Rebels on the run: Some of the first stills from the fourth Mad Max
FANS have had to wait 30years but Mad Max is back – with Tom Hardy in the driving seat. Just to taunt lovers of the post-apocalyptic franchise even more, here are the first official stills from the new film, Fury Road, which won’t be in cinemas until next May. British actor Hardy, 36, replaces star Mel Gibson in the role of ‘Mad’ Max Rockantansky, the hero of a futuristic dystopian world brought alive by director George Miller. Charlize Theron joins him as Imperator Furiosa but will the two rebels be able to restore order in a land of chaos? Find out next year... Warrior: Charlize Theron
IT MAY lack rows of large glass tubes or the enormous pulleys favoured by Oompa Loompas but engineers have invented a machine that powers a factory on ice cream. Like a contraption from Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Ben & Jerry’s Chunkinator converts waste products – such as milk, cream syrups and bits of fruit – into energy. They are broken down by 24billion micro-organisms and converted into biogas. It has provided enough power to make 9million litres of ice cream in the past 12months. The factory’s head engineer Arjan Vloon said: ‘The biodigester gives us the opportunity to take what was a waste product and turn it into a benefit for our business.’ The machine – which resembles a giant vat – can also use waste water directly without costly processing. The company said it could halve energy bills at its factory in Hellendoorn, Holland.

Homeless crisis ‘a policy failure’
SOME 10,000 homeless people in Ireland were supported in 2013, up 2,000 on 2012, a report by Focus Ireland reveals. The Government came under fire with the publication of the data last night, which showed the support group has already helped 8,000 so far this year. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin called the situation ‘shameful’, adding that the homelessness crisis was ‘an indication of a more widespread failure of social policy’.

Cork-based English writer David Mitchell also made the cut with The Bone Clocks. A rule change has opened the prestigious award up to more countries this year, enabling four US authors to vie for the 46-year-old fiction prize.

Hard-up to get €100 off water bills by ORnA cunningHAM
THE Government has agreed that about 415,000 households on the household benefits package will get €100 a year towards their water bill. Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton also said all children and over 70s would get free GP care over the next three years. The announcements came after ministers said the next Budget would not be as painful as feared. Finance Minister Michael Noonan said when projections for adjustments were made in April, it was expected €2billion in cuts would be needed. However, due to economic expansion, the deficit target of three per cent or less can be achieved with ‘less tax increases and less cutbacks’, he said. Fianna Fáil finance spokesperson Michael McGrath said the adjustment could be less than €1billion. The Government promised to give back in this Budget, he said, adding that it had
Looking up?: Michael Noonan identified the €32,800 threshold at which earners enter the 40 per cent tax band as a point to work on. But some 1.3million taxpayers won’t feel any benefit, he said. Siptu yesterday hit out at preferential treatment given to high earners. Speaking after the HSE indicated to an Oireachtas committee it will seek approval for some hospitals and health agencies to continue extra payments to certain staff, Siptu’s Paul Bell said many members were appalled. ‘It is the stated policy of the HSE that managers in [voluntary hospitals and health agencies] should be paid the same as those in comparative roles in the public sector,’ Mr Bell said.

As heat rises, plea to play safe and mind the elderly
by ORnA CunningHAM
WITH very warm weather set to last for the next couple of days at least, organisations have asked the public to be aware of their safety and that of others. Met Éireann issued a Status Yellow warning yesterday evening, advising of high temperatures – a possible 27C in places – last night and lasting until tomorrow. But if you decide to take a splash in the water, don’t involve alcohol, said DrinkAware. Cork and Dublin had the highest drowning figures last year – seven occurred in the capital – and alcohol can endanger even strong swimmers. A spokesperson said: ‘Alcohol slows down people’s reaction time, impacts their coordination, and affects their perception of distance and direction. When it comes to water-sports, this can be an extremely dangerous combination.’ Age Action spokesperson Eamon Timmins also urged people to look after other members of society vulnerable during a heatwave, asking people to look after the elderly and to call in on older friends and neighbours to check they are all right.
Happy birthday dear Dart IRISH Rail celebrated the Dart’s 30th birthday yesterday as it invited commuters to share their best memories of the transit system. Sandymount beach reopens to public
DUBLIN City Council has lifted a temporary bathing prohibition order on Sandymount Strand. The south Dublin beach had been closed to swimmers for a week amid fears about faecal matter. A test last Friday showed the water was not clean enough to bathe in, with DCC unsure of the cause of the contamination, but after further tests the water reached the standards required. Meanwhile, Clare County Council has installed a high-tech speaker system at Lahinch and Kilkee beaches that, when it senses a dog, blares a message to owners to clean up their business.

