Stem cells for human use are to be made in a university lab in the first medical programme of its kind in Ireland. Scientists behind the new facility at National University of Ireland, Galway, will aim to produce adult cells to combat conditions like arthritis, heart disease and diabetes. Stem cells created at the lab will be used in clinical trials – following regulatory approval – the first of which is to test their effects on critical limb ischemia, a complication associated with diabetes, which often results in amputation. the Galway facility is one of a handful in europe licensed to manufacture the cells.

Everybody say ‘cheese’... look out, there’s a 7-tonne photobombing pachyderm
Caught on an elephoto lens
Framed: The elephant joins the photobombing craze, which includes, right, an ostrich, dog and cat
Go bananas: Motaba’s big moment
HE’S behind you... and photobombing your carefully posed picture. This seven-tonne bull elephant stakes a good claim for the biggest – and least subtle – photobombing ever. The giant gatecrashed into view as a group of volunteers snapped away before bidding farewell to the Imire: Rhino and Wildlife Conservation in Wedza, Zimbabwe. ‘Now that’s what you call big brother watching you,’ said 24-year-old volunteer Marcus Svderlund, who took the scary shot. ‘While they were posing for the cameras one of the other handlers had got an elephant called
by AiDAn RADnEDgE Makavhuzi to go up behind them and stay there. Eventually, they noticed him and turned round and reacted with laughs, surprised looks and smiles.’ The elephant was, of course, following in a long and rich tradition of animals stealing the limelight in pictures. Among the most celebrated was Motaba, the silverback gorilla, who enjoyed his 15 minutes of online fame as he struck a terrifying/hilarious pose behind blissfully unaware sisters Ella and Bridget O’Brien while they happily waved bananas outside his enclosure at a zoo in Australia.

The Garda watchdog has been called in to investigate allegations senior officers routinely wiped penalty points from drivers’ records. Justice Minister Alan Shatter said he was referring the claims to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission as a matter of public interest. he also moved to extend the powers of the Ombudsman to allow it to investigate complaints made directly to it by gardaí. Last week Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan was questioned by the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee on allegations that more than 200 senior gardaí ‘inappropriately and in most cases corruptly’ wiped penalty points from driving licences. Commissioner Callinan was angered by plans to hear the evidence of two garda whistleblowers and said he will take legal advice on what action is open to him ahead of any hearings. Meanwhile, the Ombudsman’s office said it will be expecting and demanding full and immediate cooperation from all parties. Extended remit: Shatter
Condoms claim change 3 years for loans scam A ChINEsE man has changed his plea on the fifth day of his trial to allowing his rented Dublin flat at apartment to be used as a brothel. recently married Di Wei, 32, with an address at south Circular road, had initially claimed he bought condoms for women living in the flat at The Innings, Observatory Lane, rathmines because he thought they had a business selling condoms online. Judge Patrick McCartan adjourned the case for sentencing on February 24. A second count of allowing an apartment at Custom house harbour to be used as a brothel will be taken into consideration.
A ‘WeLL-ReSPeCTeD’ solicitor who fraudulently borrowed nearly €1million in mortgage bridging loans in an ‘elaborate and sophisticated deception’ has been jailed for three years. Broker Noel Ryan, 67, of Ballinapierce, enniscorthy, Co Wexford, received a suspended jail term of 18 months for his role in the fraud.
SOME children at residential homes run by Catholic nuns in Northern Ireland were made to eat their own vomit, a lawyer has said. Those who wet their beds were forced to put soiled sheets on their heads by members of a harsh regime which was devoid of love, the UK’s largest ever public inquiry into child abuse at residential homes was told. Young people at Sisters of Nazareth properties in Derry were known by their numbers rather than names and many were allegedly subjected to humiliation, threats and physical abuse, counsel to the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry Christine Smith QC said. The treatment of children in church-run homes is a concern of the investigation being held in Banbridge, Co Down. It is chaired by retired judge Sir Anthony Hart. Those allegedly abused at the Nazareth House Children’s Home and St Joseph’s Home, Termonbacca, will give evidence later this week. The religious order has already issued a public apology.
New PSNI chief could be a local THE chances of a home-grown police officer replacing outgoing PSNI Chief Matt Baggott are set to rise after a key application requirement was amended. In the past, only senior officers who had served for at least two years at assistant chief constable rank in a police force outside Northern Ireland were eligible to apply for the PSNI’s top job. But that criterion will now be changed from mandatory to desirable in the process to find Mr Baggott’s successor, when his contract expires in September.

Arson suspected in blaze at Oxigen recycling plant
A MAJOR fire at a recycling centre which has been burning for three days is believed to have been arson. Fire crews used diggers to remove mounds of burning rubbish from inside the Oxigen plant in the Merrywell industrial estate in Ballymount, Dublin, before dousing the flames. Strong winds have helped reduce the risk of pollution and health problems for people and businesses in the area. It is understood investigations centre on the inferno being started deliberately after another fire was reported at a carpet centre in the same industrial estate on Saturday night. The fire, although contained and under control, is expected to burn for days, possibly until Thursday. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has had inspectors on site everyday since the blaze broke out and said there has been a significant reduction in smoke levels. But a spokeswoman warned: ‘In Dublin, smoke from Ballymount fire may cause poor air quality in local areas for the rest of today.’
by ED CARTy
Three units of the Dublin Fire Brigade remained on site to douse flames and ensure the fire did not spread. Tonnes of burnt recycling material – standard domestic plastic, paper and packaging and bales of paper and cardboard collected from businesses – were removed from the storage and processing building at the plant. Fires reignited in some mounds of rubbish even after being soaked. Fire crews on the scene said that was to be expected due to the sheer quantity of hot and smouldering material. None of the EPA’s air quality monitoring stations around Dublin recorded any pollution issues. All stations – Balbriggan, Blanchardstown, Coleraine Street in the north inner city, Dún Laoghaire, Rathmines, Swords, Tallaght, which only tests for sulphur dioxide, Winetavern Street in the south inner city – have good quality, tests on particles and gases such as nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide showed.

