Justice, Bieber THE law caught up with pop brat Justin Bieber yesterday when he was hauled into court accused of drag racing and drink-driving. The 19-year-old, who has had a string of scrapes with the authorities but never been prosecuted before, was caught doing 96km/h in a rented Lamborghini in a residential neighbourhood of Miami. He was suspected of racing in a blocked-off street against r’n’b singer Khalil Sharieff, who was at the wheel of a red Ferrari. Bieber, who was said to have drunk beer as well as taking marijuana and prescription drugs, was accused of resisting arrest after he repeatedly swore at the officer

who pulled him over. His driving licence was also out of date. The teenager was seen grinning in police mugshots but looked fidgety when he appeared by video link in court and reportedly broke down in tears when he returned to his cell after the hearing. Later, after being released on bail, he emerged wearing a black hoodie and sunglasses, waving to waiting cameramen. The Baby singer has been in Florida for the past few days, and hours before his arrest was pictured shirtless in a nightclub. He posted photos on Twitter of

The officer said Bieber smelt of alcohol, his eyes were bloodshot and he had ‘a stupor look’ on his face. Police said he failed a sobriety test and ranted: ‘Why the f*** are you doing this?’ Bieber, who shot to global fame after being spotted on YouTube, has had a string of run-ins with the law, including claims of vandalism in Brazil and drugs being found at his California home.

More than 200 senior Garda officers ‘inappropriately, and in most cases corruptly’ wiped penalty points from driving licences, new evidence handed to a Dáil watchdog claims. In fresh allegations yesterday, a whistleblower from within the force – a sergeant with 30 years’ experience – also claims his life has been destroyed by the controversy. ‘Having been treated the way I was for reporting the above, I don’t think that I would do it again,’ he wrote to the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee

Bieber’s foul-mouthed tirade to police as he is pulled over for alleged drink-driving

What the **** is this about? The model passenger in singer’s sports car

Court: Bieber appears in front of Judge Joseph Farina by video link by nicOLE LE MARiE JUSTIN BIEBER told police ‘I ain’t got no f****** weapons’ when he was pulled over for allegedly drinkdriving and drag racing. The 19-year-old had ‘alcohol on his breath’ and had been smoking marijuana, according to officers who arrested him in Miami Beach in Florida. A police report said that was not the only use of foul language by the singer, who also faces a charge of resisting arrest. When Bieber was flagged down, he said: ‘Why did you stop me?’ Then when he was asked to get out of the car, he asked: ‘Why the f*** are you doing this?’ After the singer eventually stepped outside the vehicle, police said he kept ‘going into his pants pockets’. They then asked him to put his hands on the car for a ‘cursory pat down for weapons’, at which point Bieber wanted to know: ‘Why the f*** did you stop me?’ When again asked to put his hands on the car, the singer insisted: ‘I ain’t got no f****** weapons – why do you have to search me? What the f*** is this all about?’ Bieber was then told repeatedly to take his hands off the car. When offic-

Bieber’s arrest comes on the back of months of trouble with his fans and continuing run-ins with the law. In November last year, police investigated him for spraying graffiti on a

hotel wall in Rio de Janeiro. Photographers who attended the incident claimed they were attacked by members of his entourage. Detectives searched Bieber’s California home recently over claims that he had damaged a neighbour’s property and an aide was arrested on suspicion of drug possession. Last month, the Canadian dismayed fans when he announced that he was retiring – only to explain it away as a ‘joke’ shortly afterwards.

BEFORE his arrest, Justin Bieber posted pictures of himself cruising with a model. The pop star tweeted a picture of Chantel Jeffries behind the wheel of the Lamborghini he was stopped in hours later. The caption read: ‘@chanteljeffries taking me for a ride in the lambo.’ But the singer deleted the post before his arrest. Jeffries randomly tweeted: ‘Something about the shock factor’ and went silent. She has dated P Diddy’s son Justin Combs, American footballer DeSean Jackson and Bieber’s friend Lil Twist. According to the 21-year-old’s Twitter biography, she is a ‘student, model, eyebrow connoisseur, animal lover, and deep thinker’. Jeffries, from Jacksonville, North Carolina, has had run-ins with the law. These include an allegation of assault with a deadly weapon, which was dropped in 2011.

The price of property in Dublin soared by 15.7 per cent last year, official figures have revealed. The market in the capital was up 0.3 per cent in December, while the price for an apartment went up 20.8 per cent over the 12 months. Confirming the gulf in the twotier market, the Central Statistics Office reported that outside the capital the market increased 0.1 per cent last month, but was down 0.4 per cent in the year. The Property Price Register report backs up figures showing a resurgent market in Dublin from estate agents and websites such as daft.ie, which said it had recorded an increase of 11 per cent in Dublin last year. The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland also cited similar figures to the CSO, but rating agency S&P warned the market bounce will slow to two per cent nationally in 2015 amid persistent mortgage arrears. Despite the big jump in Dublin apartment prices, the CSO warned its figures were based on very low sales volumes.

Private school boys broke man’s leg in mass street brawl TWO rugby players from a prestigious private school will be sentenced next week for their involvement in a mass brawl which left a youth with a broken leg. Scott Flood-Wiley, 21, of Adelaide Street, Dún Laoghaire, and Evan Lewis, 22, of Coppinger Close, Stillorgan, were out celebrating their school, Clongowes Wood College, winning the Leinster Schools Cup when they took part in a fight involving around 20 young men. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard gardaí were later able to identify the youths by going through the Clongowes yearbook and finding their pictures.

by cOnOR gALLAgHER Flood-Wiley and Lewis pleaded guilty to affray on Lower Rathmines Road on March 20, 2011. The court heard a large number of current and former Clongowes students were in Tramco nightclub in Rathmines celebrating the school’s win in the rugby competition. Another group of youths including Graham Bennett and Ryan Hatfield were in the same club. Mr Hatfield was involved in a verbal row with some Clongowes students in the smoking area before his group left and went to a chipper. They again ran into the students,

who began shouting abuse at them. Mr Hatfield’s group walked on until he ‘felt a dig in his right ear’. A fight then broke out between the two groups during which Mr Bennett suffered a broken leg. Flood-Wiley, a ‘decorated and honoured’ rugby player, according to his counsel, has three previous convictions for theft, drug possession and a road traffic matter. Lewis, who now has a degree from UCD, has not been in trouble with the gardaí aside from this incident. Judge Carmel Stewart said she wanted time to consider the matter and remanded both men on bail until next week.

