200m eBay users hit by hack attack ROUGH LOVE: Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy yesterday announced he had broken off his engagement to Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, just days after they sent out wedding invitations ‘The problem is mine’: Page 5 PicTure: AP

MORE than 200million eBay users were told last night to change all of their passwords amid fears their personal data might have been stolen in a major cyber attack. Every one of the online auction site’s customers around the world will be asked to reset their logins after hackers broke into a database containing encrypted passwords, names, email and home addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth. They were also being urged to change logins on all other sites where they used the same password. Paul Martini, of iboss Network Security, said the huge amount of data held by the site made it a ‘potential gold mine’. But he warned: ‘The damage could well have already been done, as the time lag between the cyber breach and the discovery of the breach is in the months.’ The hackers were said to have ‘compromised’ log-ins belonging to a small number

of eBay staff to gain access to its corporate network. It was first detected two weeks ago, but an investigation showed it probably happened between late February and early March. Ebay, which has 14million active users in Ireland and the UK, said it was unable to say how many users’ details were accessed. It insisted there was no evidence financial or credit card details had been compromised. Data from PayPal, the payment service owned by eBay, is stored separately and is not affected. But IT security experts, who described eBay as ‘the golden goose of hacking targets’, warned users had been left vulnerable to phishing scams and identity fraud. Michela Menting, of ABI Research, said: ‘It remains to be seen whether the defence and response mechanisms in place will stand up to scrutiny now that the attack has been publicised.’

Task force to Union to ballot for strike after Irish Rail proposal rejected assess plight of students A JOINT task force is to be set up ‘aimed at protecting genuine students’ who have been affected by the recent closure of a number of private language colleges, education minister Ruairí Quinn has said after five such institutions closed in recent weeks. The task force will be jointly chaired by officials from the departments of education and justice. It aims to coordinate efforts to protect foreign students affected by the closures, and to accommodate them in other colleges. It will meet for the first time tomorrow. Mr Quinn said: ‘We take a strong view of the impact these private college closures have and also to protect our reputation as a quality destination for international students.’

SIPTU members at Irish Rail are to be balloted on strike action after narrowly rejecting a Labour Court recommendation. Siptu’s Paul Cullen said: ‘Our members have found this recommendation as it currently stands unacceptable.’

The Labour Court plan called for pay cuts of between 1.7 per cent to 6.1 per cent for a 28-month period and that during that period the company should be prevented from seeking any additional reductions in terms or conditions. Irish Rail had accumulated

losses between 2008 and 2014 of just under €150million, the recommendation said. In a statement last night, Irish Rail said it ‘regretted’ the plan have not been supported by Siptu. It added that it will consider the outcomes when ballots of TEEU/

Unite and the National Bus and Rail Union members – now underway – are concluded. Meanwhile, Transport Minister Leo Varadkar and junior minister Alan Kelly both expressed ‘disappointment’ at the results of the Siptu ballot.

A STUDENT has avoided prison after he punched a pedestrian over a ‘rather silly row’ about who had right of way on a footpath. Philip Maloney, 22, admitted to assaulting Gavin Clarke causing him harm at Camden Row on February 10, 2012. Judge Terence O’Sullivan said it had been a ‘significant, potentially fatal assault’ which developed from a ‘rather silly row’ over who had right of way on a footpath in a car park. He sentenced Maloney, a business student at Terenure College, to 100 hours of community service in lieu of a three-month jail term. Maloney, of Stanaway Road, Crumlin, also handed over €2,000 as a token of his remorse. The court heard that Mr Clarke, 29, fell backwards and hit his head on the ground after Maloney punched him once in the mouth. He suffered concussion and lacerations to the lips and had to get 12 stitches in the mouth. Garda Garvan Ware told Dublin Circuit Criminal Court Mr Clarke had been out walking when a car cut across him to drive into a car park. Mr Clarke tapped on the window to indicate that he should have had right of way. He said the driver got out, walked over and punched him in the face. Mr Clarke fell backwards and lay unresponsive on the ground with blood coming from his mouth and face. In a victim impact statement, Mr Clarke said the assault had changed his perception of socialising and that he has become more cynical of his social environment. Judge O’Sullivan said he accepted Maloney’s apology as genuine and said ‘I think he has learnt his lesson’.

