otherhood doesn’t just teach you to be selfless, it at times forces you to be selfless. For example, even though my to-do list is a mile long, I’m laying on the floor next to my son’s train table. See, he asked me to lay here so he could run a toy car down a ramp and off the side of the table and have it land on my face and continue “off road” down the back of my head. I said no. But then he said “please” in his precious little toddler voice so here I am. This is one tiny example of how countless moms give of themselves and make themselves uncomfortable for their kids.

Moms The case for practicing self-care this holiday season BY HANNAH SCHMITT

The term “self-care” seems to be getting more and more popular among moms, but a true definition for it is as elusive as the time many mothers feel they have to practice it. The New York Times humorously defines self-care as “The practice of taking action to ‘preserve or improve one’s own health,’ according to Oxford Dictionaries. Self-care is for anyone who wants it. It can be as easy— and as free— as taking a walk, or as complex as learning a trade. Self-care can include, but is not limited to: saying no; buying things; refusing to buy things; taking a long walk; helping others; exercising; crafting; stockpiling and organizing things like coins and arranging them meticulously into Ziploc bags; stretching; listening to disco; spending time alone; singing karaoke (sometimes, alone); intending to one day start meditating.” Thai-An Truong, a local therapist and mother, said a great way to take care of yourself is to stop trying to stay on top of the parenting game. That’s especially true at the holidays. “There’s no competition and you will burn out continuing to try to stay on top,” she said. “Let go of external comparison with other moms. Look inward on your inner joy and sense of connection with the kids to gauge parenting health.” She suggested moms who feel spread thin should give themselves grace, stop chasing perfection and simplify their lives a little. Mindful moments with no distractions or technology can be very restorative, she said, even if that means saying “no” to some extracurriculars or other activities. In some cases, it may be necessary to even see a therapist to discuss how to take care of yourself, she said.

If you’re not quite to the point of needing a therapist but you know you need to take better care of yourself in order to pour into others, practicing some simple routines and rituals can help. Angela Hodgkinson is a local mom of two and the co-owner of Solare, a Plaza District shop focused on natural beauty. She’s learned first-hand that although women are often taught to take care of everyone but themselves, spending a little time focused on herself goes a long way. “I think mothers have a really hard time in general taking care of themselves,” she said. “I’m learning myself that I have to take care of myself to have something to give to work, to my family and my other relationships.” Being in the beauty industry, Hodgkinson has realized the connection between looking good on the outside and feeling good on the inside, so she has a handful of simple beauty routines she recommends for moms who are short on time. With 4-year-old Nico and 1-year-old Cy getting ready with her every morning, she makes time to do just a few beauty rituals that help her feel cared for, including using a body brush and oil on her skin and a copper tongue scraper. Women are often conditioned not to tell others exactly what they want or need, but adding beauty or self-care items to your Christmas list or even buying them for yourself is a great first step toward self-care this season. Frontier City’s Inaugural Holiday in the Park Though Jan. 6

Frontier City’s western town has transformed into a winter wonderland with more than one million lights, cheery culinary items including s’mores roasted over real fire pits, festive shows and Santa, Mrs. Claus and other roaming characters straight from the North Pole. Many of the park’s rides, including the coasters, Kiddieland rides and more, have been all decked out for the holidays. Festivities are included with regular admission or with a season pass.

Edmond Electric’s Luminance Through Dec. 31

Luminance is a new walk-thru holiday light display, open to the public at Mitch Park during the month of December. Families can stroll through 20 interactive 3D LED displays including a 25-foot walk-thru light tunnel and lighted trees and pavilions. Make it a full evening of fun with a spin around the Edmond Outdoor Ice Rink or hop aboard The Christmas Express.

The annual family favorite is changing things up a little this year. Instead of the typical three-week schedule, Devon’s Saturdays with Santa will be hosted on the first two Saturdays in December. Organizers have extended the event’s hours. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., families can enjoy all their favorite activities including crafts, train rides and more. featured in our 2018 “where are they now” series, and what this outgoing basketball and dance star lacks in years, he makes up for in big personality and big heart. Charming, spunky and adventurous, Tripp lives in Edmond with mom Lori and dad Kenneth. The family shares what Tripp has been up to since we saw him last:

What do you remember about Tripp being on the cover of the magazine? Lori: Sarah Taylor [publisher] is our neighbor. Tripp has been in glasses since he was 13 months, and for the educational series Sarah thought he would be so cute on the cover. We got him that little vest, and the photographer was phenomenal at getting him to smile.

