TRUMP ASKED COMEY TO CLOSE FLYNN PROBE

PLANE VANISHES OFF SOURCE: GARLAND NOT BAHAMAS, FOUR MISSING INTERESTED IN FBI JOB

President Donald Trump asked then-FBI Director James Comey to shut down an investigation into ties between then-White House national security adviser Michael Flynn and Russia, The New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing a Comey memo. “I hope you can let this go,” Trump told Comey, according to two people who read the memo, the Times reported. An

associate of Comey who has seen the memo told Reuters that the details of the document as reported by The New York Times were accurate. REUTERS

A small airplane with four people aboard has vanished en route to Florida from Puerto Rico and a search is underway near the Bahamas, the Coast Guard said. Crews were scouring the waters 37 miles east of Eleuthera, Bahamas, in an attempt to locate Jennifer Blumin and Nathan Ulrich, both from New York, and her two sons, ages 10 and 4, the Coast Guard said on its website. The MU-2B plane

was reported lost after failing to arrive on Monday at Titusville, Florida, 40 miles west of Orlando on Florida’s Atlantic Coast. It had departed Borinquen, Puerto Rico, at about 11 a.m. local time Monday. Miami Air Traffic Control reported losing radar and radio contact with the plane at 2:10 p.m. Monday. The Coast Guard said on Tuesday afternoon that they found a debris field near the Bermuda Triangle. REUTERS

U.S. appeals court judge Merrick Garland, turned away by the Senate last year for a Supreme Court post, is not interested in serving as FBI director, two sources said, even as the top Senate Republican recommended him for the job. Garland, the chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, has told people around him he “loves his job and is not interested in leaving the

judiciary,” said one of the sources familiar with the judge’s thinking. The two sources spoke on condition of anonymity. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he has mentioned Garland to President Donald Trump as a possible successor to James Comey, who Trump fired last week as FBI chief. REUTERS

Facebook Inc.’s Instagram has souped up its camera with quirky face-tracking filters, adding another feature similar to one offered by social media rival Snap Inc.’s Snapchat. Instagram users will now be able to choose from eight filters including koala ears that move and twitch as well as math equations that spin to create humorous effects

for their photos or videos. Other new features include a rewind mode for videos, which will allow users to play video in reverse, and hashtag stickers to visit hashtag pages. Facebook has been amping up its camera tool to take on Snapchat’s features such as disappearing messages and face-tracking filters, which are hugely popular among its teenaged and millennial users. Melanie Colon would have turned 28 today. This birthday marks five years since she was murdered, leaving her son motherless. “She has a son that misses her every damn day,” said Ralphiee Colon, 22, Melanie’s brother. “It’s messed up for my nephew to wake up without his mom. He still asks about her every day. He was 4 when she died. He’s 9 years old now. … My sister was an amazing person. She should have been cherished.” Melanie Colon went missing on May 8, 2012, after going out with Reynaldo Torres. Her body was discovered in Juniata Park four days later on Mother’s Day. Torres’ remains were found a year later. The Inquirer reported that those remains were found thanks to evidence on the iPad of disgraced former homicide Detective Ronald Dove — who was under investigation at the time for helping his girlfriend cover up a murder. “A year into the case, we found out there was a detective involved, and he had information on his iPad which led police to Reynaldo’s body,” Colon said. He has been waiting since 2012 for Dove, 44, to be sentenced. But Dove will only serve 30 days in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy and obstruction for helping his girlfriend escape arrest for the killing of her ex-boyfriend. His plea agreement got him 23 months in prison,

but parole after just 30 days with three years of reporting probation. Dove, free on $25,000 bail, goes to prison on July 24. “It’s not right,” Colon said. “If my brother had hot urine, he goes to jail for six months. You find evidence on someone’s iPad who only gets 30 days? I’m mad at the judge, too; I mean, are you blind?” But what seems like a slap on the wrist doesn’t affect Colon’s opinion of the case. “If I saw him, I would ask him, ‘Why did you have the information about Reynaldo being deceased in your iPad? What happened to my sister? If you knew nothing, there wouldn’t have been any information in your iPad,’” he said. “They say

“She has a son that misses her every damn day.” Ralphiee Colon

they don’t know what happened to both of their bodies. It is just so confusing. How do you give a man 30 days when you have information?” The police department did not respond to requests for an update on whether Dove provided information related to Melanie’s death. Ralphiee Colon is staying strong for his family. He will be holding a birthday celebration for his sister on Friday. “It doesn’t upset me that the homicide department doesn’t keep me updated. I keep updated. Social media is a blessing for me,” said Colon, who has built a cult following on Facebook and Instagram. “I keep going for my sister. I know she’s proud of me.”