A STRAIN of bubonic plague as deadly as the one that caused the Black Death could reappear, scientists have warned. The Plague of Justinian, which killed half the world’s population, and the Black Death were triggered by distinctly different strains of the bacteria Yersinia pestis – which can be spread from rats to humans by fleas – scientists, who isolated genetic traces of the plague from the teeth of two 1,500-year-old victims, found. The findings appear online in the journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

Devilish plan to create sweet chain reaction
Old van man gets surprise Owner: Padraic Corcoran A CORKMAN who tried to sell his 18-year-old VW van in order to buy an iPad received some unexpected help from Volkswagen. Padraic Corcoran advertised his 1996 Transporter T4 van for sale on DoneDeal.ie, saying: ‘She’s in great running order but “The Man” says I need some paperwork to put her on the road. I may as well be looking at a cow’s arse as trying to fix her myself.’ Asking for €650 for the van, he explains he’s ‘saving up for an iPad with all the bells and whistles’. The ad went viral and was spotted by staff in Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Blackwater Motors in Cork. VW’s Alan Bateson said: ‘Between ourselves and Blackwater, we decided to let Padraig keep his van and get his iPad.’ Blackwater Motors gave the van a full valet, as well as a new iPad to ‘keep him and his Transporter together as a family unit’.
11yrs in jail for manslaughter A MAN has been sentenced to 11 years for his role in the manslaughter of a Dublin father whose naked body was found in a field two weeks after he was abducted by a gang of men. Daniel Quinn, 24, of Brega, Balbriggan, pleaded guilty to unlawfully killing Ciaran Noonan, who died of neck compression, and brought gardaí to the site where the body had been dumped. Mother-of-two Lynn Issacson, 34, of Lighthouse Apartments, East Wall, received a three-year suspended sentence for acting as a lookout during the incident.
Soap is best to fight colds ZINC supplements and soap may be the best answer to the common cold, say experts. A review of 67 trials indicated that washing hands was one of the most effective ways to keep colds at bay, while at least two studies showed zinc helped protect children, and may work for adults too. On the other hand, the idea that taking vitamin C can stop you having a cold appeared to be a myth, according to the evidence. The benefits of other remedies such as ginseng, gargling, vapour rubs and homeopathy remained ‘unclear’ said the researchers.

