TV chef took drugs to cope with break-up from ‘brutal’ Saatchi
nigella: i did use cocaine NIGELLA Lawson yesterday admitted taking cocaine and cannabis but furiously denied she was an addict. The TV chef told a court she turned to drugs to help her cope with the bitter breakdown of her marriage to multi-millionaire Charles Saatchi – a ‘brutal man’ she accused of ‘intimate terrorism’. She said she also used cocaine six times with first husband John Diamond, who died of cancer in 2001. But she rejected as ‘completely false’ claims that she left stashes of cocaine hidden above her toilet seat, rolled-up bank notes and ‘credit cards with white powder lying around’ the house she shared with him. Instead, she declared from the witness box: ‘I do not have a drugs problem – I have a life problem.’ Lawson, 53, was giving evidence at the trial of her personal assistants, sisters Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo, who deny defrauding the

couple of almost €850,000. In an email, Mr Saatchi, 70, had claimed they would get away with their alleged crime because she was ‘off her head’ on drugs and did not notice the money going missing. Lawson admitted accepting cocaine from a friend in July 2010 when she was ‘having a very, very difficult time’ and ‘felt subjected to intimate terrorism by Mr Saatchi’. She accused Mr Saatchi of threatening to ‘destroy her’ with false drug allegations. And she spoke for the first time about the moment the millionaire grabbed her by the throat while dining at a restaurant in central London last June. She claimed she had been discussing her desire for grandchildren when Mr Saatchi lashed out, saying: ‘I’m the only person who should be giving you pleasure.’

Britney a hit in Sin City Flame throwers, jugglers and dancers welcome Spears to casino spot by AnDREi HARMSwORTH BRITNEY SPEARS announced her arrival in Las Vegas yesterday with a live carnival straight from one of her music videos. The 32-year-old singer was welcomed by flame throwers, contortionists, snake charmers and dancers ahead of her residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. A part of the Strip was closed as she arrived at the casino with a convoy of black Cadillacs. Wearing a black cocktail dress with rhinestone top, Spears signed autographs for some of her ecstatic fans. She told the crowd of about 1,000 people that Las Vegas was now ‘her town’ – before leaving after a few minutes to catch a plane home to Los Angeles. Spears will perform 100 shows over the next two years in an intimate theatre with nightclub touches, including table and drinks service. Casino bosses say her residency could be extended if it is a success. Planet Hollywood president David Hoenemeyer said the star has ‘a remarkable following’. He added: ‘It’s a really big deal to have a star of her calibre performing.’

Garda chief ‘horrified’ at collusion by force’s mole Reaction: Justice Minister Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan at a press conference at Farmleigh House in Dublin after Judge Peter Smithwick published his findings Picture: PA

Ex garda rejects findings A FORMER Garda has rejected the findings of the Smithwick tribunal that he was trusted by Provos and helped members get false passports Retired Garda sergeant Leo Colton was one of three named officers cleared by the Smithwick Tribunal of colluding with the IRA on the day Chief Supt Harry Breen and Supt Bob Buchanan were murdered. But yesterday Mr Colton dismissed other findings against him by Judge Peter Smithwick.
Judge Smithwick found Mr Colton provided ‘relatively significant’ assistance to the Provisional IRA in 1995 and 1996 by getting former colleague Finbarr Hickey to sign false passport applications. Mr Colton resigned in 1991, days before a disciplinary inquiry was due against him over the issuing of a trade vehicle plate. He was on duty in Dundalk on March 20, 1989, the day the RUC officers were ambushed.
GARDA Commissioner Martin Callinan has said he is horrified a collusion inquiry has found that a terrorist mole within the force gave the iRA a tip-off that led to the murder of two RUC officers. Chief Supt Harry Breen and Supt Bob Buchanan were gunned down on March 20 1989 near the border in south Armagh, shortly after a meeting with gardaí in Dundalk. Commissioner Callinan said he accepted the conclusions arrived at by Judge Smithwick and said it is disappointing that no one has been
prosecuted to date for the murders. ‘To think that any member of my force would engage with the iRA at any level is beyond comprehension. And to betray both themselves and my organisation in such a fashion is beyond me,’ he said. Taoiseach Enda Kenny also commented on criticisms of the current Garda force, within which the judge found ‘loyalty is prized above honesty’. Mr Kenny said: ‘it is true that in the past we have different reflections of culture in ireland… we are in a different space now’.

Your first baby is due next week. How are you coping under all the panto pressure?
I’m just about keeping upright. Every day the cast and crew see me waddling through the Helix and I can see them looking and thinking ‘she’s gonna pop tonight’ but so far he or she has been playing ball.
In terms of names, are we thinking Widow Twanky for a girl and Prince Charming for a boy? We have a few names in mind but thankfully nothing embarrassingly festive!
Your husband Aidan not only designed the set but is also starring in the show. How is he coping? He’s been so busy re-

Six years ago I went to The Helix management and I said ‘wouldn’t it be great if you did a panto each year?’ and ‘by the way, I’d love to produce it for you’. I was very gung-ho, they took a risk and now it’s paying dividends.
Is it true the Tighe family home is something of a panto museum? In a way, yes! My mum

The Tighe family has been steeped in all things panto related for several years now. How did it come about? When