Trial of Anglo’s FitzPatrick put on hold until February ThE trial of former Anglo Irish Bank chairman Sean FitzPatrick on charges of failing to tell the bank’s auditors about loans he received has been put back to February next year. Yesterday at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, counsel for FitzPatrick applied to delay the start of the trial, which was originally fixed for October 7 next. Michael O’higgins SC also said the previous trial that ended last month had attracted an enormous amount of publicity, and that there should be a fade factor in place to allow the next trial to take place in a more tranquil context. Relisting the trial, expected to last two months, for February 2, 2015, Judge Mary Ellen Ring set a new pre-trial hearing for December 1.

FitzPatrick: New trial date FitzPatrick, 65, of Whitshed Road, Greystones, Co Wicklow, faces 12 counts of failing to disclose to auditors Ernst & Young the true value of loans worth at least €139million given to him or people connected to him, by Irish Nationwide Building Society from 2002 to 2007 while he was an officer of the bank.

‘Wozzilroy’ part as Rory is hit by the wedding yips GOLFER Rory McIlroy has pulled the plug on his wedding to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki days after they sent out the invitations. The 25-year-old double major winner decided to end their twoyear relationship, admitting that ‘the problem is mine’. In a statement, he added: ‘The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.’ He also wished his Danish ex, a former women’s world No.1, ‘all the happiness she deserves’. He added: ‘There is no right way

by NICOLE LE MARIE to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.’ McIlroy was close to tears when questioned about the split at a press conference ahead of this weekend’s BMW PGA Championship. Asked if it would be hard to focus at the tournament, the Northern Irish star replied: ‘I’m not going to lie, it’s going to be very difficult. ‘It was mutual and amicable and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. ‘It’s time to move on and I think I’ve said all that I need to say.’

The couple, dubbed Wozzilroy, announced their engagement on new year’s eve, with Wozniacki, 23, sporting a €150,000 engagement ring. McIlroy said at the time: ‘I have a feeling it is going to be a great year.’ Days before the break-up was announced, McIlroy took to Twitter to rubbish reports that the wedding was to take place in New York in August. He is now looking to dive into his golf and keep busy in the weeks ahead, hopeful his prediction will at least come true on the course.

Sale of Jackie Kennedy letters on hold

Letters: Jackie Kennedy

SECRET letters from Jacqueline Kennedy to an Irish priest have been pulled from a controversial auction. They had been expected to sell next month for around €3m. No reason has been given for the sale being cancelled but it follows an ownership dispute and questions over whether it was right to sell the deepest musings of a woman who put an enormous value on privacy. The 130 hand-written letters, which strike a remarkable confessional tone, began in 1950 and continued until the

death in 1964 of Fr Joseph Leonard, a Vincentian cleric based at All Hallows College in Dublin. All Hallows is in discussions with the Kennedys over how and where the letters should be held. A spokeswoman for the college said the auction was cancelled at the behest of its directors and the Vincentian Fathers. The letters were due to be sold by Sheppard’s Irish Auction House, of Durrow, Co Laois after being discovered when rare books were being valued for sale.

Every Skittle helps: Tesco to remove sweets

Students are ‘drinking more in bid to sober up’

by AIDAN RADNEDGE

PiCture: AP

CAFFEINE has long been relied upon as a hangover cure following a heavy night out. But rather than reaching for a coffee on a hazy morning, many young drinkers are adding energy drinks to alcohol – wrongly assuming it will help them to sober up quickly. A ‘surprising’ number of teenagers believe drinks such as Red Bull counteract the effects of alcohol. As a result, they drink more and get drunker than usual – increasing the risk of injury. According to research from Australia, the main reason teenagers drink alcohol with energy drinks is because it gives them a ‘buzz’ rather than for reasons of fashion or taste. The study’s author, Nic Droste, said: ‘Alcohol and energy drink users had higher blood alcohol concentration readings.’ He found that those who used this combination to sober up were at a greater risk of experiencing alcohol-related injuries and harm. Mr Droste is now calling for campaigns to target teenagers who are unaware of the dangers of with mixing alcohol and energy drinks.

