Predator: Savile had free rein
PREDATOR DJ Jimmy Savile carried out sex attacks on dozens of hospital patients and even violated the dead, an investigation revealed yesterday. The former Top Of The Pops pres enter was given free rein to abuse chil dren as young as five and boasted about performing sex acts on corpses. He also claimed chunky jewellery he wore was made from glass eyeballs seized from bodies in a mortuary. Savile, who died in 2011, was bran ded an ‘opportunistic sexual predator’

who used his celebrity status and charity fundraising efforts to ‘exploit and abuse’ patients and staff. Many health officials were aware of concerns about his behaviour but turned a blind eye for decades, the official UK National Health Service investigation found.
The report covers 28 hospitals, in cluding Leeds General Infirmary, where he volunteered as a porter from 1962. Sixty people say he abused them at that hospital. His victims there were aged from five to 75 and offences ranged from lewd remarks to sexual assault to three allegations of rape.
Some of his victims were starstruck, while others feared they would lose their jobs or Savile would be protected by powerful friends, the report said. Dr Sue Proctor, who led the LGI investigation, said: ‘The allegations about his behaviour in the mortuary are incredibly harrowing and disturbing.’ Savile was also involved in fundrais ing for the Central Remedial Clinic in Dublin. Yesterday it issued a state ment saying it was never aware of any allegations concerning Savile but urged anyone with any such informa tion to come forward.

Travel guide to Westeros
Thrones fan tours world to visit the TV scenes by AiDAn RADnEDgE
FOR some Game Of Thrones fans, it’s just not enough to enjoy their favourite TV show from the comfort of their sofa. Some want to get closer to where the action takes place and enjoy an adventure of their own. And that’s exactly what Yvonne Gordon did when she put down the remote control and visited spectacular locations where the US fantasy drama is filmed. She came up with the idea while planning a visit to Dubrovnik, in Croatia, last summer. She saw that parts of Game Of Thrones – including the Battle of Blackwater Bay – were shot there and became hooked. Also on the travel writer’s itinerary was Northern Ireland, where Storm’s End and the Iron Islands are set. ‘It’s difficult to say which of the locations that I have since been to is my favourite,’ said Ms Gordon, from Dublin. ‘Dubrovnik is an old, walled city full of history and interesting stories; the scenery in Northern Ireland, both on the coast and inland on the glens, is incredible; and the landscape of Iceland, formed by volcanic lava, is so different from both of those. ‘Each of the locations is a great place to visit not just for the Game Of Thrones angle but because they all have plenty of other things to see and do around them that haven’t been used as locations for the show but are just as beautiful.’
On location: Yvonne Gordon in Dubrovnik, top, where several scenes were shot. She also visited Malta’s Mdina Gate, far left, used as the entrance to King’s Landing; Ballintoy Harbour, in Northern Ireland; she went Beyond The Wall in Iceland and to The Dark Hedges, also in Northern Ireland Pictures: caters

New transport scheme better described as ‘Luas on tyres’ SELLING the Swiftway Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) project to the public as ‘Luas on tyres’ rather than an upgrade to bus services was one suggestion received via public consultation on the system. In all, 546 submissions were received by the National Transport Authority (NTA). The NTA said 67 per cent of the submissions were ‘generally in favour of implementing BRT routes in Dublin’; 11.5 per cent were ‘totally against the concept of BRTs’ and the remainder were ‘undecided on their general view’. The negative impact on residential amenities was the issue raised the most frequently (221), followed by safety concerns (209), while better integration with other transport modes was also highlighted. The three schemes put out to public consultation were Blanchardstown to UCD, Clongriffin to Tallaght and Swords to the city centre. A planning application to An Bord Pleanála is on the cards for early 2015 for the Swords to city centre scheme.

