Ireland sizzles

Water and pet safety alert as temperature is soaring WITH Ireland forecast to be hotter than Ibiza today, the Coast Guard has appealed to sun seekers not to bring toy boats and dinghies to the seaside. Fergus Cooney of Howth Coast Guard said over the past two weeks it has dealt with a number of dangerous incidents on the Dublin coast involving toy inflatable craft and flotation devices bought in supermarkets. Both adults and children had put their lives in danger, he said. Mr Cooney added: ‘We are asking people with inflatables not to go to the coast with them. They are not suitable for going out into the sea.’ He also highlighted people not wearing life jackets as a source of concern and said they should be worn regardless of the size of the boat. Mr Cooney called on anyone who does spot an unsuitable craft on the sea to contact the Coast Guard so it can prevent a potentially dangerous incident as soon as possible.

by joanne ahern Meanwhile, Bord na Móna is reminding people that it is illegal to set fires in growing vegetation between March 1 and August 28 and appealed for the public to report fires to gardaí or the fire service immediately. And the ISPCA has appealed to drivers not to leave their pets in cars, saying even ten minutes in hot conditions ‘can prove fatal’ and an open window is not enough. Cars should be well ventilated while on the road, and pets should be given regular water breaks en route and at their destination, spokeswoman Carmel Murray said. With a high of 27.1C in Newport, Co Mayo, yesterday was the hottest June day in five years, with 13 hours of sunshine across the country. Today will hit 26C, topping Ibiza’s expected high of 24. Both the sunburn and pollen count indexes remain high.

abused orangutans sent back to school to learn how to go ape in the wild again

Cute classmates: Student orangutans are shown the ropes at the centre pictures: NGc/iNterNatioNal aNimal rescue by NICOLE LE MARIE THERE are not many schools out there where dangling from trees, walking tightropes and sneaking off for a cuddle with your fellow students is actively encouraged. But then again, these are not just any students. These loveable little apes did not have the best start in life and have been enrolled at orangutan ‘baby school’, before hopefully graduating to ‘forest school’. With their big eyes, fuzzy ginger locks and an impressive gymnastic ability, you would think no one

Lessons in lovely would ever dream of harming them. However, it seems there are some who are not won over by their charm. From naughty Melky to the extremely affectionate Bunga, all of these apes were abandoned, mistreated, trapped in cages, or witnessed their mothers being slaughtered.

Inseparable best friends Rocky and Rickina were found hugging each other – and even when they were rescued, refused to part. Rickina was later discovered to have scars from the machete attack she survived, but saw her mother killed. As a result of their treatment, many

did not get the chance to learn basic orangutan skills but they are now being shown the ropes at the International Animal Rescue’s Orangutan Rehab Centre in West Kalimantan in Borneo, Indonesia. By the end of ‘forest school’ they will have perfected their jungle

skills and can be returned to the wild. Karmele Llano-Sanchez, director at the rehab centre joked she and husband Argitoe Ranting don’t have kids because ‘I have 65 already’. Orangutan Rescue: Back to the Wild premieres on Monday at 8pm on Nat Geo WILD.

Hikers trapped in Language school wild shrubbery students’ discount A COUPLE had to be rescued from a five-hour ordeal after they got stuck in a rhododendron forest in the Knockmealdown Mountains on the Waterford/Tipperary border. The walkers, in their 50s and from Munster, took a different route than normal and found themselves stuck when the terrain ahead got too steep. They called emergency services using their mobile phone on Sunday. Describing the terrain they were dealing with as ‘jungle-like’, Jimmy Barry from the South East Mountain Rescue told RTÉ News it took the rescue party two hours to crawl 400m through muck and slime from the lakeside to reach them. A boat carried the party to safety.

INTERNATIONAL English language students affected by the recent closure of several private colleges are to be offered alternative courses in ‘high-quality, approved English language schools’ at a heavily discounted rate. The new courses will cost €60 per week – a 70 per cent discount – and will be co-ordinated by the Marketing English in Ireland industry body. Applications will be taken from June 23. A new website, www.studenttaskforce.ie, has also been established to provide information for students on issues around their immigration status.

Thousands to have medical cards restored ABOUT 15,300 people with serious health conditions can expect to go back on to free healthcare under the discretionary medical card scheme, the Government has announced. Anyone who had a discretionary card or GP visit card taken from them following an eligibility review from July 2011 to May this year will be re-examined by health bosses without having to reapply to get back in the system. The Government also said it accepts the initial review of seriously ill people produced ‘unintended consequences’. ‘Much anecdotal evidence points to the fact that some persons with an acute medical condition, or a lifelong condition have lost their medical cards, an outcome the Government could not stand over,’ the Department of Health said in a statement. It said the new review will take account of acute and lifelong conditions, disability, as well as financial means. Health Minister Dr James Reilly apol-

Agreement on reviewing cancelled discretionary and GP cards was ordered following intense criticism of Dr Reilly’s handling of cost-cutting in the free healthcare arena. The Department of Health said that it has been arranged on advice from the attorney general and the opinion of Tony O’Brien, director general of the Health Service Executive. To be eligible for the review, people must have held a medical or GP visit card issued on a discretionary basis but had it withdrawn after completing an eligibility review. The Government has set aside €13million to cover the cost of returning the medical cards.

Pair charged over Dublin Bus damage TWO men have been charged in connection with an incident on a Dublin Bus on Monday night in which a window was smashed on the upper saloon. The two men, aged 19 and 21, boarded the last 122 bus on Dorset Street towards Cabra. Once onboard it is alleged they opened an emergency exit and smashed the window. Both men were taken to Store Street Garda Station where they were charged with criminal damage. They have since been released. A Dublin Bus spokeswoman said it has ‘a firm strategy in place to tackle anti-social behaviour’ on its buses and has a ‘close working relationship’ with An Garda Síochána.

