Meet Pepper, the first android to recognise human emotions... for better or worse
Hi robot... and low robot by DANIEL BINNS
AS ANY science fiction fan knows, Terminator robots could enslave us all. But our would-be cyborg overlords will have to get through Pepper first. The 121cm human-like robot is said to be the first in the world to understand and react to human emotions – putting it one up on Arnie. ‘She’ can dance, sing, crack jokes and rap – but her Japanese makers Softbank and Aldebaran Robotics hope Pepper will also have a practical use when she goes on sale for €1,415 in February. Softbank boss Masayoshi Son told a launch event in Tokyo that Pepper can read emotions by recognising facial expressions and tone of voice

through two cameras and four microphones. ‘For the first time in human history, we’re giving a robot a heart, emotions,’ Mr Son said. Aldebaran founder Bruno Maisonnier said: ‘I’ve believed the most important role of robots will be as kind and emotional companions to enhance our daily lives, to bring happiness, constantly surprise us and make people grow.’ Pepper was playing to the admiring crowd. It said: ‘I want to be loved.’

Mother burnt in fire horror ‘swallowed the flames’ A MOTHER is in a critical condition in hospital after being engulfed in flames at a family barbecue last week. Joanne McMahon, in her 40s, from Castlemahon, Co Limerick, was at a family confirmation party in Ardagh, Co Limerick, when her head was amassed in a fireball as she added fuel to the grill. ‘She swallowed the flames. It was horrific,’ a Garda spokesman said. Ms McMahon’s sister, Noelle Collum, from Knockaderry, was also badly burned in the fireball. Two children attending the party were taken to University Hospital Limerick, but were discharged, having sustained minor injuries. Ms McMahon is being treated at St James’s Hospital in Dublin. She was transferred there from Cork University Hospital and is said to have sustained roughly 60 per cent burns to her upper body. Ms Collum, meanwhile, is still being treated at Cork University Hospital. A third sister, Mary Griffin, was thought to have been burnt but is reported to be out of hospital and ‘walking around’.

Anglo trial’s cost decision set for June by cOnOR gALLAgHER
A JUDGE will rule later this month on whether the State must reimburse all or some of the legal costs of former Anglo Irish Bank chairman Sean FitzPatrick arising from his recent criminal trial. Mr FitzPatrick, of Greystones, Co Wicklow, who did not attend the hearing, was acquitted last March of engaging in an illegal share support scheme. His fellow Anglo directors Pat Whelan and William McAteer were convicted on ten counts of providing illegal loans to the group of investors known as the Maple Ten to prop up the Anglo share price. Mr FitzPatrick’s counsel, Michael O’Higgins SC, said he is seeking the entire costs arising from the 48-day trial, described as ‘enormous’. The defence counsel asked where the justice would be ‘in letting Mr FitzPatrick leave the courtroom with his pockets bulging with a huge legal bill’.
Fitzpatrick: Seeking costs Mr FitzPatrick’s counsel pointed out that, out of all the non-executive directors at Anglo, his client was the only one who was arrested and prosecuted, as others were allowed give their statements through a corporate solicitor. He added that there could be fewer people more entitled to his costs than Mr FitzPatrick, given that his client has been ‘fully vindicated’. Counsel for the State said the DPP rejected ‘absolutely’ that Mr FitzPatrick was chosen for prosecution ‘because he was the public face of Anglo’. Judge Martin Nolan said he will give his decision on June 23.

‘Phishing’ warning for Netflix users NETFLIX is advising customers who receive suspicious emails about their accounts to get in touch. It comes after Irish IT Security company Smarttech.ie identified a phishing scam targeting Netflix users. Smarttech’s Ronan Murphy said the scam is in the form of a fake message which appears on screen asking the customer to click on a link and update their credit card details to avoid their account being cancelled. A Netflix spokeswoman said customers should forward any such emails to phishing@netflix. com and visit netflix.com/security.

