Plane hunt delay Weather halts Indian Ocean search for objects spotted by satellite by Sharon MarriS BAD weather forced the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane to be put on hold last night after satellite images emerged showing what could be wreckage. Low cloud and rain halted the international operation in the southern Indian Ocean, hours after pictures showing two objects in the area were revealed. The potential debris was spotted 2,500km south-west of Perth, in Australia. One of the objects, highlighted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa), was 24m long. ‘It’s probably the best lead that we have right now,’ said Amsa’s John Young. Military aircraft from Australia, the US and New Zealand were sent to the scene yesterday. A Norwegian ship has also arrived to help while others, including Royal Navy survey ship HMS Echo, are on their way.
Possible debris: The satellite image
Operation: A plane from the Royal Australian Air Force takes part in the international search PIcture: AP The Boeing 777 vanished two weeks ago during a night flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. No trace of the aircraft or the 239 people on board has been found despite a huge search operation from central Asia to Australia. The new images were taken on Sunday but brought to the attention of Amsa only yesterday be-
cause of the ‘large volume of imagery being searched and the detailed process of analysis that followed’, it said. If the pictures are of flight MH370, they would suggest there was an on-board emergency and an attempt by the pilots to turn around. They may have fallen unconscious, leaving the plane on a
‘ghost flight’ until it ran out of fuel. Previous sightings of objects including oil slicks have turned out to be unconnected to the airliner. Mr Young warned the objects in the latest images could have fallen off container ships – a common occurrence in the region.

Shang-hai enough yet? 2,000ft is plenty... for now EVEN the loudest wolf-whistle is unlikely to make much of an impression here. But, six years after work began, cranes that helped build the 128-storey Shanghai Tower are coming down. Built on the site of a former golfing range, the 632m-tall building is the second tallest in the world after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. An army of construction workers has been able to scale the halfmile €1.9billion monolith in the world’s longest lift. Principal architect Jun Xia said it serves ‘as a stunning representation of our past,
our present and China’s boundless future’. But Shanghai’s pride may not last long – Hunan province is building an 838m tower.

WHEN Twitter launched in 2006, few knew much about it – and those who did were unsure how to use it. Today, it has 241million active users worldwide, posting, retweeting, and hashtagging all over the world. Presidents, royalty, sports heroes and A-listers have all got involved. To celebrate its eighth birthday today, Twitter is giving us a glimpse of the early years, with a tool that searches for each user’s first tweet. The messages range from mundane to bizarre. Major-winning golfer Rory McIlroy made his debut on the site in 2010 with the words: ‘Very windy at cog hill today! Only managed 5 holes this morning. Hopefully it will be a little better for the pro am tomorrow.’ Ireland rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll, also joining in 2010, said: ‘Finally I send my first tweet. Never was one for being a guinea pig. More to follow soon.’ But BOD joined a whole ten months before his wife, prolific tweeter Amy Huberman. The Stag actress debuted in October 2010 with the
by JOAnnE AHERn words: ‘brand new feathery fledgling!’ TV comedy writer Graham Linehan was an especially early adopter, joining the site in 2007. His first tweet: ‘Setting up my phone to work with twitter’ Footballer Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, made his debut on the site with the words: ‘Hi rio do u want picking up in the morning pal’? Presumably, the Manchester United and England striker had confused the site with a text-messaging service. Others’ first tweets include one by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the world wide web, criticising Twitter’s ‘confusing’ layout. David Levin, who helps run Twitter accounts for organisations including the BBC, said: ‘Looking back at my first tweet is looking at a moment my life changed. Like my first day at school but with more wine and crying.’ There is a dark side to the site. Crimes linked to Twitter, such as sex abuse and blackmail, are up fourfold in three years. picTures: rex

