Ole, Ole, Ola as JLo and Pitbull kick off soccer’s biggest show by SHAROn MARRiS JENNIFER Lopez was the star of the spectacular show that kicked off the World Cup last night. The singer wore a green and gold leotard as she performed tournament anthem We Are One (Ole Ola) with rapper Pitbull and Brazilian popstar Claudia Leitte. They gave an energetic performance, swaying their arms and encouraging the screaming crowd to join in – putting an end to rumours that JLo, 44, had pulled out. The ceremony began with 660 dancers paying tribute to host nation Brazil’s natural beauty and samba beat by dressing as trees, flowers and musical instruments. A‘living football’ of performers – looking like they might be extras in the new Star Wars movie – then parted to reveal the big names. Three doves were released by children and a paraplegic in a robot suit delivered the first ceremonial kick of the competition. The carnival atmosphere was in stark contrast to scenes of protest over World Cup spending earlier in the day. But the stormy atmosphere melted away inside the 65,000seat Arena de São Paulo as the first World Cup in the footballobsessed country for 64 years got underway after months of build-up.

WORLD CUP Brazil 2014

The heady excitement leading to the opener between Brazil and Croatia – the first of 64 games over 31 days – had grown steadily as the day went on. Fans waving Brazil flags boarded trains heading to the stadium, while Croatian supporters drank beer on Avenida Paulista, the city’s best-known thoroughfare. Failure to win the tournament in their own back yard would be seen as a disaster for Phil Scolari’s Brazil side, the heirs to footballing legends such as Pele, Zico, Socrates and Ronaldo. And for Brazil’s president Dilma Rousseff, the stakes are high on and off the pitch. Many commentators say the tournament’s success may affect her chances of re-election in October. She has dismissed complaints about overspending on World Cup stadiums and construction delays and has urged Brazilians to get behind the national team.

Stranded rail passengers wilt in glorious sunshine

IRISH RAIL is investigating after a woman reportedly fainted on a train stalled for an hour with no air-conditioning. Darts and commuter trains were in chaos last night after faults at the Lansdowne and Serpentine level crossings. Passenger Tynan Hooper tweeted that he and his fellow passengers were waiting 55 minutes on a stalled northbound Drogheda train without air conditioning when a female passenger passed out. He claimed the emergency button was pushed but there was no response. He and the affected woman exited the train at Lansdowne Road and he later said she was fine after getting some air. Irish Rail told GoMetro.ie it would send emergency services as soon as it could locate the woman but that the driver had ‘received no reports’ of a woman having passed out. It said the emergency button did not register as having been pushed but may not have been working. It said there is air conditioning as standard on commuter lines but that it may also not have been working. The Serpentine fault was fixed by 6.30pm, and Lansdowne by 6.50pm but delays were still in place an hour later.

Inquiry claims of ‘skulduggery’ THE Government has been accused of ‘political skulduggery’ after it added two extra senators to the banking inquiry. The comment from Fianna Fáil senator Paschal Mooney comes after original nominee, Labour’s Susan O’Keeffe, was added, having last week missed a selection committee and following the addition of senator Michael D’Arcy of Fine Gael to the 11-member committee. Meanwhile Independent Stephen Donnelly said he was ‘rethinking’ his position on the inquiry over the Government’s move for a majority.

‘Health chiefs should resign’ THE chairman of the Dáil Public Accounts Committee has called on the heads of the HSE and the Department of Health to resign. Fianna Fáil TD John McGuinness said the HSE is a business and its secretary general Tony O’Brien and his department counterpart, Ambrose McLoughlin, had failed ‘on all of the major fronts’. Speaking to RTÉ News later, Mr O’Brien said he is not a politician and would not ‘enter into the rough and tumble of political commentary’.

An annual Holy Communion survey, carried out online for Ulster Bank, found children can collect €591 from family and friends – up €70 on last year – with only 12 per cent banking the money. For Irish parents, the average spend has gone up again this year to €764. The survey of 213 parents was carried out over three weeks among members of Empathy Research’s Ideas Panel.

trafficking gangs. Seven have been found in Ireland, the Garda Press office said. Two organised-crime outfits were investigated in the Dublin area, one of which is believed to have links to gangs in at least four other countries. Detectives uncovered evidence on

the transfer of money, believed to be the proceeds of crime, during a raid on a premises in west Dublin. The crackdown was led by international police agency Europol in widespread raids in 15 countries across Europe. In total, 31 people in Ireland have been looked into following requests from other police forces. Gerardine Rowley of Ruhama, a

group which works with women involved in the sex trade, called the arrests ‘a positive development’. ‘We have worked with quite a large number of women from West Africa over the last eight years. Some years, they were the biggest percentage of women who were the victims of human trafficking, particularly from Nigeria,’ Ms Rowley said.

