8 nearly-free holiday traditions

M

aking holiday memories with your family doesn’t have to be expensive. As the chaos of the holiday season ensues, you can create memories with your family though holiday traditions that bring you closer to the spirit of the holidays. Taking part in meaningful traditions helps your child to understand that the most important things during the holiday season are being together as a family, helping others and spending time on activities that have importance and significance. Fun ideas for free or low-cost family traditions include: 1. Go to a free holiday concert, recital, or other community event. (Find a great list at www. metrofamilymagazine.com/holiday-fun) 2. Take part in a toy, food, or clothing drive and help others in need in your community. 3. Plan a potluck holiday meal where relatives share favorite dishes and desserts, and exchange favorite recipes and the history behind them. 4. Create unique wrapping paper for your gifts and personalize it for each person. 5. Read the same book or watch the same holiday together each year—and don’t forget the popcorn and hot chocolate! 6. Select a new ornament to occupy a special place on the tree. Choose an ornament that reflects the past year, a significant life event or plans for the future. 7. Sing favorite holiday songs. If you have musical family members, ask them to play along. 8. Write a letter to yourself or your children, to be opened in one year, two years or five years later. Be sure to include your wishes, dreams, thoughts and hopes for the coming year(s), as well as your favorite memories from the past year.

Tips for having a (truly!) stress-free holiday season

D

o your holiday preparations feel like a part-time job? If so, Dr. Lisa Marotta, a clinical/ school psychologist in private practice in Edmond, says you are not alone. “Our regular responsibilities don’t decrease,” she explains. “And we have less time to relax and more pressure about finances. Whatever problem areas you were facing before the holidays will still be with you during the holidays.” But the added responsibilities don’t have to zap the joy out of the season. Dr. Marotta offers the following tips to help keep holiday stress at bay:

Simplify meals and keep the order of your evening intact. On weeks where school programs or other events will disrupt, plan and talk about changes in advance so everyone knows what to expect. Be intentional. Whether it is spending time together or giving back to others, set firm expectations for holiday priorities and allocate your time accordingly. Limit commercials. Turn off the television and turn on Christmas music instead. “If children are less exposed to advertising, there is less impulsive, ‘gotta have it” whining,” Dr. Marotta explains.

METROFAMILY MAGAZINE

8

DECEMBER 2013

Abandon old customs. Think about how you spend your time and the traditions you keep. If any aren’t working for your family—or are a source of stress or discontent— chunk them and replace them with new customs that truly bring you joy. Set a peaceful tone. With the extra events and activities taking place during the holidays, it can be easy to get unbalanced. “Be balanced, purposeful and present to your family,” Dr. Marotta advises. “Parents set the tone.Your children will never be more balanced than you are. Center yourself so you can be more peaceful in responding to their needs.” Find more from Dr. Marotta at www. drlisamarotta.blogspot.com.

Real moms of the metro: Meet Jill Brown Delozier

HOW THIS BUSY MOM HELPS ORCHESTRATE SOME OF OUR CITY’S BIGGEST HOLIDAY EVENTS

A

s the PR/Marketing Director for Downtown OKC, Inc., Jill Brown Delozier understands the role that her organization plays in our community. “When downtown does well, the entire city does well,” she explains. BUILDING A BETTER CITY Downtown OKC, Inc., is a non-profit organization with the goal of promoting and improving a vibrant downtown area. “Downtown is a central focus in any community,” Jill says. “In the last 20 years we have been taxing ourselves to make sure downtown is a vibrant center. Much of our sales tax revenue is made in downtown OKC so it needs to be alive, have visitors and have new businesses starting here.” Currently, she has her hands full with their biggest annual project—Downtown in December. Jill is part of a dynamic team that produces an array family-friendly entertainment, including the Chesapeake Snow Tubing, the Deluxe Winter Market, the SandRidge Tree Lighting Festival and more. Downtown OKC also partners in great projects like the Devon Ice Rink and pays for free water taxi rides. “We don’t do stuff just to make money but try to think about what would add value to the city. We look for things that can become a family tradition like the classic family Christmas movies that are free.” As Downtown in December kicks off, Jill is especially looking forward to taking her children every weekend to Devon’s Saturdays with Santa to do crafts and meet Santa. She is also excited that one weekend will even feature live reindeer. BUILDING A STRONGER FAMILY Jill is balancing her busy career with family life and the responsibilities of being an MBA