Toddler walks out of home in dead of night TWO-YEAR-OLD Theo Costelloe was the talk of Limerick yesterday after he walked out of his house and walked a mile across the N7 Dublin to Limerick Road in the dead of night. Wearing only a onesie, Theo had climbed out of his cot, closed his bedroom door behind him before opening his front door, which had not been locked from the inside. Unaware of what had happened, his family slept in their beds. The intrepid toddler’s little adventure sparked panic in his mother’s heart and led to a major Garda investigation. Theo was eventually taken to safety by a passer-by – University of Limerick student James Ryan – who alerted gardaí, who then called to his mother Christine to tell her they had Theo.
by DAviD RALEigH ‘I was shocked. I’m so relieved,’ Ms Costelloe said. Little Theo, described as ‘shy’, was unaware he had sparked a Garda alert. Two gardaí at the station, Shaun O’Hagan and Orlaith Ryan, returned the little adventurer to his mother. Garda O’Hagan said little Theo was ‘cool out’ despite all the panic surrounding his departure from his home. Garda Ryan added: ‘It can happen to anybody. It was a complete accident and it could happened to anybody. ‘At that age children are starting to move about and it’s not Christine’s fault or anyone’s fault. What happened was unfortunate but fortunate he was found safe and well so close to his home.’
Varadkar: Say sorry, Commissioner TRANSPORT Minister Leo Varadkar has called on Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan to apologise to the whistleblowers he attacked for exposing abuse of the penalty points system. Mr Varadkar (pictured) said the two officers involved in revealing the scandal should be described as ‘distinguished’ – a thinly-veiled reference to the Commissioner’s description of their actions as ‘disgusting’. ‘That remark should be withdrawn,’ the minister said, adding that he wanted to thank the whistleblowers, former Garda John Wilson and serving Sergeant Maurice McCabe.
THE FuNEREAL DEAL: In relation to Thursday’s front page lead about Funerals Live, which is offering to livestream funerals for people unable to attend, such as emigrants or those in care homes, another Irish company, MemorialLane.ie, points out that it has been offering livestreaming of funerals for some time.

THE Quinn Group was ‘doing what they were told’ by Anglo Irish Bank when unloading their 29 per cent control of the bank in July 2008. The trial of three former Anglo executives – Sean Fitzpatrick, William McAteer and Pat Whelan – accused of illegally loaning money to unwind the Quinn stake has heard from a senior Quinn Group official that Sean Quinn was forced to dispose of his stake. Dara O’Reilly, then group finance director, told the court the businessman was not happy with the plan as he believed the Anglo stock, which was falling rapidly at the time, could recover at some stage. ‘I don’t think it was voluntary,’ Mr O’Reilly told the court. ‘Quinn was doing what they were told to do.’ Mr O’Reilly said he was also the director of a Quinn subsidiary known as Bazzely, a company set up in 2005 for the sole purpose of trading in CFDs. He said that at the end of March, 2008, Anglo and Quinn representatives met and pressure was put on Mr Quinn to reduce his CFD position. Judge Martin Nolan has sent the jury home until Monday.

Russia seizes ships RUSSIAN troops stormed three Ukrainian warships anchored in Sevastopol port yesterday. ProMoscow militiamen helped the soldiers cordon off the area, allowing a boat full of gunmen to seize the vessels. ‘Stun grenades were used during the assault and automatic fire was heard,’ said Ukrainian military spokesman Vladislav Seleznyov. ‘It appears the Russians have taken the flags down but not put out their own.’ The Russian tricolour was raised on a pier near the three corvettes – Ternopol, Lutsk and Khmelnitsky.

‘The United States is today moving, as we said we would, to impose costs on Russia,’ said Mr Obama, who also signed an executive order authorising economic sanctions if the situation in Ukraine deteriorates further. His move came as David Cameron called on the current EU summit to send a ‘clear and united’ message to Russia over its annexation of Crimea. The British prime minister insisted events in Ukraine had reached a stage where new trade and economic sanctions should be triggered against Moscow, adding: ‘What Russia has done is unacceptable. The countries

of the European Union need to speak with a united voice. ‘What that means is more asset freezes and travel bans and more action specifically in respect of what has happened in Crimea.’ The gathering of 28 EU leaders is expected to extend travel bans on members of Mr Putin’s regime. Meanwhile, in a tit-for-tat retaliation after Mr Obama’s sanctions announcement Russia imposed entry bans on nine US politicians and officials, including house speaker John Boehner and Bob Menendez, the chairman of the foreign relations committee.

