Girl survives 1km plunge to Earth by aaron patrick A SKYDIVING teenager has astounded doctors by surviving a fall of almost 1km. Trauma surgeon Dr Jeffrey Bender said Makenzie Wethington, 16, hurt her liver, broke her pelvis, lumbar spine in her lower back, a shoulder blade and several ribs and a tooth in Saturday’s fall in Chickasha, Oklahoma. ‘If she truly fell 3,000 feet, I have no idea how she survived,’ Dr Bender, of OU Medical Centre in Oklahoma City, said. He said Makenzie was expected to leave the hospital’s intensive care unit. The girl’s parents let her jump, but her father, Joe Wethington, now blames the skydiving firm, who he said should not have allowed it. However Robert Swainson, owner of Pegasus Air Sports Centre, said Makenzie’s father went up with his daughter and was the first to jump. Her parachute opened correctly but she began to spiral downward when the chute went up, but not out, Mr Swainson said. In another skydiving near miss, this time in Wiltshire, UK, a man knocked out moments after he jumped was saved by some quick-thinking friends who caught up with him and opened his parachute. A jump buddy had banged his leg on James Lee’s head, leaving him powerless to arrest his 3,800m (12,500ft) fall. His friends noticed something was wrong as his body hurtled downwards. Mr Lee regained consciousness after landing but he could not remember anything about his near-death experience. He said: ‘I’ve been skydiving for five years and this was my 1,050th jump. I’m very glad that everything unfolded how it did.’ Mr Lee intends to carry on skydiving.

Economy to grow by 2% IRELAND’S economy is to grow by more than two per cent this year. The Central Bank’s first forecast on the outlook for 2014 also warned that more work needs to be done to improve fiscal consolidation and grow employment by improving competitiveness. Gross domestic product – which measures the value of the wider economy including multinationals – is expected to grow by 2.1per cent this year and 3.2 per cent next year. Gross national product – Irishonly businesses which keep profits in the country – is expected to grow by 2.2 per cent this year and 2.5 per cent next year. The Central Bank report said Ireland needs to stick to the same stringent cost-cutting seen in the bailout to ensure ‘continued access to market financing at relatively favourable rates into the future’.

Town infested by rodents puts the stuffed pests in a museum depicting daily life

You gopher for the history

Rich tapestry: Stuffed gophers represent everything from a couple having tea, the museum’s foundation, hunters, poker-playing pensioners, beauticians, bands, bank robbers and much more PicTure: News Dog MeDia THEY are usually a pest – and they cost a fortune to remove. But one enterprising town in Canada found a way of making the best of its infestation of gophers... it put them in a museum. The 47 scenes lovingly recreated in Torrington’s Gopher Hole Museum depict its history and daily events. Among them are a gopher fisherman, pensioners player poker in the old folk’s home and the gopher infestation itself. Other scenes include ‘personalities’ such the cowboy Jeb who

by TARiq TAHiR listens to country and western and has an ambition to appear at the Calgary cattle stampede. Then there’s JT with his red and white scarf, depicted in the museum with his suitcase as he prepares to leave to seek his fortune in the bright lights of Vancouver. The Alberta museum was opened in 1996 and attracts 6,000 visitors each year. Photographer Raymond Walsh, who visited the attraction, said: ‘My favourite was the camp-

ground scene – it’s tough to beat a dead gopher in a bikini. ‘Most people who I’ve shown the pictures to think they’re cute, in a macabre kind of way. ‘There have been a couple of folks who think it’s disgusting, but for the most part the reaction is pretty positive.’ Fire hydrants in the town also resemble gophers and there is a 4m (12ft) statute of a rodent. As the museum states: ‘Life in Torrington is as diverse and as interesting as the gophers and humans who populate this land.’

