Spiritual M aturity

by: Dr. Larry T. McEwen

Tethered toTechnology For faith to work there has to be a certain level of uncertainty and question, and doubt, and inability to prove something. If there’s a huge boulder in front of me and someone ask me if I have faith it’s there I would simply state: “I don’t need any faith to believe that boulder is there, I see it, I can touch it! With faith, I believe what I cannot see or touch, so in order for faith to exist, there has to be a certain amount of uncertainty. The Scripture says in 2nd Corinthians 5:7 “We live by faith, not by sight.” Now what happens, over time, is we begin to see God working in response to our faith and our faith grows and gets stronger! Why? Because the uncertainties began to erode as we witness the Hand of God moving in our lives. This has happened so much in my life that it’s becoming harder and harder for me to not believe! The doubts grow smaller and have less power over me! There are still times when something catastrophic happens

and I’m momentarily shaken, but even then, by faith, I make a decision to trust God and once again I witness His intervention in the situation and circumstances! And while I am now convinced that my faith has not been misplaced because of all I’ve experienced, I would be in life, most of usif havewhat a strong Idesire to remain was God, was not, quickAstowe mature say that even believed independent as long as humanly possible! Two Horses Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse. But if you get a closer look you will notice something quite interesting... One of the horses is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made him a safe and comfortable barn to live in. This alone is pretty amazing. But if you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell. It is coming from a smaller horse in the field. Attached to the horse’s halter is a small, copper-colored bell. It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow. As you stand and watch these two friends you’ll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse, and that the blind horse will listen for the bell and then slowly walk to where the other horse is, trusting he will not be led astray. When the horse with the bell returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, he will stop occasionally to look back, making sure that the blind friend isn’t too far behind to hear the bell. Like the owners of these two

horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect. Or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need. Sometimes we are the blind horse, being guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives. And at other times we are the guide horse, helping others to find their way.

Festive Fun

for

St. Patrick’s

Day

Turn your St. Patrick’s Day celebration into a chance to enjoy Irish heritage with hearty foods and a lively atmosphere. When it’s the one day each year it’s acceptable to pinch non-conforming friends and family, it’d be a shame not to go all out. These few simple tips can help you put together the perfect party to revel in all things green - and tasty. * Decorate with purpose. Everyone knows that green is the color of the day, but go one step further by incorporating it into different items. Banners and streamers work fine, but setting out green candles or even adorning your light fixtures with green bulbs can help you take an extra step forward. * Create active fun. Instead of limiting your guests to dining and conversation, plan some simple activities to help the fun flow. Games like a “treasure hunt” for gold coins, limerick-writing competitions or even just turning up Irish-themed music can help get the party started. * Eat festively. Turn your party’s food and drinks into true Irish dining with some delicious recipes like this American Irish Stew, which includes beef, onion, carrots and potatoes for a tasty cultural meal to fill all of your hungry guests. 7 Ways to Plan for Cold and Flu Season Declining temperatures can bring fun, cool-weather activities, but they also mean cold and flu season is lurking. While everyone hopes to stay healthy, it can be difficult to completely avoid viruses and bugs. Dr. Deborah Gilboa, a board-certified family physician, and Braun spokesperson offers some simple suggestions to help your family plan for cold and flu season.

Dispose of Expired Medicine

Use a Reliable Thermometer

Manage Humidity Levels

Spend some time checking the medications you already have at home. Review the expiration dates and if any need to be thrown out, research how to properly dispose of them according to local government guidelines.

Reading the temperature of a person who feels ill can help provide confidence and peace of mind. Make sure you have a reliable thermometer that takes accurate temperature readings. "It's important to carefully monitor potential illnesses to make sure children get and stay well, and taking an accurate temperature reading is a necessary part of this process.

Control your home's humidity levels with a humidifier to help prevent the survival of flu viruses on surfaces and in the air.

Stock Up Before cold and flu season, make sure to stockpile must-haves like ginger ale, ice pops and recommended cough suppressants.Thinking ahead means you won't have to rush out when you or a family member comes down with something.

