Dear Justin: Dolly’s advice for Biebs »p17
Somebody think of the children… by tariq tahir
WARRING parents who fail to resolve their arguments are putting their children’s health at risk and could even slow their growth, experts claim. Exposure to family feuds can lead to long-term health problems, as well as headaches, stomach pains and reduced growth. ‘Destructive’ conflict – including sulking, walking away or slamming doors – puts youngsters at greater risk of a range of social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, said relationship charity OnePlusOne. Study co-author Dr Catherine Houlston said: ‘We know conflict is a normal part of family life. It’s not whether you argue, but how you argue that matters most to kids. ‘Research suggests that the impact of being exposed to arguing between their parents can put children’s physical health at risk.’ The study examined the differences between destructive and constructive conflict and their effect on children. It found they reacted better when parents related to each other more positively when quarrelling and when they managed to resolve disputes. ‘Not all arguing has a negative outcome,’ said Dr Houlston. ‘If a child sees his or her parents in conflict, then work things out, they understand it’s possible for difficult situations to be resolved and they feel more secure.’
Netanyahu: ‘let settlers stay on’ ISRAELI leader Benjamin Netanyahu believes all Jewish settlers should have the right to remain in their homes in a future Palestine, one of his officials has revealed. In years of negotiations, it has been assumed any Jewish settlers not inside Israeli territory under a future deal would have to be removed. But Mr Netanyahu considers there is no reason for a Palestinian state to be ‘ethnically cleansed’. However, the novel approach was rejected by Palestinians and settlers.

WOMEN and children can now leave the besieged Syrian city of Homs, it has been agreed at peace talks in Geneva. Two days of talks yielded the tentative agreement yesterday – while the government said president Bashar Assad (pictured) had no intention of giving up ‘the keys to Damascus’. The talks have yet to touch upon the issue of a possible transitional government, while in Syria the war continued, with districts of Homs coming under fire that activists blamed on the government.

That’s hardly lovey-dovey You’re free: Children join the Pope to release the two white doves
Pope’s birds of peace are attacked by ‘satanic’ gull by nicOLE LE MARiE AS PEACE gestures go, this one passed on a wing and a prayer. Children who released two white doves next to Pope Francis were left hoping for divine intervention when the birds were ambushed by a seagull and a large crow. Thousands who gathered outside the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican watched as a mid-air tussle ensued, with one dove losing some feathers as it escaped the gull’s grasp. The other was repeatedly pecked by the crow. It was not clear what happened to the doves after they flew away. Before the scuffle, Pope Francis appealed for peace in Ukraine, where anti-government protesters have lost their lives. He hoped for talks to avoid violence and that ‘the spirit of peace
Angry birds: The doves are attacked by a seagull and a large black crow and a search for the common good is in the hearts of all’. The doves quickly started trending among Twitter users yesterday. One wrote: ‘Pope’s peace doves attacked by satanic crow’ while another said: ‘That can’t be a good sign.’ But Jackie Watkins tweeted: ‘Perhaps next time they will release a flock of cardinals to act as bodyguards for the doves.’

DUBLIN’S buskers may soon be facing a night in the cells, for being too noisy. Dublin City Council’s Arts Strategic Policy Committee will vote on the new law on Wednesday, which could see street performers have their equipment confiscated and face fines of up to €1,900. Under the proposed bye-law, buskers would be banned from residential areas
and from performing before 9am or after 11pm. Exceptions are Grafton Street and Temple Bar where the weekend curfew would be extended to 1am. If a garda deems the noise is ‘so loud, so continuous, so repeated’ that it would annoy, the officer can order them to leave the area. If the law is passed this week, it will then be voted on at a full DCC meeting.

Bin firm vows it’s business as usual after monster fire by jOAnnE AHERn
THE bin company whose plant went up in smoke at the weekend has insisted ‘every effort’ will be made to relocate staff and that collections would go ahead as usual. Plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the west Dublin Oxigen Environmental facility close to the M50, well into Sunday. Residents in surrounding areas were warned to stay indoors and keep windows and doors shut amid fears the hazardous materials at the plant and toxic fumes from the fire could pose a health risk. Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed the fire had finally been contained, but it continues to smoulder. No one was injured in the inci-

In the meantime, Oxigen has said customers will not be affected. In a short statement, it said: ‘Oxigen Environmental would like to assure all customers that the fire at
our Ballymount, Dublin site will not disrupt any services.’ While the company’s offices and its fleet escaped largely unscathed, a building housing waste processing systems was completely gutted. Around 60 of its 120 staff worked in that building. The firm said it hopes to redeploy as many of those as soon as possible. Spokesman Martin Harrell said: ‘We have 25 locations throughout the country and every effort will be made to relocate people.’ Gardaí last night said local access would only be given to businesses inside the cordon until further notice, with entry via Turnpike Road/ Link Rod, Turnpike Road/Ballymount Avenue and Calmount Avenue and Ballymount Avenue.
8mts jail for attack on Oz pub bouncer MASTERS OF HAIR Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers/promotions

