Four carjackings in just one week A GOOD Samaritan was carjacked yesterday when he stopped to lend a hand at the scene of a road accident in Co Wicklow. The German driver of the black Mercedes-Benz C180 stopped to help when he came upon the collision between a bus and a black Volvo at Clara Vale, Rathdrum at around 2.30pm. However, a group of four men who were travelling in the Volvo then hijacked the German-reg Mercedes-Benz and sped off in the direction of Glendalough. A woman passenger in the Mercedes, who was in her 70s, was slightly injured in the incident. There are no reports of injuries among the bus occupants. Gardaí are investigating if the Volvo was earlier involved in a burglary in Athy, Co Carlow. The Mercedes-Benz was recovered in Tullow, Co Carlow yesterday afternoon and is being pre-

No one has been arrested in relation to the incident and last night gardaí from Wicklow and Carlow, as well as the Garda air support unit were carrying out a search of the area. This is the fourth carjacking in the Leinster area in a week. Yesterday, a 15-year-old youth appeared at the Children’s Court charged in connection with the carjacking of a taxi in Terenure in the early hours of Sunday. Meanwhile, a man is due to appear in court this morning in connection with a hijacking and robbery in Terenure on Friday. A woman and her two children were in the car at the time. Separately, a man has been charged in connection with a carjacking near Mountjoy Square on May 12.

Who needs Mount Everest when you can conquer a wall cheered by tourists?
A dam long climb by DAniEL Binns THESE daredevils haven’t so much hit the wall as gone up and over it in the name of adventure. They have turned the 165m high Diga di Luzzone dam in Ticino, Switzerland, into the Mount Everest of climbing walls. Climbers even need to use a ladder to get up the first 6m of the wall. German Ilana Marcus, from website Thrillseekers Anonymous, said: ‘The climbing was very smooth and fun ‘Topping out the climb to an audience of tourists watching your every move and perhaps anticipating the possibility of an exciting fall was memorable.’

Irish artist goes a bit Brazil nuts to carve footballers for World Cup
Tough nut to crack: Can you spot the Gary Lineker?
IRISH artist Quentin Devine has gone nuts at the prospect of the World Cup and carved five faces of English football legends on a handful of Brazils. Armed with a scalpel, a magnifying glass and a €1 bag of Brazil Nuts, the Co Tyrone man spent around four days on each portrait of Gary Lineker, Paul Gascoigne, David Beckham, Alan Shearer and current England star Wayne Rooney.
He said he used more than 50 nuts in the challenge, set by TV channel Dave to celebrate its World Cup coverage, before he got it right. He said: ‘The nuts can be very oily and extremely brittle but I think I managed to successfully capture the essence of each these football heroes. ‘My final piece, Gary Lineker, proved to be a tough nut to crack with his large ear span reducing the already tiny surface area I had to work with.
‘After over 20 attempts, many broken ears and all hope lost, I finally perfected it. On another note, I know Dave is a comedy channel, but an Irish man carving English footballers into Brazil nuts is a real joke isn’t it?’ The dad of three works with his wife Adele making software. He had never carved nuts before but he has carved other foods. He said: ‘I knew I could sculpt and carve, so I said yes when Dave asked if I could do it.’

Aer Lingus row over ‘extra 32days off’ claim PROPOSED new rosters for Aer Lingus cabin crew would result in an additional 32 paid days off, the company has said. The airline has again called on members of the Impact trade union to call off a May 30 strike, calling it ‘pre-emptive, unwarranted and an extremely unfair imposition on the travelling public, tourists and businesses’.
8% Fall in annual profits at Ryanair, to €523m, the airline’s first drop in 5 years
It said the 24-hour June Bank Holiday weekend action would affect 28,000 customers. The airline said allegations of unworkable rosters used extreme examples, were misleading and bore ‘no resemblance to the company’s actual rosters’. Impact last night said Aer Lingus’ extra days off claims were ‘nonsense’. It said crew wanted better planned, easier to manage rosters which would not increase costs.