‘Possible breach of data protection laws’ from Page 1 Auditor General and internally by Assistant Commissioner John O’Mahony. Later challenged by Sinn Féin TD Mary Lou McDonald, the Commissioner insisted he stood over his remarks. ‘[Disgusting] is a strong term, it’s my view’.

The Garda chief said he has been advised both he and the whistleblower could be guilty of breaching data protection laws. he can’t have thousands of officers investigating each other and making complaints outside internal processes, the commissioner added. ‘There is a

difference between exposing wrongdoing and leaking large volumes of information,’ he said. But PAC chairman John McGuinness said the committee had taken its own legal advice, and was assured the evidence – now redacted – was compliant with the Data Protection Act.

Mother-of-three Comrie Cullen (pictured), 39, was discovered with severe trauma wounds to her upper body at an isolated angler’s club on Wednesday and the man is under guard in hospital. New South Wales Superintendent Gregory Antonjuk said the suspect, 50, was found leaving a swampy mangrove area nearby with significant injuries to his arms and upper torso. ‘We have the understanding that they were married for a period of 15-16 years, and as of late last year, around October, the couple became estranged and there was some domestic incidents related to that reported to police,’ he added. The Police Service of Northern Ireland issued a statement on behalf of Ms Cullen’s Bangor, Co Down family. ‘Our family is devastated by Comrie’s tragic death and we would ask for no media intrusion at this time,’ they said.

You’ve collaborated with guitarist Dennis Cahill for more than two decades. How did the pair of you come to join The Gloaming? Iarla Ó Lionáird

and myself, who’d been friends for several years, got chatting in New York about finally doing something together. I’d been jamming at the time with pianist Thomas Bartlett so we decided to ask him on board. Dennis was very keen and when I realised we’d need another fiddler, I asked Caoimhín O’Raghallaigh on board.

The aim of the collaboration was to meld traditional music with something free-flowing and contemporary. How improvisational was the recording process? Very. The whole idea

It’s a full and complete language and I like the idea of its being in the world, intermixing with all the other languages out there.

In the US, reviewers have likened your talent to that of Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davies. How do you remain grounded? It’s nice of course but

it’s also hyperbole. Reviews like that are great for my career but the beginning of real success is the acceptance of the limitations of what you do. Because I understand my own limitations, which are significant and many, I don’t go on stage and share them. So in that sense, you have to take accolades with a pinch of salt.

‘Cool’ Mac reaches its 30th birthday THIRTY years ago today a young man in a suit and bow tie stood on a stage in the US, reached into his bag and pulled out something that would change the world. Apple boss Steve Jobs’ all-in-one computer, the Macintosh, had 128 kilobytes of memory, a floppy disk drive, and a screen that would not have full colour until years later. However, its arrival brought a computer that was generally affordable and, more importantly, almost anyone could operate. Revealed on January 24, 1983, and soon referred to as the ‘Mac’, it was introduced with a TV advert modelled on George Orwell’s futuristic novel, 1984, during the Superbowl.

by SHARON MARRIS Karen Haslam, editor of Macworld.co.uk, said one of the reasons it created a storm was because it was the first computer to offer a user-friendly interaction. Items on the screen could be dragged and dropped into familiar objects, such as the waste paper basket. Ms Haslem added: ‘The original 128kb Macintosh wasn’t the only Mac to cause a revolution. ‘The iMac when it was introduced in 1998 – the all-in-one with the translucent blue plastic shell – caused shockwaves in the industry and became a design icon.

‘Today Mac sales are still on the increase, while in the PC world sales are in the decline. This is partly due to the success of the iPhone and the Apple Stores.’ Windows 7 is the dominant operating system, with 49 per cent usage, according to GlobalWebIndex. However, Mac OS users have increased from two per cent in 2010 to four per cent in 2013. Early Apple employee Randy Wigginton said the Macintosh was a ‘quantum leap forward’. He added: ‘We didn’t invent everything but we did make everything very accessible and smooth. It was the first computer people would play with and say: “That’s cool”.’

Half of daters will Stethoscopes might meet online by 2034 not be hear for long THE days of eyes meeting across a crowded bar, a chance encounter at the bus stop and the cheesy chatup line are over. Online dating is taking over as more than half of couples are expected to meet their partner over the internet within 20 years, a study suggests. That figure is expected to rise to about seven in ten by 2040. The boom in online matchmaking comes with the growth in devices such as tablets and smartphones. ‘In the decades to come, online dating will not only be an efficient way to meet a partner, but will be by far and away the most common way that couples meet and initially communicate,’ said Romain Bertrand, of dating site eHarmony, which carried out the research. There has been a big rise in numbers using the site on a smartphone or tablet device – now about half of all members, Mr Bertrand added.

IT’S been a staple of the hospital ward for more than 200 years, but doctors could soon be hanging up their stethoscopes for good as technology moves towards hand-held scanners – similar to the ‘tricorders’ seen in sci-fi classic Star Trek. Technological advances have led to a rise in popularity for mobile devices. These have gradually become smaller to the point of being hand-held, more accurate and cheaper. Prof Jagat Narula, editor of the journal Global Heart, said that although several manufacturers offered such machines, their price would be a deterrant for many doctors.