Stan gets warm glow from Captain America film deal Sebastian Stan hopes he may one day don the Captain America costume even though he plays the hero’s titular villain in new sequel, The Winter Soldier. The 30-year-old has reportedly signed a nine-picture deal with Marvel Studios to play James ‘Bucky’ Barnes. Fans of the comics will
know he becomes Captain America after Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, dies. Evans is half-way through a reported six-film deal. ‘Wherever the directors want to take the story is where I am going,’ Stan said.

carlett Johansson may kick serious ass in the captain america film series but she admits she would do almost anything to get out of the gruelling gym sessions her role requires. the 29-year-old screen siren is back in the Winter Soldier as formidable spy Natasha romanoff but says she wished preparing for the part was as easy as her recent turn as a phone app’s voice in Spike Jonze’s sci-fi romance Her. ‘Is there another character from my film past I would like to introduce to a captain america film? If I could do the voice from Her it would avoid the early morning gym hours,’ she said at the British premiere for the action movie. and it seems the star is permanently scarred by her previous appearances as the feisty SHIelD agent, who she first played in Iron Man 2. ‘I am forever wounded. stunt work as possible.’ However, Johansson reveals she does get a thrill out of playing the ‘Black Widow’ in the Marvel movie and she can identify more with the softer side to her persona, as opposed to her murky, mercenary past. ‘as with any character you play you have to at least be sympathetic to what you play. even if it’s a villainous character you have to have some likeability to you. this character has this unexpected humility to her and a soft underbelly. and I have that same softness,’ she giggled. and fans of romanoff who want to know how she turned from killer-forhire to good guy will be excited to hear her background is going to be explored further in another Marvel blockbuster. ‘You’ll get more of Widow’s backstory in avengers 2,’ she said: ‘She definitely comes from a really dark past.’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier is in cinemas from Wednesday.

Chris Evans said he was red, white and bruised when he pulled on his stars and stripes costume to play Captain America in The Winter Soldier. The 32-year-old all-American actor confessed he took a sound beating by performing his own stunts in the superhero sequel. ‘There are always injuries. Doing stunt work is physical stuff,’ he said. ‘Even when you block a punch, that punch lands somewhere so you’re always going home with bumps and bruises.’
Sam salutes real-life army heroes Samuel L Jackson used his time on the Captain America red carpet to hail real-life soldiers. The 65-year-old gushed with pride for service men and women. ‘I look at the young people who put their lives on the line for us so that we do have the freedom to make movies like this and tell stories like this,’ he said. ‘We do have a volunteer army now. It’s not like people have to do it and I admire them greatly.’ The actor, who voiced Frozone in The Incredibles, plays spy chief Nick Fury and was delighted his character has more air time than in previous Marvel outings. However, he was not afraid to step away from the action and let his stunt double handle the rough stuff. ‘I used my stunt man extensively! I have no issues with him getting hurt, that’s why he is there. He loves it,’ Jackson said.

Safety fears: Prof Green and his wife Millie Mackintosh arrive at Bromley magistrates’ court yesterday PICTURE: XPOSURE
Prof Green ‘drink-driving while chasing a mugger’ RAPPER Professor Green was drinkdriving because he was chasing a mugger, a UK court heard yesterday. The 30-year-old got behind the wheel of his Mercedes when a robber took his €47,000 Rolex watch on the doorstep outside his home, according to his defence counsel. The court heard the musician – who was banned from driving for a year – got into the car because he feared for his wife, Made In Chelsea star, Millie Mackintosh. The rapper – real name Stephen Manderson – said he tried to wrestle with the man but heard his wife, who was ‘considerably more drunk’ than
him, scream and run away. His level of panic could also be linked to an incident when he was stabbed in the throat in 2009, Mr Hislop added. Green got about 45m down the road in Lewisham, southeast London, before hearing his wife scream. He reversed and backed into a parked van, Bromley magistrates’ court heard. Green was found to have driven with 52mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35. He pleaded guilty to drink-driving and, along with the ban, was ordered to pay a £525 (€625) fine and costs.

Infamous anti-gay US pastor dies THE former leader of a US church notorious for its anti-gay protests has died. The Rev Fred Phelps Sr, whose Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas drew international condemnation for outrageous and hate-filled protests that blamed almost everything,
including the deaths of Aids victims and US soldiers, on America’s tolerance for gay people, was 84. He was criticised for picketing funerals of fallen soldiers waving homophobic placards. His family did not provide a cause of death.
OSCAR PISTORIUS is having to sell the house where he shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, it emerged yesterday. The Blade Runner is to off-load the home in Pretoria to pay his legal fees as his murder trial is to go beyond the planned three weeks. The Paralympian was believed to have run up legal bills of at least €240,000 even before the trial began on March 3. He told the court he used to earn €360,000 a year but has not run since 2012 and had sold several racehorses and another property, after Nike and Oakley cancelled sponsorship deals. Pistorius has not returned to his home since he fatally shot Ms Steenkamp in an upstairs bathroom in the early hours of February 14 last year. His lawyer, Brian Webber, said the athlete ‘cannot contemplate ever
returning to live there again’, and the house has remained sealed since it was handed back by police over a year ago. Homes on the 90-acre estate, Selling: Pistorius ten miles east of the South African capital sell for between €170,000 and €350,000. A bank holiday in South Africa means the court is not sitting today but Pistorius could take the stand for the first time early next week after prosecutors told the court they just had ‘four or five’ more witnesses to call. Prosecutors allege Pistorius shot his girlfriend through a locked toilet door in a fit of rage after an argument. The defence claim he fired in self-defence after mistaking her for an intruder. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