student. Jill says her strategy for staying afloat can apply to all working mothers, “We do the best we can with whatever is on our plate.” When her workload picks up around the holidays, Jill’s husband Josh shows his support by jumping in and taking on extra household responsibilities. “We have our set roles, but we are very flexible,” Jill says. Josh also has a marketing career downtown. “We get each other’s work,” Jill says. “It’s helpful to have a partner that understands your career and schedule.” Jill lights up when she talks about being with her husband and daughter Emily, but also the quality time she gets to spend with her stepdaughters Rylie, age 7, and Jenna, age 5. Because her stepdaughters spend every other Thursday through Monday with the family, Jill gets to do “life stuff’ with them, not just play with them on weekends. “Being involved in school and homework makes for a real relationship,” Jill notes. Creating boundaries has been essential to Jill’s success. “What is important to me is making quality time with my girls a priority. If you don’t make it a priority, you will just focus on what is happening right now.” Although she is often tied to her email and phone over the weekend, she strives to keep those from interfering with family time. “[In addition to family time,] I definitely understand the importance of alone time and couple time. It’s healthy for everyone,” she giggles. “And I like to get my nails done.” Watching her children interact with the city as they grow up is important to her. “I’m interested in urban dynamics and what makes a really great downtown,” Jill concludes. “It has changed my purpose.”

Here’s more about how this 34-year-old mother of three balances planning holiday fun with family fun What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

close relationships and friendships and still create a little time for myself.

All the dogs I ever had have been rescue dogs. I’m a big believer in helping homeless pets, and we just adopted a puppy named Sofie last month.

What is your parenting style?

What inspires you? I’m inspired by people who follow their dreams, even if that means taking a big risk.

I speak to my children with respect and watch my words. I understand the impact my language, tone and volume can have, so I try very hard to think about whether or not I’d speak the same way to an adult when talking to kids. Advice for other moms?

What are you passionate about?

Don’t be too hard on yourself when you fail to accomplish everything.

Promoting Oklahoma City and helping to create great events and spaces here.

Favorite quote or advice about motherhood?

How has motherhood changed you? I’m a little kinder and gentler with my words than I used to be. Becoming a mother also made me realize how much my mom loved me. Even when they tell you and show you, it’s hard to completely understand unconditional love until you’re in the role yourself. How do you banish stress? Reminding myself how fortunate I am and that any problems I encounter are small in the grand scheme of things. What is on your wish list?

“There are two things we should give our children: One is roots and the other is wings.”

QUICK FACTS ABOUT JILL: •

What are 5 words that describe you? Open-minded, competitive, independent, straightforward, creative.

What’s your favorite date night venue? Red PrimeSteak

What’s your favorite family outing? Enjoying the Myriad Gardens

What’s on your reading list? I’m working on earning an MBA—so these days, pretty much anything for school

What’s always in your handbag? Gum, receipts and about 50 ink pens.

Handmade art, crafts and home décor from local artists! What are you most proud of? Going back to school to work on an MBA. What motivates you?

o you know what happens when you mix sand and fire? You get GLASS! Did you know it can also be art?

comprehensive collections of Chihuly glass. The museum’s collection represents over three decades of Chihuly’s finest work and can give you a first-hand glimpse into why Chihuly is widely renowned as one of the most important artists to work with glass. To get an idea of how glass can be art, take a family trip to the OKCMOA to see the museum’s permanent collection or visit www.chihuly.com to see the variety of glass forms Chihuly has created.

ACTIVITY DIRECTIONS • Gather clear plastic cups of different sizes and different colors of permanent markers, fine point or larger. • Give each member of your family one cup and ask them to color both the inside and outside of the cup in whatever colors and patterns they prefer. • Place each cup on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and place into a pre-heated 350 degree oven. Turn off any convection so the cups do not blow off the cookie sheet. • Bake for 45 seconds to one minute. • Remove the pan and let the cups cool for one minute. • Be sure to curate your family’s creations in a visible space so that your guests can view your art during the holiday season. Experiment with placing smaller cups inside larger cups, placing them upside down or placing a rubber band on the cup before baking. You can also make a small hole on the side of the cup and thread a ribbon through to make a unique holiday ornament. DID YOU KNOW? You can enjoy a free child’s admission (up to age 12) to the OKCMOA with a paid adult admission by using MetroFamily’s exclusive Kids Pass coupon (www. metrofamilymagazine.com/kids-pass). Activity provided by Oklahoma A+ Schools, the state’s only research-based whole school network with a mission of nurturing creativity in every learner. Learn more at www.okaplus.org.

