Welcome to our first ever Everything Guide! With the help of our advertising partners and you, our readers through voting in our Family Favorites program, we’ve compiled the best resources and tools in one handy issue, one that you’ll want to keep all year. But just because this guide is packed with resources for every season, don’t think we forgot it’s July. As we do for every season, we’ve rounded up more guides than you can count on our website (and we’re always adding more!). These guides outline the best splash pads and pools in the metro (www. metrofamilymagazine.com/swim), more than 40 science experiments you can try at home (www.metrofamilymagazine.com/science) and that’s just the start. There’s no shortage of local fun and we make it easy to find exactly the activity or event
to please the whole family no matter the time of year or your stage of life. Find the seasonal guides that are the best “jumping off” places for all things family fun at www. metrofamilymagazine.com/Seasonal-Fun-inOKC or discover easy access to the latest on our website by downloading the MetroFamily app (www.metrofamilymagazine.com/app). In addition to family fun resources, you’ll also find dozens of other important local child and family resources with this guide. You can find a new school or preschool, a counselor for ADHD children or adults, a party venue or entertainer for your next celebration and so much more. Enjoy “everything” and let us know what you think! Sarah Taylor Publisher

OKLAHOMA
Festivals
Oklahoma’s location in the center of the country makes it a hub for international influence and that’s never more evident than at an Oklahoma festival. Cultural celebrations are hosted in every corner of the state year-round. Agriculture also heavily influences the festival schedule with small towns offering annual celebrations of their season’s harvests. Learn something new and indulge in Oklahoma’s bounty at one or all of these Oklahoma festivals. BY HANNAH SCHMITT, PHOTOS PROVIDED
AZALEA FESTIVAL Held throughout the month of April with special city-wide festivities such as a parade and barbecue cookoff, the Azalea Festival in Muskogee celebrates the blooming of azaleas, tulips, dogwoods and wisteria.

‘89ER CELEBRATION FESTIVAL OF THE CHILD Yukon’s Festival of the Child is celebrated each spring, usually in May, with more than 50 activities especially for kids 12 and under. Kids enjoy unique activities like kayaking, pony rides, painting and storytelling.
Each April, Oklahomans flock to Guthrie for the annual ‘89er Celebration. The event celebrates the state’s birthday with a chuck wagon feed, carnival, parade and a baseball game that takes players and spectators back to 1889.

ITALIAN FESTIVAL PEACH FESTIVAL At the height of peach season every year (usually mid-July), the towns of Stratford and Porter each put on impressive peach festivals. The celebrations are similar with arts and crafts, live music, familyfriendly games and full menus of peachy foods, but Oklahoma natives are usually opinionated about which festival is better. Try both and decide for yourself!
Each May for almost 50 years, the town of McAlester has invited visitors to experience the Italian culture of many of the immigrants who settled in the area during the coal mining era. Family-friendly activities are offered at the Italian Festival, but the big draw is the authentic Italian food served by vendors.

RUSH SPRINGS WATERMELON FESTIVAL More than 20,000 people gather each year in Rush Springs to celebrate summer’s favorite fruit (and collectively eat 50,000 pounds of it!) the second Saturday of August. The Rush Springs Watermelon Festival has been hosted continuously since 1948 with old-fashioned fun like watermelon seed-spitting contests, a beauty pageant and parade.

8. CZECH FESTIVAL
SEPTEMBERFEST Each September, the Oklahoma History Center and Governor Mary Fallin open the museum and Governor’s Mansion for a celebration of Oklahoma heritage called Septemberfest. Kids enjoy clowns, chuck wagon cooking, local musicians and performers, pony rides, square dancing and tours of the mansion. Be sure to stick around for a special story time with Gov. Fallin.
Get a taste of Czech culture the first Saturday of October when the town of Yukon comes alive for the annual Czech Festival. Featuring one of the largest parades in the state, the event also showcases dancing demonstrations, carnival rides, a petting zoo and plenty of Czech food.