How long to put up with being followed by security?
I
just wanted to share my shopping experience from last Wednesday. I was at a large retailer with my cousin. We are of Indian origin, but have been living in Ireland for almost 15 years. We both gained Irish nationality years ago, and both our parents are tax-paying employees in Ireland. We were at the cosmetic section and were looking for the correct shade and testing different things out when we noticed a security guard watching us. It was so obvious he was watching the both of us that other shoppers were also looking at us like we were convicted felons. At one point, his radio went off saying that ‘the cosmetic section was being closely monitored because the girls seem very interested’. the guard followed us all the way to the checkout. We went to another shop, only to have the staff there follow us around. At least she had the courtesy to look away
and pretend to be fixing the shelf when I caught her eye. this is not a rare occurrence. I will never shop again in either of these shops. How long do we have to put up with this? Does this happen to others? Outraged ■ It’s outrageous that the gay community thinks the st Patrick’s parade should be turned into a gay parade. And even more outrageous that some companies go as far as to boycott this celebration of pride and glory of Ireland just because the LGBt community was not allowed to put their sexuality above st Patrick. Dear gays, lesbians and transgenders, you have your parade, so please stop dictating to others, and stop throwing your sexuality in our faces. Max P ■ they are putting in water meters on my road in Donnycarney, D5. Oh, the irony – it’s floggin’ rain again and the house beside the Ramble Inn has a burst pipe outside it for three-plus days. K

Fitting face to the crime from just a drop of DNA by HAyDEN sMiTH
DNA left at a crime scene could in future be used to build up a precise picture of an offender’s face. A first step towards genetic mugshots, a sci-fi twist on the hit CSI tV franchise, has been taken by researchers. they are now able to link specific DNA markers with different face shapes and deformations. the Pennsylvania University team found that 20 genes had significant effects on facial appearance. One gene shaped the lips, another the shape and configuration of bones around the eyes, and a third the appearance of the mid-face and skull. ‘We use DNA to match to an individual or identify an individual, but you can get so much more from DNA,’ said lead scientist professor Mark Shriver. ‘Currently we can’t go from DNA to a face, or from a face to DNA, but it should be possible one day.’ the implications are far reaching, raising the possibility of creating a very accurate data bank of facial types. DNA from a crime scene could then be used to produce a rough image

McCartney halts sale of old suit SIR Paul McCartney has stopped an auction of an old suit, a cape and a scrap of paper with three lines of a song on it, which his former housekeeper Rose Martin said she was given by his late wife Linda about 30 years ago. Mrs Martin died aged 92 last year and her family hoped to raise about £30,000 (€35,000) by selling the goods. The auction in Liverpool also includes jackets from Help! and the piano on which Sir Paul composed Yesterday.

Shades of being: Subtle skin tone variations in European faces, left, and African ones, right, will one day be detected from a strand of DNA Picture: PA of the face of an offender or victim. Such genetic mug shots may be more reliable than computer-generated efits based on witness descriptions. Other uses of the technique might include proving the identity of fathers
in paternity cases, or visualising our remote ancestors from old DNA. ‘Such predictive modelling could be forensically useful,’ researchers told the journal Public library of Science Genetics. ‘DNA left at crime scenes could
be tested and faces predicted in order to help narrow the pool of suspects. ‘further, our methods could be used to predict the facial features of descendants, deceased ancestors, and even extinct human species. ‘In addition, these methods could prove to be useful diagnostic tools.’
THE Rolling Stones have denied claims they compared Mick Jagger’s dead girlfriend L’Wren Scott to The Beatles antagonist Yoko Ono. Friends of the band accused the New York Post of having a ‘vendetta’ against the designer after it alleged the band said L’Wren was ‘controlling’ and her relationship with the group was similar to that of John Lennon’s widow Ono. Jagger, 70, has been ill with grief since the 49-year-old partner’s suicide on Monday.