Clampdown on rogue taxi drivers and unsafe vehicles by AiLEEn DOnEgAn GARDAÍ are targeting unlicensed taxis this weekend in a bid to clamp down on illegal drivers and make the service safer for the public. The aim is to identify rogue drivers and ensure all taxis are safe and roadworthy. Public Transport Minister Alan Kelly said: ‘Anybody who has a very serious conviction for sexual assault, murder or anything like that will not be able to drive a public service vehicle.’ He said the number of drivers with serious offences was ‘significant enough’ to deal with, but warned the majority were legally registered. Some 30,111 drivers are licensed to drive taxis in the country, with more than 21,600 legal vehicles for hire. Head of the Garda Traffic Corps John Twomey said: ‘New regulations will make the industry safer not only for drivers, but also for members of the public.’ He added: ‘We ask that every member of the public ensures that they only use a legitimate taxi or hackney every time.’ Consumers can check if their taxi is legitimate by using the Taxi Driver Check App, which also enables passengers to email journey details to friends.

Eircom share dive sparked tech boss into no-tax protest A COMPUTER expert, who stopped submitting income tax returns in protest against the Revenue Commissioners, has been fined €6,000. Martin Maguire, from Kill Avenue, Dún Laoghaire admitted he had not filed income tax returns from 2009 to 2011. One of the main reasons for this was connected to the sale of Eircom 15 years ago and he also claimed he has discovered security problems in Revenue’s online system. Soon after the privatisation of the State-owned Telecom Éireann, the company, re-branded as Eircom, saw its stock price fall rapidly causing thousands of investors to suffer huge losses. In court, Maguire claimed Revenue had taken no action in relation to how the company’s shares were originally valued, and their price had been raised resulting in a taxable increase.
He told prosecutor Eileen Finn the reason for not submitting the returns was ‘on principle’. ‘Basically yeah, 500,000 people bought Protest: Share deal Eircom shares. The Revenue Commissioners have a duty to the people of Ireland and to my mind they did not fulfil that duty at all.’ Maguire, whose 20-year-old software design business is based at Westland Row, also told Judge John O’Neill he identified security flaws in Revenue’s online system. However, he admitted he had used the system when filing VAT returns. Judge O’Neill told him: ‘Your principle, protest, is not sufficient to allow you to evade your responsibilities’.

A SERIAL burglar who broke into houses every time he was released on bail has been granted bail again. Eoin Daly, 29, of Forrestlawns, Kingswood, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to five counts of burglary and one of trespass and attempted theft at houses across the capital and commuter towns around the county. His defence said he was in the throes of a chronic heroin addiction which turned him into ‘one-man crime wave’. Judge Mary Ellen Ring agreed to allow Daly out on bail again to attend a drug treatment centre before his sentencing.

DAVID CARROLL is director of services at BeLonG To, support charity for LGBT youth. Ahead of this weekend’s Pride celebrations he talks about the work they do For the uninitiated, what exactly does BeLonG To do? As the national LGBT
youth organisation we were formed, first and foremost, to provide a safe space for LGBT young people who, when we started out 11 years ago, were very much an invisible and under-served section of society. We began by setting up a direct support group which still runs to this day in Dublin; thankfully we’ve been able to expand and now have five groups in the capital and about 20 groups meeting around the country on a weekly basis, serving those between the ages of 14 and 23. Our highest profile campaign, Stand Up, takes place every March and is a call to arms for all people – be they straight, gay or otherwise – to tackle the subject of homophobic and transphobic bullying.
How much of an issue is online bullying? It certainly
happens but verbal and physical bullying are still the most prevalent kind. The internet gets a bad rap but it’s been hugely beneficial too for LGBT young people in terms of reaching out to others. If you’re 14 and sitting in a small village in rural Ireland thinking you might be gay, you have access to information and support that simply didn’t exist 20 years ago.
BeLonG To has been in operation for 11 years. How has the attitude of parents changed over that period? Unfortunately, we do
still deal with young people who experience parental rejection but, by and large, it’s much less common than it used to be. When we first started, we’d have parents ringing us saying things such as ‘I think my child is gay. I’m so disappointed and angry’. Now the most common calls we get from mums and dads are along the lines of: ‘I suspect my son or daughter might be gay? How do I talk to them about it? How do I encourage them to come
out and protect them from bullying?’ The type of response has changed from one of intolerance to one of acceptance and concern.
Did you meet with much resistance when you first began to roll out your services across the country? When we started out

