Coppers hunt jail chopper droppers A DIGITAL memory card could catch the gang that tried to use an unmanned mini-helicopter to drop drugs into a high-security prison. The package was attached by a rope to the four-bladed drone as it hovered over the exercise yard, waiting for inmates to detach it, but the craft crash-landed after becoming caught in wires designed to prevent prisoners escaping by helicopter. A memory card on board the €2,000 quadcopter recorded the exact route it took before it crashed into the yard in Wheatfield Prison in west Dublin on Tuesday at about 11am. Prison staff were alerted when the device crashed and up to 20 inmates huddled around one man – the suspected ringleader, who is serving an eightyear sentence for robbery – as he hid the drugs package inside himself.
Teen posed as girl to blackmail boys for sex
by Brian huTTon The inmate has been put in solitary confinement under 24-hour watch until the contraband is retrieved. The drone has been handed over to gardaí who are carrying out their own investigation. It is believed the smugglers had carried out a trial run before the failed attempt. ‘They definitely had done their homework on this,’ said a prison source. ‘This isn’t a toy. It was a high-spec drone with a high-spec camera through which the operators could monitor the route it was taking.’ The Irish Prison Service confirmed an incident had occurred. ‘It shows you the lengths people will go to get contraband into prisons but this has backfired on them,’ a source said.

Guilty plea: Fake profiles A YOUNG man posed as a teenage girl on Facebook in order to sexually exploit boys. The man, who was 19 at the time, convinced three boys aged between 13 and 14, to send him sexually explicit pictures of themselves and to perform sex acts via web cam. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard two profiles were set up by the man as those of a 14-year-old girl and a 14-yearold bisexual boy. The man set up the false accounts in March 2012 and sent friend requests to males aged around 13 and 14. Around 350 boys accepted. Posing as a bisexual teenage boy, the man began exchanging sexually explicit messages with a 14-year-old boy. When the victim suggested he would be willing to sexually engage with a 20-year-old, the man contacted him using his real identity and said he was aged 17. They met twice and engaged in sexual acts. The Dublin man pleaded guilty to three charges of exploitation of a child and two counts of defilement of a child between April and October 2012. Judge Mary Ellen Ring remanded the man in custody and he will be sentenced later.

Saved for posterior-ity... Famous Athena tennis dress is up for, er, grabs by AiDAn RADnEDgE IT once hung in nearly every student bedroom in the country next to che Guevara and Bob Marley. now the dress from one of the world’s most famous posters is up for auction – appropriately on Wimbledon ladies’ finals day. The little white number in the Athena tennis picture has been tucked away for decades in a cupboard by its designer. carol Knotts, now a barrister, said: ‘I used to get a monthly allowance from my parents and made clothes to make it stretch. ‘I bought a Simplicity pattern and made the dress, complete with lace trim. It’s a little piece of tennis history and I hope someone might find it an interesting novelty item to buy.’ The cheeky shot by photographer Martin elliot was taken on a court in Birmingham in 1976 and went on to sell 2million copies. The identity of its teenage star remained a secret until 2011 when she was named as Fiona Walker. She is now 55 and living in Worcestershire. Her racy pose has been imitated over the years by the likes of Kylie Minogue, Frank Skinner, Ricky Gervais and Amanda Holden. The dress will be auctioned on July 5.

Minister in favour of boardwalk bike lane TRANSPORT Minister Leo Varadkar has said he favours a ‘boardwalk-type option’ for cyclists on Dublin’s north quays, rather than a controversial proposal to turn one traffic lane into a dedicated cycle lane. Speaking on The Pat Kenny Show on Newstalk, Mr Varadkar said cycling facilities need to be improved, but removing a traffic lane would not be practical for those commuting long distances. He said: ‘We need to remember it’s the capital city – it doesn’t just belong to people in Dublin, it belongs to people commuting from Kells or Navan or other places too.’