Craziest coupe on the road MOST of us grew out of our passion for pedalling a toy car around the garden by the time we started school. Not so John Bitmead, who has created an adult version of classic children’s car the Cozy Coupe. The petrolhead, 48, his brother, Geoff, and friend Nigel Douglas spent five months converting a Daewoo Matiz into the oversized toy. ‘I love setting myself a challenge, and once I’d got the idea in my head, I was determined to see it through,’ he said. ‘We were chatting one day about how more people have probably driven a Cozy Coupe than any other kind of car – and it snowballed from there.’ He has copied every detail on the coupe from the yellow roof to glassless windows and over-sized drinks holder. It cost a total of €42,500 to build – though the standard-sized version will

by AiDAn RADnEDgE set you back about €60. The ‘toy’ runs on unleaded petrol and can go from zero to 60mph in 17 seconds. ‘We took it on the motorway once, but I’m too scared to do it again in case we cause an accident,’ Mr Bitmead added. Mr Douglas, who is managing director of Attitude Autos in Oxfordshire, where the other two work, said: ‘We tried to create our version of a classic car. ‘We saw so many of them in people’s front gardens we thought it would be great to make one for grown-ups wanting to relive their youth.’

High tides to cause chaos this weekend

GARDA Commissioner Martin Callinan has dropped threatened legal action against a Dáíl watchdog over the penalty points controversy. Mr Callinan had warned the Public Accounts Committee over its plans to hear evidence from whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe, but he withdrew the threat after PAC agreed to hear the evidence today in private. Justice Minister Alan Shatter has asked the Garda Ombudsman to investigate claims more than 200 senior officers ‘inappropriately – and in most cases corruptly’ wiped penalty points from driving licences.

The River Tolka flood gates and defence gates on the River Dodder being put in place today will be reopened after high tides have passed. As Dublin looks ahead to a busy sporting weekend when All-ireland champions Dublin face Kerry in Croke Park on Saturday, and ireland face Scotland at Lansdowne Road on Sunday, the high tides could cause problems for fans travelling to matches. Dublin City Council has advised homeowners in possible flood areas to protect their properties. in a statement yesterday the Council warned people to stay away from sea walls and not to go close to them to take photographs.

HigH tides are expected to cause chaos this weekend as Dublin City Council puts measures in place to deal with possible flooding. This comes after the disruption earlier this month when the highest tide on record led the River Liffey to burst its banks. The high tides are due to start tomorrow and are set to continue until Monday, with Friday and Saturday’s early tides expected to be particularly high. Sandbags put in place at Clontarf in early January will remain, and large pumps will deal with any floods. The historic wooden bridge at Dollymount may be closed as well as car parks in Sandymount and Clontarf. The Council has said there could be possible lane closures on Victoria Quay and on Wolfe Tone Quay. This evening, the boardwalk along the quays will be closed until Monday,

Eight out of 10 over-50s are obese or overweight

by bRiAn HuTTOn

Dubs star’s attack in pub ‘unprovoked’ DUBLIN footballer Diarmuid Connolly (right) has been ordered to complete an anger-management course before he is sentenced for an unprovoked attack in a pub. Yesterday Judge Patrick Clyne examined updated medical reports of victim Anthony Kelly, whose eye-socket was fractured in the attack by Connolly, 25, of Collins Park, Beaumont, at McGowan’s in Phibsboro on August 6, 2012. Mr Kelly has since recovered. The case was adjourned until a date in May.

MORE than a third of over-50s in Ireland are obese, while a further 44 per cent are overweight, a major new report on ageing has revealed. Problem drinking and reliance on multiple medications is also on the rise among older people. Despite the obvious health risks, the over-50s generally report high levels of satisfaction with quality of life and their incomes have remained stable. The findings are revealed in the latest report by The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (Tilda), a national survey of more than 8,000 people aged 50 and over between April 2012 and January 2013. Health Minister James Reilly said he is concerned about the levels of obesity and its complications including heart disease and diabetes. The report found about one-third of the over-50s report low levels of physical activity and more than half of those aged 75 and over have arthritis. Prof Rose Anne Kenny, who heads up Tilda, said with one fifth of people aged over 65 by 2060, Tilda will assist new policy initiatives to ensure later life years can be healthy and independent.

