47 MORE SKULLS FOUND FCC: MEDIA IS NOT THE IN MEXICO MASS GRAVES ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE
1
Investigators unearthed the skulls of 47 more suspected victims of Mexico’s drug war in Veracruz state, just days after uncovering 250 skulls at a separate mass grave used by drug cartels, the state’s attorney general said. Veracruz, on Mexico’s Gulf coast, has long been a stomping ground for criminal gangs, who fight over lucrative drug and migrant smuggling routes. Giving details on the latest grisly find, Jorge Winckler
said the skulls and remains of multiple body parts were unearthed from eight unmarked graves, clustered in a 120 square meter area, about 6 miles from the town of Alvarado. So far, Winckler said, investigators had positively identified one three-person family, missing since September 2016, and the remains of two other men. REUTERS

The head of the Federal Communications Commission told the U.S. Congress he did not agree that “the media is the enemy of the American people” and said he would act independently of the White House on media-related matters. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, whom President Donald Trump has nominated to a new five-year term as head of the body that regulates broadcast television,
radio and other media outlets, made his comments in a letter dated Friday and released on Monday. Pai, a Republican, had refused to say during a Senate hearing earlier this month whether he agreed with Trump’s comments on the media. In February, Trump tweeted: “The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @CNN, @ NBCNews and many more) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American people. SICK.” REUTERS

U.S. authorities are planning to ban passengers traveling on certain U.S.bound foreign airline flights from carrying into the cabin larger electronic devices in response to an unspecified terrorism threat, U.S. officials told Reuters. The new rule is expected to be announced as early as Monday night by the Department of Homeland Security, the officials said, adding that it had been under consideration
since the U.S. government learned of a threat several weeks ago. The source said the rule would cover a dozen foreign airlines flying from about a dozen countries, including some from the Middle East, and would include airlines based in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. UBER PRESIDENT JEFF JONES QUITS
Uber Technologies Inc. has been thrust deeper into turmoil with the departure of company president Jeff Jones, a marketing expert hired to help soften its often abrasive image. Jones quit less than seven months after joining the San Francisco company, an Uber spokesman said. In a statement to Reuters, Jones said he could not continue as president of a business with which he was incompatible.
US-BOUND FLIGHTS TO BAN MOST DEVICES
“I joined Uber because of its mission, and the challenge to build global capabilities that would help the company mature and thrive long term,” Jones said. “It is now clear, however, that the beliefs and approach to leadership that have guided my career are inconsistent with what I saw and experienced at Uber, and I can no longer continue as president of the ride-sharing business,” he added. Thrust and parry: Fencing reigns as ‘New York’s Olympic sport’ The sport’s popularity shows that swordplay isn’t just for Zorro and the Three Musketeers.
Costs of crossing swords Fencing equipment comes in a range of prices. The costs below are just one example of what a participant can spend.

Twice a week, 67-year-old Madelon Rosenfeld does battle with anyone willing to take her on. “You just walk up to someone and say, “Want to fence?” she said. “I fence with men, women, kids, and two guys in their 80s.” A Manhattan lawyer, Rosenfeld participates in bouts at the Fencers Club in Chelsea. She’s been fencing for 18 years. She’s a three-time national champion in her age group and has competed in Austria, Bulgaria, France, and Croatia. She is so immersed in the sport that she takes “three subways, two cabs, and the Metro-North” into Westchester every Saturday for two 20-minute private lessons with her fencing coach, whom she followed from New York City 15 years ago when he opened a club in Hawthorne. Though fencing might conjure images of swashbuckling pirates, a trio of musketeers and Zorro, the clash of foils happens often in New York City. The city is a magnet for competitive fencers, and a Yelp search reveals at least

six fencing clubs in Manhattan alone. Daryl Homer, an Olympic Sabre fencer who won the silver medal in the 2016 Summer Games in Brazil, described fencing as “New York’s Olympic sport” because of “our high concentration of elite coaches, our athletes becoming more visible via media and popular culture, and [the] increasing number of … school programs, clubs, and nonprofit initiatives.” Homer’s interest in fencing was sparked when he was just 5 years old, growing up in the Bronx
with his single mom. “I first learned about fencing by [seeing it] in a children’s dictionary,” he recalled. His fascination was further piqued after watching the sport in action in films like “Zorro” and “The Parent Trap.” Homer’s mother agreed to enroll him in classes at the Peter Westbrook Foundation, a nonprofit fencing club for underserved youth. Eventually, Homer paired up with renowned local Olympic coach Yury Gelman, and fencing became more than just Homer’s passion; it be-
came his career. Homer went on to become the second-ever American competitor to win an Olympic medal in individual sabre fencing. The first was Peter Westbrook himself, who won the Olympic bronze in 1984. Though both Homer and Westbrook are black athletes in a sport widely associated with wealthy white people, Homer said it was a misconception that fencing is exclusionary. “[At] my current club you’ll find people of all ages, socioeconomic classes, and races,” he said.
For many years, Homer trained at Gelman’s prestigious Manhattan Fencing Center, which opened in 2007. At that club, Olympic medalists like Homer rub elbows with children as young as five. (Gelman is a fivetime Olympic fencing coach and was inducted into the U.S. Fencing Hall of Fame in 2010.) The club’s executive director, Julia Gelman, noted that 70 percent of the Center’s students range between 8 and 13 years old, though she also sees regulars in their sixties. “Fencing is known as
physical chess,” she said. “Many parents and students [tell] us that fencing helps them do better in school or work. It helps [people] focus and make quick decisions.” However, it can be an expensive sport for those who compete. The cost of travel, training camps, classes, and coaching add up, though Gelman noted the center provides equipment for beginner students. “Once a student is at the intermediate level, they purchase their own equipment,” he said. For Rosenfeld and others who love the sport, there’s nothing quite like it, and fencing’s benefits — both mental and physical — outweigh any financial hits. “Fencing is meditative but it can also be anxiety-producing,” she said. “There is something thrilling about it.”

