Botched getaway scuppered raid by AoiFe Nic ArdghAil
TWO DUBLIN drug addicts who couldn’t start their getaway car after robbing an Xtra-vision store have escaped jail. Derek Cunningham, 39, and Gavin Flanagan, 32, both of Fortlawn Avenue, Blanchardstown, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to the robbery on January 27, 2013. The court heard the two robbers entered wearing hats and scarves to hide their identities. Cunningham had what the cashier thought was a gun, but what was later revealed to have been a hammer wrapped in a T-shirt. The men demanded money, iPads and iPhones, but the male cashier told them the shop was low on stock, so the men filled their bags with other electrical items such as Xboxes, tablets and USB sticks. Cunningham ran out of the Ongar shop to place the stolen items in the car, but couldn’t get it started and ran off on foot. A few minutes later, Flanagan also fled when he couldn’t find the car keys. Gardaí found the €4,458 worth of stolen items and €300 cash in the car, which had red tape coloured over with black marker to change the registration. Gardaí spotted a man matching Flanagan’s description exit the village bookies a short time after the robbery and when they asked for his name, he replied: ‘Mr Flanagan’. Cunningham was found hiding in shrubbery close to the scene. Sentencing, Mr Justice Raymond Groarke said that though this was ‘ostensibly an armed robbery’ its execution was poor. He gave Flanagan a two-year suspended sentence and Cunningham a three-year suspended sentence for carrying the weapon.

Well, they are at least cuter than sharks... by HAyDEn SMiTH ANYONE who managed to sit through the film Sharknado will know about the damage caused by creatures deposited on land by a freak weather storm. So fans of the 2013 ‘so bad it’s good’ flick may have feared an admittedly less terrifying but nevetheless bizarre Sealnado apocalypse when dozens of the mammals appeared on beaches, promenades and even a garden after recent storms in Britain. But unlike the stars of Sharknado – where man-eating sharks are sent flying into flooded Los Angeles by a waterspout – these lost animals just want to be rescued. A total of 48 have been found in a confused state by staff from the Cornish Seal Sanctuary after being washed up on the shore by ferocious storms. Tamara Cooper, who works in the sanctuary’s hospital, said: ‘Some of the seals we have been able to release or relocate immediately, depending on how rough the waters have been.’ The rest will be kept at a sanctuary until the severe weather abates. ‘We have seen quite a few come in with broken jaws, which we assume is because they have been knocked around by the waves,’ Ms Cooper added. ‘Our biggest problem at the moment is the backlog we’ve got.’
All at sea: The seals have been sent ashore by the freak weather and will be looked after at the Cornish sanctuary until the storms calm down. Residents were stunned when they found one mammal in a garden Pictures: sWNs

Thousands still in the dark after power failure
Friday, February 14, 2014 METRO HERALD
by ED cARTy
UP TO 80,000 homes were left without power last night while a further 100,000 people were without safe drinking water in the wake of the ferocious Atlantic storm. As efforts continue to restore electricity to 115,000 homes and businesses, mostly across the south and west, Limerick County Council was forced to order a boil water notice. Meanwhile, electricity supply chiefs in ESB warned that repairing power cuts to major infrastructure such as water treatment plants were one of its top priorities. It also warned between 60,000 and 80,000 would face a second night without power as it focused efforts on high voltage cables, and said it could make no guarantees about when power would be restored to homes. The company said its crews were working through difficult conditions, with the focus on supplies in Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Wexford, Waterford, Clare and Laois. Such is the damage, 1,000 wooden poles, more than 250km of conductors and 400 transformers are needed to restore the electricity cable network. ‘In Cork and Kerry alone we have over 3,200 individual faults to get to’, a spokesman said. Fallen trees and timber also needed to be cleared from around 2,000 locations. Some 60,000 were without phone and broadband services.

Teen tried to bring drugs to jail hidden in Kinder eggs A DUBLIN youth who tried to smuggle drugs hidden inside Kinder eggs into Mountjoy Prison when he was visiting relatives has been given a six-month sentence The 17-year-old kept the ‘eggs’, which contained cannabis and tablets, between his buttocks but was detected during a random search, the court heard. Judge John O’Connor had given the teenager several chances to cooperate with the Probation Service and the youth had been ordered to go to drug abuse treatment and to an educational course. However, the latest probation report on the youth, accompanied by his parents and his lawyer, was found to be negative, and Judge O’Connor decided to finalise the case with a custodial sentence. The teen pleaded guilty to conveying drugs into a prison on October 31, 2012. The teenager had also pleaded guilty to assaulting a staff member at a juvenile detention centre in January, 2012. He had 13 prior criminal convictions, mostly for robberies.

