TRUMP WARNS GOP TO GET IRA COMMANDER TURNED 100 FAKE IDS CONFISCATED BEHIND HEALTH CARE BILL PEACEMAKER DIES AT 66 AT HUB LIQUOR STORE

1

President Donald Trump warned Republican lawmakers on Tuesday that voters could punish them if they do not approve a plan he favors to dismantle Obamacare, as pressure grew on the businessmanturned-politician to win the first major legislative battle of his presidency. In one of the few visits he has made to the U.S. Capitol since taking office two months ago, Trump told fellow

Republicans in the House of Representatives they would face “political problems” for opposing the bill that takes apart Obamacare and partially replaces it. “The president was really clear: He laid it on the line for everybody,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, the leading proponent of the bill, told reporters. Martin McGuinness, the Irish Republican Army commander who laid down his arms to become a key architect of Northern Ireland’s peace, died on Tuesday aged 66, prompting tributes from allies and former enemies alike. The face of Irish Republicanism during some of the worst moments of three decades of sectarian bloodshed that killed more than 3,600 people, McGuinness remained a figure of hate

for many pro-British Protestants until his death. But he earned widespread respect across Britain, Ireland and beyond by embracing his bitterest rivals to cement the 1998 Good Friday peace agreement and allow Northern Ireland to slowly return to normality. “He believed in a shared future, and refused to live in the past, a lesson all of us who remain should learn and live by,” former President Bill Clinton said. With a new map, Boston public school students see America’s place in the world The school district is among the first in the country to use a more accurate world map. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

The world, and the United States’ place in it, probably isn’t what you picture. Most of the world maps hanging on classroom walls in America’s schools provide a distorted view, experts say. They give the impression that, among other things, North America and Western Europe are far larger than they actually are, and that Africa and South America are significantly smaller. The Boston Public Schools system is looking to change that, and to give students a clearer perspective on the world. The school district,

which serves 56,0000 students, is among the first in the country to begin implementing what’s known as the Galls-Peters Projection map. Created in 1974, the world map shows the size of continents based on their true land-mass proportions. While it’s been around for 40 years, it isn’t widely used in classrooms. The more popular choice, and the one most Americans are familiar with, is the Mercator Projection map, which was originally created in 1569 to aid ship merchants on trade routes. Experts say the size of continents on the Mercator map are inaccurate partly because of the challenges that come from translating a sphere onto a flat grid, and partly because of its colonial roots. So, Mexico is larger than Alaska on the newer maps, not the other way around, as depicted in the

The Peters Projection map WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

older maps. The move to more accurately reflect America’s place in the world comes at a moment in time when President Donald Trump is promoting an “America First” approach. The idea that the U.S. is often portrayed as larger than it is, and other countries smaller, reflects a

bias that Boston Public Schools spokesman Dan O’Brien says the district is working to eliminate. The map change is just one step in a larger three-year initiative the district is undertaking to “decolonize the curriculum,” O’Brien said, to challenge any “implicit or historical biases” that

may be under the surface of the lessons. “We have 86 percent of our students as students of color,” he said. “We are trying to make our academics culturally proficient to all of our students — we don’t want to diminish their cultures and their background — and the

Peters Projection map is just one small way to promote culturally proficient learning in Boston Public Schools.” Another example of a distortion on the Mercator map involves Greenland, the ice-covered country that appears almost as large as Africa. In reality, Africa is about 14 times bigger. The addition of the Peters Projection map will begin with students in the second, seventh and eleventh grades. Though the Peters Projection map isn’t perfect, it is still widely regarded as a more geographically accurate depiction. The new map also won’t completely replace the Mercator model; the two will hang side by side. That way, students can see the differences and teachers can start conversations about the way world views and worldviews change over time.