TESCO is to stop selling sweets and chocolate at checkouts in all stores – in what it claims is an industry first. The supermarket giant found that two in three parents believed confectioneryfree tills would help them make healthier choices for themselves and their children. Racks of sweets low enough for youngsters to grab near tills will also go, with healthier products in their place. ‘We all know how easy it is to be tempted by sugary snacks at checkouts,’ said Tesco boss Philip Clarke. ‘We’ve already removed billions of calories from our soft drinks, sandwiches and ready meal ranges by changing the recipes to reduce sugar, salt and fat.’ The chain first removed confectionery from checkouts at its larger stores 20 years ago. The new policy, which comes into force in December, will apply to every branch in Ireland and the UK, including its Metro and Express outlets. Earlier this year, Lidl confirmed it was banning sweets and chocolate from checkouts at all of its 600 British stores.

n GROCERY giant Aldi is creating 450 jobs in Ireland as it opens seven new stores. Recruitment has begun for positions, including area and store managers, assistant managers and sales assistants. The German retailer, which employs around 2,400 here, had a 22 per cent jump in sales since last year. Along with cut-price rival Lidl they control more than a 17 per cent share of Ireland’s multi-billion-euro grocery market. Tills where sugary snacks are featured prominently have been labelled ‘guilt lanes’ by obesity campaigners. Many parents believe the ‘pester power’ they cause is frustrating and avoidable. Martin Higgins, of safefood, said: ‘This move by Tesco echoes the very practical messages we have been advocating in our childhood obesity campaign and is a powerful recognition of how “pester power” and impulse-buying affect the food choices we make every day.’

KEN ROGAN embarks on a biscuity-themed game of Call My Bluff, but only succeeds in getting himself into an uncontrollable sweat. Again.

S

o where does the word ‘hobnobbing’ come from, I hear you not asking? That’s right people, it’s Thursday, the day we question the very nature of questions, like some D-list philosophers playing a cosmic game of ‘Call my Bluff’. To wit: Hobnobbing derives from the ancient art of eating oat cakes to advance one’s social or professional cause, while smiling through your teeth and wishing you were dead. True or bluff? Or sour grapes? Because I’m not the most natural of networkers. And yet it is occasionally my lot to walk into large rooms of strangers, collect a name badge and stand

There’s a verb for this – ‘gweezing’ – which captures the awkwardness of a situation where everyone has a vested (self) interest in discovering how useful all these other ‘stakeholders’ might be in pushing their own agenda. True or bluff? In reality, it’s corporate speeddating. And it’s hideous. So you put it off – pretend you’re on a call. Check mails. Grab cup of tea, biscuit. Hob Nobs?! Damn you, universe, stop laughing at me! OK, now bite the oat-y bullet and nervously introduce yourself to someone. Talk at them, not to them. Run out of things to say. Watch them edge away. Miley Cyrus prompted an angry backlash from fans of The Smiths after she covered one of the band’s classic tunes. The 20-year-old pop star performed a version of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out while on stage in Belfast this week – prompting furious Smiths fans to flood Twitter with disdain. One wrote: ‘You’re nowhere near talented enough to be allowed near such tunes.’ Another noted Cyrus has been covering a number of classic acts on her Bangerz world tour – and pleaded ‘just stay away from The Stones, Miley, please’.