Jet diverts as crew fall ill from fumes by pAT fLynn
A TRANSATLANTIC aircraft diverted to Dublin Airport on Sunday after three flight attendants were overcome by fumes and left ‘partially incapacitated.’ The US Airways flight was en route from Venice in Italy to Philadelphia in the US when the pilot contacted air traffic controllers. It was the second time this month that flight AWE-715 was forced to divert to Dublin with the problem, however different aircraft were involved. The Airbus A330-200 jet was about 340km west of Shannon Airport and more than 500km from Dublin when the crew made a U-turn and told controllers they wished to land. The flight crew was offered several airport options to divert to, including Dublin, Shannon and Belfast, before the crew opted to land in Dublin. The pilot also confirmed that three flight attendants were suffering from the affects of ‘inhaling fumes’ which

On May 10, a different Airbus A330 aircraft with the same airline on the same route diverted to Dublin after the pilot reported a number of crew members and passengers had become ill with nausea and dizziness – nine cabin crew were later taken to a hospital for treatment. In July 2013 an US Airways flight bound for North Carolina diverted to Dublin after two flight crew fell ill shortly after take-off.

Man who fell under bus had taken ‘drug cocktail’
by cOnOR gALLAgHER
One-tunnel Metro North ‘unfeasible’ THE Department of Transport was forced to deny reports last night that the Metro North project is back on track with a cheaper alternative. It was reported that the plan devised by Cormac Rabbitt would revive the Metro North underground but the spokesman said the one-tunnel plan is ‘unfeasible’ at its €2billion price tag. Mr Rabbitt, who previously worked on Dart Underground, told Metro Herald his underground can feasibly be built in 35 months and for €2billion, and won’t disrupt traffic during construction.
Weather warning as flooding is expected

A MAN who was allegedly knocked under and crushed to death by a Dublin Bus had a cocktail of drugs in his system and may have been unsteady on his feet, a trial has heard. Edward Connors, 30, of no fixed abode and formerly of Bearna Park, Sandyford, is alleged to have punched Eoghan Dudley, 28, on Dawson Street, causing him to go under the bus. The court heard from two expert witnesses for the defence that Mr Dudley had heroin, morphine, methadone, codeine and cannabis in his system and that all of these substances are known to affect the balance of the user. The accused, who has pleaded not guilty to unlawfully killing Mr Dudley, admits interacting with the deceased but claims that what looks like a punch on CCTV footage is actually him trying to grab Mr Dudley to stop him falling off the path. Dr Declan Gilsenan, a former assistant state pathologist, gave evidence that the mixture of the drugs in Mr Dudley’s system would have multiplied each other’s effects and told the court the effects could include uncertainty of balance. The trial continues tomorrow.

60 seconds Actor turned director JOHn TuRTuRRO, 57, has starred in more than 60 movies. He directed part of his latest film Fading Gigolo wearing just his underpants
In Fading Gigolo, you play a gigolo and Woody Allen is your pimp. Is it a comedy? It’s
a delicate comedy. Audiences start laughing, then stop midway, then laugh again. Woody and I share the same barber. He was always telling us we should work together. I thought we’d be an interesting team.
Was it intimidating directing Woody Allen? It’s only the third
time ever that he’s done a big role for someone else. Right at the beginning he liked the idea of us playing these characters who ended up reinventing themselves by working part-time in the sex industry but he didn’t want it to be stupid. So we decided I would write it and then he would give me his feedback – or, rather, his merciless criticism. He was harsh but at the same time encouraged me to develop the script in a nuanced way without telling me what to do.
Is it true you directed the Sharon Stone sex scene only wearing your underpants? As
a director you need to create an environment on set where people aren’t afraid and can relax and try things. I think being a director has a lot to do with people skills. I’ve worked with a lot of directors and writers who don’t have people skills at all – they’re good directors in their own way but I don’t necessarily enjoy working with them.