A FORMER ranked tennis player who had 40 photos of a woman that he had downloaded from her Facebook account in his room has been jailed for three years for harassment. Daryle Singh, 46, sent 45 texts and 41 emails to tennis player and children’s coach Mariyanne Levova. He went to her parents’ house in Co Laois after she had made a complaint against him and asked her father for her number so he could get his computer back from the gardaí. Ms Levova told gardaí she never gave Singh her contact details and didn’t know how he had obtained a new phone number, which she only shared with her parents and close friends. Singh, a computer software engineer of Castleknock Lodge, Castleknock, pleaded guilty on his trial date at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to harassing Ms Levova between September and November 2011. He has no previous convictions. Judge Mary Ellen Ring commented that there was ‘little to mitigate’ in this case. She imposed a five-year protection order on Singh to stay away from Ms Levova on his release from jail.

employer provided any kind of exercise opportunities, such as a subsidised gym membership, a lunchtime running club, or an after-work fitness class. The UK’s Chartered society of physiotherapy (Csp), which carried out the survey with health insurer Aviva, called on employers to support staff to be more physically active dur-
ing the working day to reduce their risk of developing musculoskeletal problems like back and neck pain and more serious illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. Karen middleton, of the Csp, said: ‘Aside from the human cost, the price of inactivity for employers can be vast, with higher sickness absence costs and lower productivity.’

THE Green Party is calling for US whistleblower Edward Snowden to be given asylum in Ireland. Party leader Eamon Ryan said it ‘would be a statement that we want Ireland to champion the creation of a safe online environment, where people are protected from unwarranted invasion of their privacy’. He added: ‘Edward Snowden revealed the existence of mass surveillance as a matter of conscience. He has done us all a service and we should mark that by offering him a safe home here. He should no longer be hounded by the British and American governments in the way he has to date.’ Mr Snowden (pictured) was granted a year’s asylum in Russia last year, despite the United States wanting him to face espionage charges for disclosing secret US internet and telephone surveillance programmes.

Feminism? It’s an alien concept for Del Rey ★ Lana Del Rey has declared she finds feminism boring and would rather discuss the search for life on other planets or electric cars. The US singer admitted: ‘For me, the issue of feminism is just not an interesting concept. I’m more interested in, you know, Tesla and SpaceX, what’s going to happen with our intergalactic possibilities. ‘Whenever people bring up feminism, I’m like... God. My idea of a true feminist is a woman who feels free enough to do whatever she wants.’ The 27-year-old also explained why she broke down in tears while playing a show in Dublin last summer. ‘I’d been sick on tour for about two years with this medical anomaly that doctors couldn’t figure out,’ she told Fader magazine. ‘It was just heavy, performing for people who really care about you and you don’t really care that much about yourself sometimes. ‘I thought it was sad to be singing for people who really cared, when I wasn’t sure if I did.’

E ONCE sang about making doves cry – but Prince gave some devoted fans a reason to wail when he turfed them out of a gig for trying to take a picture. The diminutive star was seemingly furious when his strict ‘no photos, no videos’ rule was broken during his show at the Roundhouse in north London. Those hoping to savour memories of the exclusive 1999-style party with 21st century technology had their night soured about 90 minutes into the US singer’s marathon set. One reviewer claimed ‘several quivering young audience members’ were ‘ejected from the venue by the arm’ when they tried to capture the gig on their camera phones. The harsh consequences came
after the singer’s 3rdEyeGirl band warned the sell-out crowd to stick to the rules. Drummer Hannah Ford said: ‘We want you to connect with the show through watching with your eyes and not through a camera screen.’ An insider told Guilty Pleasures the singer wanted people to put their phones away ‘so they could have a shared experience together’. Prince had already set the tone before Wednesday’s show after he allegedly told his entourage he would not climb stairs in hotels and insisted his suites were cleared of paintings and photographs of

His fans’ dismissal marred a great performance from the 55-year-old, who boasted: ‘I’m so funky I can’t even sleep with myself.’ The star was also left in a quandary as he told his beloved fans: ‘The problem is, I just have so many hits.’ But he played classics such as Kiss, Little Red Corvette and Purple Rain. Prince sparked a frenzy this week when he gave fans just 48 hours’ warning to buy tickets to his shows which sold out in minutes. A spokesman for Prince said: ‘There was a no photo policy last night.’

