YATES WARNED TRUMP ON BANKS TO MOVE 9K JOBS SOUTH KOREANS VOTE FLYNN BLACKMAIL FEARS FROM UK DUE TO BREXIT FOR NEW LEADER

1

A former senior U.S. law enforcement figure said she warned President Donald Trump’s White House in January about then-national security adviser Michael Flynn because she feared he could have been open to blackmail by Russia. Sally Yates, who was briefly the acting U.S. attorney general earlier this year, told White House counsel Don McGahn

on Jan. 26 that Flynn had not been telling the truth about his contacts with Russia’s ambassador to Washington. Yates, originally appointed by former President Barack Obama’s administration, said she feared Moscow could try to blackmail Flynn because it also knew he was not being truthful about conversations with Ambassador Sergei Kislyak about U.S. sanctions on Moscow. The largest banks in London plan to move about 9,000 jobs in the next two years, public statements and information shows, as the exodus of finance jobs starts to take shape. Last week Standard Chartered and JPMorgan were the latest global banks to outline plans for their European operations after Brexit. They are among a growing number of lenders pushing ahead with plans to move operations

from London. Goldman Sachs chief executive Lloyd Blankfein said in an interview that London’s growth as a financial center could “stall” as a result of the upheaval caused by Brexit. Thirteen major banks including Goldman Sachs, UBS, and Citigroup have given an indication of how they would bulk up their operations in Europe to secure market access to the European Union’s single market when Britain leaves the bloc. South Koreans go to the polls on Tuesday to elect a new leader, looking to move on from a corruption scandal that brought down former President Park Geun-hye and shook the political and business elite to the core. Unless there is a major upset, liberal Moon Jaein — who calls for a moderate approach on North Korea, wants to reform powerful family-run conglomerates and boost fiscal

spending to create jobs — will be elected president. The vote will end months of leadership vacuum. Park was ousted on charges of bribery and abuse of power in March to become South Korea’s first democratically elected president to be forced from office. She is in jail, on trial. REUTERS

FCC WEBSITE HIT BY ATTACKS PROPOSAL

5

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission said Monday that its website was hit by deliberate denial of service attacks after the telecommunications regulator was criticized by comedian John Oliver for its plan to reverse “net neutrality” rules. The attacks came soon after Oliver on Sunday urged viewers to file electronic comments with the FCC opposing the plan unveiled by

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai to reverse rules implemented under President Barack Obama that boosted government regulatory powers over internet service providers. Pai’s plan faces an initial vote on May 18. Oliver in his HBO show “Last Week Tonight,” owned by Time Warner Inc., urged viewers to use a website purchased by the show that takes visitors directly to an FCC page to file comments. REUTERS

Dogged protesters who say General Electric is getting unfair benefits from the state attended a groundbreaking ceremony for GE’s new Boston headquarters on Monday morning. Mayor Marty Walsh and Gov. Charlie Baker joined General Electric executives for the occasion at the site of the company’s new soon-to-be headquarters, called Innovation Point. But behind a nearby fence blocked from view by signs decorated with renderings of the new development, protesters opposed to the project tried to lift their placards and signs for Walsh, Baker and GE to see. “I think they heard us. I think we broke through while they were trying to talk about all the wonderful things they’re doing when the state of Massachusetts is facing a large budget shortfall,â€? said Eli Gerzon of the Make GE

The company began searching for a new home after lawmakers in Connecticut, where its previous headquarters were located, passed a budget that increased taxes by $1.2 billion over two years. Suspect in South Boston killings ordered held at Monday arraignment Bampumim Teixeira heard his charges from a hospital bed. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

kristin.toussaint@metro.us

The suspect in the slaying of two doctors in their South Boston home has been charged with two counts of murder, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Bampumim Teixeira, a 30-year-old Chelsea man, was ordered held without bail Monday pending his trial for the killing of Lina Bolanos and Richard Field. His next court date is June 8. Teixeira was arraigned while in a hospital bed at Tufts Medical Center on Monday afternoon by South Boston Municipal Court Judge Michael Bolden and Suffolk Chief

pack filled with jewelry at the apartment that is presumed to belong to Bolanos, Conley confirmed in a press conference Monday. Police and SWAT responded to the 11th-floor apartment around 8:30 p.m. Friday night, where the couple was found dead. A friend of Field contacted police to report a possibly robbery in the couple’s home after Field sent a cryptic text message, according to Conley. Police found an intruder, later determined to be Teixeira, in a dark-