Iggy Azalea has apologised for fluffing her lines on US show Dancing With The Stars. The 23-year-old looked confused as she stumbled over the opening lyrics to Fancy before stopping and telling the audience: ‘I’m so sorry but there’s something wrong with my ears.’ Charli XCX helped her through the track, with the Aussie rapper blaming a technical glitch for her woes. ‘I am so sorry guys! My in ears messed up and I couldn’t hear the track,’ she tweeted. ‘The dramas of live TV. S*** happens. Still really enjoyed it.’

Rita Ora proved she is still scaling the heights of pop stardom when she rocked up in a crocodile ensemble to her sister’s pad. The 23year-old Londoner topped the Jeremy Scott outfit off with a bright pink balaclava, which she covered her face with as she left the studio. Ora also announced a monster deal for her own Adidas line.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is tight-lipped about her upcoming role in Mad Max: Fury Road. The model, who plays Splendid, refused to talk about the film at a press conference in Cannes and said fans will have to wait for its release next year. ‘I can’t really talk too much about it,’ she said at a special screening of her new short film Celebrate the Moment for Magnum, shot by celebrated director Wim Wenders. But it seems like the star, who made her big screen debut in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, won’t be giving up the catwalk any time soon to dedicate herself full time to her acting career. ‘I never really set out to be an actress so for me it was always something that came by chance into my life,’ she added. ‘I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had. I wouldn’t close the door on anything. I’m open. We’ll see.’ Huntington-Whiteley stars alongside Tom Hardy as Max and Charlize Theron as Furiosa in the action flick.

Channing Tatum has described himself as a ‘highfunctioning alcoholic’. The 34-year-old Hollywood hunk says he tends to drink to ‘escape’ and is often the victim of ‘Donald Ducking’. The father-of-one explained: ‘When generally you go out and get really hammered and you end up waking up in the morning and you only have a shirt on with boots.’ But the Magic Mike star told US GQ magazine: ‘I get one shot at life, and I can say that I’ve lived a crazy one, and I’ve pushed the limit almost at every turn.’

Bieber gets on the mic in rap royalty battle Justin Bieber has been chasing credibility in Cannes while rubbing shoulders with the crème of the rap crop. The 20-year-old Baby singer acted as support for legendary rapper Rick Ross, 38, performing a cover of 2Pac’s track Dear Mama before the main man took to the stage at Gotha Club. However, Bieber’s bad boy antics were not far behind as he lingered on the sidelines and poured beer over the audience below. At the same venue earlier in the week, the singer faced off against Hollywood action man Wesley Snipes, 51, for an impromptu rap battle during a party for The Expendables 3. He has also jammed with Busta Rhymes, who was celebrating his 42nd birthday.

She said: ‘We’ve never actually spoken about that. But LA’s department of children and family services has got involved to make sure Willow is safe, according to RadarOnline. ‘Social workers will be talking with Willow,

and they also want to talk to the young man in the picture with her as well,’ a source told the website. ‘This won’t just be one or two visits with the family, and it will likely be an open investigation for at least a month, out of an abundance of caution.’ Smith, 45, and his 42year-old wife – who were unavailable for comment – are reportedly being ‘extremely co-operative’ with the investigation. Pinkett-Smith has previously accused reporters of ‘projecting their trash’ on to the picture, in which Willow is fully clothed.

Katy ‘freaked’ over meeting DJ’s folks Katy Perry has found herself single again after splitting with latest beau Diplo. The pair called it quits after a little more than a month together over her reluctance to settle down. Apparently Katy didn’t take too kindly to being asked to meet his folks. ‘Diplo broke up with her because she does not want to be in a serious relationship,’

a friend of Perry’s revealed. ‘They wanted different things.’ According to the pal, Katy, 29, ‘freaked out’ when the 35-year-old DJ said he wanted to introduce her to his parents. ‘She doesn’t want to get married again – at least not any time soon,’ the friend told In Touch Weekly. ‘It was too much, too soon.’