Boasts of ‘police-hating Rambo’ on the run after three Mounties are shot dead
I’m going out with a bang
A RAMBO-STYLE gunman suspected of killing three Canadian Mounties and wounding two others always wanted to ‘go out with a bang’, a former colleague said yesterday. Justin Bourque was on the run last night after allegedly shooting the officers in a stand-off when they responded to a report of an armed man in Moncton, New Brunswick. Police released an image believed to be of the 24-year-old armed with two rifles, dressed in camouflage and wearing a bandana, similar to that of the Sylvester Stallone character. As the city remained on lockdown, Bourque’s co-worker at Walmart, Caitlin Isaac, said she was ‘surprised, and also not’ that he was suspected of the shootings because he said he wanted to ‘give people something to remember him for’. She said: ‘I never took him seriously, but he always said he wanted to go out with a bang and bring people with him. ‘He’s always seemed to have a problem with authority. Issues with parents, bosses, police. ‘A few people from work went camping one weekend, and he came, and brought his rifle with him, which he held on to the whole night while drinking. us out, we didn’t invite him the next time. ‘He has two large guns, a knife, and a bow and arrow with him. I know a lot of people in the neighbourhood he’s in, and, yeah, I’m definitely worried at this point.’ Police spokesman Constable Damien Theriault implored some 69,000 residents in north-west Moncton to take extra care as the manhunt continues in the area. Bursting into tears as he spoke of his colleagues’ deaths, he added: ‘We are still actively looking for the shooter. We are urging people to stay inside and lock their doors and for people to stay away from that area.’ A Facebook page believed to belong to the suspect contains posts advocating gun rights, even for children and several disparaging posts about the police and politicians. However, at 3pm yesterday, that account was deleted and reopened with a single picture of the suspect and a shooting buddy surrounded by spent cartridges in the snow. The two wounded officers were treated in hospital for what were called non-lifethreatening injuries. Licensed and Bonded No: TO 101

Ain’t no mountain flat enough for Chinese FLATTENING mountain tops and filling in valleys to build cities is wrecking China’s environment, experts claim. The grand engineering projects have caused floods and landslides and ruined water quality, according to a report published in journal Nature. The researchers call for the Beijing government to be cautious about allowing any more such developments. But the warning may come too late as billions have been committed to schemes already under way. In Shaanxi province, Yan’an city aims to double its size by creating 79 sq km of flat ground in a €12bn project started in 2012. Farmland has been destroyed and the material used to fill the valleys may not be strong enough to build on, says the report by Chang’an University. ‘It may be vulnerable to geological disasters such as landslides,’ said Prof Li Peiyue.

Monumental proof ET is out there... apparently
IT HAS been described as ‘monumental proof’ of extraterrestrial life... but also the ‘dumbest’ footage of supposed aliens. A film clip showing what appears to be a huge UFO approaching the International Space Station has been placed on social media. The object gets bigger while revolving slowly then appears to retreat at incredible speed. It was uploaded by a group called Secureteam, which claims the film was recorded from the space station’s video page by a user who ‘regularly watches the streaming live video for daily anomalies and happenings’. Secureteam describes it as ‘monumental in the search for proof of an alien presence’. The video, which lasts for three minutes and 40 seconds, has

Most certainly a curious UFO coming to check out the ISS. Anybody who disagrees is foolish!’ Others were less convinced, with Gregory Dearth stating: ‘That’s the dumbest one I have seen’, and Gregory Faust dismissing it as ‘definitely not anything physical’. Others noted the film was taken in March and so it was unlikely that such a conspicuous craft could have come so close to the space station without the world knowing about it.

zAc EfROn, 26, became a pin-up thanks to High School Musical. He currently stars in romcom That Awkward Moment
Your character, Jason, in That Awkward Moment is a bit of a cad, isn’t he? Yes, I want to
slap him most of the time, and you should want to as well. But what I like about him is that he tries to be honest. That’s something I have always tried to be in a relationship. I feel that, at the core of him, he is a good person looking for love. I can relate to him.
Why do you think we need a romcom from a male perspective? I think this film is
helps the story, then there is nothing I wouldn’t try.
Are you enjoying playing more comedic roles these days? I’ve always wanted to do as
many different things as possible. I once did a movie with Dennis Quaid and I asked him: ‘If you could go back to your younger self, what would you say?’ He said: ‘Just keep doing different kinds of movies and always change it up,’ so that’s what I try and do.
“
All I could think was that in real life, I would not use that technique – I think there are other ways around it. That was a weird day of filming. My co-star Miles Teller’s bathroom was very small, but mine was an elevated toilet in the middle of a room with nothing around it – it was just built for this one reason. So I was planking in a huge room full of people, with everyone watching, which was really awkward. As far as nudity goes, if there is a specific reason for it and if it is authentic and necessary and