Indie labels hit out at YouTube InDepenDenT record labels have criticised YouTube for what they call a ‘grave error of commercial judgment’ after the company indicated it would block videos from its site from any label which failed to sign up to a new streaming service. The labels say they have been offered unfavourable and nonnegotiable terms for the soonto-be launched subscription service and are urging the video-sharing site to negotiate with them to come to a deal. Indie artists could simply disappear from YouTube as a result of the disagreement. Big names such as Adele and Arctic Monkeys continue to have deals with independent firms.

‘I do’ spend €20k on our wedding IRISH couples spent an average of €20,000 on their big day in 2013 – excluding honeymoons, a new survey has revealed. The research, compiled by wedding website Mrs2Be.ie, found that couples spent more on the venue, band, the dress, transport and honeymoon and less on the photography/video and DJ than other years. Speeches are now more likely to take place before the meal. Mrs2be.ie’s Keith Malone said couples are ‘breaking tradition’ and choosing ‘more independent’ ceremonies. He said: ‘Couples shouldn’t feel they have to spend all that money. The main thing is they enjoy themselves.’

Bid to replace north quay traffic with pedal power NEW plans set to be brought before Dublin City Council could see the city’s north quays overhauled to make way for a two-way cycle track. Proposed by Dublin City Council chief executive Owen Keegan, the plan would significantly reduce the number of cars able to pass through an already congested city traffic corridor. The head of the City Council is hoping it will contribute to the goal of increasing the number of bike journeys in Dublin by four per cent by 2020. If successful, the radical move would introduce a two-way cycle ‘highway’, meaning the closure of a car lane, leaving only a bus lane and one remaining through-way for private motorists.

by LukE HOLOHAn Speaking to the Irish Times, and acknowledging the idea would slow traffic in the area, Mr Keegan said: ‘It is not something that we have to apologise for.’ In part motivated by making cycling more accessible, he added: ‘Cycling has to be for the unbrave as well.’ Dr Mike McKillen, chairman of Cyclist.ie, has fully backed the proposal. He said: ‘You look at census 2011 data, there are about 153,000 people driving a distance of less than five kilometres. Now, do they need to drive five kilometres, when they could walk it or bike it?’

The Green Party has also strongly welcomed Mr Keegan’s bid. Councillor Ciarán Cuffe stated: ‘The Liffey Quays are polluted, dangerous and not fit for their purpose. What we need are wider footpaths, more greenery and decent cycle facilities.’ But news of the proposal hasn’t been entirely well received. Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke questioned if such a scheme would work, saying the road ‘is narrow enough’ and to fit in a bike lane ‘would be too much’, while Independent councillor Nial Ring described the suggestion as ‘madness’. The final proposal is expected to be drawn up in the coming weeks.

LiLo denies booze bash L

INdSAY Lohan has denied she has fallen off the wagon after almost shutting down a party with her wild antics on Monday. The 27-year-old was reportedly knocking back cocktails and puffing away on cigarettes inside London’s Café de Paris for the Moschino LC: M After Party with Patrón Tequila and i-d.

by jEnni McknigHT ‘The party nearly got closed because Lindsay was dancing on tables and smoking inside,’ an eyewitness told me. ‘She arrived with a big crew of people who were all smoking on a table. ‘She seemed to be having fun though, dancing on the sofas around her table and drinking margaritas.’

Lorde has shared the good news that her parents are getting married after almost three decades together. The 17-year-old singer was overjoyed when her father, Vic O’Connor, got down on one knee and popped the question to her mother, New Zealand poet Sonja Yelich. She

tweeted: ‘BEST DAY – went to niagara falls – my dad proposed to my mum after almost 30 years together.’ Fans were quick to congratulate her and noted the opening lyrics to her No.1 hit, Royals, which begins: ‘I’ve never seen a diamond in the flesh.’

But the Mean Girls actress’s fun was cut short after security at the night spot were alerted to her rule breaking. ‘She got quite the telling off from security,’ our source revealed. ‘But then the event organisers had a quiet word and she stopped smoking inside.’ Lohan was also spied looking ‘intimate’ with former The Only Way Is Essex star Tom Kilbey who she has been spotted out with on different occasions during her extended stay in the UK. ‘Her and Tom were close inside and were talking to each other intimately,’ the insider confirmed. But a spokesperson for the actress has denied claims she was back on the booze.

‘Lindsay wasn’t drinking. She’s not drinking at the moment so she shouldn’t have been drinking cocktails.’ Meanwhile, controversial photographer Terry Richardson has denied he slept with Lohan after she included his name on a list of previous sexual conquests which was published by In Touch magazine in March. ‘Somehow she said we spent a romantic night making love at the Chateau Marmont. Which never happened. Then, on the internet, people are like, “He did this and that.” But it’s untrue,’ he told New York Magazine. Lohan confirmed her list of lovers, which included Justin Timberlake and Orlando Bloom, back in April.

I get turned on the most.’

Victoria Beckham still believes in Girl Power after insisting she wants to ‘empower’ women through her clothing line. The 40-year-old said her ‘Victoria Beckham’ range was about more than looking good. Describing who she thinks wears her clothes, the former Spice Girl said: ‘I think that she’s a woman that wants to look good. Appreciates luxury. Likes fashion. I want to make a woman feel her best. I want to empower women.’ The singer-turneddesigner also insisted that, despite her reputation for being moody, she enjoys a laugh. ‘People are probably surprised that I have a sense of humour,’ she told Elle Singapore. ‘I like to take the mickey out of myself. As much as I take what I do very seriously, I also want to have fun.’

