A rental crisis for students STUDENTS looking for accommodation in Dublin this year are likely to face the toughest search in over a decade with rising rents and fewer available properties. The latest rental figures show a 17.2 per cent average year-on-year price increase for city centre lets. The number of available properties in the capital has decreased by a sixth in the same time period, with just 2,000 on offer on August 1. The study by daft.ie found almost 40 per cent fewer rental properties available across the country than this time last year. The average city centre rent is now €1,345 per month and rents in Dublin’s commuter belt counties have risen by ten per cent. In terms of the single lodger, the

Dublin 13 area saw the biggest price increase for a one-room rental, rocketing by 26 per cent to €380 a month. The most expensive place to rent a room is in Dublin 4, at €493 per month, with Blanchardstown, Castleknock and Tyrellstown regarded as the cheapest at €312. Meanwhile, those looking for a one-bedroom apartment on the south side of the city can expect to part with, on average, €986 per month. A northside equivalent will set you back just over €900. by ten and 14 per cent respectively. Trinity College Students’ Union president Domhnall McGlackenByrne said the property website’s findings represented a ‘source of alarm’ for prospective tenants. Report author Ronan Lyons said: ‘For students looking for accommodation, this academic year is likely to prove the toughest for a decade. ‘The imbalance between supply and demand is particularly acute in Dublin, where rents are closer to their 2007 peak than their lowest point in 2010.’ Meanwhile, the Union of Students in Ireland is today launching its new Accommodation and Finance Guide, which will be available for download from the USI website and students’ unions across the country.

Ready for a drenching: Justin Bieber steps up pictures: instagram/ruckas

Stars take ice bucket challenge STARS from Justin Bieber to Jennifer Lopez have been lining up to be drenched with freezing water, before nominating their celebrity friends to do the same. The ice bucket challenge is simple – donate to a charity for motor neurone disease, or suffer a soaking. However, one person to resist was Barack Obama, nominated by Robert Kennedy’s widow, Ethel. A spokesman said the president ‘appreciates Mrs Kennedy thinking of him’ – but added that his contribution would be ‘monetary’.

Small firms warned of rise of credit card scams

BUSINESSES are experiencing their highest-ever level of credit card fraud, while numbers of dishonest staff members have doubled, a new survey has revealed The Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association (Isme) is advising Irish businesses to be ‘more pro-active’ as company scams have ‘increased dramatically’. While 68 per cent of enterprises have been affected by scams in the last year, Isme’s survey also revealed that 82 per cent of businesses have been the target of computer-related crime attempts. However, ‘social engineering scams’ made by people, as opposed to computer systems, are hitting businesses hard in recent months. Isme chief executive Mark Fielding warned: ‘An elaborate lie or impersonation is used to establish legitimacy.’ Mr Fielding said that while scams affecting small to medium businesses are rising, ‘owner-managers need to keep themselves informed’ on how it can

While credit card fraud is up at 23 per cent, a jump from 18 per cent last year, fraud by staff has doubled, with six per cent of small firms affected. Spamming and phishing attempts are occurring more frequently than last year at 86 per cent and 61 per cent, respectively, while computer viruses are affecting businesses less, at 58 per cent, a dip from last year’s 63 per cent. HSE orders report on care of woman in abortion row by jOAnnE AHERn

Just crane stupid A crane is pictured after it fell into a house in Stuttgart, Germany. Police said the incident caused €100,000 worth of damage Picture: ePa

THE country’s top health official has ordered a report to ‘establish all of the facts’ surrounding the care given to a young foreign woman who was refused an abortion under the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act. In a statement last night, the HSE said it expects the report will be completed by the end of September and it will be published, subject to privacy restrictions. The decision taken by the clinicians involved will not be reviewed. It is understood that two psychiatrists on the three-person expert panel agreed the woman was suicidal, however, the baby was delivered prematurely via Caesarean section after the consultant obstetrician, the third member of the panel, said the foetus was viable. It is believed the woman was 23 to 25 weeks along when the baby was born but it has also been reported that she first asked for an abortion at eight weeks. The woman had initially re-

New referendum is needed, just not now: Labour minister Jan O’Sullivan fused to have a C-section and the HSE sought a care order in the High Court when she went on hunger strike. Earlier, Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan said she would like to see a referendum on repealing the eighth amendment to the Constitution, introduced in 1983 following a referendum, which puts the right to life of the unborn on an equal footing with that of the mother. However, she added that a new referendum will not happen under the current Government and that the current legislation is ‘all that is possible under the Constitution’.