Ask anyone, Philadelphia is a food town. Even in the hills of Appalachia or along the expanses of the Mojave Desert, if you hear the word “Philly, it will more often than not be followed by the word “cheesesteak. But food in the City of Brotherly Love means much more than our greasy, meaty, cheeseslathered chef d’oeuvre. The city is home to a rich tapestry of culinary delights, from high-end fine dining to delicious specialty cuisine at smaller eateries. Earlier this month, three Philadelphia chefs and restaurateurs won James Beard Awards — reputed as the Oscars of the culinary arts — during a ceremony held in Chicago. On Monday, Mayor Jim Kenney honored these three chefs and restaurateurs — Michael Solomonov, chef and co-owner of Zahav and Federal Donuts; Stephen Starr, owner of several Philadelphia restaurants, including Barclay Prime, Parc and Frankford Hall; and Greg Vernick, chef and owner of Vernick

Food and Drink — during a program with the culinary students at Murrell Dobbins CTE High School in North Philadelphia. Kenney presented the three with mayoral citations and ceremonial Liberty Bells. “I am truly honored to have these talented James Beard Award winners representing our great city, and am thrilled to connect these top food professionals with our culinary students at Dobbins, Kenney said in a statement. “We applaud these creative visionaries who build businesses that provide jobs and pathways to great careers, as well as raise the profile of Philadelphia as a food destination. At the James Beard Awards, Solomonov won the award for outstanding chef, Starr received an outstanding restaurateur award and Vernick received best chef of the Mid-Atlantic Region. During Monday’s event at Murrell Dobbins CTE High School at 2150 W. Lehigh Ave, which is one of the city’s first community schools — an initiative funded by the Philadelphia soda tax, students offered the restaurateurs samples of their own cuisine for review and were able to participate in a panel with the chefs in order to learn more about the chefs’ work and motivations.

The president has been battling back against the controversies surrounding his presidency. GETTY IMAGES

Adviser H.R. McMaster held a news conference and called the story “false.”

Tuesday morning America woke up to tweets from POTUS declaring his “absolute right” to share information with Russia, adding that he wants “Russia to greatly step up their fight against ISIS and terrorism.”

Tuesday afternoon McMaster did not

deny that the information is classified, and he would not definitively say whether or not the president openly gave up top-secret information. He called the president’s conversation with the Russians “appropriate,” adding that POTUS couldn’t have revealed the source because he hadn’t been briefed to that extent. The main issue for McMaster appeared to be the fact that

the topic of Trump’s conversation had been leaked.

Tuesday evening The New York Times reported that the information Trump shared with Russia was provided by Israel, a U.S. ally in the Middle East. There is a concern that Russia could pass the information to its close ally, Iran, which is considered Israel’s main threat in the region.

Who is vulnerable? Anyone using Windows is vulnerable, experts said — Apple and Linux operating systems are not affected. That means anyone, from your home computer to hospitals or any company network.Â

By now, you’ve probably read about WannaCry, the ransomware responsible for cyberattacks worldwide that might be orchestrated by hackers in North Korea. But what exactly is it and who is at risk? We spoke with an expert from a cybersecurity company: Jack Danahy, CTO of Barkly.

Some of the WannaCry code is similar to past North Korean hacks, some say. PIXABAY

photos. If you don’t pay by the designated time — usually in Bitcoin, which is an anonymous currency — the data is deleted. Why is WannaCry so eective? “What makes WannaCry different and why it spreads so rapidly is that it takes advantage of a vulnerability in an earlier released version

of Microsoft software, Danahy said. WannaCry uses an exploit (a sequence of commands that starts an attack) to take advantage of this vulnerable software. The exploit was released about two months ago by a group called Shadow Brokers, who said that they took this tool from the National Security Agency.