THE newly crowned Dutch queen wept as two planes MH1 touched down with 40 coffins 7 bearing victims of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. Queen Maxima joined grieving relatives who watched yesterday’s sombre arrival in Eindhoven. Holland held a day of mourning for its 193 nationals killed in the crash in eastern Ukraine last Thursday. They were among 298 people on the plane allegedly shot down by pro-Russian rebels. Briton Barry Sweeney, father of 28-year-old victim Liam who was flying to New Zealand to watch his beloved Newcastle United, was among mourners at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. He said: ‘We need closure. When Liam was flying out I never thought I’d be standing here today.’ The coffins were driven to a Dutch barracks where identification of the bodies will begin. ‘If I have to wait five months for identification, I can do it,’ said Silene Fredriksz-Hoogzand, whose son, Bryce, and his girlfriend Daisy Oehlers died. “Waiting while the bodies were in the field and in the train was a nightmare.’

AT LEAST 47 people were killed yesterday when a plane landing in heavy rain and stormy weather crashed on a small Taiwanese island. Another 11 people were injured when the ATR-72 operated by TransAsia Airways crashed during its second attempt to land on Penghu, an island in the Taiwan Strait between Taiwan and China. About 200 military personnel were sent to help recover people on the plane. ‘I heard a loud bang,’ one resident said. ‘I thought it was thunder, and then I heard another bang and I saw a fireball not far away from my house.’ Taiwan’s president Ma Ying-jeou called it ‘a very sad day in the history of Taiwanese aviation’.

t’s humid out there. Hot and sticky. And sweaty – hygiene freaks, you have my sympathies. But that doesn’t mean that I won’t be laughing at you – you guys are hysterical. Like when you go to extraordinary lengths not to touch things in the public domain? I love that. Germaphobes are inwardly horrified to live in a world populated by stinking, fetid mouth-breathers such as myself, so I often daydream about using their toothbrushes behind their backs, or feeding with my fingers in front of them before asking to borrow their phone. The gas thing is that they’ll even give you the phone and try to hide their use of a hand sanitiser on it afterwards, which is just so judgmental (like Asian tourists wearing surgery masks: ‘Oh it’s not YOU, it’s just ALL OF YOU’). Indeed, hygiene lovers are unfailingly polite because the sheer breadth of their phobias make taking a stand on any one point so arbitrary and ineffectual that it might just signal the thin end of the psychotic episode wedge. Fighter jets downed from ‘inside Russia’ by wiLL sTOnE
Comfort in pain: Queen Maxima and, right, two mourners Pictures: ePA/reuters
TWO Ukrainian fighter jets were shot down yesterday – just 32km south of the MH17 crash site. The planes were allegedly hit by rockets fired from inside Russia – but separatists claimed responsibility for the attack. Footage was posted online of the wrecked Sukhoi-25 aircraft, which came down in the rebel-held area of Savur Mogila. Ukraine’s Security Council said the military jets were hit at an altitude of 5,200m, adding: ‘They were shot down professionally. The terrorists do not have such professionals.’ Last night, it was unclear how many were killed by the attack but it is thought the jets could have been carrying two crew members each. The clip uploaded showed pro-Russian separatists walking through the debris as smoke billowed above. The attack revived questions about the rebels’ weapons capabilities – and how much support they are getting from Russia. The US accuses Russia of backing the separatists and fuelling the conflict, which has brought Russia’s relations with the West and Europe to a 20-year low. A Nato military officer yesterday said: ‘We have noted an increase in the amount of weapons being transferred from Russia to Ukraine in the last several weeks. ‘We continue to see evidence of the movement of weapons into Ukraine from Russia since the downing of MH17, which is a cause for concern.’

‘Hero’ ebola After 2-year salvage mission, Costa Concordia sails for the scrapyard doctor is infected by killer virus A DOCTOR hailed a ‘national hero’ for his role in fighting an outbreak of ebola in Sierra Leone has contracted the deadly virus. Sheik Umar Khan, a virologist who has treated more than 100 people since February, is being cared for by a team of international doctors at a Médecins Sans Frontières unit in Kailahun. Health minister Miatta Kargbo was reportedly in tears when she heard the 39-year-old had been infected with the virus, which has a fatality rate of almost 90 per cent. She said: ‘He made the ultimate sacrifice by Sheik Umar Khan putting his own life on the line to treat and save Sierra Leoneans of the ebola virus. By going into that treatment centre and spending more than 12 hours daily just to save lives is a tremendous sacrifice. I will do anything and everything in my power to ensure he survives.’ While 206 people have died from the virus in Sierra Leone and about 400 in neighbouring Guinea and Liberia, official statistics revealed 108 patients had survived after treatment. Health workers have gone on strike at the Kenema Government Hospital, 300km east of capital Freetown, after three nurses working with Dr Khan were killed by the disease.
The last journey by DAniEL binns
SURROUNDED by a flotilla of small boats, the rusting wreck of the Costa Concordia has begun her final voyage to the scrapyard. Bells tolled on the Italian island of Giglio yesterday as tugboats towed the cruise ship away from the port where she capsized two years ago, killing 32 people. She will make the four-day, 370km trip to Genoa – where she will be broken up – at a virtual walking pace amid fears that toxic waste could spill into the sea. Accompanying her will be boats to monitor pollution. Objects such as suitcases and furniture will be caught in huge nets attached to the ship. Refloated ten days ago, the Costa Concordia is being kept afloat by giant buoyancy chambers. Hours after setting sail, salvage master Nick Sloane said things were ‘going well’. Divers will tomorrow search the seabed where the ship had been marooned since January 2012 for the body of Indian waiter Russel Rebello – the only victim who has not been found. Francesco Schettino, the ship’s captain, is on trial for manslaughter. THE sALVAgE fLOTiLLA

The
respected South African former judge spoke as the conflict – in which at least 147 children and 74 women have died – showed no sign of abating. Israeli troops clashed with Hamas yesterday near Khan Younis, where heavy shelling killed at least one civilian and forced many to flee. US secretary of state John Kerry, in Tel Aviv to try to resolve the crisis, said ceasefire talks had been productive but ‘there’s still work to be done’.