The Labour Party TD added: ‘I personally would be concerned in particular about the issue where a mother has to carry a foetus that is not going to survive outside the womb.’ Meanwhile, the Master of the Rotunda, Sam Coulter-Smith, has called for a new abortion referendum. Speaking to Newstalk, he said: ‘I think we are mature enough as a society for us to be able to put into place legislation which enabled clinicians to be able to support women in whatever choices they decide to make in relation to these very difficult situations.’ The Pro Life Campaign has criticised as ‘obscene’ what it said was the way a number of Labour Party TDs are using the case to ‘whip up support for their agenda’. Spokeswoman Cora Sherlock added: ‘Instead of playing politics with this tragedy, we should all be focused on the best outcome for the mother and baby.’

Irish child drowns in Costa del Sol A TWO-year-old Irish boy has drowned on the Costa del Sol after falling into a neighbour’s swimming pool. The youngster’s ex-pat father is understood to have found his body floating in a neighbour’s swimming pool in Mijas Costa, near to the popular holiday resort of Fuengirola yesterday morning.

It is thought the tragic accident occurred after the child lost his balance after climbing on to a wall separating his family home from the property next door, which was empty at the time. The toddler’s body was taken from the scene around 2pm yesterday afternoon after a judge allowed undertakers to remove it.

Local Civil Guard officers have launched an investigation. A source said: ‘Everything is pointing towards this being the result of a tragic accident. The boy was Irish but he was not on holiday. His parents live in Spain. ‘The local police had been alerted to the fact he was missing moments before he was found.’

no stations Inner city stab Bonds reach on rail hitlist victim, 45, dies record lows IRISH Rail has denied newspaper reports over the weekend that three of Dublin’s least-used commuter train stations, serving Clondalkin, Adamstown and Kilcoole, are facing closure. A spokesman said that while the rail company is experiencing a ‘very difficult financial situation’, there is ‘no such thing as a shortlist’ of stations set to close. Irish Rail and the National Transport Authority are currently undertaking a full review of services and funding levels to enable future decision-making at the company. The newspaper reports ‘completely presuppose a course of action when it’s not there,’ added the spokesman.

A MAN critically injured in a late night stabbing in the north inner city died yesterday. The incident occurred at North Strand, Dublin 1, at approximately 10.45pm on Sunday when a 45-year-old man was assaulted by another male and left with a number of serious stab wounds. The injured man was taken to the Mater Hospital where his condition was first described as ‘critical’, but he later died as a result of his injuries. No arrests had been made last night and Gardaí were awaiting postmortem examination results.

THE rate Ireland pays to borrow money on world markets is at a record low after a ratings upgrade. The payout on the benchmark ten-year bonds fell below 1.97 per cent yesterday, lower than at any time during the economic boom, following the one-notch upgrade to A- by Fitch. Standard & Poor’s upgraded Ireland to A- in June. The improved credit profile reflects Ireland’s bailout exit last December and expectations the economy will grow more than three per cent this year. Ireland’s bond yield stayed above two per cent from 1994 to 2007. After the 2008 crash the yield soared above 14 per cent and Ireland was forced to request an EU-IMF bailout.

Brooklyn-born actor OMAR EPPS, 41, is a veteran of movies, tV, rap and technology. He stars in fantasy series Resurrection and is writing his own show

You’re in Atlanta filming the second series of Resurrection. Did you know it had legs? I

thought so, but didn’t know for sure. I definitely had a good feeling about it. I think people have responded to it because it’s not sci-fi, it’s not just supernatural – it’s just about these characters.

Describe the show in your own words... I’d say Resurrection is a family drama about what happens when ordinary people are faced with extraordinary circumstances. In our case, people who have passed on and are coming back to life.

But not in a zombie way… No,

it’s the complete opposite. These people return at the age they were when they passed. This boy pops up in China, and my character is a customs and immigration officer so he’s charged with bringing him back to social services. I drive him home and tell the parents, who are in their 60s, that I have their little boy, they tell me he died 30 years ago. But he’s still an eight-year-old kid.

Your character, Martin Bellamy, is very gentle, isn’t he? He’s a

watcher – the eyes of the audience. It’s like he’s on the couch with you.

We’re so used to badass, wisecracking, shoot-’em-up types, it’s nice to have someone like him… Yeah, it was really challenging.

I tried to construct the character to be the balance between logic and emotion. Hopefully I pulled it off but it was refreshing creatively to play that role.

Brad Pitt is the producer, isn’t he? Was that a factor in saying yes? Well, it’s his company Plan B,

but this is their first thing in TV, so they were cutting their teeth. They’ve been phenomenal, though.

You’re more known for TV shows such as ER and House than film, aren’t you? I think now, yeah. But I did a lot of films in the 1990s then went into television. I have two crowds: those who know me from television and those who know me from films. Now the lines are blurred in Hollywood. It’s not about film or TV – it’s all one thing.

You were one of the first to go from movies to TV. Were your

idea where I was going and one wrong train led to another and another and another. The harder I tried to get home, the farther away I seemed to go,’ she said. With no clue of her address, she was taken into care by the authorities but she said: ‘I never

gave up hope my mother and father would come and get me.’ The family were brought together when Ms Ai-wu’s daughter, Mei, contacted a missing persons website and tracked them down. Her mother, Ju Yeh, 70, said: ‘In my heart I never forgot my little girl.’