Dublin Bus income is up despite fewer passengers REVENUE at Dublin Bus is on the up despite the number of people travelling on its service continuing to fall. According to Bus Statistics For Ireland, a report by the National Transport Authority (NTA), since 2010 total passenger journeys fell by more than 4.5million to just under 112.5m, with 790,000 fewer trips taken last year. While ‘cross-city and orbital connections’ have reduced the need for passengers to take multiple buses, the NTA said it could only account for some of the impact on numbers.

Revenue increases of €25m in the past three years and 7.4 per cent since 2013, to €184.85m, have coincided with increases in fares. Last year, Leap card charges increased 2.7 per cent and cash fares rose 8.9 per cent. The report also found Dublin Bus vehicles travelled 50.3million km last year, down from 56.5million in 2010. Separately, a Eurobarometer survey has shown Irish people’s use of public transport is below the EU average and 44 per cent are dissatisfied with the price of their public transport service.

Aer Lingus cabin crew deal agreed AER Lingus flights will operate as scheduled next week after cabin crew accepted an interim Labour Court recommendation. Impact said it ‘forms a good basis for the settlement of the issues in dispute’. Among its recommendations are a five-days-on, three-days-off roster for short-haul staff, the hiring of 20 new cabin crew, a third day off for staff working the San Francisco route and the restoration of travel concessions withdrawn after last month’s strike. Transport minister Leo Varadkar said: ‘The Court has plotted a path forward for both sides based on a further process of engagement.’

Obama vows to stop march of insurgents into Baghdad BARACK OBAMA last night refused to rule out taking military action against Islamist militants marching on Baghdad. The president said he was looking at ‘all options’ to help Iraq stop the growing insurgency. When asked if the US was considering drone strokes or other action, Mr Obama replied: ‘I don’t rule out anything because we have a stake in making sure these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold in Iraq.’ His comments came as militants led by the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS) continued their advance towards the Iraqi capital after taking control of the major cities of Mosul and Tikrit in the north. They vowed to take the fight into

It ordered women to stay in their homes and warned it would cut off the hands of thieves. Men more likely to go the distance with fitness plans YOU are more likely to see women trying to shed the pounds on a weight-loss programme than men – but they are also more likely to quit, research shows. More women take up exercise and diets because they are seen as ‘feminine activities’, it is claimed. Men try to fight the bulge only once they perceive it could be harming their health or they want

Exercise groups in sports clubs – such as football clubs – are popular with men and have low drop-out rates, it is claimed. ‘Men prefer more factual information on how to lose weight and more emphasis on physical activity in weight-loss programmes,’ said Dr Flora Douglas, from the

University of Aberdeen’s Rowett Institute. ‘Group-based programmes showed benefits by facilitating support for men with similar health problems and some individual tailoring of advice helped men. ‘Programmes which were situated in a sporting venue, where participants had a strong sense of affiliation, showed low drop-out rates and high satisfaction.’ And obese men who cut calories lose more weight than those who exercise, but don’t cut down on food.

Those consuming 75g per day or more were twice as likely to die from heart failure than those who ate 25g or less. Amazon throws hat into music streaming ring AMAZON is launching a music streaming service in the US – with free membership for subscribers to its Prime shipping service. The retail giant is going to offer more than 1million tracks through Prime Music. But this is sizeably less than the 20million songs that Spotify has in its catalogue. And new music fans may end up disappointed – many albums on the app will be at least six months old. To access the ad-free streaming, shoppers have to sign up for Prime, which costs $99 (€73) a year. Customers then also receive free shipping on Amazon items and a library of TV shows to stream. Amazon’s Steve Boom believes the

World

by DOMiniC yEATMAn service will pay for itself. He said: ‘If people come to Amazon for their music needs, they become better and longerterm customers.’ The company has reached deals with most record labels, apart from Universal Music. This means that no albums by artists such as Katy Perry, Taylor Swift or Jay-Z will be available for streaming. The deal comes soon after Apple unveiled plans to acquire Dr Dre’s music streaming and headphones brand, Beats, for €2.2billion. Sales of downloaded songs fell by one per cent in the US last year, while streaming revenues went up by 39 per cent in the same period.

Samsung ‘sets bar higher’ on latest tablet SAMSUNG has unveiled its latest tablet, claiming it is ‘setting the bar higher’ with the device, its thinnest and lightest to date. The Galaxy Tab S, available from next month, features colourenhancing technology which it claims remains clear and bright even in sunlight, ensuring the ‘best visual experience anywhere’. For the first time, Galaxy users will be able to make and receive calls directly from their phone to the tablet. The Galaxy Tab S, which comes in two sizes, 10.5in and 8.4in, and two colours – titanium bronze or dazzling white – also allows consumers to multi-task by surfing the web, watching videos, sharing content and making calls without having to close applications. Samsung’s JK Shin said: ‘With the Galaxy Tab S, Samsung is setting the bar higher for the entire mobile industry.’

