ll is NOT calm in my household as we enter the holiday season, and I’d venture to guess the same may be true in yours. I usually begin the countdown to Christmas filled with childlike wonder but end it wrung out, looking much like my youngest, Weston, in this interaction with Santa. As the parents responsible for buying the gifts, decorating the house and inspiring holiday magic in the hearts of our kids, how can we truly embrace the joy in this season?

A few months ago, our church’s Children’s Ministries taught lessons on contentment. My daughter and her friends considered what it means to live a content life and learned how to be more grateful for what they already have. This experience got me thinking — contentment is not something we are born with, but rather a skill we (kids and adults alike) have to hone. Find tips and advice for inspiring contentment in our families, from local moms, during the holidays and all year long, on page 12. In that spirit, I’ll be carefully choosing holiday events that are most meaningful to my family rather than trying to do it all. I’ll simplify gift buying by focusing on memorymaking experiences rather than more stuff (and I’ll be using our Experiences as Gifts Guide on page 14 for inspiration). As a family, we'll focus on making the holidays of others in our community a little brighter by seeking opportunities to serve together.

PURCHASE LOCALLY MADE DOG TREATS AND SOAPS TO SUPPORT WINGS. PHOTOS BY LUCY MILLER.
Earlier this year we brought you the story of 10 Norman middle school students working with mentors through Loveworks Leadership to create a line of augmented reality wristband toys. Since, these talented tweens presented their prototype at the New York International Toy Fair, raised more than $20,000 to fund product creation and officially released Wristworld in local stores and online in October.
Wings wows with handmade gifts Wings enhances the lives of metro adults with developmental disabilities by providing job training and post-high school educational opportunities. The nonprofit’s 59 members, spanning ages from 19 to 62, participate in classes ranging from volunteer service to health and wellness to enhance skills and engage in the community.
The wristbands create holographic game experiences when scanned with the Wristworld mobile app. Designed for ages 6 through 14, the safe-content-for-kids game allows users to explore lands, solve puzzles and defeat enemies. Working with Trifecta Communications, the middle schoolers were responsible for the coding, designing, engineering and marketing behind the products.
As part of culinary and art production classes, Wings members create unique gift items like hand rolled, cut and glazed Oklahoma ornaments, artistic greeting cards and homemade dog treats and soap. The nonprofit accepts donations for the products, each tagged with a suggested amount ranging from $5 to $45. Proceeds benefit Wings and its members, allowing them to continue their personal growth journeys and support many other nonprofit organizations throughout the state. Wings members assemble hygiene kits for the homeless, bake muffins for foster families, make baby blankets for low income families and donate their homemade dog treats to area animal shelters.
At $7.99 per bracelet or $24.99 for the full set of four, this low-cost gift is sure to make a big impact on the high-tech tweens and teens in your life. www.wrist.world

Cut-Paper Portraits Create a colorful picture of you! Vocabulary and concepts: • Portrait • Self-portrait • Color • Shape • Pattern Supplies: • Construction paper • Drawing paper • Cardstock (optional) • Patterned paper (optional) • Black marker • Pencil • Glue stick • Scissors • Mirror
1. Look in the mirror. Sketch your selfportrait using the pencil and drawing paper. Look for details: what color are your eyes? What style is your hair today? 2. Your sketch will be like a map for creating the final product. Label your sketch with the colors and details for each section of your portrait, for example, “brown for hair, green for shirt.” Select the construction paper and patterned paper you’ll need to create your selfportrait based on your descriptions.
3. Cut the shapes of your head, hair, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, neck and clothes out of construction paper, cardstock or patterned paper. Remember to include accessories like your glasses, hat or earrings. 4. Now it’s time to put the puzzle together! Choose a background paper and glue down your cut-paper shapes to create a colorful picture of you! Use the black marker to add details and outlines.
Adults: This project gives you a chance to discuss with your kids all the things that make them unique and special. Encourage your kids to think of their best internal qualities, and point out what you most appreciate about them. Younger kids will need help with cutting and gluing, while older kids can focus on details and making portraits realistic. Selfportraits make great holiday gifts for grandparents or relatives! Discuss together: What are your favorite features about yourself? What makes you feel confident or beautiful? How can you represent your character, like kindness, bravery or persistence, through your self-portrait? Editor’s Note: This project is the final in a three-month series by this dynamic duo, featuring process-based, open-ended art projects that can be modified for all age groups. Projects include simple, straightforward instructions, use easily available and affordable materials and encourage kids to move, create, explore and play. Heather White is an art teacher, museum educator and inclusion specialist. Katherine Hickey is a children’s librarian.
Adapt the projects in whatever way works best for your family, then share your family’s art on social media with our hashtag #okcfamilyart. We’ll share as many as we can via our social channels. We can’t wait to see the art you create together!