‘MAGA’- hat-wearing Philly man sues NYC bar for refusing service The Happiest Hour filled him with sadness, the lawsuit claims. ALEXIS SACHDEV @lexsachdev
alexis.sachdev@metro.us
A Philadelphia man’s accessory of choice stirred up controversy at a New York City cocktail lounge when he donned a “Make America Great Again” baseball cap while out for drinks, and a bartender refused to serve him. Now, he’s suing. Greg Piatek, a 30-year-old accountant, stopped by West Village hotspot The Happiest Hour with two friends Jan. 28 after touring the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Piatek and his crew were initially served drinks, but their table was ignored when they called for a second round. They waited about 15

to 20 minutes — during which time the bartender gave Piatek “a lengthy death stare” and walked past their table numerous times — until one of the plaintiff’s friends called over the bartender to ask for another round.
“Visibly flustered, annoyed and filled with hatred,” the lawsuit stated, the bartender approached Piatek and said, “Is that hat a joke?” Another bartender asked if the hat was a joke, and shouted at Pi-
atek: “I can’t believe you would support someone so terrible and you must be as terrible a person.” The Happiest Hour manager spoke with tavern owner Jon Neidich, and told Piatek that “anyone who supports [Presi-
dent Donald] Trump or believes what you believe is not welcome here. And you need to leave right now because we won’t serve you,” the suit says. Then, the Philly man was escorted to the door. The lawsuit said booting Piateck from the establishment “was so outrageous in character and extreme in degree so as to go beyond all possible bounds of decency in a civilized society.” Filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, the suit claims Piatek was discriminated against for his political beliefs. Piatek’s lawyer described the ordeal as “the most discriminatory, humiliating and ‘saddest hour’ of his life,” claiming his client suffered and continues to suffer anxiety and emotional distress from the incident. Neidich didn’t respond to requests for comment from several news media.

One of the real estate holdings De Blasio and his wife own is a two-family home in Park Slope that is described on the real estate site Streeteasy as “Sunny & Sweet” and “enchanting” with a “charming Victorian front porch.” The available one-bedroom on 11th Street, owned by the mayor and his wife, Chirlane McCray, is going for $1,825 a month. That upstairs unit will be available in May to nonsmokers without pets, according to the ad. The previous tenants moved out to buy their own home, a mayoral spokesman told Politico. De Blasio’s mother lived in the building from 2004 until her death in 2007. De Blasio initially set rent at $1,800. The rent was raised $25 in June 2015, right as the mayor was talking about a “historic” rent freeze on one-year leases, Politico reported. In 2014, the downstairs apartment was fetching $2,750, but Politico was unable to obtain a current figure on that unit from the mayor’s office. KIMBERLY M. AQUILINA