Jail for sex with daughter, 15 Children’s hospital ‘open by 2018’ A DUBLIN man who had sex with his teenage daughter at a house party seven years ago has been jailed for six years. The now 22-year-old victim waived her right to anonymity so that her father, Andrew Durran, 41, can be named publicly. Durran fled the country in 2009 but was brought back to Ireland from Spain on a European Arrest Warrant in December 2012. The father-of-seven, with a previous address at
BON JOVI and Eminem drew the crowds there last summer, but this year the grounds of Slane Castle will be quiet, as Lord Henry Mountcharles said there will be no concert there in 2014. Previous visitors to Slane have included the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna. But Lord Mountcharles said work has begun on arranging shows for 2015. However, music fans won’t miss out as it was announced this week Elton John will be at The O2 in Dublin on December 9 and Bob Dylan at the same venue on June 17.
Father with guns had ‘no regard’ for his children A FATHER of three who spun ‘a fantastical story’ to gardaí in relation to three guns and €3,000 of cannabis found in his home has been jailed for four years with 18 months suspended. Christopher Bergin, 28, from Tulip Court, Darndale, claimed he had been jogging in a local park when he overheard two teenagers discussing rifles and a shotgun for sale and returned with €1,000 to buy them. Judge Mary Ellen Ring told Bergin he had ‘no regard’ for the risks posed to his young children living in the house.
The National Paediatric hospital, which will bring together the three existing children’s hospitals in Crumlin, Temple Street and Tallaght hospital, is expected to open its doors in 2018. Planning permission was previously rejected for a site at the Mater hospital, but the group is confident a potential site at St James’s hospital will be approved. eilish hardiman, CeO of the Children’s
hospital Board told Metro herald it was disappointing when permission was rejected for the Mater site, but the new location meets needs for planning – big enough for children’s and maternity hospitals and fits in with the local area plan – and clinical needs – adjacent to an adult hospital with 32 subspecialties at the James’s site. Clearing of the site has begun and plans are to be submitted to An Bord Pleanála this autumn.
€200,000 works begin on tower in Glasnevin MorE than 40 years after the suspected loyalist bombing of o’Connell Tower in Dublin’s Glasnevin Cemetery, works are to begin on reopening a panoramic viewing platform at the top of the monument. The rebuilding of a winding wooden staircase inside the pillar devoted to Daniel o’Connell – known as the The Liberator – is the latest step in renovation of the 168-foot landmark. It is expected to cost €200,000 and will re-establish the memorial as a major tourist attraction, offering spectacular views spanning from the Mourne Mountains to counties Meath and Wicklow, Ireland’s Eye and across the capital. John Green, chairman of the Glasnevin Trust, said the refurbishment was a long-standing dream come true. ‘The restoration of the stairs completes this task and will establish this iconic monument as one of the “must do” visitor sites in Dublin,’ he said. Funded by the public, o’Connell Tower was built between 1855 and 1869 to commemorate the Irish politi-
by bRiAn HuTTOn cal leader who secured emancipation for Catholics in the 19th century. Loyalists are believed to have been behind a 1971 bomb attack on the monument, apparently in reprisal for the bombing of Nelson’s Pillar – named after British naval hero Horatio Nelson – on o’Connell Street by republicans some years earlier. The 3ft-thick granite tower survived the blast, but the windows and stairs were blown out and it was closed to the public for safety reasons. Works on the crypt at the base of the tower, which houses o’Connell’s sarcophagus, were completed in 2009. This final phase of the office of Public Works-funded renovation is expected to be finished this october. ‘It was the foresight of Daniel o’Connell which forged Glasnevin Cemetery as a site of historical importance, so it is appropriate that, above all others, Glasnevin Trust should honour his memory,’ Mr Green said.

The court heard Durran had lost contact with his daughter from when she was aged ten until months before the crime, but met her in 2006. Durran went to a party in Mulhuddart, where he let his then 15-year-old daughter drink heavily. When she went upstairs feeling drunk he followed her, undressed her and had sex with her.

Mariah and Minaj in video war
Mariah Carey has sharpened her claws for her latest clash with Nicki Minaj, claiming she has ‘deleted’ the Super Bass singer from her life. She refused to even mention 31-year-old Minaj by name when she talked about their time together on American Idol last year. ‘I was a professional on that show and that’s all I have to say. I was
a complete professional,’ Carey, 44, said in a radio interview. But when a caller mentioned Minaj, Mimi quipped: ‘Who?’ Speaking about her backstage fights with Minaj, she said: ‘I don’t even remember what that was. That was a moment in my life that I’m just going to press delete.’ The warring pair are set to do battle
again by releasing singles and music videos at the same time. Carey delighted fans by revealing new song You’re Mine (Eternal), while Minaj has unleashed her own new tune, called Lookin Ass N****. Carey will release her album The Art Of Letting Go on May 6, while Minaj will release The Pink Print later this year.