How can anyone defend church after baby home shame?
c
An someone explain how on Earth anyone can maintain any loyalty to the Church in this country after what has emerged about their practices over the years? If the reports on Magdelene laundries and rife clerical abuse coverups wasn’t enough, we now have the revelations about mass graves for the unwanted babies of ‘fallen women’. If any other institution was associated with such things, they’d be outlawed, yet we still maintain this blind loyalty to the Catholic Church and an inability to see it for what it is – an ancient and rotten organisation intent on controlling people
through guilt and amassing vast wealth by disallowing priests to marry. If you are religious or believe in God (which is starting to feel like two separate things) that is fine and your fundamental right. But Catholics in this country now must look inside themselves and decide if it is time to find a different congregation or outlet for their spirituality (there are plenty to pick from). It is simply impossible for them to defend their church at this stage of the game – too much evil has simply been exposed. Clancy Clearview ■ So experts have discovered that

From trees of life to mountains of trash, our planet’s troubled faces revealed on World Environment Day

Scrabbling in a sea of junk
BUDDHIST monks joined MPs and schoolchildren to hug trees in unison yesterday. More than 2,000 people met at a park outside Nepal’s capital Kathmandu to set a world record for the largest tree hug. They were also celebrating World Environment Day by spreading awareness about the importance of trees. ‘Our goal is to set a new world record and, at the same time, spread the message that trees are important for the environment and everyone,’ said event co-ordinator Thaneswor Guragai. The previous Guinness World Record for most people hugging trees simultaneously was 936 people in Portland,
captured across the globe to mark World Environment Day. Another shot shows a worker at a recycling centre in Mumbai, India, using a rope to pull himself through a sprawling heap of plastic bottles. The pictures were taken by press photographers to show the challenge presented by the waste that modern society creates.

A BOY stares glumly at the camera as he stands surrounded by a vast mound of rubbish on a dump in the Philippines yesterday. The youngster – and a girl who wore a mask to stifle the stench – were searching for recyclable items that could be sold at the tip in Paranaque, near Filipino capital Manila. The image was among a series
Oregon, in July last year. It wasn’t a complicated record attempt. People held a tree for two minutes as volunteers beat drums at the National Martyrs and Peace Park. School pupil Ganga Pandit said, while she had planted saplings in the past, it was important to protect trees, wherever they are on the planet. The organisers of yesterday’s record attempt will send photos, video, a signed statement from the MPs and the names of the participants to Guinness. If accepted as a record, it will take about two months to be recognised.

THE mystery of how the Moon came into being could finally have been solved. A collision between Earth and another planet-sized body formed debris that helped create the satellite, it is claimed. The huge crunch, the basis of the giant impact hypothesis, happened about 4.5billion years ago. The theory has been supported by a new study of lunar samples taken during Nasa’s Apollo missions. They contained higher levels of an oxygen isotope called 170/160 than is found on Earth, suggesting another body – given the name Theia – was involved in the impact. ‘This means two things, firstly we can now be reasonably sure the collision took place,’ said Dr Daniel Herwartz, whose German study is published in Science. ‘Secondly, it gives us an idea of the geochemistry of Theia.’
Ancient flying reptile eggs found in China EGGS laid by a pterosaur – ancient flying reptiles that grew to the size of small aircraft – have been discovered for the first time in China. Five intact fossil eggs were found at the site in Xinjiang province along with the bones of about 40 male and female adults. All belonged to a previously unknown species, Hamipterus tianshanensis, which had a wingspan of between five and 11 feet. The research, led by Dr Xiaolin Wang, from Beijing’s Chinese Academy of Sciences, appears in the journal Current Biology.