David Fincher’s film based on the book by political cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), which documents the true story of the unsolved murders by a serial killer stalking the streets of the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1960s and 1970s. The killer leads detectives on a cat and mouse game, leaving a series of encrypted letters at the crime scenes and the investigation quickly flatlines when none of the evidence yields any solid leads. Two detectives, including Inspector David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo, pictured with Gyllenhaal) are determined to find the elusive killer, but they soon realise the case is beginning to take over their lives. Robert Downey Jr also stars as crime reporter Paul Avery.

A survival story, not a fairytale Kylie Minogue may be the perfect pop princess but the happy ending fans seek may never arrive, she tells Amy Dawson

aiting in the lobby of a London hotel, i can sense Kylie Minogue coming before i see her. two doormen flanking the entrance are whispering feverishly as they crane to look down the street – while a waitress bobs past with a tray of tea, humming: ‘i’m spinning around…’ Suddenly the 45-year-old arrives and scoots upstairs, past gaping faces, in a spotless camel-coloured coat. i join her in a fancy suite, where it’s hard to believe the Kylie – the woman who wore a pair of 50p gold hot pants so well they formed
“The worst thing about being my age is being asked about it” the centrepiece of her own V&a show, whose bittersweet belter Better the Devil You Know is played at half-past midnight every Saturday at legendary London club g-a-Y – is on the same sofa as me. But we’re here to discuss her recent – slick and frequently anthemic – 12th album Kiss Me Once. and, more importantly, some just-announced autumn European tour dates. So it’s time to stop gawping and start talking. Minogue, the consummate performer, is clearly itching to experience the rush of touring again – and is keenly attuned to the power of a superstar concert. ‘i just think it’s kind of cosmic, i’ve said that for a long time,’ she says. ‘that
might sound a bit airy-fairy to some people but i’m talking about something very strong – this incredible collision of energies, from me and from the crowd. ‘i like to mentally pluck a few people from the audience and wonder… what is your experience? i’ve had something to do with your life and you’ve had so much to do with mine but we’ve never met. Did you play my song at your wedding? Was i the first album you bought? it’s just amazing to wonder.’ Minogue’s tours are always spectacular. But the last, 2011’s aphrodite – which featured the pop princess in full goddess garb, arising from a giant seashell and straddling a golden Pegasus – was the most flamboyant so far. She is yet to confirm her costume designers for the forthcoming Kiss Me Once tour but aphrodite was her third tour decked in Dolce & gabbana, so it seems like a good enough bet. in the meantime, she’s been working with her long-term stylist William Baker to cook up a new vibe. ‘i’m currently obsessed with this kind of 1970s, soft-focus sexiness – i mean i’m on the verge of putting a brown-orange sofa and maybe an orange lamp in my house,’ she laughs. ‘My shows have a reputation for being over-the-top but i really want this one to be more streamlined, with more of that vibe. But there will probably still be glitter and feathers. i just definitely don’t think bigger is necessarily better.’

She claims her decision to join the tV talent shows was inspired by a ‘state of mind that was open to trying new things, new experiences’. this may have had

something to do with her unexpected decision to drop fellow Melbourne native terry Blamey, her manager of 25 years, to join Jay-Z’s Roc nation. ‘i used to joke with terry that they might as well pickle us, we’d worked together so long,’ she says. ‘So to change was a big deal but it was harmonious. it was the perfect time to wrap it up.’ When Minogue launched as the archetypal soap star-turned-pop darling, few would have predicted her longevity. nevertheless, in the mould of Madonna, Minogue is both a survivor and a canny chameleon – and throughout all her incarnations, even 1990s experimental ‘indie’ Kylie, she has never publicly lost her rag with anyone. ‘Behind doors, i do have to deal with my frustration, yes,’ she admits. ‘But i think it was drilled into me at such a young age to try and grin and bear it.’ One thing that must make her want to punch journalists on the nose, i suggest, must be the endless speculation about why she has so far never married or had children, despite a stream of long-term relationships. Currently single, she split from her Spanish boyfriend of five years, the extraordinarily handsome andrés Velencoso, last October. ‘i’ve come to the conclusion that the worst thing about being my age is simply being asked about it,’ she says. ‘it’s not really hindering me. i’ve gained so much from those experiences and my relationship with my fans is even deeper. So i don’t see where the negative is, except that i have to keep talking about it… and i don’t really know what to say.’ Just as i start to feel fairly mortified, she smiles that famous smile. ‘i appreciate people’s concern, i really do,’ she assures. ‘and the fact that they would like me to have a fairy-tale happy ending. Wouldn’t that be great? But maybe that’s just not my destiny, i don’t know. Who knows what my destiny is?’