Love blooms as Swift has mercy on Lorde

Singer-songwriter Lorde has struck up an unlikely friendship with Taylor Swift, despite insulting her for being too ‘flawless’. The 17-year-old says she started texting Swift after the 24-year-old sent her a bunch of roses when her debut single, Royals, hit No.1. The New Zealander said she

was ‘floored’ by the gesture. ‘She was like, “It’s fine. If all you’ve done is call someone perfect, it’s not that bad”.’ Despite her brash exterior, Lorde admits she has insecurities. ‘I get paralysingly nervous a lot of times, so I tried bravado,’ she told Rolling Stone magazine.

aty Perry may want to bolster her security arrangements at the Grammy awards – because youth singer Foxes will be on a mission to ‘hunt her down’. the British star revealed she hopes to enlist Sam Smith – of fellow Grammy nominees Disclosure – to track her heroine to her den. ‘I really want to meet Katy Perry. I think that would just be amazing. I think I will freak out,’ the doeeyed beauty told me as she arrived at Heathrow to jet to La for the awards on Sunday. ‘I don’t want to be an idiot around her and cry or something – but Katy is the one I will be heading for.’ Foxes can dream of meeting her idol at the Grammys because her top ten Billboard hit Clarity – a collaboration with producer Zedd – is up for best dance recording. and the 24-year-old said she couldn’t wait to touch down stateside along with her rival British nominees, Duke Dumont, aMe, Calvin Harris and Florence Welch. ‘We will be like Brits abroad. It should be fun. We’ll be taking over,’ she said – but promised not

Modest Foxes insisted she hadn’t ‘even thought’ about winning the dance track Grammy. But the prospect of victory must have briefly crossed her mind because she’s already worried about going up to collect the gong. ‘I think I’ll forget how to walk and when I have to stand up it will be awkward,’ the Southampton lass confessed. Besides Perry, Foxes said she hopes to meet Daft Punk, who are also up for an award. that could be tricky, however, because – like most of us – she has no clue what the helmet-wearing duo look like. ‘they could be anyone – it’s such a good trick,’ she said. ‘they’re huge but you have no idea. I could be sat next to them right now – in a Wetherspoons at Heathrow airport!’ Foxes’ new single, Let Go For tonight, will be released on February 23.

Ant and Dec might be kings of the small screen after scooping three UK National Television Awards but they are not immune from being brought back down to earth by their mothers. The duo, who won best entertainment presenters for the 13th year running, say their families never allow them to get carried away with their fame. ‘I think we’ve both been given a dressing down for being late over the years,’ Anthony McPartlin, 38, told Guilty Pleasures backstage at the bash. ‘When in this business you would

say, “I’m going to be 20 minutes late”, they will say, “You shouldn’t be – it’s a family lunch, so we’re not having that!”. And you get a little slap on the wrist and learn very early on that can’t happen.’ The Geordie boys were astonished to get a special award – with the approval of Prince Charles – for their 25 years of service to television. ‘It’s just hard to get your head around, Declan Donnelly, also 38, told us. ‘We’re not going to retire just yet. Glee is now in its fifth season and has launched the careers of Lea Michele, Dianna Agron and the late Cory Monteith.

Starkers Sinitta gets Jump-y in the pool... by sEAMus Duff Sinitta was left blushing when she was forced to strip naked in a bizarre bonding experiment with fellow contestants on The Jump. The singer and her co-stars were told swimwear was banned when they turned up at a spa in Austria. So there were lots of sizing up to do as the 45-year-old got down to business for the Channel 4 show with the likes of ex-Towie star Amy Childs, Olympic legend Sir Steve Redgrave and 5ive singer Ritchie Neville. ‘We were in a spa in Tyrol where it was compulsory to be nude in the pools and the saunas,’ she told me in an exclusive chat. ‘They considered it unhygienic to bring bathing wear into those areas. ‘I did blush but it was not obvious. And we all made really good eye contact. Really intense stares into the eyes – even if it was the most mundane conversation,’ she giggled. After overcoming the embarrass-

Spa partners: Sinitta had to strip ment, the stars of the new winter sport-themed reality competition found their naked encounters liberating.

‘There has been lots of flashing and kit off in the changing rooms,’ Sinitta revealed but swiftly emphasised: ‘We look at each other’s bruises, not our privates.’ Normally a regular on the beaches of the Bahamas each winter, the star said she was happy to cut short her usual holiday to begin training in Innsbruck in early January. ‘I did the beach holiday but then missed the boat part as I came here. But I got the best of both worlds – a bit of sun and a bit of snow. But you could wear a bikini here if you’re in the right spot,’ she said. In fact, the singer promises to strip off on the slopes if she survives the various sporting challenges on the show to make it to the final. ‘If by some miracle I make it to the final or if everyone else wipes out or does a wrong turn and I end up in the finals, I will do the jump in my bikini like a snow bunny,’ she laughed. The Jump starts this Sunday on Channel 4 at 8pm.

Kylie’s a drip-drop artist After a week of teasing fans by dropping hints on social media, Kylie Minogue has finally unveiled her new album artwork and title. Kiss Me Once will be her 12th studio album and the first since she signed a management deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation – reportedly in an effort to win the US acclaim that’s

always eluded her. The 45-year-old poses seductively on the cover with her lips pressed against a rain-soaked window pane... perhaps in a silent plea to America to open the window and let her in. First single Into The Blue is out on March 9 and the full album will follow soon after.

So you think the internet is just a law unto itself?

When you trawl the internet, you might think you are simply surfing without adhering to any kind of rules. But, as ETAN SMALLMAN discovers, there are a host of unwritten online laws of behaviour out there ready to catch us out when we are particularly stupid.