10. POTEAU BALLOON FEST Toward the end of October, head to Poteau and look up to see dozens of hot air balloons decorating the sky at the annual Poteau Balloon Fest. Traditional festival activities accompany unique offerings like a hot air balloon glow, ATV races, mud pit races and monster truck rides.
TERRITORIAL CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION Each year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Guthrie residents go back in time to give visitors a taste of a Victorian-era holiday. The Territorial Christmas Celebration kicks off with a festive parade and features candlelit trolley rides and storefronts and carolers decked out in early 1900s garb. Don’t miss the snacks and hot wassail from oldfashioned street vendors and the Journey to Bethlehem with live animals.

Breathtaking hiking trails make for a great day trip, but overnight visitors have the luxury of choosing to pitch their own tent, stay in the park’s impressive lodge with modern amenities or rent a teepee for an authentic Oklahoma experience.
It’s one of the most unique pieces of land in Oklahoma but many people don’t even realize Little Sahara State Park exists. The Waynoka park, located about two and a half hours northwest of the metro, boasts almost 2,000 acres of towering sand dunes that transport visitors to a desert oasis.
Fancy new theaters get all the attention but there’s something special about sharing the nostalgia of a drive-in theater with your kids. Oklahoma City’s Winchester Drive-In shows double features (many of them kid-friendly) and has an impressive snack bar.

Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most unique destinations in the sate and the only place in the world where hourglass-shaped selenite crystals can be found. Visitors flock to the area every year from April to October when digging for these unique crystals is allowed. For a truly unique wildlife viewing opportunity, head to Pawhuska’s Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. Pet Pages Dogs and other pets bring love, devotion, a sense of responsibility and much more to family life. Sponsored by K9 University, this series will bring you stories about how pets benefit families and how you can better care for and live with your furry friends.
Summer is Prime Time for Pet Adoption The Edmond Animal Shelter reported in early June they’re over their dog capacity by more than 300 percent and the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter reported being at capacity this month, as well. Full shelters often give families even more incentive to adopt a pet by giving discounts on adoption fees or even waiving them altogether. If you’ve been considering a pet for your family, summer can be a great time to take the plunge. Kids out for the summer have the spare time to get into the habit of the walking, feeding and daily maintenance of a pet. “Pets are all about unconditional love and there are a great deal of benefits from that companionship,” explained Dr. Lisa Marotta, a clinical psychologist from Edmond. “Most consider a pet a family member, a living being that will listen, love and not steal their stuff.” But there are also more than just those benefits to having a pet, Marotta added.
MEGALODON Largest Shark that Ever Lived
May 26 – Jan. 6
“Pets can help develop social skills, including nonverbal communication,” she said. “A pet’s whole way of communication is nonverbal and kids learn how to understand and respond to their nonverbal cues. For example, if a child is too loud, the animal will likely move away. Also, when pets are taken care of they respond in a positive way. Kids can learn empathy by thinking about another living being and their needs and it’s a way for a child to contribute to the family or community in a tangible and important way.” Julie Bank, superintendent of Oklahoma City Animal Welfare, agreed that having a family pet offers many benefits.

“Animals have an integral role in the family,” Bank explained. “A pet can bring families together with a common focus and goal and give a child someone to connect to, get them out of the house, can build confidence and add lots of new love.” However, as someone who sees what happens when pet ownership doesn’t work out as expected, Bank also noted having a pet alone does not teach responsibility.
“You can’t really expect a child to be fully responsible for a living thing,” Bank cautioned. “Parents will have to help.” And that is often where parents might have some trepidation. Adopting a family pet is a serious commitment. Some research, conversation and practice can help your family decide if and when it’s the right time. While puppies are likely the first thing to pop into a child’s mind, that may not be the best option for a family. Luckily, local shelters have plenty of options. Here are seven tips for choosing a dog at a shelter or through a rescue organization, provided by Angel Soriano, owner and animal behaviorist, of K9 University in Oklahoma City: • Consider the energy of the dog versus how much time you have on a daily basis to exercise them. • Consider the size of the dog versus how much space you have for them. Larger dogs and those with more energy need a larger space. • Consider the amount of grooming this particular dog will need daily, weekly, monthly. Do you have the time and resources for this? • Look for a dog that displays friendliness to you and your family and is not fearful of you or others. You want a confident dog. • To know better whether a dog will be good with your children, bring your entire family to the adoption center. Observe how the dog you are interested in react to children. If you have other pets, ask to introduce this new dog to them. Look for friendly behavior; no growling, snarling, biting or assaulting behaviors are acceptable. • Once you adopt your dog, consider a good trainer as soon as you get your new arrival. A good obedience foundation as well as socialization will be needed. • Also find a good veterinarian and get the dog checked out as soon as possible. A good resource to find one is at www.okvma.org.