Playing Count Dracula has made Luke Evans less squeamish about blood. The actor, 35, had to down pint after pint of beetroot juice for the lead role in Dracula Untold. ‘I’ve drunk so much fake blood I’m fine with it. I’m glad I don’t have to drink anymore,’ he said. J-Lo looks to future after Smart move Jennifer Lopez appears to be bouncing back from her break-up with toyboy lover Caspar Smart. The 44-year-old Ain’t It Funny star has hinted she will draw a new outlook on life now that her twoand-a-half-year relationship with Smart, 27, has gone down in flames. ‘Everyone goes through challenges and the most important thing you can do is to learn and grow from each of them,’ she muses. ‘I’ve had my own personal challenges, but I’ve walked away from them with a new sense of perspective and that’s where I find my greatest strength,’ she told SoulCycle. Youngsters bear arms for both sides as slaughters continue in war-torn country

The child soldiers of Iraq by DOMINIC YEATMAN

ARMED with rifles almost as big as they are, children as young as eight take part in the merciless slaughter of Iraqi prisoners. Footage of the gun-toting children watching as a man is executed by radical Sunni group the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) just a few feet away has emerged. They are unmoved as the condemned prisoner is made to kneel on the ground before being shot in the back of the head – prompting cheers from the crowd of Isis militants in Mosul, northern Iraq. The footage, filmed by Isis, was uploaded to YouTube with the comment: ‘Brutal sectarian war has come again to Iraq and many say it’s as bad as in the dark days of 2007.’ Marzio Babille, Unicef’s representative to Iraq, said: ‘Violence is escalating and children’s lives have been shattered almost overnight.’ Fears that the fighting could reach Baghdad increased as the government of prime minister Nouri al-Maliki struggled to keep hold of Baquba, just 58km north of the capital. There, pro-government Shia militiamen are believed to have murdered at least 44 Sunni prisoners during an attack on a police house. They killed the inmates after Sunni insurgents tried to storm a jail in a bid to free them, it was

But Iraq’s chief military spokesman Lieut Gen Qassim alMoussawi insisted the inmates died when the Sunni insurgents shelled the facility with mortars. Military officials said elite troops and volunteers who have joined security forces to battle Isis were flown to an airport outside Tal Afar on Monday but were immediately pinned down by gunfire and shelling from the militants. Experts baffled as Picasso masterpiece Tourists grab snapshot of The Blue Room reveals mystery man ‘ghost woman of Alcatraz’ AS two for the price of one deals go, it must rank as the ultimate bargain. Using infrared technology, scientists and art experts have discovered a second painting beneath one of Pablo Picasso’s first masterpieces – The Blue Room. It shows a bearded man, in a bow tie and jacket, resting his chin in his hand. But the find has posed experts with a very important question. ‘Our immediate reaction was “Well, who is it?”’ said Patricia Favero, a conservator of The Phillips Collection in Washington, who made the find. ‘We’re still working on answering that,’ she added. Scholars have ruled out a selfportrait. Their best guess is Paris art dealer Ambrose Villard, who hosted Picasso’s first show in 1901.

THE ghosts of some of America’s most notorious inmates are said to haunt former maximum security prison Alcatraz in San Francisco. But why one seemingly showed herself to a British couple left jail staff baffled. Sheila Sillery-Walsh captured the unknown woman on a visit with her partner Paul Rice. The 48-year-old teaching assistant said: ‘When I glanced at the photo on my mobile, I saw this dark female figure in the picture. I looked at the window again and there was no one in the room.’ She contacted prison staff but none of them recognised the woman in the picture taken with an iPhone. School site manager Mr Rice is convinced the figure in the photo taken on April 20 is a ghost, not Ms SilleryWalsh’s reflection.

Jailhouse shock: The spooky figure ‘The woman’s hair and clothing is from a different era, it looks like she’s from the 1930s or 40s,’ the 50-year-old from Birmingham said. ‘I have no logical explanation for the girl in the picture – I’m baffled,’ he added.

‘Ditch aspirin for heart condition’ Go figure: The hidden portrait por of Picasso’s mystery man was found in early masterpiece The Blue Room PicTuREs: AP

DOCTORS should prescribe newer medications rather than using the ‘smokescreen’ of aspirin to treat a common heart condition, experts have advised. Aspirin had commonly been used to treat atrial fibrillation (AF), a heart rhythm disorder, which affects 1.5 per cent of the population. The latest research from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) advises doctors not to prescribe it to AF patients, but to instead use anticoagulant drugs which prevent blood clots forming.

Albania is a major marijuana-producing country in europe and a transit point for other drugs coming from Asia and Latin America to europe. Gangs based in Lazarat are believed

to produce about 900 metric tons of cannabis a year, worth about €4.5billion – just under half of the small Balkan country’s GdP, officials say. In recent weeks authorities launched a nationwide operation to uproot the plantations. six men were arrested in connection with an earlier shoot-out and with attacking a TV news crew.

FRANcE: A Roma teenager is fighting for his life after he was beaten by a gang of armed, masked men who accused him of burglary. The 16-year-old was set upon by the dozen vigilantes on wasteland outside the commuter town of Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, just north of Paris. He was then dumped unconscious into a shopping trolley and left by a main road. He remains ‘critical’ in a coma at Lariboisière hospital.

