It’s a heatwave*

*say weathermen, but you know what they’re like… OUR football team may not be in sunny Brazil, but we can still draw some consolation from predictions of glorious sunshine at home next week. Weather forecasters say temperatures are set to rise from today and build up to a period of warm and settled weather that could become ‘exceptionally hot’ at times next week. James Madden, meteorologist with Exacta Weather, said: ‘Next week is likely to see high pressure becoming firmly lodged across the country from parts of the far north to parts of the far south. ‘This will result in an extensive period of exceptionally warm and even hotter weather, making temperatures in Ireland hotter than those of our European counterparts, like Spain, Portugal and France, within this period. ‘Temperatures are likely to skyrocket and become more widespread than what we will experience over the next few days and into this weekend. ‘Many parts of the country can expect to see prolonged periods of glori-

by nIck bramhIll ous sunshine and maximum temperatures ranging in the mid- to high-20s. ‘It is also plausible that temperatures could exceed 30C in a number of places within this period.’ However, Mr Madden, whose team correctly predicted last year’s recordbreaking summer, said people should make the most of the fine spell while it lasts, as he expected temperatures to drop again in the latter part of the month, leading to more ‘unsettled and changeable conditions’. Overall, if Exacta Weather’s longrange forecast turns out to be accurate, we’re in for a near-average summer in terms of temperatures and rainfall, with the possibility of some parts of the north and west wetter and colder than average for the season. However, Mr Madden said a great week lies ahead for the whole of Ireland next week.

Thimble hogs the spotlight with her keyboard skills... but she doesn’t do requests

Pig that loined to play piano

TONE-DEAF Muppet Miss Piggy has to plead for the limelight by begging Kermit: ‘When do I sing?’ But piano-playing porker Thimble has found her recitals are always in hot demand. The musical micropig has won thousands of fans online after owner Kelly Blackwell taught her to tinkle the ivories. ‘I bought her a small child’s keyboard to practise on and she loved it, so I then bought her a child’s electric piano,’ said the professional dog trainer. ‘When I first taught her, she was so good at it I thought I’d get her a

She doesn’t play any songs in particular, we like to think she writes her own music – her own form of techno-pop.’ Six-year-old Thimble subscribes to the flamboyant Elton John school of piano performance. ‘She likes to wear clothes when she’s playing,’ said Ms Blackwell, of the appropriately named New Sonata, in Florida. ‘She has a whole load of different dresses, hats and sunglasses – she has more clothes than I do.’

Rowling gets trolled over her Potter gold jk ROWLING was hit by a torrent of abuse yesterday after donating £1million to Scotland’s anti-independence campaign. The Harry Potter author was told she was a ‘traitor’, a ‘Union cow bag’ and ‘a whore’ after saying that a yes vote in September’s referendum carried ‘serious risks’. Among the many foul-mouthed messages posted online was a tweet by The Dignity

Project: ‘What a #bitch after we gave her shelter in our city when she was a single mum’. Downing Street stepped into the row, saying: ‘There is never any place for abusive behaviour in whatever sphere of life.’ Rowling, who has a Scottish grandfather, voiced her concerns over independence on her website, saying it would take microsurgery to unravel three centuries of union.

The 48-year-old, who has donated millions to the fight against multiple sclerosis, has expressed concern about funding for medical research in Scotland. The Yes Scotland campaign distanced itself from the Twitter trolls, saying: ‘We, of course, completely respect jk Rowling and her right to express her opinion.’ The Dignity Project insisted its Twitter account was hacked.

Kenny denies sacking Enda Kenny has flatly rejected claims by one of his own Government ministers that he fired the former Garda Commissioner. Aer Lingus strike off as talks make ‘progress’ CABIN crew at Aer Lingus have called off strikes planned for next Monday and Wednesday. A statement from the Impact trade union said it had made the decision ‘following progress during a Labour Court engagement today’. Branch chair Angela McNeela said the action would be deferred ‘to allow consideration of an interim recommendation’. This will be issued by the Labour Court tomorrow morning. Impact issued strike notice for June 16 and 18 on Friday, after it said talks had broken down on cabin crew rosters. The Labour Court intervened this week to resolve the dispute, which has already resulted in a 24-hour action on May 30, the Friday of the June bank holiday weekend, which is believed to have cost Aer Lingus around €10million.

that he sacked Mr Callinan without the backing of coalition partners Labour, Mr Kenny dismissed the allegation. ‘I do not accept Minister White’s assertion,’ he said. Mr White, who is fighting for the Labour leadership, wrote to the party’s rank and file that he would not accept being kept in the dark about such manoeuvres while in government together.

‘Questions remain over bugging’ The Garda Ombudsman has said questions remain unanswered over fears that his offices were bugged. Simon O’Brien said one issue in its telecoms system remains outstanding and unexplained. ‘So, question marks still remain.’ The report by Judge John Cooke concluded that evidence does not support fears of a surveillance operation on the watchdog or that it was carried out by Garda members. Meanwhile, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said she believed Gsoc acted in good faith when faced with what it saw as a credible threat to its security. elsewhere, the Garda Representative Association said the report has cleared the force of any suspicion of bugging its watchdog’s headquarters. Former Justice Minister Alan Shatter said he welcomed Judge Cooke’s conclusions.