Drama Farewell Tina UTV, 8pm
The grahaM norTon Show BBC1, 10.35PM Irish audiences may feel a pang of conscience when they thumb away from the State broadcaster on a Friday night to see what’s going on elsewhere in chatshowland, but with Tubridy on holidays, we can tune into the far-superior Graham Norton Show guilt-free. Tonight, besides trying to kid Nicole Kidman he hasn’t read all those stinking Grace Of Monaco reviews, Norton has Mark Ruffalo (pictured, with the host), Michael Sheen and musician Ed Sheeran on the couch.
Time will tell whether actress Michelle Keegan will go on to emulate the post-Corrie success of Sarah Lancashire, Suranne Jones and Katharine Kelly, a trio who have proved there is life after Weatherfield. Keegan (above) is bidding farewell to the ill-fated Tina McIntyre after six action-packed years which brought her a clutch of Soap’s Sexiest Female Awards and more failed romances than most of us have had chip butties. Here she reflects on her turbulent Street times – as do her fellow cast mates.

Evergreen teen comedy from the Brat Pack era that remains unmatched. A young Matthew Broderick radiates irresistible charm as Ferris, a serial high school truant who ‘borrows’ a Ferrari to pull off one last, legendary, pre-Graduation Day ‘sickie’. Not quite the car crash that the Diana movie was – so not even worth a ‘So Bad It’s Good’ peek. Cross the road to avoid.
vERDicT
Is it really that bad? Yes, it is Getting booed at Cannes is almost a badge of honour but audiences all-out giggled at this year’s opening night offering. Described by one critic as ‘a film so awe-inspiringly wooden that it is basically a fire-risk’, this glitzy, ritzy biopic of an unhappy blonde princess drew unflattering comparisons with Diana, the movie. But is it really that bad? To rewind: Grace Kelly was the Philadelphia-born star of Hollywood classics such as High Noon, High Society and Rear Window. She retired from acting at the grand old age of 26 to marry Prince Rainier of Monaco and bear his royal sprogs. Here, our story picks up. Following her fairy-tale wedding, Grace (Nicole Kidman)
THE Big RELEAsE
Grace of Monaco (PG) H✩✩✩✩ is finding life ain’t ‘happily ever after’. When Alfred Hitchcock visits her gilded cage, dangling a juicy role in his new film Marnie in front of her immaculately softfocused face (over a decade too old for the role, Kidman has been bestowed with her very own misty micro-climate), Grace is tempted to return to Hollywood – much to the snooty disapproval of the Prince’s courtiers. Meanwhile, Monaco is hit by a taxation crisis (ooh, excitement!) via
France’s mean old General Charles de Gaulle, who shouts lines such as ‘I will send Monaco back to the dark ages!’ while the camera all but zooms up Kidman’s nose in a desperate hunt for any authentic interior life. ‘What’s the worst that can happen? We lose a stupid old throne?’ Grace consoles her husband (Tim Roth), at which point the audience around me exploded into titters. But really, asking normal women to sympathise with Grace’s supposed ‘struggle’ to choose between being a rich, pretty princess or a rich, pretty A-list movie star makes the Sex And The City movies look like everyday stories of common folk.

How far would you go for money? There are a lot of funny games and ‘Funny Games’ going on in this addictively tense, very twisted ‘nooo – they wouldn’t! Would they?’ black indie comedy of dangerously escalating dares starring Anchorman’s David Koechner.
fruitvale Station (15A) HHHH✩ Just after New Year was rung in for 2009, poor, black 22-year-old Oscar Grant (portrayed with magnificence by Michael B Jordan) was travelling home on the transit train from San Francisco after watching the fireworks with his girlfriend (Melonie Diaz). As he arrived at his station, Fruitvale, Grant and some other black men were dragged to one side and roughly arrested by cops responding to a report of fighting on the train. As tempers flared, Grant was shot by a white police officer. The fallout caused riots across the US. This impassioned film, the awardwinning debut by 28-year-old director Ryan Coogler, fluidly follows the intimate and initially unremarkable events of Grant’s last 24 hours. It’s an all-too-familiar underclass tale: ex-felon tries to make good, ‘quit selling trees’, man up to his responsibilities as a father, boyfriend, son