T

mandment of the internet: ‘As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.’ In other words, if any debate goes on for more than a few comments, someone will draw a spurious – and in Godwin’s view, highly offensive – parallel to Nazism. The law’s success is seen by the fact it is now used offline as much as on. You’ll find no shortage of flippant comments that you can apply the law to – from those who call feminists ‘feminazis’ to the council apparatchik referred to as a ‘jumped-up little Hitler’. Godwin told Metro Herald: ‘In the 1980s, I’d been reading a bunch of literature about the Holocaust, notably Primo Levi’s books, and it seemed to me that glib comparisons to Nazis, Hitler or the Holocaust had the effect of trivialising what was a singular historical event. ‘So it seemed wrong for people on the then nascent but quickly growing

HE world wide web is often regarded as the ‘world’s Wild West’ – a digital freefor-all, uninhibited by law, order and, frequently, human decency. But there are regulations governing our behaviour online and – knowingly or not – most of us simply can’t help but conform to them. For instance, Poe’s Law – proposed by Nathan Poe in 2005 – states: ‘Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humour, it is impossible to create a parody of fundamentalism that someone won’t mistake for the real thing.’ There is also Danth’s Law – named after a user of the RPG.net forums called Danth in 2005 – that decrees: ‘If you have to insist you’ve won an internet argument, you’ve probably lost badly.’ And there is Pommer’s Law, which was formulated by Rob Pommer in 2007. It states: ‘A person’s mind can be changed by reading information on the internet. The nature of this change will be from having no opinion to having a wrong opinion.’ Mike Godwin, The undisputed king of creator of Godwin’s Law the internet aphorism is Mike Godwin, a US law‘I think The Law of Exclamation yer and author. Godwin’s has some substance to it: “The Law, which was coined more exclamation points used back in 1990, has almost in an email (or other posting), become the first comthe more likely it is a complete lie”. Although I think what Terry Pratchett says is closer to the truth, that the more exclamation marks someone uses the more likely they are to be mentally unbalanced.’

The experts' favourites internet laws:

internet to use Hitler and Nazis as their go-to comparisons. I set out to try to figure out a clever, self-replicating way to make people more self-conscious about it. ‘And it occurred to me that people hate being told that they’re predictable, or mechanical, or lack freedom of choice – so I framed Godwin’s Law as a kind of mock law of physics. ‘I hoped people might begin to see how they had slipped unreflectively into rhetorical excess – and would be embarrassed about having done so.’

S

oMETIMES you can spot two laws for the price of one. Helen Lewis, deputy editor of the New Statesman, is the creator of Lewis’s Law, the 2012 dictum that ‘the comments on any article about feminism justify feminism’. But search for the original tweet in which Lewis codified her regulation and you’ll observe a message that

Helen Lewis,

creator of Lewis’s Law ‘As a former sub-editor, my favourite internet law is Muphry’s Law: “If you write anything ything criticising editing or proofreading, there will be a fault of some kind in what you have written.” Essentially, the rule is: don’t be a smart arse.’

takes issue with her position – and almost looks as if it is written to prove Godwin’s point. ‘Trite tripe’, responded @DopeyJim. ‘Do comments on any article about Nazism justify Nazism?’ Lewis coined her adage because it seemed ‘every time I read a piece about feminism, in the comments underneath, there would be someone calling the author hysterical or a bitch’. She tweeted her theory to technology journalist Alice Marwick – who wrote about it in Wired magazine. Lewis posted the article on her Tumblr page and it was reblogged more than 3,000 times. The law then received its own Wikipedia entry and has been applied to articles on everything from gay rights to anti-racism campaigns. Lewis said: ‘I think the internet is a fascinating opportunity for anyone interested in human behaviour, because you can see people acting in such huge crowds, and so quickly. It

Tom Chatfield, technology theorist and author of Netymology

‘Perhaps the most useful advice you can offer anyone online is the four letters DFTT - Don't Feed The Trolls. If someone is being deliberately provocative, don't give them the satisfaction of your attention. Another kind of contender for universal truth is Rule 34 – “if it exists, there is porn of it”.’

really gives the lie to the idea that we’re all special snowflakes. ‘If you ever make a joke about a TV programme on Twitter, it’s a sobering experience to do a search and see just how many people made the same joke as you. I think that’s why there are so many internet laws – because we can see patterns of behaviour so transparently online, and want to make sense of them.’ Lewis is a one-adage wonder: ‘I tried coming up with another law, but it was rubbish and I don’t remember it. Difficult second law syndrome.’ Godwin has tried to add another maxim but ‘quite often I find that someone has thought of it before me’. There are other lacklustre laws showing how tricky it is to come up with one that strikes a chord. DeMyer’s Second Law – named after Ken DeMyer, who has four in total – doesn’t quite reach Godwin levels of acuity: ‘Anyone who posts an argument on the internet which is largely quotations can be safely ignored, and is deemed to have lost the argument before it has begun.’ Cohen’s Law, defined by Brian Cohen in 2007, is unlikely to gain much traction: ‘Whoever resorts to the argument that “whoever resorts to the argument that… …has automatically lost the debate” has automatically lost the debate.’ And then, last but not least, there is Smallman’s Ben Hammersley, Law: ‘The more internet internet technologist laws that are created, the more likely they are to be ‘I’m a fan of Betteridge’s Law meaningless stabs (Any headline which ends in a at immortality.’ question mark can be You read it here answered ed by the word “no”) first.

and Sturgeon’s Law (“99 per cent of everything is crap”). If I had to come up with my own, I would go with: “The internet-connected fridge is never a cool idea.”’

Gang rape ‘ordered by elders of village’ VILLAGE elders in India ordered the gang rape of a young woman who fell in love with a man from a different community, it has emerged. The council authorised the attack after the victim’s family was unable to pay the €334 fine it had imposed. A total of 13 men were arrested following the assault, which left the woman, 20, in a serious condition. The victim is a member of the Santhal tribe in Subalpur, West Bengal. The man is non-tribal and

from a village in Birbhum district. Village councils are not legally binding in India but often hold huge power over communities. They decide on social norms and how women should dress and marry. Those who flout the councils’ decisions risk being ostracised. ‘The councils are dead set against giving basic human rights to women,’ said Annie Raja of the National

Federation of Indian Women. ‘The West Bengal government should take stringent action against them.’ In 2010, a village council in Birbhum ordered a woman to be paraded naked after she fell in love with a man from a different caste. The Indian government tightened laws on sexual violence after the gang rape and murder of a woman on a Delhi bus in 2012, but inequality and violence against females is entrenched in Indian society.

Uniform cams to curb killings

Rounded up: The suspects Picture: aP

Some police units in Jamaica will soon be wearing video cameras on their uniforms to curb high rates of killings by officers, improve transparency and head off unfair claims of wrongdoing. Security minister Peter Bunting says select units of the Jamaica Constabulary Force will start wearing the cameras this year. The announcement comes as an independent commission launches an inquiry into alleged homicides by police in Clarendon parish. Last year, 258 civilians – 39 more than in 2012 – were killed by security forces on the island with a population of 2.7 million.