Practice Healthy Habits Encourage the entire family to maintain healthy habits such as regular hand washing, following a nutritious diet, drinking plenty of water, and coughing or sneezing into a tissue to help minimize the spread of cold and flu viruses.

Have Important Information on Hand To save time when your child is ill, keep a reference of your child's allergies, prescribed medications, dosage amounts and current weight handy. Health care providers typically need this information to correctly prescribe and dose most medications. Other items to keep on-hand include school sick day policies, operating manuals for medical devices and a reference of temperature readings that classify a fever.

Keep Contact Information Accessible Keep a list of important phone numbers and addresses inside your medicine cabinet door or on the fridge so they're easily accessible to family members, babysitters, and caretakers. Include your family doctor or local clinic, schools, pharmacists and anyone else you may need to reach in an emergency. If cold or flu reach your household this winter, it's always important to consult a doctor if you have any questions regarding the health of your family members.

Chris Symons Family • Fitness • Umpire Chris Symons, is married to Trisha McNab Symons, an Adapted Physical Education professional with the St. Tammany Parish School System. They have four children and are active in their faith at Community Christian and live right here in Slidell. He’s passionate about fitness, the life lessons that sports instill in our youth and is an umpire at the collegiate level in addition to a full-time career.

Q Tell me about your background and interest in sports?

A As a child, sports were a big part of our family. I grew up with two brothers, which created a very competitive environment. Whether it was baseball, basketball or football, it was always a great time that produced some cherished memories. As I got older, baseball became my passion and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to play in high school and college. Q What

values did athletics teach you and do you use them still today in your professional or personal life?

A From youth leagues to high school and onto college, sports instilled in me that to succeed, you must work as a team. It also taught me to respect and honor those that came before us. Today, those same values my wife and I instill in our children. To succeed, you must respect others, challenge yourself and always improve upon what you did the day before. In life, institutional knowledge matters. Knowing what happened before you arrived is critical to developing the best version of the future. At its core, team sports teach that very principle. Learn from mistakes made in the past and improve on the successes. Q

When and why did fitness become important to you?

A Over the years, fitness has taught me to challenge myself and push beyond boundaries. Physical fitness and good health are a sign of discipline and responsibility. I also recognize that I have more to live for than myself. It’s important that I’m here for the long haul, to see my kids grow, to play a role in their development for as long as possible. Q The umpiring gig is so fascinating and unique. It made me think, I’ve never met a

high-level umpire before. How did you get into that and how did you move up the chain to get to the NCAA level?

A After playing in college, I missed the relationships and team environment that baseball brought. I volunteered as a baseball coach, but always felt there was something missing. At the urging of my wife, I tried umpiring and became hooked on the competitiveness, high pressure situations and responsibilities that the job entails. Over the years, it’s been a tough and sometimes challenging road, but I have stayed determined to achieve my goals and enjoyed the satisfaction of seeing the results of hard work. At the end of my career, what I will value the most will be my mentors, the relationships I’ve built and the lifelong friendships that I have developed.

Estate Planning takes Time & Commitment P roper estate planning takes time and commitment. It is not sufficient to simply write a will or trust and leave the rest to chance. Your attorney should review your assets and specific goals, and implement a plan to ensure the proper management and distribution of your assets upon your incapacity or death. People who try Do-It-Yourself estate planning often neglect aspects of a properly coordinated estate plan. Here are some examples: Your Estate Plan is Important: People often forget to review and update their estate plans after a major life events, such as the birth or death of a family member, or a marriage or divorce. Another major life event is the disability of a beneficiary or legatee. If a child becomes disabled, parents should consider a “Special Needs Trust” for the disabled child so as not to affect the child’s eligibility for means-tested government benefits. Pay Attention to Non-Probate Assets: People make beneficiary designations on their accounts and then forget about them. However, it is important to review and update such