Father who punched HIV clinic worker spared prison
A MAN who punched a hospital employee at an infectious diseases clinic because he wasn’t being seen quickly enough has avoided going to prison. Father-of-one Martin Casey, 22, admitted assaulting Arun Vijayakumar causing him harm at the Mater Hospital on October 15, 2012. Casey, of Cnoc An Dubh, Cloonfad, Roscommon was given a one-year suspended sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Judge Mary Ellen Ring also ordered he pay €500 to Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin within 12 months. The court heard Casey arrived at the Infectious Diseases Unit in a ‘hysterical state’ to get blood tests. He had been at a party the previous night and helped someone with a glass injury, but was told later that the person suffered from HIV. Casey attended the Mater Hospital clinic
by jEssIcA MAgEE
but ‘lost the plot’ with a staff member after he felt he was waiting too long to be seen. After waiting about 15 minutes from arrival, Casey approached Mr Vijayakumar in an anxious state asking how long it would be until he was seen. He became aggressive and abusive and accused Mr Vijayakumar of not doing his job properly and ‘just sitting on his ass’. Mr Vijayakumar tried to get Casey to calm down and asked him to have a seat, but Casey yelled at him, then punched him twice in the face. Anne-Marie Lawlor BL, defending, said Casey made full admissions on arrest and was ‘remorseful and utterly ashamed’. On seeing CCTV footage of the incident, Casey, upset at his ‘stupid and pointless’ action, said ‘Yer man didn’t deserve it’.

Lack of city housing drives prices up at ‘boom rates’ by bRiAn HuTTOn
House prices are rising at the quickest rate since the peak of the property boom seven years ago, official figures show. Breaching the double-digit barrier, a more than ten per cent jump in residential property prices in the last year has sparked calls for more homes to be built – particularly in Dublin. Lack of suitable housing in the capital, where prices have soared more than a fifth (22.4 per cent) over the last year and 4.4 per cent in the last month alone, has been blamed for driving up national prices. The latest Central statistics office (Cso) report reveals the average cost of buying a home nationwide rose 10.6 per cent since May last year. It is the first time since the crash that house prices have been rising at double-digit levels. observers have noted cash-buying investors still make up around half of all property purchases, rather than people seeking a home who have been able to get a mortgage. Concerns have also been raised about first-time buyers over-stretching themselves financially to get on the property ladder, with the possibility of interestrate rises in the future.

Services resume as air traffic strike ‘off’ AIR services across Europe are getting back to normal today after the two-day French air traffic controllers’ strike, due to continue until the weekend, was called off at midnight. Hundreds of Irish passengers were left stranded, while others experienced delays of up to six hours in recent days due to the planned industrial action over cuts. Ryanair had to cancel hundreds of flights and Aer Lingus operated with significant delays. This comes as Belgium’s air traffic controllers joined the industrial action yesterday in a two-hour stoppage.
Bank guarantee talks ‘off limits’ for inquiry THE Cabinet meeting which resulted in the bank guarantee has been ruled off limits for the Banking Inquiry Committee. However, members can access to papers used by the previous government to reach its decision. A budget of €5.3million has been proposed for the inquiry, which is due to report at the end of 2015. Committee member Michael McGrath described the excluded cabinet meeting as ‘a setback’. He said a Leveson-style public inquiry, which Fianna Fáil has pushed for, would have avoided this.

Minister hits back over HSE budget shortfall HEALTH Minister James Reilly has hit out at Fianna Fáil after telling the Dáil yesterday that the Health Service Executive (HSE) had recorded a €158million deficit. The Minister described 2014 as a challenging year and said the HSE was still providing services despite the challenges, citing a €3.3billion cut in the health budget since 2008 and staff reductions. However, Mr Reilly (pictured) retaliated when Fianna Fáil health spokesman Billy Kelleher accused the Government of ‘grasping around, trying to pretend you have the money to run the health services for the year ahead’. The minister responded saying Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin had set up the HSE and if its problems were all about money ‘when you were rolling in it, you would have been able to fix it’.
Korea move: In The Interview, Seth Rogen, ogen, left, and James Franco are hired by the CIA to assassinate North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un PICTURE: ED ARAQUEL
Hollywood’s ‘act of terror’ over Jong-un murder plot A MOVIE plot which sees two rookie secret agents attempt to assassinate a world leader is pretty standard stuff. But when it emerges the leader is none other than North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, film-makers should have realised they were playing with fire. The dictator’s reaction to his fictitious termination has been explosive and the People’s Republic has threatened to take ‘merciless counter measures’ on the US unless the comedy is canned.
by JOHN MIcHAELs
Upcoming flick The Interview, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, was denounced as ‘an act of terrorism’ by the government in Pyongyang. An official told state media: ‘Making and releasing a movie on a plot to hurt our top-level leadership is the most blatant act of war and will not be tolerated.’ North Korean television has denounced it as ‘reckless US provoca-
tive insanity’ by a ‘gangster filmmaker’ which has whipped up a ‘gust of hatred and rage’ across the country. North Korean movie fans face disappointment if they want to see The Interview. But, thankfully, they can settle down for a state-approved blockbuster instead. Welcome To Pyongyang Animal Park is a firm favourite along with The Respected Comrade Supreme Commander Is Our Destiny, a 2001 classic. All aspects of life in North Korea
are state controlled, which may be why the regime blames the US government for Hollywood’s output and not the producers of the film. But the Dear Leader is by no means averse to US culture. He has been spotted enjoying a Disney dance show – as well music from Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky films. The Interview was originally about Kim Jong-il, but the script was revised when he died in 2011 and his son took over.