TWO rugby players from a private school involved in a mass brawl which left a youth with a broken leg have avoided a jail term after the judge in the case said there was ‘considerable ambiguity as to who did what on the night’. Graham Bennett was injured in the row outside Rathmines club Tramco involving 20 youths, including Scott Flood Wiley, 21, of Adelaide Street, Dún Laoghaire, and Evan Lewis, 22, of Coppinger Close, Stillorgan, who had been celebrating Clongowes Wood College winning the Leinster Schools Cup on March 20, 2011.

Gay heiress in public plea over ‘dowry’

No prison for Gay Pride Parade theft A MAN who stole more than €10,000 from the organisation which runs the annual Gay Pride Parade while he worked there as financial director has avoided jail. John Finucane, 35, of Bridgewater Quay, Islandbridge, was given a three-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to stealing cash from the Dublin Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) organisation in 2011. Judge Mary Ellen Ring suspended the sentence on condition Finucane complies with probation services for 18 months.

Gigi Chao, 34, added that ‘it would mean the world to me if you could just not be so terrified of her, and treat her like a normal, dignified human being’. THE lesbian daughter of a flamboyant Hong Kong property tycoon who publicly offered millions of euro to any man who could woo her into marriage has appealed to her father in an open letter to accept her for who she is. Cecil Chao made world headlines in 2012 when he tried to find a man who could successfully win his daughter Gigi Chao away from her partner by offering 500million Hong Kong dollars (€46m), an offer that a Malaysian newspaper who interviewed him last week said he has now doubled. In a letter to her father, published yesterday by two Hong Kong newspapers, Gigi Chao said she knows it is ‘difficult for you to understand, let alone accept’ how she could be romantically attracted to a woman. The tycoon made his offer after learning that his daughter had eloped with her partner Sean Eav to France, where they had a church blessing.

THE number of people who have joined cycling clubs has quadrupled in five years. In 2008, some 5,000 people were club members, but by 2013 this had risen to 19,300. There are now 350 registered cycling clubs and the number of approved cycling events has risen from 350 in 2008 to 950 in 2013. The figures were assembled as One4All’s Bikes4Work.ie scheme reminded those who bought a taxfree bike through their employer when the scheme started in 2009 can do so again as the five-year limit is up.

KEN ROGAN went to hear the Reform Alliance’s ideas for bright, new Ireland, only to be told ideas are the least of our problems

A

referendum on Blasphemy, eh? I say let’s keep it, and bring back stoning too! Then we’ll really be like the Taliban – which is how the rest of the world will see us when that Reform Alliance founds a political party on abortion policy. I went to their meeting in the RDS last Saturday. It was all about inconsequential ideas for political change. Remarkably, blasphemy didn’t come up, unless you count certain speakers distancing themselves from the pro-life party line as adopted by the 1,000 or so members of the converted who were in attendance. Preaching were Tom McGurk, Olivia O’Leary and David McWow-claims, among others, with each session opened by one of the Alliance’s political turkeys gobbling away for a minute or two. Then straight into it: What’s wrong with this great little nation? First up, the High Priestess of Common Sense, O’Leary. If Marian Finucane is the country’s mammy, O’Leary is the sterner, academic aunt. She spoke compellingly about how we had been taught tribalism and mistrust of the State in favour

of other institutions; how we needed to stop cronyism, dodgy board appointments and parish pump politics. And then she undermined her whole argument by