School head held Preserve us! Rustom Kerawalla, who founded Vibgyor High Schools in India, has also been cited for not running background checks on the prime suspect, 30-yearold skating teacher Mustafa. Police in Bangalore said Mustafa, a father to a girl of five, was fired by his previous school after similar claims were made.
DRIVERS found themselves in a sticky situation after a lorry-load of preserved fruit caused a traffic ‘jam’. Motorists on the E45 near Sunne, west Sweden, faced lengthy delays as firefighters hosed away the 100m stretch of ‘common pancake jam’. It happened after one of the lorry’s doors came loose, causing it to shed its load, police said. Nobody was hurt – but drivers were urged to take an alternative route.

Charli, aka Charlotte aitchison, also revealed she is angling for a Coldplay duet after supporting Chris Martin and co on tour in 2012 and explained she was so overwhelmed by their recent album, Ghost Stories, that she was reduced to tears. ‘i actually listened to that record on a plane the other day and i cried! i think that album is so good,’ she gushed. ‘To collaborate definitely would be cool. i think Chris Martin is one of the best, top-line writers around at the moment. i’ve always thought his melodies are incredible.’

ADELE’S 19-month-old son has been awarded five-figure damages to settle a privacy case over paparazzi photos. Angelo Adkins won the payout after his parents brought proceedings against Corbis Images UK for releasing photos of the boy and his mother to the press. Adele (pictured), 26, was adamant the toddler was not and never would be ‘public property’, lawyers for the singer and her partner, Simon Konecki, said. ‘It is a matter of profound sadness that
many of his milestone moments, such as his first family outing and his first trip to playgroup, were photographed and published worldwide expressly against his family’s wishes,’ solicitor Jenny Afia told a London court. The action concerned photos taken last year. The photographers, who were not employed by Corbis, had been told they would face legal action if they breached Angelo’s privacy again. The agency offered to pay damages and legal costs.

Baby alone 17hrs after Peaches’ drug death THE baby son of Peaches Geldof was left alone with her body for up to 17hours, an inquest heard yesterday. Baby Phaedra – then just 11 months old – was in another room of the family home in Wrotham, Kent, when Peaches, 25, was found dead from a heroin overdose. Her husband, Tom Cohen, raised the alarm after he tried to call the model, presenter and columnist on April 6 but got no reply. Her body was discovered in a spare room at 1.30pm the following day. Investigating officer Det Ch Insp Paul Fotheringham told the inquest police found 6.9g of ‘importation quality’ heroin at the house she shared with Phaedra, Mr Cohen and their other son, Astala, two, but no indication she planned to take her own life. Its purity, of 61 per cent, ‘far exceeded’ the 26 per cent usually found at street level, he added. Peaches had been a heroin addict and took the substitute methadone for two-and-a-

half years before her death, the Gravesend hearing was told. Mr Cohen said his wife started using the drug again in February this year. She had weekly drug tests for two years as part of her addiction treatment but the musician
said he now believed she had been lying when she told him they were clear. Forensic scientist Emma Harris said tolerance to heroin is lost ‘fairly rapidly’ when addicts stop using the drug. ‘Deaths commonly occur in people who have previously been tolerant and have returned to using heroin,’ she added. Pathologist Peter Jerreat found ‘fatal levels’ of the drug in her blood as well as codeine, methadone and morphine. Peaches also had puncture wounds on her elbows, wrists and thumbs. Recording a verdict of drug-related death, coroner Roger Hatch said: ‘For reasons we will never know, prior to her death she returned to taking heroin.’ Peaches’ mother, Paula Yates, died of an accidental heroin overdose in 2000 when Peaches was 11. Like her daughter, Paula died at home with one of her children in the property. Peaches’ half-sister, Tiger Lily, was just four years old at the time.

High roller: Snoop with John Kerry
Snoop: I did drugs in the White House SNOOP DOGG may have left Barack Obama fuming after he confessed to smoking drugs in the White House. The rapper, 42, roped in help from ‘the CIA, or the FBI, the alphabet boys’ who inadvertently helped him light a spliff. Snoop confessed to smoking in the bathroom of the US president’s home while talking to chat show star Jimmy Kimmel on his online show GGN: The Double G News Network. The Drop It While It’s Hot hitmaker said a guard helped him light up after Snoop said he needed one to mask the smell of his Doggy business. ‘I said, “May I use the bathroom for a second?” And they said, “What are you gonna do, No.1 or No.2?” I said, “No.2”,’ the rapper explained. He added: ‘So I said, “Look, when I do the number two, I usually, you know, have a cigarette or light something to get the aroma right.” And they said, “Well you know what? You can light a piece of napkin.” I said, “I’ll do that’’.’ Puffing a dodgy cigarette on his show, he replicated his fast one adding: ‘And the napkin was this.’ Snoop, real name Calvin Broadus, was a guest at the White House in December for the Kennedy Centre Honours reception.

