‘Change your laws’ Amend rules on abortion, UN tells Irish

15 die, 200 hurt in slaughter at Gaza Un school

A HUMAN rights watchdog has called on Ireland to revise its strict rules on abortion. The United Nations Human Rights Commission said limits on when pregnancy could be terminated were highly restrictive and lacked clarity on what was a real and substantive risk to a mother’s life. It wants the Constitution rewritten to allow for abortion and to deal humanely with cases of rape, incest, serious risks to the mother’s health and fatal foetal abnormality. The report dealt with 19 issues, including the failure to hold prompt independent inquiries into the Magdalene laundries, and treatment of victims of human trafficking. Irish Council of Civil Liberties director Mark Kelly said the report had identified ‘the ongoing failure in our law, policy and practice to respect the human rights, autonomy and bodily integrity of women’. The Pro-Life Campaign described the recent UN hearings on abortion in Geneva as a ‘charade’ and said its stance on abortion was ‘incredibly biased’.

Israel was strongly condemned last night after its tanks shelled a UN school in Gaza, killing at least 15 people – mostly children – and injuring 200 more. UN secretary general Ban-Ki Moon said he was ‘appalled’ by the attack on the compound in the northern town of Beit Hanoun, which was being used as a shelter for Palestinian refugees. ‘I strongly condemn this act. Many have been killed – including women and children, as well as UN staff,’ he said. laila al-shinbari said families had gathered outside the building expecting to be evacuated. ‘all of us sat in one place when suddenly four shells landed on our heads. Bodies were on the ground, there was blood and screams,’ she sobbed. ‘My son is dead and all my relatives are wounded including my other kids.’

Man who makes Junkyard artist fills capital city with fearsome metal giants MOST countries use smiling faces on tourist brochures to attract visitors. In Montenegro, they do things differently. The capital city Podgorica has been filled by fearsome robots. Transformers up to 14metres tall have been created by 22year-old sculptor Danilo Baletic. Like millions of other children, he grew up loving the TV cartoon series and is a huge fan of the big screen version. Unlike most of them, his father owns a scrapyard. The pair have spent the last two years creating seven of the giant robots, and his 25-ton ‘Megatron’ has just taken pride of place in the city square. The metal beasts form part of an exhibition called Transformers Defending Podgorica, and seem certain to deter any Magaluf-style misbehaviour among tourists in the town. ‘I chose Transformers because I’m a fan of movies about them. And then I could not stop,’ he said. He uses materials ranging from ‘needles to

by DOMINIC YEATMAN trucks’, and hopes to get hold of parts from tanks and planes for his next creations. A spokesman for the city’s tourist department said: ‘The basic concept of this exhibition is the revival and transformation of waste through a creative approach and work to create items that are useful.’ Baletic added: ‘They say that we should protect nature. That’s their real purpose, not just to look good for a Facebook photo.’ Although the sculptures have no moving parts, they may not be confined to their Balkan birthplace for long. ‘Their life has just begun,’ said Baletic. ‘If one day they guard Paris or New York as they have guarded Podgorica, then I will know that my plan has worked.’ Sadly, the robots may not be as powerful as they appear, and the city police have begun an investigation after one of them had its head stolen.

3yrs for rape Skelligwalker... is mise d’athair Dublin house prices up 25% fantasy texts to colleague A DUBLIN man who sent an ex-colleague an image of a dismembered doll as part of his ‘rape fantasy’ has been jailed for three years. The man, who cannot be named, told gardaí he never managed to ask the woman out before she moved jobs. He’d had an unsuccessful date with someone else before sending the victim a text depicting rape, mutilation and cannibalism. The 39-year-old pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to harassing the victim between August 2012 and July 2013 and sending a menacing text on June 6 and threatening to kill her on July 7, 2013. He has no previous convictions.

Employee ‘stole drugs to pay debt’ A FORMER employee at a pharmaceutical company has been jailed for one year for stealing the firm’s version of Rohypnol to offset a drug debt. Gardaí arrested Gary Byrne, 41, on his way from work and found the drugs in his car. The fatherof-three said they were to help pay off a €1,500 drug debt. He was rearrested after employers found he had been stealing over the previous two years. He then admitted his debt was €10,000. Byrne of Belcamp Gardens, Darndale, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to six charges of stealing tablets, between June 2010 and July 2011 and possession of tablets worth €2,546 on January 5, 2012.

