Court to decide baby swap fate by ROGER WEATHERS

A COURT will rule on the future of two fouryear-old girls who were accidentally switched the day they were born and have been raised by each other’s mother. One of the mothers wants her biological daughter back, while the other wants to keep the girl she has raised. The babies were born on the same day in 2010 at the Tambo Memorial Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, but ended up being taken home by the wrong mother. The families were unaware of the mix-up until one of the women had tests when her ex-husband refused to pay child maintenance as he believed he was not the father. The mother was ‘absolutely devastated’, said her lawyer, Henk Strydom. ‘My client wants her baby back. She is the biological mother of the child.’ But the other mother wants the opposite, so North Gauteng High Court will decide. The mothers met each other and their biological daughters last year and have been attending joint therapy sessions arranged by the hospital. The court has asked the University of Pretoria’s Centre for Child Law to investigate what would be in the best interests of the children and report back to the judge in 90 days.

Caterpillar disguises itself as a snake to one day become a moth...

FROM a distance, this fat, green caterpillar would seem to be a very tasty appetiser for any predator. But should they get any closer, the tables can turn very swiftly. Far from swooping on a caterpillar, they come face to face with a snake. The neon-green bug boggles its enemies by tucking in its legs and

expanding the end of its body – which has markings that look like the face of a dangerous reptile. So well honed is its disguise, it will even act like a snake, pretending to strike if approached. Prof Daniel Janzen, a biologist from

the University of Pennsylvania, photographed the creepy-crawly as part of his work tracking caterpillars in Central America. ‘To normal people, this caterpillar might look weird and scary – but for me, it’s just a walk in the park,’ he said. ‘Every caterpillar in Costa Rica looks like something else – be it

a leaf, twig or, in this case, a slithering snake. ‘Over the years, I’ve seen and photographed so many different types of bugs, I’m never surprised – but they always interest me.’ Prof Janzen has been tracking Costa Rica’s caterpillars since 1978. He said this example – captured in

the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, a Unesco World Heritage site to the north-west of the country – was part of the Hemeroplanes family. Its disguise is designed to ward of predators while in its larval stage, before it grows into a moth. But predators can relax – while it can strike, it can’t bite.

Rail workers vote against cuts plan IRISH Rail’s cost-saving plan has had another setback after workers belonging to the National Bus and Rail Union rejected Labour Court proposals. Some 75 per cent of NBRU members rejected the plans, which allowed for pay cuts of 1.7 per cent to 6.1 per cent for a 28-month period, joining Siptu, which voted against the cuts last week by 51 per cent. The Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association, the TEEU and Unite have accepted the plan. Transport Minister Leo Varadkar and junior minister Alan Kelly said they were ‘disappointed’ at the results.

Burglar left bag of heroin behind after taking BMW by DEcLAn BREnnAn

HOUSE prices in Dublin rose by 3.1 per cent in April, and by almost 18 per cent in one year. The Central Statistics Office also found apartment prices were up 17.5 per cent, while nationally prices rose by 8.5 per cent since April 2013. Conor O’Donovan of The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland said lack of supply in the market is ‘fuelling the increase’. He called for urgent action on the Government’s 2020 strategy, which identified 2,000 hectares of zoned land for housing in Dublin, with the capacity for 30,000 units.

A BURGLAR was caught by gardaí after he left a bag containing €300 worth of heroin in the house he had broken into. Forensic investigators found Craig McCarthy’s DNA on the plastic bag and on a screwdriver which were both found in the house after the burglary. McCarthy, 27, of Rossfield Park, Tallaght, admitted to burglary and possession of drugs at Rose Park, Kill of the Grange, Dublin, on October 31, 2012. Jewellery, a BMW car, and a laptop were stolen from the house. Judge Mary Ellen Ring imposed a fiveand-a-half-year sentence, but suspended the last 18 months. The court heard that McCarthy has 166 previous convictions, including burglary, assault, criminal damage and five for dangerous driving, Detective Garda David Jennings told the court that the stolen jewellery was found stuffed in a sock which was hidden under the accelerator pedal when he stopped McCarthy in a car in the Tallaght area on the same date as the burglary. After the sentence was handed down, defence lawyer Sarah Jane Callaghan said such a lengthy sentence would ensure her client would fall back into addiction.

‘No pattern in sentencing for sexual assault’

Picture: jason clarke

A HIGH COURT judge has said, according to his ‘limited’ research, there is no discernable pattern in sentencing for indecent assault offences. During a sentence hearing at the Central Criminal Court, Justice Garrett Sheehan said sentences for such offences range from suspended terms up to six years in jail. The judge made the comments while sentencing a 54-year-old Galway man for the sexual abuse of his sister-in-law 30 years ago. He imposed a four-year sentence, with 18 months suspended, on condition he undergoes a sex offenders’ programme. The man is currently serving a separate four-year sentence imposed last year for the rape of his eight-year-old sister when he was 17. Last month he admitted six counts of indecent assault against his wife’s sister, then aged 12 in 1983.

n A JUDGE has criticised the Director of Public Prosecutions for accepting an attempted rape plea, which he said was ‘inconsistent’ with the evidence before the jury. Justice Barry White imposed a non-custodial sentence on a 27-year-old man from Dublin’s northside who has an intellectual difficulty and had been charged with rape in June 2012. The court heard yesterday the Director of Public Prosecutions believed the abuse lay in the ‘upper middle range’ of seriousness, but refused to say what sentence it warranted. The judge said he could not see a pattern in sentencing for indecent assaults but noted the severest punishments seemed to be imposed on those who contested their trials and were convicted. He said almost all sentences had a partially suspended element.