Tobacco policy will impact on play funding THE Department of Children and Youth Affairs is to take account of the Tobacco Free Ireland policy in its future rounds of funding. Minister for Children James Reilly sanctioned €250,000 in payments for children’s play and recreation projects yesterday, saying: ‘Play and recreation are fundamental to the development of children and young people.’ But he warned in order to be eligible for department funding in future, applications will face an additional criterion related to the tobacco-free policy. He said the Government aims to de-normalise smoking for young people and future funding for playgrounds will be contingent on the projects being no-smoking areas.

Victim of suicide driver calls for more training for gardaí THE victim of a suicidal driver has spoken to the Minister for Justice about the need for increased training for gardaí dealing with suicidal people. Elber Twomey lost her husband, Con, 38, her young son, Oisín, 16months, and her unborn baby, Elber Marie, while on holiday in Torquay in 2012. A taxi driver who had left a suicide note purposely veered across the dual carriageway with tragic consequences for Elber and her family. Polish driver Marek Wojciechowski was killed instantly in the collision. Now, Ms Twomey is calling for the introduction of training for gardaí dealing with suicidal people. After the incident, Devon and Cornwall police reviewed their pursuit policy in instances where suicide may be a factor. It was later found the actions of the officers ‘were, in effect, like running up to someone standing
by ORnA cunningHAM on the edge of a cliff, blowing a whistle and shouting at them to move away,’ said Fine Gael chairperson and president of the Irish Association of Suicidology, Dan Neville. Mr Neville said: ‘I was pleased today to have the opportunity to introduce Elber Twomey to the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald. ‘Elber is working to bring attention to the fact that at present very few gardaí in Ireland are trained in how to deal with a suicidal person, not to mention a suicidal driver. ‘As Templemore opens its doors to the first recruits in five years, I appealed to the Minister for Justice to ensure that updated training modules on suicide awareness and dealing with suicidal people, are included for the new cohort.’

Brown, of Monkstown Farm, Dún Laoghaire, also admitted punching Martin o’Toole in May 2013, causing his head to hit the ground. Judge Mary Ellen Ring sentenced Brown to three years in jail, with 18 months suspended, and suspended a sentence of two and a half years on o’Brien, of Rollins Villas, Sallynoggin.

Corcoran, of Kishogue Park, Lucan, was ordered by Judge Mary Ellen Ring to do 220 hours of community service in lieu of two and a half years in prison, which she said would allow him to pay back his debt while remaining in the community.

Hackers can access your computer for a mere 7c ACCESS to your computer for criminals is more cheaply bought than ever before, an Irish IT security company has warned. Gangs of cyber criminals around the world are selling ‘DIY malware packages’ in bulk and at low cost, it has been claimed. Ronan Murphy, of Irish IT security firm Smarttech.ie, explained that gangs infect millions of computers globally with a virus, and then sell the details of infected users to criminals who extort financial details from them. Due to the number of computers attacked, a criminal can now buy access to 10,000 deliberately infected computers for around
€7,500 – or just over seven cent per computer. Mr Murphy warned that a price war has broken out amongst cyber criminals. ‘For the criminal gangs around the world who want to launch a cyber-attack, it is a buyers’ market. ‘Initially they may not have had the skills to build and deploy the malware services themselves, but with this new user-friendly model they can buy it off the shelf. ‘The Malware as a Service (MaS) market is a scary prospect because it allows non-technical criminals to branch out into an area where they have no experience,’ Mr Murphy added.