Drugs giant Pfizer to cut 150 jobs at Kildare plant
PHArMACEuTiCAl company Pfizer is planning to let 150 workers go at one of its plants in ireland. The company said the redundancies at its site in Newbridge, Co Kildare, are a result of increased competition. in 2010, the drug manufacturer announced it was making 275 workers redundant at the same site. Most of these job losses came this year.
by bRiAn HuTTOn
its vice president Paul Duffy said the expiry of patents on key medicines and more generic competition meant the company has been forced to cut back on manufacturing. However he insisted that ireland remains a key strategic location for Pfizer. The Newbridge plant, which em-
ploys about 670 people of Pfizer’s 3,200-plus irish workforce, makes three billion tablets and 55 million packs of medication every year. representatives of trade union Siptu will meet Pfizer management tomorrow. Organiser Frank Jones, who represents about 70 workers, said the cuts are deeply distressing to workers and their families and on the area.

5,000 fewer signed Bank of Ireland to on dole last month repay State €1.9bn THE number of people signing on last month fell to just over 390,000. Official figures showed 5,000 fewer people claimed benefits in November when the unemployment rate fell to 12.5 per cent, its lowest since July 2009. The Central Statistics Office said the number of long-term claimants on the dole for more than a year had also fallen to 179,758. There were 25,700 fewer on benefits compared to November 2012, including an 11.1 per cent fall in under-25s. The Small Firms Association’s Avine McNally welcomed the fall in under-25s but said more needs to be done as the figures are influenced by emigration.
BANK of Ireland raised €580million through a share sale as part of a milestone deal to repay €1.9billion to the State, handing the Government a timely funding boost. The plan to redeem preference shares issued when the bank was rescued in 2009 will cut its reliance on the Government less than two weeks before Ireland becomes the first eurozone country to exit an EU/IMF bailout. Finance Minister Michael Noonan said the deal would generate a profit for the taxpayer. ‘The Irish banking system is recovering,’ he added.
Meanwhile, salaries are being pushed up in niche areas in iT and financial services, according to a report by a recruitment agency. Brightwater recruitment has found salary increases of up to ten per cent in the iT sector, with companies in some areas prepared to pay in excess of boom year rates in order to get the right candidate.

The actor – who split from his first wife Ryan Haddon in 2007 – walked down the aisle once more at the courthouse in Coral Gables in Florida on Monday. Rape, torture and murder scandal of n Korean jails by HAyDEn sMiTH INMATES are forced to dig their own graves and women are raped before ‘disappearing’ from North Korea’s notorious political prison camps, a new report claims. Conditions in two of the biggest camps – known as Kwanliso 15 and 16 – were said to be ‘dire’, with torture ‘rampant’, public executions common and prisoners dying of malnutrition or overwork, Amnesty International said. The allegations were made in ‘harrowing’ new testimonies by former detainees and officials. An ex-security official – known as Mr Lee – at Kwanliso 16 described execution methods used during the 1980s and 1990s. He told how detainees were forced to dig their own graves and then killed with hammer blows to their necks. Prison officers would also strangle inmates and then beat them to death with wooden sticks and women were ‘disappeared’ after being raped. ‘After a night of “servicing” the officials, the women had to die because the secret could not get out,’ he told the human rights group. ‘This happens at most of the political prison camps.’ Prisoners in the camp spend most of their time being forced to work in extremely dangerous conditions with inadequate food and very little sleep, it was claimed. Kim Young-soon, a former prisoner in camp 15 between 1980 and 1989,described seeing two inmates who were caught attempting to escape being publicly executed. ‘The prisoners were tied to wooden stakes and shot three times in their head, chest and feet,’ she said. The report’s author, Amnesty International’s North Korea researcher Rajiv Narayan, called on the country’s authorities to acknowledge the existence of the camps and close them. ‘People are sent to the political prison camps without charge, let alone a trial, many of them simply for knowing someone who has fallen out of favour,’ he said.

A CALIFORNIA woman has pleaded not guilty to what is believed to be the first traffic offence alleging a motorist was using Google’s new computer-in-glasses invention. The device, known as Google Glass, features a thumbnail-size transparent display above the right eye. The technology will not be made widely available to the public until next year, but Cecilia Abadie was one of about 10,000 ‘explorers’ who received the glasses earlier this year as part of a try-out. Her case highlights several issues, including distracted driving, wearable technology
by cOn DOHERTy that may become mainstream, and how laws lag behind technological developments. Abadie was stopped in October on suspicion of driving at 80mph (129kph) in a 65mph zone on a San Diego freeway. The California Highway Patrol officer saw she was wearing Google Glass and added a citation usually given to people driving while a video or TV screen is on in the vehicle. Abadie, a software developer, denied both charges in San Diego traffic court. Her lawyer William Concidine said she will
Hackers accused of €700k bitcoin fraud TWO hackers have been arrested on suspicion of creating a fake €700,000 cache of the bitcoin internet currency in Germany. Police said the two used the processing power of linked hacked computers to generate the bitcoins. They are also investigating further suspected fraud, violations of copyright law and offences related to the distribution of pornography. The country’s Federal Criminal Police Office said the investigation began into three people suspected of spreading a virus over the net, creating a remotely controlled network of compromised computer systems. Bitcoins are a digital currency, created and maintained entirely on the internet.
Uptalk stereotype is proven wrong SCIENTISTS have bust the stereotype of ‘uptalkers’ being insecure. The way of speaking, synonymous with the movie Clueless, is marked by a rise in pitch at the ends of sentences, and associated with young women from California. Uptalkers made statements, as well as ask questions, but the difference was so subtle non-uptalkers often missed it, the study, presented at the annual meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in San Francisco, found.
argue the glasses were not on when she was driving, but activated when she looked up at the policeman as he stood by her car. The device is designed to respond to a head tilt by waking itself up. Mr Concidine also said the vehicle code listed in the prosecution applies to video screens in vehicles and is not relevant to mobile technology such as Google Glass. Police declined to comment, but at the time of Abadie’s citation, the highway patrol said anything which took a driver’s attention from the road was dangerous and should be discouraged.