ened hallway and shot Teixeira, believing him to be armed, Conley said. Earlier media reports inaccurately reported Teixeira first opened fire on police. “Officers believed this intruder either pointed or drew a weapon on them in this darkened hallway,” Conley said. “After speaking with [Police] Commissioner William Evans, we decided it was important to correct the record on this information as soon as possible.” Conley said the investigation is ongoing and nothing is being inferred

from this information about the altercation with police. Teixeira’s record includes a pair of larceny convictions, according to the DA’s office. In August 2014, Teixeira passed a note to a teller at a Boston bank demanding money. Two years later, in June 2016, Teixeira committed the same crime at the same location. After he was identified for that incident, he volunteered responsibility for the 2014 crime to officials. Teixeira was recently released from prison after serving nine months for that crime. Three days into the investigation, Conley said police had uncovered no information that connects Teixeira to Field or Bolanos. Police are also investigating a motive for the crime. “Nor is there currently any evidence to explain why he would attack them so viciously at their own home,” Conley said. Field worked at North Shore Pain Management. On its website, a statement from North Shore Pain Management addresses the “tragic loss of Richard Field.” Bolanos was a pediatric anesthesiologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and taught at Harvard Medical School.

Meghan Markle got a full invite to Pippa Middleton’s wedding I’m really getting into the whole Prince Harry and Meghan Markle thing. After weeks of confusion over whether or not the “Suits” actress would attend Pippa Middleton’s wedding, The Telegraph and Express are now report-

ing that Markle will be attending the full wedding as Prince Harry’s date. Squee! First, there were rumors that Markle wouldn’t be invited to Pippa’s wedding ceremony at all. Later, a source told People that Middleton was imposing a no-ring, no bring rule for the formal vow exchange. Now, Pippa and her soon to be husband, James Matthews, are making an exception for Markle, who isn’t engaged to Harry. Well, not yet.

Prince Harry, 32, and Markle, 35, made their debut as a couple over the weekend. Afterward, they were caught making out. Royals, they’re just like us! And in March, a friend of the couple told Us Weekly that the two would be engaged by the end of the summer. “Meghan feels a move to London is inevitable,” says the source. I’ll take that with a grain of salt — but I’ll take it, because I want these two to be together forever so badly.

Brad Pitt went to rehab, probably Last week, Brad Pitt lowkey admitted to being a hipster, and told the world he was sober. Now Page Six has learned that Pitt didn’t do it all alone: The 53-year-old reportedly attended a special VIP facility for professional help. Sources — could be anyone at this point, but my guess is Cruella DeVil from “101 Dalmatians,” just ’cause — tell the site that Pitt attended meetings and therapy sessions at a discreet facility in a private residence. The center, designed for highprofile Hollywood fig-

ures, was set up by some wealthy anonymous person who suffered with substance abuse issues and wanted to help others in a similar position. Well, it’s certainly rude if someone from a private facility leaked this information. But it’s great that Pitt is making moves to like, improve himself — even if it took Jolie divorcing him for him to get it together. Nevertheless, I am so proud of you, William Bradley Pitt. If you ever need a shoulder to cry on, be a dear and let me know.

for clapping back, and has no problem dismissing any tomfoolery or negativity. Naturally, the 36-year-old actress took to Twitter to defend herself. “For the record, I wear what I want, when I want. News flash it’s MY body. #thankstho.”

This isn’t the first time Metz has stood up for herself when it comes to her weight. But also? The fact is that she looked very good and that dress is fire emoji worthy. So Bravo, Metz. Bravo.

David Spade & Naya Rivera are still happening Rivera is wearing Marchesa, because of course she is. Spade is trying his best in a blue suit and tie,

and it looks fine. For what it’s worth: Rivera and Spade originally met on the set of an upcoming comedy,

“Mad Families,” a film written and starring Spade himself. Coincidence! Charlie Sheen also has a starring role, so you can guess just how classy this film will be. That movie, much like this couple, is gonna be a hard pass for me.