Marius II may also be culled by a Danish zoo by cOn DOHERTy THOUSANDS unsuccessfully tried to save Marius, a healthy giraffe, from being culled by Copenhagen Zoo. Now, just days later, a second Danish zoo says one of its giraffes faces a similar fate. Its name? Er, Marius. Jyllands Park Zoo says the Marius who is alive – for now – may also have to die due to breeding rules. The seven-year-old (pictured) lives
with a younger pure-bred giraffe called Elmer. But a female is expected to join them this year, which could cause friction. Zoologist Jasper Moehring said: ‘The two males will fight, which could result in the death of one.’ Copenhagen Zoo incurred the
wrath of animal lovers by killing their Marius, even though 27,000 people signing a petition against it. Although Mr Moehring says Jyllands Park is trying to rehome Marius II, he insists the move must not affect the genetic make-up of other giraffes. 60 seconds Stormbreaker’s ALEx PETTyfER, 23, is the sexy star of Endless Love – the romantic film to go really soppy over this Valentine’s weekend
Happy Valentine’s Day, Alex. Do you love or hate this auspicious day? If I
have someone I love on Valentine’s Day, then I love Valentine’s Day. If I don’t, then I am miserable. Someone I was dating once took me to Disneyland in California on Valentine’s Day. I had organised lots of things myself but she told me she’d arranged a surprise and I realised she’d get much more enjoyment out of surprising me than if I insisted on doing what I’d planned. It turned out nothing I had planned was anywhere near as good as Disneyland, so she won.
Would you call yourself a romantic? Yes, of course. Who
would turn around and say they’re not romantic? But the hardest thing about love is to be vulnerable and reveal yourself. And a lot of people can’t really deal with the after-effects of that, if something does go wrong.
The film is set around the time of the characters’ high-school graduation – you left school at 15. Do you feel you missed out on anything? I never felt like I
missed out in terms of school. I f***ing hated school, so leaving at 15 was the biggest thrill for me. All of the mates who I am still in contact with are just leaving college now. I have had my ups and downs with the work that I do, like anyone does in any job, but I can’t imagine just coming out of college now and having to get a job for the first time and think about what to do with my life.
Your character, David, has had a pretty wild past. Is there anything of you in him? Nah, I am a
very grounded, normal guy. I do my work and then I go back home and race cars and hang out with all my mates. I have never got drunk or taken drugs – I am I never felt like I not going to be getting wasted in missed out in terms a club. Family is of school. I f***ing very important to me too. I have hated it, so leaving always wanted a at 15 was a big family and children at a young age. thrill for me
Do you get a lot of attention from female fans now you’re a grown-up sex symbol? Am I a grown-up sex symbol now? I don’t think I am. I do get fan mail from girls but it’s mainly gifts and them asking me to sign stuff.
“
What would be your perfect first date? I like that whole movie
and dinner thing. I think it’s magical, taking someone to the movies on a first date. There isn’t really much conversation that goes on but there are all those feelings there. I can think of about five dates that I have been on when I have gone to see the movie and I can’t remember what I was watching because I was so excited, looking across at the person and having all those new feelings.
ALEX PETTYFER
GABRIELLA WILDE
I N C I N E M A S T O D AY
You star opposite fellow Brit Gabriella Wilde in your new film, Endless Love, and you both used to model for Burberry – is there a connection? I
think it’s just a coincidence. Gaby was cast long before me and I didn’t know her previously. Before I met her, I didn’t know how the movie was going to work. Her character is a real outsider and doesn’t have many friends. I just thought: Gaby is so beautiful, how will people not think she would be the most popular girl in school? She has this amazing quality to her: she is so beautiful but she has this real naive awkwardness to her. I hate saying this but it’s bit like Bambi.
Would you ever want to go back to modelling? I love modelling and diving into the fashion world because I am the most unfashionable man you can imagine. Today, I am wearing hobo jeans – as in, I got them from a hobo. When I was a kid, mum wanted me to experiment with everything, so she took me to football practice, to rugby, tennis, swimming, racing cars – and she took me to modelling castings. She gave me the variety of experiences to see what I wanted to do.
Were you nervous about playing a novice stripper in Magic Mike? Of course. I went to some
male strip clubs in Hollywood to see how they worked, which was a funny experience. When you work on a movie like that, everyone is working hard to try to get the best body but you really can’t be better than Matthew McConaughey or Joe Mangianello, who, by the way, is 6ft 6in; I still don’t understand how he has the body he has. And Matthew has the body of a 23-year-old.

Only Fools colleagues say farewell to Trigger STARS of Only Fools And Horses joined fellow actors and figures from sport to pay tribute to actor Roger Lloyd-Pack yesterday. Sir David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst and John Challis were among those at the funeral of the 69-year-old, best known for playing Trigger (below) in the classic BBC sitcom. Emily, his actress daughter, and widow Jehane Markham greeted mourners as Lloyd-Pack’s coffin was brought to the church in a distinctive pink hearse. One of the actor’s hats was placed on the wicker coffin. ‘It was a magnificent funeral for a wonderful

Six-foot artwork of Bacon’s lover sells for €51million by kATiE wiLSOn A MASTERPIECE by Francis Bacon has become the most valuable piece of artwork ever sold by auction house Christie’s in Europe after going under the hammer for £42.2million (€51m). The 6ft-tall canvas of Bacon’s former lover and muse George Dyer had been estimated to sell for around €34million, but was bought for one and a half times that, by an anonymous phone buyer. Dyer died of an overdose in Paris two days before the painting was displayed at Bacon’s first major retrospective at the Grand Palais in 1971. The piece, called George Dyer Talking, is the most significant large-scale portrait of Dyer to be offered at auction in more than a decade. A depiction of Mickey Mouse by artist Damien Hirst was also auctioned off for €1.1m with all the proceeds going to UK children’s charity Kids Company. Hirst’s work, which represents the figure of the Disney character with a series of large circles, trebled pre-sale estimates of €360,000. Kids Company provides support to vulnerable British inner-city children and after the auction its founder Camila Batmanghelidjh said: ‘Some child-like magic happened tonight. In reality, Mickey came to the rescue of some of the most vulnerable children. This money will change lives.’ The works were auctioned off as part of Christie’s Post War And Contemporary Art evening auction which takes place in London. Also included in the sale was a Jeff Koons sculpture depicting a cracked egg. The most expensive of Bacon’s work was his triptych of Lucian Freud which sold for €103m at Christie’s New York

Children given the right to die BELGIAn politicians have voted to extend the country’s euthanasia law to children under 18. The law empowers children with terminal ailments who are in great pain to request to be put to death if their parents agree and a psychiatrist or psychologist find they are conscious of what their choice signifies. Belgium’s euthanasia law, passed in 2002, previously applied only to legal adults.