designations. This is especially important for retirement accounts where the beneficiary designation can provide tax advantages to the beneficiaries. Additionally, retirement accounts are sometimes moved to different institutions and the beneficiary designation forms may not be transferred. Digital Assets: As technology advances, more and more business is conducted online. People sometimes fail to address how digital assets are to be handled. You should make a list of your online accounts, including email, financial accounts, frequent flier or rewards points, and any additional sites where business is conducted online. You should include the username and password for each account, as well as access information for digital devices, such as smartphones and computers. Also, your agent under your durable power of attorney and your Executor should have the specific authority to deal with the individual’s digital assets. Minor Children: It is important for parents with minor children to engage in estate planning. A trust for their minor children is of-

ten necessary to provide financial management for children too young to manage assets on their own. Parents sometimes fail to consider at what age their children may actually be mature enough to handle their inheritance. A minor’s inheritance should be held in trust for his or her benefit until an age at which the parents believe the child is more likely able to manage his or her funds. As always, when you are ready to move forward with your estate plan, it’s always best to seek advice from a experienced, qualified estate planning attorney or elder law attorney.

Get Checked or Check Out We love AAA baseball. Geaux Baby Cakes! We use AAA batteries. But do you know about the Silent Killer AAA? Medical abbreviations can hide the seriousness of abdominal aortic aneurysm. You may have one right now, and not know it. More than 200,000 people are diagnosed with abdominal aortic aneurysms each year in the U.S.And many more go undiagnosed because there are no symptoms. Ruptured aneurysms are the 10th leading cause of death in men over age 55.

Are you a smoker or former smoker? Do you have high blood pressure? Hardening of the arteries? Has someone in your family had a AAA? Answering yes means you may have this silent killer. But a simple, painless, noninvasive ultrasound test can “see” an aneurysm-it’s like a balloon slowly growing on the largest blood vessel in your body. Medical and technological advances are available to prevent this from being a death sentence. Surgeons can keep the balloon from bursting. This simple

ultrasound test is also free-on March 29, at the Jefferson Senior Expo.

Should you get screened? Yes. Rodney Dangerfield survived a AAA. So did singer Gordon Lightfoot and U.S. Sen. Robert Dole. Many others did not survive. Albert Einstein, for one. This simple screening takes only a few minutes, and doesn’t require an embarrassing hospital gown. You’ll also get a free blood pressure check, all provided by clinical staff from LSU Healthcare Network with AAAneurysm Outreach. AAAneurysm Outreach is a national nonprofit headquartered in New Orleans founded by a Louisiana woman who lost her father suddenly to an undiagnosed AAA, at a young age. With a passion to prevent this anguish from happening to other families, the mission is to eliminate the silent killer of abdominal aortic aneurysms by providing awareness, education, free screening, and support to those at risk and in greatest need. More than 11,000 people have received these free screenings, and many, many lives have been changed. Plan to attend the Senior Expo on March 29, and spend a few minutes that morning getting screened. It could save your life.

Many people who are physically fit and have no risk factors have also been found to have aneurysms, as with other heart and vascular disorders.

4 Health Benefits Of Dogs 1. Help you lose weight Want to drop a few pounds? Grab Fido and get hoofing. Research has repeatedly found that daily dog walks help you lose weight since they force you to into moderate physical activity for 10, 20, and even 30 minutes at a time. 2. Improve your social life As we age, it becomes harder to get out and meet people. Not so for dog owners. Researchers have found that about 40 percent make friends more easily, possibly because the vast majority speak with other dog owners during walks.

3. Add meaning and purpose As we grow older, especially after we retire, it can be difficult to find structure and meaning day in and day out. Dogs take care of that. 4. Prevent grandkids’ allergies Back in the olden days (the ‘90s), experts believed having a dog in your home contributed to children’s allergies. Fortunately, recent research shows just the opposite is true: Dogs and cats actually lower a child’s chance of becoming allergic to pets—up to 33 percent.

When Dogs Are Not So Great According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), just over 86,000 falls per year are caused by pets ― 88 percent by dogs. Falls can be cataclysmic health events for people who are older, frequently leading to serious injury (broken hips, etc.) and long hospital stays. If you’re looking to adopt, consider mobility issues, and make sure to take steps to reduce the dangers of falls.