Jenny Slate talks Chris Evans, finally Jenny Slate is finally, finally, opening up about her break up with Captain America himself, Chris Evans. And it will give you every single feel. Slate, 34, and Evans, 35, met while playing love interests in “Gifted.” And as she tells Vulture, she hadn’t really expected to start a romance with the Marvel star. “I first really liked Chris as a person because he is so unpretentious,” she says. “[And] to be quite honest, I didn’t think I was his type. Kate Hudson is getting hot and heavy with a new dude — sorry, Brad Pitt. Daily Mail has photos of the 37-yearold lovin’, touchin’, squeezin’ with musician Danny Fujikawa, a “long-time pal.” Mmhmm. Woody Harrelson quit pot, is kind of proud Here’s some very important news for you: Woody Harrelson is not stoned right now. Not even remotely. That’s right. The man that The Daily Beast calls “Hollywood’s favorite stoner” has given up the good stuff. The 55-year-old actor chatted with Vulture, and admitted as much: “I am a party animal … But on the other hand, I’m now extremely moderate and I actually stopped smoking

pot almost a year ago.” Impressive! After what Harrelson calls “30 solid years of just partying too f—ing hard,” the actor decided to go cold turkey because smoking makes him a monster, basically. “When you’re doing it all the time, it just becomes, well, you know. I feel like it was keeping me from being emotionally available.” Why he would want to be emotionally available in the first place, he does not say. Congratulations, I guess?

One of “MST3K’sâ€? best episodes now lives on Netix.

As we speak, the new, live-action “Beauty and the Beastâ€? is making all the money — this despite it being a near-beat-for-beat, song-for-song redo of a movie that already exists. At least the studio was adventurous enough with “Pete’s Dragon,â€? another in their new rash of remakes but one that tries something completely dierent. No, last

But it’s soulful where “B&B is calculated, modest where the other is lavish. It’ll be a classic one day. And then, in 40 years, Disney can remake it.

as Mark Renton and Sick Boy, now going by the more respectable “Simon.â€? Both have cleaned up, got off heroin, but that doesn’t mean they’ve figured life out. When Renton returns to Edinburgh, Scotland, after 20 years away, he finds that Simon is still a hustler, Ewen Bremner’s Spud is still on smack and Robert Carlyle’s Begbie, in prison since the first, and thanks to Renton, has escaped and wants vengeance. We talked to McGregor and Miller — now 45 and 44, respectively, horrifyingly enough — about getting the band back together and how aging sucks. I saw the original “Trainspottingâ€? when it came out, and I’m horriďŹ ed to ďŹ nd out 20 years have passed. How did you two handle that? Ewan McGregor: It was very much a daily part of the experience of making the film. Every day there was a “20 years agoâ€? moment, where you were faced with the passage of time — never more so than when we bumped into the people who had been cast to play us at that age. [Laughs] GETTY

Tough talk It’s really diďŹƒcult when you age, but you have to ďŹ nd some way to make peace with the fact that you can never be that energetic again, that your body’s going to decay. McGregor: Well, not yet. [Laughs] I think you could have ended that sentence with “It’s diďŹƒcult when you age,â€? full stop. Admittedly that felt really insincere to say. McGregor: But it’s quite interesting: I’ve heard Danny [Boyle, director] talk about how it really centers on male aging, and how badly we do it. There’s this myth that women age worse than men, but they’re actually quite better at it than we are. We hold onto the notion that we’re not getting older, that we’re still cool and young, for far too long. We just cling onto it for grim death.

There were five guys who had been cast in flashback scenes because they looked like us, and they were wearing our old costumes. Whenever we bumped into them it was always a bit of a shocker. Jonny Lee Miller: An even more shocking thing happened at the premiere party in Edinburgh. We

met these twins, these cute 20-something girls — who turned out to be the baby [from the original]. When you use a baby, you usually use twins so one’s not there for too long. We were talking to them and they said, “We’re the baby.â€? [Laughs] That was f—ing brutal. This is a not very happy ďŹ lm about aging. Miller: The point of the movie is you can’t be that again. Your time is done. You had that moment, but the moment’s there for another group of people. I think it was important that we weren’t trying to recapture [the original] or redo it. We couldn’t have a zany caper again. There’s no point in doing that, because your time is done.

