A furry draught excluder? No, this is the cat given leg up to success...
Cutest thing on short legs: The low-slung Napoleon could become the next must-have pet Pictures: AudrA Mitchell TAUNTS about his lack of stature failed to stop Napoleon from cutting a swathe across Europe. And now a moggy named after him could be about to conquer the world on some of the shortest legs in the animal kingdom. The Napoleon breed may bear an uncanny resemblance to a draught excluder. But it has been recognised by the International Cat Association after nearly 20 years of campaigning by breeder Joe Smith. And now that its pedigree is recognised, the compact cat is tipped to challenge lapdogs in the affections
by DOMINIC YEATMAN of celebrity pet-lovers such as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. Kai Rogers – who has brought a breeding pair to his cattery in Llanelli, West Wales – is hoping to be ahead of the trend. ‘It’s a bit comical because when you first see one, you think it’s sat down when it’s not,’ he said. ‘It’s like a meerkat, it will stand up on its hind legs for quite some time.’ The Napoleon – created by USbased Mr Smith by crossing the Persian and Munchkin breeds – is
sold by only a handful of American dealers, with prices starting at $1,200 (€880) for a kitten. Mr Rogers said ‘there’s always a chance’ that such exclusivity will make it the next must-have accessory for the girl who has everything. But Paris Hilton and company should know that the fluffy pets can be more of a handful than your average chihuahua or shih tzu. ‘They’re just as quick and agile as other cats and they can run pretty fast,’ said Mr Rogers. ‘What they lack in height they make up for in ingenuity.’

GOOGLE Transit has arrived in Ireland. No, the tech giant is not taking on Dublin Bus, Luas or Dart with a new public transport system, but rather partnering with them to help commuters plan trips more easily. While Google Maps has replaced many an Irish driver’s SatNav, Irish users have only been able to experience the Google Transit public transport companion while abroad. The National Transport Authority has now provided Google with its Journey Planner data, meaning Google Maps users can plan integrated journeys across the country, with live departure times, suggested routes and estimated journey time on Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, commercial bus operators, Dart and Irish Rail services, Luas and the Dursey Island Cable Car in Cork.
Launching the service yesterday, Transport Minister Alan Kelly said: ‘It’s all about making it easier for commuters and visitors to use public transport.’ Google Maps Transit product manager David Tattersall said the service is available in more than 800 cities globally. Google Maps
Connected: David Tattersall, Anne Graham of the NTA, Minister Alan Kelly, and Google Ireland’s John Herlihy launch of Google Transit services have more than one billion monthly active users, with 50 per cent of global Google Maps usage being mobile, he added. Google Transit can be accessed from maps.google.ie or by downloading the Google Maps app from Google Play or the Apple App store.

‘Only seven stuck to pay rules’ – HSE ONLY seven hospitals and health agencies comply with public sector pay rules, health chiefs have revealed. HSE director general Tony O’Brien said there had been a ‘nod and wink’ culture in the institutions over the breach of earnings. He revealed just seven of 42 agencies complied with pay rules, as others ran up millions in so-called top-ups. The HSE would work to ensure those top-ups were repaid, he added.

Man in knife threat Buyers fail to meet after ‘rude gesture’ Bord Gáis valuation A MAN broke into a home and held a knife to the 65-year-old occupant’s throat because he mistakenly thought someone had ‘given him the finger’ from the window, a court has heard. James McGuire, 27, had been mixing alcohol and prescription medication when he believed he saw someone making a rude gesture to him. He later told gardaí he was in a ‘feud’ with a young man who lived there since he was 11 years old. The court heard Kevin Tormey was confronted in his home by McGuire, of Mobhi Road, Glasnevin, who had three knives and asked where Mr Tormey’s son, Stuart, was. He was punched and kicked by McGuire, who held the knife to his throat. Judge Patricia Ryan adjourned the case until January.
Back in court: Anthony Lyons arrives, with an unidentified woman, at Dublin’s Court of Criminal appeal to face a revised sentence for sexually assaulting a woman after the original prison term was ruled too lenient
THE sale of a Bord Gáis division has been abandoned after no buyer was willing to stump up the asking price. Bord Gáis Energy, the retail, assets and trading division of the state-owned company, was offered to international energy companies and investment groups with the Government pushing for €1.4billion. It was earmarked for sale under the bailout loan programme alongside Coillte harvesting rights, which were also dropped, and a 25 per cent Aer Lingus stake. Pat Rabbitte, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, said none of the final bids for Bord Gáis Energy were at an acceptable level. Among those interested or approached were energy group Viridian, private equity group Blackstone and Malaysian state power firm Tenaga Nasiona.