Girl gets 3 months for city attacks A TROUBLED 17-year-old girl, who took part in a spate of vicious phone robberies in Dublin city-centre, has been detained for three months. Judge John O’Connor imposed a six-month detentionsupervision order. He told the girl, who is in care, she will have to comply with the Probation Service on her release. The Dublin Children’s Court heard there had been several adjournments to monitor her progress as she had continued to be troublesome in her care accommodation. In determining her sentence, the judge said he had taken into consideration her age at the time of the offences.

STAR Wars is on its way to Kerry. The Kerry’s Eye newspaper reported that part of Star Wars: Episode VII will be filmed on the Skellig islands, off the Iveragh Peninsula. The Office of Public Works said Skellig Michael ‘is being made available for a film production shoot on the island’. Filming in London and Abu Dhabi, Star Wars production was delayed earlier this year because star Harrison Ford broke his leg. The film, which also stars Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson, is slated for a December 2015 release.

HOuSE prices in Dublin are now rising at more than seven times the rate of the rest of the country. Latest figures reveal house prices in the capital are up almost 25 per cent in a year – and 3.1 per cent last month alone – compared with 2.8 per cent nationally. Meanwhile, analysts warn cash buyers are dominating house sales and a lack of suitable housing is squeezing out first-time buyers.

DNG put the average cost of a home in Dublin now at €349,000 – up €71,000 since the same time last year. Keith Lowe of DNG claims prices fell too far and too fast during the crash and it was inevitable they would rebound. Peter Stafford, of Property Industry Ireland, said 8,400 new homes will be completed this year, but 25,000 a year are needed to control prices and rents.

Red lights in window gave brothel away to landlord by DEcLAn bREnnAn

A LANDLORD found out a house he was renting was being used as a brothel when he called to inspect it and a women stuck her head out an upstairs window to tell him: ‘We’re closed.’ Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard a married Chinese couple advertised a massage service online and men could pay €20 for extra sexual services from a woman named as ‘Apple’. The brothel was uncovered when the landlord called to inspect the house in February 2012 and a woman stuck her head out of an upstairs window and told him they were closed. He also noticed red lights which the couple told him were Christmas lights. He was suspicious and contacted gardaí. Garda Christopher O’Leary said Qilong Chen earned some €400 a week from the money the prostitute paid him. He said there was no element of coercion or exploitation and that it was a mutually convenient arrangement for the three adults. Chen, 29, and his partner Xia Chen, 27, of Patrick’s Street, Newbridge, Co Kildare, pleaded guilty to knowingly permitting their premises at Alderpark Court, Tallaght, to be used for prostitution between April 2 and May 15, 2012. Judge Mary Ellen Ring suspended an 18-month sentence on both of them and fined Chen €500. Garda O’Leary told John Byrne BL that the masseuse was a 37-year-old woman who had arrived in Ireland in 2011 and later responded to a job ad in a Chinese newspaper. Chen said ‘Apple’ was living with the couple andher services did not involve full penetrative sex. She would keep some of the money herself and give some to him. He created the website and his wife answered the telephone.

Taxi driver gets 4yr ban Pub window smasher not after fare-evader assault guilty because of insanity A TAXI driver who ‘snapped’ and ran down a fare-evading passenger has been given a suspended sentence and disqualified from driving for four years. David Ryan, 56, had earlier admitted to dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to Eoin Daly at Carysfort Park, Blackrock, on April 7, 2011. In his victim impact report, Mr Daly said he accepts he was wrong to run away from the taxi. He suffered flashbacks after the incident and has spent €4,492 on physiotherapy after suffering

fractures to his ankle in the attack. The court had heard Ryan, formerly of Glenfield Park, Clondalkin, picked up Mr Daly and another passenger at around 3am and drove them to the Carysfort Park area. After the two men ran from the taxi without paying the fare, Ryan ‘snapped’ and drove after them, onto a footpath and across the park. Judge Patricia Ryan accepted that Ryan had been under great financial stress at the time and noted the driving ban will affect his ability to work.