How did you know Tripp needed glasses? Lori: He had an eye that would shake. The doctor told us he would grow out of it at 9 to 10 months but that when he got mobile we needed to come back to have his vision tested. It’s crazy how early they can tell. When they told us he would need [glasses], I worried, but he’s always just rocked them. He had plastic ones in the picture, but now he wears little Ray-Bans.

What’s your favorite subject in school? Tripp: I like math. I like the Wii Center but it’s not open very much! Also Home Center where you play grocery store. I like computers, too.

What has been the best part about going to a new school? Tripp: I like all the [high school sports] trophies and the library. Lori: When we toured, he was mostly concerned if they had a mascot!

What are your favorite activities? Tripp: I play basketball, and I like music and art and dancing. Lori: He’s a great hip hop dancer; he took a class last year.

What do you like to do for fun? Tripp: Thunder games! Lori: We travel a lot. We like to go see new places. We love Colorado, and we just went to Iceland. Tripp is very intrigued by other countries and flags, and he loved the Iceland map in the apartment we rented. Tripp: I was excited about the blue lagoon and waterfalls.

Do you know what you want to do when you grow up? Tripp: I’m torn between being a WWE wrestler or NBA player. Also I want to be a train conductor.

What has been the best change you’ve seen in the metro since Tripp was on the cover? Lori: There has been so much growth in our city, especially new businesses and new family-friendly weekend activities like H & 8th and Heard on Hurd.

What’s your family’s place to visit or thing to do in OKC? Lori: We like to run in 5K races or onemilers with Tripp.

What do you like to do as a family when you’re at home? Tripp: Cuddle and watch TV Lori: We are big “American Idol” watchers.

What makes you most proud of Tripp? Lori: He is so sweet, caring and he’s hilarious. He’s got the biggest personality. He’s so smart and loves to learn. This column is a look back at MetroFamily’s former cover models in celebration of our 20th anniversary this year.

The gallery aims to “get the kids all fired up about reading and the power of fictional worlds.” • Outdoor Adventure: Find outdoor fun at Chicago’s first and only outdoor climbing park and Chicago’s newest downtown green space, Maggie Daley Park, is certainly worth a visit. The three-acre Play Garden, a first of its kind in Chicago, was designed to look like “Alice in Wonderland” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Another great stop for outdoor fun is the 150-foot Ferris wheel at Navy Pier.

Nashville 2 hour flight

Southwest Airlines began offering non-stop seasonal Sunday flights to Nashville in October, and this music city is a delight for the senses. Flights start at around $154.

• Museums: The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Grand Ole Opry are no-brainers because of the city’s rich music heritage. But kids also love the Adventure Science Center. The center includes exhibits geared to engage children ages 3 to 11, but teens and adults will enjoy the nearly 200 hands-on exhibits. • Outdoor Adventures: Nashville is an outdoor playground with The Nashville Zoo, The Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Museum of Art, the pick-your-own working Gentry’s Farm and the 385-acre Nashville Shores Lakeside Resort’s Nashville Shores Waterpark and Treetop Adventure Park. All would make excellent outdoor adventures.

The Hopkins Family Robyn and Courtney Hopkins live by the mantra “be the change,” both in their journey as foster parents and as they blaze a trail for gay couples in Oklahoma. Motivated by their faith and a memorable sermon on the topic, Robyn and Courtney aspire to let their actions, rather than words, do the talking. “Sometimes we have to be silent and show we’re just like any other family,” Robyn said. They are the first gay couple to work with their foster and adoption agency of choice, Lilyfield, which they chose because of its alignment with their Christian values. Lilyfield’s current board of directors doesn’t allow gay couples to adopt through its private adoption services, though the Hopkins could

potentially adopt through the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. In May 2018, Gov. Mary Fallin signed a bill allowing private adoption agencies to opt not to place children in homes that would violate the agency’s written religious or moral convocations or policies. While the law does not ban same-sex adoption or foster care, critics argue it allows private agencies to discriminate against LGBTQ couples. The Hopkins, moms to two young sons and also the first gay family at their children’s Christian school, remain hopeful as they see their everyday actions and faith changing others’ minds about what they thought they believed. “If we speak too loud or say too much it can be used against us,” Courtney said. “Whatever is supposed to be, will be. We hope we can change someone’s view, or change someone.” While varied opinions about their family are a reality the Hopkins live with, they don’t let it squelch their desire to provide a loving