I

have the best picture of my younger daughter’s first Christmas morning. She’s wearing her bluefooted pajamas with snowflakes on them. She has her pacifier hanging halfway out of our mouth and she’s lying in the middle of the living room floor—if you choose to believe it is somewhere beneath all of the gift wrap and gift bags and tissue paper and toys and books and stockings and candy.

METROFAMILY MAGAZINE

Clearly, she’s overwhelmed by the delights and sounds of Christmas morning at our house. But she looks cute rocking those sweet pajamas that I had given her the night before and helped put on her after her Christmas Eve bath. Her sister had matching pajamas, and if she’d not been trying to climb up the chimney to look for more loot, I might have had a picture of her as well on that same Christmas morning.

DECEMBER 2013

Oddly enough, that picture of that sweet little eleven-month old lying on the floor in her holiday PJs might be the last known picture I have of her wearing her Christmas pajamas. Even before becoming a momma, I longed for the day that I would purchase matching—or at least coordinating—pajamas for my children. I had visions of sweet babies in their footed pajamas posed beside the lighted tree early in the morning, sleep still in their eyes, smiling serenely for the camera. Norman Rockwell couldn’t paint a more beautiful picture than I had developed in my mind’s eye. What I didn’t envision was the wide array of Christmas morning pictures I’d get without Christmas pajamas. Each year the pajama selection would be made with great care so that my girls would coordinate with each other and look as though they belong on the pages of “Christmas Morning” magazine—assuming there is a “Christmas Morning” magazine.

The next year, when my younger daughter was almost two years old, she climbed from her crib and arrived in the living room on Christmas morning wearing a princess nightgown, complete with attached bows and ribbons that had grown so raggedy that they looked like fur. When I tucked her in the night before, she was wearing red-footed pajamas with jingle bells on her toes and ruffles on her bottom. Since that time, I’ve given her white pajamas that made her little body look like she was a snowman, purple pajamas with Santa-hat wearing frogs up and down the legs, a red night gown with Christmas tree and snowflakes along the hem, and a pair of footed pajamas with button down rear panel as they wore in days of yore. Each Christmas Eve, I’d tuck in my precious child, kiss her goodnight, say prayers with her and then tell her that Santa would only come to children who stayed in their beds and stayed in their pajamas … their Christmas pajamas

that had been selected with care by their loving mommas who just wanted one—ONE—perfect Christmas morning photo. I think she saw through me because I’ve yet to get a picture of her in her PJs. Since that first Christmas, I’ve taken Christmas morning pictures of this same child wearing a basketball uniform, a bathing suit, her Halloween costume, an apron and nothing but snow boots. My dream of Christmas morning pajamas is long gone. But, I’m at peace with that. Completely at peace with that. Instead, my child has given me the gifts of flexibility and understanding and tolerance. She’s taught me to go with the flow and smile through it all. She’s also given me countless crazy pictures that will come in handy at a future graduation and/or wedding reception slide show. And that’s a tradition that I’m firmly on board with. May your holiday pictures be filled with smiles.

5 reasons to explore Stillwater BY JENNIFER GEARY - METROFAMILY COLUMNIST

I

n the middle of all the holiday hubbub, sometimes it’s nice to just take a day away from it all and make some new memories together as a family. There are plenty of places locally where you can do that, but why not branch out a little and explore some new venues? Stillwater is best known as the home of Oklahoma State University, but this prairie town offers family fun of all kinds and for all ages! Here are five reasons why it makes the perfect day trip for your family this holiday break.