Father beats son to death with bat at cricket practice Victim: Luke Batty, 11, with his mother Rosie PICTURE: ENTERPRISE
Mummy, it’s a civil servant... ARCHAEOLOGISTS stumbled across the 3,600-year-old mummy of a government officer during a routine dig. The team found the remains of a high-ranking official inside a tomb in Luxor, Egypt. His sarcophagus was well preserved and decorated with hieroglyphs and inscriptions of birds’ feathers. The Spanish and Egyptian archaeologists aim to discover his identity.
A MENTALLY ill father beat his 11-year-old son to death with a bat during cricket practice. Greg Anderson was playing with his son, Luke Batty, shortly before attacking him with the bat and a knife in front of friends and family, including the boy’s mother. The 54-year-old, who had a history of violent and threatening behaviour, turned on police officers with the knife, before being shot in the chest by a marksman. Anderson, who had made no attempt to leave the scene after the attack, died later in hospital. He may have been attempting ‘suicide by cop’, police in Australia have suggested. Luke’s British-born mother, Rosie, paid an emotional tribute to her ‘effervescent and funny’ son. She said: ‘He felt for his dad, he knew his dad was in a sad place.’ The incident happened at a cricket ground in Melbourne. It was one of the few places where Luke was allowed to have contact with his father because of

a restraining order. The boy had pleaded with his mother for ‘a few more minutes with my dad’ because he did not see him often. Anderson was seen bowling a few balls at his son as the practice session was winding down before he launched his attack. Police described the boy’s injuries as ‘quite brutal’ and said it was a ‘calculated act that would have occurred at some point’. In an emotional statement, Ms Batty, who emigrated from the UK 20 years ago, said: ‘How do I feel? Shock, tragedy, loss, needing support from friends and family coming over from England.’ However, she defended her expartner saying he had had mental health problems for 20 years. She added: ‘He loved his son. Everyone that’s involved with children would know that whatever action they take is not because they don’t love them. ‘No-one loved Luke more than Greg. No-one loved Luke more than me. We both loved him.’

Man injured in Sochi bobsled collision OLYMPIC officials are trying to determine why a worker on the bobsled track at the Sochi Games was in the path of a speeding sled that crashed into him, causing leg injuries. A forerunning sled sent down the track to make sure conditions were suitable for two-man training crashed into the worker yesterday at the Sanki Sliding Center. The unidentified man was airlifted to a nearby hospital,
with some reports saying he had a broken leg and others saying both legs were fractured. A subsequent investigation centred on suspicions that the man was using a motorised air blower and may not have been able to hear any announcement. It was also unclear how fast the sled was going but any sled at that area of the track would generate massive force. Bobsled training was delayed by about 35 minutes.

It’s not our fault violent games are given to youngsters
I

n response to your article on the effect of Grant Theft Auto on young people. First of all, I don’t like the Grand Theft Auto franchise. They give video games in general a bad reputation, they have nothing of artistic merit, and I find them morally objectionable. However, I would point out that these games are clearly labelled as being for adults, not children, and the company that makes them has an adult audience in mind. Therefore, the fault lies not with them, but with retailers for not enforcing age restrictions, and parents for not paying attention to age restrictions. As one example, when I was in one city centre games shop, I saw a woman buying Call Of Duty Black Ops for her son, who seemed to be about eight or nine. To put this in context, Black Ops is an 18cert game in which the player takes part in the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Vietnam War, and attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro. Despite this, the parent bought the game for her child, and the employee – despite it being plainly obvious that the game was intended for the child – sold it with no objections. Of course I agree that children should not be exposed to particular video games, just as
there are films, novels and comic books children shouldn’t be exposed to. However, adults do play video games too, and it would be wrong not to expect game companies to cater to that demographic. Therefore, don’t blame game companies for the products they make. Blame parents and retail employees who don’t pay attention to age certificates. Mature Gamer ■ Loving that #DearDolly and @MetroHnews shares my view on nicole Scherzinger’s ‘career’ LOL. @Massomullen ■ I was recently made aware of the idiotically pathetic craze, neknominate, sweeping through Facebook. There have already been several deaths due to the craze, which is truly a mark of how Facebook is influencing people by using peer pressure to commit the most worrying acts of madness. There are a number of young people aged between 13 and 30 who seem unable to live in the real world. Facebook runs their life and guides their ideas and ideals. Letting these people post evidence of this dangerous and moronic behaviour goes to prove that society is failing. It’s become a world where all that is bad can flourish without ever really being checked. Gibson

The eternal questions Dublin-born director Brendan Muldowney continues his obsession with the loner’s search for meaning in his latest film, writes Pavel Barter
W
hen Brendan Muldowney’s debut feature premiered at the Galway Film Festival in 2009, the writer-director introduced the film with an overwhelming sense of guilt. Savage, a brutal revenge thriller, was designed to shock and upset. Muldowney mumbled a few words, then quickly exited the stage. During the screening, one audience member fainted; another screamed uncontrollably. Presenting Love eternal at the same festival last year, he had no anxiety whatsoever. When you hear the pitch, this might come as a surprise.
Love eternal is the story of Ian harding (Robert de hoog), a self-proclaimed ‘defective human being’. After the death of his father, harding locks himself in his room for ten years, emerging only after his mother dies. his only solace? Dead people. During the story, he bonds with a number of different cadavers, only to grow disillusioned when they decay. When he encounters grieving mother naomi (Pollyanna McIntosh), could our strange protagonist finally be redeemed?