HyGIEnE standards at Wexford General Hospital are among the worst in the country, a report has found. Just 52 per cent of nurses and healthcare assistants were trained in cleaning their hands to prevent the spread of infections, the health watchdog has found. The Health Information and Quality authority (Hiqa) also found there was no hand hygiene training at all at the hospital recently because of a lack of resources. ‘The performance of Wexford General Hospital in national hand hygiene audits is considerably lower than the targets set by the Health Service Executive (HSE) each year, and also considerably lower than the overall compliance across all hospitals who participate in the audits,’ Hiqa reported. The HSE national benchmark for compliance with hand hygiene standards in hospitals is 90 per cent. Last year, Wexford General scored less than 72 per cent. Hiqa said hospital chiefs ‘worryingly’ did not report results of hygiene tests as part of a national audit last October. during ward inspections in the hospital, St Joseph’s Ward was found to be ‘generally unclean’. a follow-up inspection this year showed some improvement, however further improvements were needed in the general cleanliness of the ward, which was sub-standard, the watchdog found. Inspections were carried out in February last year, with follow-ups in March and april this year. In March, inspectors said they found specific issues that posed ‘high risk’ to patients’ health and welfare. dr Colm Quigley, clinical director at the hospital, said staff were determined to improve conditions.

Apple case will pass tax test, Government insists

‘Making a mess’: Leroy Harris

Love/Hate star is risking his career – judge

by ED cARTy

The Government has said it will pass any test on tax laws after european chiefs launched investigations into tax breaks allowing Apple to save hundreds of millions of euro. The Department of Finance has denied that the tech giant got a special deal before setting up here. The Apple case is one of three being examined by the european Commission that also includes Starbucks in the Netherlands and Fiat Finance and Trade in Luxembourg. The Commission said it has concerns finance officials underestimated taxable profit on products like iPhones and iPads, creating an unfair advantage and lower tax bills. however, a spokesman for the Department of Finance said it is ‘confident that there is no state aid rule breach in this case and we will defend all aspects vigorously’. Apple is one of the biggest employers in Ireland, with about 4,000 people working at its base in Cork in customer service and support. A spokesman for Apple said the company pays all the tax it owes.

Tax haven claims: Senator John McCain ‘We have received no selective treatment from Irish officials,’ he said. ‘Apple is subject to the same tax laws as scores of other international companies doing business in Ireland.’ The european inquiry focuses on advice given by the Irish state to Apple and on possible breaches of state aid between 2004 and 2014. Last year at a US Senate sub-committee hearing senators John McCain and Carl Levin claimed Ireland was a tax haven after it emerged Apple paid taxes of two per cent on its foreign earnings in 2012. Ireland’s 12.5 per cent corporation tax rate is not being examined.

‘Creative accounting’: European test will look at whether Irish finance officials underestimated profit on products like Apple iPhones and iPads, creating an unfair advantage and lower tax bills Picture: PA

Love/Hate actor Leroy Harris ‘made a mess’ of his chance at avoiding a criminal record and a possible sentence for supplying cannabis, a court heard yesterday. the 20-year-old, who suffered injuries in a gun attack last month, had been ordered to take part in a restorative justice programme. But yesterday Judge Michael Walsh was given a negative report on the actor, who featured in the cat-killing scene in the RtÉ series. the judge said Harris has only himself to blame for ‘jeopardising’ his career and he adjourned the case for another report on the suitability of Harris to carry out 150 hours of community service. the actor, of Mariner’s Port, Dublin 1, who recently returned to school to complete the Leaving Certificate, admitted possession of €100 of cannabis last october.

Islamic militants push on in a battle for Iraq

500,000 flee fighting as another city is seized

SYRIA

IRAQ Tikrit Baghdad

Seized by ISIS forces

by JOEL TAyLOR AL QAEDA-inspired militants seized another city in Iraq as soldiers and security forces fled yesterday. The group, known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), took control of Saddam Hussein’s hometown Tikrit, which is 130km north of Baghdad. It came a day after they seized Mosul, which sent an estimated 500,000 people fleeing from the city and surrounding areas, according to the International Organization for Migration. Prime minister Nouri al-Maliki said the huge security failure in Ninevah province was the result of a conspiracy. The reported 30,000 members of the security forces who fled rather than stand up to an estimated 800 militants should be punished, he added. ‘The important thing is that we are working to solve the situation,’ he said. ‘We are making preparations and we are regrouping the armed forces that are in charge of clearing Ninevah from those terrorists.’ The assault by the group saw banner-waving insurgents raid government buildings, push out security forces and capture military vehicles as residents fled for their lives. ISIS, which has been active across the border in Syria, also seized 80 Turkish citizens and consulate staff – including the head of the Turkish mission in Mosul. Iraqi foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari said the fall of the major northern city to insurgents must push the country’s leaders to work together and deal with the ‘serious, mortal threat’ facing Iraq. There was also reports last night that security forces had clashed with militants in the city of Samarra.