LOCAL FAMILY FUN
EDMOND FAMILY TO COMPETE ON ABC’S THE GREAT CHRISTMAS LIGHT FIGHT BY ERIN PAGE. PHOTOS PROVIDED.
Edmond’s Miranda family combines 80,000 crazy bright lights in a rainbow of colors, multiple giant screens, funky singing Christmas trees and quite possibly the most original compilation of songs in a holiday show. Thanks to the suggestions of the family’s three kids, last year’s show included Pentatonix Christmas classics, along with favorites from The Greatest Showman and Snoop Dog’s rendition of Winter Wonderland/Here Comes Santa Claus. The display is so delightfully over the top that ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight came calling last year. Filming took place during the 2018 holiday season in preparation for the family’s appearance on the show this month, only the second Oklahoma group in the show’s history, the first being Downs Family Christmas Lights in Norman in 2013. The Mirandas wow with elaborate displays, intricate choreography and extravagant designs, but the reason they spend countless hours working on the display each year is spelled out in giant lighted letters in front of their home. “It brings a lot of joy,” said Mark Miranda.
THE MIRANDA FAMILY WITH CARTER OOSTERHOUSE, HOST OF THE GREAT CHRISTMAS LIGHT FIGHT.
HOW ALL BEGAN HOWITIT ALL BEGAN In 2014, Mark Miranda marveled at a towering lighted Christmas tree in Edmond. He told his wife, Liz, he’d like to recreate something like it for their yard. “Through the year he started researching, and the project went from a static tree to a tree with synchronized lights to lights on the house,” laughs Liz Miranda. When Mark, an IT professional, discovered he could create a program to control the lights and add music, he was hooked. Liz, whose father had passed away earlier that year, jumped in to help with song selection and synchronization, incorporating songs her dad loved. The Mirandas call their first attempt at a synchronized Christmas lights display in 2015 “not amazing.” “We did all this work but we’d look outside and there were no cars enjoying it,” recalls Mark. So the Mirandas stepped it up a notch, adding more strands, building arches for the display and ditching traditional lights in favor of LEDs in 2017. That was also the year both word of mouth and news media about the display exploded, bringing a steady stream of traffic that’s continued to grow over the seasons. The Mirandas build and assemble the lights themselves, working countless hours throughout the year. They begin hanging lights the day after Halloween, with kids
Mia, 13, Logan, 10, and Kylie, 8, helping set up and providing input on songs, images and sequencing to keep the show modern and kid friendly. “We listen to Christmas music more than most families!” said Liz, who starts selecting songs in August. “We try to go for upbeat, uplifting and funny songs.” The family works feverishly throughout November, with their goal being to open the day after Thanksgiving. The Mirandas could never have anticipated how an unexpected request would throw quite a kink in their 2018 season preparations.
THE GREAT LIGHT FIGHT After a very busy 2017 season, the Mirandas got a Facebook message from a producer for the ABC show The Great Christmas Light Fight asking them to apply. The show, in its seventh season, features the most spectacular Christmas displays in America. In each episode, four families compete for a $50,000 prize and the coveted Light Fight trophy. Having watched the past dazzling, dramatic displays, the Mirandas didn’t feel ready. But subsequent requests and a Skype interview with producers turned into an official ask last August to be on the show. Filming would take place during the 2018 holiday season and the show would air in 2019. “There was a mixture of fear and excitement,” said Liz. “We had a family meeting to talk to the kids and make sure they were on board. They were excited and we were stressed out!”