Game over for girl killers... they’re just too much work THE makers of the top-selling Assassin’s Creed decided not to include female characters in their latest game – because it would have been too much hard work. Ubisoft had considered having a female assassin in the seventh instalment of the series, Assassin’s Creed – Unity. But during development, the company realised it would mean re-doing a lot of animation and costumes. Ubisoft opted for four male protagonists instead in the story set on the streets of Paris during the French Revolution. This week a petition entitled ‘Dis-

content at lack of representation in AC: Unity protagonists’ was set up on Change.org website. It has attracted more than 4,000 supporters in about three days. Former animation director of the series Johnathan Cooper said it would only have been ‘a day or two’s work’. Responding to Ubisoft’s comments on Twitter, Mr Cooper, who worked on Assassin’s Creed 3, said work could be cut by creating a female template and using that to replace key animations.

Further criticism was heaped on to Ubisoft after it was pointed out that ten studios are working on the game. Ubisoft’s technical director, James Thereien said: ‘It would have doubled the work on those things. And I mean it’s something the team really wanted, but we had to make a decision... It’s unfortunate, but it’s a reality of game development.’ In a statement, Ubisoft said: ‘We recognise the valid concern around diversity in video game narrative. ‘We’ve featured Aveline, Connor, Adewale and Altair in Assassin’s Creed games and we continue to look at showcasing diverse characters.’

SOME might say she is a bit of a funny bunny. But Penny Brown has no regrets about manipulating her figure in a quest to make herself look like cartoon character Jessica Rabbit. She’s had two boob jobs to take her bust from an H to an O cup. And she squeezes her waist into rib-crushing corsets for up to 23 hours a day – all in pursuit of that ultrahourglass figure. ‘I’ve been obsessed with Jessica Rabbit from a really early age,’ said the military wife. ‘I think she is incredibly sexy and there’s a real power and strength to her character. I’ve always wanted to copy that – at five I was already thinking about breast implants.’ Australian Penny first wore a corset in 2012 to pose for saucy pictures for husband Cooper, 28, a US airman. She became so fascinated with the effect on her shape that she began wearing the garment 24 hours a day to ‘train’ her body. After four months, she had lost 38cm (15in) from her waist. The 25-year-old, who lives on Japanese island Okinawa – where her husband is stationed – cannot eat a proper meal in the corset as it is so tight. Any kind of strenuous exertion is out of the question. But she said: ‘I’m kind of a go hard or go home sort of person. I wanted to make my naturally small waist and big hips and boobs more extreme and wonderful.’

Colombian wins Impac Dublin Literary Award JUAN GABRIEL VÁSQUEZ has won the world’s most lucrative book prize for his novel The Sound Of Things Falling. The Colombian writer will take home €100,000 after beating off competition from 152 titles entered in the International Impac Dublin Literary Award. ‘I’ve always felt at home in Dublin and in Irish literature. So in more ways than one, this prize is a sort of homecoming,’ Mr Vásquez (pictured) said. Two authors from Ireland – Donal Ryan and David Park – were in the ten-strong shortlist.

Lizardry or wizardry? Mother ‘gives birth to reptile’ by nicOLE LE MARiE IT’S the kind of X-File that would have Scully moaning: ‘Let’s go home, Mulder, we’re wasting our time.’ But a team of medical officers was dispatched to investigate the strange case of the woman who ‘gave birth’ to a lizard in Indonesia. They wanted to know what happened to leave villagers so convinced by the story that they wanted to lynch the ‘mother’ for witchcraft. Debi Nubatonis, 31, was threatened in the village of Oenunto after midwife Josephine Wadu brought the lizard to a health centre, saying she had delivered it.

Rik suffered heart seizure after early run RIK MAYALL suffered an ‘acute cardiac event’ before dying at home on Monday. The comic had just returned from a morning run, his widow said yesterday. Barbara Mayall’s comments came after West London coroner’s court said the postmortem examination had proved inconclusive and further tests were needed. Mrs Mayall said her family had received ‘thousands and thousands’ of condolences from around the world. Many people had seen the 56-year-old – who shot to fame in The Young Ones – during his usual run on the morning of his death, she said. Mrs Mayall (pictured, with her late husband) thanked the press ‘for their discretion’. ‘I am sure that you all know Rik’s response would be something along the lines of, “Well thanks very much all of you, now f*** off!”’ she said.