Human cost: A man carries his child as refugees fleeing Mosul head to the autonomous northern Kurdish region in Irbil, Iraq However, UK foreign secretary William Hague said there was ‘no question’ of British troops being sent back to Iraq to help tackle the crisis. ‘We left Iraq in the hands of elected Iraqi leaders with armed forces, with their own security forces, so it is primarily for them to deal with,’ Mr Hague told ITV News. ‘It’s very important that Iraqis take the leadership and responsibility of dealing with this, working with neighbouring countries.’ Meanwhile, a suicide bomber killed 24 people and wounded 41 others when he set off his explosive belt inside a tent where tribesmen were meeting to solve a tribal dispute in Baghdad’s Shia Sadr City neighbourhood. A car bomb struck Shia pilgrims heading to the holy city of Karbala, killing four people and wounding ten, and another killed three people and wounded 12 in a town just south Attacks: A guard searches a man at a Baghdad checkpoint Pictures: AP/reuters of Baghdad.

Uber unhappy: Black cab and licensed taxi drivers protest at Trafalgar Square, London

Cities blocked by strike over taxi apps and web bookings Cabbies and train workers walked off the job yesterday, leaving traffic stuck in some of europe’s biggest cities. The protest was over changes to the travel industry that transport workers say could endanger passengers and give untested upstarts an unfair advantage. Travellers in France faced the brunt of the strike, with the Paris commuter rails and the national train network down to one-third its usual capacity at the same time as taxis refused to take fares and blocked major highways leading into the French capital by travelling at a snail’s pace. Taxi drivers staged similar protests in London, berlin, barcelona and Madrid. The concerns reflect growing upheaval in the travel and transport industry, largely due to technologies that have made things easier for travellers, but which have caused workers to voice concerns about safety – and their jobs. One of the changes being protested about is allowing passengers to hail a

Uber has been banned in brussels, and come under scrutiny in spain, but the european Union is pushing for acceptance, saying it benefits consumers. apparently timed for the strike, Uber released an app directed at London customers, offered free rides to some customers in Paris and half off in berlin. Other changes include subway lines becoming automated and online travel booking impacting on the jobs of travel agents. a spokeswoman for ireland’s National Transport authority said ‘anybody plying for hire for reward’ here must be licensed. she said that the authority is in ongoing communication with Uber in ireland and Uber is operating with licensed drivers and cars in Dublin.

Hugh’s bald look is Panned

Heart-throb Hugh Jackman has shocked fans by shaving off his hair for his latest role. The 45-year-old got the clippers out to prepare for his role as pirate Blackbeard for the new Peter Pan adaptation, Pan. He shared his look – complete with moustache and beard – on Instagram with fans, who were not impressed. One tweeted: ‘AHHHH WHAT DID U DO TO YOUR HAIR I know it’s for a role but u should’ve put a bald cap on or something like that’. Another added: ‘Hugh Jackman is bald and i actually wantt to cry.’

G

lee actress lea Michele has found comfort in the arms of a gigolo – less than a year after her tragic lover Cory Monteith overdosed on drugs. The 27-year-old is said to have fallen for Matthew Paetz ‘over the last few months’ and he has since gone on hiatus from his escort work. Michele’s brooding new lover goes by the alias Christian and offers an array of services via a company named Cowboys4Angels. The 6ft 3in brown-haired, blueeyed 29-year-old’s online profile says he charges more than €250 for an hour of his time. Prospective clients would also be expected to pay up to €4,000 for a weekend – and more than €12,000 for a full week of fun. It is claimed the escorts offer

by SEAMUS DUFF ‘companionship’ to older women, with some of Paetz’s colleagues appearing on a reality TV show called Gigolos. But the profile for Paetz – who describes himself as a ‘dating and lifestyle coach’ on Twitter – has since been removed amid reports he has not been hired since hooking up with Michele. The fledgling couple were said to have met on the set of the music video for her second single, On My Way, and have been keen to keep their relationship hidden from the media. Michele previously dated Glee costar Cory Monteith, who died of an accidental heroin and alcohol overdose on July 13 last year.

The actor had a history of drug problems and was found dead at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel, in Vancouver, after a night of partying with friends. Michele was devastated by his death and tweeted her thoughts just last month to mark what would have been Monteith’s 32nd birthday. ‘The biggest heart and most beautiful smile.. In all of our hearts.. We love you so. Happy Birthday,’ she said on Twitter on May 11.

In the future, when all’s well, I’ll be back

Morrissey has cancelled the remainder of his US tour after he was rushed to hospital with a fever. He was treated in Boston after reportedly collapsing on Saturday. And the former Smiths frontman was quick to blame his long-term support act Kristeen Young. He accused her of passing on her germs to the 55-year-old when they performed in Miami, Florida, earlier this month. ‘Difficulties had arisen

following Kristeen Young’s opening set, after which Kristeen confessed to “a horrendous cold”, the symptoms of which were passed on to Morrissey,’ his fan site reports. But Young hit back in a Facebook post, which has since been removed, saying she was suffering from an allergy attack. ‘I am very sorry that Morrissey is not feeling well,’ she wrote. ‘But I will not tolerate these lies… particularly about my health.’