With only a few months to get a festive show of primetime TV magnitude in order, the Mirandas started brainstorming, putting together new sequencing and asking family, friends and neighbors to help set up. The Great Christmas Light Fight filming was on Nov. 20, 2018, which meant not only did the show have to be up and running earlier than usual, but it also had to go off without a hitch. It wasn’t until about 30 minutes before filming that the show worked in its entirety. “Things weren’t working and we had a lot of technical difficulties with the big screens,” recalls Mark. “We pulled it off at the very last minute, when crowds were already starting to form [to watch filming].”
GIVING BACK The days of Mark looking out the window to see a street devoid of cars are long over. In fact, the Mirandas now need signage and cones to direct traffic. The Mirandas’ kids can often been seen going from car to car
to pass out candy canes and thank viewers for coming. “We get so much positive feedback,” said Mark. “People write us letters or send messages to say they are having a hard time but [our show] made Christmas better.” To give back to the community that’s been so supportive of them, the Mirandas began taking donations for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma last year, a charity they serve as a family. “Anytime we stress out or wonder why we are doing this, we think about how [the light display] brings a lot of joy,” said Mark. “And collecting donations for the Food Bank just brings even more good out of it.” Editor’s note: The Great Christmas Light Fight will run on ABC this month. At the time of publication, the specific date on which the Miranda Family Lights will be featured had not been released. Please visit www.metrofamilymagazine.com/mirandafamily-lights for updates!

Teaching kids contentment BY ERIN PAGE. PHOTOS PROVIDED.
As the holidays draw near, the obsession with wish lists, parties and MORE everything seems to take over my household. And it’s not just my kids who often need to take a breath, it’s me, too, who requires a reset. We asked several local moms how they inspire contentment in their kids and families, not just during the holiday season, but all year long. ALI MEYER AND FAMILY. PHOTO BY CHOATE HOUSE.
Acknowledge emotions Get grateful The first step in finding contentment is often acknowledging feelings of jealousy, anger or frustration. Erin Engelke, mom of three and director of Oklahoma City nonprofit Calm Waters, which provides grief support for families, witnesses daily the value in validating children’s emotions, whether over a significant loss or simply wanting something a friend has. “Our job as parents is to acknowledge what they are feeling, even if it doesn’t make sense to us,” said Engelke. “Otherwise, they think they are wrong for feeling that way and the next time don’t feel safe to share how they feel.”
KAY AND REX ROBINSON
“We do bedtime gratitude where we take turns sharing things we are grateful for that day.”
Reminding kids while they can’t control what happens to them, they can control how they respond helps them harness their power to choose positivity, even in hard circumstances. News personalty Ali Meyer practiced positivity when she was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2018. Meyer found comfort in sharing her feelings with viewers, and her four girls.
Oklahoma City entrepreneur Shelley Leveridge practices nightly gratitude with her 5-year-old daughter. “We take turns sharing things we are grateful for that day,” said Leveridge. Kourtney Aller, director of Children’s Ministries at Church of the Servant, suggests asking kids what they would buy if they had unlimited funds, and then discussing what the family has that already meets their needs, or helping kids make gift tags to label everything they already have to be thankful for. “Instead of focusing on what they don’t have, this helps them to be grateful for what they do have,” said Aller, a mom of two. An attitude of gratitude helps children realize “stuff” doesn’t last forever and instead focus on their relationships and how they can make others’ lives better. “They realize it will make them happy to make others happy,” said Aller.
“There are things to be grateful for even in what seems a dark and dismal diagnosis,” said Meyer, who had a mastectomy followed by several reconstructive procedures. “This is treatable and curable and I’m focused on that and not what I’m losing.”