love people. Just random, World Cup people. On the box. The great and the grisly, the gorgeous and gaptoothed, the hairless and hirsute – they come in all shapes and sizes. And thank God they do, they’re a welcome cure for the mannequins of telly-land. They’re just as beautiful too – and even better, they’re real. Real people on TV – what a rarity. Though they do get as giddy as X Factor wannabes when the crowd-camera puts them on the big screen. Even the most dejected fan will light up and jostle his buddies and point off shot, until they do the same frantic wave at the precise moment the camera cuts away. That camera should be behind the big screen, or tight to it. Then people could look into the lens (and into our living rooms), but more importantly, they’d see themselves. This is the eternal problem for big screens, CCTV, and even Skype. We want to look ourselves in the eye, thank you very much, this is age of the ‘selfie’. And yet, for all the narcissism of social media, it’s touching that our reflex to being on TV is still the innocent, gushing ‘Hi Mum!’

Sometimes crowds are nasty (see: banana-throwing) and they are always, always fickle and ready to forget anything, once entertained. This World Cup, and its GMT-friendly kick-off times, has been a stunning success so far, which helps us ignore the whole Qatar debacle, and the projected 4,000 labourer lives the stadiums will cost. How many people died in the Colosseum? The internet says… 500,000!?! Holy...Jesus, that’s a lot! Then again it was open for 450 years, which is about 1,100 a year, so Qatar isn’t too far off the pace. The question is do they have enough oil money to bribe Fifa into letting them host the next 112 World Cups? Either way, that cruel Colosseum spirit is still with us and ironically you see it most at goal time. All that rapture and ecstasy – it’s a bit frenzied and bloodthirsty. Rabid, even. And it gets to people. It got to Luis Suarez – and that got the whole world talking. So in order to boost ratings, the organisers of Wimbledon have arranged for Princess Anne to bite the head off a pigeon. The end.

Cameron hacking apology backfires by AIDAN RADNEDgE

D
DAVID CAMERON was attacked by a senior judge, a hacking victim and his own MPs yesterday – as pressure over the Andy Coulson scandal grew. The British prime minister is facing scrutiny over whether he dodged government vetting rules to employ the disgraced ex-editor as his spin doctor. Meanwhile, the hacking trial judge condemned him for nearly collapsing the case altogether, after eight months. Then Gemma Dowler, sister of murdered schoolgirl Milly, recorded an emotional appeal for Mr Cameron (pictured) – urging him not to desert press reform. When Mr Cameron apologised for hir-
ing Coulson two days ago, the jury was still deliberating two outstanding charges against the shamed journalist. But Mr Cameron’s intervention caused lawyers to demand that both of the allegations were thrown out. Mr Justice Saunders stressed there was a danger to cases ‘when politicians regard it as open season’. Downing Street said legal advice had been taken from the attorney-general before the apology. Jurors were unable to agree whether Coulson should also be found guilty of bribing royal police officers.

‘Mercy killing’ doctor Princess facing trial freed as row rages on over spouse’s ‘fraud’ FRANCE: A doctor accused of giving seven terminally ill patients lethal injections has been acquitted. Nicolas Bonnemaison allegedly performed mercy killings in Bayonne in 2010. His trial has led to calls to legalise euthanasia. The verdict came hours after France’s top court granted Vincent Lambert, who is in a vegetative state, the right to die – a decision later overruled by the European Court of Human Rights.
SPAIN: Princess Cristina, sister of newly proclaimed King Felipe VI, was yesterday charged with tax evasion and money laundering. The 49-year-old could now end up in the dock with her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, over their links to a €6million fraud case. It is alleged their charitable foundation overcharged regional governments for organising sporting events and stashed the money in tax havens.