cover story
➔
Love Eternal, which is being screened as part of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, is not exactly a romcom. But neither is it a gruelling, or farcical, exercise in taboo. Instead, the Dublin-born film-maker approaches a difficult subject with sensitivity and a poetic sensibility. ‘It was a tough pitch but the material showed there was more going on to the story,’ contends Muldowney. The director adapted the screenplay from In Love With The Dead, a story by Japanese author Kei Oishi (who wrote the novelisation for The Grudge). ‘This didn’t seem to be a horror film. The book was pretty hardcore, but you didn’t hate the character or see him as a monster. There was something about it that didn’t scream exploitation. I wanted to create a character that does monstrous things, yet you have empathy for him.’
“You’re concentrating on telling a story, from the moment you get up to the moment you sleep” In the film, Harding is transfixed with patterns of infinity and the endless scope of the universe. Cinematographer Tom Comerford’s work reflects this. In dealing with the subject of death, Muldowney, whose next film will be about 13th Century monks, wanted to explore spirituality and the concept of an afterlife. ‘You can’t be sure of anything in life – it’s almost arrogant to say you’re atheist. While writing [Love Eternal], I was reading a Stephen Hawking book. I’ve always been fascinated by the size of the universe. What’s at the end of the universe? A wall? That book was the nearest I came in years to spiritual peace. There was a line in the film, where the character says, ‘We are all insects. What we
Walk on the wild side: Naomi (Pollyanna McIntosh and Ian (Robert de Hoog) in Muldowney’s edgy Love Eternal
think defines us – emotions, consciousness, communication – when seen from afar is nothing more than the noisy clacking of insect wings’. That was where this character was coming from at the start. I wanted him to eventually realise we are not insects, but part of a greater mystery.’ Shot in Dublin, Savage depicted an urban hellhole where every corner posed a threat to the film’s traumatised protagonist. Love Eternal, on the other hand, is bleached with blossoms, sunlight, trees and nature: a dark fairy-tale. Like Muldowney’s first feature, it feels slightly removed from reality. The director sees similarities in the film-making process. While making the film in Cork and Luxembourg, de Hoog became increasingly insular. ‘He went a bit method and openly admits this. He feels he wasn’t a nice person. I thought he was fine – just a bit quiet. He’d go
off to his caravan and not talk to anyone.’ As for Muldowney? ‘You’re concentrating on telling a story, from the moment you get up to the moment you sleep. It’s an adventure where nothing else matters. Real life disappears.’
T
HE 44-year-old spent ten years making short films before Savage. These included religious fable The Message (2000) and ghost story The Ten Steps (2004). Savage tells the story of Paul Graynor (Darren Healy), the victim of an unprovoked attack, who transforms from paranoid victim to enraged aggressor. Muldowney was partly inspired by Bernhard Goetz, a man who turned vigilante on the New York subway in 1984. ‘Ireland had our own Goetz. Padraig Nally, a farmer in the west, was robbed and took to sitting in his shed with a shotgun. He killed an intruder. In Savage, I wanted to explore

violence and whether it was ever acceptable. And to present violence as very unpalatable.’ Savage was brought to life by Healy’s superb, Ifta-nominated, performance. The subject matter and real life merged when the actor was convicted in 2010 for assaulting a man in a Dublin pub. Muldowney contends he writes films about loners – men trapped in their internal worlds – because it is easier than ensemble pieces. His preoccupation with death, existence, and the afterlife are unlikely to ever go away. ‘These are eternal questions,’ he says. The director promises to keep poking the wasp’s nest of edgy subjects, and illuminating what lies beneath. Love Eternal is being screened at Cineworld on Feb 18, 8.30pm. Plastic fantastic
THE Big RELEAsE
the lego movie (U) HHHHH
Step aside Toy Story. The Lego Movie may not have the most inspired of titles but Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (the writer/ directors of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs) have taken what could have been a 100minute advert and turned it into a dizzyingly fast, continually surprising, deftly satirical delight. It’s set in a parallel universe where everything is built out of Lego, including the flames and the splashes of water: the animators use digital Lego bricks rather than the real McCoy but you’d never know. The happiest denizen of this moulded-plastic world is Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt, aka Andy from Parks And Recreation), an enthusiastically conformist construction worker who spends all day assembling identical skyscrapers while
singing his favourite song, Everything Is Awesome. But his life changes in a distinctly Matrix-like fashion when a kung fu-kicking rebel (Elizabeth Banks) and a dotty wizard (Morgan Freeman) tell him he is the one figurine who is fated to defeat the nefarious President Business (Will Ferrell). Before Emmet – or the viewer – has time to ask what they’re talking about, he’s whisked off on a delirious adventure that takes him out of his home city, into the Wild West, under the sea and beyond. As he teams up with Lego versions of Han Solo and Batman (a hilariously gruff Will Arnett), the action keeps getting bigger and more ludicrous, so it’s something of a miracle when a poignant last-minute twist makes sense of it all. As joyously random as The Lego Movie might appear, the many disparate pieces click together as snugly as… well, you know what. Nicholas Barber
The only trick this animated marvel misses was not being released in time for the Oscar nominations – best animated feature would have been a shoo-in. Essential viewing.