WannaCry is slowing down, so is there still reason to worry? In a word: Yes. There could be more attacks to come, Danahy said. Remember the exploit that made WannaCry so pervasive to so many different computers by taking advantage in the software’s vulnerability? “The people who released these exploits into the wild had gone silent for some time and just popped up again following WannaCry, Danahy said. “We see that they’re now saying that they’re going to be selling new exploits starting in June. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

Oregon man charged with decapitating mom on Mother’s Day A blood-covered man carrying the severed head of his mother and a knife, walked into an Oregon grocery store on Mother’s Day and stabbed a clerk before being subdued, local law enforcement officials said. Joshua Lee Webb, 36, faces charges of murder in the death of his mother, Tina Marie Webb, 59, and attempted murder for the attack on the clerk, Michael Wagner, who was recovering from his wounds in a hospital, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Department. Webb is being held in the Clackamas County Jail, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement on Monday.

Customers fled the Estacada Harvest Market Thriftway in Estacada, Oregon on Sunday morning and called police after Webb entered carrying the head, according to local press reports. After Wagner, 66, was stabbed, he and other store employees subdued Webb and held him until police arrived, the Sheriff’s Department said. At about the same time, police said they also responded to a call at the Webb home in Colton, about 12 miles away, where they found Webb’s mother dead. Webb lived with his parents, they said. Police did not provide any details on what led to Tina Marie

Are Kim and Kanye calling it quits? Kim Kardashian and Kanye West could be headed toward divorce. Or at least, that’s what some not-that-reputable sources say. David Lynch films to stream before ‘Twin Peaks’ Bingeing to catch up before the show’s return this weekend? Why not go deeper into the mind of its iconoclastic co-creator? MATT PRIGGE

“MULHOLLAND DR. - NETFLIX INSTANT

Noami Watts and Laura Harring UNIVERSAL PICTURES

It was almost David Lynch’s third TV show (after the quickly canceled “On the Airâ€?). Initially he’d ďŹ lmed “Mulholland Dr.â€? as a pilot for ABC. Naomi Watts played a perky Midwestern gal who teams up with a mysterious amnesiac (Laura Elena Harring) to investigate another curious mystery. ABC heads hated it — but that wasn’t the end of “Mulholland Dr.â€? French ďŹ nanciers slipped Lynch enough money to turn the aborted show into a movie. What Lynch did next was Lynch-level bizarre: He simply tacked on a 45-minute ending to the pilot, which remained untouched. In essence, it’s a TV show that suddenly turns into a movie — a great movie, packed with one fantastic scene after another. If we lost another potential “Twin Peaks,â€? then at least we gained a ďŹ lm masterpiece. (And it was voted by the BBC as the best movie of the last decade.)

“TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME HULU

It was booed at Cannes. Audiences ignored it. Lynch’s career was presumed to be dead. But the years have been kind to “Twin Peaks’ 1992 prequel movie, released one year after the show was unceremoniously bounced from the airwaves. As early as 1997, David Foster Wallace was defending it, arguing that it’s a devastating look at the deeply, wildly troubled Laura Palmer (a fearless Sheryl Lee), who struggled to be both the most popular girl in school and a coke-addled, self-destructive menace. Lynch has said seeing “Fire Walk with Me is a prerequisite to understanding the show’s third season. There’s another reason to give it a chance.

Sheryl Lee as the very much alive Laura Palmer JANUS FILMS

“ERASERHEAD - NETFLIX INSTANT

Jack Nance, aka Pete Martell from “Twin Peaks JANUS FILMS

Lynch’s ďŹ rst feature is still his best — his most focused mood piece, even if it often deďŹ es description. Still, don’t go in simply trying to interpret it. You don’t decode “Eraserheadâ€?; you experience it. It’s a waking nightmare in which Jack Nance — aka “Peaksâ€?’ sweet Pete Martell — plays a sad sack living in a vaguely postapocalyptic hellscape with his eternally crying monster-child. A midnight movie sensation whose fans included Mel Brooks (who hired Lynch to helm “The Elephant Manâ€?), it’s freaky just as much at home as it is projected on a grimy print in a theater. Do us a favor, though: Due to that relentlessly nervejangling sound design, watch it loud.