FBI head denies Trump wiretap claim, confirms Russia probe FBI Director James Comey testified before the House Intelligence Committee.
James Comey GETTY IMAGES
The head of the FBI publicly challenged President Donald Trump on Monday, denying the Republican’s claim that former president Barack Obama wiretapped his 2016 election campaign and confirming his agency had launched a criminal investigation into any collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia. FBI Director James Comey told a congressional hearing he had seen no evidence to support a claim by Trump that Obama had wiretapped his campaign headquarters in Manhattan’s Trump Tower. The president created a controversy in early March when he tweeted without giving evidence that Obama had wiretapped the campaign as the businessman took on Democrat Hillary Clinton in the presidential race. “With respect to the president’s tweets about alleged wiretapping directed at him by the prior administration, I have no information that supports those tweets,” Comey told the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee hearing. The committee is investigating accusations that Russia tried to influence the election mostly by hacking Democratic operatives’ emails and releasing embarrassing information. Russia denies the allegations. Comey confirmed the FBI has been investigating since last July
possible Russian government efforts to interfere in the election, including any links between Trump’s campaign and Moscow. He said that while the Russian government wanted to hurt Clinton’s campaign and help Trump’s, intelligence agencies made no judgment on whether the efforts influenced the outcome. Comey gave no details of the classified investigation and said the fact that it exists does not mean charges will be filed. U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia tried to help Trump by hacking leading Democrats. Comey said Moscow had long been opposed to Trump’s election rival, a former secretary of state. “I think that was a fairly easy judgment for the [intelligence] community,” he said. “Putin hated Secretary Clinton so much that the flip side of that coin was he had a clear preference for the person running against the person he hated so much.” Asked about Comey, White House spokesman Sean Spicer read a series of quotes from officials — some from the Obama administration — who have said they have seen no signs of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia. In a tweet before the hearing, Trump wrote: “The Democrats made up and pushed the Russian story as an excuse for running a terrible campaign.” Spicer said he was not aware of any White House official being under investigation by the FBI. NY attorney general hires corruption prosecutors to target Trump The prosecutors will follow leads on any allegations of corrupt practices involving the Trump Organization. AMANDA MIKELBERG @MetroNewYork
amanda.mikelberg@metro.us
On the same day that the FBI director confirmed the agency is investigating possible Russian interference in the presidential election, the New York attorney general said he has hired two special prosecutors to scrutinize the Trump administration. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman hired Howard McMaster from the office of former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara to investigate President Donald Trump’s businesses and his administration’s actions, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The office has also hired Eric Haren, who has worked on civil rights and constitutional law cases as chief counsel to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the New York Daily News reported. Trump fired Bharara, along with 46 other U.S. attorneys, on March 11. Interest mounted recently about Schneiderman’s next move against Trump, after having successfully sued Trump University, resulting in a $25 million settlement in favor of the plaintiffs that Trump had initially vowed would never happen. Some former Trump University students are requesting a federal judge reject the settle-
ment so they can bring Trump to court. In October, Schneiderman also pulled the plug on the Trump Foundation, which operated as a charity, after finding it wasn’t properly registered, and had been involved in dubious activities related to political donations and favors. “Certainly, my office is looking at anything that’s passed on to us and doing our own research,” Schneiderman said last month at a meeting of the National Association of Attorneys General. Bharara’s office was reportedly investigating Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, related to stock trades he had made, Pro Publica reported Friday. On Monday, FBI Director James Comey told a congressional hearing that the agency was investigating possible Russian government efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, including any links between Trump’s campaign and Moscow. The group Free Speech for People appealed to Schneiderman in February, asking him to revoke a business charter that allows the Trump Organization, the president’s business empire, to continue to operate in New York, indicating possible illegal activities. Last week another letter to the attorney general asked him to investigate Trump Organization dealings in Azerbaijan that “may have violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act” and U.S. sanctions against Iran.

Baby Boomers May Avoid Knee Surgery With Modern Arthritis Treatments Doctors say these two factors are the keys to knee arthritis treatment success and relieving pain without surgery By Matt Edgar America’s Health Writer New York City - Everyone has said it at one time or another. If I had only known about “this” sooner - things would be very different today. That’s what many knee arthritis pain sufferers are saying about this technology and treatment. “We all know that countless lives are being saved every year because of early detection and better treatment ” noted the clinic director at the NY Pain MD in New York City. “The same holds true for treating arthritis pain. The director believes one of the most important factors for the success of viscosupplementation is making sure you are getting it into the joint space precisely. Knee Pain Screenings Offered To Help Determine If New York Metro Area Residents Qualify For Popular Treatment Knee pain sufferers have limited time to claim knee pain screening to see if all-natural knee arthritis treatment might work for them If you qualify for this treatment, it might be one of the happiest days of your life. That’s because, for the past year and a half, hundreds NY Pain MD of knee pain sufferers have New York City. That’s when their specially trained-doctors added Hyalgan treatments to their already successful comprehensive knee pain relief program. Viscosupplementation is unique because - eventhough it is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company, it is NOT considered a drug because it is a natural substance with an incredible story.
Why So Many Want It You see, when you suffer with arthritis - the lubricatThis means instead of gliding smoothly - your bones start to rub and grind against each other. This causes a little pain in the beginning - but over time the pain steadily gets worse until it is excruciating.
Like “Joint Oil” Viscosupplementation works so well because it is like ‘joint oil.” It is a natural substance that contains one of the natural building blocks of the synovial fluid that lubricates your knee. Scientists and researchers discovered this natural building block to synovial fluid in the rooster’s comb - that big red thing on top of the roosters head. It is extracted from the roosters comb, purified and concentrated. They have also developed medical lubricants that are also natural but made a bit like yogurt and "cultured" into highly effective arthritis pain-fighting medical lubricants. When introduced directly into your knee joint, it is like squirting oil on a rusty door hinge. Viscosupplementation allows your joints to glide more smoothly eliminating a lot of the rubbing, grinding and pain.
Can Supplements Do The Same Thing? No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and other supplements are much different. You can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of unsubstantiated claims made by supplements to do what this advanced medical procedure does.
Why You Should Try This Even If You’ve Already Had Similar Treatments Without Results... “We have been able to help so many knee pain sufferers - even many who have already tried other treatments like Synvisc, Supartz, Orthovisc and even Hyalgan. This is because our treating doctors always use “Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology”. This allows us to place the Viscosupplementation exactly where is needs to be. Studies show doctors doing joint injections without technology can miss the joint up to 30% of the time.” noted the Director of Center NY Pain MD is a state of the art medical facility offering only the best technology.