Sex attacker seeks leniency over ‘abuse’
THE family of a businessman was followed and abused when he was jailed for six months for a violent sex attack, a court has been told. Anthony Lyons is facing a revised sentence for assaulting a woman after the Court of Criminal Appeal (CCA) ruled the original prison term was too lenient. His barrister Patrick Gageby told the three judge court that Lyons’ wife Eileen and their four children had suffered a campaign of harassment over the case. Their ten-year-old son was among those targeted while being brought to and from school by his mother, he said. Mr Gageby said a man who lived near the family, a ‘supportive network’ of taxi drivers, and the media, had targeted the family from the day Lyons was jailed. ‘The publicity in this case was unusual and an unfortunate consequence,’ the barrister added, appealing that the intimidation and media coverage which had a ‘punitive effect’ be taken into account. Lyons was sentenced to six years in July 2012 for sexually assaulting a then 27-year-old woman on October 3, 2010.
by SARAH STAck But Judge Desmond Hogan sparked outrage when he controversially suspended five and a half years of the jail term and ordered him to pay his victim €75,000 in compensation. The CCA previously upheld an appeal by the Director of Public Prosecution against the sentence on grounds the trial judge had been too lenient. The three judges have reserved judgment on the revised sentence. Lyons, a former aviation boss from Griffith Avenue in north Dublin, was convicted by a jury after pleading not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to the sexual assault. He admitted the attack – in which the victim was rugby-tackled to the ground and violently physically and sexually assaulted. Lyons was released from prison almost a year ago. Caroline Biggs, senior counsel for the DPP, said the victim had not yet taken any of the €75,000 compensation.
Property prices up 6% in the last year PROPERTY prices have risen more than six per cent in the last year, with the Central Statistics Office revealing the rise is 15 per cent in Dublin. Dr Peter Stafford, director of Property Industry Ireland, said the rapid price rises in Dublin of 2.3 per cent last month were as a result of a lack of property for sale, rather than an indication of a property bubble. Meanwhile, the online property tax deadline has been put back from yesterday until 5pm on Friday because of the level of calls.

It’s all Greek to ken rogan, as he att empts to understand why we just can’t seem to get enough of Mel Gibson films and bad news stories
‘a

And Aristotle, could you credit? So: why is the news always bad? This question was eloquently, if indirectly, posed in Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity: Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music? After 15 years working in and around the media (mostly around), not only did I not have the answer, but why would you even want one? Either they shovel tragedy at us to make us afraid, which is depressing, or worse, we actually like the misery and they’re just giving us what we want. Which is even more depressing. But an article by a screenwriter (Twitter handle @scriptmag) blew my mind, if you can forgive such earnest carry-on. Turns out you can unpick the bad news knot – you just need to be an ancient Greek with a brain the size of five mutant pumpkins. When not creating the basis for the entirety of human thought, Aristotle set down the rules of drama in a book called The Poetics. I even I tried reading it. Big mistake. Never meet your heroes. soldiers face discharge after drunken row TWO members of the Irish Defence Forces face being discharged from the army for taking part in a violent fight after a ‘night of binge drinking that went wrong’ in a city centre nightclub. Andrew Gilmore, 25, and Michael Kearney, 30, will be sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court tomorrow after Judge Martin Nolan indicated that he is considering a ‘deferred sentence’ provision which would leave the army free to impose a sanction other than dismissing the soldiers. The judge heard Gilmore, of Gormanstown Army Barracks, Co Meath and Kearney, of Carlton Crescent, Strabane, Co Tyrone, had left Madonna’s Nightclub after 3am when a row broke out between them and another two men and a woman.
by DecLan brennan Gilmore punched the first victim Patrick Byrne who was knocked unconscious. He then assaulted the man’s friends, Thomas Roantree and the woman. Another man, who disappeared after gardaí arrived, received blows to the head and body and Mr Roantree was kicked while he was on the ground, Garda Frank Johnson told the court. He said CCTV footage showed Kearney kicking someone on the ground once. All of the victims have since recovered from their injuries. The court was told a prison sentence, a suspended sentence or a fine of more than €800 would result in automatic dismissal from the defence forces.