Maliki shuns ‘unity’ plan to rule Iraq by NIcOLE LE MARIE IRAQ’S prime minister Nouri al-Maliki yesterday rejected calls for a unity government to deal with the threat of Islamic insurgents. Mr Maliki said the idea to combat Isis would go against the results of parliamentary elections in April and instead issued a vague call for ‘all political forces to reconcile’. The US said it was likely Syria had launched airstrikes into western Iraq on Tuesday to slow the militants who are also fighting Syrian president Bashar alAssad’s regime. The White House warned that the intervention of the Assad regime would add to the crisis. Speaking to Nato diplomats, US secretary of state John Kerry said: ‘We’ve made it clear to everyone in the region that we don’t need anything to take place that might exacerbate sectarian divisions
that are already at a heightened level of tension. ‘It’s already important that nothing take place that contributes to the extremism or could act as a flashpoint with respect to the Call: Mr Maliki sectarian divide.’ Mr Kerry said Baghdad needed to take steps to ensure that Iraq’s military can defend the country without relying on outside forces. Yesterday, Sunni militants were pushed back from a major oil refinery, Iraqi Col Ali al-Quraishi said. A suicide bomber killed 13 people and wounded 25 at an outdoor market south of Baghdad. making a statement about freedom rather than covering up for cosmetic reasons. The Nothing Really Matters singer has been uploading images for weeks with the hashtag #unapologeticb**** with many speculating it could be the name of her upcoming 13th studio album.

Paolo gives teenagers Nutini but bad advice on drugs
I
was reading Paolo Nutini’s comments in Guilty Pleasures recently, where he defended the use of marijuana. He also acknowledged that if you ‘give it to the wrong person, marijuana can spawn all kinds of things’. Most teenagers won’t know they may carry the gene by which marijuana could trigger psychotic illnesses, such as bipolar disease. These are lifelong illnesses and, if triggered by marijuana, there is no way back. approximately 2.5 per cent of the world’s population suffers from bipolar disease and it affects every aspect of the sufferer’s life, and that of their families. Please educate your children about the danger of experimenting with marijuana. Concerned Dublin Parent

What’s in your summer make-up bag? Choosing products to take on holidays is equally as daunting as packing your entire wardrobe. If you are passing through the duty free or fancy a treat to take away with you, there are some amazing products you need to know about. I’m currently in love with Lancôme Grandiôse mascara which has a curved stem to give you intense colour on your lashes, as well as that much loved ‘flick’ (pictured, €30, at Lancôme counters from July 30). To match your fabulous lashes, try Yves Saint Laurent Couture Palette (No.2 is my favourite) to create a natural smoky eye and top that off with a spray of Georgio Armani Sì eau de parfum which just smells of summertime (€85 for 50ml / €110 for 100ml from late August).
All about the boys
The shoe decision cision
When the weather is warm, our choice of footwear is always a tough one. Our feet hurt in heels, they can swell in the heat of tight flats and blister plasters need to be carried at all times. Thankfully, Clarks are solving some of these dilemmas with their summer shoe offering. My pick are these cream brogues with cut out detail, to let your feet breathe whilst keeping them looking chic. The neutral colour matches everything and I can testify that they are incredibly comfortable too! Available at Clarks. www.clarks.ie
Last week was all about the boys at London Collections, Menswear and now Milan, as Menswear Fashion Week is underway. Brands like Hackett (pictured) have showcased what we can expect for the boys in spring/summer 2015, with relaxed but classic tailoring in a bright palette of offwhite and cream. While at DKNY, the urban vibe takes over against a New York skyline focusing on casual separates and colourful outerwear. Even though we have a year or so to wait, it will be worth it. Now if Hackett would just make those cr cream tailored trousers for the ladies…