Not only do they provide financial support through various campaigns they run during the year, but they are genuinely interested in the work we do and the message we send out. They’ll also be marching with us during this weekend’s Pride parade which is so important. Young people might traditionally have felt that particular careers weren’t open to them because they’d have to hide their identity but Microsoft will have 40 staff attending the parade with us on Saturday. It’s a wonderful affirmation for young LGBT people to see these adults with hugely successful careers being out and proud.
11 years ago we used to say ‘we’ll know we’ve done well when we end up having an LGBT group in Donegal’ – now we have three groups there. I remember when we first began there was a headline in one of the papers ‘Church anger as gay group targets young people’, the implication being that we were trying to turn teenagers An exhibition of photoggay. Hippos roam at drug lord’s home by sHARON MARRis

D
PABLO ESCOBAR was a drugs baron probably best known for a campaign of assassinations and bombings that could have torn Colombia apart. But in the vast ranch he lived in, the trafficker left a different legacy: a zoo. Though the elephants and giraffes were moved after Escobar (pictured) died in 1993, four hippos remained – and have left his old neighbours with a headache. The hippos have thrived – so much so that 60 of them now roam the countryside. Yet at night, they wander on to neighbouring ranches, eat crops and crush cows under their three-ton weight.
No Colombian zoo wants to take them in and they cannot be returned to Africa. Carlos Valderrama, whose job has been to watch over the herd, said: ‘They’re not tame. The risk of leaving them to browse around will be huge.’ One solution from experts is to castrate the hippos but this is costly. And as the animals are sensitive to sedation, some could also die. Another is a barbecue where the hippos, which apparently taste like pork, can be eaten. But charities fear this would cast Colombia in a negative light.

Children shown how Catholics ‘ignoring to carve up a whale teachings on sex’
JAPAN: Learning about cultural traditions and ‘eating local’ is usually encouraged by green campaigners... but teaching children how to carve up a whale is perhaps not what they had in mind. Pupils ate fried portions of the Baird’s beaked whale on a trip to Minamiboso yesterday. It marked the first coastal whaling season since hunting in the Antarctic was banned in March.
VATiCAN: Many Roman Catholics reject the doctrine that birth control is immoral, the Church has admitted. The Vatican blames its own priests for failing to educate the faithful or help troubled families. The findings, from a questionnaire sent to bishops’ conferences around the world last year, are part of preparations for a two-year study on family issues by Pope Francis.

Bank chief gunned down by assassins
ALBANiA: A bank boss was shot dead by two gunmen as he arrived at work yesterday. Artan Santo, 58, the co-founder and CEO of Banka Credins, had chatted to his assassins, who were sitting on a motorbike parked outside his office, witnesses say. The men suddenly opened fire, shooting Mr Santo six times – once in the head. Police in Tirana say it is too early to determine a motive for the killing.

Google puts Android in watches, cars and homes by AiDAn RADnEDGE
GOOGLE yesterday revealed plans for new ‘smartwatches’ and the next stage of evolution for devices running its Android software, which is now used by a billion people. The tech giant announced three new watches running Android Wear, a version of the operating system tailored to wearable devices, on the first day of its I/O developer conference. These are the LG G and the Samsung Gear Live, which are already available, and will be followed by Motorola’s Moto 360 later this summer. The company also showed off features of the next version of Android, which is code-named ‘Android L’. It has been designed to work across all devices using the operating system. It means a user could check email on a smartwatch, answer the message on a smartphone and delete it on a computer. Google also introduced Android Auto, which is made to work with cars. Meanwhile, Android TV features a recommendation system and voice searches for things such as Breaking Bad or ‘Oscar-nominated movies from