FILM

Superheroes who deserve their own films The summer movie season is here, and with it the usual glut of comic book movies. The genre won’t be going away anytime soon, but eventually Hollywood will need more superheroes. Here are 10 that deserve their own stand-alone romp — and not just as part of some jam-packed installment. MATT PRIGGE

MARVEL

Domino She’s going to swing by for the “Deadpool” sequel, but the X-Force member sounds awesome on her own. She’s a mutant who can change the probability of events happening. OK, that doesn’t sound exciting on its face, but when combined with her mercenary skills — and cool makeup, with a big black circle over her left eye — she’s like another Black Widow.

Arm-Fall-Off-Boy “The Lego Batman Movie” made a decent joke out of unearthing untold obscure, nonsensical yet totally real villains, like Condiment King, who pulverizes his prey with squirts of ketchup and mustard. But heroes can be ridic, too. Take Arm-Fall-Off-Boy, an ’80s DC creation who can tear off his arms and then beat people with them. Granted, this might be more suitable for a comedy. (Imagine Dax Sheppard doing it.) But a guy who can beat people with his own limbs does sound pretty badass.

DC

Hawkeye He’s the Avenger no one cares about — the dude who can just shoot arrows real good. But give the guy a chance! And no matter how silly Jeremy Renner can seem in real life (check out his weirdo app) and no matter how many franchises he fails to usurp, he’s a terrific actor who may one day find the right blockbuster to helm.

Question Ayn Rand isn’t as cool as she was about 10 years ago, and for that we can all thank the stars. But maybe the studios can do something with comics’ most Randian semihero. Created by objectivism-lover Steve Ditko in the late ’60s, Question was an investigative journalist-turned-crime fighter with a blank mask who saw things in stark black and white. He was basically a psychopath, but, you know, for good. No surprise that he was the inspiration for psycho Rorschach in Alan Moore’s “Watchmen.”

DC

Swamp Thing Technically, the DC planthumanoid has already had two movies, one helmed by Wes Craven (and a campy sequel that became a cable movie staple back in the days when no one cared about comic book movies). But SW is a fascinating character, especially during Alan Moore’s career-making run of the comics back in the early ’80s, when he battled monsters from hell, went to space, hung out with Constantine and wrestled with existential dread.

MARVEL

MARVEL

Squirrel Girl We desperately want to see more female superheroes. Plus, we also like squirrels. Hence, our inclusion of Squirrel Girl — a ’90s Marvel staple whose adventures are more lighthearted than anguished. And yes, she has a giant squirrel tail and can talk to the animals.

DC

MARVEL

Black Widow Fans have been clamoring for years for a movie entirely about Scarlett Johansson’s Russian-born ass-kicker — and regular movie-stealer — but so far to no avail. Maybe if MRA bros flock to “Wonder Woman” this summer, it’ll actually happen. (Though the quick death of “Ghost in the Shell” has probably put a damper on ScarJo’s ability to open a movie huge, despite her attempts to distract us from it.)

of the series (at least not yet) but it is delightful to witness and frankly I would very much like more of it immediately, thank you very much. In last week’s episode, we only get a brief glimpse of him as he drives silently in the rain, low-key brooding while Offred explodes in the backseat. She bangs against the glass that separates them, screaming obscenities and venting her frustrations and — because he’s just like a great listener — he simply lets her have her moment without trying to interrupt it with his words or his mansplaining. Because he cares. In the third episode, his face gets so close to Offred’s face that sexual tension bounced from my television, into my forehead and knocked me out cold. JK! But it

I tried IVF and it almost killed me Author Nadine Kenney Johnstone shares the horror story that was her path to conceive. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

“When my husband and I went to our fertility specialist and she told us that we would be good candidates for IVF, we started on the typical journey,” remembers author Nadine Kenney Johnstone. But her experience would be far from typical. In 2012, the then-28year-old sought infertility treatment after trying naturally for almost a year. She and her husband, Jamie, were living in suburban Massachusetts, where he worked as a chef and she taught English at Framingham State University. While many women who pursue IVF are well into their 30s, the young couple had extenuating circumstances. Jamie was a testicular-cancer survivor, and an analysis had revealed the chemotherapy treatments had compromised his sperm motility. At the same

time, Johnstone, who had recently stopped taking birth control, discovered she wasn’t ovulating. Johnstone began with the egg-retrieval procedure, a standard precursor to IVF in which a woman receives hormone injections that stimulate her ovaries to release extra egg follicles, which are then harvested and inseminated in a petri dish. B u t when she got home f r o m the procedure, she felt d i z z y and nauseated, with sharp pains in her abdomen. She started crying and throwing up. Her husband rushed her to the ER, where an ultrasound of her abdomen revealed that she was bleeding internally. She went into emergency surgery. “Unbeknownst to me, my left ovary never

clotted after the retrieval,” she explains. The surgeons sutured her ovary, and after a few days, she left the hospital with a 6-inch scar, from her belly button down to her pubic bone, and began a painful, prolonged recovery.