Chezza’s €1.7m court win C
HeryL Cole has successfully wrestled a reported €1.7million from X Factor USA bosses, we can exclusively reveal. The showbiz recluse won her legal dispute with producers Blue Orbit in an out-of-court settlement after they unceremoniously gave her the chop in 2011 after just three weeks. It marks the end of the last bad reminder hanging over the 30-year-old and show boss Simon Cowell – paving the way for her to return to The X Factor
by AnDREi HARMswORTH
in Britain next year. ‘It was never about Simon. It was about the production company and the contract they signed,’ an insider said. ‘She and Simon are totally cool and have been for some time. ‘This was the final sticking point and means everything has been resolved.’ Former Girls Aloud star Cole locked horns with
show bosses in Los Angeles Superior Court after slapping them with a hefty bill of unpaid fees following the fallout. Having collected her €1.3million fee for her short-lived US adventure, she has now pocketed payment for what would have been her second season, plus wardrobe and styling costs and a €10,000-a-month living allowance. Cole was booted off the Fox TV show amid claims that American audiences struggled to understand her strong Geordie accent.
But friends insisted it was too early to talk about a possible return to The X Factor judge’s chair after 54-year-old Cowell revealed plans to bring his old sparring partner back for the next series. ‘These things are never looked at until the contract is signed in May. ‘There’s always going to be speculation about her going back next summer. Who knows right now if she will return?’ a source teased. Her spokesman refused to comment but confirmed: ‘Cheryl’s dispute with Blue Orbit has been resolved amicably.’
Back to have fun: Cheryl has ended her exile and is eager to get on with her fourth album
Alec Baldwin has blamed ‘fundamentalist’ gay activists for ‘killing’ his TV chat show. The actor – whose Up Late programme has been axed after he called a photographer a ‘c***sucking f**’ – said US campaigners such as Rich Ferraro had fanned the flames of the scandal. ‘This is probably one of Rich Ferraro’s greatest triumphs,’ the 55-year-old said of the Glaad group spokesman. ‘They killed my show. And I have to take some responsibility for that myself.’ MSNBC, which cancelled Up Late after suspending Baldwin for two weeks, said: ‘This is a mutual parting and we wish Alec all the best.’

Christian Bale deeply regrets his infamous foul-mouthed rant on a film set in 2008. Ban James over ‘slur’, say 6,000
James Arthur should be banned from returning to The X Factor for his homophobic remarks, say fans. Almost 6,000 have ‘liked’ the Facebook page ‘Drop homophobe James Arthur from X Factor’ after he used the term ‘f***ing queer’ in a rap song. Arthur exacerbated the issue by sending abusive text messages to fellow X Factor graduate Lucy Spraggan, who is a lesbian, when she challenged his views. The spat was leaked on Twitter by Spraggan, 22. Middlesbrough-born Arthur, 25, is set to appear on this weekend’s
show, but the Facebook page calls on ITV to drop his performance, and wants sponsors TalkTalk and Domino’s to boycott the show. The Facebook page says letting Arthur plug his music on the show that made him would be ‘a massive slap in the face to everyone who has suffered homophobic abuse in the past.’ An ITV spokesman told Guilty Pleasures the show does not condone homophobia but added: ‘James Arthur has apologised for his remarks, making it clear he did not mean to cause any offence.’
Organisers of the February 19 awards in London choose a different figure from the design world each year for the trophy. Treacy designed the ‘toilet seat’ hat worn by Princess Beatrice at the 2011 British royal wedding. He said: ‘Music has always been my inspiration and I’m fortunate to have worked with some of the music industry’s Hat’s crazy: Treacy and Grace Jones greatest artists.’

The sisters were only brought to book when they burned through £50,000 in a month, the jury heard. Accused: Elisabetta (left) and Francesca Grillo arrive at court yesterday to face claims they spent £685,000 on a credit card belonging to advertising guru Charles Saatchi (right) the pair gave in to temptation after being handed the card and got through £685,000 (€820,000) in four years. They bought clothes and accessories from Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Miu Miu and Prada, while heading off on luxury holidays around the world. ‘This case is about fraud... motivated by greed and that’s what this trial is about. Not about other issues of matrimonial discord or drug taking,’ Ms Carpenter told the jury. Earlier, Mr Metzer tried but failed to get the case abandoned saying the couple, who divorced in June, were just using it as ‘a convenient forum... to rehearse disputed issues between them’.
He added: ‘If Mr Saatchi is telling the truth, then Miss Lawson is a habitual criminal.’ The couple split after photos were published of Mr Saatchi, 70, holding his wife by the throat at a restaurant. He later accepted a caution for assault. Yesterday, Lawson, 53, thanked her followers for their support on Twitter. She also posted a recipe for an eggnogbased cake called Holiday Hotcake. The sisters, from Bayswater, west London, deny fraud and the case continues at Isleworth crown court.

Cash and carry firm has €30k hygiene fine cut THE operator of a Dublin cash and carry specialising in ethnic African food has had a fine for breaching hygiene standards cut from €30,000 to €1,000. Nigerian national John Johnson, who employs five people, feared he would be put out of business when he was hit with the €30,000 fine in July this year. He had been prosecuted at Dublin District Court by the Health Service Executive (HSE) on six counts of breaking hygiene of foodstuff regulations, at his business, the Bimdoc Cash and Carry, at Jamestown Business Park, in Finglas. Judge James O’Donohue yesterday ordered the cash and carry operator to pay €1,000, plus the HSE’s costs of about €6,100.