A MAN who smashed 40 windows in a pub and off-licence while he was suffering from a form of psychosis has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. The jury took less than 15 minutes to return the verdict on Paul Murray after hearing uncontested evidence that he was not aware or in control of what he was doing at the time. The case was put back until next Thursday while a report is prepared on Mr Murray’s current mental state, as mandated by legislation. The jury heard from Dr Stephen Monks, based at the Central Mental Hospital, that

Mr Murray suffers from a severe form of epilepsy, which can lead to episodes of psychosis. During the trial, Garda Francis Chaney told the court Mr Murray, 30, of Coultry Terrace, Ballymun, was having a pint in the Swiss Cottage pub, Santry, on December 30, 2012, where he was seen talking to himself and ripping bank notes into small pieces, before going outside and throwing the pieces in the air. Later he went outside, got a wooden stick and started smashing the windows of the premises and hit a car, the court was told.

Cluckin’ dressed as lamb by ED CARTy A FOOD fraud investigation has found lamb from takeaways tainted with beef and chicken DNA. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), which exposed the horse meat scandal last year, revealed seven out of 20 meals sampled from fast-food joints in Dublin were contaminated. No horse meat, goat, pig or turkey DNA was found in any sample. But the food safety chiefs said that six lamb kebabs from takeaways were in fact more than 60 per cent chicken and from five to 30 per cent beef. The FSAI report survey found only three of the six had any lamb but the levels were as low as between one per cent and five per cent. The agency said only one of the ten lamb dishes sampled – minced meat for lamb skewers and described on the menu as ‘lamb’ – contained more than 60 per cent beef and more than 30 per cent lamb. Prof Alan Reilly, FSAI chief execu-

n A TEENAGER out for a meal with his friends got a shock when he opened a cold McDonald’s chicken burger and found someone had taken a bite out of it. Then Lovis Gaertner, 18, discovered the snack had earlier been served to his friend Andrina Lehrer, 21, who had taken a bite, but handed it back complaining it was cold. Ms Lehrer said: ‘I can’t believe they put it back on sale again.’ McDonald’s confirmed a member of staff at the branch in Arbon, Switzerland, made a mistake and should have thrown the burger in the bin. tive, said the issue was not safety but misleading consumers about the food they are eating. ‘When you order a lamb kebab, you expect to get a lamb kebab and not a beef and chicken kebab,’ he said. ‘Incorrectly listing meat products on a menu or menu board, whether inadvertently or by design, is an unacceptable infringement of the labelling legislation.’ Prof Kelly said the FSAI will not hesitate to take action. The takeaways investigated and found to be selling tainted food have not been named.

A MOTHER-of-two who stole over €8,000 from her employer to pay the bills has been sentenced to three years in prison, with two suspended. Garda Paul Kelly told the court that when a credit card ordered for a UK-based employee of AB Mauri Ltd failed to arrive at the Stillorgan office, it was found that €8,597.81 had been used on the card, taken out in 13 ATM withdrawals. Judge Mary Ellen Ring said while it was a ‘difficult’ case, Pauline Doyle, 57, of Treesdale, Mount Merrion, had ‘taken the easy way out’.

Ireland’s vote abstention ‘cowardly’ IrelAnd’s refusal to support a United nations inquiry into allegations of war crimes in Gaza is a dereliction of the state’s humanitarian history, it has been claimed. Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan defended the decision to abstain from a resolution on the deaths of hundreds of civilians claiming it was too narrow. Mr Flanagan met Palestinian ambassador Ahmed Abdelrazek in dublin in the wake of the vote, although officials said the meeting had been planned for over a week. Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin and foreign affairs spokesman Brendan smith questioned ‘what level of atrocity is needed before we say stop’, while sinn Féin president Gerry Adams said the abstention was a shameful act of political cowardice. The Palestinian death toll in the conflict is reported to have passed 700.

Books, cushions and other belongings were scattered about the courtyard in the aftermath of the explosion. In one corner, a sandal with a yellow flower lay next to a puddle of blood. UN spokesman Chris Gunness said the tank assault had happened despite Israel having previously been given ‘precise coordinates’ of the site. The Israeli military said it was already reviewing the incident but it accused Hamas of firing rockets in the area and from locations near schools and hospitals as the

finger-pointing continued. Israel insists it is doing its utmost to prevent civilian casualties but Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum described it as a ‘massacre’. The attack came as caches of rockets belonging to Palestinian militants were found in two empty schools yesterday, a discovery ‘strongly condemned’ by the UN. Meanwhile, the US again appealed for an end to the violence. State department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the attack ‘underscores the need to end the violence and to achieve a sustainable cease-fire and enduring resolution to the crisis in Gaza as soon as possible.’