blame humans for birds’ loss, not cats

I

n response to the letter yesterday regarding cats and bells, I would like to say that the main reason there is a substantial decline in bird populations is because of human meddling in ecosystems through pollution, agriculture, the use of pesticides and rubbish being dumped in lakes and rivers and on the sides of roads. Birds then feed from toxic materials or plastics, and this along with our encroachment on their habitats contributes to the decline – not the very few, comparatively, that are killed by domestic or feral cats. Wakeupandsmellthecoffee ■ If Anto had a cat himself he would realise the futility of putting a bell on a cat to warn birds. Most

cats can get rid of their collars if they want to (we must have bought 20 collars for our cat before we finally gave up) and those who haven’t got the knack can learn to creep up on a bird or mouse without the bell making a sound. So if you love birds then respect your environment, that’s the best thing you can do to ensure bird populations survive. Sit tight: Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Sarah Gadon are cousins raised together in a time of prejudice, money worries and slavery law suits

Music to Dad’s ears

icture a Jane Austen tale with an on-trend 12 Years A Slave spin and you’ll get a sense of this bonnet ‘n’ britches romance, loosely based on the real-life story of Dido elizabeth Belle. the illegitimate daughter of a white royal Navy admiral (Matthew Goode) and an enslaved African woman, ‘Belle’ (Gugu Mbatha-raw’s star is born) was raised as a lady alongside her cousin, Lady elizabeth Murray (Sarah Gadon). As such she’s in a society nowoman’s land: her status ‘too high to dine with the servants’ but ‘too low’ to dine with either guests or her own family. Yet just as we’re settling in for a cinderella tale, set within a cosily familiar fantasy world of heaving bosoms, girlish confidences and husband hunting, the plot tosses us a curve bouquet: the resilient Belle finds she’s an heiress while her cousin is penniless. Add in that Belle’s uncle was the lord chief justice (tom Wilkinson), the most powerful man in england after the king, who happens to be embroiled in the Zong case (an insurance trial about a slave ship that supposedly drowned its ‘cargo’), and there’s pleasingly more at stake here than merely bagging Mr right. ‘We women are but their property,’ elizabeth tells her cousin in one of the script’s more onthe-nose feminist moments. But this Downtonesque melodrama wears its issues lightly, with barbed comedy provided by the likes of Miranda richardson as a scheming mama and tom ‘Draco Malfoy’ Felton (an actor never afraid to pair a raised eyebrow with a sneer) as an unsuitable suitor. that Sam reid’s earnest Mr Darcy figure is neither dashing nor intensely charismatic is a shame, but Gugu is a radiant flame your eyes can’t help fluttering towards. Director Amma Asante keeps the pace galloping along and if the ending ‘ta-dahs’ into too pat a melodrama, the real-life story will keep you hooked in corset-tight.

Perpetual slowmotion quirkiness

gIg REvIEw Dolly Parton HHHH✩

In the flesh Dolly Parton doesn’t disappoint. The breasts are just as pneumatic as you’d expect, the rhinestones just as plentiful and dazzling, the hair just as large and immobile (‘Don’t break it,’ she quips to a roadie when his hand brushes off her barnet). At 68, Dolly has lost nothing of her sparkle and, from the moment she arrives on stage, has the capacity 02 crowd in the palm of her impeccably manicured little hand. After a crowd-pleasing, thighslapping Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That?, Parton launches into the selfpenned title track from her new album Blue Smoke; it’s the kind of rootsy showstopper that feels like it’s been around for aeons. Her bluegrass-tinged take on Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice is achingly beautiful and underscores her ability to shed new light on a classic. Dolly being Dolly, this performance is peppered with homespun, we-werepoor-but-we-were-happy tales from her Tennessee childhood and Coat Of Many Colours, her most heartfelt autobiographical hit, receives a particularly warm and misty-eyed response from her Dublin fans. She saves her biggest sing-along numbers – Islands In The Stream, 9 To 5 – for the last part of the show before a lighters-aloft bluechip encore, I Will Always Love You. Parton certainly knows how to jolly up her audience with guitar-fuelled crossover country hits, but it’s in her quieter moments, including an incredible a capella Little Sparrow, that she proves herself not just a gifted showwoman but an incredible artist.

ts spivet (12A) HHH✩✩

From the director of Amélie comes another whimsical visual patisserie. TS Spivet (newcomer Kyle Catlett) is a precociously talented ten-year-old inventor who lives on a remote Montana ranch with his preoccupied, beetle-fancier mother (Helena Bonham Carter), his two siblings and his father (Callum Keith Rennie), a cowboy fetishist who relaxes of an evening by having the dog lick chocolate off his toes. One day, the Smithsonian calls to say that TS’s design for a perpetual motion machine has won a prestigious prize and, in a decision largely triggered by a recent family tragedy, he decides to set off alone, across the States, on an overwhelmingly picturesque, picaresque journey to collect it. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet may declare that his slowly paced film is for ‘seven to 77-year-olds’ but younger children may well struggle with the darker themes of death and grief. The 3D-shot scenery (no dodgy postconversions here), however, is knockout gorgeous. I hit quirky overload way before the end but if your favourite Martin Scorsese film is Hugo then this is a ‘don’t miss’. LI-Z

Apart from Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano, not many techno producers have emerged from South America. However, being geographically cut off from electronic music hubs in Europe and the US hasn’t harmed Jonas Kopp (pictured). Over the past seven years, the Argentinean artist has put out a series of stripped back, nononsense techno records for labels like Curle, Stroboscopic Artefacts and Deeply Rooted. This year has seen Kopp’s star continue to ascend. He has released a record on Chris Liebing’s CLR label and has performed at high-profile clubs around Europe. Catch him at the sweaty confines of the Twisted Pepper this weekend – the next time he plays a gig in Ireland, it could well be at a festival’s main stage.