arry, you believe the line from Israel that Palestinians are being given warning of the impending attacks. Do you know how long the residents have to flee their homes? Three minutes. Where do they run to for safety if they do manage to get out before being hit by US-made missiles? and if every target hit was Hamas using civilians to hide behind then please explain the bombing of hospitals or snipers killing people coming to the aid of victims or the kids playing on the beach. Blogger Nick Bain tells Naomi Mdudu the trick to a gent’s wardrobe is getting the details right
N
Menswear rules
PhotograPhy: Paul Whitfield, grooming: VuyisWa Zanele, styled By naomi mdudu
ick Bain is one of the few bloggers to have made a long career out of working in the world they now critique. He trained as a menswear designer in Bournemouth ten years ago (after ‘doodling suits on the side pages of books’ during law school), then made his way to London to work on Savile Row, followed by a stint designing suits supplied to the likes of Next and Marks & Spencer. ‘i’ve always had a preoccupation with menswear,’ says Bain, 33, as he sits among the rails and rails of clothes lining his office in Notting Hill. ‘i like that it has a very strict set of rules. A suit will always look like a suit. But designers like Aitor [Throup] show that you can play around and do amazing things with it. ‘Great menswear,’ he continues, ‘is all about the hidden details and simple things, like doing a cuff in a new way.’ instead of starting his own label, Bain launched his blog, Bainser, in 2009 before turning his hand to social media management for the Morgan Hotel Group, Harvey Nichols and now for Secret Sales. ‘i’ve always been in love with social media,’ he says. ‘i became that boring person at the party saying that in five years’ time, social media was going to be huge. So i thought i either had to find a million pounds and set up my own label or use my knowledge elsewhere.’ Social media is now the place he goes to find inspiration for his own look. ‘i’ll look at what other people are wearing or look at what people are shooting on instagram and what my friends are wearing,’ he says. Unsurprisingly, tailoring has long informed his own sartorial tendencies, although that has subsided over the past few years. ‘My style used to be formal because i had to wear a suit all the time,’ he explains. ‘i would never have worn skinny jeans. Then i put a pair on and almost overnight, wearing anything else felt completely wrong. Now i literally live in my Nudie jeans and everything else i wear is built around them.’ Age has made him less – not more – conservative when it comes to making a statement with his clothes. ‘The older i’ve got, the braver i’ve become,’ he says. ‘i just started not to care. My motto is: “As long as i like it, it’s fine.”’

He says his wardrobe is a mix of high and low fashion but is not convinced by the menswear offerings on the high street. ‘There’s better choice for men than ever,’ he says, ‘but even now you can go to some places and everthing suit-wise is just navy and black. It’s boring.’ In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find an aspect of menswear Bain doesn’t have an opinion on – which is part of the reason he decided to set up his blog. ‘When I’m a reviewing a fashion show on my blog, it’ll often look at things like a pattern cut and reference the knowledge I have,’ he says. ‘Sometimes, there isn’t the depth of knowledge on some blogs. That shines through and those people tend to last a few seasons before disappearing.’

The eyes really do have it
Lately, the focus has been on eye creams. Here are three to suit all budgets, writes Vicki-Marie Cossar

yeS can give away a multitude of sins, from dark circles as a result of countless late nights to bad diets. No one wants to look like a panda, so we’ve checked out some of the latest products to hit the market. The most recent offering from Dr Perricone is Neuropeptide Eye Contour (€210, perriconemd.co.uk). This contains neuropeptides, which are said to influence the activity of the brain by interacting between skin cells to counteract inflammation, hypersensitivity and skin conditions, as well as increase collagen production, circulation and skin suppleness. The MI Phytomer Pionnière XMF Reset Eye Fluid (€94, klmbeauty. co.uk) contains three marine ingredients designed to rehydrate cell viability (damaged by the effects of pollution) and boost the
connective tissue to ensure a smoother surface with reduced fine lines. It also works to reduce dark circles by improving circulation and eliminating signs of puffiness.
Fight the look of fatigue with Nip + Fab Bee Sting Fix Eye (€19, nipandfab.com). Makers claim this eye cream, which contains bee venom, controls the facial muscles and increases circulation, gently plumping
out and firming the skin. It also contains propolis extract, which is collected from botanical sources and used as a sealant in the hive – it’s a great skin healer, antioxidant and antiseptic.
insiDER’s Tip face scrub Celebrity makeup artist Gemma Aldous (gemmaaldous. co.uk) explains how to make a homemade lemon exfoliating scrub. ‘Blackheads are caused by blocked pores,’ she says. ‘Lemons are full of vitamin C and natural antioxidants and have antibacterial properties. The alpha hydroxy acid helps unblock the pores and exfoliate the skin while staying hygienic and natural. It will also help with scarring and generally brighten the complexion. The white pith of a lemon is also brilliant for restoring dry skin.’ Ingredients: 2½ cups sugar, ½ cup olive oil or coconut oil, 2tbsp lemon juice, 1tsp lemon zest, 1tsp orange zest. Method: Mix together and rub over your face in small, circular motions. Wait 5min and rinse off with cold water.