World Cup venue collapses Two dead as stadium to host opener is torn apart by NICOLE LE MARIE PART of the stadium that is supposed to be staging the opening match of next year’s World Cup collapsed yesterday, killing at least two people and injuring a third. A 500-tonne segment of the 70,000seat arena toppled and crashed into the outer wall – wrecking part of a giant LED panel that would have made the venue glow with light. Banks of seating were also destroyed in a huge setback for builders who had been nearing completion of the Itaquerao Stadium in São Paulo. The accident comes as several of the other 12 World Cup venues look unlikely to be ready for the end-ofDecember deadline laid down by football’s governing body Fifa. Bosses have warned they would not tolerate delays, even though the open-

the families,’ president Sepp Blatter said. A Fifa statement added: ‘The local authorities will fully investigate the reasons behind such a tragic accident.’ One of the dead workers, 42-
year-old Fabio Luis Pereira, was inside a truck that was hit by the toppled section of the stadium, owned by Brazilian club Corinthians. The other, Ronaldo Oliveira dos

Death in the Family Guy... to what end? I
T seems today, that all you see, is vileness on Twitter and dead dogs on TV. Family Guy fans are in mourning this week over the demise of their beloved Brian, the Griffin family dog, who was killed in a car accident during Sunday night’s episode. Social media went into meltdown, as the show’s regular viewers tweeted things like, ‘Why wasn’t it Meg?’ In the episode, Life Of Brian, the martini-quaffing pooch met his end in, admirably, quite a realistic way – he was run over while playing on the road outside the Griffin family home.
Family Guy fans have been shedding tears this week after one of their favourite characters was killed off. But is a TV show death a sign of desperation or is it about serving the best interests of the audience? ROSS McGUINNESS reports He was about to play a game of road hockey with a talking baby and was wearing a helmet but, still, it was realistic. It is baby Stewie Griffin who will miss Brian most, even more than the thousands of fans who reacted angrily to his death. An online petition from FamGuy fans to bring him back has reached more than 80,000 supporters. Television has a long tradition of
bumping off characters to increase ratings, from EastEnders’ Dirty Den Watts – who was killed off not once, but twice – to Bobby Ewing from Dallas. Far from attempting to boost viewer figures, Family Guy’s decision to bury Brian appears to be born out of boredom. The show’s creator, Seth MacFarlane, who also voiced Brian, has hinted in recent interviews the show
news@metroherald.ie has had its day. Could he be deliberately annoying his audience in order to hasten that end? Or have the writers of the Fox show simply run out of ideas? Family Guy has replaced Brian with Vinnie, an animated mutt who is voiced by The Sopranos actor Tony Sirico. So what does it all mean for fans of Family Guy? Will anyone keep watching now that it has killed off 50 per cent of its interesting characters (in case you were wondering, the other 50 per cent is a time-travelling baby)? Will it set a trend in doggie deaths on TV shows? Anyone still getting over the loss of Bouncer from Neighbours – the greatest ever TV canine, so great he even had his own dream sequence – might fear for the safety of the likes of Santa’s Little Helper (The Simpsons writers have promised a major character death soon). The reaction to Brian’s death shows fans take the fate of their favourite TV characters very seriously indeed – even if they are animated. ‘Family Guy, like nearly all animated shows, lives in the eternal now,’ said Michael Moran, TV writer at The People. ‘There’s a notional continuity, and call-backs to events in the past, but nothing really changes. The characters don’t age and no one dies. Except this week. Brian’s dead. He was, along with Stewie, one of my favourite characters in the show.’ Mr Moran said Brian’s death fits in with Family Guy’s divisive history – the show is cartoon Marmite. ‘I’m not sure how I’m going to

HrISTOPHEr Hooton, TV writer at Metro.co.uk, thinks Brian was a ‘strange choice to axe’. He said: ‘Brian was the counterweight to the show’s dimwitted protagonist Peter Griffin and served as the voice of reason who would call the rest of the family out on their neuroses. ‘I think a lot of fans identified with him most. ‘In dramas, major character deaths can be thrilling and add a whole new dimension to a show, but with a cartoon with no over-arching narrative, their death doesn’t really serve a purpose, other than to provide one less mouthpiece through which to come up with gags.’ The outpouring of love for Brian, however, shows viewers thought more of him than a mere purveyor of jokes. Cartoons have become more adult in recent years but it’s unclear yet if audiences go to them for the same dramatic arcs as in live-action shows. ‘Viewers come to rely on longrunning cartoons as a dependable and steadfast source of comedy and through its endless repeats Family Guy has become like televisual wallpaper for many,’ said Hooton. ‘As such, fans are looking for a sense of familiarity, not dramatic plot twists.’ He thinks the writers are simply out of ideas and Brian was an easy target – but said he might be back. Mr Moran agrees. ‘Deaths in cartoons, like deaths in comic books, seem more about getting the title in the papers than they are about creative decisions,’ he said. ‘Batman came back, Captain America came back, Superman came back.’ Character: But how can a Brian Griffin dead dog be resurFrom: Family Guy rected? ‘I’ve got Cause of death: Run one or two ideover by a car before as,’ said Mr playing street hockey Moran. ‘Let’s Tear factor: Just two put it this way. Church’s yellowing 17th century book of psalms sets a new auction record
€10m answer to their prayers A YELLOWING book of psalms dating back to 1640 has sold for a record €10.5million. The Bay Psalm Book – believed to be one of the first titles printed in the US – was one of two owned by Boston’s Old South Church,
by JOEL TAyLOR which voted to sell it to raise funds. ‘This is enormous for us,’ said the Rev Nancy Taylor, senior minister of the church. ‘It is life-chang-
ing for the ministries we can do.’ The book was bought over the phone by US businessman and philanthropist David Rubenstein, who plans to lend it to libraries around the country. There are only 11 surviving copies of
the book that was published 20 years after the pilgrims landed at Plymouth. John Hames Audubon’s Birds Of America held the previous record for a printed book when it sold for about €8.5million in 2010.