Stalked Bullock hid in own Panic Room

Game Of Thrones star Kit Harington says he’s being forced to stay hairy for the foreseeable future after revealing his luscious locks have their very own TV deal. The British screen hunk admits looking like a caveman off camera is not ideal but he is banned from the

barbers. ‘It has its own contract, definitely,’ said the 27-year-old Londoner, who plays Jon Snow in the hit HBO show. ‘I never thought I’d say that about my own hair... I’m not allowed to cut it, and I didn’t realise this until recently. I wanted to cut it – I’ve had long hair for

ages – and they were like, “No, no, no. That won’t be happening”.’ The star (above) told American talk show Live With Kelly And Michael he’d had some ‘ridiculous conversations’ with agents, managers and HBO, who have even banned him wearing a costume weave.

Sandra Bullock must have thought she was in a real-life Panic Room situation after it emerged she locked herself in a room to dodge a machine gun-owning intruder. In a scenario reminiscent of the 2002 Jodie Foster film, it emerged 49-year-old Bullock waited for hours for police to arrive after the break-in at her Los Angeles home at the weekend. Police have charged Joshua James Corbett, 39, with burglary, stalking and possession of a machine gun, although they said he did not have the gun with him at the time. According to TMZ, Corbett wasn’t intending to hurt or burgle Bullock but wanted a ‘face-to-face meeting’.

The bug-eyed fish that meant we all had Jaws HE’S a funny fellow. But if it hadn’t been for this bug-eyed creature of the deep, we’d all be looking a little peculiar. Metaspriggina walcotti, which swam the oceans 500million years ago, had arches of bone near the front of its body that are thought to have led to the evolution of jaws. In other words – for all of us blessed with a mouth that opens and closes – this is grandad. And now he can take his place in the family album for the first time, after the discovery of a treasure trove of fossils allowed experts to build up a clear picture. ‘The detail is stunning,’ said Professor Simon Conway Morris of Cambridge University. ‘Even the eyes are beautifully preserved and clearly evident.’ The fish, which was only about 6.3cm long, had previously been identified from just two incomplete specimens. But 100 more have been dug up at sites including the Burgess Shale Formation in the Canadian Rockies. They

Church raid for fugitive billionaire ‘ferry boss’ THOUSANDS of South Korean police yesterday raided a church compound in the hunt for a fugitive billionaire linked to the Sewol ferry disaster. Around 5,000 officers stormed the Evangelical Baptist Church outside Seoul searching for Yoo Byung-eun, who they believe owns the vessel that sank in April with the loss of 300 lives. Four members of the church, which critics describe as a cult, were detained for helping Yoo, police said. Another was held for alleged obstruction.

The pair nearest the head is slightly thicker and is believed – over time – to have developed into the upper and lower jaws seen in later fish, dinosaurs, the first mammals and eventually humans. Prof Conway Norris said: ‘Once the jaws develop the whole world opens. Having a hypothetical model swim into the fossil record like this is incredibly gratifying.’ Some of us like our jawline more than others but – whether you’re a chiselled Ben Affleck type or a bit on the jowly side – without Metaspriggina walcotti you’d be a completely chinless wonder. Professor Jean-Bernard Caron, of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, added: ‘Obviously jawed fish came later but this is like a starting post – everything is there and ready to go.’

Angelina: There must be no amnesty for wartime rapists THERE must be no amnesty for rapists, Angelina Jolie said yesterday, as she helped launch guidelines for recording sex attacks in war zones as a crime. The protocol for those on the frontline sets out how to recognise sexual violence as an international offence and how to protect victims and witnesses. Tomb Raider star Jolie, who

is special envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, was co-chairing the End Sexual Violence in Conflict summit in London and called it ‘an essential document’ and said rape victims in war zones had a right to justice. ‘The number of convictions for war zone sexual rape is pitifully small,’ the 39-year-old added. ‘Perpetrators have to know

that, even during conflict, evidence is collected and it will be used against them. ‘They have to know that when peace agreements are made there will be no amnesty for rape. We all know how hard it is to secure convictions for rape even in stable democratic countries, so we have to work even harder to make justice possible in fragile countries.’

Egypt leader apologises Maddie search brings no to sexual assault victim leads for ‘stupid English’ EGYPT’S newly sworn-in president has apologised in person to a woman sexually assaulted by a mob during celebrations marking his inauguration. A visibly moved Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi visited the woman in a Cairo hospital, saying: ‘I have come to tell you and every Egyptian woman that I am sorry. I am apologising to every Egyptian woman.’ The former military chief ousted the country’s first elected president nearly a year ago. Several women were assaulted during Sunday’s inaugural festivities. The attacks were a grim reminder of one of Egyptian society’s darkest sides and coincided with el-Sissi starring in carefully choreographed ceremonies in the capital.

SEARCHES of scrubland have thrown up no new evidence relating to missing Madeleine McCann, British police confirmed last night. Three barren sites have been scoured near the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz and ‘more activity has been agreed’ for the coming days. ‘This work ensures all lines of inquiry are progressed in a systematic manner and covers just the one hypothesis that she was killed and buried locally,’ a Scotland Yard spokesman said. The police’s presence in the town has not been welcomed. On a wall opposite one of the areas searched, graffiti has been scrawled which slurs the McCann family and describes British police as ‘stupid’.