moaning about a ‘freeway’ that got built through her ‘beautiful locale’ of Carlow. That captures our problem in a nutshell: change is important, vital even – just not in my (or Olivia’s) back yard. Having demonstrated the casual doublethink that typifies the Irish electorate, O’Leary made way for a British philosopher and former adviser to David Cameron, who said ‘big government bad!’ and then said we could be the next Israel, entrepreneurially speaking. That made everyone feel weird. He was followed by UCC’s Jane Suiter, who at least hinted that maybe we, the voters, might just be contributing to the problem. No excrement, Sherlock. Then it was opened up to the floor, and the daft and the good had a go at the Freemasons, women (inadvertently) and at sections of the panel, for making it clear they were not fanatically pro-life. That got the biggest roar of the morning; presumably the Creighton turkey was pleased. The afternoon session (I missed the middle one) was opened by the Mathews turkey – a likeable turkey you’d have to say – before McWow-claims (pictured) took the

Diving deep for €60billion treasure trove

A DIVER explores the waters of the world’s deepest lake searching for a €60billion stash of royal gold. He is on the look-out for 1,600 tonnes of treasure thought to have spilled into Lake Baikal, Siberia almost 100 years ago. The hoard, named ‘Kolchak’s gold’ after the admiral who led White Army forces loyal to Tsar Nicholas II, is thought to have been on

a train that derailed into the lake. Another theory was his troops perished in temperatures of -60C (-76F) as they carried the haul across the frozen lake and the treasure sank. Photographer Andrey Nekrasov, 42, has accompanied divers searching for the gold. ‘Divers are romantic people and stories of hidden treasures are always very popular,’ he said.

Trierweiler ‘is ridiculed’ by Hollande by DaNIEL BINNS

FRENCH president François Hollande has been joking with aides about his ex-lover’s emotional reaction to being kicked out of his palace, it was claimed yesterday. The 59-year-old is said to have been amused after Valérie Trierweiler packed her bags and tweeted she would ‘never forget the staff’s devotion nor emotion at the point of departure’. The president – who effectively sacked his first lady after he was caught cheating on her – allegedly quipped that if staff were ‘overcome with emotion’ they should seek his counsel. The comments, reported by investigative weekly Canard Enchainé, came as Mr Hollande’s team seemingly tried to erase the memory of Ms Trierweiler. In an operation compared in France with the likes of Soviet-era Russia, they have removed all references to her – including 130 photos – from the Élysée

You’re tired? My super-commute starts at 3.30am

AS YOU sit on the train or nod off on the bus during the 40-minute ride that seems to last an eternity, spare a thought for Gary Egan. While most of us are tucked up in bed, the 46-year-old is getting ready to begin his six-hour round-trip to work. The father of two sets his alarm for 3.30am to set off from South Wales to his job as head of production for Rocket Graphics in Watford. He clocks up 160,000km (99,400 miles) but said it was ‘absolutely worth the gruelling commute’. Mr Egan added: ‘The industry I work in is quite narrow and there just aren’t the same job opportunities in Wales for me as there are in London. ‘I can’t say it wouldn’t be nice to get a job that was closer to home, but at the moment that it just not possible and I am very happy where I am.’

It costs €1,100 a month in diesel and tolls of more than €2,000 a year. Mr Egan has clocked up 590km (366 miles) each day for the past 18 months on his new Renault Clio, which he chose for its fuel efficiency. He stayed in Porthcawl after longterm partner landed a job with South Wales Police. Despite her occasionally having to call him to make sure he has not nodded off, Mr Egan said he would not want to swap his life in Wales. ‘I like to run at the weekend – and within five minutes of my leaving my front door, I am running alongside the beach and the sea,’ he said. Breakthrough for nut allergies

CHILDREN can be protected from the dangerous effects of peanut allergy by slowly building up their tolerance, research has shown. After six months of the therapy, up to 90 per cent of allergic children taking part in a study could safely eat five peanuts a day. Peanut allergy, which affects one in 50 children, can lead to anaphylactic shock – a potentially fatal immune reaction. It is the most common cause of deaths due to food allergies. The STOP II trial, the largest of its kind worldwide, involved 99 young people aged seven to 16, consuming carefully measured doses of peanut protein. Prevention: Peanut study