Johnstone and her now 4-year-old son, Geo.

According to fertility expert Dr. Brooke Hodes-Wertz of NYU Langone, what happened to Johnstone is extremely rare. “The egg retrieval procedure is minimally invasive and

there’s less than a 1 percent chance of bleeding and infection,” she tells us. What’s more common is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, a condition which can occur due to an oversaturation of hormones, and can cause abdominal pain, nausea and, in severe cases, blood clots and kidney failure. The egg-retrieval setback was only the beginning of Johnstone’s troubles. While the typical next step of IVF would be to implant the fertilized embryo into her uterus, Johnstone was still very much physically — and mentally — recovering. Instead, they froze the embryos and waited six months to try again. Six months later, things still didn’t go as planned. “In order to prepare your body for the transfer, you have to take estrogen,” Johnstone says. But that gave her constant headaches, and even impaired the vision in her left eye. “We had to cancel that

The next chapter That August, Johnstone and her husband made what would be their final appointment with a fertility specialist. “I was just so done with IVF,” Johnstone remembers. “I asked the doctor, ‘What else can we do?’ And he just shook his head.” It turns out she was pregnant while sitting in his office, but she didn’t know it. She had conceived naturally at the age of 29. Johnstone has detailed the harrowing but ultimately hopeful experience in her memoir, “Of This Much I’m Sure,” out this month on She Writes Press. The now-33year-old lives in Chicago with her family, where she teaches English at Loyola University and Jamie works as a project manager at a corporate signage company. Their son, Geo, is now 4 years old. She and Jamie are un-

cycle.” Three months later, Johnstone tried again and was able to successfully transfer a couple embryos. “But either my body rejected them or they rejected me, and I didn’t become preg-

certain whether they’ll have more kids. “I know I would never try IVF again,” she says. “I can’t go down that road again, for my own sanity.” Johnstone’s biggest takeaway from the experience: realizing how important it was “to reach out and share our pain with other people and ask for comfort.” “When I was at the lowest point, I got an email from my husband’s cousin Amy. She’s a life coach and a doula. Her first sentences were: ‘You will have a baby, of this much I am sure,’” she recalls, citing the line that inspired her book’s title. “I cannot tell you how hopeful and uplifting it was just to hear someone speak in affirmative, confident language,” she says. “It gave us the hope and endurance we needed to keep going. So, speak. Speak to yourself, to other people. But whatever you do, do not keep this journey a secret.”

nant from it,” she says. (IVF varies from person to person. While some women become pregnant after the first cycle, it’s not uncommon for others to require multiple cycles before conceiving.)

OLYNYK A ‘DIRTY’ PLAYER? A guy named “Green” just may hate the Celtics more than any other NBA player. Warriors forward Draymond Green caught flak for trash-talking C’s great Paul Pierce earlier this season, saying, “You thought you was Kobe?” in reference to Pierce’s farewell tour. This week, Green went after current Celtic Kelly Olynyk. “Kelly Olynyk is a dirty player, man,” Green said on his podcast. “I don’t respect guys like that. I mean, I know he’s not, like, the greatest player of all time, so maybe you feel like you got to like do that, but you don’t like — just dirty.” Ouch. Green made reference to Olynyk “yanking” Cavs forward Kevin Love’s shoulder out of place two years ago. It’s wholly hypocritical, considering

Daddy Ball defended the ridiculous price tag on Fox Sports’ “The Undisputed” on Monday. “The fact that people are losing sight – they’re looking at the price tag and not understanding that Lonzo’s shoe is symbolic,” Ball said. like a rolled ankle or something. A decade ago I bought Stephon Marbury’s sneakers, “Starburys.” I thought I was being ironic (just as dumb as being symbolic, I guess). Marbury sold the sneakers for just $15, providing a cheaper alternative to your typical Nike sneaker, which

would go for around $75. Well, I got what I paid for. I rolled my ankle big time playing pickup hoop the very first time I wore them. I was on crutches for a week. The sneaker biz is a dirty one for sure – one in which Daddy Ball seems perfectly comfortable in.