And after French foreign minister Laurent Fabius conceded the plane, carrying 51 of his compatriots, had ‘probably crashed’, Mali’s president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita confirmed relatives’ worst fears. ‘I have just been informed that the wreckage has been found between Aguelhoc and Kidal,’

IT’S the ‘mummy porn’ that got everyone in a hot flush – but the Fifty Shades Of Grey film has already been dubbed Fifty Shades Of Tame after the trailer failed to get pulses racing. HE already has a string of exes, including actresses, TV presenters and models, but now it seems Italian playboy Tommy Chiabra has set his sights on Selena Gomez. The yachting millionaire, who was last linked to Gossip Girl star Jessica Szohr, was photographed with Selena and her friend Cara Delevingne aboard a luxury vessel which he is believed to have rented for the occasion in St Tropez. Selena, who has her own famous ex in the form of troubled singer Justin Bieber, was spotted snuggling close to Tommy on a jetski, frolicking in the sun and looking very cosy on deck. Although it has not been confirmed, their behaviour has sparked speculation the pair have started a romance. Tommy is not a famous face on our shores but the 28-year-old has spent years rubbing shoulders with Europe’s rich and famous, including actors Adrien Brody and Jason Statham. Fluent in four languages, he started his superyacht brokering and catering business in 2011, a year after graduating a school for public relations, advertising and applied communication.

It now has offices in a number of glamorous places, including the Caribbean, Miami and Monte Carlo. Tommy’s previous love link Jessica Szohr, a friend of Gomez, was seen only a month ago sharing a steamy swim in a hotel in the Italian town of Portofino with Chiabra. But, judging by Jessica’s tweet yesterday only hours after the photographs were published of her ex with Selena, they won’t be on good terms again any time soon. The 29-year-old posted a photograph of a quote: ‘You want to come in my life, the door is open. You want to get out of my life, the door is open. Just one request. Don’t stand at the door, you’re blocking the traffic.’ Selena, on the other hand, was ecstatic, writing on Instagram: ‘Thank you SO much for my birthday wishes – this has been the BEST birthday yet! THANK YOU!!!!’

LTON JOHN is set to lift the lid on his battle with drugs after handing over a secret collection of rehab diaries to film bosses. The 67-year-old provided details of his personal hell to help actor Tom Hardy, 36, cover his journey from ‘birth to rehab’ in the new flick about his life. Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall has been tasked with making the new biopic and said Sir Elton had left him to it after handing over the private journals. He said: ‘One day, he took me to his house and opened a safe and he had all his private diaries that nobody had seen from when he was in

rehab and left me there to read all this stuff. ‘But he’s never commented once on the script, he hasn’t interfered at all.’ Elton cleaned up in rehab in the 1990s but said his life was ‘tragic’ as cocaine and booze took him to the brink of death before he got help. The singer once said: ‘I would have an epileptic seizure and turn blue and people would find me on the floor and put me to bed and then 40 minutes later I’d be snorting another line.’ But despite Elton’s dark days, Hall revealed the Crocodile Rock singer’s hits will lift the mood. He told BBC Radio 4’s Front Row: ‘It’s a really great project to have all that music to use.’

Double killer has two-hour execution on US death row A DEATH row murderer took two hours to die and gasped for 90 minutes during his execution – reigniting the debate on capital punishment in the US. Joseph Rudolph Wood’s death took so long, his lawyers had the time to file an emergency appeal while he was dying. ‘He has been gasping and snorting for more than an hour,’ they told the court in a plea for his execution to be suspended. ‘He is still alive.’ The 55-year-old gasped more than 600 times after sedatives and painkillers were pumped into his veins. An hour-and-ahalf later, his breathing slowed as a deacon said a prayer while holding a rosary. Defence lawyer Dale Baich branded his client’s killing as botched – and claimed it only should have taken ten minutes. But the Department of Corrections in Arizona disagreed. Charles Ryan replied: ‘I conferred and collaborated with our IV team members and was assured unequivocally that the inmate was comatose and never in pain or distress.’ This is the third prolonged