Ms Bonsom claimed she now hated pianos so much she could not stand to even see them in films. But Ms Martin’s playing did not surpass the 30-decibel limit allowed.

Blair ‘plotted attack to topple Mugabe’
TONY BLAIR was yesterday accused of trying to recruit allies to help Britain invade Zimbabwe during his time as prime minister. The former leader was accused by ex-South African president Thabo Mbeki of secretly seeking support to topple ruler Robert Mugabe. Mr Mbeki said in a TV interview: ‘We had come under pressure that we needed to cooperate in some scheme. It was a regime change scheme, even to the point of using military force, and we were saying no.’
by DANIEL BINNS Mr Blair’s spokesman insisted he had ‘never asked anyone’ to join military action. Mr Mbeki, president from 1999 to 2008, claimed he rejected the invasion plan because he believed Zimbabwes should solve its own problems. Mugabe – blamed for human rights abuses and fixing elections – accused Britain of wanting to seize power from him in 2007. He hit out after former head of the armed forces Lord Guthrie revealed

DISGRACED former premier Silvio Berlusconi was expelled from the Italian Senate over his tax fraud conviction yesterday. The vote bars him from office for at least six years, but his political career will go on. Brazen Berlusconi, 77, maintained his defiance ahead of the vote, declaring a ‘day of mourning for democracy’ before thousands of cheering, flag-waving supporters outside his residence in Rome. Even though he will not hold a seat in parliament, he is expected to remain influential in Italian politics. He has relaunched his Forza Italia party and analysts say he still commands millions of supporters and can finance his own campaigns. ‘No political leader has suffered a persecution such as I have lived through,’ he claimed. ‘It is a bitter day, a day of mourning. ‘We must stay on the field, we must not despair if the leader of the centre-right is not a senator any more,’ he said. ‘There are leaders of other parties who are not parliamentarians.’ He was joined by his 28-year-old fiancée Francesca Pascale at the event. In August, Italy’s high court upheld Berlusconi’s tax fraud conviction and four-year prison term. The term was reduced automatically to one year under a general amnesty. He will serve his time either under house arrest or through public service.

Aggression link a subtle and sad depression stigma
W
hile i am sure your (wonderful) paper will not be the only one, i don’t understand why your front page article yesterday on a man twice threatening to kill people referred to the fact that he had depression twice in as little as 300 words. There is no correlative link between depression and aggression. it upsets me that we as a society seem to want to get rid of the depression stigma, yet references like this are still constantly made. if that man was disabled physically, would it be implied that perhaps it had lead to the anger that resulted in him producing a gun on two occasions? As someone who has struggled with depression and constantly debates whether or not i should be more open about it, it’s things like this that make me think i can’t because people will assume i’m (for want of a better word) crazy. Tongue piercing hope for paralysed MoST people get a tongue piercing to make a fashion statement, but now the Goth favourite has a medical use that could transform the lives of paralysed people confined to a wheelchair. A small titanium device attached to a piercing can be used to send a wireless signal and control a wheelchair. The device offers greater independence to those with
tetraplegia – the inability to move the torso and limbs. Jason disanto, left paralysed after a diving accident in 2009, said it was a great improvement over ‘sip-and-puff’ wheelchairs, which are controlled by blowing air in and out of a tube. ‘With the sip-and-puff system, there is always a straw in front of my face. With the tongue drive, people can see you, not just your
adaptive equipment,’ he said. Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology, tested the tongue drive system (TdS) on 23 able-bodied participants and 11 people with tetraplegia. All were able to use the technology, which can also control computers, play video games and dial phones, in half an hour. However, more development is needed before the technology can be made available.