Housing crisis ‘is putting thousands of children at risk’ by ED cARTy
You’ve played all kinds of weird memorable characters, including the purple-clad ‘Pederast’ who licks bowling balls in The Big Lebowski. What role do you most get recognised for? A lot of people
are obsessed with The Big Lebowski. Some have watched it over 200 times. It’s usually for one of the Coen Brothers’ films or Did the recent historic Spike Lee’s or sometimes sex abuse those Transformers allegations from movies, which doesn’t please me, Woody’s The Transformers films really. daughter pose

“
are not the kind of movies I watch and I don’t want to be known for them
The allegations came after we made the movie and now it’s kind of subsided. I wouldn’t say it’s had any affect on whether people came to see the movie. Certainly not in France or Italy, where it’s opened very strongly. We have distribution in every country in the world. Whatever was alleged to have happened was a long time ago and he’s made a lot of films since then so when I approached him that wasn’t an issue.
No offence but you don’t look much like a gigolo – particularly one Sharon Stone would pay to have sex with, as she does in the film. If you were a gigolo, how much do you reckon you could charge? That’s up to my
manager! Probably not the thousands they charge in the movie. I had a couple of other guys in mind for the character I ended up playing, people who were very confident with women and just very competent physically – they could do or cook or make anything. There is something very attractive about that. A man who’s not too pretty but has his own kind of sexuality.
Why not? Are you embarrassed about being in Transformers?
I’m not embarrassed about it. But that’s like the least of what I’ve done. I know people enjoy them and that’s great but they are not the kind of movies I watch and I don’t want to be known for that.
I see you follow Dick Van Dyke on Twitter – why? He doesn’t follow you back. I do?
Well I like him a lot, I used to watch the Dick Van Dyke Show. Really, I follow Dick Van Dyke? I mainly just tweet about Fading Gigolo.
Do you think there’s a link between acting and being a sex worker? There are
similarities and there aren’t. If you look back at theatre history, once actors stopped being just men, a lot of the first famous actresses were courtesans, like Sarah Bernhardt. And, of course, there is a level of ‘performing’ about both professions. But people act in everyday life too. You act as a bank manager, you act as the director of a company – we are all playing different roles all the time. I think performance is a big part of life.
Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Fading Gigolo is out on Friday.
And what do you do?

SeVeRAL thousand children face being homeless by the end of the year if the Government does not step in immediately, a children’s charity has said. Barnardos said children are growing up in fear, uncertainty and isolation as rising rents, discrimination by landlords, inappropriate emergency accommodation and a serious lack of social housing combine to create a perfect homelessness storm. The crisis has left 1,350 parents and children in Dublin without a home of their own. Charity chief Fergus Finlay said hundreds of families are being forced into tenement-type conditions and he called for the Government to commandeer vacant hotels in Dublin and open them up for emergency accommodation. ‘I don’t believe there should be a single room left vacant,’ he said. Activist Fr Peter McVerry told RTÉ Radio on Sunday the crisis is becoming a ‘tsunami’. Ireland is witnessing the beginning of an explosion of homelessness, Mr Finlay said, adding that children are often witness to drug and alcohol problems and violence in emergency accommodation. ‘We should have been able to predict and prevent this, indeed plenty of people have been shouting about it for a long time,’ Mr Finlay said. The Government committed last year to ending homelessness by 2016. Meanwhile, 127 people are sleeping rough on the streets of Dublin, the latest survey has found.
Banville concerned at rise in TV violence BOOKER Prize-winning novelist John Banville has criticised the raft of violent crime dramas on TV. The 68-year-old author, whose novels have been adapted into RTÉ crime noir series Quirke, said too many TV shows featured sexual violence. ‘One thing that worries
me about crime series these days is just how violent they all are,’ he said. ‘They nearly all start off with some young woman being raped and murdered and cut up and thrown in a dustbin.’ TV dramas The Fall, Silent Witness, Ripper Street and Scandinavian
crime series The Bridge have all been criticised for their levels of violence recently. The author, who writes detective fiction under the pen name Benjamin Black, added: ‘Human beings are not expendable. And I think crime writers have a duty to observe this.’