Despite the stage name, no one knows for sure if anonymous producer Sophie is a man or woman. What is beyond doubt however is the fact that the recent ‘Bipp/Elle’ single on Glasgow label Numbers was a breath of fresh air, joining the dots between electro, garage and dubstep. Sophie is joined at the Button Factory by DJ Éclair Fifi, whose blend of hip-hop and party tunes has won her a residency on Rinse FM and regular slots on BBC Radio 1. Spain v Netherlands (kick-off 8pm) in Group B is far and away the stand-out clash of the group stages. A repeat of the grumpy 2010 final that saw Iniesta (above) edge the Spaniards home and most of the Dutch side booked, it’s a chance to assess whether Spain’s golden generation is past its prime. The Dutch, coached by Manchester United’s new boss Louis van Gaal, will be out for revenge and to show they’re footballing artists, not cloggers. Nonetheless, we’re predicting a draw.

Well, here’s our chance to find out as they join 13 other famous-ish faces in the rapid-fire generalknowledge quiz show. Aussie comic Adam Hills rattles off the questions – don’t dumb it down now, Adam...

Comedy grinds with tragedy with mixed results as Mr Sloane tries to prove he’s not a square by getting down with the kids at his first disco. Given that Nick Frost (just about) showed he can move his hefty frame when he needs to in Cuban Fury (see New On Demand), he does a fine job of appearing rhythmically challenged. That’s the light relief. It’s the women in Mr Sloane’s life that bring the grief: Ophelia Lovibond’s Robin drops her groovy-chick mask and exwife Janet (Olivia Colman, above) causes grievous bodily harm to a cake.

Wicklow wizard Dara Ó Briain returns once again to the presenter’s seat for another season of this popular and raucously irreverent topical quiz show. Guests will include countryman Ed Byrne, Milton Jones, Romesh Ranganathan and Katherine Ryan, all trying to outdo each other by way of the stand-up format. Obviously, the gag rate depends very much on the panel on the night.

Let’s hope the clueless plods charge her – the underrated King does a great line in bitching and misery so the trial would no doubt be a good laugh to watch.

Mr ‘Happy’ himself, Pharrell Williams, is along for the fun, as are Cher Lloyd and Nicole ‘Beyoncé Lite’ Scherzinger. Bafflingly, ITV doyen Phillip Schofield has somehow managed to get crowbarred in there too.

Twitter boss signs off with tweet

HAVING mapping the Earth’s surface with its Street View service, it looks like Google is now planning to expand its activities into space. The web giant is talking to Virgin Galactic about a deal to acquire a stake in Richard Branson’s $2billion (€1.48bn) space tourism venture. The meetings are part of Google’s plans to provide internet access to billions by launching hundreds of satellites and using drones and balloons. It is thought a deal will involve Google investing €22million in return for a small stake of around 1.5 per cent in the Virgin Galactic holding company. The news comes a day after Google announced it was buying start-up satellite firm Skybox Imaging for €370m. Celebrities including Ashton Kutcher, Katy Perry and Branson himself are said to have paid €148,000 to secure seats on the venture’s inaugural flights. Friends Branson and Google’s Larry Page have registered the name Virgle for use on future collaborations.