AN IRISHMAN jailed in Australia for an assault on a Sydney bouncer is to appeal his sentence. Diarmaid Dooley was sentenced to eight months over an attack on a bouncer at Scruffy Murphy’s pub. The court was shown CCTV footage of 28-year-old Dooley kneeing the doorman in the stomach and punching him in the face. Dooley pleaded guilty, but said he had been drinking and cannot remember the incident. His lawyer Greg Meakin argued that Dooley should not have been jailed as it was ‘not an unprovoked king-
hit [single blow to the head] on an innocent person’. Speaking to 9News Australia, Mr Meakin said Dooley is ‘devastated’ by the verdict but that it was ‘not a surprise given the current situation’. Research from Monash University found 91 people have died in Australia from such a blow since 2000. However, Magistrate Jane Culver said the crime involved drunken violence and a strong message needed to be sent that such behaviour would not be tolerated. The case returns to court next month.

Protesters attack police building MORE violence erupted in Ukraine’s capital during the weekend as a large crowd attacked a government building with police stationed inside. Big bill prompts lotto cash flush If YOU won the lottery you’ll want to avoid following the example of Angela Maier who tore up the cash and flushed it down the toilet after drinking five bottles of champagne. Her €400,000 win on the German lottery prompted the care home where her husband died to send her a bill towards his medical expenses. After reading the letter she became angry and destroyed the cash, a court heard. Mrs Maier may have made up the story to avoid paying the bills but it would be difficult to prove, a court said.

Orange alert for coasts as 130kph winds on the way by jOAnnE AHERn
COASTAL communities were again bracing themselves for severe weather last night and into this morning with winds of up to 130kph forecast. Met Éireann yesterday issued an orange wind warning for sea front counties along the west coast and a yellow warning for the Dublin area, along with the rest of Leinster; counties Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford. In alerts extending to 9am this morning, Met Éireann forecast winds gusting up to 100kph, with thundery downpours of rain and hail, along with spot flooding in Leinster. Those on the west coast were warned of gusts of up to 130kph. The storm, however, is not expected to bring the same damage as seen in areas of Galway and Clare at the start of the month as severe high tides are not a feature of this latest system. However, structures already weakened by Storm Christine may be vulnerable. The Coast Guard said it strongly advises people to stay away from exposed coasts, cliffs, piers, harbour walls, beaches, promenades or any other coastal areas. It is feared coastal areas damaged by previous storms over Christmas and the New Year will be worst affected by the latest weather system. ESB repair crews were out yesterday fixing faults in hundreds of homes, with lightning strikes in the Galway area hampering repair work.

1,000 turn up for Reform Alliance meeting
Reform member: Creighton
DBS.IE
MORE than 1,000 people attended the first conference of the new Reform Alliance on Saturday. The Alliance is made up of five former Fine Gael TDs and two senators. Former Minister for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton is its most high-profile member. She stepped down from her Government position last year, taking a
stance against abortion legislation. The group said its aims are to improve the country’s political and economic systems. It said yesterday that it has no plans to become a political party at the moment, but would not rule it out in the future. Speaking to Newstalk, Senator Paul Bradford said: ‘Everybody knows there is a big appetite for change and
for new politics out there. Whether new politics will require a new political party or not I am simply not sure. ‘I simply, as part of this group of parliamentarians within the Dáil and Seanad, want to try to ensure that we use our current political situation to the best advantage of the country, that we will not be simply servant, silent, negative backbenchers.’