Jolie joins war on conflict rape

‘H

OW do I feel about someone who would force themselves on a child with the intent to destroy them, to humiliate them and cause them pain?’ asks Angelina Jolie. ‘How could I feel anything other than anger and disgust for a person who’d violently attack vulnerable, innocent people? They ought to bear the stigma and shame, not survivors.’ As special envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Jolie has travelled to Bosnia and the Democratic Republic of Congo to learn first-hand the effects of rape and sexual violence on women, men and children. ‘The thought of someone attacking and raping a child is so hard to imagine, but a huge number of victims are very young girls and boys,’ she says. ‘I met a woman in DRC who showed me a photo of a five-year old girl who’d been raped outside a police station. What does it say about us if we tolerate these crimes?’ The actress will join Britain’s for-

The kidnapping of more than 200 girls by Boko Haram militants in Nigeria has shocked the world. Ahead of a global summit in London next month to try to end sexual violence in conflict, UN special envoy Angelina Jolie tells GRAEME GREEN that those responsible should be punished... eign secretary William Hague, world leaders, military officials and NGOs at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict next month in London, the largest ever gathering of its kind. ‘This is a crime that’s affected millions of women and girls and men and boys in our lifetimes,’ said Jolie. She condemned recent events in Nigeria, where Islamist militants Boko Haram have abducted more than 200 girls. ‘In Nigeria, we’ve just seen hundreds of girls taken in a single attack by a group that’s known to kidnap children to force them into sexual slavery. ‘Trying to get the girls home is the priority. But we have to address the root causes, above all the impunity. ‘Perpetrators of these crimes think they’ll get away with it, so we have to make sure the crime doesn’t go

unpunished. We also have to ask how many other schools and schoolgirls in Nigeria and other conflict areas are vulnerable, and get ahead of the attackers.’ The UN estimates more than 200,000 people have been raped in the DRC since 1998. ‘A report on sexual violence by the UN secretary general basically listed every conflict country,’ said Anita Tiessen, deputy executive director of Unicef UK. ‘Where there was conflict, there was sexual violence.’ Tiessen has spent time with refugees in Lebanon fleeing the war in Syria, including young girls who had been raped or abused. The physical effects on children are not just frequent pregnancies. They suffer torn internal organs and often deep psychological damage. The motivation for a rapist isn’t

just sex but to inflict damage. ‘In a conflict situation, when there’s power and when people are trying to inflict pain on the people they’re trying to subdue or get rid of, then rape, torture or other forms of violence become far more acceptable in the minds of people carrying out violence,’ said Tiessen.

HAT was the case in Colombia for journalist Jineth Bedoya Lima. In 2000, she was kidnapped by paramilitaries and tortured and raped for 16 hours for reporting on their activities in the country’s civil war. ‘I realised the solution is not to stay silent,’ said Bedoya, who now works with human rights group ABColombia to combat sexual violence. ‘I decided to talk because I realised it was a crime they wanted to hide in Colombia,’ she said. The summit will also tackle the issue of sexual violence against men. ‘When I first started working in Kampala, there was no discussion at all on this issue,’ said Chris Dolan,

in male refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo have reported experiences of sexual violence

news@metroherald.ie director of the Refugee Law Project in Uganda. ‘Now we’ve opened up the discussion a bit, the numbers are way higher than we expected. The experience we have is primarily with refugees coming out of countries in the Great Lakes like Congo, Rwanda, Burundi. ‘We find somewhere between a quarter and a third of men have had some experience of sexual violence.’ Steven Kighoma, a survivor from the DRC, said: ‘It kills your spirit.’ In 2010, his family were killed by government soldiers. Three of the soldiers then raped him. Four years on, Kighoma still suffers pain, nightmares and flashbacks. Male rape is used as a weapon, instilling terror, tearing families and communities apart. Afterwards, there’s often inadequate help for victims. But shame also stops many men reporting what happened to them, especially in cultures like Congo and Uganda, where, said Kighoma, ‘there’s confusion from people about the difference between sexual violence and homosexuality’. Getting help to survivors is a key issue at the summit, as is finding ways to bring perpetrators to justice. ‘We have to create an environment where people know that if they commit these crimes they’ll be punished, because there will be teams on the ground collecting evidence against them and a judicial system that will catch up with them,’ said Jolie. ‘But we also need more protection for refugees, early warning systems when rape is happening, and armed forces trained to combat this. ‘Blame should be attached to commanders, not just foot soldiers. No one should be above the law – that’s a fundamental principle of justice.’