GROOMING SOS Declan Leavy tackles men’s grooming woes Summer is in full swing, and with the sunny weather – no matter how sporadic – comes the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Here’s my pick of SPF favourites, as well as some weapons to treat overexposure. Nivea is my go-to brand for affordable and effective sun care. The new Nivea Sun Protect & Refresh range contains menthol, which stimulates the coldsensing receptors in the skin to give a refreshing feeling. My standout product is the Protect and Refresh Invisible Cooling Mist SPF 20, €11.53, which instantly cools, absorbs quickly and provides high UVA and UVB protection. It’s also great for spraying on to the scalp – an area often neglected. Available from supermarkets and pharmacies. A brilliant product for men with sensitive skin, La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF50+ Oil offers high protection in a really light dry oil. Easy to apply and great for hairy arms, legs and popping on bald patches, this is a great one for golf or sailing bags. €22, from pharmacies and department stores. Guys with thinning hair are more susceptible to sun damage to the scalp, which can cause further hair loss. Try to use an SPF treatment specifically formulated for the scalp to prevent damage caused by UV rays. Soltan Hair & Scalp Spray SPF30 contains a triple action formula which helps to prevent hair damage and sunburnt scalp. €5.59, from Boots.
Don’t forget to protect the lips. The Body Shop Vitamin E Lip Care SPF 15 is a hydrating lip balm that soothes and protects lips from the drying effects of the sun. €6.96, from The Body Shop. Dermalogica After Sun Repair is the one sun care product I’m never without, because quite simply it really works. Chamomile, cucumber and lavender help to instantly cool the skin and reduce redness, but the key ingredient is Japanese alder, which accelerates the repair of UV damage after sun exposure. €38 From Dermalogica salons. Growing up, Vichy was the number one skincare brand for the Leavy clan, and all these years later I’m still a dedicated user. Vichy Capital Soleil Aftersun, €17.95, is a refreshing gel that hydrates, cools and softens the skin after a day in the sun. Like all after sun products, store it in the fridge for extra cooling benefits. Available from pharmacies and selected department stores. If they’re proven to work, I’m a big fan of home skincare remedies. Believe it or not, full fat natural yoghurt is an effective treatment for sunburnt skin as it contains lots of probiotics which help to promote skin healing. Apply a layer to effected areas, leave for 15 minutes or so, and then rinse off with cold water. Simples. My brand of choice is Glenisk – around €1.69 from supermarkets.
ON OUR RADAR with Orna Cunningham Beauty line CATRICE is looking forward to autumn and the season’s new trends with its range, so we trialled three of their offerings to see how they’ll fare as the seasons change.
CATRICE Tinted Lip Glow Balm (RRP €5.49) was a delightful surprise – the stick slides on as a thin balm, but the colour that emerges depends on your own pH levels. Reapplication means a darker colour too, so be careful if you want a subtle pink. The colour is fruit-ripe with as much impact as a lippy, but more natural, and it really stood out with simple, dewy make up. A little like the patent nude shoe KMiddy is so fond of wearing, CATRICE
Advertising Feature
Beautifying Lip Smoother (RRP €3.99) is subtle and smooth, evening out fine lines in one swipe. The applicator is super-soft and gives a youthful look. We tried Sweet Caramel, which smells good enough to eat. Pale pals, rejoice – CATRICE Colour Correcting Mattifying Powder is a fine, silky powder that works on the palest of skin. It’s only available in one shade, but the compact contains four colours – pink, to freshen up tired complexions, purple for lustre, green to neutralise red tones and beige to enhance your own skin tone. It’s a beauty superhero, and is a steal at €4.99.

What you do get is an intimate portrait of the gentoo penguins, which breed in Port Lockroy, Antarctica, each year – next to the world’s most southerly post office. The gentoos are a funny bunch – they mate for life, but nick rocks off each other when they build their nests.

Deep and meaningful drama or a pretentious riddle? The jury’s out as Hugo Blick’s tale of Nessa Stein (Maggie Gyllenhaal, above) rolls back eight years to Nessa’s first encounter with Atika on the West Bank. It’s a very different Nessa to the haunted woman we’ve met so far. Current events in Gaza give this tale a dark edge.

Now, the only sector soaring is technology, previously the preserve of the geeks. So it’s high time Silicon Valley, the West Coast home of Google and the like, was satirised on screen too. An eight-part HBO comedy is doing just that. Named Silicon Valley, it is the brainchild of Mike Judge, best known for animated classics Beavis And Butthead and King Of The Hill. wanted to do a comedy festival in Dublin and I particularly liked the idea of doing one in the style of a mini rock festival. I’d been to various comedy festivals around the world and I nicked and knitted together the best elements from each of them. As well as the Iveagh Gardens, we populate the place with street entertainers, musicians, gourmet food stalls and really nice bars so it’s a really gorgeous place to step into in the heart of the city.
Why choose the Iveagh Gardens? Well the Iveagh Gardens is a dream venue that I always wanted to work in. I wasn’t sure we’d get into it but we have created a really successful music series and a really unique comedy festival in what is one of the crown jewels of Dublin. This year you have 85 comedians performing from all over the world. How do you mix and match the acts?
Over the past eight years there have been a lot of American comics that are big names over there but would have no profile in this part of the world so I see part of my gig is to introduce them to Irish audiences. We’ve had everyone from Louis CK to Neil Hamburger and now Louis is considered by many to be the best live comic on the planet. John Bishop has featured since we started and he’s a monstrous act now and the same with Milton Jones, who came in the first year and he’s grown. It’s about me trying to spot acts at the point that they are amazing and will deliver to the audience even though they are not huge names. The secret is to put a great international act on with an Irish household

Shades of Zuckerberg and Apple’s famed duo of Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs abound in the series. One aspect Judge believes remains constant, however, is the sort of people the sector attracts. ‘They fall into two categories,’ he says. ‘The tech billionaires, who are alpha male types – the Gavin Belson sorts – then all the others: the nerds, the geeks and the introverts. They tend to end up becoming loyal programmers rather than visionaries. Those guys don’t tend to get rich.’