by DANIEL BINNS execution this year in the US. During one in Ohio, an inmate gasped in a similar fashion for half an hour. Meanwhile, in Oklahoma, an inmate died of a heart attack after prison officers halted his execution because the drugs weren’t being administered properly. Mr Baich added: ‘Arizona appears to have joined several other states responsible for an entirely preventable horror – a bungled execution.’ Wood (pictured) committed a double murder in 1989. The families of his victims said they had no problem with the way that the execution was carried out. Richard Brown, the brother-in-law of Debbie Deitz, said: ‘This man conducted a horrific murder and you guys are going, “Let’s worry about the drugs”. Why didn’t they give him a bullet?’ Prof Deborah Denno, of Fornham Law School, added: ‘Every time such a botch happens, it leads to questioning the death penalty more and more.’

He added that – with 26billion internet-connected devices expected to be in use by 2020 – the infrastructure of the web will need a major upgrade to cope with demand.

Lighting up the darkness THEATRE REVIEW NIRBHAYA HHHHH

s

outh African playwright Yaël Farber and Bollywood actress Poorna Jagannathan were so moved by the story of medical student Jyoti Singh Pandey, savagely gang-raped and murdered on a bus in Delhi in 2012, that they decided to create a stage show highlighting the prevalence of sexual violence against women in India. The title of their gut-wrenching play, Nirbhaya, comes from the Hindi for ‘fearless one’ (the pseudonym by which Jyoti became known in the media) and features the real-life testimonies of victims of sexual violence, told by the survivors. While the piece is beautifully and sensitively devised by Farber with dream-like imagery drawn from Indian ritual, Nirbhaya doesn’t shy away from the horrors inflicted upon its performers. We hear from Sapna Bhavnani who was dubbed a ‘whore’ so many times in childhood that she became inured to the epithet; having moved from Bombay to Chicago, Sapna explains how she was subjected to a brutal gang-rape while returning home from a nightclub. The testimony of Sneha Jawale, whose husband attempted to murder her by dousing her with kerosene and setting her alight, is particularly difficult to listen to, particularly when she explains how she still searches the faces of men she passes in the street in the hope of happening upon the son taken from her some 15 years earlier. Ital & Aurora Halal Two of electronic music’s most individualistic artists make their way to Dublin this weekend. Aurora Halal is a sound and video artist who also organises parties in New York. She has just released her debut solo EP on the Mutual Dreaming label, a hazy amalgamation of underground electronic grooves. Halal is joined at the Grand Social by Ital. Inhabiting the same sound spectrum as Halal, Ital has put out his psychedelic house and techno for imprints like Mike Paradinas’ label – which has released two artist albums by him – as well as EPs for Workshop, 100% Silk and his own Lovers’ Rock imprint. Both artists will play live and DJ at this event – get ready to be taken on a journey to electronic music’s deepest corners. Tonight, U:Mack & Hidden Agenda, The Grand Social, 35 Lower Liffey Street, D1, 11.30pm, €8 to €10.

Nhar Despite rising to prominence during the minimal house boom, Swiss producer Nhar – aka Bernhard Siefert – has gone his own way. Releasing on labels like Plak and Ripperton’s Perspective, Siefert brought menace and experimentation to his stripped-back club tracks. Now signed to Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondent label, he has moved in a different direction, with his latest releases focusing on melodies and warm, human flourishes. To experience Nhar’s new sound, check out his live set this weekend. Tomorrow, The Fuzz, The Hub, Eustace Street, Temple Bar D2, 10pm, €10.