Private island that’s ‘a ten-minute helicopter ride from Miami’... yours for €80million

3 beds, parking for 20 boats by DANIEL BINNS

WHILE most home buyers would balk at €80million for a three-bed detached, this paradise pad comes with its own private 26-acre island. And if you fancied hosting a regatta for your shipmates then look no further as Pumpkin Key has room to dock up to 20 boats, or one megayacht if royalty should drop by. Although the main abode may seem a little pokey, the island off the coast of Florida also houses two caretaker’s cottages, a boat captain’s bolthole and planning permission for 12 more dwellings. A vast private beach and tennis courts which double up as helipads are also thrown in, along with membership of the exclusive Ocean Reef community. Russell Post, from Sotheby’s International Realty, said: ‘Pumpkin Key represents one of the most exceptional opportunities in real estate today, anywhere in the world. ‘Pumpkin Key offers the unique opportunity for privacy, while still being part of the Ocean Reef community, and just a quick tenminute helicopter ride or 50-minute boat trip to Miami.’

I’m in tune with your mood ‘New social network’ of songs and photos by AIDAn RADnEDgE FOR those sick of seeing pictures of cute kittens and smug friends online, brace yourself. From today, they’re going to be accompanied by music. Tunepics is an app that hopes to stimulate multiple senses by inviting people to share their photos while songs that signify the mood play in the background. An ‘emotion wheel’ also accompanies each image and gives a choice of 16 different feelings including ‘love’, ‘laughing’, ‘happy’, ‘moved’, ‘excited’, ‘jealous’, ‘dreaming’ and ‘heartbroken’. Tunepics founder and chief executive Justin Cooke was inspired to set up the ‘new social network’ after discussions with Will.i.am. ‘I’ve always had a fascination with music, colour, images and the weather and how they influence our mood and emotions,’ he said. ‘I want people to be able to share the depth behind the moments they

experience and to articulate all the ones they dream of having. With Tunepics, everyone can create a soundtrack to Inspired: Will.i.am their life.’ It is hoped Tunepics could help send songs by emerging artists into the charts and provide an insight into the over-riding moods and tastes of countries at any one time. Each ‘tunepic’ provides a 30second sample of each song, alongside a link to buy it on iTunes. Selections can also be shared on Twitter and Facebook. Other early adopters include chef Jamie Oliver, actress Kate Bosworth and fashion chain Asos. The app can be downloaded now for free on iPhones and iPads from the App Store, with an Android version to follow later this year.

Mubarak jailed for pandas jet in to ease stealing state cash tension over MH370

EgypT: Hosni Mubarak has been convicted of embezzling public funds and jailed for three years. The ousted president’s two sons, Gamal and Alaa, were jailed for four years each in the same case. Mubarak, 86, who faces a retrial over the death of protesters during the 2011 uprising, used millions earmarked for refurbishing official palaces on improving his family’s private homes.

MALAysiA: Two giant pandas have been delivered by China after a month’s delay – imposed out of respect for relatives of passengers on missing flight MH370. Male Fu Wa and female Feng Yi were flown into Kuala Lumpur on a ten-year loan to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic ties. The links were strained when the Malaysian jet vanished in March with 239 mainly Chinese passengers aboard.

TAiWAN: Four commuters were stabbed to death and 21 injured as a knifeman went on the rampage on a subway train. Two men and two women were killed by the 21-year-old student who struck on Taipei’s Banqiao line at the start of yesterday’s evening rush hour, police said. The attacker said he wanted to ‘do something big’, according to officers who arrested him at the scene.