And that’s not all “Every case is individual. Some patients get quite a bit of relief right away - others take a little more time. But most have been extremely happy. We’ve noted results lasting no less than 6 months for many but up to 2 years for some patients.. Patients who were suffering for years with bad knee pain are getting their lives back... going for walks again and exercising. It’s amazing to see. Cuomo unveils South Bronx highway rebuilding plan The project is expected to generate 4,250 jobs. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday unveiled a $1.8 billion highway reconstruction plan in New York City’s South Bronx aimed at benefiting one of the world’s biggest food markets and an area once seen as a symbol of urban blight. It was the latest public works plan announced by Cuomo at a time when such projects are increasingly on the national agenda. President Donald Trump has vowed to spend $1 trillion on infrastructure, which the American Society of Civil Engineers has given a near-failing grade. The highway project in the Bronx, the poorest of the five boroughs, would rebuild

the Bruckner-Sheridan highway interchange to allow the area’s largely black and Hispanic residents easier access to parkland and the Bronx River on the other side, Cuomo said. The plan also calls
for new highway ramps to give vehicles direct access to the Hunts Point Market, one of the biggest food distribution sites in the world. Residents have long complained of respiratory problems
from the 13,000 trucks daily that spew exhaust as they rumble through local streets. “The best future for the Bronx is ahead and we’re going to lead a Bronx that is better than any Bronx that has ever been, Cuomo said in announcing the project. The project is expected to generate 4,250 jobs and will be completed in multiple phases, he said. Cuomo has earmarked the $700 million needed for the first stage in this year’s state budget, which is expected to be voted on April 1. Cuomo’s emphasis on public works projects has included a stage of the Second Avenue Subway, renovation of LaGuardia Airport and replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge across the Hudson River. REUTERS
NOW CAMPAIGN NOW-NY ďŹ ghts Trump’s plan to cut funds for Violence Against Women Act President Donald Trump and his administration are engaging in an “anti-women agenda,â€? says New York City’s chapter of the National Organization for Women in announcing a campaign to ďŹ ght for continued funding of the Violence Against Women Act. Local NOW leaders launched the Take Rape Seriously NOW Campaign during a news conference Monday near the Fearless Girl statue in the Financial District. “President Trump’s team — unapologetic for his ‘locker room’ talk and humiliating attacks on women — has already alluded to defunding the program’s 25 VAWA state programs
in a recent budget blueprint from the Heritage Foundation,â€? NOW-NY said in a statement. The campaign plans to call on the state’s congressional delegation to oppose cuts to the VAWA as well as any legislation or budget cuts that would jeopardize the rights of women. The state received $7.7 million last year in VAWA grants to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault through programs administered by nonproďŹ t organizations, hospitals and law enforcement agencies, NOW leaders said. “VAWA has transformed the way government responds to domestic and sexual violence and has served as a model around the world,â€? they said in a statement. Billionaire philanthropist David Rockefeller, former head of Chase Manhattan Corp. and patriarch of one of the most famous and influential American families, died on Monday, a family spokesman said. He was 101. Rockefeller, who reportedly gave away nearly $2 billion in his lifetime, died in his sleep of congestive heart failure at his home in Pocantico Hills, New York, spokesman Fraser Seitel said in a statement. One of the few remaining links to the U.S. “gilded” era of robber barons, he was the son of John D. Rockefeller Jr., who developed New York’s Rockefeller Center, and was the last living grandson of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil and the family dynasty. He also
embodied an era when globe-trotting bank chiefs worked with the world’s most powerful politicians. During his time as head of Chase from 1969 to 1981, Rockefeller forged such a network of close relationships with governments and multinational corporations that observers said the bank had its own foreign policy. The Rockefeller name came to symbolize unpopular U.S. banking policies in debtor countries, and Rockefeller was scorned on the left for working with Chile’s Augusto Pinochet and the shah of Iran. He also was viewed with anger on the right for pushing to open trade with China and the Soviet
Union during the Cold War. The Trilateral Commission, a group Rockefeller founded in 1973 to foster relations between North America, Japan and Western Europe, came to be a regular target of the far-right and conspiracy theorists who said it was trying to create a oneworld government. Rockefeller became embroiled in an international incident when in 1979 he and long-time friend Henry Kissinger helped persuade President Jimmy Carter to admit the shah of Iran to the United States for treatment of lymphoma, helping precipitate the Iran hostage crisis. Group: Trump’s cut to flood map program could trigger insurance rate hikes Flood-mapping provides important details about where it is safe to build, whether flood insurance is needed and how to price coverage, Robert Hunter, director of insurance for the Consumer Federation of America, said in a statement. A proposal by the Trump administration to cut $190 million in funding for updating U.S. maps of flood-prone areas would trigger higher insurance rates or more homebuilding in risky locations, a consumer group said on Monday. Slashing funding for the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) retooling of U.S. flood maps will lead to relying on old maps and construction in areas that are now flood prone, or hiking insurance premiums to pay for new maps, Hunter said. The White House 2018 budget, unveiled last Thursday, would