AMERicA: Most politicians make sure their speeches are family friendly. But LA mayor Eric Garcetti had different ideas when the city’s ice hockey team won the NHL’s Stanley Cup. In a stadium packed with 19,000 fans of the LA Kings, he said: ‘There are two rules in politics: never be pictured with a drink in your hand and never swear. But this is a big f***ing day. Way to go, guys.’ TV commentators apologised for putting him on air.

Violent school closed Brooklyn a hit as a after teenager death name but not in NYc

cHiNA: A military-style school which uses violence to improve students’ behaviour has been shut down after a teenage pupil died. The Boqiang New Concept Training School in Zhengzhou, Henan province, has had its licence revoked following the death of 19year-old internet addict Ling Ling. She was forced to repeatedly fall backward and forward on to a cement floor for two hours. Five people have been arrested.

AMERicA: It’s New York’s most hip borough – and now Brooklyn is a popular baby name. It has risen from 912 in a list of girls’ names to 28 in three years. But, sorry, David and Victoria, real Brooklynites say naming your child Brooklyn is for out-of-towners. The name isn’t catching on there. Credit for its rise goes to the Beckhams, whose eldest son is named after the borough, and TV shows such as Girls that tap into its cool vibe.

WORK near Grand Canal Square, and every day for the last few weeks, a load of kids have been coming down to jump into the canal due to the heat. While a small minority, literally less than a handful, may be drinking, the rest are not. Yet seconds after their arrival, police arrive on bike, horseback, and in a car, to get rid of them. From what I have seen, they are harmless and don’t annoy passersby. If they were acting in an antisocial manner then, by all means, they should go. But it seems local business owners have forgotten what it’s like to be young and so they turn their nose up at the young ones. Where else are kids from the city supposed to go to cool down? And

since when did jumping into the canal become a crime? Fred ■ Dod, nice political broadcast for Stephen Donnelly, and, at the same time, castigating ‘the left’. These anti-change soundbites dominate Ireland’s right-wing media, without of course looking at any specific policies. By your own analysis, if Stephen will not support a party ‘of the left’, he will either stay in opposition or support a government with Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael or, worse

Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys musical. See INTERVIEW p15

this year’s cracking Castlepalooza Festival – the upmarket, bijou bacchanal that takes place each August bank holiday in Charleville Castle – boasts one of its most thoughtfully curated line-ups to date. Metro Life takes a look at some of the headliners gracing the main stage and offers our readers half-price tickets (see page 14)

Move over Coachella, hello Castlepalooza GRUFF RYHS

Who: Sometime frontman with Welsh psychedelic pop rockers Super Furry Animals who’s also released critically-acclaimed music as Neon Neon (with producer Boom Bip) and several solo albums, including this year’s excellent American Interior. Why: Super Furry Animal concerts have seen such stunts as Gruff Rhys drawing bingo numbers to select the set lists – as a solo artist he’s no less unorthodox when it comes to his convivial, offbeat live shows. With his new album he takes a delightfully whimsical approach to researching his relative John Evans, who trekked across the US in search of a mythical tribe of Welshspeaking Native American Indians (and a unicorn) in the 1790s. It sounds esoteric but the songwriting is warm, hook-laden and eminently accessible; for his headline performance at Castlepalooza he promised Metro Life he’d be ‘pulling out all the stops’. In his own words, from the Metro Life archives: ‘The great thing about music is that you can’t articulate it with language. But there’s a whole world of pop and rock out there that’s rarely heard in what’s become an Anglo-American culture. Hopefully, things are changing, and Mandarin will most likely come to dominate the planet’s music.’

NORMAN JAY Who: Legendary British DJ, with an MBE and a catalogue of A-list celebrity friends, whose anything-goes Good Times sets have been played everywhere from the Notting Hill carnival to the Cannes Film Festival. Why: Having been in the biz for almost 40 years, Norman Jay’s record box is stuffed to bursting with everything from original cuts of 1970s New York disco and Northern Soul to the latest urban grooves. Expect a feelgood set at Castlepalooza as he takes to the decks with a trademark set replete with disco, funk, rare groove, jazz and hip hop, delivered with characteristic affability. The legendary DJ is so strongly associated with summer vibes that you almost assume he hibernates for the rest of the year. Practise your curtsey – you’ll be in the presence of DJ royalty. In his own words, from the Metro Life archives: ‘I got into DJing quite by accident. I was hopeless at everything else but discovered I had a knack for making people dance and getting them to enjoy themselves.’ ... ‘I can honestly say I’ve never had a duff gig in Ireland in the many years I’ve been coming over. It’s funny, kids have turned into blokes and now they’ll turn up with their grandkids on their shoulders – there’ll be three generations of family, which is fantastic.’

➔ SUMMER CAMP Who: Married musical couple Jeremy Warmsley (multi-instrumentalist) and singer Elizabeth Sankey who made warm waves with their 2011 debut, Welcome To Condale. Why: On their acclaimed debut, Summer Camp provided a melodic collection of shoegazey alt-pop with a vintage teen Americana vibe. A concept album of sorts, it was set in a fictional Californian town and peppered with retro samples from John Hughes’s movies and other 1980s classics. At Castlepalooza they’ll play tracks from last September’s well-received follow-up, the selftitled Summer Camp. The London-based Moshi Moshi signings, who initially tried to remain anonymous and claimed to be six Swedish teens (until their cover was blown), worked with producer Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur) on the new album – and those who have seen the pair before can expect a

tighter, dancier affair at Castlepalooza. Nevertheless, the duo’s leftfield retro kitsch elements are sure to remain present and correct. Sample lyrics: ‘I don’t want to meet your folks/ They like the other guy most/ I don’t care about your dreams/ I’d rip you apart at the seams.’