Cannibal rat ghost ship! A GHOST ship supposedly crewed by cannibal rats could be heading to our shores, experts fear. The Lyubov Orlova cruise ship has been adrift in the Atlantic for 12 months. Coastguards believe the floating derelict, cut loose near Canada in 2013, could be driven towards Ireland following recent storms. Irish coastguard chief Chris Reynolds believes the vessel, spotted 1,300 nautical miles off Ireland last year, is likely to be still afloat. ‘It takes a lot to sink a vessel as big as that,’ he said, ominously adding: ‘We must stay vigilant.’

Could this be the inspiration for the tale of Noah’s ark? IT IS the size of a mobile phone and is covered in squiggles. But this chipped clay contains details of an ancient story about a flood thought to have inspired the tale of Noah’s Ark. The tablet contains 60 lines carved in the ancient script of cuneiform and is 4,000 years old. The text includes aspects of the legend of a great flood hundreds of years before the Book of Genesis was written. It includes descriptions of a round vessel built to withstand the deluge and a line about animals boarding ‘two by two’. The findings were unveiled at the British Museum in London by Dr Irving Finkel. Ancient: The tablet of clay

Peace talks on Syria in balance as Iran calls for free elections by NICOLE LE MARIE PEACE talks aimed at ending the bloodshed in Syria were put on hold yesterday, as negotiators worked behind the scenes to find common ground between rebels and the government. The first direct discussions since the rebellion began in 2011 would be scrapped if the bitter enemies were unwilling to sit down together, UN mediator Lakhdar Brahimi admitted. But he added there were signs that the two sides – fighting a war that has claimed at least 130,000 lives – might reach agreement on humanitarian aid, ceasefires and prisoner exchanges. Burhan Ghalyoun, of the Westernbacked Syrian National Coalition, said he was willing to talk – but feared little would be achieved by negotiating with president Bashar al-Assad’s regime. ‘We don’t have any illusions, all they have done so far is ignore reality, reject everything and deceive,’ he said. As Mr Brahimi tried to salvage the summit after angry podium speeches from both sides on Wednesday, Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani called for free elections to be held in Syria. The reformist – speaking yesterday at the World Economic Forum – promised

Talks: UN mediator Lakhdar Brahimi to respect the result of a poll even if it meant the end of the government, whose army is being helped by Iranian troops. The influence of such a powerful ally might help to persuade the Syrian regime to agree to elections. But the opposition is unlikely to agree unless an interim government is formed and Mr Assad removed. Even getting the two sides in the same room on Wednesday was an achievement, according to UN officials at the summit in Montreux, Switzerland.

Six of Burns’ most memorable songs are performed by Irish and Scottish artists in this documentary which charts his short life (he died at 37) from his early years living in poverty and the influence of his mother on his writing and music, through to his romance with ‘Highland Mary’ and his latter years as an unsuccessful farmer.

As the genuine US Navy planes streak across the sky and the dogfights commence, you can forgive the many on-land dramatic flaws and risible dialogue. Working with a cat was a pain

Inside Llewyn Davis hasn’t blown away the Oscar judges but the Coen brothers aren’t too worried, writes James Mottram

J

oel and ethan Coen must be secretly relieved. last week’s oscar nominations saw their latest movie, Inside llewyn Davis, overlooked – just two nods in technical categories. If that’s a surprise – it’s been earmarked for Baftas, Golden Globes and won the Grand Prix prize in Cannes – it does let the brothers off the hook. They’re not big on all the ‘flesh-pressing’ that an oscar campaign requires, attending endlessly dull events. ‘I think it’s all become a little crazy,’ grunts Joel. ‘everyone has a glazed look.’ While they are Academy favourites (13 nominations and four wins, including best picture for 2007’s No Country For old Men), you get the impression that even now, the Coens are more comfortable on the fringes of Hollywood. Despite flirting with the mainstream with remakes of The ladykillers and True Grit, their best work – from Barton Fink to The Big lebowski – is their most idiosyncratic. ‘We like to think the rest of the world has come round to our point of view,’ says Joel, ‘though that may be a little naive.’ Sitting in a gloomy Soho hotel, Joel, 59, is the older of the two, bearded, bespectacled and today sporting a crumpled maroon jacket. ethan, 56, is no smarter: tattered jeans and a grey flannel shirt. They look like perpetual students. But they can be tricky interviewees: evasive, prone to private jokes. As actor oscar Isaac puts it: ‘It does feel like it’s one brain in two places at the same time.’ Set in 1961, around the blossoming folk music scene in New York’s Greenwich Village, Inside

Focused: Joel and Ethan Coen on set for Inside Llewyn Davis and inset: Justin Timberlake and Adam Driver recording llewyn Davis sees Isaac play llewyn, a singer/songwriter on the slide. or as ethan puts it: ‘A melancholic folk singer who doesn’t succeed and doesn’t really get anywhere.’ He bursts out laughing. ‘There’s not a strong pitch for this one.’ Maybe not but it’s still classic Coen – a brilliantly realised portrait of male failure to rival what they managed in The Man Who Wasn’t There and A Serious Man. loosely based on the memoirs of folk musician Dave Van Ronk, it began after Joel suggested they start a movie with Van Ronk getting beaten up outside iconic venue Gerde’s Folk City – an ‘absurd’ notion, says ethan, that got the brothers chuckling. But while there’s humour – not least in co-star Justin Timberlake’s goatee beard – Joel is quick to assure they are folk fans. ‘The music is something we have a genuine fondness and respect for,’ he says. ‘Not to say there aren’t funny things about folk music. There are plenty’ While A Serious Man explored their Jewish childhood in Minnesota, Inside llewyn Davis touches on the music that formed them. ‘The actual period of this movie, 1961, was when we were small kids and weren’t listening to music,’ says ethan. ‘That came later, when Bob Dylan was a big presence for everyone. He was a big deal.’ Timberlake is in the cast alongside indemand actress Carey Mulligan, who plays llewyn’s foul-mouthed on-off lover (‘It’s fun to see Carey swear,’ notes ethan). But the biggest star might be the cat llewyn ends up looking after. Working with a moggy ‘was a pain in the ass’, sighs Joel. ‘We had multiple cats that would act in specific ways. So we had a docile cat, an active cat, a running cat. You can’t train them. It was pointed out to us by

the trainer that dogs want to please you but cats only want to please themselves.’