eliminate a $190 million “discretionary appropriation for the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) updating of U.S. flood maps and “explore other more effective and fair means of funding flood mapping efforts. Costs for mapping have been shared by insurance policyholders and the federal government for the past 15 years, said a spokeswoman for the Federal Emergency Management (FEMA), which

avenues to shift these costs away from general appropriations, the FEMA spokeswoman said. Updating U.S. flood maps is seen by consumer and insurance industry advocates as a necessary step toward modernizing the U.S. flood insurance market. The White House 2018 budget is the first step in a long process that will be debated by U.S. lawmakers. The NFIP, whose authorization is set to expire in September, could face other sweeping changes. The program is $24.6 billion in debt to the U.S. Treasury Department, the FEMA spokeswoman said. Insurance industry groups are also concerned about the mapping proposal. “Understandably, we’re all concerned about the potential to undermine efforts to modernize the maps, said Leigh Ann Pusey, president and chief executive officer of the American Insurance Association. Still, the budget process is at an early stage, Pusey said. REUTERS
Celebrity athletes invest for an impact Giving back to their communities has always been a challenge for pro athletes who get rich quick, because they tend to lose the money even more quickly. But even those who manage to build a substantial amount of wealth have a hard time using it charitably in a way that truly has a long-term impact. Some celebrity athletes are turning to “impact investing, a growing niche of dogooder strategies that aim to put money toward charitable causes but that would otherwise lack support. Fund managers, of course, also aim to generate income in the process. The Turner Multifamily Impact Fund, a privateequity style vehicle focused on preserving affordable housing, has lately drawn financial support from NBA All-Star Chris Paul. He joins former World No. 1 tennis player Andre Agassi and Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, who have invested in other funds and projects run by the parent company, Turner Impact Capital and its founder, Bobby Turner. Their contributions work with dollars from hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and actress Eva Longoria. In an interview with

Google apologizes to ad clients for YouTube fiasco Google apologized on Monday for allowing ads to appear alongside offensive videos on YouTube as more high-profile firms such as Marks & Spencer and HSBC pulled advertising for British markets from Google sites. The British government has suspended its advertising on YouTube after some public sector ads appeared next to videos carrying homophobic and anti-Semitic messages, prompting a flood of major companies to follow suit. Britain is the largest market for Alphabet Inc.’s Google outside the United States, generating $7.8 billion mainly from advertising in 2016, or nearly 9 percent of the U.S. giant’s global revenue. “I would like to apologize to our partners and advertisers who might have been affected by

their ads appearing on controversial content,” Google EMEA President Matt Brittin said at the annual Advertising Week Europe event in London. Besides well-known British brands pulling the plug, some of the world’s biggest advertising companies responsible for placing vast amounts of marketing material for clients said they were reviewing how they worked with Google. The boycott is the latest clash between advertising companies
and the internet giants that have built up dominant positions in digital advertising by offering not only huge audiences but also the ability to apply their user data to make ads more targeted and relevant. For big advertising groups such as WPP, internet firms are both a client and a competitor, while traditional media groups such as newspapers and general online news publishers are having to compete with them for online dollars.

Travel ban, strong dollar seen putting damper on US tourism sector Travel and tourism’s contribution to the U.S. economy will grow at a slower pace this year than in 2016 due to a strong dollar and a perception that the country is less welcoming to foreigners, the World Travel and Tourism Council said. President Donald Trump earlier this month signed a revised executive order banning citizens from six Muslim-majority nations from traveling to the United States, which some have warned could deter visitors. Those countries account for a tiny percentage of visitors to the United States, but there is growing concern that the order could hurt the country’s image and scare other tourists away. “The travel ban is not having a material impact

yet. But we are seeing the unintended consequences of this now because the message has gone around the world that the U.S. is not open for business,” the WTTC’s President David Scowsill told Reuters. The travel and tourism sector’s contribution to the U.S. gross domestic product is expected to grow by 2.3 percent this year, a slowdown from an expansion of 2.8 percent seen in 2016, the WTTC said on Monday. Growth will be driven by trips from the United States to elsewhere as the strong dollar makes it cheaper for Americans to travel to destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean. “Overall the U.S. is still robust,” Scowsill said. “The most important thing is that we get to the end of this [travel ban] situation,” he said. The U.S. travel and tourism sector is the biggest in the world, accounting for $1.5 trillion, or around 20 percent of the world’s travel and tourism GDP contributions.
“In Europe, people have still been getting on airplanes and traveling. They just haven’t been going to those [volatile] places.” Scowsill
Globally, the sector’s contribution is expected to grow by 3.8 percent this year, generating $7.9 trillion and accelerating from a 3.3 percent increase in 2016. Some destinations suffered last year as attacks prompted travelers to head elsewhere, with tourist spending dropping in Belgium, France and Turkey. But the WTTC said that consumers switched to other destinations such as Bulgaria, Cyprus or Spain rather than putting off travel altogether. REUTERS