Big Bucks: Winter has spent €120,000 on his coffee quest PICTURE: MERCURy PREss

Caffeine? I’ll be coffin-ated before I reach Starbucks goal WHEN ‘Winter’ set himself the challenge of visiting every Starbucks in the world, it looked to be an achievable ambition... albeit an utterly pointless one. But after spending more than €120,000 on travelling the globe in pursuit of his goal, the computer programmer has now admitted defeat. The comic book-collecting Texan, who changed his name from Rafael Antonio Lozano Jr, began his mission in 1997 when the company had 1,500 branches. He has valiantly tried to keep up with its rapid expansion by drinking caffeinated coffee in 11,676 outlets – once guzzling 29 cups in a single day. With more stores opening every week, however, he has conceded he’s unlikely to see them all before he dies. ‘I do not expect to ever complete the project, as I have every reason to think that Starbucks will outlive me,’ he said. ‘But as long as there are new stores to visit, I will try to visit them.’ Winter, from Houston, might already be said to have failed the challenge he set himself – because many Starbucks
by DAnIEL bInnS branches have opened and closed again before he had a chance to stop by. The bachelor once learned that bosses were to shut 40 US outlets and went on a 40,000km trip to try to visit them all before it was too late. He only ticks a shop off his list if he has sampled a caffeinated coffee there. The Starbucks mission that has come to dominate his life evolved naturally after he developed a fondness for the brand and began seeking out its shops on trips. A keen Scrabble player, he would combine his coffee-drinking excursions with competing in tournaments, going to concerts or sightseeing. But the 42-year-old – who confesses to a ‘mild caffeine addiction’ – admitted the coffee had gradually taken over. On one visit to Hawaii, he visited five Starbucks branches on three islands and never even went to the beach, staying for only 30 hours. ‘Pointless though it may be, a goal is a goal,’ he said.

She said: ‘He put his tongue in my mouth and gave me a tongue kiss. ‘It seemed like it lasted forever but it must have been very quick. I was quite repulsed by it. Absolutely repulsed.’ The women were called as prosecution witnesses and are not among four others who accuse TV presenter Harris of 12 counts of indecent assault between 1968 and 1986. Wining and dining... insect style WINE and a meal often lead to the bedroom... and the same is true for insects, it seems. Female bush-crickets are more likely to mate if they are offered a large blob of jelly first. But males who try to be more direct get an angry response. Forceful insects often clasp

The main reason males provide food is to maximise the number of offspring, a University of Derby study showed.

The United States yesterday unveiled unprecedented cyber espionage charges against five Chinese military officials accused of hacking into US companies to gain trade secrets. The hackers targeted big-name makers of nuclear and solar technology, stealing confidential business information, sensitive trade secrets and internal communications for competitive advantage, according to a grand jury indictment. ‘Success in the international marketplace should be based solely on a company’s ability to innovate and compete, not on a sponsor government’s ability to spy and steal business secrets,’ Attorney General eric holder said. The Obama administration has long aimed to prosecute state-sponsored cyber threats, with a recent government report stating more than 40 Pentagon weapons programs and nearly 30 other defense technologies have been compromised by cyber intrusions from China. In a statement, China’s Foreign Ministry said the US charges were based on fabricated facts and jeopardise China-US ‘cooperation and mutual trust’.

The tenth Dublin Dance Festival is almost upon us. Seona Macreamoinn takes a look at what we can expect, apart from the unexpected
A
mathematician and a neuroscientist analysing a modern dance work? Floating plastic bags morphing into a delicate, if surreal, corps de ballet? city landmarks invaded by dance aliens? these are only a few of the imaginative and provocative performances we can expect during Dublin Dance Festival’s tenth anniversary programme which springs into life today. Festival Director Julia carruthers (pictured right) is obviously keen to show off the diversity of modern dance, but in planning the programme she also had another agenda which reflects a pragmatic approach to the times we live in. ‘i don’t like those overused ‘a’ words – accessibility and austerity – but i have
been very conscious that with funding at a premium i needed to be creative in programming shows that would be of high merit but might also sell well. and then on top of that i also wanted to offer some events that would be free.’ making the festival as democratic and accessible as possible has been central to carruthers’ approach and this year events can be enjoyed in locations from tallaght to Dún Laoghaire, as well as the city centre. it underlines the notion that festivals should truly inhabit their towns and cities; as such the ark, the Rua Red Gallery and Wolfe tone Square join the more traditional spaces of the abbey, the Project and trinity’s Samuel Beckett theatre.