Stay classy, Boston A Will Ferrell-themed pop-up bar will arrive on April 14. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

New York’s first and only (and now defunct) Will Ferrell tribute bar will pop-up at Umbria April 14-23. The moviethemed concept from Zach Neil and Brian Link, the co-owners of New York’s first and only (and still active) Tim Burton-inspired bar, Beetle House, is one in a series of pop-ups that will allow Stay Classy to rise again. Their team announced the Boston pop-up over the weekend via Instagram, where they’re revealing the final details in coming days The 10-day Boston location will serve Ferrellfilm-referencing cocktails, like the Glass Case

of Emotion, You’re My Boy Blue and A Whale’s Vagina. Stay Classy popped up in L.A. in November, where they hosted “Elf-themed dance parties and raised funds for Cancer for College, Ferrell’s own scholarship charity for students battling cancer. (Ferrell, however, is not directly associated with the bar.) “Boston is going to be so much better, says Neil. “We ended up being a 12-month run [in NYC] because it went really well, but the problem was, we wanted to offer more than just drinks. We wanted tapas and small bites, but the space wasn’t able to accommodate. And L.A. was really cool, but it was the same situation — just drinks. The Boston spot seats 150 (with standing room for another 150) and will be the first Stay Classy location to offer grub inspired by the “Anchor-

man’s best quotables — mainly burgers, like Ma’s Meatloaf. They’ll have a soundtrack of Ferrell’s best films on blast, while the space features a KVWN Channel 4 news set for selfies, and guest visits from Burgundy impersonators, for more selfies. “We’ve got the guy, adds Neil. “He’s the guy who works corporate parties impersonating Ron Burgundy. He reached out to us, and now he’s just coming. We can’t even say we’re hiring him, because he just told us, ‘I’m coming. I’ll be there.’ To RSVP for the upcoming Stay Classy extravaganza, leave a comment on the bar’s Facebook page with your requested reservation date and party size, douse yourself in Sex Panther and get ready to piss excellence — or, you know, something less gross.

Not long ago, nobody knew that the only U.S. State Silver Bars locked away in the private vaults of the Lincoln Treasury would be allocated to the Federated Mint for a limited release to residents in 6 states. Every single one of the 50 U.S. State Silver Bars are date numbered in the order they ratified the Constitution and were admitted into the Union beginning in the late 1700s. “As Executive Advisor to the Lincoln Treasury I get paid to deliver breaking news. So, for anyone who hasn’t heard yet, highly collectable U.S. State Silver Bars are now being handed over at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury to residents in 6 states who beat the offer deadline, which is why I pushed for this announcement to be widely advertised,” said Mary Ellen Withrow, the emeritus 40th Treasurer of the United States of America. “These bars are solid .999 pure fine silver and will always be a valuable precious metal which is why everyone is snapping up as many as they can before they’re all gone,” Withrow said. There’s one thing Withrow wants to make very clear. State residents only have two days to call the Toll Free Or-

Rapid shipments to state residents are scheduled to begin with the first calls being accepted at precisely 8:30am today. “We’re bracing for all the calls and doing everything we can to make sure no one gets left out, but the U.S. State Silver Bars are only being handed over at just the state resident minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury for the next two days. For now, residents can get the U.S. State Silver Bars at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury as long as they call before the order deadline ends,” confirmed Shissler. “With so many state residents trying to get these U.S. State Silver Bars, lines are busy so keep trying. They’ll grow on you The Fenway neighborhood isn’t only full of students and luxury high-rises — it features charming, convenient and affordable options as well. DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN

Three Boston neighborhoods worth checking out. MEGAN JOHNSON @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

On the hunt for a new apartment? Chances are you’re well-aware that rents in neighborhoods previously declared “affordable” don’t seem to be as reasonable as they used to. But that doesn’t mean you have to count those growing neighborhoods out entirely. Here are a few spots in growing neighborhoods that are worth checking out.

Fenway’s Peterborough Street Forget the Fenway neighborhood of yesteryear. The days of empty storefronts and old liquor stores are gone, while stores and restaurants like West Elm and Wahlburgers are popping up under sky-high residential buildings.