A MAN has told an inquiry into church-run homes he deliberately wet himself to dissuade sexual abusers from ‘dropping the hand’ while he was in bed. As a boy in the 1950s he lived at St Joseph’s in Termonbacca, Derry, run by the Sisters of Nazareth order of Catholic nuns, after being abandoned by his parents. The child told how he was placed in a dormitory full of youngsters crying for their mothers and would join in. ‘I used to join in crying. I hadn’t a clue what mammy meant,’ he recalled. The former resident complained about his treatment to a cleric after leaving the home, but was told: ‘You must never speak about this, you and the other orphans are the product of an evil and satanic relationship.’ The treatment of children in church-run residential homes is a key concern of the investigation being held in Co Down.

Spring/ summer 2014 has Lorna Weightman excited about short sleeves, floral patterns and mellow shades

anuary is finally drawing to a close, sale stock is depleting, and spring is just about to come into bloom. Thank goodness. It’s this time of year when I rejoice at the sight of pastels, short sleeves and sandals on shop floors, and begin to think about my annual sun holiday. Spring/summer 2014 is one of the most eclectic seasons in the fashion world to date, with trends and inspiration in abundance stemming from the world’s greatest design houses. I’ve spent the last number of months researching what we can expect from this season, and in particular what pieces we simply must invest in to keep our wardrobes in tune with the catwalk. Without putting a dampener on all things summer, I will point out the obvious – that our weather is not always conducive to shorts and T-shirts, so be cautious when stocking your wardrobe. I tend to stick to a few simple rules when shopping for spring/summer. First, remember that layers are your best friend. Lightweight knits, cotton tops and blouses can all be layered under blazers and jackets, depending on the weather. Secondly, colour is a must and the palette this season is one full of the sweetest shades. and lastly, accessorise,

Prices TBC, New Look Topshop Unique pic, Price TBC Lace Coat €130, Lace Skirt €72 & Top TBC, Warehouse accessorise, accessorise. So with those guidelines in mind, what trends also require our attention? We always associate floral prints with summer, and thankfully this season is no different. Designers such as Peter Pilotto and Erdem have long pioneered prints of all guises on the catwalk, across all kinds of shapes and silhouettes. But there’s just something special about a floral motif that we all love come spring. an easy way to introduce such a print to your look is by keeping it to one piece, like a top or trousers.

Want a celeb look, but without the celeb prices? There’s an app for that. Dublin

Collections from new Look, Bastyan and Warehouse focus on separates, which can be styled with block colours, keeping the look on trend but practical. If, however, you are a bit more adventurous, try the head-to-toe look as seen at Carven and Marni. and, if florals are not for you, there are plenty of polka dots, stripes and digital prints to play with. Sticking with all things girly, the fashion rainbow is certainly sweet in 2014. Mellow shades such as lemon, mint, aquamarine and candyfloss pink are currently in favour at Burberry and Dior, but my personal favourite was Topshop unique. This is not only because I saw the collection first hand as Jourdan Dunn stomped down the catwalk to summer sounds such as Papua new Guinea by The Future Sound Of London, but

simply because it represented summer impeccably, impeccably with bohemian-inspired styling in billowing maxi dresses, jumpsuits billo and wide-legged trousers. Designers are opting for fuller styles this year, as seen in the new midi-length skirt, which I think will work as a nice alternative to a dress if you have weddings or other special occasions coming up this year. The longer length and fuller shape works with cropped tops and knits, as well as with blouses tucked in, and accessorised with a belt to cinch in the waist and give a nod to the 1950s. all you’ll need is the headscarf and you can embrace your inner audrey Hepburn.