7,000-year-old hunter has a touch of Hollywood hunk
The caveman with movie star looks Remains: His skull Pictures: PA
WITH his piercing blue eyes, deep tan and rugged features, he could be the latest Hollywood sex symbol. However, he is 7,000 years old and lived in a cave. Mesolithic man’s DNA contains a mixture of African and European genes, a study reveals. The caveman, named La Brana 1 by scientists, lived shortly before huntergatherers switched to farming. He was found 1,500m (5,000ft) below sea level in the Cantabrian mountains in northern Spain. ‘The biggest surprise was that he
by nicOLE LE MARiE possessed African versions in the genes that determine the light pigmentation of the current Europeans, indicating he had dark skin,’ said Prof Carles Lalueza-Fox, who led the Spanish study. ‘Even more surprising was that he possessed the genetic variations that produce blue eyes in the current Europeans.’ Prof Lalueza-Fox added that the findings, published by the journal Nature, suggested the eye colour of modern humans changed before their skin tone when they left Africa.
Scarlett ignores fizzy tizzy Burgers and fries on death row dinner menu SCARLETT JOHANSSON refused to back down yesterday after Oxfam criticised her endorsement of a fizzy drinks company said to exploit workers in the West Bank. The 29-yearold actress’s deal with Israeli drinkmaker SodaStream International has caused controversy because the company runs a factory in a settlement claimed by Palestinians. Johansson (pictured), who appears in a Super Bowl ad for the company next Sunday, said she ‘never intended on being the face of any social or political movement, distinction, separation or stance’. Oxfam International criticised
Johansson – one of its global ambassadors – because it opposes trade from Israeli settlements, saying they are illegal and deny Palestinian rights. Johansson, who has represented the charity since 2005, said: ‘I remain a supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine. ‘SodaStream is not only committed to the environment but to building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine, supporting neighbours working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights.’ She also stood by her Oxfam work.
WHEN faced with the imminent prospect of meeting their makers, you would expect guilty death row prisoners to lose their appetites. The opposite is true. It seems condemned men want one final blowout, with those facing execution eating an average of 2,756 calories in their final meal – 2.5 times the daily recommended servings of protein and fat. Prisoners who protested their
innocence, or disputed their sentences, were 2.7 times more likely to skip the meal than those who admitted their guilt. Researchers at Cornell University in the US analysed the final meals of 247 people executed in the country between 2002 and 2006. Almost 84 per cent had meat, almost 70 per cent was fried food, 66 per cent had desserts and almost 40 per cent asked for
branded foods or drinks. Roughly 70 per cent of those who denied guilt requested a last meal, although many refused to eat. ‘The macabre fascination with last meals offers a window into one’s true consumption desires when one’s value of the future is discounted close to zero,’ said postdoctoral researcher Kevin Kniffin. Last meals included burgers, fried chicken, fries and ice-cream.
Huge online mark-up coke ‘can’ that can’t for World Cup tickets say the word ‘gay’ FOOTBALL fans have been warned they could fall victim to an €18million fraud after it emerged World Cup tickets are being illegally offered for sale online at huge mark-ups. Football governing body FIFA’s rules state it is an offence to sell World Cup tickets for commercial advantage, but several users on eBay have listed tickets for matches ranging from the opening game to the final at up to seven times their face value.
THE Sochi Winter Olympics have come under scrutiny because of Russia’s gay rights laws – and now sponsors Coca-Cola has come under fire for banning the word ‘gay’ from its latest media campaign. On the Coke website, users can create a ‘virtual can’ on which they write their name or a message and share it with friends on social networks. However, if you try to enter ‘gay’, Coke responds with a message saying: ‘Oops. Let’s pretend you didn’t just type that.’

Ariana gives grand defence of Bieber
ARIANA GRANDE has leapt to the defence of Justin Bieber following his drink-driving, drag-racing arrest. The 20-year-old feistily accused her friend’s critics of lacking compassion after they made fun of his mugshot. ‘It’s got to a point where I just want him to be OK. It’s not just a kid who’s screwing around, it’s dangerous. It’s very serious and upsetting. He’s the most visible and yet isolated human I’ve ever met,’
she told a US radio station. The Right There singer also urged her Twitter fans to be there for others when they are hurting. An embattled Biebs has jetted off to Panama since his arrest, possibly to bury his head in the sand. On Thursday, he was arrested in Florida for racing a rented Lamborghini allegedly while under the influence of drugs. Police claimed he resisted arrest and had an expired driving licence. Bieber’s
lawyers say he was not speeding and levels of alcohol in his blood were well below the legal limit. According to TMZ, Usher and Scooter Braun – who discovered the 19-year-old on YouTube – have flown to Panama so they can talk sense into the wayward star. Their intervention follows claims that Bieber spends €6,000 a week on cannabis and takes prescription drugs. None of his representatives have commented on the claims.

It’s not clear whether Gomez was at home at the time of the scare, which capped a difficult week as her exboyfriend Justin Bieber, 19, was arrested for drink-driving. I love
her so much. I am taking her to Verbier for a Val de Sloane-style thing. I think she’ll fit right into Verbier society because the toffs love an après ski and so do the Towie lot. Together we will bond over rosé champagne.’ As for romance, the husband hunt continues on the slopes for conway, despite a bout of gay clubbing with Joe McElderry in the Austrian mountains. ‘I’m quite disappointed there have been no romances. I am the only gay in the village and it has distressed me enormously. I am sat at the singles table. Everyone is married. I have been searching for my captain von Trapp,’ he laughed.