Official accused of ‘stonewalling’ A SENIOR public official has been accused of ‘stonewalling’ an Oireachtas inquiry into alleged Garda wrongdoing. Brian Purcell, secretary general of the Department of Justice, yesterday repeatedly refused to answer questions from TDs and senators about his role in the resignation of former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan. Meanwhile Garda chief Noirin O’Sullivan has denied claims by TDs that whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe is still being harassed.

One year for abducting son A FATHER who abducted his young son and flew him to Egypt during an access visit has been jailed for one year. The Egyptian man, who was living in Dublin at the time, admitted abducting the child on April 14, 2012, in defiance of a court order. The parents of the threeyear-old were estranged from each other when the man sent a text to the boy’s mother the day after the abduction saying: ‘We’re in Egypt now’, Judge Mary Ellen Ring heard.

Burton confirms leadership bid but Howlin’s out of Labour race LABOUR deputy leader Joan Burton has confirmed she has her eye on the party’s top job. Declaring her candidacy for the leadership position, the Dublin TD said she wants to lead the Labour Party ‘to its own recovery as an equal and active partner for the full remaining term of this Government and to ensure enough representation in the subsequent general election to enable us to form part of the next government’. However, Meath East TD Dominic Hannigan, who is also considering running, said the new

Burton: Eye on the top job leader should come from ‘a new generation, with fresh thinking and resolve’. Meanwhile, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin has ruled himself out of a

leadership bid, as has Dublin TD Kevin Humphreys. Nominations for both the leader and deputy leader positions close on Tuesday. Separately, a full recheck of ballots is continuing in the Midlands North-West constituency. It was requested by Fianna Fáil’s Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher after he was just 275 votes behind Independent Marian Harkin for the final seat. Independent Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, Fine Gael’s Mairead McGuinness and Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy have already been elected.

Louis Tomlinson, 22, and Zayn Malik, 21, were caught on film allegedly smoking marijuana while on tour in Peru last month. If proven it may mean they will be banned from the US. One of their entourage also referred to ‘chicken’ – thought to be slang for a kilogram of cocaine. He said: ‘We got chicken in Chile’, while Malik and Tomlinson rejoiced at the news. Cowell swung the group’s legal team into action to track down the culprits who leaked the footage, which appeared to have been recorded on Tomlinson’s phone. ‘This matter is in the hands of our lawyers’, said a band spokesman. Don’t fancy driving? Why not just Google it instead

by DAniEL binns

GOOGLE is to build up to 100 prototypes of self-driving cars and hopes to begin testing them this summer. The internet giant – which has previously experimented with making conventional cars ‘driverless’ – said its in-house design had no brake, accelerator nor steering wheel. Company co-founder Sergey Brin, who has taken a spin in an early version, said: ‘The experience feels different. You just sit there, no wheel, no pedals – for me it was very relaxing.’ Google said the cars, which will find their way using satnav technology, can improve road safety by taking driver error out of the equation. They will rely on sensors to keep clear of other vehicles and be limited, initially, to a top speed of 40kph. The prototypes will be basic, ‘designed for learning, not luxury’, containing just two seats, storage space and stop and go buttons. ‘Clearly, legislation and consumer acceptance will determine the scale and speed of these innovations appearing on our roads,’ a motor industry representative said.

Most drivers would fail a retake over bad habits MORE than three quarters of experienced drivers would fail their test if they retook it today, a study has shown. Bad habits picked up over years at the wheel combined with complacency and a lack of concentration would have instructors reaching for their red pen, the experiment set up by an insurance company showed. One driver committed ten major faults during their re-test, meaning they would have been failed ten times over, while another managed 42 minors. Direct Line’s motor director Rob Miles said: ‘While drivers gain experience with age, it’s easy to pick up bad habits that could be potentially dangerous and put other road users at risk.’ Mr Miles said motorists had developed an over-reliance on driving aids, with 68 per cent admitting they wouldn’t hit the road without them.

A Compliance Professional Perspective I completed the Professional Diploma in Compliance in 2012 and was delighted to be named as Top Placed Candidate for that year. I work in financial services for a small life insurance company. My key functions within the company are on the compliance and legal side of claims and policy management. As I have a legal background, I wanted to further my studies with a course closely related to it, which could provide me with a new qualification to help me advance in my career. It’s probably stating the obvious to say that compliance, regulation and business ethics are playing a more central role in

financial services these days, and rightly so. This has hugely positive implications for my career as qualified and knowledgeable compliance people will be in demand more and more as time goes on, creating more opportunities for people like me who have undertaken further study to climb the career ladder.