How to pick the right college for you National decision day is approaching. SARA FEINSTEIN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
After months of research, campus visits and admission essays, the big decision has arrived: Where are you going to college? We spoke with Stacey Brook, founder and chief adviser at College Essay Advisors, for some tips on how to make the right choice before the May 1 deadline.
Consult your recordswBefore you get overwhelmed by indecision, the first thing you should do is look back at your records, says Brook, “and remember– you prepared for this.” The supplemental essays, which essentially asked students why they were interested in going to any given school, is a great place to start, she explains. These essays require a lot of research and likely “contain many specific justifications that connects the

There’s also a lot of to be learned from what they jotted down during their college visits and online research sessions, explains Brook. “Students should unearth those notes and remind themselves of why each school initially made it onto their lists.”
Make a pros and cons list For those who don’t
know where to begin, start with a trusty pros and cons list. Brook suggests narrowing down your

Pros can include anything from offers my dream major or has excellent cafeteria food, while the cons might take into consideration class sizes or proximity to home, she explains. The next step: Go through your lists and circle the top three musts in each category, says Brook. “This just makes it easy to visualize your interest in a set of
schools in a more cutand-dried fashion, and it might make it incredibly obvious where your interest at heart lies,” she explains. “At the very least, it’s going to help you organize your thoughts and distill the most important parts of your decision making.”

it’s important that you factor that into the equation, she explains. “Ask the colleges financial aid office to break things down for you and answer any questions for you that might come up,” says Brook. “Those things are typically pretty tricky to unpack. So spending some time with a student debt calculator and really figuring out what your situation will be, even with financial aid, is pretty crucial.” You should also look into how graduates from any given school typically fare upon graduation, she explains, especially in your field of study. Ask yourself, “If I’m going to incur debt, will the reward of getting a degree from the school I’ve selected financially be worth it?” The other thing to consider is: Do you have the aspirations to pursue a Masters degree or a PhD? If so, you may want to take into account that you could potentially be accruing yet another degrees worth of expenses when you’re finished with your undergraduate schooling– and plan your spending accordingly.

After months of research, tedious applications and campus visits, students finally have to commit to one college.
“The time period between when you apply in November or December, and when you’re required to make a decision in May is often a period of tremendous maturation and growth,” says Brook. “Just because you had a burning desire to attend a school six months ago doesn’t mean you want to go there today.” Overall, she explains, it’s incredibly useful to
really sit with yourself and consider: Is what I wanted half a year ago the same thing that I want today?
Trust your gut When it comes down to making the final decision, sometimes the best thing to do is just listen to yourself, says Brook. “Campus culture is often really hard to define, but sometimes you just have a special feeling about a place,” she adds. That means thinking about where you felt most at home while walking on campus, which students seemed the most welcoming, which academic programs or school traditions called to you when you were thumbing through the websites and said, ‘I was made for you,’ she explains. “Anything along those lines — if you can listen to that — it can be a pretty valuable sign for you.”
Make the choice and stick with it At the end of the day, the best thing you can do is make the choice with confidence and avoid looking back. After all, the truth is “there is a niche for every single student on any given campus– you just have to be willing to seek out your place,” explains Brook. And even the wrong initial decision is fixable. If the school you end up choosing turns out not to be a great fit, transferring is always an option, she adds. “You’re never going to be stuck in one place as long as you check in with yourself along the way.”

French paparazzi honor Kim Kardashian Earlier this week, Kim Kardashian tearfully relived her terrifying Paris robbery on an episode of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” And on Twitter, she acknowledged how the experience changed her. “I took a tragic horrific experience and did not let it diminish me,” she wrote. “Rather [I] grew and evolved and allowed the experience to teach me.” Now, the reality television star is sharing a special tweet from Paris’ paparazzi. “To Kim & the

Kardashians,” the text on the photo of a squad of smiling photographers reads. “We don’t love you because we need you — we need you because we love you. All the very best, your favorite French paps.” Aw? The photographers privately sent the picture to Kardashian, 36, right after the robbery in October. And as one of the paps tells People, the photo was taken spontaneously. “Kim left Paris on the Monday, Oct. 3, and we all felt badly for her,” he says.
Zayn Malik is a genius, finds cure for anxiety Zayn Malik is opening about his boy-band past and overcoming anxiety. Now, no shade, but isn’t that all he ever talks about? Chatting with the Sunday Times Style magazine, the 24-year-old noted he’s pretty much over being anxious now. “It was something I was dealing with in the band,” he said. (I imagine at this point, he started to pat himself on the back.) He continued, “People saw strength in that, and they didn’t seem to expect it from a guy, but they expect it from a female, which to me is crazy.” Boy, do I love it when men call women “females”! Oozing with respect, he is.