s

oMeHoW that feels like an apt description of the Coens, who have done it their own way since their 1984 debut, Blood Simple. While they’ve worked on scripts for other directors – including Angelina Jolie’s upcoming Unbroken – their 16 films as co-directors/ writers have always been their own. ‘By doing our own material, it’s been easier for us to exercise creative control,’ says Joel. ‘It would have been harder had we been taking material from other people.’ The pair also have consistency in their private lives. ethan has been married to film editor Tricia Cooke since 1990, while Joel has been wed even longer – he married actress Frances McDormand shortly after working with her in Blood Simple. The couple last collaborated on 2008’s Burn After Reading. Is she always excited to get a new role from them? ‘She’s invariably underwhelmed,’ Joel quips. Up next is a TV series of Fargo, their 1996 thriller, with the Coens on executive producer duty. And there’s a ‘good chance’ the long-gestating Hail Caesar will be their next film. Starring George Clooney as a 1920s matinee idol, it’ll be the third part of their so-called ‘numbskull’ trilogy, after the Clooney-starring o Brother, Where Art Thou? and Intolerable Cruelty. This is no reflection on their star, though. ‘George is not an idiot,’ smiles Joel. ‘It takes a very, very smart actor to play a dumb person.’

Inside Llewyn Davis is in cinemas today. Review opposite.

Erol Alkan & Daniel Avery

The pairing of Erol Alkan and Daniel Avery seems to make little sense – the former was famously associated with electro clash a decade ago and the latter is one of the UK’s most impressive proponents of new school house. Scratch beneath the surface, however, and the connections become clearer. Avery released his debut album on Phantasy Sound last year – the label Alkan runs. It’s one of the most intriguing double headline nights to take place in Dublin for some time. Tomorrow, Hidden Agenda, The Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar D2, 11pm, €15.

Since re-locating to Berlin, Sydenham’s productions have started to reflect the German city’s gritty sounds – expect to hear a perfectly-weighted balance at Twisted Pepper. Tomorrow, Subject /Pogo, The Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey Street D1, 11pm, €10 to €13.

Eats Everything

It took UK producer Dan Pearce, aka Eats Everything, a long time to receive recognition outside of his native Bristol. Pearce’s breakthrough came with a record on Claude Von Stroke’s Dirtybird label in 2011, and in 2013 he enjoyed a banner year with good-time grooves. Tonight, The Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey Street D1, 10pm, €15.

under a beard that could’ve been knitted by Bob Dylan’s granny). Llewyn’s life is going nowhere. But can a road trip with an obese, junkie jazz man (John goodman) wrench Llewyn out of his slump? an anti-heroic male odyssey to nowhere, wherein Llewyn repeatedly chases a cat called ulysses and attempts, but never quite manages, to get to sea, this is shot with exquisite, foggy beauty by Oscarnominated cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel. the direction is pitch-perfect; the characters unique and eccentric yet fully realised and the script, woven with absurdist comedy, a marvel. So what’s with the lack of awards? Possibly it was just too low-key, delectably melancholic or just too damn tricky to spell/pronounce to appeal to academy voters – who, let’s not forget, once gave Best Picture to Chicago. time, however, will give the Coens the last laugh.

The go-to guy if you need a younger incarnation of a now craggy icon, Chris Pine here moves on from Captain Kirk to Jack Ryan, the CIA analyst previously portrayed by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. In this latest action reboot, based on Tom Clancy’s bestsellers, Ryan is an economics whizz-kid and former US marine who’s just getting started in the spy game. But if our hero is fresher-faced than he used to be, the same can’t be said of his film. The key Moscow set pieces had twice the flair when they were done by Bond, Bourne and Mission: Impossible. And the key characters, from Kevin Costner’s stolid CIA handler to Keira Knightley’s nagging girlfriend to director Kenneth Branagh’s Russian oligarch, don’t have three dimensions between them. Li-Z

This display of thespian fireworks, adapted by Tracy Letts from his Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, revolves around a family in meltdown on the sweltering Oklahoma Plains. No one is singing Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’ here, that’s for sure. Meryl Streep is sharp-tongued, pillpopping matriarch Violet, who says whatever she thinks, and it ain’t pretty. When her husband (Sam Shepard) disappears, Violet’s daughters dutifully assemble: resentful eldest, Barbara (Oscar-nominated Julia Roberts) with uneasy husband (Ewan McGregor) and precocious daughter (Abigail Breslin); dizzy Karen (Juliette Lewis) with her dodgy fiancé (Dermot Mulroney), and secretive, stay-at-home spinster, Ivy (Julianne Nicholson). sOn Lux What would a hip-hop Sufjan Stevens sound like? For an answer to a question you probably haven’t laid awake wondering about, may we point you in the direction of Ryan Lott, aka New York experimentalist Son Lux. Nominally, a rapper, in reality Lux is a hard-core omnivore, sprinkling his aggressively eclectic work with touches of classical music, folk and dubstep. Far from the unruly mash-up it reads on paper, his compositions are gently couched and often haunting: 2013’s Lanterns sounded, in a very positive sense, like a Philip Glass opera reworked by a Brooklyn arts collective – the weirdness was refreshing but not to the point where it overshadowed the tunes. Clearly we’re alone in discerning a