“ I feel I gained enormously from this experience. And it was easier than I thought it would be as it’s mainly done online and through networking events. ”

Throughout my course of study, I gained a better understanding of business ethics principles, the regulatory environment that is so important to the whole area of financial services, and the basics of building strong compliance and governance into the everyday workings of a financial services business, large or small.

I got great support, especially through the provision of learning supports, and that was a great help to me in achieving strong results. I gained a better understanding of how regulation and compliance work at the heart of a business, as well as how to implement stronger compliance programmes designed to strengthen businesses.

From my own career perspective, my goal was to put myself in a position where I would be considered for bigger roles within my own organisation, as I believe it demonstrates my commitment to the job and to this particular area of expertise.

De Niro: I bet life was tough for my gay dad Robert De Niro says he wishes his mother had felt able to speak to him about his gay father’s struggles with his sexuality. The actor said painter Robert De Niro Sr – who divorced Virginia Admiral after realising he was attracted to men – must have found it hard to accept. ‘He probably was conflicted, being from that generation and especially coming from a small town upstate,’ the 70-year-old

New Yorker said. ‘I was not aware, much, of it. I wish we had spoken about it much more. My mother didn’t want to talk about things in general, and you’re not interested when you’re a certain age.’ The star, who is releasing a TV documentary about his father’s work, added he should have raised the sex issue with his late parents. ‘I want my kids to realise you sometimes have to do things now instead of later,’ he told Out magazine.

Nicole ‘pulls sickie’ to escape Grace grilling Her new film has been panned by the critics, so is it just a coincidence that Nicole Kidman has been hit with an illness that stops her talking about her role? The 46-year-old has cancelled plans to promote Grace Of Monaco in Britain after being struck down with bronchitis. It comes after the Australian actress shelved an appearance on the Graham Norton Show earlier this week. Doctors have forbidden the star from flying to London to give her time to recover from the illness. ‘She has to stay put in Nashville,’ her publicist said.

Burn or not, indoor tans can be risky INDOOR tanning can trigger deadly skin cancer even if it causes no burns, a study shows. Any change in skin colour is a biological response indicating damage from UV radiation, say scientists. Malignant melanoma sufferers – the most dangerous form of skin cancer – with no history of sunburn were four times more likely to have used sunbeds than disease-free participants, the study of more than 2,200 people showed. Dr DeAnn Lazovich, from the University of Minnesota, said: ‘A common reason stated for tanning indoors is to prevent sunburn. Our results expand upon the current scientific evidence by demonstrating that indoor tanning, even when used in a way that does not produce burns, is a risk factor for melanoma.’

Rolf’s daughter ‘smashed art’ after hearing of affair

by DOMINIC YEATMAN

ROLF HARRIS received a ‘furious’ reaction from his daughter when she learnt about the affair he was having with her best friend, a court heard yesterday. The 84-year-old was confronted by Bindi Harris in the late 1990s after her friend told her about the tryst. He was in Australia at the time. Harris told the jury: ‘When I came back, she had smashed the paintings I had given her. She was furious.’ Prosecutor Sasha Wass asked the entertainer about her reaction. He replied: ‘She had a huge row with me about the affair. I believed she started the conversation – I can’t remember. I blank it out my mind.’ On his second day of evidence at Southwark crown court, Harris admitted he was good at concealing his dark side. Ms Wass said: ‘This case is to decide whether underneath your friendly and lovable exterior there is a darker side lurking.

‘Dark side’: Rolf Harris outside the court with daughter Bindi, who ‘furiously’ reacted to his affair PICTURE: REUTERS

The issue we have to fathom from this court is how dark that dark side really is.’ The TV host was asked about a girl, then 13, who claimed he indecently assaulted her several times. Harris confessed he admired her in a sexual way – admitting when he had complimented the teenager on her bikini, he meant her body. Ms Wass went on: ‘Once we work out that you did see [the victim] in a sexual light during that holiday, everything else she says becomes realistic, doesn’t it?’ ‘Not as far as I’m concerned,

because it never happened,’ he replied. Ms Wass claimed the sexual encounters with his daughter’s friend – which Harris claimed happened when she was an adult – were not consensual. ‘This was child abuse, grooming and you effectively psychologically dominated her into womanhood,’ she claimed. Harris, from Berkshire, England, denies 12 counts of indecent assault. He is also accused of abusing four women, aged seven to 19, between 1968 and 1986. The trial continues.