ANDREW WEATHERALL

Who: Best known either as the producer who married rock and dance most effectively with Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, or as a champion of the deepest twisted techno around. Why: Rather than being seduced by the big business that dance music has become, Weatherall has defiantly kept it real, steadfastly sticking to acid-house’s core principles of good music and the freedom to party. Indeed, he has rejected countless offers from major labels, and is easily talented enough to be bracketed alongside Sasha, Paul Oakenfold and Pete Tong. But, where those supposed superstar spinners are actually well past their sell-by-date, Weatherall is still a force to be reckoned with. Check out this year’s hypnotic Ruled By Passion Destroyed By Lust LP, a collaboration with Timothy J Fairplay. In his own words, from the Metro Life archives: ‘I was about 11 years old when I first got that tingle from music. There was a film called That’ll Be The Day which was set in the late 1950s. I remember the TV advert featured Teddy boys hanging out of a bumper car and the songs At The Hop and Runaway by Del Shannon were playing. I lived in the suburbs and all of a sudden there’s this ghostly music and guys in leopard skin jackets. You think: “Wow, what is this world?”’

GILLES PETERSON Who: DJ, producer and worldwide talent spotter, Peterson was a key DJ in Britain’s jazz dance scene of the 1980s, coining the term ‘acid jazz’. In 1990, he founded the ground-breaking Talkin’ Loud record label. Why: Over the past 35 years Peterson has been instrumental in numerous music scenes, connecting exclusive international sounds with mainstream audiences. Peterson’s CV stems from pirate radio through to co-founding seminal labels Acid Jazz and Talkin’ Loud. He’s probably best known for his Worldwide show on BBC Radio 1, its annual awards and summer festival, and for creating Brownswood Recordings, home to Mercury-nominated Ghostpoet and Peterson’s own Havana Cultura albums. In his own words, from the Metro Life archives: ‘There’s so much great music out there to discover: I’m a kid in a toyshop – I love being able to find a new record and go: “F***, that’s going to sound amazing at 4am”. Running a record label isn’t a clever thing to bring to your bank manager nowadays but there’s a responsibility to represent all the new music out there. And I’m still driven by curiosity; I like the idea of asking the questions as much as answering them.’

AnD AnOTHER THing… n As ever, Castlepalooza ticket-holders have exclusive daily access to Charleville Castle throughout the weekend where they can take in film screenings and art exhibitions, partake in sundry workshops (puppet-making or hula-hooping classes, anyone?) and, for clammy campers, enjoy a reviving spa treatment. n New features of this year’s Castlepal-

ooza include Homebeat, a showcase of emerging Irish talent taking place within Charleville Castle’s main room and SharkAshack, a new stage on which local DJs will showcase their wares.

n Boutique camping options at this year’s festival include pre-pitched bell tents with ‘carpeted interior’ that can house four to six smarmy glampers.

cuRiOus AbOuT… Lesser-known acts to take a punt on at this year’s Castlepalooza Dan Croll: Liverpool-based singer/ songwriter who, thanks to quirky lyrics given an on-trend Afrobeat backdrop, was invited on tour with Haim and has been endorsed by one Paul ul McCartney. On single Home he’s also come up with one of the finest couplets of the year: ‘If you ever er come round to my house, take your shoes offf at the door/ Cos it’s impolite not to, you’ll be damaging my floor.’ Onra: Parisian beatmaker and hiphop artist Onra travelled all the way to Asia in order to find obscure

Based on an allegedly true (although widely disputed) story, this 1996 offering is principally worth a look for its starry cast earning their crusts in a now almost completely forgotten courtroom drama. Robert De Niro stars as a basketball-playing priest who brings up four young boys who end up being sent to a brutal reform school. As adults, the quartet (including Jason Patric and Kevin Bacon) take revenge on their abusers. Dustin Hoffman plays a booze-loving lawyer.

delightful. I organised a World Cup pool with a group of friends, the majority of whom think a ‘football’ is something that rarely touches a foot. But instead of the usual jaded reactions one normally gets when a drawer doesn’t draw Spain, Brazil, Germany or Argentina, I have people picking teams like Algeria and Honduras and looking at me, wideeyed in adorable hope and wanting to know ‘if they’re any good?’ One girl I invited to take part in the pool kept asking increasingly perplexing questions – how long do games go on for? Does the tournament take place on one day? Does it clash with my work schedule? At some point I realised she thought her $10 was

I can’t believe it’s been 12 long years since I’ve been in a country that qualified for the tournament. But I’ve noticed a couple of differences from when Ireland were in Korea/ Japan in 2002. First of all, the US media did not get the memo about the ‘other sports’ moratorium. They don’t seem to realise that all other sports do not matter in June and July every four years. Football – or soccer as I have been forced to submit to calling it – has exploded in popularity over the past few years. I want to say it’s not because of the David Beckham effect, but it probably is. Indeed, I’ve been asked more than once why he isn’t playing for the US. (Doesn’t he play for Galaxy any more?). most shockingly of all, you would not believe the number of people who did not realise the World Cup was actually hosted here. I don’t just mean in the country, I mean the ’94 final was played in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, a 20-minute drive from where I type this. It’s like the World Cup final being hosted in Croke Park and your being totally oblivious to it. The naivety is in some ways quite