Smoothie operators: #spreadgood tweets projected on the Powerscourt Centre last night
SOMETIMES the most bananas ideas are the sweetest, and so it was when Innocent Smoothies launched their new website by projecting ‘nice’ tweets onto the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre yesterday. Tweets to @innocentireland with the hashtag #spreadgood were emblazoned on the façade for the smoothie brand’s new campaign to making people smile. They went along the lines of ‘you are as cool as the other side of the pillow’ and ‘all future wigs should be modelled on your hair’. Pass It On is a website which creates a personalised compliment and users are encouraged to share them on Twitter. According to Innocent creative director Dan Germain, the fruity drinks are all about goodness for everyone. ‘Innocent is simply about tasting good and doing good, not just for you, but for others,’ he told Metro Herald. ‘We want people to start their own chain of good by logging on to chainofgood.ie/ passiton and getting involved,’ he said. Since 2004, the innocent foundation has donated ten per cent of profits to projects including Send A Cow and Age Action Ireland. Approximately €6.4million has been donated so far. Innocent Ireland marketing manager Ali Gibbons said the hashtag #spreadgood began to spread yesterday with a dominolike effect, adding: ‘People are starting their own chain of good by complimenting their friends on Twitter and being nice to each other.’ See chainofgood.ie/passiton
innocent Marketing Maverick dishes the dirt at nCi
Forget the business babble, just be useful or interesting If YOU can’t be interesting, at least be useful – that’s the message that marketing guru Dan Germain wants Irish companies to embrace. Talking like a business is a bad idea, according to the head of global branding at Innocent Smoothies. He believes that people too often forget the importance of memorable branding and distinct language – relying too much on the idea money can solve all their marketing problems. ‘Words should be interesting or helpful because if they’re neither, they’re pointless.’ said Dan, speaking at National College of Ireland’s new Marketing Mavericks series in association with Metro Herald. ‘Business gets lazy when it has money – it forgets that people aren’t stupid. They know when someone is trying to sell them something. ‘So there’s no point spending tonnes of money on shouting or exaggerating. Rather, companies should strive to add products or messages that are useful and interesting
by DAviD kEARnS to people’s lives,’ Dan added. The creative mind responsible for Innocent’s hugely innovative marketing said creating a unified ‘tone of voice’ that speaks to a business’s target audience was the way to be heard above the market chatter. ‘Why do any of us buy Moleskine notebooks for €15 when we could
‘Create a tone of voice to be heard above the chatter’ get another brand for €1.75? Is it because the quality of note-taking is any different? ‘Or is it because when we pick up a Moleskine and read the back and it says stuff about Van Gogh and Hemmingway... and we think ‘and me?’. That’s the subtext, that you’re about
Intuitive approach: Germain to get really clever. And it is that little bit of interest that each Moleskine tells – that mythos created around each notebook that leads us to pick the more interesting option. ‘That’s why we spend €15 on a notebook and why that company floated itself last year for just over €600million on the Italian stock market,’ Dan added.
Citing Apple as one of the best known and most consistent global brands that does not have any brand guidelines, Dan said Innocent takes a similarly unconventional approach and relies on its brand values being embedded deep within the business. ‘Our tone of voice is still, largely, intuitive. It grows organically and is a reflection of the personalities of the people working for us,’ he said. ‘People come to us and ask us what their tone of voice should be and I haven’t got a clue? My first thing to say is, “how do you think it feels?” ‘It’s not complicated – follow your instinct and you will find your personality. There is a person in your building that embodies everything your business is, find them and have them write everything.’ Innocent want people to start their own ‘chain of good’. GRAMMYS SPECIAL
‘Whore’ Beyoncé angers parents with raunchy act by ANDREI HARMSWORTH
B
eYONcé won’t be holding her breath for an invitation to the next mothers’ coffee morning. The diva was dubbed a ‘whore’ by parents who got more than they bargained for at teatime. The singer got the world’s pearl-clutchers into a tizzy when opening the Grammys in LA with her racy track Drunk In Love. Bey felt the online backlash when she took a leaf out of Rihanna’s book by spreading her legs on a chair in a G-string and coming undone up top during an apparent wardrobe malfunction. Viewer Mandy Flores wrote on Facebook: ‘Aren’t u a mother now!!? Thought u had class, how trashy, and I couldn’t even let my eight-year old watch. U have never done anything like that! So disappointed.’ Others quickly reached for the controller, with JJ Boogie tweeting: ‘Opening Grammy song performance inappropriate for young children. Thank you Beyoncé.’ Another mortified woman said the 32-year-old looked like a ‘whore on stage’. The 17-time Grammy winner wasn’t shy in coming forward when she took inspiration from Miley cyrus by rubbing up against hubby Jay Z on stage. Angry parents were pushed to the edge when the star’s next-to-nothing outfit let her down in a Janet Jackson-moment as she suffered an apparent nipple slip. The flesh flash was enough to push fans over the edge. ‘Beyoncé had to open up with the nip slip,’ tweeted Tyler Malone.
Pharrell ahead of the pack in his bizarre hat Among all the stunning gowns and suits, it was a hat which stole the show at the Grammys. Pharrell Williams’ bizarre headgear caused such a stir at the awards ceremony that it spawned its own Twitter fanbase. Shortly after the 40-yearold appeared on the red carpet, an account was
set up with the message, ‘hey’. A number of tweets followed, including: ‘Must have hats to get lucky.’ Williams said: ‘It’s a Vivienne Westwood Buffalo hat from when she was with Malcolm McLaren. ‘It’s not vintage – I would’ve been really stylin’ if I had one from the 1980s.’

A Swift U-turn for winless Taylor Taylor Swift deserved the Grammy for worst poker face after she celebrated a win for album of the year – only to realise her name had not been called. She was captured gasping loudly on camera when she misheard Alicia Keys announce the winner. The 24-year-old quickly switched to applause as it dawned on her Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories had won the award instead of her album Red. Swift also raised eyebrows for head-banging during her performance of the ballad All Too Well and dancing badly to Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar.
Reznor rages after producers pull plug Trent Reznor threw a strop on Twitter after his supergroup line-ups was cut short at the end of the night. The Nine Inch Nails frontman, 48, was on stage live with Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl, Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsay

Marcos picture hunt hit by money woes
by AiDAn RADnEDgE HOLLYWOOD star Jude Law only found out yesterday that a member of his own family had been selling secrets about him to the News Of The World, he told a court. The Oscar-nominated actor described being betrayed by a relative – as well as by a friend and an employee – who had been spreading stories about his private life. He said details were leaked to the press about an angry phone call he made to James Bond star Daniel Craig over rumours of an affair with Law’s then-girlfriend Sienna Miller. The revelations came as a former NOTW reporter told the UK’s phonehacking trial at the Old Bailey he had been employed for his phone-hacking experience and skills. Law said he discovered last autumn a close family member had been passing information about him to the nowdefunct paper.
But he said he ‘was never aware any money had been exchanged’ until y e s t e r d a y ’s hearing. Law, 41, said: ‘I didn’t know a family member Betrayed: Law talked to the paper but I suspected it – there was such a constant flow of information around me and my life. I suspected many people over the period of time.’ Timothy Langdale, defending exNotW editor Andy Coulson, wrote the alleged informant’s name on a piece of paper to show to Law. The actor replied: ‘Are you aware whether I was aware of people being paid to get information? I wasn’t aware of it.’ Law said press interest in him intensified from 2001 onwards
pHiLippinES: The search for 150 paintings once owned by former first lady Imelda Marcos is being hampered by a lack of funds. The works by painters including Michelangelo and Van Gogh have been missing since Marcos’s husband, Ferdinand, was ousted from power in 1986. The agency recovering the couple’s ill-gotten wealth, said its budget was too small to trace all the pictures. A Monet once owned by Ms Marcos was sold by a former aide for €25million last year.
is it Rover and out for Moon mission? CHinA: Moon rover Jade Rabbit may have to abort its three-month mission after encountering ‘mechanical control abnormality’. The exploration vehicle has run into trouble attempting to shut down its solar-powered probe during the two-week lunar night, when temperatures fall as low as -180C (-292F). Scientists are trying to repair the vehicle, which landed last month. It was the first ‘soft’ landing by a space probe in 37 years.