Quit comparison
Serve others
Director of student and community engagement at the University of Central Oklahoma Kay Robinson believes social media is entirely responsible for the comparison game played out among kids and adults alike.
“When we’re so consumed with what we don’t have it’s hard to see how we can meet the needs of others around us,” said Aller.
“We had comparison growing up, but it was more in the moment, then you went home and forgot about it,” said Robinson. “Now it’s in kids’ faces all the time, and I find myself getting caught up in it sometimes, too.” Meyer talks to her girls about reality verses perception on social media, and she constantly reminds them of how she sees them. “We tell them ‘you are a masterpiece and a wonder and marvel walking the earth,’” said Meyer. When Engelke’s kids feel they don’t measure up, she asks them to think through how to change the way they feel, their own wisdom and creativity giving them strength to solve the problem themselves. She encourages them to compliment others instead of focusing on feelings of envy. “Point out ways kids can be happy for their friends instead,” echoes Aller. “Then they can let it go so jealousy doesn’t consume them.” Engelke recently asked her oldest daughter to list all the things she’s good at to combat feelings of discontent. “She came up with a list of 50 things and I think surprised herself,” said Engelke. “She realized she’s way more amazing than she gives herself credit for.”
On the contrary, serving others gets kids focused outward. As a child, Leslie Illston, development and alumni relations officer at the University of Oklahoma, made blankets with her family for nursing home residents each Christmas. “We asked for people who didn’t have family visiting them and we’d give them a blanket and ask to hear their stories,” said Illston, who plans to continue the tradition with her daughter. Robinson requires students in her freshman success class to complete three hours of community service and write a paper about their experience, many coming away more thankful for their own blessings. Robinson believes the most impactful lesson in serving others for her 5-year-old son is through their work as a foster family.
“We had comparison growing up, but it was more in the moment, then you went home and forgot about it. Now it’s in kids’ faces all the time, and I find myself getting caught up in it sometimes, too.” Kay Robinson
“I want to show him that even being a single mom on one income we have enough to give,” said Robinson. “It doesn’t matter if you are rich or living paycheck to paycheck, you can still find a way to help others.” Editor’s note: Visit metrofamilymagazine. com/teaching-contentment for a list of books and resources for parents and for families to read together.

EXPLORING BEYOND OKLAHOMA WITH CHILDREN
PHOTOS BY VERA HOGENSON PHOTOGRAPHY
Family fun in the sun: Panama City Beach As the idea of giving experiences in lieu of holiday gifts gains traction across the country, consider gifting your kids a vacation this year. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, spring break fling or summer soiree, spending the holiday budget, entirely or partially, on a trip can alleviate the addition of more stuff (hallelujah!) and give the whole family something to look forward to after the magic of the holidays passes. BY ERIN PAGE
16 METROFAMILYMAGAZINE.COM / DECEMBER 2019
For our family of five, nothing says vacation like the sugar white beaches and turquoise waters of Florida’s Emerald Coast. We try to visit annually, fitting our travel plans around whatever budget we can afford that year. We’ve traveled by plane and car, stayed in condos and beach houses, visited on our own and with other family members. December is prime time to book summertime beach fun in Florida, making this an ideal time to wrap up reservation confirmations and package as a holiday gift. Making plans in December also feels especially appropriate since my kids start yearning for the sunshine as dreary January turns to frigid February. They ask at least once a week how many more days it will be until we can hit the beach (my pained answer: a lot). With so many choices of popular beach towns, it’s hard to know where to start your search. I’ve stayed everywhere from Gulf Shores, Alabama to Clearwater, Destin and Pensacola, Florida, and while every beach town has perks, the friendly, eclectic town of Panama City Beach has my family’s heart.