Dipping one’s pen in the office ink can be dangerous, what with internal politics and dangerous trysts in the stationery cupboard (those staples get everywhere, dammit). But the benefits to shagging the landlord are obvious and clear cut. Dear Lana, ‘I wish I was dead already,’ you said in an interview with The Guardian last week. Burnt by, and disillusioned with, fame you added: ‘I don’t want to have to keep doing this.’ But one person’s candour is another’s narcissism, and condemning the dark side of celebrity while promoting a new album, Ultraviolence, will do little to silence your critics. Confide not in journalists but in a therapist if you are genuinely miserable. There are plenty of great singer-songwriters out there – Prince, Thom Yorke, David Bowie, Kate Bush – that shirk the promotional merrygo-round. You could too. So, forget interviews and world tours, and become a faded starlet singing in dive bars like in one of your songs. But, somehow, methinks you protest too much…

logger Tess Master is a self-confessed ‘blendaholic’. If your blender is languishing at the back of a cupboard, her cookbook will have you dragging it out in no time. And she really does cover all things blended: smoothies and juices, yes, but also salads, main courses and desserts with a blended component. So there’s a wholesome version of Pad Thai where you blend the curry paste and

a potato pizza that is drizzled with a blended balsamic and rosemary dressing before you bake it. The Australian-born, los Angeles-based cook is a big fan of raw foods and her allergy-free, whole-food concoctions use natural flavours and sweeteners, are gluten-free and vegan. It’s the kind of book you feel healthier just flicking through and is loaded with recipes that sing ‘summer’. As Masters says: ‘Blend and live!’

gREEn QUEEn ingREDiEnTs serves 8 as a starter, 6 as a main

Dressing: makes 1½ cups (360ml) ¾ cup (180ml) cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil ♦ ¼ cup (60ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice, plus more to taste ♦ 1 bunch flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped ♦ 1 bunch coriander, chopped ♦ ½ bunch chopped chives ♦ ⅓ cup (40g) blanched raw almonds or ¼ cup (35g) raw sunflower seeds, soaked [place in a ceramic or glass dish, cover with boiling water and allow to soften for at least 10min] ♦ ½ avocado, pitted and peeled ♦ 1 clove garlic, minced, plus more to taste ♦ 1tsp apple cider vinegar ♦ ½tsp natural salt, plus more to taste ♦ ½ cup (120ml) water, plus more as needed Salad: 2 courgettes ♦ 8 cups (200g) mixed leafy greens, like baby spinach, rocket or micro greens ♦ ¼ head red cabbage, cored and shredded ♦ 2 cups (300g) julienned broccoli stalks or 2 cups (290g) peeled, seeded and diced or julienned cucumber ♦ 2 avocados, pitted, peeled, and sliced ♦ 1 bunch spring

onions (white and green parts), finely chopped ♦ 1 cup (160g) roughly chopped raw almonds ♦ ¼ cup (35g) hemp, sunflower or pumpkin seeds ♦ natural salt and freshly ground black pepper

METHOD step 1: To make the

dressing put all of the ingredients into your blender and purée on high for about 1min until smooth and creamy. Tweak flavours to taste (you might want more lemon juice, garlic or salt). This dressing should have the consistency of thin mayo but add a little more water to thin it out if you prefer. It can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days. step 2: To assemble, shave the courgettes into long strips with a vegetable peeler, discarding the seedy core. In a large serving bowl, toss together the courgettes, greens, cabbage, broccoli, avocados, onions, almonds, and seeds. Add dressing to your taste and toss well. Season and serve any remaining dressing at the table.

450g Roma or plum tomatoes ♦ 6 cloves garlic, unpeeled ♦ 4 sprigs thyme ♦ natural salt and freshly ground black pepper ♦ 2 cups (380g) dried green lentils ♦ 3 brown, white or red onions, sliced into 6mm rings ♦ Olive oil ♦ ¼ cup (60ml) balsamic vinegar ♦ 4 cups (640g) diced carrots ♦ 4 cups (540g) diced courgette ♦ ¼ cup (12g) finely chopped flat-leaf parsley ♦ 1½tbsp grainy Dijon mustard ♦ Freshly squeezed lemon juice ♦ 2tsp pure maple syrup, plus more to taste ♦ 1tsp Bragg liquid aminos [liquid protein concentrate, made from soybeans]

♦ ½tsp apple cider vinegar, plus more to taste ♦ ¼tsp dried chilli flakes, plus more to taste ♦ 10 cups (220g) loosely packed rocket leaves

METHOD

step 1: Preheat the oven to 235C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. step 2: Place the tomatoes, garlic and thyme sprigs on the prepared baking sheet. Season with ⅛tsp each of salt and pepper. Roast for approximately 30min until the tomato skins start to brown and the flesh is soft; it’s OK if they collapse. Set the tomatoes aside to cool, reserve the garlic, and discard the thyme sprigs.