pope’s blood stolen from church iTALY: A holy relic containing the blood of the late Pope John Paul II (pictured) has been stolen. The gold case, along with a crucifix, went missing from a church in the village of San Pietro della Ienca on Sunday. ‘In a sense, a person has been stolen,’ custodian Franca Corrieri said. Bitcoin traders charged Coronation Street actor with money laundering cleared of one sex charge TWO Bitcoin traders have been charged with selling more than €700,000 of the virtual currency to users of online drugs market Silk Road. Charlie Shrem, a high-profile figure in the Bitcoin community, and Robert Faiella are accused of conspiring to commit money laundering and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. The pair are accused of taking part in a scheme to sell more than $1m in Bitcoin to criminals on Silk Road, which was shut down by the FBI last year.
The plot allowed the site’s users to buy and sell illegal substances anonymously and ‘beyond the reach’ of police, it is alleged. Charges announced by police and prosecutors yesterday accused Shrem, 24, chief executive officer of the exchange BitInstant.com, of changing cash into bitcoins for Faiella, 52. Shrem was ‘fully aware’ Silk Road was a drug-trafficking site and used it himself to buy drugs, authorities alleged. Shrem, who was arrested on Sunday in New York, was expected to appear in court last night. Faiella was arrested yesterday.
On trial: William Roache
SOAP star William Roache has been cleared of one of the seven historic sex allegations against him after the prosecution offered no further evidence. The jury in his rape and indecent assault trial at Preston Crown Court was directed by the judge to return a not guilty verdict on the single count of indecent assault. The allegation was one of two made by a woman who said she was 14 when Roache, who plays Ken Barlow in Coronation Street, twice made her perform a sexual act on him. Roache, 81, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, remains on trial over two counts of rape and four of indecent assault. He denies all the charges.
Sky cloud clout beats OneDrive MICROSOFT is renaming its cloud storage service OneDrive after BSkyB took issue with its former name, SkyDrive. The two sides settled the dispute last July after the British broadcasting group won an initial case in a UK court. Microsoft said the change would be made soon, but did not give a date. While the rebranding does not involve a change to the service’s logo – two blue clouds on a white background – it does bring the name in line with brands such as corporate strategy, One Microsoft and game console, Xbox One.

onations are not coming out of my pockets any longer. When i was a kid, i did marathons, readathons, etc., for noble, but lost, causes – 30 years on, those same issues remain. now, apart from top-ups for certain management figures paid out of charity money, there is another issue: chuggers. Yes, the charity mugger. When unemployed last year, i noticed several adverts on FÁs looking for chuggers at a rate of €16 per hour. it turns out, the person who i thought was standing out there out of the goodness of their heart, was a well-paid employee earning some €28,000 per annum. so, what percentage of donations does actually go to the ‘cause’? surely a group of chuggers needs to hook at least one person every hour to cover their salaries, their teamleader, managers and the CEo? What does actually go to charity? LooksAfterHisOwnPocket

Back in the bright light I Mogwai may be self-confessed contrarians but their bond runs deep, writes Arwa Haider
t’s a soggy, dreich kind of winter’s day when Mogwai guitarist/songwriter stuart Braithwaite drops by Metro HQ, but the Glaswegian indie hero is still in cheery, chatty spirits. His fivepiece have just revealed their excellent eighth album, Rave tapes, recorded as ever at their own Castle Of Doom base in the scottish city, and released on their Rock Action label. While many British acts opt for studios with stateside glamour, perhaps braving the elements of home turf just heightens the heady moods of Mogwai’s music. ‘In the back of my mind, I would love to hang out on a

beach in Malibu and record an album,’ he muses, over a cup of canteen coffee. ‘Actually, we’d probably make the same bloody record. As contrarians, we’d probably make the music sound even bleaker. And I’d probably hurt myself skateboarding in the sunshine.’ In truth, Mogwai have never really revisited the same record since their 1997 debut, Mogwai Young Team. Each of their projects adds new layers to their largely instrumental rock. On Rave Tapes, there are heavier beats and electronic elements, including the deliciously ominous track Remurdered, which evokes cult zombie soundtracks. Braithwaite happily recounts the inspiration behind this title: ‘We’d been told a story where these guys had killed someone, then the body had moved when they went back – so they had to find it, and do it again. I just thought it was a fun, atypical song.’ The band seem to have thrived in the hectic build-up to this album. Over 2013, they also showcased their forte for soundtrack work, creating the score for spooky French TV drama The Returned (they’re now planning
“We’re pretty much all balding Scottish guys” fresh material for series two), and playing their brooding soundtrack for football film documentary Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait live for the first time. ‘We’d been writing Rave Tapes all year, so it was ludicrously busy,’ says Braithwaite. ‘But it was good in that respect, because we were quite up to speed with playing, and I think that helped the album come together. Deadlines are a very motivating factor.’ He adds that they’ve created further ‘very different’ songs, destined for an EP and box set. In the midst of all that activity, Mogwai haven’t been dissuaded from reining things in when they need to. ‘We were quite relaxed about keeping an element of minimalism on this album,’ explains Braithwaite. ‘There are a few songs where it’s only one or two people playing at once, rather than throwing loads of sounds at people.