Why Panama City Beach The truth is, those white sandy beaches and blue water are just as beautiful wherever you go along 30A, the highway meandering along Florida’s coast. The key is finding a beach community that’s not so jam-packed with visitors, high rises and tourist traps that you can relax and enjoy the beauty. Panama City offers plenty of activities, culinary delights and family fun without feeling overly commercialized, all at a variety of price points. According to Visit Panama City Beach, PCB is home to more than 27 miles of those sugary white beaches, boasts more than 320 days of sunshine per year and has one of the highest concentrations of bottlenose dolphins in the world. Those dolphin sightings are one of our favorite parts about this beach town. Though we can usually catch sight of a few as we build sand castles on the beach, the best way to see them in their natural habitat is through a dolphin
cruise. The Sea Screamer (850-2353000, seascreamer.net) offers a beautiful and educational sunset cruise, where we have been fortunate to see a host of playful dolphins jumping over and surfing in the boat’s wake. Deckhands pull up a crab trap to teach guests about the area’s eco-life, allowing kids to touch or hold sea creatures. While the Sea Screamer has about 40 passengers onboard, a more intimate cruise or snorkeling option is Florida Dolphin & Snorkel Tours (850-8668815, dolphinandsnorkeltours.com), offering two to three hour experiences in boats holding up to six passengers. Tours typically include seeing dolphins, sometimes getting in the water nearby to observe them, a visit to Shell Island, a nature preserve and bird sanctuary, and snorkeling if desired. Local captains have great respect for wildlife and enjoy passing on history and appreciation for their home to guests.

ICE RINK BIRTHDAYS
NOVEMBER 8, 2019 - FEBRUARY 2, 2020
Celebrate winter birthdays at Devon Ice Rink. Throw the skate party of the season while supporting Myriad Botanical Gardens.
Cost is $175 and includes 10 skate rentals for 1.5 hours and more. For reservations, please contact our Rental Department at (405) 200-1547 or rentals@myriadgardens.org. Myriad Gardens members receive a 10% discount on reservation cost.
Though rain can be frequent in summer months, it usually doesn’t last long and there are plenty of indoor activities when the beach isn’t an option. Our favorite rainy day destination is Gulf World Marine Park (850-234-5271, gulfworldmarinepark. com), a small but educational home to dolphins, sea lions, seals, sea turtles, sharks, penguins, tropical birds and fish. Daily shows throughout the park’s indoor and outdoor exhibits (which are covered and enjoyable even in poor weather) teach guests about the ocean’s fragile ecosystem, the species who call the park home and how to protect and preserve marine life. Don’t miss the sea lion and rough toothed dolphin show — Gulf World is the only North American facility to house rough toothed dolphins. Not far from Gulf World is Pier Park (www. visitpanamacitybeach.com/pier-park), which includes an IMAX theater and laser tag, as well as a variety of restaurants and shopping. Camp Helen State Park (850-233-5059, www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/ camp-helen-state-park) offers hiking, fishing, kayak rentals, picnicking and wildlife viewing, as well as a small indoor visitors center with a few exhibits and children’s activities. St. Andrews State Park (850-708-6100, www.floridastateparks. org/parks-and-trails/st-andrews-state-park) allows cyclists, offers boat tours to Shell Island and has snorkeling equipment for rent. Panama City Beach has nearly a hundred public beach access points, some with public parking. But the best way to enjoy the beach in Panama City is to secure accommodations
on it, primarily condos for rent, but hotel and motel options are available, too. Beachfront Splash Resort (1-800-3-SPLASH, splashresort.com) offers an onsite indoor/ outdoor waterpark overlooking the ocean, as well as a dive-in theater, arcade, mini bowling alley and splash pad. Full-size kitchens and washers and dryers clinched the deal for our family’s stay. Though with less amenities than a resort or hotel, smaller condos or beach house rentals on the water will typically mean less competition for your own patch of sand. If your rental has a kitchen stop by Buddy’s Seafood Market (850-234-2609, www. buddysseafoodmarket.com) in town for fresh-caught shrimp, which they’ll steam for you, grouper or snapper and smoked tuna dip. For fine dining, Firefly (850-2493359, fireflypcb.com) offers tasty farmand gulf-to-table options from lobster to artisan pizza. Its location in a strip center is deceiving, but once inside, the elegant décor, including a huge tree covered in white twinkle lights, makes you feel you’ve been transported to another world. For much more casual fare, visit Finn’s Island Grub (multiple locations, www.finnsgrub.com) for made-to-order tacos (get the fish) enjoyed outdoors at family-style picnic tables. Voted best cafe and bakery on Panama City Beach, Andy’s Flour Power (850-230-0014, andysflourpower.com) serves mouthwatering breakfast and brunch options from French toast and Belgian waffles to shrimp and grits and a surf and turf omelette. popularity can mean a wait and a noisy meal. Grab a pastry to enjoy later (or in the car — no judgment!) on your way out. If you’re seeking a quieter, more secluded spot, there are options just outside Panama City Beach. Our family’s favorite is quaint Carillon Beach (carillon-beach.com), a gated community with beach homes of varying sizes for rent, complete with three pools, a playground and small downtown area. The beach is easy walking distance no matter your location within the neighborhood, perfect for little ones (or their parents) who need a nap in the heat of the day. The beach is never crowded, kayaks and paddle boards are available to rent for the adventurous and comfy lounge chairs are set up and taken down for you each day. For families with older kids, bustling Rosemary Beach (866-348-8952, rosemarybeach.com) provides more shopping, restaurants and activities, still within easy walking and biking distance of the beach and condos. The Havana Beach Rooftop Lounge (www.thepearlrb.com/dining/rooftop-loungeen.html) offers stunning views of the sunset, and nearby La Crema Tapas & Chocolate
(850-534-3004, www.lacrematapas.com) is a favorite casual family or date night choice with mouth-watering Spanish-inspired offerings like seafood paella, enfuego chicken or chili pork tacos.
neighborhoods/inlet-beach) is home to our family’s favorite culinary attraction, the Donut Hole (850-213-3127), a bakery and diner with donut specialties like red velvet, key lime-filled and chocolate peanut butter. While you wait, or to work off your breakfast, enjoy yard games or the breezy outdoor patio. Whole key lime pies available to go are worth all the hype. Near the Santa Rosa and Seaside communities is Watercolor Resort (www. watercolorresort.com), an active, familyfriendly neighborhood with accommodations ranging from rental homes to an inn, all with access to outdoor activities, parks, shopping and restaurants. Whether you choose to gift your family with a beach vacation or just put this locale on your bucket list for future travels, quality time at Panama City Beach is sure to create memories that last forever.