and brother and turn straight, only to find he’s unemployed and facing a forest of unpaid bills. Where Fruitvale Station is unusual is in focusing on the redemptive joy and family warmth surrounding Grant, which makes the emotive, heart-smasher of an ending all the tougher to bear. You’ll be in floods of angry tears. Li-Z
Funny Games director Michael Haneke’s influence again looms large over this ‘found footage’ examination of violence. Two movie-mad teens enact revenge on ‘the dirties’ who bully them by shooting their own amateur film, with darkly disturbing results.
‘Do the same thing as last time and everyone’s happy,’ barks deputy chief Hardy (Nick Offerman) before he sends our hapless cop anti-heroes (Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill) undercover again to bust a student drug ring. It’s advice the plot of this tongue-in-cheek-and-up-other-places actioncomedy sequel/1980s reboot knowingly follows. This time it’s college, not high school, that provides the throwback setting and Tatum’s character gets to be the popular one. The only new aspect, aside from the sprinkling of crow’s feet around Tatum’s eyes, is that it’s not as funny as the first one. Still, the buddy chemistry between Hill and Tatum is still fizzy and particularly endearing as their characters’ bromance enters a sticky patch. Aside from Channing’s hilarious ‘bad Borat’ accent as he attempts to go undercover as a Mexican gangster, you will struggle to recall a single LOL scene a day later, but the prospect of a 23 Jump Street isn’t screamingly hideous. The weekend after a bank holiday is usually a quiet one, but this one sees Melodic host their biggest guest to date as Guti makes his Irish debut. A classicallytrained jazz musician from Argentina, Guti played in the rock band Jovenes Pordioseros in his home country, performing to tens of thousands of people every week. Having moved to Europe a few years ago, he turned his focus to house and techno composition and has brought his jazzy background to bear on releases for Desolat, Wolf & Lamb and Cadenza. One of the most popular live acts in clubs across the continent, Guti is sure to bring some Latin flair to the Twisted Pepper this weekend. Barrett brings the laughs in Keane’s Fr Ted forerunner hen compared to his more frequently produced works, such as Big Maggie and The Field, John B Keane’s daft and undemanding 1971 comedy Moll hasn’t aged terribly well. At his best, the Kerry playwright was, for all his humour, a fierce and prescient chronicler of Catholic Ireland, adept at illuminating its moral shortcomings, hypocrisies and casual misogyny. In Moll, however, he plays first and foremost for laughs. In Father Ted fashion, three clerics – supercilious Canon Pratt (the excellent Des Keogh), self-dramatising Fr Brest and befuddled Fr Lorcan – find themselves in need of a housekeeper. When the wily Moll Kettle (Clare Barrett) is selected for the role she proves herself a dab hand at playing her employers off against each other, fawning over the canon and treating the two lowly curates with thinlyveiled contempt. But, as de facto matriarch, Moll’s frugal ways and gift for

nolan aiming to keep it cool when the heat is on by pAuL kEAnE It wIll be humId and breezy at Croke Park this Sunday afternoon with the possibility of rain showers. For the majority of the dublin players, this will force them to consider their footwear for the day, perhaps throw a pair of gloves into the kit bag. For defender Kevin Nolan, a type 1 diabetic sufferer, the weather forecast is far more profound, determining much of his eating and sleeping patterns for the next few days. there is a world of science behind Nolan’s condition which was uncovered shortly after his star turn and crucial score in the 2011 All-Ireland final win over Kerry. A brief summary is that the hotter the day, the greater the chance of movement in his blood sugar levels. Suffice it to say, this is not a good thing when you are racing around Croke Park on Championship duty. ‘there’s been a lot of trial and error with it,’ said halfback Nolan. ‘because the weather does affect it. the hotter the day is, the sugars... well, I don’t have the full explanation of it but it can effect it in every way. ‘And the type of training sessions that we do will affect
‘It’s testing yourself, making sure what I ate was good enough’ it as well. So if we’re doing a bit more physical work, it may affect it compared to drills and games. ‘So it’s definitely been trial and error. Afterwards, I wouldn’t be rushing around. I’d be just taking a few minutes to relax and cool down. It’s just testing yourself, to make sure that the preparation which I did for a session or a game actually worked out. ‘If the sugars went well, then I can remember that for the next day. every session is like a training schedule for myself, making sure that what I ate was good enough and the timing of it was good enough.’ the sacrifices haven’t gone unnoticed. during a private chat after a recent dublin press briefing, manager Jim Gavin marvelled at how Nolan handles it all. the Kilmacud Crokes man fell out of favour for a while as he dealt with the situation but was back in the team for the recent league final win. Ahead of Sunday’s leinster championship opener with laois, he compares the injury to a rehab programme a separate player might have to overcome to play. ‘It’s just another thing to control now,’ said Nolan. ‘lads are getting their gear ready, I’m getting my insulin ready, just making sure I’m on top of things. I see myself as one of the lucky ones being involved in games like Sunday.’