ENTREPRENEUR Jackie Lavin made some controversial comments very recently on RTÉ’s Prime Time about third-level education. She said college graduates haven’t a clue when it comes to the business world. A three-to-four year full-time degree is a total luxury. Young people would get comparable results just studying by night or doing a distance course. Real-life should trump getting stuck in the books, she said. Jackie’s ‘school of hard knocks’ philosophy is attractive on the face of it. But it would be a very sad day indeed if our younger generation were to be made to feel guilty or self-conscious for undertaking a full-time degree or qualification. A school to workplace move can work for some. However, it most assuredly won’t work for everyone. And in a knowledgeIt would be sheer driven and relationshipmadness to based economy downgrade the it would be value of intellectual sheer madness to downgrade endeavour the value placed on intellectual endeavour and personal development of school-leavers. You will work for the majority of your life, so why rush this? Even when learning at college does not have immediate or direct application in the world of work, it is a very precious thing. Froome maintained his 12-second lead at the top of the Criterium du Dauphine standings after a tough fifth stage yesterday. Froome’s Team Sky team-mates combined to ensure he reeled in closest rival Alberto Contador in a stage eventually won by Simon Spilak of the Katusha team. The result leaves Froome (pictured) out in front while Kelderman has moved level with Contador in second place in the overall standings as a result of the six bonus seconds he earned at the line. Warring players cost counties €10,000 in fines DISCIPLINARY chiefs have come down hard on warring Armagh and Cavan, dishing out five separate bans for players and county board fines totalling €10,000. Players from both sides got involved in a melee ahead of last Sunday’s provincial quarter-final clash at the Gaelic Grounds. Cavan attacker Martin Dunne was left with a broken hand and was one of two Cavan players hit with proposed one match bans. Fergal Flanagan is the other. Hosts Armagh have received the greater punishment with three of their players sanctioned; All-Ireland medallist Andy

Both county boards were last night considering their options though Armagh are expected to appeal with Cavan apparently ready to take their punishment. As things stand, the three key Armagh players are banned for their Ulster semifinal tie against Tyrone or Monaghan. Dunne and Flanagan will be suspended for Cavan’s opening round qualifier tie against Westmeath though Dunne’s injury ruled him out anyhow.

He mixed with the world’s best milers in a top-class field, with world indoor 1500m champion Ayanleh Souleiman coming out on top in 3:49.49. ‘I’m getting close to a big breakthrough,’ said Robinson (St Coca’s) – who was running his second Diamond League in

six days – trackside afterwards. ‘It’s just that last 200m. If I can sort that out then I’m on for a big one. I was hurting out there but it’s good to be running my second Diamond League in six

‘I’m getting close to a big breakthrough’ days and hopefully I’ll get more opportunities.’ Earlier in the meet, Laura Crowe finished second in the national 1500m in a tactical race in 4:17.46 – won by Charlotta Fougberg in 4:13.58. ‘I was hoping for more and wanted to win the race,’ said the disappointed An Riocht athlete afterwards. ‘I shouldn’t have been so far behind at the finish

New personal best: Robinson but I’ll have to move on.’ UCD’s Sarah Lavin was unlucky in the women’s 100m hurdles, clipping the second last

and having to settle for second in 13.60 seconds. ‘I know I’m in personal best shape,’ said Lavin, who also had to contend with a –2.8m/s headwind. ‘I’m surprised I hit the hurdle going into the headwind but there’s definitely more there.’ Lavin is still aiming to run a European (development athlete) standard of 13.38 which will surely come with more favourable conditions and a clean run over the hurdles. She is set to race again at the EAP meet in Geneva, Switzerland tomorrow. Meanwhile, recently crowned new Irish record holder Tom Barr is set to line-up in the 400m Hurdles as well as his sister Jessie. Sprinters Phil Healy and Steven Colvert are also set to compete.

Three players – robbie diack, Kieran Marmion and rodney ah You – made their debuts last weekend but are not included this time around. However, three more are poised to make their international bows off the bench with Herring, Cronin and reid all set to be introduced in the course of the second Test in Tucuman tomorrow. ‘I think it is a massive day for them,’ Schmidt added. ‘We have been massively impressed with how they have acquitted themselves in the training environment, in the way they have prepared themselves and made sure that the training changes are reasonably seamless. ‘I don’t think any of those three guys are the finished product but it will be another step toward giving them the confidence to continue to grow and hopefully add further value to us.’

Graeme mcDowell celebrated confirmation of the open championship’s return to his home course of Portrush by claiming a share of the clubhouse lead in the US open yesterday. mcDowell fired an eagle, one birdie and one bogey to shoot an opening 68 at Pinehurst, joining american Kevin Na at the top of the leaderboard on two under par. Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who can overtake adam Scott as world number one by claiming his first major title on Sunday, was among a six-strong group in the clubhouse on one under as the early starters made the most of more receptive greens than had been expected. and six-time runner-up Phil mickelson, looking to become only the sixth player to win all four major titles, was another shot back on level par alongside england’s Ian Poulter and ryder cup hopeful Joost luiten. Sheffield amateur matt Fitzpatrick briefly held a share of the lead after starting with two birdies in his first three

McDowell: ‘Head’s in right place’ holes, the 19-year-old eventually signing for a 71 despite a penalty shot on his penultimate hole when his ball moved as he prepared to play his third shot. That was still one better than playing partner and defending champion Justin rose, who at least recovered from being four over par at the turn. Former champion rory mcIlroy was alongside Fitzpatrick on one over

after struggling to get the pace of the greens. mcDowell admitted the early starters had enjoyed the luck of the draw and benefitted from tournament officials deciding to water the course after the expected rain failed to materialise. ‘I spent the last few days just preparing myself mentally for the challenge, knowing that this golf course wasn’t going to give much and it was only going to take,’ said 2010 champion mcDowell, who holed from 10 feet for eagle on the fifth after a superb three-wood approach from 248 yards. I got my head in the right place the last few days. It wasn’t my best ball-striking display, but you don’t have to strike it amazing around here, you just have to position the ball correctly at all times.’ Speaking about the open championship returning to Portrush in 2019, he added: ‘That’s extremely exciting. To bring an open championship back to Northern Ireland where I grew up is very special.’