Google a bit forgetful on the right to be forgotten by juLiA fiORETTi GOOGLE’S handling of ‘right to be forgotten’ requests from European citizens came under fire from privacy watchdogs yesterday, after the search engine limited the removal of web links to European sites only. European data protection officials are meeting representatives of Google, Microsoft, which operates the Bing search engine, and Yahoo to discuss the implementation of the landmark ruling from Europe’s top court upholding people’s right to request outdated links be removed from web search results. Regulators can take Google to court if it refuses to meet their demands, as happened in Spain where the ‘right to be forgotten’ ruling originated. Under particular scrutiny is Google’s decision to only remove results from its European search engines, such as google.co.uk, meaning the hidden information can be accessed by switching to google.com. Experts have said this effectively defeats the purpose of the ruling, which gives people the right to ask search engines to stop links deemed ‘inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant, or excessive’ from appearing in searches for their name. Another issue likely to be raised is Google’s decision to notify the owners of the websites that have been removed from search results. This sparked controversy three weeks ago when Google removed links to an article by a BBC journalist about an exWall Street banker and links to stories in The Guardian newspaper. The stories’ authors promptly wrote about the removal. Google reinstated some links to the Guardian articles.

For six years, the St Brigid’s man provided back-up to regular goalkeeper Gary Maguire and became a near-forgotten man of Dublin hurling. As Maguire grew stronger and better each season, even picking up an All-Star award, Nolan’s chances of grabbing the number one jersey grew slimmer. Maguire’s ill-fortune this summer turned out to be Nolan’s gain, however, and the deputy stepped up for the Leinster semi-final and final after a thumb injury to Maguire. So far, he has leaked just one goal and though Dublin were crushed by Kilkenny in the Leinster final, he kept a clean sheet and was even named Man of the Match. It remains to be seen if he holds on to his jersey for Sunday’s AllIreland quarter-final against Tipperary but, whatever happens, it’s already been a breakthrough season. by jON HARvEY

Frank Lampard had no hesitation in signing a two-year contract with new York City FC to move to major League Soccer. The 36-year-old was sought after all over the world after leaving Chelsea at the end of last term following 13 seasons and a club record 211 goals. The midfielder becomes the fourth player to join the mLS’ 20th expansion franchise, and the second major summer signing following the arrival of david Villa from atletico madrid. despite joining a new club in a stillemerging league, Lampard insisted the move was not a gamble. ‘What professional move doesn’t have risk with it?’ Lampard said. ‘It’s not a risk. It’s a challenge. I can be in the middle of that challenge. ‘I want to make new York City a team that new Yorkers are proud of. and I will do my best to do that.’

Taking flight: Montero

Busy Swans add Montero to their ranks SwAnSEA have announced the signing of Ecuador international Jefferson Montero from Mexican top-flight club Morelia. The 24-year-old winger, who started all three of Ecuador’s world Cup group games, has agreed a four-year deal. Montero trained with his new team-mates yesterday after passing a medical and has signed for an undisclosed fee.

‘The move’s not a risk, it’s a real challenge ’ Lampard, who won every club trophy on offer with Chelsea, added: ‘Why not choose new York City? It’s a very exciting challenge for me in life terms. I’ve seen the vision, a real long-term plan and I wanted to be part of that. I want to test myself, I want to carry on challenging myself, I want to be that leader, and not just on the pitch, but someone off the pitch. ‘I had a fantastic 13 years at Chelsea, I can look back at that with immense pride. (But) it was a good time for myself and Chelsea that I moved on.’ Lampard made 649 appearances for Chelsea since signing from West Ham in 2001. He has played 106 times for England, scoring 29 goals. new York City FC sporting director Claudio reyna said Lampard was ‘one of the greatest players over the last 15 years’ and ‘ticked all the boxes’ in terms of a signing.

Hard graft will end Bohs home voodoo for Heary UnfORTUnATE not to have won at Turner’s Cross in April, Bohemians’ boss Owen Heary knows his players have the right mentality to finally get their first league win at Dalymount Park when his side meets Cork City again in Phibsborough tonight. Despite that home hoodoo, Bohemians are in good form, unbeaten in five games, a run of results Heary puts down to having a regular starting 11 – and plain hard graft. ‘It’s down to a settled team alright, but its also down to the fact that everyone is working

airtricity league hard in training,’ said Heary (pictured). ‘You can see their fitness level is good, they’re starting to get into a bit of a rhythm. It’s down to the players – they’re the ones working hard in training and off the pitch.’ The visit of Cork is something Heary wants his players to relish as they look to finally end that shocking home record. ‘It’s unfortunate we haven’t got that little bit of luck at home,’ said Heary. ‘Lots of people who

watched the Pat’s game said we deserved to win, the penalty against Athlone, we’ve been unlucky. ‘But at least we’ve been picking up points as well as getting results away from home, and hopefully we can rectify that home form this week.’ Having played against him earlier in his career, Heary isn’t

surprise by John Caulfield’s Cork this season. ‘They’re like the Cork teams of old – strong, physical, but they’ve also got some very good players.’ Heary now wants a repeat of his side’s display in Cork in April – with the right result this time. ‘We should’ve won that game, we had great chances in the second half,’ he recalls of the 11 draw. ‘We matched them all over the pitch.’