A POST-mortem shows Fast & Furious star Paul Walker was killed in a car crash by the combined effects of the impact and subsequent fire. Walker, a passenger in the car driven by his friend Roger Rodas, died last Saturday when the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT smashed into a lamp post and tree then exploded in flames. Investigators believe speed was a factor in Rodas losing control of the car.

UNEAR UNEARTHED from the ‘pit of bones’, it sheds new light on our evolution. The w world’s oldest human DNA has been rrecovered from the thigh bone of an early human, or hominin, who walk the Earth 400,000 years ago. walked Scientists were able to reconstruct it from 2g of powder taken from remains that were dug up in the in an underground cave known as ‘the pit of bones’ in Sierra de Atapuer northern Spain. Atapuerca, The mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) shows the hominin shared a link with the mysterious Asian group the Denisovans who date back 700,000 years.
It has pushed understanding of human evolution 200,000 years further back from the late to middle pleistocene period, researchers say. Evolutionary anthropologist Dr Matthias Meyer from Germany’s Max Planck Institute said: ‘The fact the mtDNA shares a common ancestor with Denisovan rather than Neanderthal mtDNAs is unexpected since its skeletal remains carry Neanderthal derived features.’ It is thought the hominin was likely related to both Neanderthals and Denisovans or another group brought the DNA into the pit, which has yielded a total of 28 skeletons from the period.

Being a big noise in F1 can be a drag FOR many people, the draw of Formula 1 is baffling. Lots of cars, some clearly faster than others, going round and round a track, with precious little excitement in a race that’s bound to be won by a cocky 26-year-old German. But don’t bother trying to pick an argument with a die-hard fan, the chances are they won’t be able to hear you. Acoustical engineer Craig Dolder at the University of Texas tested noise levels at last year’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Using a sound level meter, Mr Dolder stood within 25m of the track among fellow fans at three different places. Of the locations he tested, the loudest by far was at the end of a hairpin turn just before a straight. Mr Dolder calculated that without ear protection, a spectator would get 234 per cent of the daily allowed noise dosage based on US Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards. Using the much stricter standards of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, noise at this location leapt to 8,585 per cent. Where spectators stand probably does not matter as long as they are wearing good hearing protection, he said. He said: ‘You will still feel those loud noises in your body. But it’s not worth the risk of exposing yourself to that noise unprotected.’

’Tis the season to be upgrading, whether you like it or not, writes a well-endowed, but modest about it, ken rogan

istory has some fine rhetorical questions: Et tu, Brute? Why don’t we invade Russia? Who let the dogs out? But we don’t enjoy being asked rhetorical questions, do we? Especially not by our phones: ‘Upgrade now?’ It’s not a question, it’s notice: ‘Hello and welcome to cheerfully enforced change!’ Sure, you can bury your head in the sand for a few weeks, like I did, but eventually you’ll have to– ‘Upgrade now?’ And ’tis the season to upgrade. Fill your stocking with ‘new and improved’, or suffer the shame of replacing something when it breaks, which is what people used to do before Hoovers had operating systems. Now, alas, the ghosts in your machines have more birthdays than dogs. ‘Upgrade n–’.. DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO! And don’t puncture the illusion of my control. This is the ‘individual’ you’re talking to here, the great, blazing ‘i’ atop the dark tower of Appleearth, in the land of More-More
where shadowy retailers lie. And your pet device, whatever it is (laptop, tablet, half-breed, phone, touch, pod, it’s all the same beast), cleaves to be one with its master – it wants to update. It fights to connect, irks you with push notifications, and incessant requests to geo-locate or to occupy every corner of your various accounts and vomit back what it finds in a slew of comically inhuman verbs: ‘Roger has endorsed you!’ Oh really? Did Roger know I listed ‘big willy-ness’ as a skill on LinkedIn just to trip him up? The fool. But in fairness, Roger didn’t do it on purpose – unlike Mark Zuckerberg, who is the Michael O’Leary of updating. You don’t even get the pretend question, he just switcheroos your interface and gives all your pictures to some mega-dump of stock photography. And so what if the platform is buggy, crap and inane? Who else is going to fly you to Gdansk? They even update films now, which is quaintly described as ‘rebooting’ – previously something you only ever had to do with