Tips for Working

Dog

Man's best workout buddy

Do: Give it a try Just like humans, American pets have a pudge problem: an estimated 52% of dogs are overweight or obese. Walking or running with your dog on a leash is one way to get you both moving more.

Do: Check in with your vet

If you aren't sure whether your dog's fit to run, check with your veterinarian. A vet can let you know if there are any red flags and can provide advice about what's safe and healthy for your individual dog in your individual surroundings.

Your dog may be the ultimate exercise partner. Think about it: dogs are always eager to spend more time with you, they have plenty of excess energy to burn, and temptation to skip a scheduled sweat Do: Start out slow session melts away when your furry friend stands at the front door, A sedentary person can't just jump off the couch one day and run 5 miles, leash in mouth, ready to log a few miles with you.

Do: Give it a try

Before you hit the pavement, though, you’ll need to train your pooch to run with you. Here’s how to make your run enjoyable and rewarding for both you and your best (furry) friend.

Heart Disease

by Vasanth Bethala, MD

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. The term “heart disease” refers to several conditions that can affect your heart, many of which are associated with a process called atherosclerosis. When a substance called plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries, atherosclerosis develops. The arteries are narrowed due to the buildup, making it harder for blood to flow, creating a blood clot, increasing the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Other types of heart disease may involve the valves in the heart, or heart failure due to the heart not pumping well. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking are the three key risk factors for heart disease and almost half of all Americans experience at least one of these risk factors. Having diabetes, not getting enough exercise and eating an unhealthy diet can also increase your risk for having heart disease. Some risk factors cannot be controlled, such as age or family history. Steps can be taken, however, to lower your risk by changing the factors you can control. Ask your doctor about ways to prevent or treat these medical conditions that can lead to heart disease. Symptoms will vary depending on the type of heart disease. Chest discomfort or a heart attack is the first sign for many people. Someone having a heart attack may experience several symptoms, including: • Chest pain or discomfort that last longer than a few minutes. • Shortness of breath. • Pain or discomfort in the arms, shoulder, jaw, neck or back. • Nausea (feeling sick to your stomach). • Feeling light-headed or weak. Several tests can be performed by your doctor to diagnose heart disease, including coronary angiograms, electrocardiograms (EKG or ECG), chest X-rays and exercise stress tests. Ask your doctor about what tests may be right for you. Several steps can be taken to reduce your risk of heart disease and keep yourself heart-healthy: • Don’t smoke.

Lifestyle changes, like the ones just listed, can help lower the risk of complications if you have heart disease. Sometimes, lifestyle changes alone may not be enough, your doctor may prescribe medication to treat the disease. Medical procedures or surgery are also options. The staff at the SMH Heart Center focuses and specializes on the procedural care dedicated to heart patients. Cardiology specialists also offer comprehensive care for heart disease in early detection and medical and surgical treatment, including stent placement and open-heart surgery when needed. Talk to your doctor about having regular medical checkups and the best ways to reduce your risk of heart disease. If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of a heart attack, call 911. For more information on the cardiology services offered through the SMH Heart Center and Ochsner, please visit SlidellMemorial.org.

• Maintain a healthy weight. • Eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. • Prevent or treat other health conditions you may have, especially high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. • Think calmly, rationally and seek help. Do not let minor things stress you out.

Vasanth Bethala, MD Cardiologist 1001 Gause Boulevard Slidell, LA 70458 985.280.2200 www.slidellmemorial.org

• If you find yourself depressed, tell somebody and get help. • Don’t ignore symptoms that may indicate a heart attack.