Cameron alone but unbowed on Juncker DAVID CAMERON yesterday remained defiant over his stance on Jean-Claude Juncker becoming the next European Commission president. The British prime minister arrived in Brussels reiterating his belief that there should be a vote on who takes the EU’s top job, despite his Luxembourg counterpart having the support of most other leaders on the continent. ‘I am completely unapologetic about standing up for an important principle in Europe, which is that the elected heads of government should make these choices,’ he said. ‘I am also unapologetic about the need for people to carry forward badly-needed reform in Europe and there will be a vote tomorrow and we’ll see the outcome of that vote.’ Only Hungary seems likely to join Mr Cameron in voting against Mr Juncker’s nomination, raising pressure on a leader who already has pledged to hold a referendum on whether Britain should stay in the EU and who faces strong competition from anti-EU party UKIP. ‘Cameron has maneuvered himself into a corner,’ said Fabian Zuleeg, head of the European Policy Centre, a Brussels-based think-tank. ‘His strategy hasn’t worked and it has added to the process of alienation between the United Kingdom and the rest of the European Union.’

I
agree with eamon Dunphy’s comments [MH, Thurs] that Luis Suarez needs psychiatric help. Considering he’s already bitten twice already, these latest claims would appear to be credible. However, I don’t agree that he shouldn’t be banned for a lengthy period of time. I think for his own sake he needs some time out from football to deal with his issues. MRS BROWN’S BOYS D’MOVIE (15A) HH✩✩✩
B
rendan O’Carroll’s recent statement that he writes squarely for fans rather than critics was highlighted at the Mrs Brown’s Boys d’Movie press screening I attended when not a single audience titter was heard over 90, tumbleweed-strewn minutes. ‘The day I write something for a critic is the day I’ll cut my own throat,’ O’Carroll declared in typically understated fashion. On the evidence of Mrs Brown’s big screen
debut – the first in a proposed trilogy (gulp) – he won’t be investing in a knife sharpener any time soon. In fairness to O’Carroll, it’s easy to understand why he might be peeved; given the incessant Brown-bashing in the media you’d be forgiven for thinking agnes was going around lassoing TV critics with her support stockings and strong-arming them into watching the show against their will. While Mrs Brown’s Boys d’Movie is unlikely to win over any new devotees, it’s warm, silly and schmaltzy enough to leave existing fans feeling like they haven’t been short-changed. The plot, such as it is, sees Mrs Brown’s Moore Street stall in jeopardy when the
redoubtable dublin matriarch is faced with a €4million tax bill (don’t ask). Should she accept a lucrative offer from a Man In a Suit who wants to buy her out or, with fearless sidekick Winnie in tow, limber up for battle? It’s hardly giving too much away to say that agnes opts for the latter and, with recourse to a troop of blind ninjas, a solicitor with Tourettes and the support of her oddball family she comes out fighting. Whether you crack up at all at this or not, it’ll scarcely matter a whit to agnes – with more than €1.25million-worth of advance tickets already sold in the UK, she’ll still be laughing all the way to the credit union.

COld in July (15) HHHH✩ East Texas, 1989. Dexter’s Michael C Hall is Richard Dane, a mild-mulleted picture framer whose timid, family man existence is blasted to pieces one night when he mistakenly shoots dead a young intruder. It’s an act that triggers themes of violence, machismo, fear, justice and the US’s love affair with guns while drawing Dane ever deeper into a murky conspiracy via Sam Shepard’s vengeance seeker – who quickly gets all Cape Fear on his ass. As well as a triangle of superb male leads, also including Don ‘Miami Vice’ Johnson as a flamboyant, pig-farming private detective, the delight of this tense, judiciously humorous gothic thriller is that you’re genuinely never sure what turn it will take next. There are distinct echoes of Cronenberg’s A History Of Violence but, as with his recent cannibal drama, We Are What We Are, director Jim Mickle refashions a genre according to his own unique tastes. All that, plus the coolest faux 1980s soundtrack since Drive. Li-Z