Shoppers warned of online scams by HayDen SMiTH CYBER criminals are targeting Christmas shoppers with scams designed to cash in on record online shopping, security experts have warned. One phishing con sees fraudsters circulate thousands of emails disguised as Amazon order notifications. The fake messages contain malware which takes an inventory of all running processes on the infected machine and steals all auto-complete passwords from Mozilla Firefox. Fred Touchette, of web security company AppRiver, said: ‘Fake invoice scams are yearround but they are so much more effective during that time of year almost everyone is expecting packages from their online purchases. Be on the lookout for these attempts to take advantage of the season. They are out in full force.’ He said the scam also sought to take advantage of an Amazon promotion offering a 30day free trial of its prime service, which allows customers to receive free next-day delivery. Ahead of Cyber Monday, officials from the US and ten other countries seized 706 domain names set up to dupe consumers into buying fake goods.

Smartphone alert app to help track down abducted children Remembering the missing: Students from Davis College in Mallow launch pigeons to mark Missing Persons Day yesterday Picture: PA
GARDAÍ have launched an app that tells users when a child has been abducted. Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan said the Child Rescue Ireland Alert phone app would provide the public with vital information to help track down a missing child. ‘Over 50 per cent of the public in Ireland owns a smartphone and as a result the potential for quickly reaching vast numbers of the population with critical information is enormous,’ Mr Callinan said. A picture of the missing child, their nationality, date of birth, hair colour, height, weight and any other important details will be sent to phones – and anyone with information on the child’s whereabouts will be encouraged to contact gardaí. Parents who have the app installed will also be able to pre-load their own child’s details into their phone so that, should the child disappear, they have a picture and their vital statistics saved to give to officers.
by LynDSEy TELfORD According to Justice Minister Alan Shatter, who co-launched the app yesterday on Ireland’s first ever Missing Persons Day, it would be a ‘crucial component’ in the area of child protection and child welfare. A CRI alert was triggered last week when three youngsters went missing with their mother from Co. Roscommon. The children were found around five hours after the alert was triggered. The CRI alert system was launched in 2012 and has been triggered twice since then. Gardaí have to ensure strict criteria are met before the alert is raised, which includes that the child is under 18 and there is a reasonable belief the child has been abducted. These criteria will be applied to the app. Around 165 reports of missing people are made to gardaí every week and around 8,000 incidents are recorded a year.

PERIOD crime drama Ripper Street, which was filmed on location in Dublin, has been axed by the BBC after it failed to pull in a big enough audience. The occasionally grisly Victorian-era show will end when the second series winds up in just under a fortnight on BBC1. Actor Jerome Flynn (pictured) said the cast and team were told this week and were ‘in a state of a shock’. But he said there was still hope that BBC drama chiefs would change their minds. The programme – set in late 19th-century east London – launched just under a year ago and also stars Matthew Macfadyen. Flynn said: ‘It was up against I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! and that’s been cited as one of the reasons in terms of viewing figures.’ A BBC spokeswoman said: ‘We are very proud of Ripper Street. However, the second series didn’t bring the audience we hoped and in order to make room for creative renewal and new ideas it won’t be returning.’ Ripper Street creating more than 250 jobs investing €8million in Dublin during its 19-week Season One filming period in 2012. O
lympic diver Tom Daley has announced he is in a relationship with a man (metro Herlad, Tuesday). While it comes as no surprise to many people, i would just like to know why such a big deal has been made of it? in this day and age, is being gay really such a big thing that it ends up as a lead story on a newspaper page? it’s great to see he has received such positive support from fans and celebrities, but surely he shouldn’t have felt the need to disclose his private life to all and sundry. Penneys’ bright and sunny outlook
Lorna Weightman jets off to Paris for an exclusive look at Penneys’ upcoming spring/summer 2014 collection
H
ow does the song go? ‘I love Paris in the springtime...’ well having visited the city of love this week to preview Penneys’ spring/summer 2014 collection, I was certainly made to feel like the sun was shining and there were leaves on the trees on a chilly December day. In line with increasing demand for its fashion forward collections, Penneys (Primark outside of Ireland) is set to open five new stores in France from December onwards, and to celebrate that, its impending collection was showcased against the backdrop of its newest territory. It’s always hard to imagine the warmer seasons when we have not even hit the depths of winter, but within a room filled with pastels like soft lemon and seafoam, I instantly felt warmer. The story-lines carry a strong theme of femininity, from its catwalk inspired Sublime Luxe, which takes white to interesting levels with textures like organza and broderie anglaise, to Polaroid Nostalgia, a subtle tribute to the 1950s full of romantic fabrics like lace and Jacquard.

Decades feature heavily; paying a visit to the 1990s will be essential as varsity jackets, American style football jerseys, dungarees and sweatshirts are reinvented for another season. Going back in time to the 1940s, sugarcoated candy colours will be a big hit for Penneys, as it develops a vintage theme through fuller shaped skirts and a large selection of fitted dresses. Trends are easy to spot, with a ‘bib’ front pinafore making several appearances in different guises; in white and in candy-striper colours which can be styled on their own, or with a collared shirt underneath as an extra layer. Shirt and blouse styles have structure; a more box shape to be precise, consistent in sheer shirt dresses to short sleeved blouses, making it easy to mix and match the story-lines across the collection (and a very clever buying decision if you ask me). What makes this collection make my fashionfilled heart flutter is its ability to cater for all Penneys customers.