Tour de force: Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite (far right) says his band appeals internationally because of their sparse use of lyrics There’s still a connectivity between the tracks.’ He’s typically self-deprecating when asked about the odd Rave Tapes numbers that feature his singing, including Blues Hour and (in heavily synthesised guise) The Lord Is Out Of Control. ‘When we put vocals on something, it’s usually an accident or an anomaly,’ he laughs. ‘It’s usually our last throw of the dice before we abandon the song.’
M
OgWAI might not be given to singalong anthems but they still craft an incredibly evocative sound, rounded off by their delight in wordplay. Rave Tapes follows 2011’s acclaimed Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, and Braithwaite points out: ‘We’ve always had an interest in phraseology and weird Scottish subcultures;
it’s never too serious or reverential. With Rave Tapes, it was this weird nostalgic idea that now seems completely antiquated but was a massive part of our youth.’ The band’s atmospheric quality – and the fact that its members don’t stick to rigid roles – particularly comes across in concert, when they can be fiercely intense, not to mention ear-splittingly loud. Mogwai have a busy touring schedule set for 2014, from London headline dates this weekend to gigs much further afield, including their first show in Manila, and a set at Malawi’s celebrated Lake Of Stars festival in September. Braithwaite is already looking forward to these travels. ‘One of my best gig memories is when we played in Kuala Lumpur, and all the girls down the front had the full Muslim hijab on, and they were quite rowdy. It was really cool,’ he recalls. ‘I do think our music is quite
universal because it’s not culturally tied in with lyrics.’ He admits, rather sweetly, that he still gets nervous when he plays solo dates without his Mogwai bandmates. There’s a well-seasoned creative bond here, whether they’re dreaming up indie soundscapes or film scores, or signing new acts to Rock Action Records (‘We want to fulfil a role for other bands that the Chemikal Underground label fulfilled for us when we started out,’ says Braithwaite). Still, it’s no mean feat that they manage to fuse all these shape-shifting strands together into an absorbing vision. ‘We’re pretty much all balding Scottish guys, with different facets,’ grins Braithwaite. ‘Democracy isn’t that difficult. The hive mind manages to make the decision in the end.’

GEARÓID FARRELLY: The podcasting comedian sings the praises of the internet’s inclusive broadcasting forum as his new show Fascinated goes live
It is probably fair to say the internet is the scourge of our generation. We seem to have traded all semblance of privacy for a handy way to share our holiday snaps. But the internet has been a godsend to comedians. Twitter helps us hone our one-liners, endless Facebook lists of ‘Ten things you’ll recognise if you’re Irish/alive/human’ force us to think outside the box, and YouTube and podcasting allows us to make our own uncancellable shows. These are win-win comedy times we live in. Podcasting is the most self-indulgent form of broadcasting there is. Anyone can host a podcast and a podcast that features interviews with celebrities or high ranking politicians is as
valid and available as a podcast about someone’s pet cat.
The joy of podcasting is you get to make shows you would listen to. You can indulge every whim. The audience is everyone, not confined geographically or demographically. It’s everyone with a device of some sort and an internet connection. So everyone. If nobody in your vicinity likes your podcast there might be someone on the other side of the planet jumping
up and down with excitement when they read the episode description.
In making my series Gearoid Farrelly – Fascinated, I got to sit down and interview people who I find fascinating – more importantly people a broadcaster may not be that interested in. A former actress and child star who got a taste for anonymity after she got her first real job in her late 20s, a boy-bander who was forced to stay in the closet and has now made a film about marriage equality, and some people at the epicentre of the explosion of the ‘foodie’ phenomenon. The first episode features a pop singer who is also a midwife. If you want to have a listen they’re on iTunes, and if not, they might be popular somewhere in Sweden. Fascinated: A podcast presented by Gearóid Farrelly is available now on iTunes and Soundcloud See gearoidfarrelly.com

A place to enjoy some dining bliss RESTAURANT REVIEW EATZEN HHHHH
W
ith the Chinese New Year of the horse fast approaching, i figured it would be an opportune time to canter out to Ashbourne on the outskirts of Dublin to try out this highlyrecommended Asian restaurant. As welcoming as the surroundings – stylish and modern décor, like a Stanley Kubrickdesigned space eatery – are the amiable staff who, under the aegis of owner and maître d’ tim tang, are friendly and polite without being in any way intrusive. tang is an exemplary host and casually drops by for a chat with each diner (he even keeps you company if your partner heads to the bathroom – a sign of excellent service to my mind). As for the food… Determined to leave room for our main courses, my partner-in-dine and i plumped to share a starter of chicken satay skewers, for me the acid test for Chinese restaurants. And we were very pleased we did, being served up two deliciously fresh and fleshy pieces of meat in a peanut sauce so tasty i very nearly licked the plate. Another good sign was the lengthy period it took to decide on what to have for the mane, sorry, main course, and we were pleased to see there were many options for those watching their post-Christmas waistlines. My partner opted for the quintessentially Chinese dish of Szechuan chicken, while i went for a variation with the thai beef – one of several concessions to Asian fusion on the menu – prompting a mini debate over
who made the wisest choice. to keep things civil we shared, and were glad we did. the chicken, served with perfectly sticky rice, was expertly cooked – soft and very fresh off the pan – while the sauce, with a nice little kick of spicy heat, was mouth-watering, full of flavour without being overbearing. it was unbridled joy when the thai beef fillet proved just as sensational, with generous amounts of impossibly soft slices of meat that almost melted on the tongue, contrasted
FOOD NEWS with Daragh Reddin RAMANIA Good news for fans of the perennially popular Oriental food chain, Wagamama. As anyone who’s ever slurped on one of their six excellent ramen dishes can attest, there’s always room for additional permutations. With this in mind, the restaurant has introduced a triumvirate of new options – spicy beef brisket, grilled pork and mixed mushroom - to join its existing roll call of six noodle-based staples. Factoid of the day: while many westerners might be forgiven for thinking sushi is the most ubiquitous dish in Japan, it’s actually only eaten on special occasions – ramen is the go-