Tuck in to hearty treat Love films? Love food? You’ll struggle not to make yummy sounds over this comfort food comedy. It’s a lightly baked labour of love from writer/director/actor Jon Favreau. He stars as Carl Casper, a formerly edgy chef who’s grown fat and unhappy (yes, even with the perk of bedding a sommelier played by Scarlett Johansson on the side) in the decade he’s been working in a posh restaurant owned by Dustin Hoffman. When a celeb foodie blogger (Oliver Platt, delicious as a make/break critic à la Ratatouille) disses his cuisine as ‘needy’ and suggests ‘his dramatic weight gain is down to him eating all the food sent back to his kitchen’, Carl snaps. A slanging match on Twitter escalates to

the point where workaholic Carl is left unemployed and unemployable. Enter his smokin’ hot, preposterously understanding Cuban ex-wife (Sofía Vergara), who suggests he goes back to basics with his own food truck, while the equally smokin’/undemanding Johansson wisely suggests Carl uses this time out to bond with his neglected ten-year-old son (Emjay Anthony). It’s all very obviously a metaphor for Favreau’s own movie career: after years dutifully slaving over the studio franchise ovens with the likes of Iron Man
Walking On SunShine (12A) HH✩✩✩ Those who found Mamma Mia! too intellectually challenging will be overjoyed to discover this identikit clone, which revels in its own frothy nonsense. Maddie (Annabel Scholey) is about to marry her hunky Italian boyfriend Raf (Giulio Berruti) in sun-drenched Puglia. Complications arise when little sister Taylor (Hannah Arterton) pops over for the nuptials only to discover she loved and left Raf herself on a previous holiday. Obviously sorting out this hilarious mix-up right away would somewhat derail the subsequent 90 minutes of ‘drama’ so she keeps her mouth shut, creating the unlikely love triangle around which much singing and dancing ensues. A jukebox musical in search of a stage adaptation, Walking On Sunshine is a guileless enough feel-good oddity. It at least has the distinction of marking Leona Lewis’s acting debut as sidekick pal
(watch out for the zany Robert Downey Jr cameo) and Cowboys & Aliens, he’s ripe for a palate cleanser. This indulgent if amiably rambling tale is closer to the indie spirit of Swingers, Favreau’s debut as writer/producer. And if the fact Carl ends up happily bashing out steaming portions of toasted cheese to an undiscerning public is, ultimately, an odd statement of artistic defiance, Chef is told with winning integrity and heart. Delivering consistent chuckles rather than belly laughs, what it lacks in jeopardy it makes up for in salivating shots of sizzling foodie porn. Be sure to eat beforehand or you’ll be drooling into your popcorn.

The imminent arrival of streaming being included in calculating the UK’s Top 40 gives this potted history of the music single charts added charm. It shows just how much the world has revolved since the NME totted up the number of seven-inch 45s sold at the local record emporium way back in 1952.

It’s the first World Cup free day in more than two weeks, so it’s down to Andy Murray to supply a spot of sporting drama. It’s been plain sailing for the defending champion thus far, but his third-round opponent, Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut, could pose his first stiff test. A winner on grass in Holland last week, the consistent Agut will be playing Murray at his own baseline game, so expect some punishing, energysapping rallies.

It seems like only yesterday that Steve McDonald (plus twin brother Nick, whatever happened to him?) pitched up on the Street as a fresh-faced and happy-golucky youth. Now, 25 years on – and four marriages later – chubby chops Steve (Simon Gregson) is staring 40 in the double chin and a midlife crisis is looming. How time flies, eh? The curious hybrid of 1960s nostalgia, comedy and drama draws to a close with our hapless anti-hero, played by Nick Frost with customary baffled charm, forced to face up to some hard home truths – and decide what he wants, what he really, really wants. The good news is we get to see a bit more of a somewhat underused Olivia Colman (pictured) as the estranged Mrs Sloane – and finally discover the roots of their marital rift.