World Cup mascot focus for most endangered species FULECO, the official mascot of the World Cup, which gets underway today in São Paolo with Brazil going head-to-head with Croatia, was chosen to highlight environmental concerns for endangered species. The Brazilian three-banded armadillo (pictured right) is just one of more than 22,000 species at risk of dying out, according to experts. Destruction of habitats, being hunted for food, and illegal trading are the main reasons for so many species facing such an uncertain future. About 94 per cent of lemurs in Madagascar are threatened by increasing illegal logging in the face of political uncertainty and rising poverty, and from being hunted for food. Almost four-fifths of slipper orchids, which are found in North America, Europe and temperate regions of Asia, are also at risk of dying out, the International Union for

Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of threatened species has revealed. The Japanese eel, a traditional delicacy and the country’s most expensive food fish, is endangered. Dr Chistoph Schwitzer, on the IUCN’s primate specialist group and director of Conservation at Bristol Zoological Society, said: ‘Despite profound threats to lemurs, we believe there is still hope. Past successes demonstrate collaboration between local communities, non-governmental organisations and researchers can protect imperilled primate species.’

SEPP BLATTER has left critics openmouthed by suggesting that football matches may one day be played between different planets. The Fifa president, under fire for his handling of corruption allegations, tried to win over an audience in Brazil yesterday with his inter-planetary ambitions. Addressing Fifa members ahead of the World Cup, he told them: ‘Our objective never finishes. From north to west to east and south, we shall wonder one day if our game is played on other planets – and then one day we won’t have the World Cup, we will have interplanetary contests.’ His cosmic comments caused a storm on social media. Football journalist Richard Buxton tweeted: ‘If Blatter decides to take the interplanetary gag seriously, the 2050 World Cup will be awarded to the Planet Zog under suspicious circumstances.’ BBC presenter Gary Lineker added: ‘Can he go in search of them?’ The competition, which opens today in São Paulo, has brought increasing pressure on the 78-year-old who has decided to stand for an unprecedented fifth term. Blatter sidestepped claims of corruption over Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 tournament, after dismissing them as racist earlier this week. He insisted: ‘Fifa is shaping society. We must carry that flame of honesty, responsibility and always of respect. If not, we will betray the spirit of this game we love.’ But former English FA chairman Lord Triesman, who helped lead England’s bid to host the 2018 tournament, yesterday accused Fifa of acting like a ‘mafia family’.

SOS single men: Women want you! MEN, are you free, single and ready to mingle? If so, there’s a whole tent full of women looking for your undivided attention at this year’s Taste of Dublin festival. More than 250 single men and women are to go ‘back to basics’ at MiX@ – the new dating event aims to get away from dating apps and websites and attendees mix in the real world with others at the event. Founder Nikki Dwyer said her ‘social experiment’ is about broadening people’s social circles. The organiser met boyfriend and co-founder Alan Kennedy (inset) when she test drove her mixer idea more than a year and a half ago.

‘We had 40 people attend last time – 20 men and 20 women,’ she said, with varying degrees of success. ‘We had two guys chasing after the same girl last year, with one guy, the ‘rookie’ as he called himself, admitting that he may have peaked too early – he went in for the pull too soon,’ laughed Dwyer.

The MiX@ marquee will open at the Iveagh Gardens in Dublin from 4.30pm-8.30pm on Sunday, and future other-halfs must register. The €30 tickets, which include VIP entry to the event, full access to Taste and a free welcome drink, will not be on sale at the event. See mixat.ie to book your spot. Separately, Taste of Dublin opens its doors today and we have another great value offer exclusive to Metro Herald readers. Bring Friday’s paper to the lunchtime session tomorrow and get entry for only €10 instead of €23! PLUS enjoy a free glass of Prosecco from O’Briens Wines.

by DOMINIC YEATMAN He said: ‘Don Corleone, I believe, would have recognised the tactics and probably would have admired them. Fifa acts like a mafia family with a decades-long tradition of bribes, bungs and corruption.’ One of Fifa’s biggest sponsors added its voice to the corruption row yesterday. James Quincey, president of Coca-Cola Europe, told Sky News: ‘Anything that detracts from the values of football, the values of the World Cup, the idea of fair play is of concern to us.’

Petition over mother and baby homes amid Dáil vigil TWO seven-year-old girls have handed ministers a petition signed by 30,000 people demanding a judge lead the inquiry into Church-run, State-sanctioned institutions for single mothers. Dasha Klyaritskaya-Hilliard and her friend, Juliette Bruce Merzouk, from Dublin, took the message on behalf of people in more than a dozen countries who joined an online campaign urging the Government to escalate investigations. The petition was handed in as the Government said it was considering

calls for a judge to lead the inquiry into high mortality rates at so-called mother and baby homes over several decades of the last century. The girls passed the signatures to Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald and Children’s Minister Charlie Flanagan. Later, children’s shoes, teddy bears and flowers were hung from the Dáil railings, and about 1,000 people, including some adopted from homes, joined a candlelit vigil in memory of the estimated 4,000 babies who died over several decades.

Pair held over double murder A MAN in his 20s and a man in his 30s have been arrested in connection with the murders of Eoin O’Connor and Anthony Keegan. The bodies of the two Dubliners, both in their 30s, were discovered on an island on Lough Sheelin, Co Cavan, on May 26 last. The pair had been reported missing more than a month earlier.