Tonight’s season finale is full of bizarre twists and some strange scenarios – just what we’ve come to expect from this supernatural head-scratcher. Tom Selleck (below) is back in grandstanding form as NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, the patriarch of an IrishAmerican clan with crime-fighting blood coursing through their veins. As the Reagans return for a fourth season, Frank is determined the family should unite to nail whoever’s responsible for the death of an NYPD officer, killed during an armed robbery. But what will he make of daughter Erin (Bridget Moynahan) daring to question whether they’re looking in the right place?

very so often, the fashion pendulum swings in favour of comfort – you know, styles we can actually wear without being subjected to pain. Thankfully, the swing is currently in our favour. As designers continue to embrace ‘real’ clothes with the lifestyles of women in mind, flat shoes are officially back in the fold. ‘Designers are recognising that women lead busy lives and need to be able to run around, so they are creating striking flats that can be worn all day

love them for helping to change your posture and give you a confident swagger, but they’re also the reason you won’t be walking many steps at all. And it’s one thing to admire the construction and design of a beautifully-made pair from afar, but a completely different matter to schlep around in them all day. And that’s why the return of flats is so good. With winter upon us, there couldn’t be a better time for fashion to be about comfort. They’re not your usual, run-of-the-mill flats, mind you. These aren’t the styles you pull out of your handbag at the end of a night out. The flat’s latest incarnations come in many different guises – and they’re special. Monk straps, tassel loafers and brogues abound – tapping into the masculine trend perfectly. They work well with cropped, tailored trousers, button-down shirts and this season’s favourite, the oversized coat.
O
n the other end of the spectrum, we have jazzy flats, perfect for evening dos, along with a range of pretty, feminine styles – which often come with ladylike bows in leather or velvet and work well styled with the new fullskirted midi. For those willing to go bold, take style cues from Stella McCartney and embrace what everyone’s dubbing the ‘ugly shoe’. With soles so big they look medical, they’re not for the fainthearted. But while you may mock now, give it a few months and I
promise you’ll change your mind. The current obsession with flats started, as so many trends have, with Alexa Chung. The 30-year-old fashion favourite has been championing them for years. From Charlotte Olympia’s kitty flats to chic Oxfords, she’s worn them all – on many occasions, on the red carpet among a sea of women in towering heels. But she’s not alone. At the shows in September, front-rowers were championing them too; it’s as if, almost overnight, OTT styles have become outdated and now look,

dare I say it, a bit try-hard. It’s a trend that’s been brewing for some time but really came to the fore for autumn/ winter 2013, with the emphasis on masculine tailoring and quality investment pieces. In this new mood, practicality rules and there’ss a new feeling of power in going understated. They work with everything new this season – the kilt, the oversized coat and the punk and leather trend – and there’s a wide variriety to choose from.

Music to our years Harry White, editor of The Encyclopaedia of irish Music, reminisces on the experience of compiling the handsome two-volume tome that provides a comprehensive guide to the country’s rich musical heritage Hazel Lavery’s cool,, ns appraising stare adorns the slipcase of The Ency-clopaedia of Music in Ireland (EMIR), and I am staring back at her now as I write this. She was an
American heiress transformed into an elegant (and very beautiful) personification of Ireland by her husband, the great portraitist Sir John Lavery, who was commissioned by the Irish Free State to create this image for the new bank notes in 1928. Thirty years later, when I was born, she was still going strong. Then she disappeared, sometime in the 1980s,
and now she is back again, this time representing music (and not money), in Ireland. ‘It’s a whole new life for her’, I said to myself, when I first beheld the magnificent appearance of EMIR in its red, clothbound volumes which slot neatly into that handsome slipcase.
When the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, launched EMIR on October 4 last, he
shrewdly remarked that music in Ireland can be ‘a rather contentious subject’, an observation that dre an affectionate laugh of drew recognition from the 350 or so people gathered in the Freemasons’ Hall in Dublin for the occasion. And he was right: there is such a strong sense of ownership and pride which attaches to different constituencies and practices of Irish music that it is practically impossible to avoid some degree of controversy in any scholarly engagement with the subject as a whole. That is one reason why EMIR, from the outset, was conceived not as a formal history of music in Ireland, but as a map of Irish musical
experience designed to take account of so many different avenues and agencies of music as a manifestation of Irish history itself. EMIR countenances traditional music, popular music, church music, theatre music, art music, domestic music, public music and so on, across some 2,000 individual entries.
As Barra Boydell and I edited EMIR, our work patterns were
determined by the order in which the material reached us: each article went from the contributor to his, or her, subject editor (a process which often involved substantial interventions), and thence to the executive editors of the project (more of the same), and finally to Barra and me. Barra would bring these materials to my room in UCD (where we met three times a week for two years), and I would read each article aloud, sentence by sentence, so that even then, hardly a single entry went by unchanged, as Barra introduced our joint amendments into his computer and I marked up the same alterations onto the hard copy. iandodds.co.uk
sHELf spAcE A Story LAteLy toLd by Anjelica Huston simon & schuster HHHHI That this is a classier take on the celebrity autobiography is signalled by the heavyweight endorsements on the dustjacket. You won’t find thrice Booker-nominated colm Tóibín enthusing on the back of katie Price’s latest batch of revelations. coming of age in ireland, London and new York foregrounds an often isolated young woman’s struggle to be recognised ognised by a distant, occasionally cruel, yet charismatic father. Huston was two when her father moved her, her elder brother Tony and their mother Ricki to a decaying ancestral Galway pile. When the director was at the The Big House, they entertained stars like Peter o’Toole, and some of the first toddler snaps of anjelica were taken by Magnum legend Robert capa. When she is ten, her mother moves her children to London but tragedy strikes when her mother dies in a car crash. Huston’s writing has the kind of laconicism you associate with her acting: often what is not plumbed is just as revelatory. i look forward to the second volume, out next year, that will begin in 1970s Hollywood. siobhan Murphy
the thing About december by donal ryan doubleday ireland HHHHH donal Ryan’s debut novel The spinning Heart was rejected no less than 47 times before it was picked up by dublin’s Lilliput Press, and later longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. His follow-up novel indubitably places the Tipperary native in the pantheon of great contemporary irish writers. although it was written before The spinning Heart, The Thing about december is fractionally more accomplished and pulses with scintillating prose that belies its sorrowful subject
matter. our narrator is young ‘gom’ Johnsey cunliffe who takes the reader through one eventful year of his life. a period marked by profound loss that sees him both orphaned and vilified by land-hungry locals, it’s not entirely devoid of hope – Johnsey builds a tentative relationship with a nurse who cares for him after he takes a hiding and forges a tender and comic friendship with Mumbly dave, the garrulous patient he shares a ward with. Ryan’s shrewd account of life in contemporary rural ireland, with all its attendant kindnesses and cruelties, feels both raw and astonishingly authentic. Daragh Reddin