In addition, the ferry terminal in Dún Laoghaire will be the site for a free teaser event hosted by The Pavilion Theatre; it sees dextrous UK festival favourites Gandini Juggling present their aptly-titled Smashed, in which they juggle their way through dozens of red apples and entire sideboards-worth of dinner plates. It’s testament to her hands-on approach that Carruthers was recently spotted ‘pedalling furiously and noisily along Merrion Square to the festival office, my bicycle basket piled high with ransacked and discarded crockery!’ The festival has, over the years, also brought dance into the open air and this year Willi Dorner’s Bodies In Urban Spaces will, as its name suggests, do just that. Audiences are invited to follow a city trail from the Docklands to St Patrick’s Cathedral, where 20
“It’s putting Dublin on the dance map” performers will create moving sculptures integrated into the city’s architecture. Meanwhile, In Wolfe Tone Square, the aptlynamed Hyperactive from Irish Modern theatre will invade that space with five athletic male dancers promising to get pulses racing. It’s all an intriguing way of mapping the city but as Carruthers points out: ‘It’s also putting
Dublin on the dance map. I think it’s important that audiences here should see what’s going on in other European cities and beyond. Having Dublin embedded in a touring schedule from Paris to Berlin or Chicago to Melbourne, that’s exactly what I am after here.’ But it’s not only attracting headlining international names, including the renowned Russell Maliphant at the Abbey next week, which preoccupies DDF directors; the festival has been equally mindful of championing homegrown dance. ‘We want to show off the hot Irish choreographers,’ say Carruthers ‘and so we are delighted to have Emma Martin’s Tundra (pictured on previous page) open this year’s anniversary festival and also be able to showcase new emerging talent in the Re-Presenting Ireland strand.’
E
MMA Martin herself appeared in the Representing Ireland platform a few years ago and so this leap to festival opener is an opportunity approached with relish and awe. ‘It’s definitely a case of mixed emotions as you can imagine,’ says Martin. ‘I am honoured to have this brilliant opportunity. The work is brave and ambitious so I am very excited watching it all come together, but it’s a bit nerve-racking too.’ If Tundra conjures images of vast frozen landscapes, Dan Canham’s intriguing dance theatre work Ours Was The Fen Country takes in a terrain closer to home and hones in a moribund rural environment, at the mercy of global warming.
Dancing in the streets: Above: Gandini Juggling’s Smashed, which will serve as a tempting teaser of juggling and high-jinx at the Pavilion Theatre in Dún Laoghaire; Left: Dan Canham’s intriguing homegrown dance theatre work Ours Was The Fen Country; Right: The plastic fantastic world of L’Après Midi d’Un Foehn – Version 1, which will bring joy to children and adults alike But, back to the mathematician and the neuroscientist. It’s not Sudoku meets Beckett but Pan Pan Theatre collaborating with Irish Modern Dance Theatre on Beckett’s little-known short work Quad, which has been described as a ‘geometric mime’ and a ‘mysterious square dance’. And as for the floating plastic bags? L’apres Midi d’Un Foehn is a playful take on the classic Nijinsky work set to a Débussy score. Although it’s actually part of the children’s programme, any adult would be encouraged to catch this delightful piece that sees the most humdrum of objects transformed into unlikely dancers. There’s something for every taste in Dublin… TASTE OF DuBLin 2014 Venerated by have-a-go cooks and professionals alike, La Gavroche chef Michel Roux Junior (pictured) has become a household name thanks to his work as a judge on BBC’s MasterChef and, to a lesser extent, his series of wellreceived, no-nonsense cookbooks. He’s but one of many internationallyrenowned chefs who’ll be fetching up in the capital next month for Taste Of Dublin 2014, a celebration of the city’s restaurant scene that also doffs its cap to major players on the international culinary stage. As such, Roux Junior will join Michelinmeriting stars such as Simon Hulston (The

A number of familiar names from closer to home – Darina Allen, Clodagh McKenna, Kevin Dundon and Ross Lewis among them – will join these and other bigwigs for a series of demos, talks and cook-offs across the four-day event. As ever, visitors can sample the wares from an ever-expanding roster of local restaurants with stalls from dozens of established favourites and newcomers, such as Chapter One, Diep Le Shaker, Saba and The Green Hen; there’s also a plethora of thirstquenching options in the form of Celtic Whiskey, Dublin