KOREA: Paul McCartney has pulled out of the rest of his tour of East Asia owing to illness. The 71year-old yesterday announced the cancellation of next week’s show in Seoul – a day after scrapping gigs in Japan. ‘I was really looking forward to playing in South Korea for the first time and I’m sorry to be letting fans down,’ said Sir Paul, who is due to perform in the US next month.

He was later stripped of those titles for doping. A Legion of Honour official said she was unable to indicate when the decision was made to remove Armstrong’s award. ill children forced back to syria due to lack of cash

SICK and wounded Syrian children who escaped the war-torn country are being denied crucial medical treatment, a report has revealed. The influx of refugees into neighbouring Lebanon has become so great that many hospitals are turning away those most in need, because they cannot afford to care for them. Many of the estimated 1million refugees in the country have no access to health care and one in ten is forced to return to the land they left behind for treatment, Amnesty International says in its Agonising Choices report. It highlighted the case of Arif, a boy of 12 whose burned legs became infected owing to a lack of treatment. He needs 13 operations

but a lack of money means these cannot be carried out. It also reported cases where refugees with long-term illnesses, such as cancer, were forced to shuttle between Syria and Lebanon every week for treatment. One father told how he risks his life by passing through areas where the civil war is raging so his nine-year-old son, who has leukaemia, can get the treatment he needs. Lebanon has received less than a fifth of the €1.2billion UN aid it needs to treat the sick and injured, claims Amnesty. ‘Syrian refugees there are suffering as a direct result of the interna-

The United Nations high commissioner for refugees is supposed to fill the gaps but, owing to a lack of funding, has had to ask some who qualify for help to pay a quarter of the fees. The UN is appealing for €5billion in aid relief to tackle the Syrian crisis. Last year, it received 70 per cent of the €4billion needed to help families. The US (€850million) and EC (€440million) are the largest donors to the UN fund.

What did you make of Jay-Z the man? i already knew a great

He is a consummate businessman and part of the equation is that he will make money, if possible, but he will not get involved in something if he doesn’t believe he understands it. He is not a quick buck artist – he seeks to offer people something of quality, or an opportunity or a transferable idea. He is not just cashing in; there is a level of integrity for the businesses he delves into. And that impressed me.

This season, the much-maligned mom jeans have found themselves at the height of fashion – see Chloe Sevigny rocking them, p.15. The good thing? Nowadays there’s no excess crotch fabric or camel toe issue. Mom jeans are slimmer than a boyfriend jean. They tend to come with a straight leg and sit comfortably around the belly button. It’s that high fit we like: not only are they perfect styled with this season’s crop tops but they’re ideal for hiding a muffin top. Nobody is doing them quite like Topshop, who have a whole range in every shade – but the best styles are the vintage washes.

It’s difficult to remember a time without boyfriend jeans (worn by Mila Kunis, left). Junya Watanabe brought them back into the spotlight with his patchwork styles and the cuts are among the best-selling at Gap and Topshop. For those prepared to always wear them with heels or are naturally blessed in the height department, masculine styles work perfectly. Height is vital to balance out voluminous proportions. But if you have a petite frame, you’re in luck: the boyfriend shape has become slightly more tailored. ‘They’re great for women who can find themselves swamped by more oversized styles,’ says NetA-Porter buyer Octavia Bradford.

After bubbling away in the background for some time, ripped denim is coming to the fore. When it comes to rips, decide how far you’re willing to go. You can go the whole way with thighexposing tears teamed with a T-shirt, skater shoes, a killer leather jacket and lots of attitude. Alternatively, you can take more subtle approach with more discreet rips on the knee. The trick is to team them with classic pieces. A subtle pair with a classic blouse, tailored blazer, statement necklace and heels is perfect for work if your dress code allows.

Whether it’s thanks to supermodel Karlie Kloss and her designs for Frame Denim or images of Claudia Schiffer sporting them on the school run, flares are back. The reason they’ve become so popular is their leglengthening powers. ‘They help balance your proportions,’ says Trilogy’s Lesley Torson. ‘They look amazing on women with curves but also help create a feminine silhouette if you have narrower hips.’