You started as the booker for Vicar St but now you spend as much time working on comedy. Do you have any preference for one over the other? While I am a muso first and foremost but I absolutely love working in comedy. I love comedy as an art form and I love working with comedians. With comedians you tend to deal with that one person, as they often start off as self-managed, so you can develop a close personal relationship with them. As a result many of the comedians are personal friends of mine, particularly the Irish ones.
What highlights have you from your work in comedy? All the work I’ve done
with Tommy Tiernan. He’s done over 200 nights in Vicar Street, but the most incredible thing about Tommy is he’s an amazing artist. Tommy once called the comedy festival ‘a
flower in a car park’ which is the best compliment I’ve ever had. Only a poet like Tommy could come up with that.
You were probably the person most associated with Vicar Street in its early years. How did you end up with that job? I’m very proud of my involve-
ment with Vicar St because my mother was a Liberties girl so working in that area and making a success story of the venue has been amazing because not everybody gave it a chance initially when we opened our doors. I totally lucked into the job with Peter Aiken, He saw something in me that I didn’t see. Peter thought that I could come in and do some PR and help develop a relationship with Irish acts and it’s just all grown from there basically. barry Hartigan

cooper eager to climb back into meritocracy by pAuL kEAnE HE’s only mIssEd onE game but already Jonny Cooper realises he’s slipped down the pecking order and faces a battle to regain his dublin jersey. dublin’s regular corner-back was named to face meath in sunday’s leinster final but was replaced by mick Fitzsimons due to a hushed-up quad muscle injury. Cooper is in the second week of a two-week lay-off and doesn’t expect to engage in training again until this weekend. The setback comes at the worst possible time – high summer – though Fitzsimons would argue it has worked out well for him after a storming performance on sunday. now it would seem that Fitzsimons is well placed to remain in the team against whoever
they face in the August 9 All-Ireland quarter-finals. Cooper agreed that it is a ruthless business. ‘It is and it’s not enjoyable to watch from outside when you are not able to play a part,’ admitted Cooper. ‘But it’s all about the collective and once they are winning, it doesn’t really matter. ‘This is the way it works and the reality is that
‘We’re still striving for the full 70-minute performance’ he has the jersey now and deservedly so and it’s up to me and the other full-back line contenders to try and get one. ‘Everything is picked on merit and if Jim Gavin sees someone pushing hard, then they’ll get their chance and it’s up to the person in question to
prove it to him,’ Cooper added. Fitzsimons’s strong performance as cover for Cooper goes against the argument made last week by Ciaran Whelan that dublin have lots of forwards but may struggle to replace marquee defenders. Cooper agreed that things are shaping up well for the All-Ireland champions as they find themselves exactly half way through what they hope will be a successful six-game campaign. But he insists they can still get better. ‘We’re still striving for the full 70-minute performance,’ said the na Fianna man. ‘obviously we haven’t got it yet or we’ve only done it in small patches. Jim would be right in saying there’s a lot of room for improvement and a lot of errors to correct to have any chance. ‘That’s what we’re looking, that consistency of performance, if it’s at all possible.’

‘Where did we let it go wrong?’ Tipperary in an All-Ireland quarter-final in Thurles. Daly says they will have strong motivation to perform after
feeling they let their fans down at Croke Park when losing by double scores to Kilkenny earlier this month. The Clare man said they simply ‘just didn’t perform’ and were left with ‘desperate stuff’ in their heads after relinquishing their provincial title so tamely. ‘When you play a game like we did in the Leinster final, you
feel nothing only real shame – that you let down your fans and your family and all that,’ said Daly. ‘All of us. I’m not saying players, I’m saying management, everybody soul searches. (You’re asking) “Where did we let it go wrong”? ‘For the first week anyway, the two training sessions we did were just really purging ourselves and trying to get
back on track. ‘But, look, we played Limerick (in a challenge game) on Friday night and played fairly well, so in fairness to them now they’ve picked up the slack. ‘Really, until you go out on sunday at four o’clock, you can’t really know where you are.’ Paul schutte (back), Niall McMorrow (knee) and goalkeeper Gary Maguire (thumb) are Dublin’s chief injury concerns, though Mark schutte should be available after shoulder trouble.

Poyet’s confident of making Cats out of Borini and Alonso SUNDERLAND manager Gus Poyet is refusing to give up on summer targets Fabio Borini and Marcos Alonso despite a frustrating wait to secure them. The club appeared to receive a double set-back earlier this week when Borini’s agent Marco de Marchi indicated the player’s preference was to fight for his place at Liverpool, while a report in Italy suggested Fiorentina’s Alonso was no longer for sale. However, Poyet remains optimistic that deals can still be struck for two men who impressed during loan spells in the north east last season. On Borini, Poyet said: ‘It is not for me to explain but it is not just a question of Fabio wanting to come or not. ‘There are many things to look at and unfortunately, I cannot comment. There’s nothing new to report, but we are still hoping
top target: Borini to close the deal completely. ‘It’s up to Fabio. We have been clear, everything is fine, there’s no doubt about his connection with our club, and me and him get along fine, so there is no reason for it not to happen. ‘If Fabio does not come, it does not set us back, we move on – we are not a one-player team.’ And on Alonso, Poyet added: ‘It’s close, but not close enough. ‘We’re trying hard. It’s been a bit more difficult than I expected, but we’re not going to stop.’