A number of experts, or ‘sconsperts’ if you will, have whittled this list down to ten and the public can now vote for their favourite by visiting www.goodalls.ie before Jun 6. The future of cycling: The teched-up Vanhawks Valour
A ride like no other
BACK in 1985, a television show called Street Hawk had just hit screens. This was followed by the Raleigh Vektar, a BMX bike featuring a speedometer, FM radio and a sound console. If you had one you were hot tamale… for the short period before it got nicked, writes James Day. This retro-hipster’s wet dream is now an ultra-rare collector’s item but fast-forward 30 years and a new gadget-laden bike is ready to knock that digital watch on two wheels off its forks. The Vanhawks Valour is the world’s first smart bike designed for the urban commuter. Packed with sensors for tracking performance, it can connect to iOS and Android devices, or a Pebble smartwatch, to offer route navigation via LED lights on the handlebars, even suggesting a

way to avoid steep hills. Those handlebars also vibrate to warn you of objects in your blind spot, thanks to something called integrated haptic feedback. The bike can even act as a realtime beacon of information for other urban commuters by communicating data on potholes, roadworks and traffic conditions. Unlike the Vektar, if your Valour is stolen, your smartphone will notify you of its last known whereabouts – but this is only
triggered if it passes another Valour, so you’d better hope we all buy one. Finally, you can charge up all these gadgets on the go via the Valour’s front-wheel dynamo. It doesn’t have an electric motor, so you still need to put in the pedal power, but it weighs just 7.2kg. It’s made from ultra-light carbon fibre – the same material used to make the McLaren P1 supercar – and the saddle, grips and pedals have all been designed to relieve pressure on everything from your buttocks to the back of your neck. You can be the proud owner of one now in return for pledging a very reasonable CAN$1,049 (around €700) plus shipping; this Kickstarter crowdfunded project needed €75,000 to put it into production – and at the last count had already quadrupled that total.

Scientists advise us to turn off our phones at night because the screen’s blue light makes us think it’s morning and keeps us awake. Now a boffin at Canada’s Simon Fraser University has turned this thinking on its head. Tap the ‘Put Me To Sleep’ button, close your eyes and listen to audio prompts for things to think of to help you drift off rather than keep you distracted – think reindeers and rowing boats rather than Beyoncé and Brad Pitt.
Pointless (iOS/Android, €1.79)
When Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? transferred to mobile gaming without much Tarrant, nobody seemed to mind. Pointless, on the other hand, really doesn’t work without Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman, so it’s pleasing to see them play a large part in the Pointless app, now on Android. They guide you through being a single player or playing with friends and you can even challenge other fans via Facebook.
Adobe Voice (iOS, free)
Want to tell a story but have the artistic ability of a three-toed sloth? Adobe Voice makes creating animated videos easy. Whether a children’s story or work presentation, record what you want to say and Voice will suggest a soundtrack and pictures to bring it to life. Sounds odd, but basically you just pick the type of presentation you’re making, record it and then select images to go with it. And if you hate the sound of your own voice, an analyser will polish it for you. It’s iPad-only for now but, if successful, expect a roll-out across other platforms. jD

She is suspended from the word ‘parking’, which has been altered to say ‘park’. ‘That’s a banksy,’ says the elderly parking attendant. When checking into The ace, la’s most hyped new boutique hotel, the journey clearly begins way before you enter its doors. The ace is an establishment that put its towel on the real estate sun lounger before anyone else arrived at the pool. Madigan to miss out on tour of Argentina by DAnny HOgAn
Ian MaDIGan has been left out of Ireland’s summer tour to argentina as head coach Joe Schmidt selected four uncapped stars in a 30man squad. Leinster playmaker Madigan has missed out, with Schmidt instead opting to take just two specialist fly-halves – Racing Metro’s Johnny Sexton and Ulster’s Paddy Jackson. Former Leinster boss Schmidt said Madigan will tour Romania with the Emerging Ireland squad, along with Munster’s fast-improving outside-half Ian Keatley. Robbie Diack, Rob Herring, James Cronin and Kieran Marmion are the four uncapped tourists heading to argentina next month. Cian Healy, Gordon D’arcy, Sean O’Brien and Tommy Bowe have been handed a break in the summer, with Schmidt conscious of an arduous build-up to Rugby World Cup 2015. ‘We believe to only take two scrum-halves