Leader Bevin wins scintillating sprint cycLing Patrick Bevin took his

second stage win of this year’s An Post Rás yesterday when he edged a close bunch sprint coming into Cahirciveen on day four of the race. Retaining his lead at the top of the general classification, the New Zealand National Team rider outsprinted last year’s winner Marcin Bialoblocki and Peter Williams, who finished second and third respectively. Stage four from Charleville to Cahirciveen was pinpointed by many as the toughest of this year’s race at 183km, with ten categorised climbs. McFadden praises club’s medics after head injury

by gARETH MAkiM Fergus McFadden has hailed Leinster’s medical staff as an example to others when it comes to player welfare in the area of head injuries following his experience last weekend. McFadden, Brian O’driscoll and sean cronin were all removed from the field of play after suffering blows to the head in Leinster’s Pro12 semi-final victory over ulster as team doctors took a safetyfirst approach. That is in stark contrast to the recent furore caused by Toulouse’s decision to allow clearly groggy centre Florian Fritz back on to the

pitch in a Top14 match in France. ‘I can’t speak for other clubs, but in fairness to the medical staff with Leinster and with Ireland, they don’t take any chances with the players in that area,’ McFadden said yesterday. ‘It’s one thing playing on with a

‘Brain damage can affect you for life’ broken hand, or playing on with a tear in your hamstring, those things will heal, but your brain... you damage it and it can affect you for the rest of your life.

‘It probably did make a bit of a statement, taking the players off. I mean Brian, myself and sean cronin got taken off as a precaution and thankfully all of us were clear and we weren’t concussed, but they are chances you can’t take. ‘You look at the likes of the Fritz case, it’s scary to see players like that, in that kind of condition, and they go back out and play. ‘The fact that he fell on the ground coming off and went back on, it just didn’t look like it was managed too well. Those cases are eye-openers.’ With McFadden cleared to return to training, the Kildare man is free

to concentrate on next week’s Pro12 final against glasgow and he admits Leinster will have to significantly improve on their semifinal display if they are to defend their title. ‘We’ve a very good chance of winning it if we play well,’ he said. ‘Our attack will have to be more clinical than it was against ulster. ‘We coughed up too much ball in the first half. ‘If we play like that against glasgow, we would lose. They’ve been pretty clinical, their tails are up, they’ve won loads of games, they’ve a great coach and they’ve a game-plan which is one of the best out there.’

those has been at monaco. the British driver said: ‘every lap I do in qualifying is all done on instinct – the braking zones are done on instinct, the turning points are done on instinct. ‘that was obviously a unique experience for him [Senna], and it’s quite interesting how he described it. ‘Driving here is different as you have no room for error, even though you are on the limit, it’s a very unique experience. ‘a lap here never comes easily. But he also wants to learn the whole time. ‘He is always figuring out new ways that will get him that one per cent extra. it’s working really well for him so far.’ the dubs are hot favourites to account for whoever they meet in the semi-finals – as all of them will be division 1B opposition – and return to the provincial final. they will depart shortly on a training camp to Portugal. ‘We’re together, we’re eating right, for those four or five days, we’re living a professional lifestyle,’ said o’dwyer. ‘and we’re living like professional athletes.’

Jackson has been battling the problem for some time, but the injury has deteriorated and he will miss next month’s two-Test series against the Pumas. Meanwhile, Leinster playmaker Ian Madigan has been handed a reprieve for the same tour after failing to make the cut at first. Madigan was scheduled to tour Romania with the Emerging Ireland squad after Ireland head

coach Joe Schmidt opted to take just two flyhalves to Argentina. Now the 25-year-old will replace Jackson for the Tests against Argentina in Resistencia on June 7 and Tucuman on June 15. Schmidt has rested a host of frontline stars for the summer tour – but he has resisted temptation to give Johnny Sexton a break.