Both the maple and walnut ice-cream and the raspberry and strawberry sorbet were a suitably light and tasty end to the meal, presented beautifully with little extras of

broken age: act one PC HHHH✩
Old school: Point ’n’ click action in Broken Age
B
roken Age has been one of the most influential video games of the past few years. not because of what it is but because of how it was paid for. Back in early 2012 most gamers had never heard of kickstarter but former LucasArts luminary Tim Schafer used the crowd-sourcing website to ask fans for $400,000 to make what would become Broken Age. What he actually raked in was more than $3.3million in funding. In the interim, little has been seen of the game by anyone other than its backers, and yet, at the same time, dozens of other developers have used kickstarter to create their own dream games, often in genres publishers would never dream of supporting. It seems like the perfect set-up, except the majority of kickstarter titles have been sadly disappointing – often seeming rushed, presumably so backers could see quickly how their money was being spent. Broken Age bucks this trend by being exactly what fans had hoped: a point ’n’ click adventure game in the old LucasArts style. The story features a young boy named Shay and a girl named Vella. Shay lives in a spaceship where he’s mollycoddled by its computer, while Vella is about to be sacrificed to a monster by her village. In terms of gameplay, Broken Age is as old-school as you’d
expect, although the puzzles are not nearly as difficult or complicated as some fans might like. The dialogue is excellent throughout, though, and the eccentric characters are a welcome break from the testosterone-fuelled norm. It’s only a shame the first episode is barely more than three hours long. Despite the spotlight it has found itself in, Broken Age makes no attempt to move the genre forward or recreate the old style in more detail. Instead, it concentrates on being as charming as possible – which, presumably, was the plan all along. David Jenkins

There are still slim pickings in terms of retail video games at the moment, with the only new release today being anime tie-in Dragon Ball Z: Battle Of Z (360/PS3/PSV). Despite being one of the most popular anime in both Japan and the West, Dragon Ball has had a typically rocky history in video games, but this new one has been subject to an unusual amount of effort, with eight-player team battles and more than 70 playable characters. Although a traditional fighting game is at the core of the action, the nature of the
this is most definitely a superphone. Featuring a 2.3Ghz Quad-Core processor, 32GB storage and 3GB rAm, It’s not just fast, it’s noticeably fast. other hardware highlights include the S-pen stylus for handwriting input and a USB 3.0 connector. Samsung has also added some clever software. Air command, a mini menu request hub pops up whenever you remove the S-pen. Two of the most useful apps here are action memo and pen window. Action memo lets
anime means most characters can fly, so arenas are much larger than usual and beam and distance attacks are just as important as fisticuffs. KickBeat steam Edition (PC) is also an unusual take on the standard fighting genre, made by the creators of Pinball FX2. Mixing fighting with rhythm action, it allows you to hit bad guys to the beats of the music playing in the background. With Guitar Hero and other instrumentbased games having fallen out of fashion, this is a welcome return to other earlier styles of music game. Unlike the PS Vita version released last year, this PC one allows you to use your own music to create custom tracks. DJ
you scribble down a note, such as a phone number, then action it (call, save, etc.). pen window really lets the note 3 flex its muscles, a multi-windowed feature for interacting with apps in parallel, brilliant for multi-taskers. S-note is an incredibly useful smart note-taking tool with too many features to list. It’s not just all business with the note 3 either, even the most taxing 3D games run smoothly. Images taken with the 13mp camera are vibrant with lots of smart software here too. When capturing hD video, quality is superb but some optical image stabilisation when recording UhD would have been useful. The Galaxy Gear, Samsung’s latest foray into wearable tech, is a smartwatch companion to your smartphone. Although large, it is smaller than I’d expected and is comfortable.
While the 1.9mp camera on the Gear is a major talking point when people first notice it, that’s about as useful as it gets. You interact with the Gear though a series of swiping and morse code-esque tapping motions on the 1.63” Super AmoLeD screen: sounds complicated but it’s quite intuitive. Connected via Bluetooth, you can make calls like a secret agent if you so wish, but smart relay allows you to answer on your wrist then transfer to your smartphone. Indeed the most useful thing about the Gear were the notifications and ability to relay to the note 3 when required. The pedometer which syncs with the S-heath app on the note 3 was also a nice touch. overall, the note 3 is by far the best Android device I’ve used to date. As a firstgeneration device the Gear works well as an optional companion whose time may yet come. JOANNE AHERN Galaxy Note 3 from free with operators; Galaxy Gear RRP €349

iTH the Winter Olympics just around the corner we’re all braced for global ski mania. Few travel pursuits are as satisfying as the search for a patch of ski heaven. i found mine recently in the quintessential Alpine resort of Söll, located in the largest interconnected skiing area in Austria. From treeless summit slopes to richly-varied, well-groomed pistes, all runs are invariably in top form with spectacular views.
SkiWelt has 279km of slopes – this area boasts no fewer than 1,500 snow-making machines, which guarantee great skiing and the best of snow conditions throughout the season. Adventurous types can ski a different area every day and – should they succumb to boredom easily – need never ski the same slope twice. kiWelt Wilder kaiser Brixental has been voted best international ski resort for three years in a row and was also voted the best value for money ski resort in Austria. It boasts an impressive 91 cable cars and lifts that can carry 142,000 people in less than an hour – some of these are fitted out with heated leather seats, no less. Welcome to the business class of ski lifts. As a seasoned skier and one who also enjoys a little nocturnal activity, I was delighted to