DAVID LYNCH SHORTS - FILMSTRUCK

If you want to plunge deep into Lynch’s CV, try the handful of shorts and oddities dwelling on FilmStruck. Many of these hail from his pre-“Eraserheadâ€? art school days, including the nightmarish “The Grandmotherâ€? and the installation piece “Six Men Getting Sick,â€? which is exactly as advertised. Then there’s “Premonitions Following an Evil Deed.â€? Made in 1995, it runs only 52 seconds long and was shot on the world’s oldest ďŹ lm camera. (It was made for the all-star ďŹ lmmaker anthology ďŹ lm “Lumiere and Company,â€? which rang in the centenary of cinema.) But just under a minute is all it needs to be as haunting and perplexing as “Eraserhead.â€?

Heath Ledger was much more than an actor A new film uncovers his quest to create. JENNIFER LOGUE @jenniferlogue

More than nine years have passed since the untimely death of Heath Ledger. Best known for his iconic roles as Ennis in “Brokeback Mountain and The Joker in “The Dark Knight (which earned him an Academy Award posthumously), speculation continues to swirl around his passing, with many subscribing to the belief that he was dragged down to a dark place by his craft. A documentary his life and work, “I Am Heath Ledger, is anything but dark, however, portraying Ledger as a passionate artist, chock full of “joie de vivre. “He was having the time of his life — he was enjoying it. He was at the top of his game as far as

he was concerned, says filmmaker Derik Murray, who’d been interested in exploring Ledger’s life for some time. The documentary reveals many surprising details about the actor’s life — one being that acting was only a small part of his artistic output. Ledger burned even more brightly behind the camera as a photographer and director. “His main goal was to become a director, says Murray. “He was directing these music vid-

It was so exciting and fresh and so filled with life that in the editing suite, we were like, Heath is a codirector in this movie we’re making, Murray says. Ledger’s family and

long list of friends (including actor Naomi Watts and musician Ben Harper) provide commentary on his truly extraordinary life and career in the film. “So many people loved him, and we wanted the world to know, Murray says. The documentary also provides inspiration to the artist in all of us to go out there and in Ledger’s own words,

HughE Dillon of Philly Chit Chat and Lynsie Solomon of EFS Networks have teamed up to create The Philadelphia Social Calendar (TPSC) — a website where you can find all of Philly’s many social events in one convenient place. According to Dillon, this idea is over 10 years in the making. “I bought the URL back in 2007. I had just moved back from NYC to Philadelphia and I got the inspiration to do a daily blog [Philly Chit Chat] about what’s going on in Philadelphia’s social scene and thought it would be great to also list all of the events happening in the city, he says. Back then, however, there wasn’t much of a Philly social scene.

Described in 1910 as “thoroughly livable” — what a compliment, huh? — we think this luxurious French farmhouse is so much more. Along the winding Lincoln Drive in Chestnut Hill, this turn-of-thecentury urban homestead is a spacious stone oasis for city dwellers. With its rustic stone exterior and lush green property, you’ll forget — if only for a moment — that a bustling Center City is just a few miles away. The charming 7801 Lincoln Drive boasts of four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a whop-

ping 4,550 square feet. While its distinguishable and historic exterior has been lovingly maintained, the interior retains its rustic character while lending to modern amenities. It’s currently listed for $950,000.

Be close to the city and feel like you’re in the country. ZILLOW

Original oak beams and woodwork, original pine flooring, views of the green grounds and a massive fieldstone

fireplace in the living room add an element of warmth to what will become your family’s favorite room. In the kitchen, natural light floods over stainless steel and granite surfaces. Luckily, “historic” doesn’t always mean cramped: enjoy two pantry closets, a breakfast room and formal dining room for all your entertaining needs. Upstairs, a master bedroom with a dressing r o o m , three other bedrooms, a den and three full bathrooms round out the upstairs living space — all with stunning views of the picturesque greenery. Had enough of the countryside? Center City is a 15 minute train ride, and this home is just blocks from the station.

76ers nab 3rd pick in 2017 NBA draft It wasn’t the best night for the Sixers in the NBA draft lottery Thursday night. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Decades ago, in the 1980s when the Lakers, Celtics and Sixers were the dominant franchises in the NBA, the idea of the trio having the top three picks in the NBA draft was laughable. Now it’s a reality as the draft order has been set. The Sixers earned their forth straight top 3 pick in Tuesday night’s NBA Draft lottery, nabbing the third spot — interestingly enough — in a swap with the Kings, who overcame

the odds to get the third pick despite being projected outside the top 5. But thanks to the genius and foresight of Sam Hinkie and a trade seasons ago for Nik Stauskas, the Sixers had the right to swap picks with Sacramento. So instead of the fifth overall pick, Philly has the third spot — the same spot at which they selected both Joel Embiid and Jahlil Okafor in 2014 and 2015. The Sixers also failed to get lucky enough to win a second top 5 pick, as the Lakers fell in the second spot and will differ their first round pick to Philly in 2018. The Celtics will lead things off and are on the clock, determining whether they’ll go with Markelle Fultz or Lonzo Ball. A po-

After winning the first pick (Ben Simmons) last year, the Sixers were relegated to third in the draft order Tuesday night.