Apart from the Oscar-nominated Streep, Benedict Cumberbatch, Margo Martindale and Chris Cooper also snatch great moments in the non-stop melodrama of mean, while director John Wells stands back and lets them rip. similarity with Stevens, the star-crossed folkie who, likewise, thinks skewed music has a particular baked-in beauty. Last year, the two joined forces (together with Chicago rhymer Serengeti) on the s/s/s project. Their fruits of their labours will shortly be released on an album entitled Sisyphus. All of this may paint Lott as the ultimate in pop obscurities. In fact, his star is slowly rising: he scored the off-kilter Bruce Willis vehicle Looper and was commissioned by American Public Radio to write and record an entire LP in a month – a feat he pulled off with aplomb with help from members of Midlake, The Antlers and My Brightest Diamond.

for one last (let’s pray) punch-up with Sylvester Stallone in this embarrassing ‘Rocky Balboa Vs Raging Bull’ cash cow? The two play former Pittsburgh champs whose careers ended abruptly when Henry ‘Razor’ Sharp (Stallone, now looking like a minced-down version of his prime-era self, crudely reshaped into a human) mysteriously retired from the limelight in the early 1980s. The two remained bitter rivals. After a clip called ‘Two Old Guys Fighting’ (self-explanatory) goes viral on YouTube, a young promoter (Kevin Hart) secures them one last big bucks fight. Predictable ‘oldie’ jokes about mobility scooters, farts and ‘moobs’ abound in a movie that can’t decide if it’s a lowdenominator, wobbly-kneed comedy or a hotdog-for-brains version of The Wrestler. The cast, also including Alan Arkin (the old coach) and Kim Basinger (the love interest) all act like they’re in completely different movies while a monosyllabic Sly just looks like he’d like to be – forever staring soulfully off screen as if desperately trying to hail a cab. If you’re searching for a property, your desire to have the ideal manifestation of your dreams can be strong. Yet, as much as there may be financial barriers to this, be mindful of your emotions.

The retreating Venus blends with Pluto and both oppose Jupiter. This is one of those aspects that can play out very positively. Why? Well, what you can be is more mindful of the things that are really important – the people.

YOUR DUBLIN WEEkEND with daragh reddin

Farce, satire, intrigue – Colleen has it all THE COLLEEN BAWN HHHHH The mere title of Dion Boucicault’s 1860s melodrama is probably enough to scare off contemporary audiences weary of crass Oirish stereotypes. But in Druid Theatre Company’s riotous new production, currently completing the Dublin leg of a nationwide tour, an arch tone and splendid casting ensure outlandish characters and zealous dialogue can be enjoyed for what they are. Eily – the ‘pretty girl’ of the title – is secretly married to Hardress Cregan (Marty Rea), an impoverished aristocrat who faces financial ruin if he can’t dissolve the union and woo the wellheeled, blue-blooded Colleen Rua (Aisling O’Sullivan). Romantic complications become increasingly complex as Cregan’s dutiful servant Danny (Aaron Monaghan, giving good bumpkin) hoodwinks one woman and devises a dastardly plan to dispose of the other. Despite being based on a grisly Clare murder case, the tone – a well-executed drowning scene notwithstanding – remains decidedly giddy throughout. Although director Garry Hynes has fun with the more preposterous facets of Boucicault’s characters, she has also tapped into the text’s considerable power as both a satire of Irish class relations and as an involving farce. Kelly McAuley is suitably doe-eyed and loveable as the innocent of the title, while Rea gives a sympathetic performance as her addled husband (no mean feat given how Cregan holds his wife’s peasant origins in contempt). Marie Mullan (pictured right with McAuley) is superb in two contrasting roles as a steely, uppercrust matriarch and put-upon charwoman, while Rory Nolan’s larger-than-life Myles Na gCopaleen and O’Sullivan’s horsey love interest provide impeccable comic timing. Ireland is staring down the barrel of fines of €25,000 a day for not adopting strict european rules on renewable energy. The Government has been warned that it should have climate change targets in law for achieving a fifth of power from green resources by 2020. Ireland joins austria, Poland and Cyprus in facing severe financial penalties for not transposing the directive last month. european energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger said the final bill for fines would be decided by the Court of Justice of the european Union. ‘It is essential that all the Member States implement the renewable energy legislation. renewables are vital for the security of supply and european economic growth. They are key in mitigating global climate change,’ he said. The european Commission

by ED cARTy has proposed a daily penalty of €25,447 based on what it says is the duration and the gravity of the infringement. The Government was twice threatened with fines after only adopting some aspects of the renewable energy directive including a letter of formal notice in January 2011 and a reasoned opinion in June 2012. The Commission also set out criteria for biofuels and bioliquids which includes that they cannot be produced from areas which are protected or store large amounts of carbons such as forests and bogs. earlier this week, the Commission announced proposals for bigger environmental targets up to 2030, including cutting greenhouse gas emissions across the european Union by 40 per cent on 1990 levels.

business bites n EDITORIAL outsourcing company Realtime Editing and Design (RE&D) will be closing its Dublin office with the loss of 50 jobs. Following a decision by Independent Newspapers, which had outsourced some of its subediting and production functions to RE&D in 2007, not to renew its contract as part of costsaving measures, the company decided to close the Dublin office and move a number of senior executives to its Belfast office. The first phase of redundancies will take place in March and MD Terry Kavanagh said he expected the operation would be fully gone by July.

ONe in every four euro that Irish consumers spend is now done with a Visa card, the company says. Last year €21billion was spent on Visa cards in Ireland, a rise of 83 per cent on the previous year. The main reason for the rise has been attributed to old Laser cards being replaced with Visa debit cards. Visa Ireland manager Conor Langford said it is also due to consumers becoming more comfortable with electronic transactions. At the end of last September, 358,173,000 Visa card transactions had been made in Ireland over a 12-month period, with people using their card 79.5 times on average.