“We thought we should do something collectively to let her know we support her. She’s one of the nicest celebrities to work with.” In lieu of making a cynical comment about the Kardashians’ relationship with the paparazzi, which is what my heart is telling me to do, I’ll just note that Kim’s hair looks really good lately. I’m loving this mermaid look, boo.
Jennifer Lopez is opening up about her postdivorce relationship with exhusband Marc Anthony. Because it’s the perfect way to deflect from talking about her current beau, Alex Rodriguez. On “Live With Kelly,” Lopez gabbed about co-parenting with her ex, saying “We’re best friends, you know? We’re just in a really great place.” When Kelly Ripa asks whether Lopez, 47, would ever considering remarrying Anthony, the “Shades of Blue” actress hastily responds, “Oh, no! No, no!” which, you know, is pretty telling. Lopez and Anthony, 48, were married from 2004 to 2014.
Most important, though: When are you going to give us the juice about A-Rod, girl? You know we know. You’re appearing on his sister’s Instagram, and uploading then deleting pictures of you guys spooning on what I assume are sheets made of the finest, most exclusive Egyptian cotton. It’s almost like she wants her privacy outside of social media or something. Almost.

Natalie Portman geeks out about Terrence Malick The Oscar winner talks about making “Song to Song with a highly unorthodox filmmaker.
The nitty gritty What are the shooting days like on a Malick ďŹ lm? There is no usual day. Every day is sort of madcap. You’re searching for a view, or looking for some ash of something very beautiful. You’re all trying to work together to ďŹ nd it. You’re running from one location to the next and changing clothes in a van on the side of the street. Everything’s brought down to the bare essentials. It’s really fun. It feels like a bunch of punk teenagers making a movie, except they’re all really skilled masters.

Natalie Portman has achieved what few actors have: appearances in multiple Terrence Malick films. The legendary filmmaker (“Days of Heaven, “The Tree of Life) is someone actors love to work for, even though his methods are so unusual. There is no script, and each day they show up not sure what they’ll be shooting. On top of that, there’s a chance they won’t even appear in the finished product. Portman, 35, has made the cut in both last year’s “Knight of Cups and the new “Song to Song, about a love triangle between

“Knight of Cups? I was so intrigued by the whole setup, because it’s so different from how anyone else works. We get so used to the rituals of filmmaking. He deconstructs all of that. There’s no reason we need to have touch-ups every five minutes, there’s no reason we have to have continuity with location or clothing within a scene. You can disorient an audience, and that’s fine.

Kidney cancer
wellbeing Mount Sinai urologist Dr. Ketan Badani breaks down the risk, symptoms and treatment of kidney cancer. IISTOCK
sheila.dougherty@metro.us
We know that we’re supposed to perform regular self-exams for our own health. Doctors advise women to check their breasts once a month for lumps and irregularities and encourage everyone to use sunscreen and regularly check their skin for bumps and marks. That being said, there aren’t tests for every illness, and it’s impossible to know if every part of your own body is affected by a disease like cancer. As a result, some cancers are discovered “incidentally, or when a person is seeking treatment for an unrelated reason; kidney cancer is one of those. We talked to Dr. Ketan Badani, a urologist at Mount Sinai Health System, about the risk of kidney cancer and some of the ways doctors are trying to improve early detection and intervention. March is kidney cancer awareness month. Who is at risk for kidney cancer? Everybody is. That’s the unfortunate answer. The problem is, we don’t know the exact factors that arise with kidney cancer. Three percent of the population gets it, and we don’t know exactly who that’s going to be. How do you know if you might have it? You can actually have a mass, or a fullness, in the

obesity — these factors are bad for small blood vessels in the body. So the kidney, being a blood filter, much like the heart is a pump for blood, when you affect the arteries that feed that organ, it’s gonna hurt the organ.

ASK MOUNT SINAI Stay Healthy side called the flank. And then other constitutional things that aren’t specific to kidney cancer — weight loss, fatigue, that sort of thing. The problem is, probably more than 80 percent of all kidney cancers diagnosed in the United States is found incidentally. So there’s no speciďŹ c screening test for it? No, and that’s the problem we have. The majority of kidney cancers are asymptomatic. Whatever the symptom was that got you to your primary doctor or the emergency room is probably completely unrelated to the fact that you found a kidney tumor. What can you do to make sure your kidneys are healthy? Overall kidney health is based on the same factors that are good for your heart. Things that hurt kidneys over time are high blood pressure — that’s probably the No. 1 kidney killer in the U.S. Smoking, diabetes,
How do you treat kidney cancer? Pretty much all kidney cancers are cured by removal. They’re not really sensitive to traditional chemotherapies or radiation. And so surgical removal is essentially the cure in early stage kidney cancers. The procedure we do is a robotic partial nephrectomy, [which is] minimally invasive, two holes in the abdomen, instead of making a big cut. We’re seeing really good functional outcomes afterward because we’re minimally traumatizing the kidney by doing this [method]. Can you talk about Mount Sinai’s clinical trials around kidney cancer? One trial is actually a time to figure out a biomarker, or screening test for someone who’s at risk for getting kidney cancer. So we’re doing a study where we’re looking at protein in the urine. The second one, we’re just launching, is treating patients with partial nephrectomy, doing a randomized study looking at amniotic stem cells to see if we can actually regenerate the lost part of the kidney.