Got a date for Valentine’s Day? Well how about asking your computer out? That’s the brilliant, almost-believable scenario at the heart of this genius ‘Boy meets Siri’ sci-fi/romance from the director of Being John Malkovich. Theodore Twombly (played by Joaquin Phoenix, left, unfanciable in tweedy, Simon Cowellwaisted trousers and a non-hipster moustache) is a lonely, heartsick, almost divorcee who, one day, installs a new Artificially Intelligent computer operating system called Samantha (irresistibly voiced by Scarlett Johansson, who deserves to be the first best actress nominee never to actually appear on screen) and the two form a relationship.
She laughs at his jokes, they have great virtual sex and soon he is even calling her his girlfriend, which, in the very near future, suddenly doesn’t seem that socially improbable. Even, perhaps, unsettlingly enviable. An offbeat best film Oscar nominee and winner of a Golden Globe for best screenplay, Her is fizziest at its funniest. As the narrative longeurs into melancholy indulgence – too many dust motes dancing dreamily in sunlight – you realise Twombly is not that captivating a character. Yet it’s still an inspired, playful, erotic and gently tender look at our technology co-dependence, relationships and modern loneliness that is, undoubtedly, the love story of 2014. it’s not quite the Full monty but this toe-tapping British hit-inwaiting still totally tickles your feel-good buttons. ‘Fat man dances’ is the no-brainer comedy pitch for a plotted-by-numbers romcom that sees nick Frost (the one who’s not simon Pegg in Hot Fuzz and shaun of the Dead) overcome his childhood bullying to reconnect with his secret love of salsa (dance, not dip). He does so to impress his fit new boss (rashida Jones), an amateur latin dancer, who is otherwise out of his league. ‘it’s like a butterfly going out with a parsnip,’ he sighs, in the film’s sweetest line. the sight of Frost, moobs ashimmying, of course provides belly laughs, but what warms the cockles is his own big-hearted, natural screen presence. Clichéd moments aside, you can’t help but be won over. Li-Z

Wow – a ‘hilarious comedy’ that actually is hilarious. Stockroom worker Andy’s (Steve Carell) life, though otherwise complete (he collects rare action figures and makes a perfect sandwich), is missing something. His colleagues, relieved to find he’s not a serial killer, embark on a mission to get him laid. Cue the usual set-pieces as chums push him at drunken women and tell him to ‘act like David Caruso in Jade’. Then Catherine Keener comes a-knocking and it all turns from a marvellously un-PC humiliation fest to bizarre romcom. Up there with Dodgeball until it loses its rhythm halfway through, this surprisingly sweet tale benefits from having its flaws masked by the small screen. Who cares if the ending should have come sooner when you’re laughing so much it hurts?

MUSIcAL REVIEW Evita HHHHI Bob Thomson’s and Bill Kenwright’s staging of Evita – one of the biggest of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smashiest hits – is an impressively slick affair, with the monumental sets and military precision you expect from a touring production of this scale. And you can’t but be impressed by the ambition of the original project: to relay in song Eva Duarte’s journey from smalltown girl to the queen of hearts in a South American dictatorship, without submitting to hagiography. It can’t be an easy job to allude to the complexities of Peronist politics and economic reform in song lyrics that remain catchy, but Lloyd Webber pulls it off. The sheer variety of the score is quite entertaining in itself and deftly handled in this production: one second it’s jazz, the next it’s full-on opera, then a quick tango, then sandblasting rock. However, Marti Pellow, as the Che Guevera-channelling narrator is disappointing. His breathy and wavering voice – he sounds like an asphyxiating Elvis – is quite grating, and not in the same league as his fellow cast members. The contrast was most marked when Che introduces a scene featuring the tango singer Magaldi, played by Nic Gibney – and Gibney then proceeds to blow the house away with his stunning and beautiful rendition of On This Night Of A Thousand Stars. Madalena Alberto is excellent as Evita, handling the most famous number, Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, with aplomb. The ensemble singing is superb, and the dancing (with extra helpings of tango) very enjoyable. Even if Lloyd Webber isn’t your thing, this huge, complex and polished production is a spectacle well worth catching. With ghetto house labels like Dance Mania back in the spotlight thanks to the release of a compilation on Strut, it’s also worth noting that juke, the modern articulation of this most primal dance styles has also grown in popularity. This is thanks to labels like Mike Paradinas’ Planet Mu label showcasing the work of Chicago producers such as DJ Rashad (pictured). The US producer has put out a series of releases for Planet Mu, Honest Jon’s and Hyperdub, with last year’s I Don’t Give A F**k release winning him widespread acclaim. Jeremy Underground Paris & Bleak
With releases on Deeply Rooted House, Delsin and Secretsundaze, it’s fair to say that Bleak, aka Santiago Naura’s music, effortlessly traverses the boundaries between US house and deep techno. Meanwhile, Jeremy Underground Paris, who is on the same bill, has proven to be an impressive curator of classic house. The French DJ runs the My Love Is Underground label, which has succeeded in tracking down and re-releasing a series of long forgotten house records – no mean feat in the internet age. GIG… Lisa O’Neill
In theory, Cavan’s Lisa O’Neill should be the worst prospect ever – another starcrossed folkie touting a bellyful of angst (and garnering a predictable Choice Music Prize nomination). Actually, she’s a deeply compelling talent, whose anguished dirges are strewn with a gothic melodrama which, for all the cobwebs and shadows, come on as weirdly refreshing. Always on first name terms with quirkiness for her second LP, Same Cloth Or Not, she ratchets the out-of-whack sensibility to frankly irresistible levels, delivering her songs in a skewed croon somewhere between Björk and Tori Amos (with PJ Harvey grappling with acoustic guitars in the background). Some commentators have tried to fetishize the supposedly ‘rural’ qualities of her writing – which, condescension, aside – rather misses the point. It isn’t that O’Neill, a Liffey-side transplant of a good decade standing, doesn’t feel adrift in the ‘big’ city. It’s that, with an artistic world view such as hers, she will inevitably be woozily detached regardless of surroundings. She’s a skewed presence bobbing in a swell of orthodoxy – and her appeal is surely bound up with that powerful whiff of outsiderdom. Eamon de Paor Tomorrow, Whelan’s, 25 Wexford Street D2, 8pm, €15. Listen up. The Career Zoo is taking place in the Convention Centre in Dublin tomorrow. The marketing tagline? ‘Meet Your Future’. I like it. The event brings together under one roof a host of employers currently hiring. An interesting addition this year is Tech Town, a dedicated space showcasing Irish technology and the career opportunities on offer in this growth sector. Earlier this week I spoke with Brian Ó hOisín, director of The Career Zoo. He told me the line-up of career talks and discussions is their best yet. Why bother going? Well, here you have some of Ireland’s premier companies, large, medium and small, all arriving in a hiring state of mind. Going there will give you an opportunity to get visible and network. Make it your business to attend free workshops and have career discussions. Window shopping should only be for those vaguely contemplating a change, not those seriously looking for work. So use the Career Zoo website to identify the people you want to approach. In a nice but assertive way, introduce yourself. Know in advance what they do and how your skills fit. Converse knowledgeably with them at their stand. Even give them a carefully-tailored CV. Get your story straight and be ready to ‘act the part’. Remember, first impressions do count and you will be remembered if you stand out for the wrong reasons. Come dressed in semiconservative clothes. See you there! Career coach Jane Downes is the author of The Career Book (thecareerbook.ie) and principal coach of Clearview Coaching Group, clearviewcoachgroup.com. by MARTin sAnTA BANKS that badly fail this year’s European health checks will have to be closed down, the head of the eurozone finance ministers group has said. The European Central Bank will conduct an Asset Quality Review later this year to assess the health of 130 large banks in the 18 countries that share the euro before it takes over as their supervisor in November. ‘I was very happy about what Daniele Nouy said – that if banks come out in a very bad shape we will simply have to close them down,’ Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem said. Nouy will head the eurozone’s new banking watchdog housed within the ECB. ‘We are going to do it the tough way. And that is the signal all of us need – the banks needed to get that signal, the financial markets need that signal and the citizens in Europe need to get that signal,’ he said. The review is part of preparations to set up a banking union in which the ECB would supervise all banks. Policymakers believe that will unclog credit to the economy and boost growth. It would also entail a mechanism to shut failing lenders and a joint pool of money to cover the cost. Completing banking union depends on reaching an agreement between the European Parliament and eurozone governments on who will decide if a bank is to be closed and who should foot the bill.