biTing sAgA gOnE in RigHT DiREcTiOn, sAys Dubs cOOpER DUBlin defender Jonny Cooper says the biting saga that followed Sunday’s leinster final success took him by surprise and was ‘blown out of proportion’. Meath manager Mick O’Dowd alleged shortly after his team’s 16point defeat to Dublin that defender Mickey Burke was bitten by a rival player.
‘Dublin-Meath always has had that rivalry’
Cooper: Sometimes things can get blown out of proportion
«Daly’s shame – page 21
Eoghan O’Gara emerged as the player Burke tangled with, though a disciplinary probe found there was no evidence to pursue a case. it means O’Gara is clear to play for Dublin in their august 9 allireland quarter-final tie and corner-back Cooper feels justice has been done. ‘i was surprised you know, the way it came about and the way it all materialised in the press,’ said Cooper. ‘now all of a sudden it is gone and i think it has gone in the
right direction, the way it should have gone. ‘a lot of emphasis would be placed on discipline, on and off the pitch and in aspects of our game play. Jim (Gavin) makes that very clear and it is not within his psyche to have disciplinary issues. ‘i think, as a player, you can’t afford to get a black card and sit on the side line for too long, or whatever sort of sanction, because invariably someone else will take your place.’ Meath were asked to make a submission regarding the biting allegation to an official probe but didn’t push for punishment. That’s despite O’Dowd’s claims to the media on Sunday evening that he was ‘extremely disappointed’ with the incident. ‘Dublin-Meath always has that rivalry and edge and incidents happen in games and sometimes they are merited and sometimes they are blown out of proportion and that’s what i think happened in this situation,’ added Cooper.
World Cup in Russia is just ‘unimaginable’ FiFa have been urged to consider banning Russia from hosting the World Cup in 2018 in the wake of last week’s Malaysia airlines disaster. Pro-Russian separatists have been blamed for the shooting down of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine, with the loss of 298 lives. European leaders have discussed tougher sanctions on Russia, which is suspected of aiding the separatists, and German politicians have suggested stripping Russia of their status as World Cup hosts. ‘as long as president Vladimir Putin is not an active participant in the investigation and does not work against the separatists, the World Cup in Russia is unimaginable,’ said Peter Beuth, chairman of the conference of sports ministers in Germany. in Holland, which lost 193 lives, football officials said debate must wait until after yesterday’s day of mourning. The Dutch football association said it is aware a future World Cup in Russia will stir a lot of emotion among football lovers and victims’ relatives. ‘Standing still to remember our enormous loss is now the priority.’

by pAuL buTTnER As he did in Warsaw last week, Miroslav Radovic broke st Patrick’s Athletic hearts to turn their Champions League dream into a nightmare at Tallaght stadium last night. The Legia striker had scored the stoppagetime equaliser at the Pepsi Arena last week to deprive st Pat’s a memorable away win. Last night he scored an opportunist opening goal before adding a third as Legia showed their class. in between, Michal Zyro had already all but sealed Legia’s passage through to a third qualifying round meeting with Celtic with their second goal. But there was more misery for st Pat’s as they conceded a fourth goal from substitute Marek saganowksi while a Conan Byrne own goal completed Legia’s emphatic win and st Pat’s despair. Buoyed both by their display and result in
Poland, st Pat’s started assertively, with Christy Fagan and Killian Brennan having shots blocked away within two minutes and Brennan then getting a shot on target, straight at dusan Kuciak, two minutes later. But there were nerves at the back as captain Ger O’Brien’s unforced wayward pass gifted Legia their first sniff of goal on ten minutes. The ball was straight to visiting skipper ivica Vrdoljak who picked out Ondrej duda to get away a low shot Brendan Clarke did well to hold on to. A lapse in concentration would cost st Pat’s dearly on the 25-minute mark to put Legia ahead in the tie. The inchicore men switched off momentarily as they thought Greg Bolger had been fouled in midfield. Legia punished them clinically with Zyro putting Radovic in to shoot low to the corner of the net. st Pat’s responded and were almost level seven minutes later from their most incisive move of the match. Brennan slipped Keith Fahey in and his deflected shot was brilliantly touched out for a corner by Kuciak. Legia remained the better side into the second half, though. Tomasz Brzyski was nar-

rowly wide with a free kick before Legia rubberstamped their deserved victory on 69 minutes. Kucharczyk did well to get to the end line to pull back for Zyro, whose shot squirmed through Clarke to the corner of the net. duda then set up Radovic to add his second goal of
the night on 82 minutes before substitutes Jakub Kosecki got to the end line to cross for saganowski for a fourth, three minutes from time. Byrne headed a cross from Bryzski into his own net in the first minute of added time to compound st Pat’s misery.