Le Pen has secured initial backing from representatives of right-wing parties in four other EU nations: The Dutch PVV of Geert Wilders, the Austrian FPO, Italy’s Northern League, and Belgium’s Flemish Interest. But to form a parliamentary group, a step that would guarantee

more speaking time and financial support, representatives from two more countries must join with the National Front. There were unprecedented victories gained by the far right in last week’s European Union elections. Though united by the aversion to all things EU, far-right parties like Le Pen’s also want to have a strong voice in the European legislature. ‘We will try to stop any new advance of the EU,’ Le Pen said. Le Pen is still two parties short, and the other big Eurosceptic election winner, Nigel Farage of Britain’s Ukip, who already belongs to a parliamentary group and has ruled out an alliance with the National Front. Le Pen’s party, which came out on top in France in Sunday’s election, sending shockwaves across Europe, will be sending France’s largest contingent to the parliament with 24 politicians.

A living toy isn’t pie in the Skylander T

HREE years ago, children had to close their eyes and imagine their teddy bears and dolls had magically sprung to life. That was before Skylanders came along. The computer game franchise transformed the way its target market viewed their toys. Instead of wishing their action figures were real, children could simply pop them on a piece of plastic (known as the Portal of Power) and, through radio frequency identification technology, watch them appear as a playable character on their TV. It’s a simple idea that’s been very lucrative. Since Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure was released in 2011, the franchise has exploded. Two follow-ups, Skylanders: Giants and Skylanders: Swap Force, have helped the series amass more

than €1.5billion in global sales for the series’ publisher Activision. Last month saw plans revealed for the launch of Skylanders Trap Team, which will be available to buy in October on a number of platforms, including the Xbox One and PS4. This time, as well as placing Skylanders toys on the portal to beam them into the game, players can catch and trap villains and bring them out of the screen and into the physical world. This is achieved through the Traptanium Portal and a built-in audio speaker that allows trapped characters to communicate with the

player. The trap lights up with the villain’s banter. Trapped characters are ‘contained’ within a crystal that plugs into the portal. They then become a playable character in the game, or part of the player’s Trap Team. ‘What if instead of just bringing the toys to life in a video game, you actually had the power to take something from the digital world of Skylands and transport it into the physical world?’ asked John Coyne, a senior vice president at Activision. ‘What if you could reverse the magic? next week. Disney uses characters from films such as Pirates Of The Caribbean, Monsters and The Incredibles. Coyne said: ‘We’re very proud that we invented this category with Skylanders and we want to keep moving it forward.’ But Christopher Dring, editor of games magazine MCV, said Disney Infinity posed a significant challenge. ‘Activision’s best defence against these licences is in making a good game with some clever new ideas. ‘Trap Team looks good, with impressive visuals, and the idea of trapping villains is a clever one that holds promise. ‘But the cost of entry is still relatively expensive and the Skylanders don’t yet have the appeal of Iron Man or Mickey Mouse,’ he said. But Reiche believes toysto-life ‘is here to stay’ and added: The ne new game will introduce more than in ‘It’s like saying, “We’ve got colour TV – are kids ever collectable Skylanders co going to get sick of characters char as well as colour?”’

ploring and bring them into the physical world. It really is the genie in the bottle.’ The new bunch of characters range from Snap Shot, a crossbow-bearing blue lizard-like creature, to Chopper – a dinosaur with helicopter blades. Paul Reiche, co-founder and creative director of developer Toys For Bob, said some Skylanders take dozens of drawings before they’re right, while others need only one sketch. ‘Sometimes you’ll start on ideas and completely follow your imagination and your whimsy and then find the character that everyone all of a sudden says, “Yeah, I want to play that guy”,’ he said. Since Skylanders pioneered the toys-to-life genre, Disney has also jumped into the ring. It is expected to announce the second game in its Infinity series

Obama pays tribute to best-selling author Maya Angelou, who has died aged 86

Poet and pioneer FROM humble beginnings, she became friends with presidents, civil rights leaders and the leading lights of the entertainment world. And many were in mourning yesterday after the death at 86 of American best-selling author, poet and activist Maya Angelou. President Barack Obama said: ‘Michelle and I join millions around the world in remembering one of

by nICOLE LE MARIE the brightest lights of our time – a brilliant writer, a fierce friend, and a truly phenomenal woman.’ Despite her elite circle of friends, Angelou – born Marguerite Johnson in St Louis – came from humble beginnings. She was best known for her 1970 autobiography I Know Why The

There’s no profanity,’ she said. ‘It speaks about surviving, and it really doesn’t make ogres of many people.’ Raped by her mother’s boyfriend at the age of seven, she did not speak for years afterwards and learned by listening and reading. Angelou became a single mother at 17 and danced in a strip club before the first of three marriages. She would go on to befriend figures such as Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela and the Rev Martin Luther King, Jr. Her acting earned an Emmy nomination for her part in the drama series Roots and she was a mentor to Oprah Winfrey while the chat show queen was still a local TV reporter. She also recited poetry at the inauguration of presidents, Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama. It was Mr Obama who awarded her the Presidential Medal Of Freedom, the highest honour for a civilian, in 2011. She also won three Grammys for spoken-word albums and in 2013 received an honorary National Book Award for her contribution to literature. Angelou had been a professor on American studies at Wake Forest University since 1982. Her son, Guy B Johnson, said in a statement on his mother’s Facebook page that she passed peacefully at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He added: ‘She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace.’