THEATRE REviEw Conservatory HHHHI In A Tender Thing, a reworking of Romeo & Juliet staged recently at The Project Arts Centre, playwright Ben Power fashioned a world in which Shakespeare’s titular lovers had somehow cheated their ‘star crossed’ fate and fetched up as an elderly couple haunted by the death of a daughter years earlier. Michael West’s new play Conservatory, which also hones in an elderly couple ravaged by grief, makes a fascinating companion piece. Where Power’s Romeo and Juiet – terminal illness and personal tragedy notwithstanding – are still very much in love in old age, He (Stephen Brennan) and She (Deirdre Donnelly) are trapped in a marriage as toxic as it is enduring. Through the course of a single evening the painfully middle-class pair hector and cajole each other from the

In West’s portrait of a soured relationship, sensitively directed by Michael Barker Caven, telling details build only incrementally; by the end, however, the audience has formed a troubling vision of a marriage marred by human weakness and gut-wrencing tragedy. Prison flick reaches for sky
THE Big RELEAsE
Starred Up (18) HHHH✩
Rare is the movie that could win over both the football hooligan flick crowd and those whose idea of a fun Friday night is a searing arthouse drama, but this pummelling British awards contender punches both boxes. The title refers to the act of consigning a below-age offender into an adult prison. Nineteen-year-old Eric Love (Jack O’Connell – a star is born) is a spitting fireball of testosterone and abuse who finds himself sent to a new jail where his dad (magnificent Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn) is also banged up as one of the oldest serving inmates. Within minutes of being strip-searched and locked in his cell, cheeky young Eric, a hardened product of the care system, has already fashioned a shank from a melted toothbrush handle and a safety razor blade. And it’s soon clear he ain’t out to toe the line drawn by any of the men jostling to be his saviour: the wing’s Mr Big, his Dad or his understanding therapist (a revelatory Rupert Friend). Prison exploitation flick clichés are all present and correct: fights in the shower, institutional rape, graphic violence and nudity, but this is at heart a family saga.

Suicidal romcom is a bit of a downer a Long Way doWn (15) HH✩✩✩ High Fidelity, Fever Pitch, About A Boy: Nick Hornby bestsellers have made great movies. Until now. On New Year’s Eve, four strangers have a random ‘meet cute’ on ‘Toppers’ Tower’ block, London’s most popular suicide spot. There’s the disgraced TV star (Pierce Brosnan, looking wryly amused by his own handsomeness), the downtrodden single mum of a handicapped boy (Toni Collette – the film’s one believable note), the US pizza deliveryman with cancer (Aaron Paul, aka Jesse from Breaking Bad) and the kooky young thing in hot pants (Imogen Poots). Rather than jump, they make a pact: none of them will kill themselves until Valentine’s Day. Blending suicidal misery with feel-good romantic comedy is a tall order but can be done – witness About A Boy. But Brosnan is no Hugh Grant. Special mention to Poots, who is, rather dangerously, making a career out of being the best thing in a series of two-star movies. But the characters are mainly so unlikeable, you’d happily push them off a tall building yourself. Li-Z