step 3: In a pot over high heat, cover the lentils with 8 cups (1.9l) of water and season with ½tsp salt. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to medium and simmer for about 12min, until just al dente. Drain the lentils and allow them to cool. step 4: In a large frying pan over medium-high heat, toss the onions with 2tbsp of olive oil and ¼tsp each of salt and pepper. Sauté the onions for 8min. Add ⅛tsp of salt and stir; reduce the heat to medium and cook for about 15min more, stirring occasionally, until the onions start to caramelise

and have shrunk to half their size. Stir in the balsamic vinegar, reduce the heat to low and simmer until the onions have absorbed the balsamic – about 15min. Transfer the onion mixture to a bowl and set aside. step 5: In the same frying pan, heat 2tbsp of olive oil over medium heat. Add the carrots and sauté for 3 to 4min, until slightly tender. Add the courgette and increase the heat to medium-high. Add ⅛tsp of salt and continue cooking for 3 to 5min, until the vegetables are slightly browned but still al dente. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the parsley. step 6: To make the dressing, put ½ cup of olive oil into your blender. Squeeze the

about 20min until soft. In a sauté pan over high heat, bring the tamari and coconut sugar to a boil. Boil for about 1min, reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 2 to 3min until thickened slightly. Throw in the mushrooms, increase the heat to medium and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. cook for 15min, stirring often, until the mushrooms are nice and caramelised. remove the mushrooms from the pan and reserve the cooking liquid. It will only be a tablespoon or two. Drain the noodles completely and toss them with the reserved cooking liquid. Step 2: To assemble the rolls, fill a shallow dish half full with water and submerge one rice paper wrapper for 10 to 20secs, just long enough to soften. remove the wrapper from the water and place on a work surface. Place a lettuce leaf in the middle of the wrapper and top it with a forkful of noodles, 2 or 3 pieces of mushroom, 2 spring onion pieces, 4 sticks of carrot, 4 sticks of cucumber, 6 coriander leaves, 4 mint leaves, 2 basil leaves and 2 avocado slices. fold the half of the wrapper closest to you up and over the filling, then fold in the sides. carefully roll up the spring roll and set it on a dish, seam-side down. repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling. If not serving immediately, chill in the fridge, loosely covered, for up to 3 hours. Step 3: To make the dipping sauce, throw all of the ingredients into your blender and purée on high for about 1min until well combined. You may want to add an additional tablespoon or two of water to thin out the sauce. Serve alongside the rolls.

Power in the game

DefenDing champion Paul Casey spoke with relish yesterday of the drama that lies ahead at this week’s irish Open at fota island Resort, where three qualifying places for next month’s British Open will be up for grabs. englishman Casey, who won last year’s 72hole event by three strokes, said the combination of the irish fans’ enthusiasm and a chance to secure places at the British Open, to be played at Royal Liverpool, Hoylake, ensured great excitement. ‘i think it’s wonderful that players will have the opportunity to qualify at the irish Open,’ said Casey. ‘i have always loved playing in ireland – and the support from the irish fans when i won last year was phenomenal. ‘The fact that three places in The Open are on the line at this year’s tournament will create even more excitement for the spectators and the players.’ The irish Open is part of a new Open Qualifying Series, and the top three finishers from a 156-strong international field, from 23 nations, earn places at Hoylake.

champion Michael Schumacher is to continue his rehabilitation in Switzerland having emerged from a coma after almost six months. The 45-year-old has left the hospital in Grenoble where he was put into an artificially-induced coma following a skiing accident in the French Alps in late December. Schumacher has been transferred close to home to the University Hospital of Lausanne where he will continue his recovery from the serious head injuries he received while on the slopes in the French alpine resort of Meribel.

‘The support from Irish fans last year was phenomenal’ ‘The Open Championship is what we all aspire to as kids growing up,’ added Casey, who has already qualified. ‘As players, we know how much it would mean to win such an historic Championship. ‘There are so many great names on the Claret jug and to follow them would be fantastic.’ Meanwhile as they flew back to europe after the thrills and spills of Pinehurst, many of the leading contenders were already turning their attention to one of the top events on The european Tour international Schedule. Although they didn’t figure in the shake-up, which carried Martin Kaymer to his second Major title, northern ireland’s Rory Mcilroy and graeme McDowell couldn’t resist sneaking a look forward to this week’s action. Mcilroy, who closed with a 73 for a tie for 23rd place three years after his Kaymer-esque performance in Washington, said: ‘i don’t know fota at all and i’ve never been to Cork, unbelievably. it’s going to be good. irish Opens are always great events – they are always so well supported and so well attended, so i’m looking forward to it. ‘i’ve heard great things about the course, so i’m really looking forward to getting down there and seeing it for myself. i vaguely remember watching the irish Open on TV when it was

McDowell added: ‘The irish Open is always special to us as irish players. fota island was my irish Open debut and it’s got good memories, good thoughts, a great venue. everyone is going to be very excited and very

The crowds are always very good in ireland and they appreciate good golf.’

Tiger hitting full shots as return at Hoylake is hoped

Woods: Making progress

FORMER world number one Tiger Woods has moved closer to a return to competitive golf by hitting full shots in practice. Woods missed the year’s first two major championships after undergoing back surgery on March 31 and he has not played since the WGC-Cadillac Championship earlier that month. Speaking on May 19, the 38-year-

old had said his recovery was ‘slow and tedious’ adding: ‘As of right now I can chip and putt, but that’s it.’ But in response to a report that he had stepped up his practice regime, the 14-time major winner’s agent Mark Steinberg told the PGA Tour’s website: ‘Tiger is making continual progress.

‘He feels better each day and (is able to) extend his swing as he moves forward.’ The news increases the possibility that Woods could be back in action in time for the Open Championship which takes place from July 17 to 20 at Hoylake, near Liverpool, in the UK, where he won the last of his three Open titles in 2006.

UnITED States coach Jürgen Klinsmann has warned his team to expect a Portugal backlash when the Group G rivals meet on Sunday. The USA enjoyed a dramatic 2-1 win over Ghana on Monday, but Klinsmann believes Portugal’s 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Germany could jolt them into action. ‘now they are going to come into Manaus pretty angry and I don’t know how [Cristiano] Ronaldo is going to perform when he is angry,’ Klinsmann said.

ivorians look for heir of the Drog DIDIER DROGBA will not be rushed back to start for Ivory Coast against Colombia tomorrow, insists coach Sabri Lamouchi. The 36-year-old transformed his side’s fortunes in their Group C win over Japan when he came off the bench. ‘I know there are a lot of lovers of Drogba’s style,’ said Lamouchi, who needs a long-term replacement for the Ivorian legend. ‘But the last time he played 90 minutes was a few months ago in Turkey. He’s just recovered from injury.’