This month's selections: Mystery/Detective series that we can’t live without

Liz Maddox:

One of my favorite authors died at the end of 2017.Sue Grafton was a prolific writer of detective novels that were alphabetically titled beginning with A Is for Alibi in 1982. I began reading her work in 1982! I was only 22 years old, a new young teacher unmarried with a life full of possibilities when I met Kinsey Millhone a private investigator in Santa Teresa, California and nothing was ever quite the same for me. Kinsey Millhone was to me what Mary Tyler Moore was to a generation of television watchers. She was tough, independent, smart, but always kept her female presence. Even though the series is set in the 1970s, Kinsey was a modern woman with real problems like paying her bills and what to eat for dinner. Although detective novels, these books didn’t have the violence that other series had. The stories were about Kinsey and her crazy eclectic group of friends. It was about how deeply she cared for people and how far she was always willing to go to help. Kinsey Millhone inspired me in so many ways. And so this page is a tribute to the character, but more importantly to the author, Sue Grafton, whose final book Y Is for Yesterday misses completing the alphabet by one. Kinsey will never be transformed into a movie or television series; Sue Grafton was totally opposed to that believing the uniqueness of her character just wouldn’t show well on the screen. There won’t be a ghost writer for Z Is for Zero either. Ms Grafton announced plans for her final book, but her cancer was too much. In preparing to write this page, my Between the Wines ladies and I have had a grand time talking about our favorite mystery or detective series. I knew my number one choice was the Sue Grafton series, but there is nothing like a good murder mystery! A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to read murder mysteries popular around the world. Louise Penny whose novels are set in Canada is another favorite of mine; Cindy is going to tell you about her books. Lisa See has a great series all set in China. And of course there’s Tana French whose books all involve the Dublin Detective Squad. But that’s for a future page. This month, please enjoy the favorite detective/murder mysteries of the ladies of the Between the Wines Book Club. Note that Cathy’s choice isn’t a series yet...but she’s hopeful!

Barbara:

As the cold, bitter weather of the past few months assaulted our area, I spent the time surrounded by the warmth of Périgord in Southern France. Figuratively immersed in Martin Walker’s murder mystery series featuring Bruno, handsome Chief of Police in that fabled area, I read all ten

Pg. 24

LIFESTYLES

books and eagerly await the next, A Taste of Vengeance, coming in June. Medieval towns, tantalizing food (foie gras, truffles), local vineyards, and historic chateaus set the scene for murders related to current issues. For instance, The Templar’s Last Secret ties the death of an archaeologist studying the pre-historic cave art of the area to Islamist extremism. Bon appetit!

Cindy: Come out of the cold this winter and curl up with one of Louise Penny’s mysteries

in her award-winning Chief Inspector Armand’s Gamache series. Take a trip to the charming snowy Canadian town of Three Pines, a mythical place in the heart of Quebec where residents sit in a cozy cafe by the fire eating flaky croissants and talking about the latest town drama. The series is my favorite because the mysteries are not merely plot-driven as are most popular detective stories. The characters in these stories are complex and intriguing with the most popular being Inspector Gamache, whose integrity and conscientiousness play a large part in the reader’s experience of the novel. But, the plots don’t disappoint either as Penny usually weaves about two or three different subplots within one novel. Enjoy with or without a cup of cocoa!

Cathy:

Walden Manor, the setting for Half Broken Things by Scottish writer Morag Joss, made my English teacher’s heart go pitter-patter from the onset, not to mention the metaphoric comparison of the broken contents of the beautiful country home to the brokenness of its three interlopers. The calm and graceful voice of the narrator, 64 year old house sitter Jean, as she relates the ordinary events of the days the loving little family spend together at the manor juxtaposed with the circumstances of their crushing pasts and the disturbing present makes for some masterful suspense. I found myself vacillating between empathy and revulsion as the story unfolds, surely the author’s intention. Be forewarned that this novel is not your typical crime thriller, probably more of a psychological thriller.

Marlene:

The mystery-detective set of novels that I recommend is the Billy Boyle: WWII Series written by James R. Benn. The series chronologically follows events in history from 1942- 1944. So far there are 12 novels with #13 set to release later this year. Billy is an Irish-American cop from Boston, and a distant nephew of Gen. Eisenhower. For this reason, he gets assigned to Ike’s staff. While that seems like a safe posting, danger and intrigue always find Billy. When Billy arrives in England, the people there are trying to survive the Blitz. Billy and his friends, an aristocratic displaced Polish officer and an attractive English girl, are clever and likable. After that first mystery, the reader travels to North Africa then Rome, and later to the coast of France and Switzerland. All the while following the US forces on their way to defeating Hitler. The novels are exciting and engrossing with a nice combination of mystery, history, and romance.