One day in the summer of 2010 we had just finished editing the entry on The Boomtown Rats and Barra reminisced about his own memories of Bob Geldof and the song I Don’t Like Mondays in particular. ‘Okay’, I said, ‘What’s next?’ Barra handed me a fresh entry. I looked at it for a moment and said, ‘From The Boomtown Rats to The Chapel Royal: that’s the essence of this whole project’.
It’s been a long journey, almost ten years in
sands of emails, print-outs, drafts and proofs to the appearance of EMIR at last, and throughout this entire process there was hardly a day when it failed to occur to me how this simply would never have happened at all without the freely-given expertise, research, advice and countless hours of work by so many people, all of them dedicated to bringing this essence to life. I like to think that Hazel Lavery, that courageous and beautiful woman, would have been happy with our efforts to trace the experience of music in Ireland. I also think that she would have endorsed the publication’s representation of Ireland’s musical relations to the world at large. It has truly been a labour of love. That, too, is something Hazel would have understood.
Harry White is general editor (with Barra Boydell) of The Encyclopaedia Of Music In Ireland, published by UCD Press (www.ucdpress.ie) in two volumes. EMIR is available from bookshops and online for €100.

Plzen twice equalised but strikes from Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko saw the hosts, who have already secured a spot in the last 16, record the victory. Although returning goalkeeper Joe Hart conceded two goals on the night, he had no chance with either strike and made a number of fine saves during the match. Sergio Aguero, who would go off at the break with an injury, opened the scoring for City from the spot in the 33rd minute. However, Tomas Horava stunned the home crowd with a 25-yard rocket which flew into the top corner ten minutes later. Samir Nasri put City ahead again in the 65th minute, yet Plzen hit back four minutes later through Stanislav Tecl. City sealed the win through substitute Negredo’s 78th-minute goal and a header from Dzeko late on.
Simon’s silent treatment is just fine by Mignolet SIMON MIGNOLET insists he is happy to be the quiet man of Anfield as long as his Liverpool side remain in the title race. The Belgium goalkeeper has made an immediate impact on Merseyside after signing in the summer. Mignolet has kept four clean sheets as the Reds stayed in touch with leaders Arsenal, who are four points clear in the Premier League. The impact of the £9million (€10.7m) signing from Sunderland has been felt but, while performances have been impressive, it is more a goalkeeper’s mistakes, highlighted by the woes of Joe Hart, which make headlines. But that is just fine by Mignolet, who is happy just to blend into the background at Anfield. ‘As a goalkeeper most of the time you are in the limelight for mistakes and for bad reasons.’ ‘If you go unnoticed you have not made any mistakes. I don’t read the reports – sometimes they are good, sometimes they are bad. Mignolet admitted he thought Liverpool’s hopes of a point at Everton in Saturday’s 3-3 draw had gone when Romelu Lukaku restored the Toffees’ lead with eight minutes left at Goodison Park.