Fashion that’s fit to print RECYCLING CHIC: metro herald, nCad and Forever 21 have initiated a unique style event, writes Angharad Williams
M
ETRO Herald has teamed up with one of the biggest names in fashion, Forever 21, and upcoming designers from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) to host an up-styling challenge with a difference. Five teams of second-year fashion students were chosen by picking names out of a hat. The teams were then given the challenge of creating a fashion item entirely out of recycled Metro Herald newspapers. Yesterday, students could be seen designing their completed looks in store, and they will be on display in Forever 21’s Jervis Shopping Centre shop for a week. Visitors can vote for their favourite design and the winning team will be awarded €500 in vouchers. One team leader, JJ Donnelly, 20, from Clonskeagh, said they jumped at the chance to take part. ‘We thought it was a really good opportunity to get our names out there and it’s always fun working in group projects. We’re used to dealing with patterns and putting them together so this is a very different story. Getting the newspaper to do what you want it to do without it falling apart is quite hard.’ Ally Nolan, also 20, from Carlow, said her team had been working late into the night to get the newspaper ready. ‘We are
trying to do something really detailed, so after rolling 5,000 paper rolls I’d say time has been our biggest challenge. We all wanted to do something very dramatic, but that’s quite hard because the material is so light. We thought if we made the rolls we could add something like beading later. Hopefully it will all come together.’ NCAD fashion and textiles lecturer Linda Byrne said the students are used to dealing with fabric, but paper is a new challenge. ‘They presented their ideas to us and we did a bit of an editing job and now we have the final result. ‘Working with a brand like Forever 21 gives them the opportunity to work within the industry and not feel as isolated as they can do in a college situation. It’s nice to see how the organisation works and what the design ethos of the company is.’ On March 27, there will be an exclusive event for Metro Herald readers when the winning team will be announced. Withdraw ‘enforced’ job scheme
TREAT the unemployed with respect and dignity by withdrawing the compulsory element of the JobBridge and Gateway programmes, Unite’s regional secretary Jimmy Kelly has said. In a letter to Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton, Mr Kelly asked the minister to withdraw the requirement for mandatory participation in the schemes. He said the compulsory programmes have a negative impact on the economy and public finances. ‘Labour that is provided for “free” through mandatory programmes not only negates the need to hire labour, it has the potential to create distortions between companies,’ he said. ‘There is a need to develop labour activation measures that provide training, experience and develop contacts that can lead to employment.’

eU reaches deal on step towards banking union THE European Union has reached a deal on a major step toward creating a banking union aimed at stabilising the financial system and making it easier to deal with troubled banks. After all-night negotiations, EU member states and the region’s parliament agreed on how to set up a joint authority to restructure or shut down failing banks.
Corien Wortmann-Kool, a lead negotiator for the parliament, said that ‘this is very good for restoring confidence in European banks’. Under the new rules troubled banks could be dealt with ‘within a weekend’ instead of the previously protracted process. Negotiators had insisted on reaching a deal before the European elections in May.

What would give you a real buzz every day workwise? I’m not going to let you away with, ‘I wouldn’t do anything’. That’s not going to work for long, trust me (and no, I haven’t won the lottery). We all need meaningful activity in our lives. So what would yours be? Putting yourself through the Lottery Fantasy exercise Try removing can be a good status and way to money from focus the equation on what really counts in your real-life career. You should also make a point of interrogating your own status anxiety. When it comes to career choices, status can be a terrific motivator but also a huge distorter. It gets some of us into our chosen profession, but it can also trap us. Fear of what our colleagues, peers, parents, partners or even children may think may hold us back from counter-intuitive but brilliant career decisions. I have had clients openly admit that status got them into a profession but that now they couldn’t give a hoot about it. They would much rather be happy. On the other side of the coin I meet great clients who believe their chosen career field is too low-level for them and want to improve their status. Money and status obviously have their place in anyone’s career priorities. But try removing them from the equation as the be-all and end-all and perhaps you might see yourself on a totally different track?

Leinster to look within for a successor to BOD by gARETH MAkiM
With Brian O’Driscoll’s international career now over and his provincial swansong looming as the next, and final, stop on the BOD farewell tour, Leinster head coach Matt O’Connor is faced with the same conundrum as national boss Joe Schmidt – replacing his club’s greatest ever player. Yesterday, the Australian admitted the next owner of the blue No.13 shirt was likely to come from within the provincial set-up, given the lack of ready-made replacements on the open market. ‘Firstly, replacing Brian O’Driscoll has its own issues but coming up to a World Cup there’s not many blokes who are – if i am being perfectly honest – good enough to fill the No.13 shirt for us who are on the market,’ O’Connor said. ‘Players of a generation are going to be incredibly difficult to replace. that’s not only at Leinster or ireland, but globally. ‘We know that we need, at some point in the future, a world-class bloke in that slot. ‘Currently, we’re pretty comfortable with the bodies that we’ve got. When that changes we’ll have a look around and see what’s about. We certainly haven’t looked yet. We’re working hard with Girvan [Dempsey, academy manager] the whole time on our succession plan, to make sure that we’ve got our boxes ticked in relation to the guys that are going to fulfil that succession plan.’ two of the immediate contenders to succeed O’Driscoll take the field tonight as Leinster welcome Pro12 bottom side Zebre to the RDS, with Six Nations winner Fergus McFadden lining up in midfield and fit-again Luke Fitzgerald named on the wing. however, O’Connor hinted that Fitzgerald may be in pole position for the jersey – ‘if he’s playing, yeah’ – but conceded that throwing the 26-year-old into the centre this evening may be too much, too soon in his recovery from persistent abdominal problems. ‘Luke would have the skill set to do it, no doubt,’ O’Connor said. ‘it’s just that with his run of injuries in recent times it’s probably a step too far for him at the moment. ‘Ferg has played there a lot for Leinster, and he’s incredibly physical in that space.’ ian Madigan and Jordi Murphy also start after sitting on the irish bench in Paris last weekend, while Marty Moore and Eoin Reddan are named among tonight’s replacements.

