to feelings,” says dietitian Keri Glassman. “When our eating is spurred by emotions, we tend to consume mostly junk food, so it’s important to pinpoint the exact ‘trigger’ that causes you to overeat.” Shopping at the grocery store when

you’re hungry, eating at the computer, picking off your kids’ plates or waiting too long between meals could all contribute to stress eating.

Choose your healthy foods wisely If you think salads are always a safe option, think again. “It’s important to remember to leave out the croutons, avoid fat-free dressings (they’re loaded with preservatives and sugar), skip the dried fruits and processed cheese, and stay away from too many grains and beans, which are healthy but in excess will lead to weight gain,” says Nikki Ostrower, nutritionist and founder of NAO Nutrition. “Make sure to enjoy a salad with mostly leafy greens and veggies.” Same goes for smoothies. “Many of the health benefits go out the window once you add in things like frozen yogurt, designer protein powder, sugar and syrups,” says Ostrower. “Enjoy a smoothie with greens, nuts, fresh fruit as a sweetener, use soaked nuts and water (aka homemade nut milk) as your base instead of a boxed vegan milk.”

FANTASY BASEBALL: THE 2017 ALL-BUST SQUAD

The regular season kicks off in just two weeks, and fantasy drafts are heating up. Here’s a team of overrated players to try and avoid.

KYLE BISHOP OPINION Kyle Bishop is a lead MLB columnist at RotoBaller. com. His articles and Fantasy Baseball Rankings are your secret weapon for winning fantasy leagues.

Less than two weeks stand between us and opening day, and many

of us have drafted at least once. For those who haven’t — and those whose trigger fingers are already itching for trades — here are my selections for the 2017 All-Bust team. We’ll look at the best bargains next week. Catcher: Evan Gattis, Houston Astros Gattis is the fifth catcher off the board by NFBC ADP despite not having a starting job. While he’ll reportedly see a slightly higher workload than the usual backup and some time at designated hitter, consistent at-bats could be tough to come by. First base: Wil Myers, San Diego Padres Myers finally stayed

healthy for a full season in 2016, and the results were impressive. He came close to being the first 30/30 player in MLB since 2012, scored 99 runs and drove in 94. So what’s not to like? Well, obviously the injury history is discouraging, but even if he can avoid the disabled list, Myers clearly hit a wall in the second half. Can he be productive over the long grind? Second base: Jean Segura, Seattle Mariners As good as he was last season, it’s hard to forget that Segura was one of the worst hitters in baseball over the preceding 2½ years. While Safeco Field doesn’t play as pitcher-friendly as it used to, it’s still

ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

not Chase Field. Segura did the bulk of his damage there and at Coors, hitting 40 points higher at those two parks than anywhere else, and 13 of his 20 home runs. Third base: Eduardo Nunez, San Francisco Giants Nunez’s career OBP checks in at a pedestrian .314, meaning he’ll have to get the green light an awful lot to replicate his 40 swipes from a year ago. Despite his breakout performance at the plate, his run production didn’t move the needle, as he managed just 140 R+RBI. He also cratered in the second half. Shortstop: Jonathan Villar, Milwaukee

Brewers Villar showed surprising pop in 2016, but hadn’t reached doubledigits in homers since 2012, and that was at Double-A. He also either struck out or popped up in nearly 40 percent of his plate appearances, making it difficult to expect another high batting average. Any offensive struggles will take a bite out of his runs scored and stolen base totals. Outfield: Ian Desmond, Colorado Rockies Desmond has been Jekyll and Hyde the last couple of seasons. He hit well in the second half of 2015 and first half of last year, but barely looked like a major leaguer the rest of the time. The

move to Colorado had many fantasy owners excited, but a broken hand will keep him out for at least the first few weeks of the season. Hand injuries tend to linger, raising questions about Desmond’s ability to produce even after he returns to the lineup. Starting pitcher: Jake Arrieta, Chicago Cubs Arrieta struggled with bouts of wildness all season, but as the season wore on, he also had trouble putting hitters away. His K/9 dropped from 9.5 to 7.5 and his home run rate nearly doubled. The veteran has thrown a lot of innings over the last two seasons, and the workload could be catching up to him.