home for children who need one. Robyn, an attorney, vividly remembers her firsthand look at foster care while working at the district attorney’s office, next door to DHS. At the time, shelters were still an option for foster children, but only for ages 5 and older. Robyn remembers younger children waiting for placement, needing to feel safe in someone’s arms. “When they’d have babies, we’d all be holding them all day, taking them to court with us,” said Robyn. “I held a little girl and knew I wanted to foster and be a mom someday.” Though the couple has always known they wanted to foster, they had been waiting for the right time. Before making the decision to foster, they each had a son with the help of an anonymous sperm donor. “I thought let’s wait until our kids are older and understand that these kids might need more attention,” said Courtney. “But then we also thought ‘we’re not getting any younger!’”

Everyday challenges The Hopkins family accepted their first foster placement in March of this year, two weeks after their certification was complete. After fostering a set of brothers for three weeks, they now have three foster children, plus their two sons, all age 3 and under. The exhausting physical demands of parenting are an everyday challenge. Robyn and Courtney worry about balancing attention between all their children, ensuring their boys are getting as much attention as they were before the family fostered. They worry about the emotional and developmental toll neglect takes on foster children.

their professions that some parents just can’t meet their children’s needs, oftentimes because of the cyclical nature of poverty, lack of resources or because they were in foster care themselves, without positive role models to teach them how to parent. Courtney’s reaction is bittersweet when her foster children refer to her as “Mama.”

at such a rewarding age, but I always think about their parents, that they are missing all of this.” The Hopkins believe bridging with biological families and being active in the court process are imperative. While helping their foster children work through their trauma and feel safe and loved are their top priorities, they also hope to have opportunities to become mentors and resources for biological families.

“I just think, does that hurt their Mom’s heart?” wonders Courtney. “We have them

While many assume most children in the foster care system were removed from their homes because of abuse, more often than not, neglect is the culprit. In Oklahoma during fiscal year 2017, the Department of Human Service’s Child Welfare Services reports neglect accounted for 87.61 percent of the 30,698 substantiated abuse and neglect cases in the state. The same report lists various categories of neglect, including exposure to domestic violence, failure to protect, inadequate shelter, lack of supervision, failure to provide adequate nutrition and failure to obtain medical attention. In their foster parent training through Lilyfield, the Hopkins learned how trauma affects a child’s brain. As a nurse, Courtney was familiar with the ramifications, but seeing the effects of trauma displayed in their own home in such young children has been eye-opening. “When a child is deprived of food at a young age, their body is wired to horde and gorge food,” said Courtney. In their experience as foster parents, the Hopkins have witnessed neglect manifest in developmental delays, eating habits, like drinking an entire cupful of water in one gulp or eating until throwing up, fear of being left alone in the car and awe at the couples’ tears when it was time to say goodbye. Their foster children have come to their home with nothing of their own, or just an extra set of pajamas. These everyday heartbreaks are assuaged slightly by watching their foster children grow and flourish. “It’s amazing how fast they can learn,” Robyn said. “They are now meeting milestones, and they are going to be very smart.” Though it’s hard for Robyn and Courtney to understand the neglect that prompted their foster children coming to their home, they have realized in their training and through

Their journey has allowed them to hone in on the children and situations they are best suited for, and their greatest advice for potential foster parents is to know themselves and not to be afraid to voice those specifications.

“You have to know your limits as far as ages [to foster] and what you can handle as far as their history,” said Courtney. For the Hopkins, that means they have realized their oldest son should remain the oldest child in the home. They’ve declined a few calls for placement because they know where their gifts and limitations lie. As the Hopkins family hopes to inspire change, they are changing, too, learning to let others in. Both very independent from a young age, Robyn going to college at 16 and Courtney on her own since 18, the two realized they needed a support system to be a successful foster family. When it was just Robyn and Courtney, or even just them and their two sons, they didn’t feel a need to ask others for help. But they have realized the beauty in reaching out. “People want in out of the kindness of their hearts,” said Robyn, recalling their recent trip to Disneyworld as a shining example. “I had a conference at Disney and I didn’t think we could go. Who would we leave our foster kids with for three days?” Friends from church, also a foster family, eagerly stepped in, adding the Hopkins’ foster children to their two foster kids and biological daughter so the Hopkins could experience the once-in-a-lifetime trip with their sons. Another church member mobilized volunteers to provide meals for the foster family providing respite care. “It does take a village, and you have to be willing to utilize it,” said Robyn.