Schilling basically thinks that Jones made up the story in which he was called the N-word at Fenway last week. Sabathia — the Yankees pitcher —

said that Fenway Park is the only ballpark he’s been called the Nword in his MLB career. LeBron James said he “can’t recall ever hearing something that was racist” while playing in Boston. And here is what Pedro had to say (via SI.com): “Fenway is a place where I feel more comfortable than

any other place, more than my own house. Honestly, I could take a nap in center field and feel that I am right at home, so it shocks me a great deal that Adam Jones was called something like that at my field. I don’t think that is someone who belongs at Fenway, at my field. He is not a true Bostonian.”

Celtics need to figure out Wall in a hurry Wizards star John Wall has been superb against the Celtics this series. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

Wizards guard John Wall has been in the NBA since 2010 but it’s taken seven years for him to have an official coming out party in the playoffs. Wall has arrived this postseason, and so far in the Washington-Boston series, he’s been more consistent than Celtics star Isaiah Thomas. Thomas had that monster 53-point outburst in Game 2, but in Game 3 he scored just 13 points and on Sunday night in Game 4, he tallied 19. Nineteen is a

good night for most, but Thomas has raised the bar on his own offensive game this season. Meanwhile, Wall dropped 40 in Game 2, had 24 in Game 3 and 27 in Game 4. He’s also had double-digit assist games in three of the four games this series. Wall was equally as impressive last round. In the Wizards’ sixgame series against the Atlanta Hawks, the 26-yearold Wall averaged 29.5 points per game and 10.3 assists per game. He has been on fire for a month now. In this series, the Wizards have shown that they’re capable of containing Thomas. Unfortunately for Celtics fans, the C’s haven’t shown the ability to be able to contain Wall in the four

games thus far (Game 5 Wednesday night at TD Garden). During the regular season, the Celtics had some success against Wall. In the Celtics’ 117108 win in Boston on Jan. 11 (which involved the memorable Jae CrowderWall finger pointing and slap session), Wall scored a season-low nine points. The excuse emanating from Washington after that ugly performance by Wall (4-of-21 shooting) was that he was dealing with a “jammed finger and a “sore wrist. The injury hardly affected him three nights later, though, when he dropped 25 on Philly. Nonetheless, whatever worked for the Celtics four months ago against Wall and the Wizards is not working

now. They need to find a solution and find it fast. The C’s made some great adjustments in their series against Chicago, particularly when it came to the Bulls’ top scorer. In the final four games of the series (all

Games 3-6 of that series, and he will again have to play a critical role in stopping the opposing team’s best player in this series, or else the Celtics will be on summer break by this time next week.

Aries When dealing with personal relationships, don’t hold back. Share your feelings and be open about what you want to see happen.

Libra Consider the recent circumstances that have unfolded. Having a good understanding of what has transpired will make it easier to find a workable solution.

Taurus The more you do, the better you will feel about taking on bigger and better opportunities. Strive to improve things instead of just maintaining them.

Scorpio Taking a creative approach to life, love and the search for happiness is encouraged. Making changes that better suit your current situation should be considered.

Gemini Personal progress is encouraged. Don’t trust what others say or do. Make physical and personal alterations that you feel are the right way to go.

Sagittarius Helping someone in need is a nice gesture, but don’t take control. Your honest opinion and suggestions will be sufficient. Leave time to explore your interests.

Cancer Approach your responsibilities with pride. Make an appointment or lunch date with someone who can offer you a diverse way to use your skills.

Capricorn An emotional situation will leave you feeling uncertain and confused. Take a step back and go over all the details of what’s transpired before you make a move.

Leo An unorthodox investment will grab your attention. Consider the consequences. It isn’t likely to pan out well for you due to someone’s misrepresentation.

Aquarius Don’t invest in something prematurely. An emotional issue concerning a loved one will lead to an unusual request or unexpected gift or promise.

Virgo Deal with partnership concerns. Don’t look for an obvious solution. Try something new that will capture the attention of the person you are trying to persuade.

Pisces Take care of pending legal issues so that you can get on with projects you want to pursue. An agreement will encourage you to take on more responsibilities. EUGENIA LAST