Former French first lady keeps her high profile by nICOLE LE MARIE
Media frenzy: Trierweiler’s arrival
THE jilted former first lady of France, Valérie Trierweiler, swept into Mumbai airport last night and was surrounded by photographers before stepping into a limousine. It is the latest chapter in her charity work and she is in India on a trip organised and partly funded by the charity Fight Against Hunger. Many expect her to use the trip to project herself as a Princess Diana-style ‘queen of hearts’, using her international fame to help the world’s poor. Looking relaxed after enjoying first-class service on the Air France
plane, she smiled and waved as she was driven to the five-star Taj Majal Palace hotel. The rest of her entourage followed in a second limousine. Sources in France claim she is now regarded as a ‘loose cannon’ by government officials. She has been briefing the media ever since photographs emerged on January 10 which proved president François Hollande’s affair with actress Julie Gayet, 41. Ms Trierweiler is thought to be behind reports in Le Parisien which quoted ‘a friend’ saying: ‘What’s sad for her is not so much leaving the Élysée but losing the man she loves.’
49 dead in Egypt in Hospital agrees to anniversary protests remove life support THE death toll from clashes between security forces and protesters on the third anniversary of Egypt’s 2011 uprising has risen to 49. The Health Ministry said another 247 were wounded. The Interior Ministry said 1,079 people were arrested. Security forces crushed demonstrations by rival Islamists and some secular activists, while proarmy civilians joined the police in some of the clashes. Meanwhile in Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising, crowds at government-backed rallies demanded army chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi run for president.
A HOSPITAL in Texas turned off life support for a brain-dead woman who was pregnant but whose child was not viable. Judge RH Wallace had given the hospital until yesterday at 5pm to comply with his ruling, which was supported by Ms Munoz’s family.

cover story
Keira Knightley has had enough doom and gloom. She tells Anna Smith why she’s glad to be in a popcorn blockbuster
‘I
t’s been death, doom and destruction for about five years,’ says Keira Knightley, star of Anna Karenina, Atonement and – once upon a time – the Pirates Of the Caribbean series. ‘I thought I’d like to do something different.’ By ‘different’, she means Jack Ryan: shadow Recruit, Kenneth Branagh’s reboot of the spy franchise featuring the all-American intelligence analyst created by novelist tom Clancy, who died last October. the first three films, released in the 1990s, were adaptations of best-selling Clancy novels, as was the sum Of All Fears (2002), the first attempted reboot of the franchise with Ben Affleck. shadow Recruit is the first not to be based on one of the books. Knightley, who describes it as ‘pure entertainment’, puts in a likeable performance as Cathy, feisty girlfriend to fledgling agent Ryan (star trek’s Chris Pine).
“It’s much easier for me to play somebody who is unhappy” During a trip to Moscow, a suspicious Cathy is relieved to discover Jack’s true occupation. ‘Your imagination doesn’t go that far, really, does it?’ she says. ‘“He’s cheating on me, he doesn’t love me…” I think even “he’s a criminal” would come before “he’s a spy!”’
Knightley’s character must then set a honey trap for a Russian crime lord – Branagh. so how was it having to flirt with the director? she grits those famous teeth and grins a knowing grin. ‘Ha ha, in good Hollywood terms it was… fine… He’s a complete sweetheart, so they were probably the most fun scenes,’ she says. ‘I was so interested in working with an actor-director.’ Knightley has just returned from the LA premiere. ‘I flew into LA from London, straight into hair and make-up, straight on to a red carpet. You think: “Am I dreaming one of those dreams where I’ve forgotten to put my dress on?” And you keep looking down, going: “No, it’s all right, I’m wearing clothes!”’ self-assured in many ways – she readily accepts a compliment on her American accent – Knightley also admits to paranoia after a night out with pals. ‘Oh Christ, I’m always apologising for when I think that I’ve been “off” on a night out,’ she says. ‘the next day, you suddenly think: “Oh my God, I think I was really rude.”’ Her playful, undulating tone levels out when we discuss women directors and she ponders the subject of children. ‘I think writing is always going to be easier [than directing] if a woman wants to have a family,’ she says. ‘You can choose to raise your family like my mum [playwright sharman Macdonald] did.’ How about having children when you’re an actress? ‘I should imagine it’s very difficult,’ she says diplomatically. ‘People do it but the moving around… I should imagine it takes more thought.’ Knightley, 28 – who previously dated actors Jamie Dornan and Rupert Friend – wed Klaxon musician James Righton in May. she certainly