Now you can burn the ski candle at both ends, with 13km of floodlit slopes providing skiing until 10.30pm or, if you also fancy a spot of tobogganing, until 3am. We made a pit stop for dinner in a wonderful mountain restaurant named Stöcklalm, run by the Eger family. Here we enjoyed a warm fire and a hearty meat and cheese fondue with all the trimmings. This is a lovely, leisurely way to dine – and also great fun. And we could see from the bill why this
Snow patrol: skiers on the slopes at Söll; left, the igloos at Hochbrixen area won the best value resort prize: the meal cost us just €24 each. Afterwards, we skied in the shadow of a bright full moon, and for a few minutes I had the mountain completely to myself. It was a moment to remember. Then the local doyenne of night skiing, Anita Baumgarten, suddenly whooshed past and shouted, ‘Race you down!’ The Winter Olympics had come early...

kiWelt has 70 beautiful Alpine mountain restaurants offering local specialities, with genuine Tyrolean charm setting the tone everywhere. The schnitzel in Tanzbodenalm and the apple strudel in Alpengasthof Hochsóll are not to be missed. Stúck Pressknódel in der Suppe (pressed dumplings made with potato and cheese in soup) is a local favourite that made me revisit my relationship with dumplings. Delicious.
Of course, no ski holiday would be complete without the all-important après-ski, and Söll certainly does not disappoint. There is a great selection of bars and clubs offering live music: Rossini’s, the Whiskey Muhle and the Red Dragon are all worth a visit. A trip to the AlpenIglu in Hochbrixen is a must, with its great Ice Bar and gorgeous interiors; it even has a fantasy Ice Chapel and cosy overnight igloo suites if you fancy tying the knot. And be sure to take a brief journey back in time at the Simonalm, a 400-year-old farmhouse steeped in tradition where the incomparable Maria regales visitors with everything from tips on bread-making to the ancient lore of the local Hexen, or witches. For families there is also an excellent babysitting service and kids’ ski school, kinder kaiserland, in Scheffau. Warm welcome for revamped winter resorts From a billion-euro resort to the jewel in the Queen’s crown, Fraser Wilkin finds three top winter venues to get excited about The Chedi comes to Andermatt With its formidable expert terrain and a big reputation for powder, Andermatt is Switzerland’s original steep and deep destination. The village had remained virtually unchanged since its inauguration as a winter resort more than a century ago. Enter Egyptian businessman Samih Sawiris, with a €1.2billion-vision to transform this sleepy Swiss backwater
into an exclusive international resort. His new five-star hotel and apartment development, The Chedi Andermatt, may be vast in scale (there are 106 suites) but combines traditional Swiss elegance with trademark Asian influences intended to create a zen-like haven of tranquillity. There is also an indoor and outdoor pool, and a luxury
spa offering every conceivable form of relaxation. The completion of the Chedi is only the first phase in an ambitious project that will eventually see six new luxury hotels, 490 apartments and a gradual expansion of the ski area towards Sedrun in the neighbouring valley. Doubles are from €679 per night including breakfast. www.thechedi-andermatt.com
Val Thorens gains another five-star hotel Not content with being the highest resort in the Alps and part of its largest ski area, Val Thorens has made a conspicuous attempt to move upmarket in recent years with a string of luxury openings. This season’s big news is the launch of the Koh-I Nor, the resort’s third five-star hotel and the highest five-star spot in Europe. The name may be extravagant (KohI Nor is the 105.6 carat diamond in the Queen’s crown) but its philosophy is one of understated luxury, with an
emphasis on clean lines and natural light. Taking control of its two restaurants is chef Yoann Conte, who has two Michelin stars and promises
one of the finest gourmet experiences in the French Alps. Erna Low offers seven-night packages at the Koh-I Nor from €1,637pp. www.ernalow.co.uk

Breckenridge opens new mountain Breckenridge, one of Colorado’s highest and best-known ski resorts, is opening an entirely new mountain this season. In what has been described as the largest expansion of a North American ski resort in the last decade, Peak 6 will include 400 acres of lift-served terrain and more than 140 acres of ‘hike-to terrain’. More significantly, though, the expansion includes lots of high intermediate bowl skiing, reaching more than 3,600m. This is unusual for North America, where only experts are normally privy to such lofty terrain. Inghams offers seven-night packages at the Beaver Run Resort from €1,255pp. www.inghams.co.uk