Gardaí arrested two men in the Cavan area yesterday as part of the investigation and both are being held at Kells Garda Station. A man in his 30s was also arrested and was being held at Dún Laoghaire Garda Station over the shooting of a doorman at the Sally Noggin pub in the early hours of Monday.

It’s not very streamlined and its longest journey is less than a billionth of a metre, but a molecular car on a road of copper atoms could one day help deliver drugs around the body. Elsewhere, microscopic smileys assembled from fragments of DNA sit alongside the ghostly shape of plankton retrieved from Antarctic ice crystals.

And to prove that humans haven’t got the microscopic world entirely to themselves, an Elysia sea slug demonstrates its ability to live entirely on the photosynthesis of algae that lives in its transparent stomach. Author Peter Forbes said: ‘We are at the beginning of an invisible revolution in an often counter-intuitive world where gravity is insignificant and Newtonian laws don’t always apply. ‘Objects and materials don’t behave as we expect, nothing is ever still and everything is electromagnetically ‘‘sticky’’.’

Civic apathy to blame for our social injustices – not Church!

B

arry, if the Church was a political party it would be voted out at the next General Election and then recoup its seats in the next. The problem is the complacency and lack of engagement in change of the general public. The ‘rich’ lobby politicians to change, delay or repeal legislation and so get richer. The majority of the public doesn’t do anything constructive about anything, and so gets poorer and lives in an increasingly unequal and unjust society. ‘Science may have found a cure for most evils, but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all – the apathy of human beings’ – Helen Keller. How many readers will write or email their TDs about the report that Oireachtas staff will not be paying back the revenue settlement of €333,412 out of their own pockets? One in 1,000 probably. David ■ Barry, the Church has been, and continues to be, responsible for plenty of good. The modern day hospital, university and charity services which we take for granted can all be traced back to Church innovations in the Middle ages. Today the Church and its members are active all over the world in

selfless charitable, medicinal and educational endeavours. They put others ahead of their own wants, careers and even security. So, there is plenty of good news about the Church too. Thomas ■ Just a question to the people who lose their phones in pubs and on public transport who say the photos are so sentimental to them (naturally) – why not use something like the Dropbox app? If I take a photo with my phone, a couple of minutes later it automatically copies to Dropbox. This means that, although losing a phone is horrible, my photos and any documents are saved. My heart stopped when I read about the poor mother who had her phone robbed that had the precious photos of her son on it – so happy to hear it was returned! I’m just curious and not being sarcastic. AW ■ I’m appealing to all cat lovers and owners to either ensure their moggies are fitted with a bell on their collars to warn chicks and their parents of the presence of a cat, or better still, keep them indoors or under supervision when outside. The song birds give us all so much pleasure during the year – we need to protect them as much as we can. Anto

Father’s Day special

Some of the best father figures are depicted in TV and film. Ahead of Father’s Day on Sunday, here’s our pick of good dads versus bad dads. By Aileen Donegan GOOD DADS

Father figures

Eric Camden – Seventh Heaven We all remember the Sunday evening sit-in with the folks as kids to watch Seventh Heaven. Just after the Six One, it portrayed one of the most morally sound TV families – and to top it off, every week Eric (aka Preacher Dad) would give us all the best how-to-be-agreat-father sermon. Lessons learned? Atticus Finch – To Kill A Mockingbird If you haven’t seen this classic human rights gem yet, you’re missing out. Finch, (below, portrayed by Gregory Peck), is a top lawyer defending a black man accused of a heinous crime. A great legal eagle and father, he teaches Scout about the case and what racism means. Top dad. Marlin – Finding Nemo This dad swam through dangerous shark-infested seas to find his son Nemo – could your dad do the same? Sam Baldwin – Sleepless In Seattle Tom Hanks plays a widower not looking to remarry, but his young son Jonah steps in to change that. Meg Ryan is in it too, which is always a treat. Chris Gardner – Pursuit Of Happyness Inspired by a true story, Will Smith (main) plays homeless-man-turnedentrepreneur Gardner who will do anything to advance his career to protect his family. Some would argue his pursuit of a career instead of ‘work’ is selfish, but it all works out in the end.

father’s day

Guido Orefice – Life Is Beautiful

Determined to shield his family from the horrors of the concentration camp, Orefice, played by Roberto Benigni, convinces his very young child that the officers are part of an extravagant and seemingly real game – to win it, the child must hide. Heartbreaking.

BAD DADS Homer Simpson – The Simpsons This one might cause some contention. He’s lovable but dimwitted. Homer’s continual child neglect and neck-wringing of Bart is what makes him a baddie. Royal Tenenbaum – The Royal Tenenbaums Wes Anderson’s cruel creation in Royal is a marvellous example of bad parenting. The lying egotist tries to regain his family’s trust by faking a terminal illness – there’s no redeeming that. Lester Burnham – American Beauty Long before House Of Cards, Kevin Spacey starred as super bad dad Burnham, whose main goal in life, it seems, is trying to bang his daughter’s friend. It’s a twisted and sad film. One not to be dismissed. Dwight Hansen – This Boy’s Life Hollywood heavyweight Robert

De Niro plays overbearing and malevolent stepdad Dwight. Saying that, most of us probably remember the film for a young Leonardo DiCaprio, pre-Titanic.