FANTASY BASEBALL: THE 2017 ALL-BUST SQUAD
The regular season kicks off in just two weeks, and fantasy drafts are heating up. Here’s a team of overrated players to try and avoid.
KYLE BISHOP OPINION Kyle Bishop is a lead MLB columnist at RotoBaller. com. His articles and Fantasy Baseball Rankings are your secret weapon for winning fantasy leagues.
Less than two weeks stand between us and opening day, and many
of us have drafted at least once. For those who haven’t — and those whose trigger fingers are already itching for trades — here are my selections for the 2017 All-Bust team. We’ll look at the best bargains next week. Catcher: Evan Gattis, Houston Astros Gattis is the fifth catcher off the board by NFBC ADP despite not having a starting job. While he’ll reportedly see a slightly higher workload than the usual backup and some time at designated hitter, consistent at-bats could be tough to come by. First base: Wil Myers, San Diego Padres Myers finally stayed
healthy for a full season in 2016, and the results were impressive. He came close to being the first 30/30 player in MLB since 2012, scored 99 runs and drove in 94. So what’s not to like? Well, obviously the injury history is discouraging, but even if he can avoid the disabled list, Myers clearly hit a wall in the second half. Can he be productive over the long grind? Second base: Jean Segura, Seattle Mariners As good as he was last season, it’s hard to forget that Segura was one of the worst hitters in baseball over the preceding 2½ years. While Safeco Field doesn’t play as pitcher-friendly as it used to, it’s still
ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
not Chase Field. Segura did the bulk of his damage there and at Coors, hitting 40 points higher at those two parks than anywhere else, and 13 of his 20 home runs. Third base: Eduardo Nunez, San Francisco Giants Nunez’s career OBP checks in at a pedestrian .314, meaning he’ll have to get the green light an awful lot to replicate his 40 swipes from a year ago. Despite his breakout performance at the plate, his run production didn’t move the needle, as he managed just 140 R+RBI. He also cratered in the second half. Shortstop: Jonathan Villar, Milwaukee
Brewers Villar showed surprising pop in 2016, but hadn’t reached doubledigits in homers since 2012, and that was at Double-A. He also either struck out or popped up in nearly 40 percent of his plate appearances, making it difficult to expect another high batting average. Any offensive struggles will take a bite out of his runs scored and stolen base totals. Outfield: Ian Desmond, Colorado Rockies Desmond has been Jekyll and Hyde the last couple of seasons. He hit well in the second half of 2015 and first half of last year, but barely looked like a major leaguer the rest of the time. The
move to Colorado had many fantasy owners excited, but a broken hand will keep him out for at least the first few weeks of the season. Hand injuries tend to linger, raising questions about Desmond’s ability to produce even after he returns to the lineup. Starting pitcher: Jake Arrieta, Chicago Cubs Arrieta struggled with bouts of wildness all season, but as the season wore on, he also had trouble putting hitters away. His K/9 dropped from 9.5 to 7.5 and his home run rate nearly doubled. The veteran has thrown a lot of innings over the last two seasons, and the workload could be catching up to him.

Aries Don’t run away from controversy. Dig up the facts you need to back your position. Your strength and courage will impress someone influential.
Libra Don’t jump to conclusions. Bide your time and use your intelligence and logic to help control emotional situations. Don’t give in to unreasonable demands.
Taurus Make travel plans, set up meetings and take the initiative to bring about changes. Deal with matters pertaining to education, children and information sharing.
Scorpio It’s in your best interest to keep busy and concentrate on what you can accomplish instead of stewing over what others are doing. Jealousy isn’t the way to go.
Gemini Don’t let money slip through your fingers. Invest in yourself. Gaining experience and knowledge will boost your confidence and reputation.
Sagittarius Someone oblivious to your situation will unintentionally give you an ideal way to recycle an old idea. There is money to be made if you put in the time and effort.
Cancer Try not to let your emotions take control, especially at work or when you’re dealing with partners. It’s important to see all sides of a situation.
Capricorn Ignore an urge to travel or take on something that might harm your reputation. What may appear to be an opportunity is likely to be riddled with uncertainty.
Leo Think before you let your emotions lead you down a slippery slope. Say less and do more in order to avoid criticism. Don’t let anger or excessive behavior take the reins.
Aquarius Don’t let frustration lead to a confrontation with someone who doesn’t see things your way. Ignore what others do and stay focused on what works best for you.
Virgo Keep close tabs on your expenses. Cut corners where possible. Networking will be informative. Put more energy into learning and gaining experience.
Pisces Get involved in things that matter. Community organizations that strive to make your environment better will give you a platform to air your opinions. EUGENIA LAST