fitzgerald to miss out on valuable game time by gARETH MAkiM
Luke FitzgeraLd’s hopes of forcing his way back into the ireland side for next weekend’s six Nations battle with england in twickenham have suffered a fresh blow after he missed the cut for Leinster’s Pro12 game against dragons tonight. it means further frustration for the 26-year-old wing, whose fine form marked him out as a potential key contributor in Joe schmidt’s first championship. a groin problem picked up a month ago has left him sitting on the sidelines as ireland opened with wins over scotland and Wales, and despite positive noises emanating from the Leinster camp this week he will miss out on a valuable run-out against the Welsh region. there is better news for eoin reddan, though, as he has overcome a calf strain to start alongside ian Madigan at half-back, while coach Matt O’Connor has been able to name ireland’s reserve front row of Jack Mcgrath, sean Cronin and Martin Moore and also recall Fergus McFadden to the wing. With leaders Munster playing tomorrow, the defending champions can go top of the table with a win this evening, but seventh-placed dragons have proved a tougher nut to crack than in previous seasons. ‘the dragons have been brilliant this year; they’ve had some really big wins,’ said number eight Jordi Murphy. ‘they’re a very creative side, they score tries from nowhere and can really catch you on the break. ‘they might have one or two lads missing with Wales but not too many, so it’s going to be a big challenge.’

escaped blizzard conditions in his native Cork for sunnier climates as he joins his adopted family, the Wollongong Wizards in Australia. The world number 47 triathlete has a big year ahead of him with the Rio Olympic Qualification period opening on May 15. Keane is pleased with his preparation, saying: ‘When it comes to toughness there is nothing like a block of winter training in Ireland.’ His stint Down Under starts with the Elwood Oceania Cup in Melbourne on February 15, before he moves on to the Mooloolaba World Cup on March 15 and the World Triathlon Series. Schmidt: Twickenham threat is biggest challenge England at Twickenham poses a bigger challenge than France in Paris, according to Ireland boss Joe Schmidt. Head coach Schmidt rates Ireland’s Twickenham trip as their toughest test in this year’s Six nations. Ireland will fight for their first Triple Crown since their 2009 grand Slam on February 22. Victory over Stuart lancaster’s men would set up a potential grand Slam decider against France in Paris on March 15. Regardless of that scenario though, former leinster coach Schmidt believes England offer the tournament’s greatest threat, and after victories over Scotland and Wales, he is steeling his squad for more hard grind yet. ‘So far we’ve learned that it’s