Studios in luxury buildings like the Van Ness start at $3,100 a month, but that doesn’t mean the entire neighborhood is unaffordable. If you’re trying to save a buck, avoid the residential towers popping up on Brookline Avenue and Boylston Street. Instead, check out the picturesque Peterborough and Queensbury Street neighborhoods tucked inside Park Drive. You’ll certainly find a boatload of college students and a few absentee landlords, but the prices are much more desirable if you don’t need the frills of fancy amenities. Plus, having Shaw’s, CVS and City Target just around the corner certainly doesn’t hurt.

rapidly transitioning neighborhood of Jeffries Point may be out of your price range, but fear not: Head a little deeper into Eastie to the Eagle Hill neighborhood for

better prices. “Developers have barely scratched the surface on converting multifamily triple deckers in Eagle Hill to individual condomini-

ums,” says Realtor Kevin Concannon, who works with The Steven Cohen Team at Keller Williams. “The top of Eagle Hill gets the views of the city, and the neighbor-

East Somerville

East Boston’s Eagle Hill We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: East Boston is booming. With real estate prices skyrocketing and college students flowing in like the levee broke, massive changes are afoot in the neighborhood. The most

hood has a lot of history and architectural charm, plus it is the next closest to the city and T from Maverick/Jeffries. Seems like the obvious next blossoming condo market to me.”

A multistory City Target is in the center of the new developments in Fenway.

DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN

For a neighborhood once nicknamed “Slummerville,” it’s getting pretty hard to find a reasonably priced apartment. But if you are looking to put down roots there, head to the east. “East Somerville is practically your best bet of entering the Somerville real estate market,” says O’Necia Simpson, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Cambridge. Condos cost at least $450,000, but with units going for $1 million just a few minutes away in Assembly Square, it’s not quite as painful. Expect lots of charm, creaky hardwood floors and slanted decks in two- or three-bedroom multifamily homes.

LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE

What’s the buzz? You could soon call them your (very) new home

generated plenty of news in recent months with the announcement that there will be no parking, residents aren’t entirely out in the cold. Lovejoy Wharf feeds into the whole transitoriented, futuristic city that minimizes car traffic and has North Station just a few steps away. The 157 units, which range from studios to three bedrooms, start at $750,000.

Massive real estate developments are like college students in Boston: They’re popping up on every corner. Here are three residential and commercial properties that are making headlines in 2017.

Lovejoy Wharf Just steps from the TD Garden, Lovejoy Wharf is a 15-story residential building tucked next to the Charlestown Bridge. Sales begin this April, and the condominium building will welcome tenants in June. Luxe amenities include everything from a landscaped roof terrace overlooking the ocean to a spacious wharfside health club, fitness studio and resident lounge with an adjoining billiards room, business center and children’s area. While Lovejoy Wharf

Pierce Boston In recent years, the Fenway neighborhood has become a sea of residential towers. The Trilogy Apartments, Van Ness and Fenway Triangle are just a few of the luxury residences, and Pierce Boston is set to be one of the most prominent. Located right where Brookline Avenue and Boylston Street meet, the 30-level residential tower is hard to miss, thanks to its shimmering glass exterior. With 240 rental

units and 109 condominiums, the building consists of junior one- to two-bedrooms that start at around $1 million. Oh, and their website describes itself as “daringly Boston, whatever that

means. Luxe amenities designed by CBT Architects include everything from a dog spa and a yoga studio to a rooftop pool with sky cabanas. Occupancy is slated for 2018.

Charter Realty’s Cross Street and Hanover Street development It’s a battle between the old and the new in

the North End, where it seems like most of the longtime Italian residents have been replaced by party-hungry college students. The Charter Realty development is commercial, not residential, but it’s safe to say the 5,500-square-foot development, which starts construction this spring, will have plenty of influence on the neighborhood. Not only will it take over the entire block between Salem and Hanover streets that overlooks the Greenway, but it serves as the entrance point to what traditionally was the old world aesthetic of the North End. While it has ruffled the feathers of some locals, the developers say they’re working to ensure the spaces blend into the neighborhood with brick, wood and metal typically seen on North End buildings. So far there’s no word on what will go in the three commercial spaces, but it’s safe to say locals are pushing to keep chain stores out. Remember what happened when Pinkberry infiltrated the neighborhood?