City University researchers Mark Hughes, Bobby Pringle and Oisín Mac Fearaí have created a clever little app that makes it easy to track down the clothes you admire – and more affordable alternatives. Whether it’s a celeb in a magazine or a stylish passer-by, all you have to do is take a pic and the app will search more than 550 high-street stores to find similar clothes, shoes or accessories. adies, if he’s a Lad’s Lad or a disdainer, stay away Wouldn’t it be great if we recognised a love rat before falling for them? Psychologist Martyn stewart’s new book, Why Men Really Cheat, seeks to answer that million-dollar question with a mix of case studies, analysis and geek theory. We’re introduced to male types – The Opportunist, The enigma and The swinger (not that sort) – through a series of anonymous case studies, before being thrown into some algorithms and equations that work out the personality types most likely to cheat and why. The conclusions are varied – seeking recognition that they are ‘somebody’, a fear of missing out and having compulsive drives that require immediate gratification. Technology makes cheating easier and, as stewart points out: ‘Our society is built on ease. its aim is to satiate selfish needs.’ Part Cosmo, part Tomorrow’s World, the book concludes with five types to avoid. They include The Lad’s Lad (easily swayed, easily drunk and easily cheating); The Manipulator (calculating and secretive); The stupid Mistake (acts first, thinks later); The disdainer (a misogynist lacking patience or empathy – except when he’s texting other girls) and The Opportunist (carefree, hedonistic and grabber of life’s chances – and girls’ numbers). But of the 27 character types, i couldn’t find one i suited. Your man’s ‘type’ is decided by a complex formula called BeT – brain type, environment and thought process.

i fitted, at last count, 15 of them, including Lad’s Lad, Metrosexual, Mr secure and Chameleon. i’ve cheated before. as a teenager, i was hopeless with women and then one day, i was suddenly no longer weedy or geeky. every time a hot girl approached me, something inside me shrieked: ‘Go on, kiss her.’ it was purely because i could. i wasn’t mature enough to say ‘no’ then, but now, aged 30 and in a fiveyear relationship, i am. stewart interviewed 547 chaps in gym changing rooms and pubs, drawing inspiration from lab rats and cheating rats such as ‘Brian’, who s**gs around on business trips. While it’s interesting, it can also make your head spin with claim and counterclaim – rather like being in an infidelity break-up itself.

The Strangler Vine, the debut novel from historian Miranda Carter, is an adventure mystery set in india in 1837. it follows east india Company officer William avery on a mission with the mysterious Jeremiah Blake to find poet Xavier Mountstuart, who has gone missing while attempting to discover the secret of the thugs. this sinister cult of Kali-worshippers befriend travellers before strangling them. intelligent, extensively researched and packed with period detail, the book evokes both the attitudes of the British colonials and the india of the period. after a good start it flatlines a bit, not quite matching up to its initial premise as a fast-paced adventure mystery, but it’s an imaginative read.

Most men are not wired to cheat, though, says psychologist dr Karen sherman. ‘Circumstances at home could be difficult and they could end up sharing many hours with a coworker who happens to be female,’ she says. ‘Other explanations include feeling inadequate so the affair fulfils a sense of neediness and this fantasy situation means he feels less diminished than he feels at home.’ stewart also recounts six types of ‘appealing’ men who are surrounded by the same insecurities as their peers, but are not as afflicted by them. Ladies, you simply need to know what type to look out for. Why Men Really Cheat by Martyn Stewart (Troubador) is out now.

Katharine Grant has written many titles for children but Sedition, her first adult novel, is a sly, witty, deliciously knowing treat set in late 18th-century london, with a backdrop of the social turmoil provoked by the French Revolution. a group of City gentlemen plot to make their not-so-gorgeous daughters marriageable by engaging a Frenchman to teach them to play the new-fangled pianoforte for a concert. a parallel plotline sees the piano teacher attempt to have his wicked way with each of the girls. the relationship between disfigured annie, daughter of the piano dealer, and alethea, the seditious element among the five women, is the most intriguing development in this fascinating debut.