THE CHILDREN’S GARDEN AT THE MYRIAD BOTANICAL GARDENS
BY HEATHER WHITE. PHOTOS PROVIDED.
When my son was a baby, one of my favorite places to visit was Martin Park Nature Center. I loved being surrounded by trees, the sounds of the park, the water and wildlife. The wide, easy-tonavigate trails were the perfect place to walk with a stroller and enjoy a natural setting.
A few years later I met Jack McMahan, now a friend and colleague, who was instrumental in making Martin Park Nature Center more accessible. Jack uses a wheelchair and saw a need for trails following the principles of universal design, which create spaces people of all abilities can enjoy. A national movement to make experiences and destinations accessible and inclusive
for all has come to Oklahoma City, too. Numerous metro organizations are committed to removing barriers to participation for people and families with varied needs, making their programs and spaces available to all. These organizations are making great strides in serving the entire Oklahoma City community through engaging destinations for families with typical or special needs.
Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma Lyric Theatre has been an Oklahoma City staple for more than 50 years with a drive to enrich the quality of life for all Oklahomans, including making productions available for families and those with special needs. Lyric’s Theatre for Young Audiences initiative highlights a production specifically catered toward children each spring with sensory-friendly performances. Specially designed for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder or other sensory-processing disorders and special needs, lighting and sound cues are more muted to ensure patrons enjoy the experience. Each production at Lyric includes an American Sign Language-interpreted performance, and assistive hearing devices are available. www.lyrictheatreokc.com
Scissortail Park The new 70-acre park in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City was designed with inclusion in mind, aptly described by its tagline “For Everyone.” ADA accessibility can be found through the park, including the pathways, water fountains and exercise stations, and directional signage throughout includes braille. The unique children’s playground includes several pieces created for children of all abilities to enjoy, from a gravity disk to sand diggers and sand pits. Interactive fountains for play during warmer months are on grade-level with plenty of space to move around among the jets. Another popular water feature, the 3.7acre lake, can be enjoyed by paddle boats, including one that is ADA accessible. www.scissortailpark.org
44 METROFAMILYMAGAZINE.COM / DECEMBER 2019
Science Museum Oklahoma A longstanding Oklahoma City institution, Science Museum Oklahoma welcomes guests of all ages and abilities to ignite curiosity and experience the wonder of science. Recognizing the need to make visits comfortable for families or
individuals with special needs, the museum has introduced sensory kits for visitors at no charge. The kits include earmuffs, a timer, gloves, sunglasses, fidget toys and printed copies of the museum’s sensory story and sensory-focused map.
Factory Obscura Factory Obscura recently opened its first permanent exhibit, Mix-Tape, with the principles of universal design incorporated into the creative process, encouraging designers to think in new ways to ensure equitable participation. Light, sound, textures and interactivity are all part of the experience for visitors. Offering accessible parking and meeting ADA compliance were also key in the exhibit design. www.factoryobscura.com
New to the museum’s programming, sensory-sensitive family nights offer afterhours programming for those wishing to explore the museum in a quieter setting while still getting to participate in handson science. www.sciencemuseumok.org
OKC Museum of Art OKCMOA has created a “culture of welcome” to help visitors of all abilities feel safe, supported and valued, making programs and public spaces accessible and inclusive by removing barriers that impede participation. In addition to sighted guides and largeprint labels for guests with low vision or who are blind and wheelchairs available for those with mobility challenges, the museum offers families with special needs opportunities to fully engage in the facility and collections. A quiet space is available for those who need a break or calm space. In addition to discovery packs for kids, which include activities, books and sketching materials, the museum recently introduced sensory booster packs. Wiggle seats, noise-canceling headphones, fidgets and social narratives (visual stories describing socially appropriate responses and behaviors to help those with ASD gain social skills) are provided to give sensory-sensitive guests tools to enhance participation. www.okcmoa.com
Oklahoma City Zoo In June 2018, the Oklahoma City Zoo became certified by KultureCity as a sensory-inclusive zoo, the second certified attraction in Oklahoma to be recognized as a sensory-inclusive venue. Zoo guests have access to complimentary sensory bags, including fidget toys and noise-canceling headphones, and weighted lap blankets. Signage and maps indicate quiet and headphone zones for those feeling overwhelmed. Through a partnership with Dean McGee Eye Institute, free binoculars are available to enhance guests’ experiences. The first Friday of June each year marks Dreamnight, an event hosted by the zoo for children with special healthcare needs to enjoy a cost-free night with their families. www.okczoo.org