Well, Linda Carter won’t be winning any Mum Of The Year contests any time soon after her conflicted reaction to son Johnny coming out as gay. But it’s credit to actress Kellie Bright’s portrayal of the Queen Vic’s landlady that Linda has not come across as a total pariah. Tonight, we learn a little bit more about her troubled past, courtesy of father-in-law Stan.
With Graham off on his summer break, we’ll have to content ourselves tonight with these highlights from the last series. The eclectic line-up this time round includes Kylie Minogue, Julie Andrews and Julie Walters, Hollywood heavyweights Tom Cruise, Matt Damon and Robert De Niro and Irish/ German heartthrob Michael Fassbender (above) gracing the iconic orange sofa. But can anything top the previous season’s womance between Lady Gaga and June Brown (Eastenders’ Dot Cotton)? Rapper Pharrell Williams flirting with Julie Andrews comes close.
It’s strange to think director M Night Shyamalan’s name hasn’t always been synonymous with shocking plot twists – but this is the classic that made his name. Six-year-old Cole (Haley Joel Osment, above) is less than thrilled at being able to see dead people, while child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) tries to help him deal with his odd powers. An engrossing thriller that still stands the test of time.

Then her sister asks her to stand on the altar with her. Apart from the obvious bridesmaid fatigue, Jane has another reason for not wanting to be part of the bridal party – she is hopelessly smitten with her future brother-in-law. Hall set for class reunion
cLubs 20 Years of D1 Recordings
There’s no doubt that D1 Recordings had a massive influence on electronic music in Ireland. Set up by Eamonn Doyle in the early 1990s, it became the first Irish label to release techno by local artists and was home to the debut records of Rob Rowland, Donnacha Costello and David Donohoe. D1 also forged links with the UK and Detroit techno scenes and put out music by DJ Bone and Mark Broom as well as putting on the excellent Model One night. More important, though, is the label’s legacy; while it is still active, D1 laid the basis for the wave of internationally recognised artists like Lerosa and Donnacha Costello, as well as Dublin-based labels like Lunar Disko and Apartment who are involved with the Gary’s Gang night. To celebrate two decades, Doyle (pictured) is sure to bring a box full of vintage D1 records with him. Tonight, Gary’s Gang, The Sweeney Mongrel, Dame Street D2, 10.30pm, free.
Objekt
TJ Hertz has only put out a handful of records as Objekt, but in recent years the Berlin-based producer has become one of the most respected names to operate within the techno-bass sound. Releasing on his own Objekt label as well as for Hessle Audio and Power Vacuum, Hertz’s powerful, fractured rhythms and gut-wrenching basslines have been championed by everyone from Surgeon to Ben UFO. Get down to The Button Factory to hear one of electronic music’s most individualistic artists. Tomorrow, Hidden Agenda/Lunar Disko, The Button Factory, Curved Street D2, 11pm, €8.

Family fortunes: Eamon (Keith McErlean) and Claire (Jane McGrath) return to a crumbling Ballybeg Hall
i
n Brian Friel’s 1979 tragicomedy, the O’Donnells, a gentrified Catholic family, reconvene in their crumbling Donegal pile for the youngest sister’s wedding. Self-abnegating Judith (Cathy Belton, excellent) has renounced her own ambitions in order to live at home and care for their once fearsome, now ailing father; Alice (Rebecca O’Mara) has turned to alcohol in order to deal with life’s disappointments; and depressed pianist Claire (Jane McGrath) finds solace in Chopin. Meanwhile, fantasist Casimir (Tadhg Murphy), sporting the emotional bruises of a troubled childhood, has returned from Hamburg where he may or may not have a wife and three sons. In this deeply meditative and elegiac