Meanwhile, USA matchwinner John Brooks says he knew he was going to get the winner against Ghana – after dreaming the result two nights earlier. The centre-half, who came on as a substitute, headed in the late winner just minutes after the Black Stars had equalised. ‘I told some team-mates I dreamed that I scored in the 80th minute and we won the game,’ he said. ‘And it was the 86th minute and we won.’

Jose’s surprise support after Casillas calamity by JOHN PAYNE

SPAIN goalkeeper Iker Casillas has received unexpected support from Jose Mourinho ahead of tonight’s crunch clash with Chile. The Chelsea manager insists Spain boss Vincent del Bosque should not make a scapegoat of his World Cupwinning captain, despite Casillas’ disastrous performance in last Friday’s 5-1 defeat to Holland. Mourinho’s words, in the wake of Spain’s worst drubbing in the tournament for more than 60 years, are sur-

Hosts are thwarted as Mexico stand firm

BRAZIL’S World Cup favourites tag continued to look dubious as they toiled to the tournament’s second stalemate against Mexico. The hosts had not convinced in their opening win over Croatia, and facing a well-organised Mexico, who were inspired by a man-of-the-match display from goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, again were over-reliant on the creative input of Neymar and marauding full-back Dani Alves, both sporting new blonde barnets. Another goosebump-inducing rendition of the Brazilian anthem had Neymar in tears before kick-off. But Brazil rarely rewarded their rousing support inside the Estadio Castelao with the sexy football they craved as Mexico, heroically marshalled by Hector Moreno, held firm. Neymar, though, almost directed an Alves cross into the corner only for

Ochoa to launch himself – Gordon Banks style – and brilliantly claw away the downward header. Ochoa again rescued his team before the break by blocking a Paulinho poke. Despite looking dangerous on the break, Mexico were limited to longrange efforts, with Hector Herrera

Ochoa pulled out two more senstional stops – from Neymar again and then a point-blank Thiago Silva header before a correctly-waved-away Marcelo penalty claim signalled the end of Brazil’s attempts to win. However, despite their indifferent display, last-16 qualification will likely be sealed against Cameroon.

kaymer’s surge not a surprise for McGinley by MARk DARcy

EuropEan ryder Cup captain paul McGinley had a sense uS open champion Martin Kaymer was on the verge of producing something special and believes the ‘low maintenance’ German will make an ideal team member at Gleneagles. Kaymer won his second major title with a dominant display at pinehurst last week, setting or equalling numerous records on his way to a commanding eight-shot victory.

‘He’s very insightful about himself’ It was the 29-year-old’s second wireto-wire win in the space of six weeks after his triumph in the players Championship, where McGinley was impressed by the former world number one’s reaction to the hard-fought success. McGinley, who had dinner with Kaymer late on the Sunday evening at Sawgrass, said yesterday: ‘It was nice to hear the debrief, but it was also very insightful for me. ‘It was very clear from what he was saying to me and what he was saying to his caddie that this wasn’t a rejoicing, shouting from the rooftops, we

are back on the top of the summit again. It’s a start. ‘and it’s no surprise he’s followed it up six weeks later to win a major. He was very clear this was the start of a surge and he’s been proved right.’ Kaymer admitted on Sunday that he struggled to cope with the extra attention brought on by his first major title in the uS pGa Championship in 2010, which led to an eight-week spell as world number one. He also said he would not have picked himself as a wild card for the 2012 ryder Cup team after a loss of form, but having secured the final qualifying place he had little choice and ended up holing the putt which ensured Europe retained the trophy after the ‘Miracle at Medinah’. ‘He’s a very interesting guy,’ added McGinley, who was speaking ahead of this week’s Irish open at Fota Island. ‘He gives a lot away about himself when he gives a press conference, he’s very insightful about himself and he’s very honest. ‘He’s a popular guy. He minds his own business and does his own thing but he’s a loyal member of the team. and he’s an easy guy to pair. He’s not high maintenance. He doesn’t need to play with one player or another. ‘He’s kind of happy to be guided, whatever the captain says.’

Rooney hits back at media over training regime WAYNE Rooney has criticised sections of the media who questioned his form and speculated that the England forward had been relegated to training with the reserves at their base in Brazil. The Manchester United striker came in for criticism following a muted performance in their opening 2-1 defeat by Italy in

Group D on Saturday, with the Daily Mirror reporting he was battling ‘to save his World Cup’. Rooney, who was used in a lessfavoured left-sided role against Italy, was the only outfield player who started that match to do a full training session on Monday. ‘Sometimes wonder what the press are getting at,’ Rooney said on Facebook.

‘I said from the start I want to do everything I can to make sure I’m ready for these World Cup games and as part of that I was doing extra training a week before the squad joined up. ‘That’s what I did yesterday, my own extra training because that’s what I wanted to do.’ For a player who has enjoyed a glittering club career, Rooney’s

international form has frequently been questioned, especially around major tournaments, where he has struggled to make an impact. England vice captain Frank Lampard urged the country’s media to drop their ‘fixation’ with the striker, saying: ‘To focus on individuals again and again, it can become a bit detrimental.’