To The Pines by Tom Abbott i’m a new convert to the e-reader but one advantage is the near limitless access to self-published works. it’s a risk, of course, but to the Pines is a brave and powerful work by an assured writer. set in Prohibitionera east tennessee, this menacing tale has echoes of Faulkner. A Is For Angelica by Iain Broome this is a brilliant, dark comedy, with beautiful moments of pathos. it concerns the daily life of Gordon Kingdom, a rather fussy and repressed little man who we cannot help but like. Gordon has a problem at home that he can’t quite face – so he looks outwards, spying on his neighbours, keeping meticulous notes. never again will i see a twitching curtain in quite the same way. Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut i’m not sure how i left this one for so long – it had been recommended to me more times than i could count. Vonnegut’s classic semiautobiographical take on World War ii and the Dresden bombings is a satirical masterpiece. and with aliens, too. For my money – it’s the perfect novel. England must ‘deliver goods’ in Paris opener

RÁS ROuTE’S Mix Of cLiMbS AnD fLAT TO SuiT ALL-ROunDERS THE An Post Rás 2014 route was announced yesterday, comprising eight challenging stages over 1,260 kilometres and 36 categorised climbs. The 2014 edition of the race will travel anticlockwise around Ireland, beginning in Dunboyne on Sunday, May 18, and featuring stage end finishes in Roscommon, Lisdoonvarna, Charleville, Cahirciveen, Clonakilty, Carrick on Suir, Baltinglass and Skerries. The race profile strikes a balance between flat fast roads and tough climbs, with five category one mountains and five category two ascents to shake up the peloton. Race organiser Tony Campbell said: ‘It is more or less one for a good, hard strong rider, the strong all-rounder.’

Murray says pressure is on to get off the bench

by DAnny HOgAn

Conor Murray insists there is still a fierce battle for Ireland’s rBS Six nations scrum-half berth, despite Eoin reddan’s calf strain. Leinster half-back reddan is rated ‘highly doubtful’ for Ireland’s championship opener against Scotland in Dublin on Sunday by team manager Michael Kearney. Ireland boss Joe Schmidt has recalled Leinster scrum-half Isaac Boss into his squad, and also has Connacht’s Kieran Marmion available if required.

against Scotland. We’d like to think we know a bit about him, but that doesn’t make it any easier to stop him so we’ve got to be focused.’ Cardiff’s Munster-bound loose forward robin Copeland has kept his place in Ireland’s training squad after impressing in last weekend’s 14-8 Wolfhounds victory over England Saxons at Kingsholm. Murray hailed the back-rower as a good signing for Munster for next term, but also someone who could force his way into Six nations action this term. Head coach Schmidt is expected to

‘There are three or four players vying for each position, so I’m just trying to look after my corner’ Should reddan miss out, Murray will be expected to start on Sunday, but the Munster half-back rejected any notion of an easy passage into the number nine shirt. Scotching talk reddan’s injury would clear the way for him to start, Murray said: ‘no, definitely not, it’s exactly the same pressure as before. ‘Bossy’s there and Kieran Marmion is knocking around as well, so I’m just trying to focus on my own game and make sure I’m as sharp as I can be so I’m ready to go if I get the nod. ‘There are three or four players vying for each position, so I’m just trying to look after my own corner and make sure I can give everything I can.’ Murray expects Scotland counterpart Greig Laidlaw to set the tempo for Scott Johnson’s side in Dublin. admitting Ireland must shut down the Edinburgh playmaker and goal-kicker, Murray said: ‘I rate him highly as a player, he’s the focal point of their team, he drives a lot of their plays. ‘I’ve played against him quite a bit against Edinburgh and a couple of times

start Chris Henry at openside flanker in place of the injured Sean o’Brien. That frees up a loose forward slot on the bench, and Murray sees no reason why Copeland cannot fit that bill. ‘I’ve had a few chats to him since he’s been in camp,’ said Murray. ‘He’s picked up three man-of-the-match awards for Cardiff in the Heineken Cup group stages which is unbelievable. ‘and up close he’s a real athlete, a powerful player and he seems to be a natural footballer. It’s a good signing for Munster.’ Murray admitted Ireland have pored over their last-gasp 24-22 defeat to new Zealand from november in analysis, in a bid to stamp out little errors that cost them victory in cruel fashion. Keen not to linger on that all Blacks epic, the 24-year-old British Lion said: ‘That consistency element has definitely been a topic of discussion for a long time in our camp now. We’ve looked at that game in detail, identified areas where we could have improved, and we’ve got to take that forward now.’