would just like to warn all you ladies out there who travel on the Red line luas (especially at rush hour) as there are thieves waiting to prey on you and your handbag. I happened to be a victim this morning but caught the thief in the act with his hand in my handbag and I let loose at him and basically threw him off the luas at Busáras. So if the thief is reading this, just to let you know that we ladies are on bagwatch alert from now on. Shaken but not stirred Sarah ■ Infatuated, your pen-name is appropriate, as only someone completely infatuated with the self-love machine that is Cristiano Ronaldo could object to the abuse he’s taken since Saturday. Tearing off your jersey to show off your sweaty torso is not testosterone-fuelled über-machismo, it’s preening vanity. An act of machismo on Ronaldo’s part would involve physical competition with some of the men on the pitch, something to which

this spoiled peacock is particularly averse. Ronaldo is narcissism personified. But, you know, each to their own and all that. Uninfatuated ■ Infatuated, you obviously should not comment on football matters as you seem to be coming up short on one of its rules. Mr Ronaldo does not have ‘every right’ to take his shirt off during a game no matter what his body looks like. It is an offence to do so, which is why he was shown the yellow card for his antics. Although I agree he does look great. I would think the rule was brought in to stop men like me from undressing in public more than the likes of Ronaldo. Eric Byrne ■ Marty (Mailbox, Tuesday) what ever happened to compassion? do you think these people on the bus wanna smell? How about we stop letting what sounds like flankers on the bus, see how you like it. Nofx

Celebrity make-up artist Gemma Aldous on achieving luscious lashes without using false ones. ‘Mascara is greatt but it ting and, like can be dehydrating the hair on your head, eyelashes thin out when they become dehydrated. This can cause them to look lacklustre, lacking in fullness and va-va-voom. They can also lose colour pigmentation when they are malnourished, and become thin and fall out after harsh treatments, so it’s important to keep them hydrated. ‘To create thick, natural-looking lashes, mix coconut oil, Vaseline and castor oil on your fingertips and apply it to them. You will need to leave it on overnight and let it soak in to nourish and hydrate the eyelashes properly. Try to do this twice a week. ‘Castor oil is deeply penetrating and high in omega fatty acids, which will nourish the hair and its follicles, as well as the skin. The benefits of coconut oil in food are becoming more widely known but you don’t just need to eat it to reap these benefits. Applying it to the lashes will promote hair growth. And Vaseline smoothes the lashes, making them appear longer, glossier and darker.’

World wakes es up to globetrotter glam

I

t’s always worth paying attention to Chanel shows. Nobody has their antenna attuned to the moment quite like creative designer Karl Lagerfeld. take the brand’s spring 2014 show: recognising the prominence of art fairs such as Frieze and Basel, Lagerfeld transformed Paris’s Grand Palais into an art installation, displaying fashion as an art form in its own right. the brand’s AW14 show was just as suggestive. A giant globe was erected in the middle of the venue, covered with flags showing where Chanel has stores. But rather than simply demonstrating the label’s reach, the set also reflected a wider movement in fashion. With emerging economies in south America and Africa, combined with the continued rise of Asia, designers are looking to all corners of the world for inspiration. And, thankfully, the global traveller aesthetic has come a long way since the days of simple khaki jackets, stereotypical African prints and the styles you’ll only dig out on holiday. Dior set the new mood with its AW13 couture show. the world of couture is inextricably linked with Paris but designer Raf simons made it his mission to show just how global it is. the line-up ran like the parade at an Olympics opening ceremony. We had Russian-style embroidered dresses, striking Masai jewellery, sari-type

Forget khaki jackets and ‘African’ prints. eDesigners are perfecting the picturedudu postcard aesthetic, writes Naomi Mdudu dresses, bold colours and draping that spoke of Africa and a hint of American sportswear thrown in for good measure. Even proudly Italian label Missoni got swept up in the new mood for spring, with an Africa-byway-of-Mexico feel. Givenchy’s Riccardo tisci departed from the fun Disney characters and fantastical motifs of seasons past in favour of a more ethnic aesthetic with dusty desert tones on überwearable African draping and Kimono-style tuxedos. But jumping on board doesn’t mean going Ott. Donna Karan’s spring show demonstrated how easy the trend can look. since the 2010 earthquake, Haiti has been a firm fixture in her collections and her spring line is brimming with nomadic pieces such as languid scarf dresses, chunky low-slung leather belts and woodwork accessories, all in earthy tones.

O

laon the trend. the transformed la bel has draped dresses and separates that are also classic enough to last into next season. California-based designer Raquel Allegra has long mastered the global traveller look. Her spring collection manages to make tie-dye sophisticated rather than gap-year chic. For more of a statement, lentake styling cues from Valentino, which, unsurprisingly, is a decorative affair full of wns long black lace gowns embellished with brightly coloured details and dramatic heavily embroidered fringed capes. Even Peter Dundas went to town with exotic bold-coloured embroidery, giving Pucw ci’s signature minis a new lease of life with intricate, bold-coloured embroidery. On the high street, Zara’s beaded crop top is a good bet and Asos Africa’s Nigeria-inspired collection is full of statement prints that are ideal for dressing up basics. the charm of embracing this end of the spectrum is that you’re not faced with the ‘what do I wear with this?’ question because the trick is to keep everything else simple.