Keep safe on the slopes M
any people take to the slopes at this time of year. although skiing and snowboarding can be great fun, Michael Schumacher’s accident over Christmas shows you have more chance of getting seriously injured on a skiing holiday than during a week in the sun. Travel insurance is therefore particularly important when you’re going on a skiing holiday. and many families don’t realise that the cover they will for their time on the slopes is significantly different to that they will typically need for a week in the Costa del Sol. another big mistake is waiting until the last minute to buy travel insurance. almost a quarter of travel insurance claims arise because a holiday has been cancelled. Cancelled holidays can happen between the day you book and the day you leave for the airport – yet many families are not insured for cancellations because they have delayed taking out travel cover. Here are 10 steps that will ensure you aren’t left high and dry by your travel cover if you get into trouble on your ski holiday. l Before you buy travel insurance, examine the small print for exclusions. not all policies automatically cover snowboarding, tobogganing and ‘off-piste’ (back-country) skiing. l Ensure your ski travel insurance includes emergency assistance cover. If you need to be helicoptered off a mountain, the cost of such a rescue can be very high. l Personal liability cover is another must. If you crash into an-
other skier or snowboarder and are sued for injury or damage, you will need this. l Check if your policy has ski equipment cover. If you lose or damage your equipment, this cover will usually foot the bill for repairs or replacements. l you would be very unlucky to encounter an avalanche while you’re away – but it does happen. avalanche cover will usually

pay for additional accommodation and travel expenses if you’re stuck in a resort after an avalanche. l Poor weather conditions could lead to the closure or part-closure of your ski resort. Piste closure cover typically pays out for each day your resort is closed, so it’s worth having. l If you’re injured, your chances of getting the full use of your ski pass, equipment and lessons are pretty slim. Ski pack cover reimburses you for the cost of your pass, equipment and lessons – so check that this is included. More importantly, check that you have medical expenses cover. If you’re injured and need to go to a local hospital or medical clinic, the hospital bill is likely to be a lot more than the cost of your ski pack. l If you are a competitive skier and you don’t want as many restrictions on the slopes as those who opt for standard winter sports cover, consider specialised cover for ski racing. l Buying an annual multi-trip policy is a good way to ensure you don’t find yourself without cover should your holiday be cancelled. These policies cover you for the year so you don’t have to take out travel insurance every time you travel. However, these policies usually won’t cover individual holidays that are more than a month long unless you have upgraded your cover. l If you have private health insurance and are getting a discount off your travel insurance as a result, ensure that your private health cover is up-to-date – and that all the people named on the travel insurance policy have private health insurance. Anelka won’t be driven out over ‘quenelle’ issue
PICK AND GO: Luke Fitzgerald got togged out to publicise the Guinness Plus app and to highlight the chance to win use of a Guinness Box at the Aviva for you and 15 friends when Ireland play Wales, if you check in to the app at your local pub on Sunday when Ireland take on Scotland in their opening 6 Nations match. All you have to do is pick your ‘best XV’ mates and submit it, keeping your fingers crossed. If you are unlucky with that, there is also a chance to win a VIP weekend at Twickenham for the most anticipated match of the series, when England host Ireland.
FOOTBALL Nicolas Anelka insists the
controversy over his ‘quenelle’ goal celebration won’t drive him away from West Brom during the transfer window – despite interest from Italian giants Lazio. The French striker faces a minimum five-match ban if found guilty of making an anti-Semitic gesture at West Ham on December 28. But Anelka tweeted: ‘Thanks to Lazio & all the others clubs who wanted to sign me this last days. See you this summer if I decide to continue... But the question is why should I leave my club & England? I’m happy here & I did nothing wrong... So now it’s time to stay focus on my football with my club & I will try my best on the pitch like I always do.’

When asked about the speculation over his position, Pulis said: ‘I’m not one of those people – I spent ten years at Stoke. In 2009, then Liverpool boss Benitez launched an attack on former Manchester United manger Sir Alex Ferguson claiming he received preferential treatment from football authorities. Chelsea boss Mourinho claimed last week the Gunners get a certain ‘influence’ when it came to their schedule, something Wenger was eager to refute. The Arsenal boss even pointed out that an independent study had shown that his side are actually the ones who suffer. ‘It is simple – look at the fixtures and analyse it. I trust you will give an objective view,’ the Arsenal boss said. ‘You will see Arsenal are behind all the other teams. In the last five years all the objective studies that have been made show Arsenal had less rest than any other team in the top four. ‘That is fact. It has nothing to do with my opinion. It is an independent company that made [the study] that shows Arsenal had less rest than any other team in the top level.’ Wenger insisted the war of words was not part of any mind games on his part. ‘It is not mind games. It is opinions,’ he said. ‘But I don’t live with opinions, I live with facts. and the facts don’t depend on me or Mourinho. ‘I didn’t make the study, it was made by an independent company. LIveRPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers admits weakened teams on both sides may well make it difficult for the Merseyside derby to match November’s 3-3 draw. Moyes gets to the heart of the Mata by DAvE fiLMER
Worth the eight: Mata poses with his Manchester United shirt after completing a £37.1million transfer Picture: PA
DAVID MOYES fears Manchester United’s current crop of players is not good enough and says Juan Mata’s arrival is just the start of his Old Trafford revolution. On the day United unveiled their £37.1million record signing, their manager admitted the buck stops with him for a hugely disappointing season but pointed the finger at his players for letting him down. Mata is poised to make his debut against Cardiff tonight and Moyes intends to bring in more players of that calibre in the summer. ‘I am disappointed we are not in a much stronger position,’ admitted Moyes. ‘I am disappointed with how we have played. ‘I ultimately take the rap. But what I will do is make it right. I’m going to get better players in. Unfortunately, I don’t think there
will be more in January. But it will change. ‘I have given every player the opportunity to play and show what they can do. We have had a pretty good chance to have a look at it.’ The exit of Anderson on loan to Fiorentina, plus the impending departures of Wilfried Zaha and Fabio confirm Moyes’ intentions – but that is likely to be the tip of the iceberg. ‘The players have to perform,’ added Moyes. ‘If they want to be here and making sure they have a jersey, they have to show it in the games. Undoubtedly, this club wants to be at the top. We want to be challenging. ‘At this moment in time we have failed to do that. We want to do something about it.’