Brennan: It’s going to be a tight finish tonight with both sides in goalscoring form

cHAMpiOn sAinTs TAkE On LEAguE LEADERs DunDALk

Killian Brennan is billing tonight’s topversus-third clash between league leaders Dundalk and reigning champions St Patrick’s athletic at Oriel Park as just another game. and the St Pat’s midfielder insists all the pressure is on Dundalk in front of what’s expected to be their biggest crowd of the season. ‘The game can be built up to be massive before we go into the break,’ said Brennan. ‘But the lads are just training away, keeping the heads down and working as we normally do. ‘There’s no pressure on us as we’re the away side going there in a one-off game, trying to get a result. That’s what we always do, and we’ll be heading out to do the same (tonight).’ With both sides banging in goals for fun at the moment, Brennan isn’t expecting any shortage of goalmouth action at Oriel Park. ‘i don’t see it being a 0-0 at all. We’ve been scoring a lot of goals lately and Dundalk have been doing well too. ‘it’ll be another tight one and it could come down to one moment, be it a mistake, a setpiece, or something like that. But whatever happens, we’ll go into the game positive like we always do.’ St Pat’s will give skipper Ger O’Brien every chance to prove his fitness following a groin problem, though young central defender Sean Hoare is out with an ankle injury. David McMillan will again lead the line for Dundalk in the absence of Patrick Hoban who has had a minor knee operation. Keith Ward and Stephen O’Donnell are also out injured while manager Stephen Kenny makes a change in central defender due to andy Boyle being suspended.

cool-hand Hoolahan finds his mojo again by pARAic MORgAn Wes HoolaHan admits the Republic of Ireland’s end-of-season campaign has helped soothe the pain of norwich’s relegation from the Barclays Premier league. The 32-year-old playmaker met up with his international team-mates last month while still coming to terms with norwich’s failure to secure their top-flight status, and with his own future uncertain as a result. However, the chance to show Ireland boss Martin o’neill what he can do – an opportunity he was rarely afforded by predecessor Giovanni Trapattoni – has meant a positive end to a difficult campaign. Hoolahan said: ‘obviously it wasn’t a good way to end it, getting relegated with norwich. It’s not nice. ‘But these last three or four weeks have got my confidence back up again and I am buzzing again for playing. ‘It’s been great. I played three of the four games, so it was nice to come out with that. ‘obviously the results are disappointing and hopefully come september, we will be all heads down and ready to win.’ Hoolahan started the 2-1 home defeat by Turkey, the goalless draw with Italy at Craven Cottage and the 5-1 hammering by Portugal in new Jersey during the early hours of Wednesday morning as the wheels rather came off for an injury-hit Republic. But while the fixtures have proved informative for o’neill as he has cast an eye over his squad, it is the business of qualification for euro 2016 – a process which starts in Georgia in september – which is what really matters.

Brothers in arms: Wes Hoolahan (front) and David Meyler at training in New Jersey pIctuRe: INpHO

Hoolahan said: ‘You want to play against the best teams and you want to test yourself. ‘The last three games we have tested ourselves and it will stand us in good stead for the september game.’ Ireland will hope the Metlife stadium will be a distant memory when they run out against Georgia after a game which always looked difficult on paper proved alarmingly so. The World Cup-bound Portuguese, bolstered by the return from injury of star man Cristiano Ronaldo, raced into a 3-0 lead be-

fore half-time, and after James McClean pulled one back for the Republic, struck twice again to kill the game off. Hoolahan said: ‘It was a difficult game, a difficult start for us. We had a bad start, so it was obviously a tough night for us. ‘We started the second half really well. We created a lot of chances, we moved the ball better than we had. ‘But they hit us on the counter-attack a lot of times with some great balls. You are playing against one of the best teams in the world.’