looks happy, yet says ‘joy is the most difficult emotion’ to portray on screen. ‘When you’re tired, frightened and nervous, to try and completely overcome that is really, really hard,’ she says. ‘It’s much easier for me to play somebody who’s more introverted and unhappy.’
S
O what does she love about acting? ‘trying to get inside somebody’s head. For a second between action and cut, there will be a couple of times where it’s absolutely real. that’s like the drug, the moment where those words are completely your own. It’s magic. If it’s going well, you get it twice a day; if it’s not, you don’t get it at all.’ An actress since she was eight, Knightley has had few critically panned films but not all have been box-office hits. ‘What’s nice is when people come up to you for films that haven’t necessarily done very well but you find out they’ve had a life afterwards,’ she says. ‘[such as] Last Night, the Edge Of Love and seeking A Friend For the End Of the World…
that one’s actually been brought up three times today.’ this, along with security hovering outside the hotel room door, reminds you that this amiable young woman is a hugely recognised star. Does she ever want to throw in the towel and, say, work in a shop? ‘It depends on the shop!’ she says brightly. ‘I have days when I go to those great independent stores or coffee shops and you’re like, this looks amazing, maybe I could bake cakes and have amazing coffee all day and meet interesting people. But I don’t think I’d be any good at it.’ Why’s that? ‘Because my cakes aren’t that good.’ Knightley is prouder of her weaponry skills. ‘I’m good with a bow and arrow, swords, nunchucks… But I keep hoping that someday someone says: “You have to learn another language for a film.” I suspect that’s the only way I’m actually going to do it. I need to get a French film.’ Until then, Knightley’s got three movies waiting to come out: thriller the Imitation Game, co-starring Benedict Cumberbatch as code-breaker Alan turing, sundance dramedy Laggies with Chloë Grace Moretz (‘she’s just glorious’) and Can A song Change Your Life? (‘an incredibly positive film about friendship and making music’). Enough joyful films for now, then? ‘I’m probably going to go back to the dramatic, let’s cry ones.’ And she looks quite cheerful about that. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is in cinemas now.

Whereas she’s previously worked with multiple producers, this time she teams up with indie singer/songwriter (and long-time friend) ed Harcourt. Song titles (until The Stars Collide, current single Young Blood) suggest boldly spirited stuff. alas, the gentle piano/poprock melodies often sound staid, a foray into intriguing (but very subtle) eastern european folk notwithstanding. ellis-Bextor’s cool, wry voice still connects best with electro-pop, and longtime fans might well find themselves hankering for her breathy earlier hits. hile rumours that The Gloaming are named after an obscure Radiohead song have elicited strenuous protests from the irishAmerican quintet, you can understand why observers would glean a similarity between this trad ‘supergroup’ (another label they would rather avoid) and Thom Yorke’s merry pranksters. Just as Radiohead refract time-worn rock clichés through a prism of avant-garde influences, The Gloaming apply an experimental veneer to such bare-boned constituents of traditional music as keening fiddles and sean nós singing. Drawing on a shared love of progressive jazz, minimalism and modern classical, their debut album is frequently wondrous. As you’d expect of an ensemble whose members include respected irish language vocalist iarla Ó lionaird, Vermont producer Thomas Bartlett, and violinist Martin hayes, the playing is immaculate, even when there isn’t much going on. in fact, the record is at its strongest in those moments where the tempo is pared back to practically nothing: on Allistrum’s March and Necklace Of Wrens, for instance, the musicians feel like introverted guests at their own surprise party, hugging the corners, letting the silence have its space. Sometimes, the soundscapes verge on twee – or perhaps that is just how an irish listener is preconditioned to respond to anything with a whiff of a jig and a reel – but, as it steps away from cliché and caricature, The Gloaming starts to feel deeply hypnotic.

the kind of independent artists who might have once been described as ‘bedroom electronica’ now have their place in the spotlight – take the widespread acclaim for Jon Hopkins or Mercury-winning James blake. there’s also william Doyle, who records as east India Youth, and who created this debut solo album on ace indie label stolen while holed up at his east london base. Doyle’s compositions combine a headstrong spirit with dreamy atmospheres and much of this album sounds like it’d work immaculately as a film soundtrack: the scintillating shimmer of opener Glitter recession or the multi-section title number. the instrumentals also give way to catchy tracks featuring Doyle’s plaintive vocals: there’s a hint of 1980s synth pop on Heaven, How long and an almost folky refrain on looking For