Are daily fantasy sports ready to experience second boom period? FanDuel and DraftKings are not going anywhere anytime soon. MATTHEW BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

The daily fantasy sports industry in the United States is prepared to take a second step forward after taking a giant step backwards a year and a half ago. Just prior to the start of the 2015 NFL season, it seemed every other commercial on ESPN featured DraftKings telling you that you could win “a shipload of money” and former FanDuel winners bragging about their riches. That period — August through October of 2015 — was the peak period in the history of daily fantasy. But just as fast as daily fantasy’s rise in prominence came it’s abrupt fall. The backlash from the usual anti-gambling crowd, traditional sports gambling community, politicians and people who were just plain jealous of the two companies’ meteoric climb was

insanely intense. “It was very precarious as to whether [DraftKings and FanDuel] would even survive,” explained Daniel Barbarisi, author of the new book “Dueling with Kings.” “They were on top of the world and then came under heavy fire. They almost fell apart, but then they actually managed to survive because they pulled off a series

of legislative victories at state houses around the country, and now they’re getting their game explicitly legalized — getting exceptions for it — like other industries, like horse racing already has.”

Quit your day job? Barbarisi was once the New York Yankees beat writer for The Wall Street Journal, but left the

sports journalism world in favor of becoming a daily fantasy pro. There were plenty of days, particularly early on after his change in careers, when he doubted his decision. “I was a big loser for a long time,” Barbarisi told Metro. “That was emotionally very difficult. Financially, it was very difficult. My wife would come home and

would find out that I’d lost again and it was like, ‘I just quit my job to do this?’ That was not the easiest thing.” Barbarisi eventually figured it out, but he didn’t win big playing daily fantasy baseball like he thought he would. In fact, Barbarisi said he “sucked” at baseball despite being around the game for years. “I thought I was going to be a baseball expert but I was really, really bad at it,” Barbarisi told Metro. “Baseball is probably the hardest because it lends itself to domination by the pros the easiest. Basketball too. “Football is still actually one of the easiest sports [to play daily fantasy] in terms of the variance of its outcomes. That almost makes it a fairer sport. Hockey has a lot of those same factors to it. “Soccer is the hardest to win, I think, because the game itself is a little big more esoteric and there are not many stats available as there are for American games. So the few pros who really understand how to systemize that can become

extremely good at it.”

The Trump effect It’s hard to believe the Trump administration would attempt to crack down on daily fantasy sports and sports gambling in general given the president’s history in the casino business. Even before Trump was elected, though, Barbarisi believe there was a collective shift in thinking from the general American public when it came to betting on sports. “Generally, the current trend in the way America is going is good for all these industries,” Barbarisi said. “You’re seeing the American sports leagues — they’ve already embraced daily fantasy. They’re already starting to soften their anger towards what you’d consider to be traditional sports gambling, too. I think we’re moving in a direction where daily fantasy is sort of a gateway drug to sports gambling. It’s something that’s kind of softening things up, and I believe you’re going to see legalized sports gambling in the U.S. within the next decade.

Aries Don’t complicate matters by trying to fit too much into your day. Keep your life simple and your facts straight. Stick to your plan and do things for yourself.

Libra Impulsive behavior will be difficult to curtail. Try to think before you do or say something you will live to regret. Overdoing it in any fashion will be costly.

Taurus Taking an active role in events or activities that matter to you will encourage you to use your imagination and rely on your instincts. Take care of health issues promptly.

Scorpio You’ll face problems when dealing with friends, relatives and peers. Keep your promises and be willing to work alongside others to bring about positive change.

Gemini Listen, observe and learn as you go. Don’t feel you have to be first or take a risk to impress someone. Protect your health and your financial situation.

Sagittarius Making a move or changing your surroundings will give you a boost. You don’t have to overspend if you are willing to do the work yourself.

Cancer Don’t make an impulsive move. Money matters are best handled with care and frugality. Overreacting will make matters worse when dealing with others.

Capricorn Set a steady pace and do your own thing. A disciplined approach when dealing with deadlines will help you divert someone who is trying to dismantle your plans.

Leo Observe what’s going on around you at work or among your peers, but don’t interfere. Meddling will lead to blame. Put your trust and time into getting ahead.

Aquarius Something or someone from your past will cause problems if you haven’t cleaned up unfinished business. Make a point to put things in place quickly.

Virgo Taking an energetic approach to life and interacting with people you find stimulating and inspiring will spur you to take on interesting projects or learn something new.

Pisces You’ll face some opposition if you aren’t readily available when needed. Don’t crowd your agenda with matters that someone else can take care of. EUGENIA LAST