I
mAy be a little past the Dream Punk story with its fizzy drink logos and cartoon motifs, but i see myself being drawn to the designerinspired Sandstorm theme where classic tailoring meets contemporary fashion in statement jackets and brocade mini skirts, which will work perfectly with closet staples like plain tee-shirts and black tapered trousers. No one is left out. Accessories have been well thought out and are the perfect complement to every aspect of the collection. Brilliant platform sandals add that much-loved colour pop we associate with spring/ summer, balanced with sporty high tops, classic brogues and canvas slip on sneakers, catering for all our footwear needs next year. high summer will introduce indian influences in footwear and accessories with beautifully embellished strap sandals and clutch bags which will work stylishly with the jumpsuits and maxi dresses throughout the collection. When this collection starts to hit the shop floors from early 2014, i suggest you get there tout suite and start your holiday wardrobe a little early; it’s never too soon for sunshine.

hriSTmAS is a time to sparkle. The festive season is hot on our party heels, and time is running out to choose our outfit for Christmas Day. Like a smart suit for a job interview or a big white gown in your wedding day, Christmas has a dress code. At no other time of year do we have tinsel and fairy lights to compete with, so the festive season is our chance to dress a little OTT. i have worn full-length festive red for the past two Christmases. in 2011 it was a 1970s vintage maxi accessorised with antique jewellery. Last year i wore a deep red maxi dress from Coast. however, wrestling with the turkey and frying sprouts wearing a long frock was a health and safety disaster waiting to happen. So this year i’m opting for sparkles; sequins, metallics,
beading, lace and rich jacquard. Not to mention diamonds, (real or otherwise Santa, if you’re reading). One thing Dublin boutiques do best is beautiful evening wear. For a start, Powerscourt Townhouse is an Aladdin’s Cave of party dresses. The detail on this gold lace and sequin-trim dress (pictured below right, €240) by Caroline Kilkenny at the Design Centre is as intricate as snowflakes. Bow and Pearl in ranelagh is no exception. i love this Ayse sequinned skirt (pictured below, €90). i always choose dresses for Christmas Day, but this would be a great alternative teamed with a silk top and heels. Not forgetting the high Street. miss Selfridge does embellishment year-round, and has incorporated the winter pastel trend for Christmas 2013. in this silver and pale blue jacquard dress (pictured left, €55) i’ll feel like a sugar plum ice skater come Christmas Day. How to go Wilde (but not too wild) Hollywood actress Olivia Wilde shares her party beauty tips with Naomi Mdudu
I
t’s right after the international tour for her latest film, Rush, that I catch up with actress Olivia Wilde. since joining Revlon as a beauty ambassador in 2011, her make-up looks have been followed as closely as her starring roles and she’s more than happy to divulge the tricks she’s learned over the years. It’s all about learning about your face, she tells me. ‘I would never do a bold lip and a bold eye,’ she says. ‘It can be done well but I know I have exaggerated features, like a big jaw, so it just doesn’t work for me. It’s not a bad thing. It’s just a family trait and, as I’ve got older, I’ve learned how to work it.’ Instead, she advocates highlighting one feature. ‘Either go bold on the lips, eyes or with something you’re wearing. I think you should always take a risk with one piece. It’s important to have fun with it so either do a bright lipstick or bold eyeliner or some sort of exciting eye look that looks different.’ she also advocates a less-is-more approach for hair. ‘too many curls look a bit corny,’ she says. ‘It’s something I call the LA curl. It’s where people put their hair in a curling iron and don’t brush it out. It’s important to keep movement in your hair.’
While loose hair is her style of choice, Wilde doesn’t underestimate the power of an up-do. ‘they can really show off an eye look you’re sporting. But make sure it’s the right kind of up-do. You can’t do the whole Audrey Hepburn hair for a party because it’s too much.’ You’d be forgiven for thinking she’s a seasoned pro. As self-deprecating as she is, Wilde is no beauty novice. since following in the footsteps of Halle Berry and Emma stone at Revlon, she’s been sharpening up her beauty skills. In her clutch bag, she carries an arsenal of products. ‘I always pack an eyebrow pencil along with a concealer like Revlon’s Age Defying concealer and I also carry something for the lips. Revlon’s Ultimate suede lipsticks are great because they’re really moisturising but they stay. What you don’t want is a wet lipstick that, by the end of the night, is all over your face.’ Her party make-up collection is simple. It consists of Revlon’s Colorstay Foundation – ‘it stays where you put it’ – and eyeliner – ‘if I don’t have time, I would always go for eyeliner before even thinking about eye shadow.’ the finishing touches should always be on the skin, she says. ‘If you’ve got great skin and eyebrows, and liner and mascara on your eyes, you’re pretty much good to go.’