DECEMBER 2013

ESKIMO JOE’S There probably isn’t a restaurant in the state that’s as well known as Eskimo Joe’s (507 W. Elm St., www.eskimojoes.com)— in fact, Eskimo Joe’s shirts are some of the most popular collectibles in the world. Located just a few blocks south of the OSU campus, Eskimo Joe’s is easy to find and has ample parking. Over the years the restaurant has expanded its original building so that your wait for a table won’t be any longer than at other places. The staff is friendly and accommodating and even though Eskimo Joe’s began as a bar, it’s very family friendly today. On Thursday nights from 5:00-9:00pm, kids’ meals are all under $2, so a tasty meal at Eskimo Joe’s can be kind to your wallet Don’t forget to try their famous cheese fries while

you’re there! When you’re finished eating, stroll next door to the Eskimo Joe’s store, where you can get all the gear you need to remember your Stillwater trip. THE HIDEAWAY You’ve probably seen—and even visited-— some of the many Hideaway locations in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas, but the original Hideaway (230 S. Knoblock, www.hideawaypizza.net) opened in Stillwater in 1957. Located immediately south of the OSU campus on Campus Corner, the Hideaway is known for its tasty pizzas, but also offers sandwiches, pastas, and soup and salad combos Come hungry—between the appetizers (be sure to try their famous fried mushrooms!) and the generously-sized pizzas, you’re going to need a big appetite! COURTESY OKLAHOMA WONDERTRIUM

THE OKLAHOMA WONDERTORIUM Located just north of the Stillwater High School campus, the Oklahoma WONDERtorium children’s museum (308 W. Franklin Ln, www. okwondertorium.org) is home to a number of educational and interactive exhibits for kids of all ages.Try your hand at cow milking on the farm and then buy your supplies at the general store, or visit Mt. Fuji and serve up some sushi to your friends and family. You can also visit the medical center, water table, art center, ball area and block center. On the weekends of December 14-15 and December 21-22, children can participate in the Cupcakes with Mrs. Claus event. Mrs. Claus will read a holiday story and then the kids get to decorate their own delicious cupcakes. There is no additional cost for this special event, but you do need to get a special timed ticket. Those tickets do go fast, so plan to arrive early to reserve your spot. On December 31 the WONDERtorium is open from 10:00am1:00 pm so you can celebrate “Noon Year’s Eve” with New Year’s activities such as making noisemakers. At noon, everyone will ring in the new year—perfect timing for those with small children who won’t make it to midnight!

THE SHEERAR MUSEUM Take a step back in time with a visit to the Sheerar Museum (702 S. Duncan St, www. sheerarmuseum.org). Dedicated to preserving the history of Stillwater and Payne County, this museum began 39 years ago as a way to house the amazing button collection of Mrs. Lena Sheerar. It has since grown to include a modest collection of antiques and items of historical significance to the area, all arranged

by themes such as education, home life and the electrification of the area. Your kids may balk at the idea of spending their break at a historical museum, but The Sheerar Museum is small enough that they won’t get bored—and big enough that you can spend a nice hour or so looking around. The museum staff is happy to tell you more about the items if you have any questions.

COURTESY OSU BASKETBALL

OSU BASKETBALL For decades, the OSU Cowboys (www.okstate. com) have dominated their opponents on the basketball court. There are several chances for you to see a game and get in on the heartpounding action of OSU basketball in December. The Cowboys play at Gallagher-Iba Arena, which has been called the “Madison Square Garden of the Plains.” Basketball is a great sport to enjoy with your children because the game is fast-paced and fairly simple for them to follow. And, since the games are inside, there’s no need to worry about the weather interfering with your family fun! Ticket prices vary, so check the Oklahoma State Athletics website for information and pricing. All of your young fans will need a ticket for the men’s games, but if you attend a Cowgirl game, children under two do not need a ticket. Strollers and car seats are not allowed in the arena and bags must be small enough to fit under the seat, so make sure you’re prepared if you’re bringing very little ones with you. The Cowboys have three home games in December (Dec. 6, 17 and 30) and the Cowgirls have two homes games (Dec. 1 and 29), so you’ve got five chances to be a part of a historic and exciting tradition. Stillwater is just an hour north of Oklahoma City, so you can make a full day of it without spending half your time on the road. Just head north on I-35 and take exit 174 for Stillwater. This will put you on OK-51 (also known as West 6th Ave) which will lead you right into town. Stillwater may not be a big town, but it offer so many unique and exciting places for your family to enjoy and make wonderful memories.