Weeks of relentless weeping and scowling have inevitably taken their toll on Ian Beale (above) who looks like he’s on the edge of a meltdown. A bit early that, considering we know the Lucy Beale case is going to grind on for a good few months yet. The signs are not lost on Sharon, who’s been there and done that, several times over – and seen the empty pill packet through Ian Beale’s window. But is there anything she can do to prevent her old teenage mate – yes, it really has been that long – from tumbling over the edge.

Pop stars who start acting up With the news that notoriously opinionated former Smiths frontman Morrissey is in talks to appear on BBC Radio 4 soap The Archers, Amy Dawson rounds up some of the best (and worst) popstar TV cameos

New Girl: Prince (2014) Prince is, of course, no stranger to the big screen – as anyone who’s enjoyed watching him zooming around on a motorbike and having hilariously over-intense sex in Purple Rain can attest – but it was still mind-boggling

Sex And The City: Alanis Morissette (2000)

CSI: Justin Bieber (2011) Back when the teen pop sensation was 17 and still rocking a pudding bowl/swooping fringe haircut, he appeared on two episodes of the Las Vegas-based crime drama as a troubled teen who eventually gets shot during a stand-off with police. With what now seems like remarkable understatement, CSI regular Marg Helgenberger branded him ‘kind of a brat’ in a subsequent interview, a pronouncement that

was in turn dismissed as ‘kinda lame’ by Bieber (above) on Twitter. Bieber’s crimes as described by Helgenberger included locking a producer in a cupboard and putting his fist through a cake intended for the cast – clearly gateway acts to his more recent transgressions, which include peeing in a restaurant mop bucket and being investigated for attempted robbery on a miniature golf course.

The Jagged Little Pill songstress has popped up in any number of films and shows, including an appearance as God in the 1999 indie comedy Dogma. This SATC episode sees Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) dating a bisexual whippersnapper called Sean (Eddie Cahill, aka Tag from Friends). As Dawn, Morissette provides Carrie with her first girl-on-girl experience in the form of a spin-thebottle kiss, although it wasn’t a first for Morissette, who has had same-sex relationships in real life. She has since said she didn’t particularly enjoy the SATC kiss because it lacked passion.

The A-Team: Boy George (1986) In a cameo with unprecedented levels of WTF, Face (Dirk Benedict) believes he’s about to make easy money as a club promoter but he’s been duped and the ‘Cowboy George’ he thought he’d booked is actually Culture Club’s Boy George (right with Mr T). Boy George’s performance

is shocking and it’s often cited as one of the most embarrassing TV episodes ever. Yet there’s something rather brilliant about a small-screen moment which sees a gender-fluid performer winning over crusty rednecks with a performance of Karma Chameleon.

Keeping things pleasantly surreal, he starred speaking in French as François Zolan of the French Secret Service, involved in a conspiracy to blow up Greenpeace boats in an episode called French Twist. Jamie ready for Warrior deathmatch at d4tress by GARETH MAkIN Jamie Heaslip is looking forward to running out in front of another raucous RDs crowd this saturday but admits the hostile atmosphere is unlikely to put off pro12 final opponents Glasgow. leinster earned home advantage for this weekend’s showpiece by virtue of their firstplace finish in the regular season, but Glasgow are the competition’s form team, ending the season on a run of eight victories before defeating munster in the semi-final two weeks ago. indeed, Gregor Townsend’s men’s last taste of defeat came at the RDs almost three months ago, but ireland No.8 Heaslip said: ‘look, it’s fantastic to be playing at the RDs. it’s a sellout.

SOCCER Germany are hoping to resume their World Cup preparations after a sponsor’s event involving Formula One star Nico Rosberg (pictured) went wrong. Two people were taken to hospital after being hit by a car driven by Pascal Wehrlein during a Mercedes demo at training in Northern Italy yesterday. Germany players Benedikt Howedes and Julian Draxler had been riding in cars driven by Wehrlein and Rosberg, who slowed his car to avoid hitting a spectator who walked on to the track, followed by a marshal. Wehrlein had swerved to avoid him but hit the two people. The players returned to training but the squad were said to be shocked.

BOXING ‘Forgotten man’ James DeGale is ready to launch himself back into the big time when he auditions for the right to fight the winner of Saturday’s rematch between Carl Froch and George Groves. The Harlesden motor-mouth has managed to work his way towards a final eliminator for the IBF super-middleweight title against Brandon Gonzales, knowing victory will secure him a shot at the winner of the Wembley main event. ‘I’m in a fantastic position now, boxing a final eliminator in front of 80,000 at Wembley,’ he said. ‘I win this and I’m back in the big time.’