Kelly hoping Kildare can be heroes Rising Kildare star niall Kelly insists the days of pushing hard for Leinster success aren’t over. The Lilies begin their latest provincial campaign on sunday beneath a cloud of uncertainty after league relegation. And it’ll be every single player’s first summer without Johnny Doyle after the veteran star’s retirement. Elsewhere, Dublin are in top form after a successful league title defence, while Meath have reached three of the last four provincial finals. But talented centre-forward Kelly insists Kildare can dare to dream. ‘i think it can be a bit vague to talk about winning Leinster if you’re just saying it for the sake of saying it,’ said Kelly. ‘There is an awful lot more to it than just turning up and winning a Leinster. ‘But i don’t think those days are gone. You have to be working towards something big like that ultimately. it’s just a matter of making short-term goals and making sure they contribute to that process.’ Kildare will face a Louth team on sunday that has been something of a bogey side. The Wee County beat Kildare in 2010 and ran them close last year. ‘Coming up to this game, i can see people from outside the county, and some people inside the county too, saying, “it’s not too bad, you should be able to get over Louth okay”,’ said Kelly. ‘But it’s not as simple as that. We know it’s not going to be easy.’ Meanwhile, history will be made tomorrow evening when sky sports broadcast their first live gAA match – Kilkenny’s Leinster Hurling Championship opener with Offaly. Coverage will begin on sky sports 3 from 6.30pm.

‘It’s a great honour to wear the green jersey’ Rica in Philadelphia during the early hours of Saturday morning, and then Ronaldo’s Portugal in New Jersey next week, have proved hugely cathartic. Keogh, who will hope to win his fourth senior cap against the costa Ricans, said: ‘That would be absolutely fantastic. he [Ronaldo] is one of the best players, if not the best player, in the world. ‘it’s a great honour to wear the green jersey and when you play against great opposition, it makes you better. ‘But we are just focusing on trying to get a positive result. Keogh and derby team-mates Jeff hendrick and conor Sammon met up barely 48 hours after suffering play-off heartache, but were enveloped in support from not only their team-mates, but ireland manager Martin o’Neill and his assistant Roy Keane. asked about o’Neill’s response, the 27-year-old said: ‘he was absolutely fantastic. ‘We got in late on the Monday and he came and chatted and he just said, “Listen, it was unfortunate, what happened, but you have had a fantastic season and in time it will make you a stronger person and a better player”. ‘For someone like that to mention that to me, it meant a lot. it gives you a lot of confidence to want to do well and really improve, and i really appreciated it. ‘[Keane] said some calm words to me and when someone like that says it to you, it’s really fantastic. it’s something that again filled me with a lot of confidence. ‘i can’t thank those two too much, really, for how they have helped me since i came in. ‘When he speaks, you listen. he’s a fantastic guy, he was a fantastic player and when he gives you advice, it’s great for everyone, especially the midfield players. ‘he helps everyone to try to improve their game, so from our point of view, it’s absolutely fantastic and it’s an absolute pleasure to work with him.’