What’s the story? David McSavage is gone all serious on us. The wickedly funny satirist plays a priest in upcoming John McDonagh movie Calvary, starring alongside Brendan Gleeson, Chris O’Dowd and Love/Hate’s Aidan Gillen. He’s come a long way from standing on street corners poking fun at passers-by. ‘It was a dream to work with Brendan Gleeson,’ says McSavage. ‘When you are doing it, you are so into it, you don’t have time to think, “Christ, that’s Brendan Gleeson”.’ The comedian has just finished filming the fourth series of The Savage Eye, with brand new characters (including ‘Daniel D. Looking Sky AtlAntic, 10.35pm Looking for what – Mr right? Mr Goodbar? Mr He’ll Do For A Quick One In The Bushes? The complicated business of modern gay relationships beats at the heart of this slyly funny sex comedy, which charts the efforts of Patrick (Jonathan Groff, centre, with Frankie J Alvarez and Murray Bartlett) and his mixed-up group of San Francisco friends to negotiate their way through a minefield of mixed messages, awkward dates and dodgy internet profiles in their quest to find true love – or at least a sexy room-mate. Following Match Point and Scoop, Woody Allen’s third culturally clueless ‘London’-set outing sees a pair of working-class brothers – chronic gambler Colin Farrell (the film’s one saving grace) and aspiring wide boy Ewan McGregor (sporting a cockney accent he’s bought cheap off Del Boy) – confronted with a solidly gripping moral thriller conundrum. Will they commit murder for rich uncle Tom Wilkinson in exchange for loadsa money? The dialogue is stonkingly stilted, the editing a car crash and the ‘destiny’ subtext would shame a first-time student playwright. Hang in there and the ghastly characters eventually stop implausibly namedropping Sophocles and get on with some action. But, sadly, the best you can say of Allen’s 2007 tragedy (in more ways than one) is that at least this one’s not meant to be funny.

Find out who is speaking and if you want to meet them you should spend some time researching their work: ‘Research who is holding the event, who is sponsoring it, who is speaking and if possible who will be attending. This will prepare you for the conversations you may have, and it will also ensure that you have identified anybody you wish to meet.’ In some social settings it is frowned upon to be one of the first to arrive, but Mulligan says this isn’t the case when it comes to networking events: ‘It is always best to arrive early to an event. So many people arrive just as a presentation starts, but they have already missed out on the best opportunity for networking. Usually the first people to arrive at an event is the organiser, sponsors and the speakers so if you do want to meet any of those, then this can be the best time to introduce yourself.’ When you get into a conversation there can be awkward pauses and moments when you draw a blank. But for some people even starting a conversation is a daunting prospect. ‘Not everyone else in the room is going to be super confident,’ Mulligan says. ‘one way of realising your networking potential is to think about other aspects of your life where you are more comfortable talking to people, whether it’s with your friends, a social group or in work. Reflect on why you may be more comfortable in that environment and try and take some of the confidence from that.’ Joining a group of people talking might seem something only the most confident networker should tackle, but joining a large group can be easier than approaching a few people deep in conversation. While the inner restlessness you’ve had to deal with the past three years has brought challenges, it has also brought some surprise opportunities, and this can be the case again now. Yet, if you’re interacting with someone new, be sure everything is done formally.
Your ability to charm may know few bounds today. The problem is the way that others perceive you, and there could be a thin line between this and a sense that you’re trying to coerce someone around to your point of view.
Gemini May 22 – Jun 21
sagittarius Nov 23 – Dec 21
For your forecast, call 15609 114 71
You can find yourself bursting with enthusiasm, Gemini. The trick is not to scatter the extra vitality on a range of possible projects. With Venus still closely aligned with Pluto and opposite Jupiter, solid outcomes are important.
For your forecast, call 15609 114 77
Your love of variety is emphasised. However, the downside is that everything routine can seem much more dull than usual. If you can do something completely different, then do. In love, someone unpredictable could be seductive.

You could find yourself still contending with two contrasting energies. One is pushing you to be more daring, the other could find you somewhat ponderous. If you’re working closely with another person, you could come up with some ingenious ideas.

The Moon in your horoscope can help you to articulate your views more directly. You may even find a zany streak surfaces too. If you have an idiosyncratic sense of fun, it can certainly shine.

Your emotional perspective can be more skewed by the moon today. This could see you take something more personally than it is meant. Or, in one particular relationship the atmosphere could be especially charged. For your forecast, call 15609 114 79
Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19