Myriad Botanical Gardens Last year, the Myriad Botanical Gardens installed accessible play equipment in the Children’s Garden, allowing children of all abilities to know the joy of play and experience the outdoor space. The Myriad Gardens is the only public space in Oklahoma with an AbilityWhirl, making merry-go-round play accessible to all kids. A We-saw™, a new take on the traditional seesaw with a gentle rocking motion, invites individuals of all ages and abilities to take a ride. The Arch Swing offers accessible, calming swinging for up to five children at a time. In preparation for the holidays, the Myriad will host a sensory-friendly Santa event for children with special needs on Sunday, Dec. 15. www.oklahomacitybotanicalgardens.com
Oklahoma City Ballet Through community engagement programs and accessible performances, the Oklahoma City Ballet strives to bring the art form to individuals of all abilities. An adaptive dance program called Chance to Dance welcomes children ages 8 to 12 with varying levels of capabilities to experience the joy of dancing. OKC Ballet performances are held at the Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall, an ADA compliant building with seating options for those who need accessible seating. Every effort is made to accommodate special requests to enhance inclusivity and accessibility. www.okcballet.org
Oklahoma Contemporary With its new location opening March 2020, Oklahoma Contemporary will remain committed to making the arts available to everyone. The studios, galleries and community spaces are designed to be accessible to families with different abilities and learning styles. Through the organization’s veterans initiative, staff gained experience creating adaptive spaces for people of varying abilities and mobility and have incorporated the lessons learned into the new space. Using universal design principles, the new facility will feature an early childhood studio so young visitors and their caregivers can learn and create in an inclusive space. Kids and families of all abilities are welcome to all experiences and programs to make open-ended art and connect with peers. www.oklahomacontemporary.org