[Editor’s Note: Since this new Everything Guide could be very helpful to newcomers in our city, we asked our Kid Reviewers, Samuel and Isaac, to help kid newcomers get oriented. Here’s what they had to say.] What makes Oklahoma City stand out? Sam: When I talk with other kids my age, I feel like I’ve seen a lot of different things. We go to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Philharmonic, lots of shows at Civic Center Music Hall and active sports places like Climb Up, where you can do rock climbing but inside a silo, and RIVERSPORT, which has paddleboarding, kayaking and water slides. I don’t know if I would be able to visit all of those things in other cities because they’re less expensive here and traffic isn’t so bad to get to them. I feel like Oklahoma City has the best parts of a big city and a small town. Kids that are new in my grade who move from other places seem surprised that there is a lot to do here. It can be really fire if you know where to go. Isaac: Oklahoma City stands out because it’s my city. Kids like me live here and we always make friends. I would be friends with any new kids that move here. What is the best part about living in Oklahoma City? Sam: The variety of things to do is important. I also really like the public library here because you can get almost any book brought to you from another library if it’s not at your branch.” Isaac: Eating at different restaurants is really fun. We get to do that sometimes. The other thing you can do here is find lots of rocks
CLIMB UP
and go outside to see nature. My Kindergarten class went to Camp DaKaNi for our field trip and our class played there all day. I climbed a rock wall and we had a picnic with my grandma. I also love seeing the dinosaurs at the museum that has sharks and fossils [the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History in Norman]. What is the worst part about living here? Sam: The weather is always really hot or really cold. My Dad is from Costa Rica and the climate is totally different. It’s very nice, about 70 degrees Fahrenheit every time we visit. The seasons are not like that here because we always have four instead of two; there, it’s either the rainy season or not the rainy season, that’s all. I also wish that we had an ocean with a beach for surfing and that we could walk more places instead of always having to take a car. Isaac: I don’t have my other grandparents here. They live very far away and can only visit once per year and they have to take two airplanes to get to Oklahoma. Would other kids like living in Oklahoma? Sam: Yes, I think they will like that we mostly don’t have traffic jams and you can get out and do things easier than other places. Also, every house has a washer and dryer; it’s not like an apartment in bigger cities where you have to go to a laundry area everyone shares. And if your parents buy a house that’s kind of big and you don’t have a lot of siblings, you might get your own room. That’s a plus you won’t find in every city.

FACT:
It takes four weeks to go from egg, larva, pupa to adult. STAFFORD AIR & SPACE MUSEUM, WEATHERFORD
What do you think you’ll remember most about growing up in Oklahoma City? Sam: I’ll remember wide open spaces and the Wheeler Ferris Wheel. I think other people would say Thunder basketball or OU football. Me, though, what I will remember is friends and my brothers. My friend, John, took me to The Beacon DriveIn, which is in Guthrie, last weekend, and I had never been to a drive-in movie theater before. That’s kind of an old-fashioned thing but it was new to me. Other kids will remember what they do here that’s new to them. Isaac: Well, my teachers are people I will remember. I can barely remember the house we had before where we live now but I don’t want to forget the people, like Mrs. Smelser, my kindergarten teacher. Teachers and friends are more important than the place. If a kid is new here, he or she might miss their teachers and their friends but the good news is you can find more people who are nice.
ISAAC AND HIS TEACHER, MRS SMELSER
your family has dinner. The setting is really peaceful. It’s like the countryside with farms all around out there. Myriad Botanical Gardens is a really chill place where you can meditate in the middle of the city and forget about all the concrete around you. The Stafford Air and Space Museum is probably the most amazing place I’ve ever visited; even though it’s like an hour in the car to get there, you’ll see planes and rockets. If you don’t like how things are going, you can always get a library card and take out books about other places, just travel there in your mind until real life gets better. Isaac: If you’re nice to other people, they will be nice to you. I learned at my preschool that’s the Golden Rule. It’s the rule here. If you just remember that, you can make friends quickly who will be kind to you at recess so you’re not lonely. Also? Go see the dinosaur museum.