He becomes Swansea’s sixth summer signing, following the additions of Bafetimbi Gomis, Marvin Emnes, Stephen Kingsley, Lukasz Fabianski and Gylfi Sigurdsson, who joined on wednesday. u MIDFIELDER Alejandro Pozuelo has left Swansea to join Primera Division side Rayo Vallecano for an undisclosed fee.

SUnDERLAnD boss Gus Poyet has admitted his chances of signing Fabio Borini are fading. The wearsdiders are trying to add to the early-summer captures of Costel Pantilimon, Billy Jones and Jordi Gomez, but his efforts to land Liverpool’s Borini and Fiorentina’s Marcos Alonso – both of whom played on loan with the Black Cats last term – are yet to bear fruit. Ahead of a trip to a Portugal training camp, Poyet said he hopes to have three new players by the weekend but asked about Borini he replied: ‘I think we need to be honest. The more time that goes past, it looks like we have less chance. Some people think the opposite – the more players Liverpool sign, then there is more chance. Let’s see who is right and wrong.’

McIlroy given blessing of 18-major legend Nicklaus

by DEREk DEnT Jack Nicklaus has told Rory Mcilroy he can become one of golf’s greatest ever players if he chooses to. The 25-year-old Northern irishman claimed his third major title at the weekend when he lifted the Open championship at Hoylake. That put him on a similar trajectory to those which saw Nicklaus himself and Tiger Woods, who is currently four shy of the older man’s record of 18 majors, surge to the forefront of the world game. asked if Mcilroy could emulate their feats, Nicklaus said: ‘He certainly, at his age, is on par to do that, and i would be very surprised if he doesn’t.

Nicklaus said: ‘What was important to me – and far more important to me – was my family, and being able to know my kids, know my kids as they grew up, spend time with them as they started doing their career, to start to do things with them. ‘Particularly my early 40s, i was still quite capable of playing golf, but i was only playing 11 or 12 tournaments a year. ‘Barbara and i celebrated our 54th wedding anniversary yesterday. DUTCH PROVE TOO GOOD FOR IRELAnD THE IRELAND Women’s Under-19 team lost 4-0 to the Netherlands in their European Championship semi final in Norway after a successful tournament in which they topped their group and beat the top three seeds along the way. Minister for Sport, Michael Ring, congratulated the team. saying: ‘The whole nation is proud of them and they are a great credit to us.’

Nolan looking only as far as Tipp

Goalkeeper Alan Nolan says Dublin are treating Sunday’s trip to Tipp as their All-Ireland hurling final. The Dubs have a second chance in the Championship after losing heavily to Kilkenny in the Leinster final earlier this month. They’re underdogs to beat Tipperary in their All-Ireland quarter-final tie for all kinds of reasons, not least of which is Dublin’s double scores provincial final loss to Kilkenny. But Leinster final Man of the Match Nolan (pictured) said

their backs are against the wall and insisted they’re determined to come out fighting. ‘Of course it is our final, you just can’t look past it,’ said Nolan. ‘Sure your season’s either done or you’re getting yourself set up for a semi-final. Either way, you’ve got to treat this as your last game of the year and come out fighting. Then you see where the result takes you. ‘Unfortunately we just didn’t turn up in the Leinster final. ‘ We were flat. I don’t know why. It was just disappointing. It was such a big occasion and we

didn’t turn up. When you train so hard and then that happens, it’s very disappointing. ‘But we’re delighted we’ve another chance now. We’re heading to Thurles with our backs to the wall and we can only come out fighting. And if we don’t, our season is over.’ Meanwhile, boss Anthony Daly has a big choice to make between Nolan and regular net minder Gary Maguire. Former All-Star Maguire missed the Leinster final with a thumb injury and Nolan took his chance well, earning the Man of the Match gong.