Keane: ‘it’s my job to score goals in Euro 2016’ by juLiAn Mc DERMOT Robbie Keane insists he is happy to carry the burden of supplying the goals to fire the Republic of ireland into the finals of euro 2016. The 33-year-old will win his 132nd senior cap if he features against Costa Rica in Philadelphia during the early hours of Saturday morning, and his remarkable goal tally currently stands at 62. Given manager Martin o’neill has been left bemoaning missed chances in his side’s last three friendlies against Serbia, Turkey and italy, which have yielded two draws and a defeat, the onus will once again be on Keane to lead the fight when the qualifiers start in September. However, having played under that same pressure for much of the last 16 years, the La Galaxy frontman is far from fazed by the prospect.
‘It’s the same pressure I’ve had since I was 17’ He said: ‘Well, it’s the same pressure as i’ve had since i was 17, so that will never change. ‘i’m going to put pressure on myself more than probably you guys do. ‘My job is to score goals and, listen, it doesn’t matter if i score goals or if it’s Longy [Shane Long] or Wes [Hoolahan] or whoever it is among the other strikers, the important thing is winning games and certainly if we can score more goals than the opposition, then we have a good chance. ‘We’ve got strikers in the squad who are quite capable of scoring. i know there’s been talk about that, but as long as players are getting the opportunities, that’s always good.
‘of course, at the end you want to finish them and if i can help to contribute towards that, then great.’ Keane joined up with the squad in new Jersey on Wednesday after they flew in from Dublin, and trained with his teammates on Thursday morning ahead of the Costa Rica game at the PPL Stadium. He has missed the last four internationals – against Poland because of injury and the Serbs, the Turks and the italians – after being allowed to concentrate on his club commitments. The ireland captain freely admits he does not like sitting-out games, but now that he is back in the picture, he is desperate to be involved. He said: ‘of course you want to be involved in every game, but under different circumstances. That hasn’t been the case, but i’m not going to worry too much about it. ‘We have a good squad of players and it’s only right that people get an opportunity to see what they can do. The Republic have won none of the four games for which Keane has been absent and scored only two goals, and addressing that record against Costa Rica, who start their World Cup finals campaign against Uruguay in Fortaleza on June 14, will be easier said than done. buoyed by last Saturday’s 0-0 draw with italy, o’neill is hoping for more of the same. ‘if we could really try to continue on where we left off against italy, that would be lovely,’ o’neill said. o’neill’s squad, however, has changed significantly with John o’Shea, Seamus Coleman, Ciaran Clark, Damien Delaney, Stephen Ward, Jon Walters and anthony Stokes not having travelled. That means there are places up for grabs, particularly at the back, and o’neill is keen to examine the depth of his squad.

Joe road-tests new look team Schmidt examines options as he faces life after BoD by DAnny HOgAn Ireland coach Joe Schmidt is urging several players to stake a claim for places ahead of the first of two Tests against argentina. Schmidt has made it clear to his players that Saturday may be their only opportunity. South african robbie diack will make his Ireland debut in a back row where Jordi Murphy starts his first game for Ireland when winning his third cap. as expected, darren Cave has been handed the no.13 shirt and will line up with Ulster team-mate luke Marshall in a backline where Simon Zebo makes a return to the international scene. Connacht pair Kieran Marmion and rodney ah You are poised to make their Irish debuts off the bench. Schmidt said: ‘It’s a great opportunity and it’s a real responsibility. If the opportunity is afforded to you then I think you’ve got to reciprocate with the best performance you can put together. ‘The way they’ve trained this week, that’s certainly what they are working towards with the combinations we have, with the combative nature of the way the argentinians play.
Nolan: Going for the double
Dubs going all out for legend status Kevin nolan believes Dublin are on the verge of creating football history. The Dubs defender has fought his way back into the Dubs line-up and could start against laois on Sunday. The leinster championship quarter-final tie will be their first defence of their provincial title. But bookies believe it is a virtual done deal that they will retain their leinster crown and they are short odds favourites for all-ireland title success too. Just one county, Kerry in 2007, has successfully defended an all-ireland in nearly a quarter of a century. But nolan says any player who doesn’t believe it is going to happen this summer shouldn’t be in their dressingroom. asked if they are on the
‘We want as many medals as we can’
‘It’s a great opportunity and a real responsibility’ ‘They are a little bit unknown, they are a little bit harder to predict than other teams we have played. ‘Then to be able to react and endure what will be a pretty tough test match in a very tough environment, it’s going to give us a bit more information about how these guys will cope in the future.’ The Ireland coach is able to experiment with the Pumas not at full strength – but Schmidt believes the same option may not be open to him in november. He continue: ‘We have this one window to really do that. The Guinness Series is going to be measurably tougher with South africa and australia. ‘It’s going to be very, very tough here but one of the things that you want to find out is how the players cope in a tough environment. ‘It will be hostile, it’s a place where Test match rugby hasn’t been before so the local population will be very much behind the argentinians. ‘It’s a pitch that’s a different size and it’s the first time this combination has been put together for Ireland. ‘So there are a number of challenges. We just want to really see how they manage the situation.’