First up is probably my favourite shower gel of all time. lush Flying Fox, €6.95, is packed with several aphrodisiac essential oils to calm the body and mind and create a feeling of sensual relaxation – oo-er! Hungarian honey moisturises the skin and jasmine helps to soothe muscular complaints and other stressrelated conditions. A very close second in my list of all-time favourites is Trilogy’s Botanical Body Wash. Often referred to among beauty editors as a cult classic, this gentle, nondrying gel is ideal for sensitive skin and boasts an addictive scent that promotes a feeling of calm and relaxation. €19.95 for 500ml, from selected pharmacies and health stores. MAC’s latest collection is called Alluring Aquatic – an appropriate name, given how lovely a hop in the pool sounded in the midst of the recent heatwave. We tried Bronze Crystal Lipglass from the range (a shade dark darker than nude with a RRP of €20.50). While our foundation ran and eye shadow founda creased in the heat, this stayed crea in pl place, retaining its soft, kissable shine ev even through drinks and dinner without the dr need for much re-application.
NAILING IT
Sally Hansen Salon Manicure in Bleach Babe (pictured, €8.95) is a nifty colour – a true white with a little shimmer, it’s a hit for those who love white-out nails. It spreads easily, with a wide brush, whit and tw two coats are more than enough. It has excellent lasting power too – we had ours on for ex three days before noticing any chipping.
LINER CRUISE
We’re big fans of liquid liner, so we were only too happy to trial two of NYX’s contributions to the arena. The Felt-tip Liner is better for flicks than a full dramatic cat-eye – we found the tip a little hard, and the liquid didn’t flow well on first use, leading to a second ond application, and a little smudging. The tip softened ned with use however, and the flow improved – and it’s ’s a decent price at €10.99. The Curve Liner (pictured, ed, €15.99) promises ergonomics and effortless tless instant lines, and boy does it deliver. Containing a thick,, gel-like ink, the curved bottle design fits neatly into the hand and allows for steady, even lines, that dry quickly and seem relatively smudge-proof. It also claims to be water-resistant, though wee never did get to jump in that pool. @OrnaCunningham unningham

hanks to their starry partnerships, h&M and Topshop are probably the first names that spring to mind when you think of designer collaborations. But, as fans of J Crew will attest, the Us retailer has been working with cool, interesting labels for years. ‘so many people splash about the people they’ve worked with but we’ve tried to go in the opposite direction and quietly team up with brands we really believe in,’ says J Crew’s ever-stylish president and creative director, Jenna Lyons. Rather than offering high-end pieces at high-street prices, J Crew’s collaborations, which fall under its In Good Company branch, are an edited selection of fullpriced pieces from brands you should know that offer something J Crew doesn’t. a 13-piece capsule collection. It features many of Webster’s signature shapes but with prints and colours from J Crew’s women’s collection. Once the right-hand woman for footwear designer nicholas kirkwood, Webster has been a name on the lips of many fashion watchers since she branched out on her own – thanks to the kaleidoscopic colours, bright patterns and catchy slogans that have become her trademark. It’s only relatively recently she’s become known outside fashion circles thanks, in part, to a celebrity following by the likes of Rihanna and solange knowles. For many, the partnership with J Crew will be their first encounter with Webster, so it was important it was a true reflection of her style. ‘Jenna approached me pretty early on in my career,’ says Webster. ‘I was flattered but I wanted to make sure the collection had my signature. That turned out to be easy because our brands have so many

similarities. There’s a love of colour and print and mixing unexpected things together. The fact we used a lot of my classic shapes kept my signature. They wanted the shoes to be very “me”, so there were no restrictions.’ When J Crew decided to expand into London, Lyons says the plan was always to work with a British designer. ‘We wanted someone young but we also love being able to share the designer’s story with the world and introduce something unique to customers,’ she says. ‘There’s so much ubiquity today – everywhere you go, you find so much visual information, whether through blogs or Instagram. What sophia does is different to anything else out there.’ Lyons discovered Webster by chance. she’d travelled to La for an event and decided she’d made ‘some really poor shoe choices’ when packing so went shopping. Webster’s heels were a fraction of the cost of other luxury footwear designers, Lyons bought a pair and hasn’t looked back. ‘The details were so beautiful,’ she says. ‘I ended up wearing them all night without cursing her name because they were just so comfortable. Those shoes ended up in heavy rotation, so I remembered her.’ not surprisingly, Lyons is inundated with proposals from brands but choosing who to work with isn’t as difficult as it sounds. ‘It’s not that different to how I shop,’ she says. ‘It’s all about that moment when you see something that stands out. I really care about it. I don’t want to just make a bunch of clothes and stick them on a rack – that’s not fun. It’s so nice to be able to share and work with other people.’
Sophia Webster for J Crew is online at www.jcrew.com and www.net-a-porter.com now, with prices ranging from €299 to €670.