Those who don’t, leave themselves open to attackers who compromise Windows XPbased systems. For all of us uncreative mugs out there who haven’t mastered the fine art of drawing down fat salaries and pensions from charity fundraising, career stagnation is a real worry. This week I’d like to offer some simple pointers to anyone who has gone through a period of up-skilling only to find ‘conversion’ to a tangible result frustratingly difficult. Here’s an overview of your main options. Option 1 is to work towards landing a job in an industry you want using your newfound skills. If you can take this direct route, go for it. Culture of late payment ‘strangling’ small firms

McNally: Payment debate

THE Small Firms Association has said late payments are strangling small firms as the average reparation is taking 62 days. Acting director Avine McNally said the amount of time payments are taking is causing serious problems: ‘Late payment causes serious cash flow problems and requires firms to extend overdraft facilities and consumes a great deal of management time. This in turn affects the ability of the business to compete, be profitable and grow.’

by ANGHARAD WILLIAMS The association released the findings of its late payment survey conducted at the end of 2013. They found that 71 per cent of companies experience late payments on their credit terms. Ten per cent of those questioned use debt collection agents and eight per cent include late payment charges to slow paying customers. Late payment in commercial transactions was amended by an EU Directive in March

2013 and allows companies to automatically charge interest penalties on accounts outstanding beyond 30 days. Many small firms say they are frustrated if they are unable to gain payment through the legislation and have to pursue outstanding debts through the courts. The association want significant efforts to be made to change the late payment culture through the extension of the voluntary 15 day payment period to all Government agencies.

Wenger: Trophy hopes

Manager arsene Wenger feels his current arsenal side are ‘in a moment of a lifetime’ as the Premier League leaders look to stay on course in the Fa Cup with victory over Coventry tonight. The gunners take a break from the title race when they host the League One outfit in the first of the weekend’s televised fourth-round ties. It’s been almost a decade since any of Wenger’s squads last tasted trophy success, but the Frenchman

is confident this generation can deliver on their promise in 2014. ‘We are still in a moment of our lifetime, this team, where we want to gain respect and through our attitude is the best way to gain respect,’ Wenger said. arsenal can’t take anything for granted against the Sky Blues, especially after last season’s fifthround exit at the hands of Blackburn at the emirates. ‘It was the first time in 16 years we lost against lower-

league opposition in the Fa Cup, so it was a great warning,’ he said. ‘at the moment, this is just our next game and we want to win it.’ arsenal will have an extra day to recover ahead of their League trip to Southampton next Tuesday, so Wenger hinted he won’t have to rotate much of his first team. Mata’s ideal candidate to breathe life into United

JUAN MATA has been hailed as the ideal man to turn around Manchester United’s disappointing season. The Spain midfielder is expected to formalise his switch from Chelsea today for a club record £37million. United are desperately in need of a positive spark to revive their campaign, with the Capital One Cup penalty shootout defeat to Sunderland adding to the growing unrest among fans. And former United defender Gary Pallister believes Mata is exactly the kind of player needed to breathe fresh life into David Moyes’ squad. ‘He is a fantastic signing,’ said Pallister. ‘He has great skill, flair and goalscoring ability. Injury to Earls rules him out of 6 Nations

Keith earls will miss ireland’s entire rBs 6 Nations campaign with knee ligament damage that could keep him sidelined for two months. the 26-year-old three-quarter’s luckless injury run continues after he limped out of Munster’s 38-6 heineken Cup victory over edinburgh. earls signed a new two-year irFU contract this week, rejecting strong overtures from aviva Premiership and French clubs. Now he will sit out ireland’s 6 Nations challenge as new head coach Joe schmidt takes control of his first championship. ‘Obviously we’re really disappointed about Keith,’ said schmidt. ‘Keith is a super player and it’s disappointing we will be without him.’ tommy Bowe will also miss a frantic opening to the tournament when ireland entertain scotland and Wales in six days, the Ulster wing still recovering from groin trouble suffered in November. Dave Kearney, Fergus McFadden, luke Fitzgerald and andrew trimble will now compete to start on the wings, while simon Zebo and Craig Gilroy prove fitness in ireland Wolfhounds action at Gloucester tomorrow. Knee problems kept Munster flyer earls out of action for the entire autumn test window. New boss schmidt is clearly keen to usher him into an ireland jersey, but will not now get the chance during the upcoming championship, with ireland starting their campaign against scotland on February 2, but will have his work cut out choosing between the likes of Dave Kearney, andrew trimble and luke Fitzgerald.

Schmidt sweats over Sexton as Scotland game looms In action: Jonny Sexton will play for Racing Metro tonight, and Joe Schmidt is hoping he comes through without injury pIcturE: INpho

irelaND head coach Joe schmidt hopes Jonny sexton comes through racing Metro’s top 14 tussle with toulouse unscathed, after already losing Keith earls to injury. schmidt fears earls could be out for as long as two months, thanks to knee ligament damage suffered in Munster’s heineken Cup clash with edinburgh on sunday. Fly-half sexton will be ireland’s only 6 Nations star in club action this weekend. the bulk of schmidt’s senior players will remain in the national team camp, but Francebased sexton has no such luxury. instead he will turn out at Paris’ stade de France tonight, with his ireland boss crossing fingers on the injury front. France coach Philippe saint-andre can

withhold 23 of his squad from club action this weekend, in a new initiative. ireland are powerless to intervene where sexton is concerned, but schmidt admitted he will be watching carefully, with the February 2 Dublin clash against scotland drawing in. ‘i expected it,’ schmidt said of sexton’s club commitment. ‘racing play toulouse and he is being taken back for that game. he will get back [to ireland’s training camp], hopefully, saturday evening or sunday morning depending on his well-being.’ schmidt was forced to admit ireland are not happy with losing ‘control’ of sexton during the autumn internationals, lamenting the 28-yearold sexton playing 13 games in ten weeks and eventually succumbing to a hamstring complaint.

racing rested sexton for last weekend’s 28-3 heineken Cup hiding at Clermont, but only because they had already bombed out of the competition. the Paris club’s sorry return of one win in the first five rounds of european action meant they could neither qualify for the quarter-finals nor drop into the amlin Challenge Cup last eight. all too aware racing were not doing ireland any favours, schmidt still hopes to benefit. ‘Jonny’s a lot fresher. he didn’t play last weekend down in the swamp at Clermont which i’ve never seen before,’ he said. ‘so he was a lot fresher. i think he’s in really good shape for the six Nations. hopefully, touch wood, there’s no injury in toulouse and he’ll be ready to go for scotland.’