work, with its clear debt to Chekhov, the discord of family life becomes a metaphor for a country at odds with its own troubled history. In one of the play’s sharpest scenes, Casimir concocts a comically rich genealogy – in which Yeats, Sean O’Casey and Gerald Manley Hopkins are all major players – for the benefit of an American professor visiting Ballybeg Hall to investigate the influence of the Roman Catholic aristocracy on Irish culture. Patrick Mason’s handsome, well-acted production catches the sense of lassitude that permeates the inner lives of its onceprivileged characters but the easy-going
pace, particularly in the second act, underscores the absence of any great tension or frisson; that characters are pretty much resigned to their fates before the play even begins scarcely creates much in the way of suspense. Murphy is well cast as the vulnerable, skittish brother trapped in a world of make believe, while Keith McErlean gives a particularly nuanced turn as Alice’s husband Eamon, who, despite his pungent disdain for the class system, expresses a greater sense of anguish at the loss of Ballybeg than its put-upon owners.
Benjamin O’Shea aka Benjamin Damage was the first artist signed to Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons label and rose to recognition in collaboration with Doc Daneeka on the single Creeper. Damage subsequently released solo material for the label, including an acclaimed debut album, Heliosphere, in 2013. Since then, he has performed around the world and brings his raw techno sound to Twisted Pepper’s basement this weekend. 125 new jobs for Dublin as two tech firms expand
SOME 125 jobs are coming to Dublin at two separate companies. Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced yesterday that Innovative, a library technology and automation software company is to add 25 jobs at its EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) HQ in the capital, bringing employment to 50 by the end of 2015. He also announced that AdRoll, a leading online retargeting platform which launched new offices in Dublin yesterday, will hire 100 additional staff and double its office space. Mr Kenny said Innovative’s decision to expand is ‘another vote of confidence’ in Ireland. Innovative CEO Kim Massana said the firm had ‘a very positive experience’ of the business environment in Ireland since setting up here. AdRoll also set up its EMEA HQ here last October and in March this year it announced it was moving to new offices and revising upward hiring plans to 120. Expansion in Europe is due to growth of over 270 per cent, exceeding expectations since the region’s launch in 2013. The company is hiring across all areas, including sales, account management, finance and engineering to support customers in a number of languages. AdRoll’s first phase of 100 hires is ahead of schedule and will be in place by the end of 2014. ‘We are excited about the talent we have found in Ireland and the response we’ve had since entering the European market,’ said AdRoll chief Aaron Bell. ‘In just a few years, retargeting has become as essential as search engine marketing for every digital marketer, and we see the EMEA region as an engine for growth in the years ahead.’

FOR those of you taking holidays this summer, how do you plan to manage your absence from work? These days, technology ‘allows’ us always to be on call. Ugh. I’m a big devotee of the ‘total immersion holiday’. If you keep your phone on, make it for personal calls only. No checking emails or voicemails. We must switch off on annual leave. Otherwise we won’t refuel, which defeats the purpose of the holiday. The key thing is getting your ducks in a row before you leave. Make sure your Out of Office autoreply states the date of your return to the fray. Same goes for your voicemail greeting. It’s up to you to manage expectations with your boss, customers and clients about not checking in when away. A friend who works for a pharmaceutical giant in Ireland decided to turn the phone off for her week’s holidays. When she turned it back Get your ducks on at Dublin in a row before airport she had copious missed you leave calls from her boss, but she calmly called to say she had made a decision to turn off all communication to refuel. Her boss accepted this and understood because she had confidently delivered this message. Someone who does not handle this well apologises. No way. Before you say: ‘My job is precarious enough as it is,’ I will stop you there. You are no good to anyone if you burn out or become a yes man or woman.

Team boss Toto Wolff revealed that transparency was ‘suffering a little bit’ between the drivers after Rosberg’s win in Austria on Sunday, when Hamilton was runner-up. Championship leader Rosberg (left), who leads second-placed Hamilton by 29 points, said: ‘It’s all open – the data, everything. It’s just that sometimes you are not going to put it on the table, and say “look here at what I’ve done”. If I find a little bit of an advantage somewhere then I’m not going to tell everybody about it. I’ll keep it to myself. We do work together, but at the same time we’re fighting each other, so whenever we can have a little bit of an advantage over the other we’ll take it.’