The Five A's of Making Stray-Proof Resolutions By: Ryan C. Lowe

If you’re like most people, the New Year’s resolutions that you made are long gone. You might have thought about losing weight, paying off your debt, reconnecting with friends, or even learning something new. Now, it’s February, and while you did your best for the first two weeks, you found yourself slipping until you were back into your old habits. It’s time to take those resolutions off the shelf and make them better, stronger, and stray-proof. “Successful people are simply those with successful habits.” ~ Brian Tracy When you create resolutions for yourself, you are declaring that you are willing to take on several collections of habits. For instance, the resolution to lose weight is a declaration that you will choose to eat more vegetables, that you will climb the stairs a little more, and that you will ride your bike more often. Resolutions represent the foundation of successful habits.

1

Attuned to You

The first A in resolutions is Attuned. Your resolutions are yours, not anyone else’s. You create the especially for yourself, not your spouse, your family, or your friends. Just the very thought of completing your resolutions should bring a smile to your face. You should feel that extra jolt of energy at the thought of giving yourself something special. When the goal is important to you, you are highly likely to complete it and achieve the prize. “We can change our lives. We can do, have, and be exactly what we wish.” ~ Tony Robbins

2

Attitude Oriented

Your second A is Attitude. The confidence that you have about a project will determine its success or failure. Attitude is a powerful force, one which has changed the course of mighty countries and companies. Your resolutions, when they are centered around your positive attitude, make you unstoppable in their achievement. There’s a saying, ‘when you believe, you achieve.’

Actionable Steps Can be Taken 3 The third A is Actionable. Not only do you have the confidence that you can complete this resolution, but you’ve broken the resolution down into actionable steps.

Pg. 26

LIFESTYLES

Each of these steps should take no more than about fifteen or twenty minutes to complete. This process enables you to wrap your mind around the resolution just that little bit better.

4

Anytime Completion

5

Adventure Oriented

The fourth A is Anytime. Resolutions have no exact start dates. They do not have to be started at a specific time and just slotted into our lives. They can be started at any time. The new year is incredibly convenient for certain resolutions like quitting smoking and changing your diet, but it is not necessary to follow a specific protocol when following resolutions. If you are committed to doing the resolution, then the time that you start doesn’t matter. “Adventure is not outside man; it is within.” ~ George Eliot The fifth and final A is for Adventure. We all have different definitions for the word ‘adventure,’ but there’s a tiny little part of us which wants it in our lives. We’re curious: eager to find the new discoveries, willing to break the records, wanting to turn lead into gold. And, frankly, many of our own resolutions don’t measure up. Completion of your resolution means the start of a new adventure.

GOYA-cises

Here are a few things you can do right now to put these ideas into actions: First, revisit your resolutions. Think about the things which you wish to accomplish this year for yourself. Make sure that these new resolutions are completely yours and doable. Second, turn your resolutions into smaller actionable steps. Keep those resolutions in mind when you’re searching for the next thing to do. Always be searching for a way of reaching your goal. Third, remember that life is an adventure and that your resolutions are guideposts on that quest for adventure. You don’t fail at resolutions, you merely postpone their completion. Shared Housing of New Orleans helps elderly and/ or disabled people stay out of Nursing Homes if they do not need to be there, and remain in their own homes. We do this by matching a homeowner with a homeseeker. The homeowner provides room and board, the homeseeker provides light housekeeping and companionship. There is no money exchanged. Careful screening and assessments are done. Our Registered nurses do assessments and case management, interactions with physicians, nurses, and Home Health staff as needed. A match might be for as little as 6 months, or for many years. Homeseekers are usually people who are concerned that they won’t be able to pay the next month’s rent. Anyone may refer a person. Our supporters include Lois Simpson, former Executive Director of the Advocacy Center for Elderly and Disabled and Ron Marks, Dean of the School of Social Work at Tulane University