‘I’d forgotten why you make something up’

lizabeth Gilbert is about to take flight; she is in an airport, awaiting a plane to Atlanta. Somehow, it feels appropriate to interview her in transit. After all, this is the woman who gained renown with memoir Eat, Pray, Love about a journey she took through Italy, India and Indonesia to recover from a painful divorce. ‘I have been blessed with a gipsy bone,’ laughs Gilbert. ‘I’ve been travelling my whole life.’ The memoir spent four years on the New York Times best-seller list and sold more than 10million copies. Gilbert was further catapulted into the limelight when Julia Roberts played her in the 2010 film adaptation. The same year, she published Committed, A Love Story, exploring her ambivalence about marriage despite her happier relationship with second husband José Nunes, also known as ‘That Brazilian Guy from Eat, Pray, Love’
Fiction creates ‘wonder and delight’ you don’t find anywhere else, Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert tells Anita Sethi
(played by Javier Bardem, pictured below with Roberts). Her engrossing new fictional book signals a different kind of departure. The Signature Of All Things is an intricate, beautifully written historical novel, set in the 19th century. A female botanist, Alma Whittaker, is its heroine. ‘The novel began because I moved to the countryside, started gardening and was surprised by how quickly I fell in love with it,’ says Gilbert. Alma also takes a journey of discovery. ‘I wanted to write about a woman who never left a small area,’ says Gilbert. ‘But ultimately I had to put Alma on a boat. Not only am I incapable of resisting my own urge to travel, I’m incapable of resisting creating characters who do.’ A sense of organic growth permeates the novel and Gilbert speaks fascinatingly about creativity. ‘I think of creativity as a really interesting collaboration between human effort and some other mystery,’ she says. ‘Ninety-nine per cent of what I put into that book is labour: organising index cards, finding out facts. But, after taking all that information and inventing emotional lives, there’s nothing
New departure: Elizabeth Gilbert you could do to convince me that Alma is not a real person – that’s the mystery.’ After two memoirs, why return to fiction after 12 years? ‘I’d forgotten how and why you would make something up,’ says Gilbert. ‘I discovered you do it because it allows you to access a level of wonder and delight that you don’t get anywhere else.’
T
he novel is a paean to the 19th-century women of science who strove for achievement against the odds. ‘I think of everything I write as coming from a feminist standpoint,’ she says. ‘My initial
thought was to write about a woman of towering intellect unable to have her contribution recognised because she was a woman. Botany was the only science in which women were welcomed in the 19th century.’ The author, who was raised on a family holding in Connecticut and now lives in Frenchtown, New Jersey, is, as her heroine, wedded to her work. ‘I wanted to tell the story of a woman who loves her work,’ she says. Gilbert believes there aren’t enough characters like these. ‘I’ve been stubborn and devotional about writing for a long time,’ she says. ‘I pursue success and am not
afraid of ambition. I still love the work. I’ve loved it the whole time in a way that doesn’t have to do with its result. That’s been the greatest good fortune: to have something I love unconditionally – my writing.’ For Gilbert, it’s about enjoying the journey, not the destination. ‘I give everything I have to it and then what happens with it out in the world isn’t my business; it becomes superficial chatter in my brain that doesn’t affect anything in my heart. It’s important to find something you love so much that you care about the process more than the result.’ The Signature Of All Things (Bloomsbury) is out now
sHELfspAcE aLso out The Valley Of Amazement by Amy Tan Fourth Estate HHHII It says a lot for amy tan’s considerable powers as a storyteller that her new novel – her first since 2005 – retains its reader’s interest over almost 600 pages and innumerable plot twists that verge on the unlikely. the Joy Luck Club author has again mined her own family history, apparently inspired by the discovery that her own grandmother may have been a courtesan, to tell the involving story of Violet Minturn, brought up in the highclass shanghai brothel run by her white american mother Lulu. the first great shock in Violet’s young life is the discovery that, far from being a white american girl, she is half-Chinese. the second comes, after her mother is tricked into abandoning Violet to return to america,
when she is sold to another brothel as a virgin courtesan. although the plotting is overwrought at times, the Valley of amazement deals in the themes that tan excels at: cross-cultural Chinese-american identity; the revelations of the hidden lives of women and the inter-generational relationships between mothers and daughters – three generations are represented here, with Violet’s daughter completing the trilogy. Tina Jackson American Smoke by Iain Sinclair Hamish Hamilton
HHHII
Distinguished poet and writer Iain sinclair embarks upon a challenging, maddening, fascinating journey on the trail of the american Beat poets in this dense psychogeographic work – part-poetry, part-travelogue,
part-trawl through his own memories of fleetingly meeting many of the scene’s key players while a young man. the book is probably better approached by somebody with either an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Beats – so you’re intimately familiar with the names sinclair drops with little introduction – or no knowledge of them at all – so you can stop worrying who exactly it is that sinclair is banging on about and just enjoy his freewheeling, poetic language and subtly warped sense of humour. If, like me, you’re modestly familiar with the Beats, then american smoke will probably have more than its fair share of frustrations: in line with his title, perhaps, sinclair proffers thickets of tangential, whimsical details but little of real substance. But his language is rich and engrossing, and if it’s not always clear why he admires these poets, for the reader it’s mostly just enough that he’s excited. Andrzej Lukowski