O’byRnE cup kilDare.............................1-10 Meath...............................0-9 by pAuL kEAnE Kieran McGeeney leaves particularly big boots to fill but if it is a problem for Jason ryan in Kildare then it is not apparent so far. Five games into life as ‘Geezer’s’ successor has yielded five wins for ryan, the latest coming in newbridge where Kildare secured back-to-back O’Byrne cup titles. Few fans in the 5,000 or so crowd that braved a bitingly cold afternoon in newbridge lack perspective. and after overcoming Dublin in an epic final last year only to lose to the same side by 16 points in the championship, there were certainly no bonfires being lit around the county. Still, the competition has been quite productive from ryan’s perspective after stepping up from the role of selector to take McGeeney’s management position. The big find of the tournament has been full-forward Darroch Mulhall, the 22-year old McGeeney appeared to overlook. a former Kildare junior, the athy man is enigmatic and exciting to watch, and kicked two beautiful points in the second-half yesterday, one off either boot. He hit four points in all, enough to make him top scorer and to seal a record 11th title for Kildare, who built on a 1-4 to 0-6 interval lead. next week, they will open their allianz League account against Mayo in newbridge and many players may be rewarded for January form. McKeon guides Leitrim to historic win ALL WAS FORgIveN in Carrickon-Shannon as Leitrim’s prodigal sons guided the county to historic back-to-back FBD Connacht football league titles. Wayne McKeon, dropped last summer for disciplinary reasons, was Man of the Match, while another axed player, Tomas Beirne, was involved in the game’s crucial score, a late goal. The 2-5 to 1-7 win over Roscommon on home soil secured the first back-to-back of senior titles ever for Leitrim while, it was just their fifth piece of silverware.
Leitrim: Connacht’s kings Aaron Hickey’s sixth-minute goal separated the sides at half-time as Leitrim led 1-3 to 0-3. And with McKeon pulling the strings and firing 0-2 they retained their lead throughout the entire second-half before Beirne played in John Mulligan
for the crucial second goal. Roscommon pulled back a goal through Niall Daly and Cathal Cregg pointed in the closing minutes to reduce the margin to one but Leitrim held on for a famous win. Meanwhile, All-Ireland hurling champions Clare are through to a third successive Waterford Crystal Cup final after hammering UCC 2-28 to 1-4. Colin Ryan smashed 1-13 while Davy O’Halloran struck the second goal in a 27-point win which secures a final against Tipperary or UL.

Swiss bliss: Wawrinka shares a kiss after winning the trophy PICTURE: REUTERS
Stan the man is living his big dream at last
STANISLAS WAWRINKA admitted his Australian Open victory surpassed his wildest dreams after beating injury-hit Rafael Nadal at Melbourne Park. The 28-year-old Swiss overcame the top seed 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, having survived a crippling bout of nerves sparked by the ailing Spaniard’s dogged fightback in the third set. Wawrinka’s success over Nadal, who was hampered by a recurring back problem, takes him up to third in the world – ahead of Andy Murray. ‘It’s quite crazy what’s happening right now. I never expected to win a grand slam,’ he said. ‘I never dreamt about that, because, for me, I was not good enough to beat those [top] guys. I still think I’m dreaming. ‘It’s a strange feeling. I saw so many finals. I always try to watch the final of grand slams because that’s where the best players are playing. ‘To beat Rafa today, even if he was injured, I think I played my best first set during the match; I was ready to play four hours or five to beat Novak [Djokovic] in the quarters, to beat [Tomas] Berdych in the semis. ‘That shows me I’m doing the right thing after many years. That if you practise well, if you work hard, you will always have a chance to be in a great position to play your best tennis.’
Treatment: Nadal Nadal, meanwhile, insisted he would never have quit a grand-slam final despite the injury problem which flared up during his defeat by the Swiss. The 27-year-old, booed after lengthy treatment in the second set, said: ‘The last thing that I wanted to do was retire. I hate to do that, especially in a final. ‘Since the beginning I felt it a little bit, from the warm-up. At the end of the first set, I started to feel worse.’
Major player Li in full control LI NA says she is better equipped to handle the added pressure of being a grand slam winner after her Australian Open title triumph in Melbourne. Li, 31, added a second major to the French Open crown she won in 2011 with victory over Dominika Cibulkova. As the first Chinese player to win a slam, Li admitted she struggled to deal with the added pressure her breakthrough win produced. She won only six more matches during the
rest of 2011 and it was not until she linked up with Justine Henin’s former coach Carlos Rodriguez in the summer of 2012 that she became a grand slam contender once again. Li said: ‘When I won the French Open I really didn’t prepare for that. I didn’t know what I should do after the win. ‘Nobody told me what I should do. I think now it’s different as I prepared to win the grand slam. ‘This time I was thinking about if I win or if I lose, what kind of life I’ll have.’