Fred-ful dive: Brazil’s Fred is tackled by Dejan Lovren in the penalty box picture: epa

Plenty to Cro about as fast paced hosts win opener by JAMES BOYLAn

A NEYMAR brace rescued Brazil from a shock opening slip-up, but it was a farfrom convincing start from the hosts. After going behind to a Marcelo own goal, the most-hyped player of the tournament got Brazil out of jail with a fine firsthalf strike before converting a dubious penalty in the second half. Oscar sealed victory late on but the scoreline flattered the favourites, who toiled for long periods against industrious opponents. With playmaking gems Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic providing the ammunition, the Balkan outfit were dangerous on the counter from the off, with Ivica Olic heading an early warning shot wide. And the script was well and truly torn up in the 11th minute when a low delivery from Olic skimmed off Nikica Jelavic’s boot and then off Marcelo’s left foot before trickling in to break the deadlock. A livewire Neymar was increasingly

stretching Croatia, though, with Paulinho and Oscar both forcing Stipe Pletikosa into saves. Neymar became the first player in the referee’s book when his flailing arm caught Modric’s face. However, the Barcelona superstar showed his Golden Boot credentials moments later when he hurtled towards goal and dragged a slightly scuffed edge-ofarea shot past Pletikosa to level it. And Croatia were incensed in the 71st minute when Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura ruled the previously anonymous Fred had been dragged to the ground by Dejan Lovren in the penalty area. Pletikosa got hands to Neymar’s spotkick but the ball still hit the net to the relief of the sea of yellow in the Arena De Sao Paulo. Julio Cesar kept out an Ivan Perisic rocket shot as Croatia rallied in the final minutes but Oscar’s powerful toe-poke past the slow-to-dive Pletikosa was the killer blow.

KEY BATTLE

Andres Iniesta v Jordy Clasie Barcelona midfield artisan Iniesta (left) scored the injury-time winner when the two European juggernauts met in the World Cup final in South Africa four years ago and remains a hugely influential figure. The 30-year-old’s prime job is to keep the ball ticking over as Vicente del Bosque’s team seek to win a fourth straight major tournament. He will have to work hard to win his battle with Feyenoord’s emerging talent Jordy Clasie (right). A £15million summer target for Holland coach Louis van Gaal when he takes over at Manchester United, Clasie’s passing accuracy has been likened to Paul Scholes.

Louis van Gaal is a regular winner of big prizes, including the European Cup with Ajax.

Most likely to see red Sergio Busquets. The phrase ‘tough tackler’ could have been invented for the Barcelona man.

Nigel de Jong could have seen red for a chest-high tackle on Xabi Alonso in the 2010 final.

Neymar, Brazil’s Barcelona talisman, proved the key for the 3-1 victory in a sparkling – and controversial – match that may well set the tone for a World Cup of thrills and skills. each Brazil goal, two scored by Neymar – the second after a dubious penalty won by Fred – and a third by Oscar was greeted by a flurry of fireworks bursting across the Sao Paulo skyline.

Cesc returns to Bridge gap at Chelsea CesC FABregAs completed his transfer to Chelsea yesterday claiming he has ‘unfinished business’ in the Premier League. It is believed Barcelona received a break-even £30million for the spain international, who has signed a five-year deal. Fabregas came through the ranks at Barcelona before joining Arsenal but, with only an FA Cup winners’ medal to show for his time, returned to his boyhood club in 2011. Arsenal were first in the queue for Fabregas, who was also pursued by manchester United in recent weeks after a failed bid for him last summer. ‘I do feel I have unfinished business in the Premier League and now’s the right time for me to return,’ said Fabregas ahead of spain’s World Cup opener against Holland today. The 27-year-old arrives at Chelsea just as midfielders Frank Lampard and David Luiz – bound for Paris saint-germain – leave west London.

‘No change’ in Dubs’ form since last year’s Wexford Leinster semi

Fearful: Ex-boss Kelleher

Former boss Humphrey Kelleher believes Dublin may be about to walk into a Wexford Park ambush. The Leinster hurling champions begin their defence of the Bob o’Keeffe Cup tomorrow evening with a semi-final tie against old rivals Wexford. It’s a repeat of last year’s Leinster championship fixture which required a replay at Parnell Park to decide. Dublin went on to achieve a famous Leinster title breakthrough

though their form since has been patchy. They lost their All-Ireland semifinal tie and narrowly avoided

‘Dublin are going down with no form’ relegation from Division 1A of the League. As for Wexford, they’ve got home advantage and the revenge factor on their side while they also hammered 5-19 past Antrim.

‘I’ll be going down to Wexford Park with hope rather than anticipation,’ said Kelleher. ‘I don’t believe this is a foregone conclusion in any way. ‘Dublin are basically going down with no form whatsoever. They haven’t played a game in 10 or 11 weeks and that was a relegation play-off. ‘There has been nothing there, to my eyes, to show that Dublin has moved on from last year. If that’s anything to go by, then I’d be genuinely fearful.

‘If I had to call it, I think they probably will win but it will be very tight and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was another draw.’ Former Waterford ‘keeper Kelleher managed Dublin in 2004 and 2005. He expressed fears over iconic forward Conal Keaney’s form this year. ‘He hasn’t been the same type of man at all,’ said Kelleher. ‘There’s not that same great drive there for two or three years.’