At the event prior to Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, Embiid — who rolled his eyes when the Sixers were slotted No. 3, said: “We are on the right track, this year if I had been healthy I think we had a chance to make the playoffs. But we have to keep trusting the process.”

tential Ball to L.A. match is irresistible and will likely be a national storyline up until the June 22 draft. Philly will then have its choice, most likely, of Malik Monk or Josh Jackson. The pick is one space higher than their finish in the standings with the fourth worst record in the NBA.

Flyers’ goalie situation for 2017 hardly set What does the future hold for the Flyers and goalies Michal Neuvirth and Steve Mason? ERIC GOLDSTEIN @EricEsponda sports@metro.us

As the Flyers head into the offseason, General Manager Ron Hextall will only need to fill a couple of job openings, such as depth on the fourth line, a couple of defensive spots and a backup goalie. However, most of the vacancies will likely go to players from within the organization, includ-

ing the second overall pick in next month’s NHL Draft, or a minor free agent signing. The one gray area, though, is in goal, which bears watching and includes interesting subplots. Michal Neuvirth, coming off a dismal season, signed a teamfriendly two-year, $5 million deal in March and is penciled in as the team’s No. 1 goalie. A pair of players from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, Anthony Stolarz and Alex Lyon, could compete to be his backup. The problem is one, two or all three of the

aforementioned goalies may not be on the roster this fall — or even beyond the first official day of summer. There is a lot of smoke brewing around the possibility of the Flyers not protecting Neuvirth and Las Vegas Golden Knights selecting him in the expansion draft in June. Golden Knights General Manager George McPhee was in the same position with the Capitals when they selected Neuvirth in the second round in 2006. Since teams are required to expose at least one goalie, many experts have speculated Hextall and McPhee might have an arrangement already in place for the Flyers to leave Neuvirth unprotected so the Golden Knights can take him. “I really believe [Neuvirth] is going to come back focused,â€? Hextall said shortly after the season ended. “He was really good for us [in 20152016]. This past year, he

was kind of reflective of our team: inconsistent. Stolarz played well in a seven-game stint with the Flyers, but coach Dave Hakstol is not ready to anoint him the backup. “From the small sample size and everything I saw, [he] was headed in the right direction, Hakstol said. “Whether he’s ready to be a fulltime NHL goaltender, I

Aries Compromise will be your best route to success. Getting involved in something you enjoy or feel passionate about will give you the oomph you need to push for excellence.

Libra Take action and put energy, muscle and creativity into fulfilling your dreams. Personal and physical gains are within reach. Love and romance will improve your life.

Taurus Step up and make things happen. Use any opportunity you get to show off your skills and take on more responsibilities. Send out resumes or go for an interview.

Scorpio Put more effort into your surroundings. If you aren’t happy with where or how you are living, it’s up to you to make the changes necessary to ease stress.

Gemini Flesh out your ideas and move forward quickly. Your innovative approach to life will lead to popularity and the chance to take on a new challenge.

Sagittarius Traveling, forming partnerships and gathering as much information as possible will lead to good fortune. Your ability to see the big picture will give you an edge.

Cancer Someone will use charm to manipulate you if you aren’t careful. Don’t agree to anything before you have a chance to check out what’s entailed. Play it safe.

Capricorn Use your intelligence to gauge how much effort you should put into something that shows few benefits. Follow your intuition and live within your means.

Leo Work on your presentation skills, put your best foot forward and offer what you know will be well-received. Going against the grain will backfire and set you back.

Aquarius Emotions will surface and are best channeled into something that will lead to self-improvement or a positive change to a meaningful relationship.

Virgo An emotional situation will arise with someone you work with or are close to. Do your best to honor your promises without being taken advantage of.

Pisces Do whatever it takes to make physical and personal improvements without being too vocal about what you are trying to achieve. EUGENIA LAST