Moyes can’t believe luck at landing Juan by JAck fOx
DaviD Moyes admits he is shocked at landing Juan Mata but is hopeful the midfielder is the first of a number of arrivals of similar quality. The spaniard completed a £37.1 million move from Chelsea on saturday after falling down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho and will be unveiled at a press conference today. Having been voted player of the season for the second time last term, Mata’s peripheral role at stamford Bridge had bemused many fans and pundits. and Moyes is equally surprised the west Londoners have sold the 25-yearold to a Premier League rival. ‘i never felt that we would get that opportunity, i wasn’t sure that Chelsea would ever sell him to us,’ said Moyes. ‘Thankfully we got there and i am delighted he is here. ‘i’m a bit surprised because it’s not something that tends to happen very often, especially between Premier League teams. ‘i was surprised when it happened but we have got a really exciting player, a player i’m looking forward to working with, a player i think everybody in football looked at and says he did a great job for Chelsea. ‘i’m looking forward to seeing him in a red jersey and doing it for us.’ on the prospect of more transfer-window signings, Moyes said: ‘This is the first [signing], and there will be many more to come in time. i want the quality of Juan to be the start of it. ‘i don’t think we will have any more [new signings] in January – i’m still working on it and looking to do so. ‘But hopefully it will be the first of some new signings, some new players who will arrive, more likely in the summertime.’

I’m the victor: Moses celebrates
Moses Cherries-picks his moment to stake a claim VICTOR Moses hopes his goal at Bournemouth on Saturday will kick-start his faltering Anfield career. The Chelsea loanee admits he has been out of sorts but scored Liverpool’s opener in the 2-0 win as the Reds progressed into the last 16 of the FA Cup, with Daniel Sturridge adding a second. Moses, 23, had not scored for Brendan Rodgers’ side since the 2-2 draw at Swansea in September and had not featured since the thirdround against Oldham. With his options at parent-club Chelsea limited, Moses viewed his year at Liverpool as a chance to prove he can shine at a big club, and the Nigeria international hopes his goal against the Cherries can help him do just that. ‘I know I
haven’t been myself for the past few weeks but I started and got a goal today,’ he said. ‘I just want to kick on from here and try to get a few more goals. It’s crucial for me and the club.’ Rodgers named a strong side for the visit to Bournemouth despite a Merseyside derby with Everton tomorrow night and Moses is hoping his performance could put him in the reckoning to face the Toffees – who are just one point and two places below the fourthplaced Reds. ‘It’s going to be a massive derby for us and hopefully, if we can get three points against Everton, it will be key for us,’ Moses said. ‘I just want to keep on working hard in training and hopefully play as many games as I can.’

No mata, no matter oscar stars as Blues get Juan over Stoke in FA Cup
by gAviN bROwN
Taking centre stage: Oscar celebrates scoring a terrific free-kick to set Chelsea on their way against Stoke
Jose Mourinho lauded the work ethic of oscar after the Brazilian’s free-kick earned an FA Cup fourth-round win over stoke and vindicated his manager’s decision to allow Juan Mata to leave. Mourinho’s preference for oscar in the central playmaking role was the key factor in Chelsea’s willingness to sanction Mata’s move to united. And, with the spaniard set to be unveiled at old Trafford today, oscar’s eye-catching display made Mourinho’s reasoning easier for disgruntled Blues supporters to stomach.

‘i feel sorry that i didn’t make him happy, but football is football and i build a team around oscar in that position and on the sides the other people is doing very, very well,’ said the Chelsea boss. ‘Juan is not comfortable on the sides. he tried very hard and he did very well in some matches playing on the sides, but it’s not his natural habitat. ‘so when a club like Man united comes and for sure they told him he’s going to play in his favourite position and he wants to go, he goes.’

Dublin fans set for a Croke Park double-header
Results: Hurling boss Anthony Daly promises a fullblooded display PiCture: inPho
Dublin GAA fans will be able to watch both county teams in competitive action at Croke Park next Saturday writes Paul Keane. The Walsh Cup final between Dublin and Kilkenny has been confirmed for a 5pm throw-in, ahead of the Allianz Football League opener between Dublin and Kerry. Paul Ryan’s late winner in Gorey yesterday made it possible as Dublin’s hurlers overcome Wexford 1-15 to 1-14 in their Walsh Cup semi-final tie. And with Henry Shefflin guiding Kilkenny to a 1-24 to 0-15 win over
Galway in the other semi-final, provincial officials acted quickly to move the scheduled Parnell Park final to nearby Croke Park. It means a bumper evening’s action for Dublin fans at a knockdown price following the decision to make available €10 tickets for league games, if purchased ahead of the event. It’ll be an early season grudge tie after Dublin knocked Kilkenny out of last summer’s Leinster championship and Dublin boss Anthony Daly has guaranteed a full-blooded display.
‘There’s no stage when Dublin hurling can’t be going well,’ he said. ‘There’s no such thing as us trying to peak later on or anything. We need to be performing and getting momentum all the time and that’s why it’s good to be getting results like this.’ Daly had bad news for Dublin hurling and St Vincent’s football fans, however. He confirmed that dual defender Ruairí Trainor has broken his ankle and is out for several months.