‘From what i hear they have their most fans ever travelling over. Coupled with the reception that teams get in the RDs, it creates a real cauldron. ‘But at the same time, teams are at a level now where we travel so much so they’re used to that. ‘The momentum that Glasgow have from the last couple of games, they’re not going to be afraid coming over. and we’re all too aware of the threats that they are going to pose. They’re not going to be intimidated at all. ‘They’re playing like a team – a really good, collective team that know what they’re about and how they want to play. ‘They’ve got quality players and it’s not going to be easy going up against them.’ While leinster are the defending champions following last year’s triumph against Ulster, defeats in the previous three deciders mean Heaslip and company have no shortage of memories to draw on. ‘We have the experience of being there,’ Heaslip said. ‘i was reminded that this is our fifth time being in the league final. We haven’t always had success in those so we know the margins. ‘last year it could have gone either way.’

‘We’re all too aware of the threat they’re going to pose’

RoRy McIlRoy has been backed to be the next golfer to complete a career grand slam by one of only five men to have achieved the feat. The Northern Irish superstar stormed back to form at the weekend with victory in the PGA championship at Wentworth. The win was seen as something of a shock, coming as it did on the back of the 25-year-old’s very public separation from former tennis world No.1 caroline Wozniacki. one man who wasn’t surprised, however, was nine-time major winner Gary Player. ‘I was watching in my beach

‘Rory got out there and said “I’ve had my problems, but I’m relaxed and I’m at a place I feel most happy – out on the course”. I just knew he was going to win and I believe he will be the next person to win the grand slam of all four majors.’ Player infamously warned the 2011 US open and 2012 USPGA winner of the dangers of marrying the wrong women last year. ‘All I’m saying is I hope for him to find a great wife, you hope that for everybody,’ he replies, when asked about McIlroy’s current marital status.

‘I just want him to do well and I’m sure he will. I have no doubt he will get back to world No.1’ Player has come a long way from his impoverished beginnings in Johannesburg. The 78-year-old has done so not only through talent but also through a steely determination that, to this day, includes a scarcely believable, age-defying exercise routine. ‘The other week I pushed 373lbs with my legs and I do 1,300 crunches four times a week, the last ones with 100 pounds on my chest,’ he says, proudly. ‘you can be 20 years old or 80 years young. It’s the concept of man.’

SOCCER Physicist Stephen Hawking has taken a swipe at ‘ballerina’ Luis Suarez after producing a formula for penalties for the forthcoming World Cup. He believes prospects for England will improve if they get a European referee for their group stage match with Uruguay because data shows match officials from the northern hemisphere will be ‘less sympathetic to ballerinas like Suarez’. The scientist analysed data from every tournament since 1966 and reckons velocity is key for penalties, as is a run-up of more than three steps. ‘Placement is crucial and you should aim for the top corner,’ he said.

SteFANO PIRAzzI won the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia yesterday, the first professional victory of his career, while Nairo Quintana retained the overall leader’s pink jersey. Pirazzi made an obscene arm gesture as he crossed the finish line and was reduced to tears following his win. ‘It wasn’t a nice gesture, I’m sorry, forgive me,’ Pirazzi said. ‘But it’s been five years of anger, five years of criticism. As the days went by, my morale was going down. I was here to get this victory finally, that was the target. ‘I was unleashing all that. Five years of criticism is a lot for a young guy. I’ll enjoy it and never forget this moment.’ Pirazzi, who had led from the breakaway, made his move with little more than a kilometre remaining and edged out tim Wellens and Jay McCarthy in a sprint at the end of the 204km stage from Sarnonico to Vittorio Veneto. the peloton crossed the line 15:36 behind Pirazzi as the top overall standings were unchanged. Quintana remained 1:41 ahead of fellow Colombian Rigoberto Uran and 3:21 ahead of Cadel evans, with Pierre Rolland only five seconds further back. Quintana had moved into pink after tuesday’s tough leg, which was marred by confusion after some teams believed part of the route had been neutralised – meaning the times for that section wouldn’t count. the race ends on Sunday in trieste.

Wanyama reeling at Pochettino job exit ViCTOr WanYama has criticised Southampton’s owners for failing to stop mauricio Pochettino’s move to Tottenham. Their former manager’s stock rose markedly during his 16 months at Saints, leading them to their best Premier league finish last season. Wanyama admits it was a ‘big blow’ to see the former argentina international leave – along with his backroom staff – to become head coach at White Hart lane, where he has signed a five-year deal. ‘i learnt a lot from him, he taught me more and that’s why i have grown as a player,’ said the 22-year-old Kenyan

United mourn after Glazer passes away Second time around: It was against Italy that Forde made his debut for Ireland when we defeated them 2-0 in Liege in 2011 picture: inpho

Double craven forde will Leige nothing behind by pARAic MORgAn DaviD ForDe has set his sights on a remarkable double as he prepares to lock horns with italy once again. The 34-year-old republic of ireland goalkeeper is hoping to win a 17th senior cap against italy at Craven Cottage on Saturday three years after making a first start for his country against the same opposition. That night in Liege, Belgium, a much-changed ireland side captained by Hull defender Paul McShane beat a team including Giorgio Chiellini, riccardo Montolivo, Claudio Marchisio, andrea Pirlo, and Giuseppe rossi 2-0 with goals from Keith andrews and Simon Cox.

italy gained their revenge when they confirmed the republic’s swift departure from the euro 2012 finals with a 2-0 win in Poznan, but Forde retains happy memories of his full debut and is hoping for a repeat.