Darth Vader – Star Wars

How crap was Vader as a father? Well that’s a tough one. In an effort to protect his love, Queen Amidala, from (un)certain death, he decides to go to the Dark Side. He turns out to be nothing more than an evil, scary, papa.

Jack Torrance – The Shining

Written by Stephen King, this horror novel depicts a father entirely removed from humanity. Going crazy, John Daniel ‘Jack’ Torrance tries to kill his own child. Pure evil.

He knows his hydrangeas from his geraniums It’s only right that you take care of the old man on Sunday. Luke Holohan presents his guide to treating those dad stereotypes to a great day out

B

eDTIme stories gave way to embarrassing tales, and now he lends you nuggets of wisdom – although you’ll not always heed them. He provided life lessons; helped lug poorly assembled furniture to your top-floor apartment, walked you down the aisle and played the role of grandfather to a tee. He had the dodgy knitwear and an equally suspect taste in music – now you have them too. He bought you your first pint (and didn’t tell your mother). And now it’s payback time.

Sports mad dad Triumphant victories on the sports field are never far away with the sports-mad father. He had trials for Nottingham Forest, you know? He could have been a contender – before his knees gave way from carrying you on his shoulders as a child. Treat sporty dad to a pint in the pub while watching the match – it doesn’t mat-ter which one – he likes them all. Trendy dad He is ‘down with kids’ on all topics from music to the latest ‘hip trends’. Bring him to a tattoo parlour to dis-suade him from the mid-life crisis literary inking. To satisfy his need to rediscover youth, join him and other Boogie Funk aficionados for Dam Funk at The Sugar Club. Rooted in early-’80s Boogie, Soul and electro-Funk, you can both get a dose of ‘Funkmosphere’ at this ob-scure music night. www.thesugarclub.com. Adventurous dad He’s the lesser spotted Indiana Jones dad and fervent enthusiast of the outdoors. Rather than lazing in front of the television, the adventurous enturous dad would rather throw on the hik-ing boots and head into the wild in pursuit of nature’s thrills. Prepare a packed lunch, discover trails in the mountains, traverse gorges or go whitewater rafting on the Riverr Liffey. www.rafting.ie. Chilled dad more laidback than the Dalai Lama, the chilled-out pop wants nothing more than to continue in his state of permanent relaxation. Indulge him with a slap-up breakfast at the local greasy spoon. Then pay a visit to the Grooming Rooms for a read of the broadsheets and a hot towel shave. www.thegroomingrooms.ie First-time father dad This one is for the new mothers as well. Drop the little

one off at the in-laws/babysitters and bask in a rare moment of uninterrupted silence. enjoy dinner and a movie at the IFI. Better still, wander around the calming galleries of the Royal Hibernian Academy. www.rhagallery.ie.

Gr Green fingers dad

Not unlike Alan Titchmarsh, the gardener dad knows his hydrangeas from his geraniums. Take him to the Dublin Garden Festival this weekend for expert floral and urban growing advice. There’ also live jazz. There’s www www.dublingardenfestival.ie. Illustr Illustrations by Chloë Keogan.

on a month-long leave of absence Birgitte (above) is turning her focus to her family life – she’s grappling with the decision about whether or not to return to work as prime minister. Meanwhile, the Labour chairman Hans-Christian Thorsen is angling for her position. Could he be a worthy successor? Elsewhere, Kasper and Katrine hunt for apartments together, but their plans are put on hold after an argument about having children.

Alicia (Julianna Margulies) takes a much-needed day off work, which leaves time for a spot of soul-searching – does she want to be a lawyer anymore, lunch with her Mum (the legend that is Stockard Channing), and some flirting with a cute chap she spotted on a jury. Isn’t there a law against that sort of thing?

After a Sugar Loaf mountain of hype, the World Cup finally kicks off. We’re in São Paulo, not Rio, for the opener between Brazil and Croatia and Neymar (above) and his mates will have the hopes of a nation hanging on every swing of a boot. The game starts at 9pm and before that there’s the opening ceremony to shake your booty to – those Brazilians do love a samba. Bill O’Herlihy is joined by Eamon Dunphy, John Giles and Liam Brady, with commentary from George Hamilton and Ray Houghton.

Slushy, clean-cut US remake of the 1981 love story, now only memorable for the Diana Ross/ Lionel Richie theme tune. Alex Pettyfer is the boy from the wrong side of town, Gabriella Wilde (right with Pettyfer) is the rich girl who can’t resist him – much to the vexation of her protective doctor Dad (Bruce Greenwood) who is heavily traumatised by the loss of her brother.

Asghar Farhadi, Oscar-winning writer/director of A Separation, constructs another exquisitely humane and complex portrait of the messiness of modern metropolitan family life. Marie (Bérénice Bejo from The Artist) and Samir (Tahar Rahim, left with Bejo) are due to be married – however, her husband has yet to sign the divorce papers and his wife is in a coma.

Having wrenched dark laughs out of geriatric care in Getting on, here Jo Brand tackles the sensitive subject of childcare services with delicious insensitivity. Brand (above) is Rose, a case officer who’s a single mum in a state of chaos, Alan Davies is Al, the only vaguely sane one in the office, and there’s a cracking supporting cast. The humour takes a shouldershrugging pop at a world held together by safety pins and initials – have fun working out what an RLF is. Let’s hope there’s a series.