In his more than 40 years as an Oklahoma City veterinarian, Dr. Bob Marshall has witnessed the pet market explode, with Americans projected to spend more than $72 billion on their furry friends this year, according to the American Pet Products Association. The plethora of pet products can be overwhelming, so Dr. Marshall and local retailers share tips to ensure your pets enjoy a healthy, happy holiday. Just like people, pets tend to overindulge in holiday treats, with their people generally the culprits. Moderation is key, and pet parents should evaluate both calories and ingredients. Dr. Marshall’s research led him to Charlie Bear brand, approved by his 2-year-old Golden Retriever, Pistol Pete, which only have two calories each, compared to upwards of 100 in an average MilkBone. Fresh fruits and vegetables safe for dogs, like carrots, green beans, cucumbers and sweet potatoes, make a tasty alternative to processed treats. Cats, on the other hand, are carnivores and require specific amino acids in their diet, so look for food and treats specially formulated for them. “Know your dog’s chew habits and buy toys or treats accordingly,” said Dr. Marshall. “There is no chew toy that’s indestructible, so never leave your dog alone with a chew toy.” Pete, for example, doesn’t get rope or cloth toys, and Dr. Marshall looks for toys labeled for vigorous chewers. His favorite chew toys is the classic Kong, which Pete prefers filled with natural peanut butter, and chewing antlers, though pet owners should seek those sourced sustainably. Pete’s antlers get tossed when he’s whittled them down small enough that he could swallow them. Dr. Marshall advises against rawhide bones with knotted ends because he’s seen dogs swallow them whole and warns against rawhide manufactured in China, known to cause health problems. BEYOND at Factory Obscura Kid Reviewer: Isaac Roldán, age 6 What made the experience stand out? This kind of art isn’t like a museum at all. It’s almost like a house, a place you can walk through and touch everything. Nothing is normal there so you’ll be surprised at everything there is to see and find. You’re allowed to touch the furniture and what’s on the walls. There are four doors and something crazy is behind each one, like four separate worlds that are very strange. What was the best part? I liked being able to climb into all the different areas to see art that’s not like just looking behind glass or in a case where you cannot touch it. This way of seeing art takes up your whole body because you walk around and see amazing colors, touch it all, open drawers on dressers and just keep being surprised. You have to go up some stairs, climb a ladder, go behind all the doors and find what you want to see. The best part is that you never know what to expect, kind of like in a dream except every room is different with lots of colors and there’s even a big cake hanging upside-down from the ceiling and cookies that come out of a toilet and a giant llama and dried flowers in the walls. Plants and nature are my favorite things so that area was the best one to me. What was the worst part? I kept getting confused about which doors we had already gone through. And it was kind of dark. I wasn’t scared but it reminded me of the movie “Coraline.” Will other kids like visiting this art exhibition? Yes, because you don’t have to be the same kind of quiet as at a museum. Also, it’s good for kids to see that art can be weird and not be wrong. I also felt a lot of peace in different areas and being up high looking down in the dark made me feel sleepy. Other kids will also be happy to see art that doesn’t take all day. You can go back home quickly but with all these images in your mind. It’s kind of like visiting another planet, then you go back to Earth and your regular house, but you

can’t forget what you saw. If an alien came out, it would be surprising but also normal for in there. Would this experience be enjoyed by your siblings? Why or why not? Yes, my oldest brother, Sam, is 11 and he liked seeing all the different areas. He’s old so he takes more time doing things and he helped me read some of the letters hidden in the dressers and other words that were around. My younger brother, Gabriel, is 3 and he liked seeing all the shiny lights and being able to move through the different areas. If you could do this again, knowing what you know now, what would you do differently? I would watch “Coraline” again before going to see the art because it reminded me so much of that. I would also wear something weird to help celebrate the feeling in there, which is very strange. Does anything you learned match up with what you’re doing in school or have done before? Yes, we visited a different art exhibit made by these same artists last year and it was strange but this was stranger. I loved both but this one was my favorite. It’s like the one we saw last year but there’s more to see. I can’t believe that place used to just be full of tires. There are no tires in there now and it’s nothing like a tire shop because the art took over. What do you think you’ll remember most about visiting? All the weirdness is art and the colors are so bright in the dark, kind of like a maze of strange things followed by more strange things. I think everyone should visit so they can take in what’s different from their regular life at school and at home. When you lay down to go to sleep, you’re going to see what’s behind the doors on your eyelids. BEYOND is Factory Obscura’s latest temporary art exhibition hosted at 1522 S. Robinson through Dec. 21.