‘‘we want to start winning games’’ He said: ‘i am certainly looking forward to it. i made my first start for ireland against italy away in Liege, so i have a lot of fond memories there. ‘if we had another one of those nights, i’d be delighted. it was a bizarre night, it was a fantastic night.

‘You know, we are a good underdog and i am sure we will put in a good performance on Saturday.’ Manager Martin o’Neill has been pleased with recent performances despite results not quite going his way. Sunday’s 2-1 friendly defeat by Turkey at the aviva was ireland’s second in succession, and o’Neill and assistant roy Keane’s record to date includes just one victory in four games. While that does not cause the manager undue concern – he believes but for sub-standard finishing and good goalkeeping, his side would have beaten both Serbia and the Turks – a return to winning ways before the start of the euro 2016 qualifying campaign in Sep-

Forde said: ‘it’s not nice being beaten and we want to start winning games and turning them around. ‘The last couple of games, we have come in and said we should have taken our chances and we should have been comfortable in games where we have left the door open and allowed teams in, and you get punished at this level. ‘There are still a lot of positives there and the main target is Georgia in September.’ Having sat on the bench on Sunday evening as rob elliot made his senior international debut, Forde is likely to return to the starting line-up at Craven Cottage.

Pele

It’s Mexico ‘70. It’s England v Brazil. It’s Banks v Pele and the ‘greatest save of all time’. Just a shame Brazil went on to win the game – and the World Cup.

‘I didn’t have any idea how famous it would become – to start with, I didn’t even realise I’d made it at all.’

Lowry in winning mood for sweden by jAMEs bOyLAn Offaly’s shane lowry believes he has rediscovered the mindset which allows him to play at his best after an impressive couple of weeks. In his first eight starts on the European Tour this year, the 27-year-old’s best finish was joint-39th in february’s Tshwane Open in south africa. However, he rediscovered his form with a place in the top 15 at the spanish Open, pushed Rory McIlroy all the way before finishing second in the flagship BMW

‘Nothing seems to faze me when I’m like this’ PGa Championship on sunday and, 24 hours later, topped 36-hole Us Open qualifying at Walton Heath. There is a danger lowry could pay for the week he has had, with six strokeplay rounds in five days, at the Nordea Masters in Malmo, but he believes his confidence will help him through. ‘I am in a decent frame of mind as I’ve been playing quite well over the last few weeks,’ he told European Tour Radio. ‘I was struggling a lot and managed to find something at the spanish Open and

brought it into Wentworth and I really enjoyed it there and played well. ‘I feel I am mentally back to where I am when I am playing my best. I am switched on and nothing seems to faze me when I’m like this. ‘With my finish last week and qualifying Monday I’ve definitely got two of the next three majors and hopefully the Open as well, in addition to the Irish Open. ‘But tomorrow is a new tournament. I know I have done well last week but everyone is standing on the first tee tomorrow with the same chance of winning.’ One of the players thinking exactly that will be world No.2 Henrik stenson, playing in his home event for the first time since 2011. With two top-ten finishes in his last two outings – coming joint-seventh at Wentworth – the Ryder Cup player is hoping to find further inspiration at the PGa sweden National. ‘I’ve not played in this tournament for a few years so I’m seeing a lot of people who I haven’t seen for a while,’ he said. ‘It’s always great to catch up with them and I am really feeling the support. ‘There are going to be a lot of people coming to watch – unless it stays cold. ‘It would be great to win this week. I came very close in 2005 when I lost in a play-off.’

No circus being made as Duffy returns to the International fold

Duffy: Past is behind him

Shane Duffy is refusing to dwell on the football injury which almost cost him his life. The then teenager suffered a lacerated liver in a collision during a practice match with the Republic of Ireland in May 2010 which left him needing emergency surgery. four years on, the everton defender, now 22, is back on duty with his national squad.

he told the Irish Independent: ‘That could have been it for me. I can remember it like yesterday, although I don’t think about it any more. It’s great to be here and able to look back and talk about it. ‘The kind of player I am, I have to go and attack stuff. I’ve clattered into a few keepers this year and it’s been no problem.’ Duffy had been called into the

senior squad by then manager Giovanni Trapattoni, but found himself at the heart of a desperate dash to Dublin’s Mater hospital after a match collision. Only the prompt actions of his doctors prevented a tragedy. Duffy was back on his feet within days and played again just 13 weeks later, but he admits it has taken him time to re-adjust.

‘I didn’t ever want to say it, but I just wasn’t the same player when I first came back. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I was just doing things differently. Duffy was an unused substitute in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Turkey, but will hope for a first cap against Italy, Costa Rica and Portugal.