The cut-throat world that is US television has seen the plug pulled on this hi-tech action adventure after just one series. Expect to look away horrified during this hard-hitting documentary. The title has echoes of greyhound racing, but this is a very different canine business: the bloody world of dog-fighting. This ‘sport’ has been illegal since 1835, but there’s been a recent revival in Britain’s inner cities, with certain breeds trained as prize fighters. Filmmaker Penny Woolcock takes us inside this hidden world.

Cult classic starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, which features multiple police car chases, a superb soundtrack and cameos by blues legends like James Brown and Aretha Franklin. It begins with Jake Blues getting out of the nick and, along with his brother Elwood, reuniting their old band to raise money to save the orphanage they grew up in from the taxman. You’ll laugh, you’ll sing and by the end, if not before, you’ll be definitely bopping along.

The so-called ‘golden age of porn’ is celebrated in this breakthrough film for director Paul Thomas Anderson and star Mark Wahlberg (above with co-star Julianne Moore). It’s a ragsto-riches tale of a young potwasher (Wahlberg) whose ‘talent’ is spotted by a porn producer (Burt Reynolds), who sucks his protégé, renamed Dirk Diggler, into an X-rated world of sex and drugs. As the latter take hold, Dirk’s tawdry star fades and his porn family abandon him. Darkly comic, superbly cast and memorably assured.

Marmion, who was an unused replacement in last year’s summer tour to Canada and the United States, said it was a dream come true to make his international bow. ‘It’s great to get the opportunity and all the hard work to pay off,’ he said. ‘I was delighted to get out on the pitch. Obviously after last year not getting on, I was just happy to get out there to get a run-out.’ He started 26 of Connacht’s competitive games this season and came off the bench in the other two – it was the second straight season in which he has played in every league game. He said: ‘It was obviously a step up, even in training and stuff, it’s all a step up so it’s a great experience and something to take on board for when we go back and play with our regions. ‘We are going to try and get the win again on Saturday. There is a good mix of youth and experience and, at 26, he’s in the middle. Lallana is wanted by the big clubs but I expect a great World Cup from him if he plays.

I have seen a few England games this year and Lallana is one of the brightest in a very good group.

ronaldo shows brilliance as he returns from injury

Portugal boss Paulo Bento was a happy man after seeing Cristiano ronaldo return from injury ahead of the World Cup finals. the real Madrid forward played 66 minutes of his country’s 5-1 friendly victory over the republic of Ireland at the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey. ronaldo, who had missed the previous two warm-up games with tendonitis in his left knee and a thigh problem, did not find his way on to the scoresheet, but showed flashes of his brilliance, setting up one of striker Hugo almeida’s two goals and rattling the foot of the post with a first-half free-kick.

Bento said: ‘Yes, it was important that he played and we would not hide it. a player like ronaldo is important for any team, and that’s the case for us. It’s good that he is back.’ ronaldo’s contribution will put him in line for Portugal’s opener against germany in Salvador on June 16, when Bento will hope he has regained a little more of his customary sharpness. However, he was content enough with what he saw against the republic. He said: ‘I think he had a good match alongside what we did collectively.

Who’s in charge?

Former Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari (left) is already a hero after leading Brazil to their 2002 win – the 65-year-old will be an icon if he repeats the trick on home soil.

Niko Kovac (right) took charge last year and is only 42. Won 83 Croatia caps until 2008.

There’s a case to be made for Roy Hodgson’s side to be flying home after the group stages, at 6/4 with Stan James. But if they avoid defeat against Italy, they can squeeze into round two. World Cup wait is over as Brazil versus Croatia kicks off

by pARAic MORgAn There will be a universal sigh of relief when Brazil’s captain Thiago Silva leads his team out at the Arena Corinthians in São Paulo today to finally get the World Cup underway. The agonising wait can be put to one side if those in the green and gold shirts of Brazil satisfy the demands of the nation in their opening game against Croatia. This should be the spiritual home of football: a country which has won the World Cup no fewer than five times, and which has not been hosts since 1950. Yet, as the Football Association chairman

Greg Dyke pointed out, anyone walking around São Paulo would have been hardpushed to realise that a World Cup was about to kick off in the city. Dyke said: ‘The only reason you’d know there’s a World Cup here is because half the people are on strike and you can’t get from the airport. ‘I’m told there’s all sorts of politics. There is real concern about the protesters. Some

people don’t want Brazil to win because they don’t want the government to get reelected.’ This is no doubt a reflection on all that has gone since the country was awarded the right to stage the event seven years ago, with organisers struggling to deal with building delays, the abandonment of transport projects, strikes, deaths of construction workers, politi-

cal rivalries and widespread protests over waste and inefficiencies associated with the event. There have been signs of some World Cup fever building in rio de Janeiro with fans from Argentina, Mexico, Italy and england mixing with Brazilians on Copacabana beach. More low-key than the multi-million dollar Olympics, for the World Cup opening ceremony the focus will be on Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull and Brazilian pop star Claudia Leitte performing the official World Cup song ‘We Are One (Olé Ola)’.