CHrIS roBSHaW says England have to hit the ground running against France in Paris on Saturday in their Six nations opener. Just 20 games remain until next year’s World Cup on English soil and while uncapped duo Jack nowell and Luther Burrell will be blooded this weekend, England captain robshaw feels the time for rebuilding is over. Two years ago, Stuart Lancaster was only an interim head coach as England took a dramatic 24-22 win at the Stade de France. robshaw insists this weekend’s result will carry far greater significance. ‘There is more pressure on us this time and we expect from each other,’ he said.

Priestland’s not rushing future plans SCARLETS flyhalf Rhys Priestland admits he does not know where he will playing rugby next season. The 27-yearold is thought to be one of the current Wales internationals offered contracts. Captain Sam Warburton has signed a three-year deal with the Welsh Rugby Union but Priestland (pictured), who reclaims the No.10 shirt for Saturday’s Six Nations opener with Italy, is keeping his options open. ‘I don’t know all the facts so it’s hard to make a fully informed decision,’ he said. ‘I have the Six Nations to concentrate on, so I can take my mind off the situation. ‘I think it would be better if I stayed in Wales but nothing is set in stone yet.’

Scotland all set to go the whole Hogg High standards: Conor Murray says it won’t be a shoe-in if he’s called up for Ireland’s Six Nation’s clash with Scotland Picture: inPho

SCOTLAND head coach Scott Johnson believes full-back Stuart Hogg has timed his return to form perfectly as the Dark Blues gear up for their Six Nations opener against Ireland. Glasgow back Hogg makes his first appearance for the Scots since last year’s competition in Dublin on Sunday. Johnson said: ‘Some people take a while after a Lions tour to get back in the swing of things. Stuart has taken a wee while to find his feet. He had time off and has come back into form. He’s buoyed by that and so are we.’

On the few occasions Chelsea did breach the Hammers defence, they found keeper Adrian in inspired form, particularly in stoppage time. But more than anything, this performance serves to confirm manager Jose Mourinho’s view Chelsea will not win this season’s Premier League. Oscar saw a shot inside the first ten minutes tipped onto the bar by Adrian but after that Chelsea’s frustration grew as they were met by a wall of defence. It wasn’t until the closing stages of the half that the West Ham keeper was tested again, this time making a fine save to keep out John Terry. Sexton admits he nearly threw in the towel It’s a Knockout: Johnny Sexton in training ahead of the Six Nations bout against Scotland

Johnny Sexton admitted he has felt like quitting Racing Metro and returning to Ireland since his summer move from Leinster. the Ireland fly-half is settling into the French lifestyle now though, and hopes Racing will ration his playing time more conservatively than in a hectic autumn. Ireland opens its RBS Six nations test hosting Scotland in Dublin on Sunday,

with Sexton due to lead the backline. Despite his big-money move to France last summer, Sexton hailed the IRFU for securing Jamie heaslip and Sean o’Brien on new contracts. Munster’s Paul o’Connell and Keith earls and Ulster hooker Rory Best also signed new IRFU deals, spurning big money in France. Sexton revealed his Ireland team-mates

sought his advice about a France move, but admitted he was pleased to see the IRFU tie them down. ‘I think it’s great they’re staying, the IRFU … they’ve really stepped up to the plate,’ he said. ‘I think it’s important for Irish rugby that guys stay.