Factual stacey dooley: the truth about domestic violence
a secret buried: the mother and baby scandal TV3, 9PM
BBC3, 9pm
When the story, based on research by historian Catherine Corless into a mass grave in Tuam, Co Galway, containing the bodies of up to 800 babies and children, broke last month, it made headlines around the world. As the shock continues to resonate, this exclusive programme delves into the scale of the scandal. Former residents of other mother and baby homes around the country and their relatives give first-hand accounts of cruelty, abuse and neglect, with tens of thousands of unmarried mothers hidden away from the judgement of Irish society at the time.
Following on from Monday’s excellent drama Murdered By My Boyfriend, reporter Stacey Dooley visits a women’s refuge to hear first-hand accounts of how abusive relationships have isolated the victims, who often feel they have nowhere to turn. The message is clear: not enough is being done to tackle a problem that’s a blight on society.

a novel about a suicidal sister doesn’t sound a barrel of laughs but this excellent book tells a desperate story with a dazzling lightness of touch. There’s not a drop of mawkish sentimentality as yoli does everything to persuade piano prodigy Elf to keep living while doing battle with the mordant comedy of everyday life, from a divorcing husband to the labyrinthian bureaucracy of the Us health system. Very smart, very funny and completely heartbreaking. CA Faber, out now
hmm, long title… Particularly for such
a short book. You could argue there is a similar imbalance between what the title promises and what the book delivers.
What’s the deal? It’s a series of conversations between Thomas, an unhinged 34-year-old loner, and the six people he has tied up in a disused military base. He has questions for all of them, from the former Congressman who he wants to explain why the US has spent $150million on air conditioning units in Iraq instead of on college places for all, to the former highschool teacher he accuses of having interfered with him during a maths sleepover. The film script format reinforces the primacy of Thomas’s voice, the point being that this is the first time in his life this dangerously disturbed young man feels he has a platform and an audience. But it also has the effect of banging home Eggers’s themes with the subtlety of a B2 bomber. it sounds rather exciting… It is, to begin
with. Thomas is initially a slippery protagonist and potentially capable of hairtrigger violence. Yet the set-up soon feels absurd. You start to wonder just how Thomas has managed to chloroform all these people and get them to the base without anyone noticing. Eggers’s main concern is America’s post-imperial decline and the extent to which Thomas is entirely alienated from quintessential American ideals such as personal responsibility and self-reliance. His psychotic response to a world in which he
feels he has no place certainly rings true in light of a growing generation of angry, dispossessed fanatics. But the more apparent it is that Thomas is a deluded fantasist, the more the ambiguity drains from his character, and the less tense the novel becomes.
A shame. i thought eggers was supposed to be quite good. From his fabulously
knowing memoir, A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius, to 2013’s digital satire, The Circle, Eggers – who co-founded hip literary publishers McSweeney’s – has been one of America’s most creatively restless
and socially reactive novelists. But he does have an irksome tendency to let a moral agenda creep into his work. Books such as Zeitoun, about Hurricane Katrina, sometimes feel like the smug literary equivalent of a vitamin shake – to be read because they are good for you.
Final verdict? Your Fathers… thinks it’s an important book with important questions that need to be asked but really it’s just a skinny, glib little thriller. Two out of five stars. Claire Allfree Hamish Hamilton, out now

‘Suarez needs psychiatric help to deal with his issues’ SPORTS pundit Eamon Dunphy has hit out at media reaction to the incident involving Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez during the side’s win over Italy on Tuesday in the World Cup. Describing the ‘mad headlines’ demanding vengeance to allegations Suarez bit defender Giorgio Chiellini in the second half of the Group D game, as ‘deplorable’, the former footballer said the Liverpool player needs ‘psychiatric help’ to overcome the
issues that have led to a third biting incident in his career. The RTÉ commentator said he believes a one or two-year suspension from international
‘I’d take a shoulder bite over a broken leg’ football is too ‘draconian’, but agreed that Suarez shouldn’t play again in the World Cup. ‘He is a great player, he is 27, to
take a year or two of his career now would probably destroy it and it wouldn’t be right. We have to get a sense of proportion and perspective on this. ‘There are guys breaking legs in football. In other sports like rugby there is gouging and all kinds of wicked assaults. People get away with them. This is unprecedented and he has crossed the line.’ ‘It’s self-destructive in a way. If someone had said to me, do you want your leg broken or badly-
damaged, or a bite on the shoulder, I’d take the bite on the shoulder.’ Dunphy said while the incident is shocking initially, there is a need to be ‘adult about it’ and think about the game and also ‘a very, very gifted player.’ He added: ‘I feel sorry for him and Chiellini. It was shocking to see but I always think you shouldn’t make judgements in the heat of shock. You just need to be calm and work out what the objective is here.’