Community Crusader Sergio’s story BY ERIN PAGE. PHOTOS BY LAUREN SMITH.
Sergio Hernandez is a modern day superhero. No, he doesn’t leap tall buildings in a single bound. But he may be more powerful than a locomotive considering the countless lives he’s impacted in his 17 years. As far as being faster than a speeding bullet, the track and cross country star may get there yet. In celebration of fellow superhero Batman’s 80th anniversary in September, Hernandez received the Batman Award from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in recognition of his determination, bravery and leadership serving Boys & Girls Clubs of Oklahoma County and his community. Even without a Batsuit or Batmobile, Hernandez has championed leading at-risk youth, learning trauma-informed care and serving the homeless. A top level scholar at Classen School of Advanced Studies, Hernandez credits his mentors at Boys & Girls Club with inspiring him to make a difference.

The makings of a role model Hernandez started attending the after-school program at Boys & Girls Club at age 6. Hernandez, his mom and siblings lived in a small apartment in a dangerous neighborhood, and his mom, who worked late hours, needed a safe place for him to play and study. The Hernandez family battled occasional financial struggles and a language barrier as his mom’s English was limited. Hernandez said the club became a safe haven where he has flourished. “Even when my mom got another job and could pick me up after school, I asked her to let me continue to go,” said Hernandez. “All of the workers have made a big impact on my life, I got friends my own age to hang out with and it opened up a whole other world for me.” During the teacher walk out in 2018, when the club’s sites were providing childcare for parents while kids were out of school, Hernandez became a junior staff member at the Santa Fe South club to help with the influx of students.

“I was really focused on making connections with the kids,” said Hernandez, “hanging out and playing a lot of basketball.” Immediately becoming a positive role model for the youth, Hernandez took on a bigger role at the Cesar Chavez site and then later helped open two new club sites, Capitol Hill Middle School and Adelaide Elementary School. “It’s really ignited my passion for working with kids,” said Hernandez, who plans to study child psychiatry after graduation. “It makes me feel like I’m following in the footsteps of the people who have impacted my journey.” Hernandez keeps artwork made by his elementary students in his room and car to remind himself of the importance of helping kids feel good about themselves. He’s awestruck when he considers how his positive presence is changing the very trajectory of these students’ lives. “I think about it a lot,” said Hernandez. “A lot of these kids are low income or have parents who are immigrants who are constantly working. So they would otherwise just be at home or wandering the streets without anything to do.”
With the older kids, Hernandez teaches conflict resolution, offers a non-judgmental listening ear and models the possibilities for their success through his own life.
Championing community causes Hernandez’ rigorous academic training at Classen includes international business courses. He also runs track and cross country, with his favorite distances being two miles and 5k. He is president of the Keystone Leadership Club, a community-service based Boys & Girls Club initiative, and has helped put on a career fair for metro high school students to broaden their horizons to post-graduation opportunities. “We have the military, universities, trade schools and job opportunities to show students all the career paths available,” said Hernandez. Hernandez was instrumental in building a food pantry over the summer after noticing the homeless population going through
trash cans outside one of the club sites. Community members can both take and leave toiletries and non-perishable food items at the freestanding pantry. “Oklahoma has one of the highest rates for homelessness,” said Hernandez. “A lot of people don’t like to help the homeless because there is this stigma that they are lazy or can’t get a job. But so often it’s just about circumstances.” Hernandez dreams of helping reduce the homeless population in Oklahoma, getting folks who are struggling into stable housing and improved situations. That vision and his desire to become a child psychiatrist were both formulated thanks to his time at Boys and Girls Club. As a staff member Hernandez received beneficial training on how to pinpoint and help kids who’ve undergone trauma. “Working with kids firsthand and seeing their needs pushed me to want to help them,” said Hernandez. Hernadez was shocked to receive the Batman award and is quick to redirect attention to his mentors, who’ve changed his life and become like secondary parents. But those

same mentors have watched Hernandez grow into a hard-working leader who displays grace under pressure, creativity in solving issues and determination to give back. “I want to look at the bigger picture instead of dealing with first-world problems,” said Hernandez.