AVb puzzled by his lack of firepower ANDRE Villas-Boas admits he is not sure why his strikers are struggling to find the net at the moment. Tottenham have a chance to put their poor form behind them when they take on Tromso in the Europa League this evening. But they head into the game with a real shortage of goals and Spurs boss Villas-Boas said: ‘[Roberto] Soldado, Jermain Defoe and [Emmanuel] Adebayor are all proven scorers, so we can’t get much better than these three. ‘The only thing that we have to do is make sure that we double the amount of opportunities we create to make sure a couple finish in the back of the net.’ Villas-Boas has left ten players at home for the trip to Norway where a win would guarantee Spurs top spot in Group K with one match to go.

Irons midfielder Cole was unhappy at being hauled off before half-time in Saturday’s 3-0 london derby defeat at home to his former club Chelsea. ‘The manager has been great to me since I came back,’ Cole said. ‘The only way I’ll be leaving is if they tell me they don’t want me any more.’

High fives all round as united progress in style MANCHESTER UNITED produced easily their most impressive performance of the season in Germany last night as the Reds stunned Bayer Leverkusen and swept into the knockout stages of the Champions League. Last night’s game had potential danger written all over it but with Wayne Rooney in inspirational form again, David Moyes’ men made sure of their place in the last 16, playing some

Mexes (pictured) missed the 1-1 draw with Genoa on Saturday with a pain in his left eye, diagnosed as central serous retinopathy, which can be caused by too much sun. But Italian paper Tuttosport suggested Mexes was hitting the sunbeds too often. Whether or not this is true, we’re guessing he’s glad he missed Milan’s trip to brass-monkeys Glasgow to play Celtic this week.

the first goal coming after 22 minutes when Shinji Kagawa fed Ryan Giggs – the Welsh great a starter two days before his 40th birthday – who in turn supplied Rooney on the left. His pinpoint cross found Antonio Valencia, who shot in off a post. The lead was doubled eight minutes later when a terrific free-kick from Rooney was headed into his own net by Emir Spahic. United remained in
cruise control after the break, and Jonny Evans scored their third after 65 minutes, the defender finishing from close range after Patrice Evra flicked on a corner and Rooney’s shot was saved by Bernd Leno. Rooney set up Chris Smalling to tap in for a fourth, and Nani applied the gloss late on when he was supplied by Giggs and rounded the keeper to score a fifth for the rampant Reds.
First foremost for Cech after Blues’ Basle day at the office
Goalkeeper Petr Cech admits Chelsea have made their lives more difficult by losing to Basle for a second time in Champions League Group E. Blues boss Jose Mourinho (pictured) had targeted a win to render the result in next month’s final group match with Steaua Bucharest meaningless but now his side must win to be certain of top spot. Cech’s performance in goal was the one bright aspect for Chelsea, who failed to muster a meaningful effort on goal but still stumbled to last-16 qualification as a result of Schalke’s draw with Steaua. ‘We could’ve made it clear,’ Cech said. ‘[But] we’ve made it a bit more complicated for ourselves. We qualified, that’s the main thing. We

In the first minute we gave them hope. It became difficult. ‘In the second half we improved, there were situations when we could have scored but it was the last touch that was missing. Rooney rampant on big night for Moyes spurs right behind me, insists AVB
My oh Moyes: David smiles as Utd qualify by jAMEs bOyLAn DAVID MOYES savoured his first significant feat as Manchester United manager after his side powered into the last 16 of the Champions League. After an indifferent start to his tenure, the feeling Moyes is finally getting to grips with his new job continues to grow as United walloped Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 in imperious fashion last night. Wayne Rooney starred for the visitors as he pulled the strings along with Ryan Giggs, who turns 40 tomorrow. Strikes by Antonio Valencia, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Nani and an Emir Spahic own goal sent United three points clear in Group A. Moyes’ men are unlikely to be knocked off their perch by second-placed Shakhtar Donetsk because of their superior goal difference. Back in Manchester, United’s already-qualified rivals City beat Viktoria Plzen 4-2. Elsewhere, a stunning freekick opener from Gareth Bale helped Real Madrid to a 4-1 victory over Galatasaray.

Tough decisions: Shane Jennings
‘Of course it would. they know as well as everybody else that no single player is bigger than the club,’ Jennings said. ‘thankfully, we don’t have lads who think they are and they [Heaslip and O’Brien] don’t think they are. We will wait and see if any of those rumours you hear come to fruition or if there is any truth behind them, but they are very proud to be Leinster lads. ‘they have done an awful lot for the club over the years and i think they want to be more
successful as well, so i know the players, coaches and supporters want them to stay. things happen. if they move on, you move on and try to replace them and try to get better. But hopefully it won’t happen.’ Looking back on his own midcareer move to Leicester in 2005, Jennings knows how difficult a decision it is for irish players to go abroad. ‘yeah, it’s emotional. i didn’t want to go. i was still crying in the car with my Mum and she’s