make international debuts this summer. Prop Cronin and half-back Marmion have also been handed chances to shine, while Darren Cave and Robbie Henshaw will battle it out to succeed retired Brian O’Driscoll at outside centre. Schmidt admitted it would be vital to hand a number of senior stars a rest this summer, with the World Cup next autumn already hurtling into view. Sean Cronin and Dan Tuohy are two more left at home after battling injury for much of the campaign.
‘It’s really just player management,’ Schmidt said. ‘There are guys who have had continuous niggly injuries that are going to be given a good amount of time in the pre-season to recover from those. ‘Obviously Sean (O’Brien) has come back (after shoulder surgery) and played very few minutes. It was a discussion I had with both players (O’Brien and Bowe), and there are a number of others who we would feel are better served by getting a window to fully recover.’
Carr sees no opposition to Dublin’s dominance Dublin legend Tommy Carr believes the All-ireland champions will ‘mow down’ every team in leinster – including laois, writes Paul Keane. Slow starting laois eventually burned off Wicklow in Sunday’s first-round to secure a June 8 leinster quarter-final showdown with holders Dublin. but Carr isn’t optimistic about the O’Moore County’s chances, suggesting they may only be competitive until half-time. The ex-Dublin manager and captain is adamant that ‘there’s nothing to touch Dublin in leinster’ and laois are no exception. ‘let’s call a spade a spade – Dublin are going to absolutely mow down anything in leinster,’ said Carr. ‘The only way Dublin are going to get caught by laois

‘The thing is Ian hasn’t had a lot of game time recently’ would be very, very difficult, so we have gone for three scrum-halves,’ said Schmidt, explaining Madigan’s omission. ‘To go with six halves would have been a real tightening of numbers. The thing for Ian is he hasn’t had a lot of game time recently. ‘I have had a really good discussion with him. He is going to come in and train with us, but he will go on the emerging tour and that will give him and the likes of Ian Keatley time to get game time over there. see any team around with the pace and the power and the mobility of Dublin. That’s not me being biased towards Dublin, that’s being frank and factual.’ Carr says laois’s best chance of troubling the back-to-back league champions is by employing a defensive game plan. ‘The only way laois could do it is if they play like Donegal,’ he continued. ‘because if you can’t attack very efficiently and be absolutely deadly at it, then the only other option is to try and stop the other team scoring. ‘i think they’ll be competitive for the first ten or 15 minutes, even until half-time perhaps, because Dublin can be a little bit jumpy at times, a bit erratic. ‘but on their day, there’s nothing to touch Dublin in leinster.’
Carr, currently in charge of the Westmeath minors, believes that Colm begley will line out for laois against Dublin. The former Aussie Rules player was axed for the Wicklow match after playing for Parnell’s in the Dublin club championship last Wednesday evening. O Flatharta admitted that begley was in an ‘awkward position’ because he’s employed as a coach at the club. but Carr pulled no punches and blamed begley for leaving O Flatharta with no choice. ‘i’ve heard everyone saying, “it’s unfortunate for Colm” but he played for his club within five days of a Championship match that laois were preparing nine months for. WORLD Cup organisers insist an incomplete roof at Sao Paulo’s Itaquerao Stadium will not affect it hosting matches when the tournament begins next month. Constructors completing the project have admitted they will not finish the intended design until after the tournament, but the event’s local organising committee has stressed this will not be a problem. The Itaquerao Stadium will host the opening match between Brazil and Croatia on June 12. On Sunday it underwent its final test by staging a Brazilian league match which was affected by rain and hail storms forcing those among the restricted crowd of 40,000 not under cover of the roof to seek shelter elsewhere. ‘The only aspect of the roof which will be unfinished is the inner liner, not impacting the effective protection of the stands,’ the local organising committee said. The stadium, which will have a capacity of nearly 70,000, has been dogged by problems since construction, the cost of which has rocketed from €117million to some €393m, began in 2011. Earlier this year a worker died while installing some of the 20,000 temporary seats required for the opening game, prompting officials to briefly halt construction after two previous fatalities at the venue late last year when a crane collapsed.