D’Arcy signs new contract to stay with province Gordon D’Arcy will be back in a Leinster jersey next season after head coach Matt O’Connor confirmed the veteran centre had agreed a new contract. The 34-year-old, who has amassed 79 international appearances and played more than 200 times for his province, was a key figure in Ireland’s Six Nations Championship triumph and his
experience will be vital as the Leinster and Ireland backlines get used to life after Brian O’Driscoll. ‘D’Arcy has probably rejuvenated himself a little bit,’ O’Connor said yesterday. ‘I don’t know if it was beardrelated or not, but he certainly is playing like a bloke significantly younger than he is. He’s played some fantastic rugby for us and for Ireland.’

SEVEN games left but up in Leinster’s UCD basecamp you know there will be 11 dates circled in red as tonight’s visit of Zebre remains one of the few sure things on the fixture list. After tonight the challenges will get tougher every week, but keep winning and the season will run to 11 games and not seven. Next up is Munster, then Toulon away and Ospreys away. Then in May there will be a trip to Ravenhill. Collecting wins from all of these games can put Leinster on track for PRO12 and Heineken Cup glory, but that is easier said than done. The big task will be reintegrating 13 players after Fergus McFadden, Ian Madigan, Jordi Murphy, Isaac Boss and Martin Moore complete their returns. That will make 18 players who haven’t played together for Leinster since the end of January who are likely to make up the match-day 23 against Munster in just over a week’s time. Some of the combinations will transfer easily from Irish camp, but there will be a lot of frayed edges against Munster where the men from the south will be eager to readdress the balance that has seen just Paul O’Connell and Conor Murray earn starting berths in the Six Nations. The trip to Toulon will be made trickier by the fact that they will be battlehardened from this weekend’s away fixture with Clermont Auvergne and next week’s visit of Toulouse. And for all of their international star power only Maxime Mermoz, Matheiu Bastareaud and Martin Castrogiovanni have been wearied by Six Nations duty. The rest of their brutish talents have been gelling nicely under Jonny Wilkinson, hardly a team susceptible to an ambush. Tonight’s game will not tell us too much about next week, or even of what we can expect against Toulon. There are, however, two shirts which look up for grabs – who will play at out-half and who will get the nod at openside? Madigan will start tonight and O’Connor noted yesterday it is the outhalf’s control of the front of the game where they want more development because the coach has no issues about his ability to close out game. Next week look to see if Jordi Murphy or Shane Jennings gets the nod at No 7, unless Dominic Ryan stars tonight.

HOLLAnD is LAsT HURDLE TO T20 TRiUMPH From the outset, it’s been made clear that Ireland’s foremost objective is to win their three group games at the World Twenty20 and advance to the business end of proceedings, writes Ryan Bailey. Phil Simmons’ side have achieved two-thirds of that initial target but having strutted their way to the top of Group B with successive victories, any slip-up this morning against Netherlands is likely to send them home early. There is the possibility that a narrow reversal may still be enough to advance depending on the outcome of Zimbabwe’s match against the UAE which is up first this morning while Ireland’s net run rate, which is used to separate sides with equal points, is superior to their rivals. But all-rounder Kevin o’Brien knows relying on other variables is risky business. ‘It’s a big game for both sides because there is so much at stake,’ he said. ‘The table says we could still go through with a defeat but we want to finish with a win and