Vins look set for win in Leinster club final by pAuL kEANE
HugH gill has backed red hot club colleague Mossy Quinn to shoot St Vincent’s to AiB leinster club football glory. Former Dublin star Quinn will link up with Diarmuid Connolly in a potentially devastating Vins forward line for Sunday’s provincial decider. But while Connolly is the current Dubs star, he’s just back from a two-game suspension and Quinn is the player bang on form. The placed ball specialist shot a stunning 1-8 in the semi-final defeat of Summerhill and will fancy his chances of leading Portlaoise’s demolition in Tullamore. ‘Mossy Quinn is probably playing the best football of his life at the moment,’ said former Dubs defender gill. ‘it’s huge to have Mossy around in this sort of form. He’s such a leader and an inspiration to the lads. But Portlaoise are no mugs. We played them in 2007 when we won leinster. They had a man sent off and we won by a good few points. But any team that then goes on and wins seven county championships in a row is not to be messed with. ‘They’ve a good few county players there too,’ he added. gill is still just 25 and another good performance at O’Connor Park could earn him his own ticket back into the Dublin scene. He was there under former boss Pat gilroy for a couple of seasons after Vins won the All-ireland club title in 2008, but injuries hampered him.
CR7 makes exhibition of himself ReAl Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is to open a museum dedicated to his favourite subject, himself. The former Manchester United star (pictured) will cut the ribbon when the doors are opened to the public later this month. The museum is in Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira where the great man was born 28 years ago. Footballs, photographs and trophies from his glittering career, which began at local side Andorinha in the early 1990s, will be among the items on show. A spokesman said: ‘Cristiano wants to give something back to Madeira and came up with the idea with his mother.’

JUNHUI saw his hopes of an amazing fourth successive ranking title disappear when Ricky Walden beat him 6-4 at the UK Championship in york yesterday. The Chinese player looked set to take the match into a decider, but missed a simple pink and Walden did not need a second invitation to seal his place in the last eight. ‘I couldn’t believe it,’ Walden told the BBC. ‘I thought we were definitely in for a decider and luckily for me I got my chance. ‘It was a tough game. He’s flying at the moment, scoring so heavy and he’s the man to beat. So when you do get your chance and you feel like you’ve blown it, there’s nothing worse. NORTH DiREcTiON TO MiLLENNiUM STADiUM GEoRGE NoRTH is targeting two wins over Leinster to keep his Northampton Saints side on course for a return trip to Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium for the Heineken Cup final next May. North knows every inch of the Millennium Stadium turf and would love nothing more than to crown his season with a trip to the home of Welsh rugby where Northampton were defeated by Leinster in the 2011 Heineken Cup final. Schedule cut after a tough Korea choice THE 2014 F1 calendar has been slashed by three grands prix due to problems with the venues in New Jersey, Mexico and South Korea. The announcement by the World Motor Sport Council will come as a relief to the 11 teams with Red Bull having described the prospect of 22 grand prix, listed in the provisional calendar in September, as ‘beyond the limit’. There will now be 219 races in 2014, one less than this year. Despite a 15-year contract being signed in June, the Grand Prix of America – along the banks of the Hudson River – has been shelved for a second successive year. Mexico was due to end a 22-year exile from the sport but the redevelopment of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez will take longer than expected. South Korea has faced financial difficulties since the race was first staged in 2010.
WARREN GATLAND would relish the chance to lead the British & Irish Lions for the second time on the tour to his native New Zealand in 2017. The Wales coach steered the Lions to a 2-1 triumph over Australia this year – their first series win since 1997 – and admits he would love another crack at the job against the All Blacks in four years’ time. ‘It was an incredible experience. To be involved, I was humbled and privileged,’ the 50-year-old said. ‘For me to go to New Zealand would be a great opportunity in 2017, but there is a huge amount of water to

against South Africa. He played in 15 international matches, including a World Cup finals tournament, before he managed to make his European debut for the Scarlets. He has managed to cram an awful lot into his short career to date with a fourth place finish in the World Cup in 2011, a Grand Slam in 2012, a second 6 Nations title in 2013, as well a series triumph in Australia with the Lions. But his attentions now switch to the Heineken Cup and trying to find a way to haul the Saints back into the reckoning for a quarter-final slot. Back-to-back wins over three-time champions Leinster – a club Northampton have never beaten in Europe – would be just the ticket. ‘It would be really nice to come home to Cardiff for the Heineken Cup final in May, but we have two very difficult games against Leinster to overcome before we can start thinking about that,’ said North. ‘Leinster have proven themselves on the European stage time after time. They have a very physical pack and some superb backs, so we are expecting two high-paced and very tough games. These are the games everyone looks forward to.’

Gatland faced criticism in the summer after he dropped Lions talisman Brian O’Driscoll for the third and deciding Test. The decision to drop the veteran Ireland centre was ultimately vindicated, however, as the Lions thrashed the Wallabies 41-16 in Sydney.

But Gatland admits he was shocked by the heated reaction from fans and media back in the British Isles to the decision. ‘I wasn’t [prepared],’ he added.’ ‘I think that people out in Australia weren’t aware of the almost hysteria that created but that’s sport and you’ve got to stand by your beliefs, put your hand on your heart and sometimes make some tough decisions.’