always going to be tough, and we’ve had a little bit of luck go our way too,’ said Schmidt. ‘There are tougher games coming and probably the toughest of all coming next, at Twickenham against England.’ Ireland have spent their fallow week at a training camp in Clonmel, where tactician Schmidt has no doubt got to work in earnest on the England masterplan.
Adaptable: Schmidt will fit his approach to suit each game as it comes
Ireland dismantled Wales’ tactical approach in their comprehensive 26-3 victory in dublin, but Schmidt is happy to adapt his approach to fit each individual challenge and has made no secret of the fact he will do so again if required at Twickenham. after battling on through gale-force winds in Clonmel, a host of Ireland’s squad will be made available for club action this weekend. Jack Mcgrath, Sean Cronin and Martin Moore are now established as Ireland’s understudy front-row, but that trio will be back in leinster action against the dragons.
Eoin Reddan returns for leinster after injury, boosting Ireland’s scrum-half options for the England clash. Schmidt also remains hopeful Munster’s donnacha Ryan can boost his second row resources after dan Tuohy broke his arm against Wales. ‘I think those guys should be available post-injury. We’d be interested to see how Tommy O’donnell goes for Munster. ‘You’ve got to balance selection on form mostly. One of the difficult things of trying to grow the squad, if they are on great form, it’s hard to leave them out of the side. ‘So that’s their challenge, to keep performing and delivering, and it’s a challenge for the other guys to put in the best performances they can as well.’
Season kicks off in Kildare on Sunday cycLing The 2014 Irish cycling season
officially starts this Sunday in Monasterevin, Co Kildare. This is the third running of the event in remembrance of the late Ned Flanagan. Last seasons’ winner Barry Meehan is eager to retain the trophy, but the winner in 2012, Robin Kelly, is favoured to do the business. ‘I am looking forward to the task in hand,’ said Kelly. ‘Last year Barry won in fine style, making a forward move in the closing stages. I didn’t react to the threat. But it will be a different scenario on Sunday.’ Racing gets underway from the main street in Monasterevin at 11.30am and will make a 60km loop taking in Ballybrittas, Portlaoise, Ballyroan and Heath.

It’s win or bust time for United, says Tom by MATTHEW NASH
Tom Cleverley believes manchester United need to win every one of their remaining league games to stand any chance of salvaging their season. Wednesday’s goalless draw at Arsenal was creditable but not the victory David moyes’ men needed to re-ignite their campaign. The Premier league champions now sit 11 points off the fourth Champions league qualification spot and appear to simply have too much ground to make up in time to catch the top four. england midfielder Cleverley knows there is no way his team can afford to drop any more points in their battle to catch the top sides and believes only a 100 per cent record from their final 12 games will be good enough to give them any chance

Hoop dreams to go season unbeaten CELTIC manager Neil Lennon has set his team the target of going the whole Scottish Premiership season unbeaten. Celtic have gone 24 games unbeaten so far, winning their last 13, and Lennon wants to maintain the spark about their season despite the destiny of the title being a formality given their 21-point lead over aberdeen. Lennon, whose team host St Johnstone on Sunday, said: ‘The incentive now is to go unbeaten the rest of the season. That’s the target for them and to win the championship with a bit of style. It shows the consistency the players have shown.’

YOUNES Kaboul is confident Tottenham will be playing Champions League football next season if they maintain the form they showed at Newcastle. Spurs trounced the Magpies 4-0 on Wednesday night to stay hot on the heels of fourth-placed Liverpool. ‘We need games like that to be up there and if we perform like that in the future we are going to play in the Champions League next season,’ he told Spurs TV.

at all. ‘We need to win every game from now on,’ said the 24-year-old, who was dismayed by liverpool’s last-ditch 3-2 win at Fulham. ‘liverpool getting a last-minute winner is disappointing for us. our result isn’t the worst in the world but we need to start winning fast. ‘We showed we are resilient, that we are still fighting for every point, but unfortunately we have lost more ground on the teams around us so we have to really get our heads down and start winning quickly at Crystal Palace in ten days.’ Cleverley’s team-mate michael Carrick admitted United’s midfield have developed a thick skin over the years and are not fazed by the criticism they have faced this term. ‘We get stick all the time. We are used to it,’ he said. ‘I thought we did a good job against Arsenal, not just in midfield as a unit but as a team. ‘Their fans were getting frustrated. I thought we might have nicked one and made it a fantastic night.’

wasn’t good enough. For the first time we looked unconfident. Not sure what we were doing. lacked energy in certain areas. of course I am not happy,’ he added. ‘you expect life and limb on the football pitch, no matter what the scenario or scoreline. The players better get the message because they will be getting it loud and clear this week.’

Evra race claims all false, says ‘new’ Luis
D
Stat’s how to do it, Arsene
Luiz Suarez has reopened his row with Manchester united’s Patrice evra by claiming he has no regrets over the incident, which he described as ‘all false’. Suarez was disgraced when found guilty of racially abusing evra in 2011, but he now claims he only regrets two incidents in his career, both involving biting an opponent. The uruguayan said: ‘i’ve made only two mistakes in my career. My first was when i was playing for ajax and i bit an opponent. My second was when i bit [Chelsea’s Branislav] ivanovic]. ‘The case with evra was all false. i was accused without proof. But that’s in the past. ‘i have grown up. i have thought more about things before doing them. Now people in england can’t talk about me because i’m not doing anything wrong. They have to talk about me only as a footballer. i said i’m sorry [after the ivanovic bite] and that was all, end of story. ‘i’ve nothing else to regret. all the other things were like a movie that people in england believed.’