I think croke Park will suit both of them.’
Armagh are considering the option of a last-ditch appeal to the Disputes Resolution Authority to clear their suspended trio for tomorrow’s Ulster football semi-final. Michael Darragh Macauley is a footballer less ordinary, in so many ways. Take his parting comment at a recent press briefing ahead of Dublin’s Leinster football semi-final with Wexford. ‘I’m sure I can guess the headline,’ he smiled. ‘“Macauley wants to loaf the rest of his team-mates!’” To explain: a few minutes earlier, the Dublin midfielder was asked about his opinions on the World Cup. ‘I’m not actually a big soccer fan,’ he replied. ‘That’s shocking, isn’t it, yeah – and I don’t like steak! Weird.’ But pressed to give his views on Cameroon’s Spurs defender Benoit Assou-Ekotta headbutting a team-mate, the unorthodox and easy-going Macauley, who has become one of Dublin’s most influentil players, said: ‘I’ve felt like loafing a few of the lads at times.’ He quickly added: ‘Ah no, jeez, that’s madness obviously. Fully focused on Wexford. Macauley has tunnel vision right now, even forgetting that he’s Player of the Year. ‘I was asked about it recently, I’d almost forgot I was,’ says Macauley. ‘It doesn’t weigh on me. I just go about my business.’ He also pointed out that Dublin have learned big lessons from 2012 when they became ‘obsessed’ with defending the All-Ireland and failed. ‘Lads aren’t patting themselves on the back over last year,’ insisted Macauley. ‘Defending the title was something we grappled with in 2012 and maybe became a bit obsessed with.’

The second seed fell at the first hurdle at Wimbledon 12 months ago after crashing out in the second round in 2012 when he lost in five sets to Lukas Rosol. The Spaniard knew he would be tested when he was again drawn against the bighitting Czech and he was in trouble after losing the first set before being broken early, and then facing a set point, in the second. The Scot’s range of spins and slices, which became less evident under former coach Ivan Lendl, were on full show in his secondround destruction of Blaz Rola. And the 27-year-old thinks new coach Amelie Mauresmo will encourage him to continue to show the full Murray repertoire against 27th-seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round today. ‘That’s

Suarez ban bites into Reds title ambitions
Herr United go as they look to Shaw up squad
MANCHESTER United’s determination to get their summer transfer business done early was underlined as they overcome a late hitch to sign Ander Herrera while Luke Shaw arrived in the north west for a medical. United had a £28.85million bid for 24-year-old Herrera rejected by Athletic Bilbao yesterday before an improved offer secured his signature. The Spain under-23 player said: ‘Signing for Manchester United is a dream come true. I have played at Old Trafford for Athletic in the Europa League and it was one of the highlights of my career so far. I can’t wait for my first game in the famous red shirt.’ Shaw, 18, will have a medical today and is expected to sign from Southampton in a deal worth an initial £27m, which could rise to £34m with add ons.
LUIS Suarez departed the World Cup in disgrace yesterday with a four-month ban from all football imposed for biting an opponent – leaving Liverpool facing up to another nightmare scenario with their star striker. Fifa’s independent disciplinary committee imposed a World Cup record ban on the 27-year-old of nine international matches as well as the four-month-long total ban that will devastate Liverpool’s plans for the new season. It would keep him out for at least 12 club games – nine Premier

Muller’s the bright spark as Germans ease through
GERMANY match-winner Thomas Muller says it took a brainwave to break down the United States’ stubborn resistance in Recife. The Bayern Munich midfielder, still only 24, took his overall tally of World Cup goals to nine with his fourth strike in Brazil. Both sides went into the game needing just a point to be certain of a place in the last 16 and Muller admitted the Germans were left frustrated by compatriot Jurgen Klinsmann’s tactics. ‘We were dominant,’ said Muller. ‘All the Americans did was sit back deep in their own half and when that happens it just becomes a patience game. ‘Sometimes even I manage to have a bright idea – I spend the whole day training like I’m obsessed anyway.’ The decisive moment came when Muller fired home a

Algeria take slim chance to become history boys ISLAM SLIMANI’S equaliser sent Algeria through to the knockout stages of a World Cup for the first time ever in Curitiba last night. The Desert Foxes looked to be going out of the tournament when Aleksandr Kokorin put Russia ahead after just six minutes.