Nolan wins support after his hammering from fans by JOHN PAYNE WEST Ham midfielder Mark Noble has leapt to the defence of under-fire captain Kevin Nolan. Nolan, who scored ten goals last season, has not found the net since the opening day this term and the former Newcastle man has been substituted to the sound of ironic cheers from Hammers fans in their last three matches. The 31-year-old lasted 58 minutes of Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, which dragged Sam Allardyce’s side back into the Premier League relegation battle. But Noble says his midfield partner, who signed a five-year deal in 2011, remains a key figure at Upton Park. ‘Kev has been unbelievable for us,’ said Noble. ‘He’s big enough and strong enough to handle that sort of stuff, so I am sure he will be fine. ‘He is the gaffer’s man and looks

‘Kev is big and strong enough to handle it’ after the dressing room and all of the problems in there. I do not think the gaffer has taken him off because of the way he was playing – he just wanted to change things.’ West Ham have won one in seven and could drop into the bottom three if they lose at Liverpool, where they haven’t won since 1963, on Saturday. They will be without midfielder Ravel Morrison, who serves a one-match ban, even though referee Lee Mason gave Morrison a yellow card rather than a red for shoving Palace’s Joel Ward in the face after the final whistle at Selhurst Park. It was Morrison’s fifth booking of the season, which triggered a ban, but Noble insisted: ‘He has not been any trouble all season. He lost the game and is frustrated – we all are.’

Ex-Blade Warnock in Owls frame SHEffiELD Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric has confirmed Neil Warnock is on a five-man shortlist to replace Dave Jones as the club’s manager. Warnock, 65, was derided by Owls fans during an eight-year spell as Sheffield United manager, but Mandaric insisted whoever he chose to succeed Jones, sacked on Sunday, would be in the club’s best interests. Jones’ assistant Stuart Gray took
charge of the side for Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over Leicester and has not been ruled out altogether by Mandaric, but is not on the shortlist. ‘Not at this time,’ Mandaric said. ‘Of course, there is no ruling out and there is some possibility if Stuart can take us on a run.’ Asked if Warnock was among the candidates to take over, Mandaric added: ‘Yes he is, but it does not mean that he will be our manager.’

Last month after El Clasico, he was under pressure, but a month later he is playing well and everyone realises what a good player he is. His talent was never in doubt.’

Caroline ryan (pictured) will be competing in the Points race and the Individual Pursuit, while eoin Mullen will compete in the sprint and the Keirin. ryan is currently ranked second in the World in the Women’s Individual Pursuit, and a strong performance this weekend could see her move back into the number one spot, as Australia’s rebecca Wisiak leads by just ten points. Mullen, who is based in the World Cycling Centre in Aigle, is Ireland’s premier sprinter, and will be looking to emulate the 200m national record of 9.965 seconds, that he set last January on this Velodrome. The main aim for riders this weekend is to secure points towards qualifying for the World Championships. The World Cup runs from December 5 to 7.
no fear for Leinster after Aviva’s All Blacks agony
by DAnny HOgAn
SHANE Jennings doesn’t believe Leinster’s Ireland internationals will have any hang-ups about returning to the Aviva Stadium for the second leg of their back-to-back Heineken Cup clashes with Northampton Saints next month. The balance of power in Pool 1 is set to swing one way or the other when the two clubs meet in a repeat of the memorable 2011 Heineken Cup final on December 7 and 14. Franklin’s Gardens will host the first game in Round 3 on Saturday with the return match a week later at the same Aviva Stadium where Ireland agonisingly lost out on a moment of rugby history with their last-play defeat to New Zealand. But despite the bitter disappointment of that 24-22 result, Jennings believes the pain of defeat will be a
motivating factor rather than anything else for not only his teammates who played in the game – Rob and Dave Kearney, Brian O’Driscoll, Gordon D’Arcy, Luke Fitzgerald, Ian Madigan, Cian Healy, Mike Ross, Jack McGrath, Devin Toner, Mike McCarthy, Jamie Heaslip, Sean O’Brien and Kevin McLaughlin – but also every Irish fan who watched the game. ‘There is no doubt everyone feels it was an opportunity missed against the All Blacks, but that will just keep the players hungry for success. There was a lot of pride restored into the Aviva Stadium and the Irish jersey in that game,’ said Jennings. ‘We want to continue in that same vein when we get to play there against Northampton Saints in Round 4 of the Heineken Cup and there won’t be any mental scars on
display when the Leinster internationals return. ‘These back-to-back fixtures will tell us a lot about our strength-indepth and will, once again, define our season. There is definitely another Heineken Cup final in this Leinster side. ‘Qualifying
from our pool is the first stage of the process and we are all aware of just how tough the two games with Northampton are going to be. But if you can reach the quarter-finals, then you are just two wins away from the final – anything can happen. ‘We know we face a massive task this month. We aren’t the best team in the tourna-

ment, but we are there or thereabouts.’ Leinster currently sit on top of Pool 1 with a three-point cushion over the Saints following successive victories against the Ospreys and French champions Castres Olympique. But Jennings and his colleagues know only too well how quickly things can change in December. Last season, ASM Clermont Auvergne did the double over the then reigning champions and brought to an end their remarkable run of 17 Heineken Cup games without defeat. Clermont’s two successes set them on their way to a first Heineken Cup final while Leinster had to be content with qualification for the Amlin Challenge Cup for the first time.