I did a lot of 1990s films but now the lines are blurred in Hollywood. It’s not about film or TV – it’s all one thing

movie actor friends saying: ‘Don’t do it’? Not necessarily. In the back of my mind, I always thought that if I did TV, I’d want to do a killer one-hour drama. But when I went to do House – I don’t even count ER – I thought: ‘Yeah, I want to do TV.’

Is it a different working experience? With a drama, you can be away for six or nine months but a film you can do it in three to six weeks. Except if it’s a Harry Potter movie, you could be away for years.

What’s it like to be a Brooklyn boy living in LA? Weird? Not any more. When I first went out there it was weird but the quality of life is amazing. I love home – the culture, the food, but my kids are in LA so that’s the main place.

You’ve invested in tech companies. What’s the next thing? It’s going to be about the

integration of things we use on a daily basis. You already have smart TVs, washing machines and refrigerators, but I think you’re going to see it in medicine. With medical records, there are lots of bits and pieces that can be consolidated down to a device that

could cut out about seven steps in the medical process.

Where does this love of technology come from? Aren’t creativity and technology different sides of the brain?

That’s interesting – I never thought about that. I’ve always been into tech and science and the universe and the planets. For me, it’s not a separation between the arts and tech. If you look at something like the iPod, it was created for music. There’s a natural marriage.

Do you still write poetry?

I haven’t in a while. I’ve written a couple of songs that I consider poetry, but all my writing focus has been on film and TV. I’m writing a show I just sold. We’re making the pilot right now but it’s top secret so, sorry, I can’t say anything.

The unnamed royal’s motorcade was targeted on a ring road in northern Paris by a masked gang brandishing Kalshnikovs. Police said the robbers seized a Mercedes van carrying the money and a quantity of ‘sensitive documents’. 3 more climbers die on Mont Blanc

FRANCE: Three climbers have fallen to their deaths from Mont Blanc. They were hit by a falling overhang of snow, which knocked out the guide, pulling those with him 800m over a ridge, it is believed. ‘It gave them no chance,’ said a police spokesman. The three bodies were found on Sunday, a day after the accident. Twenty people have died on the mountain range this season.

33,000 elephants a year ‘killed by ivory poachers’ AFRICAN elephants are being killed by ivory poachers at an unsustainable rate, a study suggests. More than 33,600 of the animals were killed each year between 2010 and 2012, it added. This puts the species’ existence under threat, the study by a team of US researchers reports. ‘Our analysis demonstrates the heavy toll illegal ivory trade is taking on African elephants, and suggests current off-take exceeds the intrinsic growth capacity of the species,’ they wrote. The price of ivory and increasing demand in China, where carved ornaments made from tusks are prized, is thought to be linked to the slaughter.

Britain won’t ‘put boots’ in Iraq DAVID Cameron is insisting Britain won’t get involved in ‘another Iraq war’ despite increased involvement of British forces in the country. The UK prime minister made the comments yesterday as it emerged British spy planes had begun intelligence-gathering missions. It follows reports that the SAS has been operating in the country while Britain has agreed to supply Kurdish fighters with military equipment.

Britain is believed to be assisting the US in its ‘targeted’ air strikes on Islamic State militants who have seized control of large swathes of the region, displacing about 1.5million people. But Mr Cameron said: ‘Britain is not going to get involved in another war in Iraq. We’re not going to be putting boots on the ground.’ Yesterday the US carried out fresh air strikes in the Mosul Dam area in support of Kurdish troops.

He’s a Vine one to laugh as Tim cleans up on joke by DAniEL binns

TIM VINE has made a clean sweep of the Edinburgh Fringe after his oneliner about a Hoover was voted the best wisecrack of this year’s event. The 47-year-old became the first comedian to scoop the giggle gong for a second time, receiving almost a fifth of a public vote organised by witty banter TV channel Dave. His winning effort was: ‘I decided to sell my Hoover... well it was just collecting dust.’ After claiming the comedy crown in 2010 with the joke ‘I’ve just been on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I’ll tell you what, never again’, Vine was runner-up for the next three years. After his latest victory, he said: ‘I’m a little bit surprised but very delighted. This is the second time I’ve won this award but I guess nobody loves a repeat more than Dave.’ Steve North, general manager of Dave, added: ‘Tim has once again proved he is king of the one-liners.’ Three women made it into the top ten this year – Bec Hill, Ria Lina and Felicity Ward.

Assange: I’ll be out of Ecuador embassy soon

AiLEEn DOnEGAn says politicians are again playing pass-the-parcel over the latest inevitable abortion crisis

E knew this was going to happen: Ireland’s ridiculously restrictive abortion laws are inhumane, treat women like vessels, and, in this case, babies like half-baked dinners. The news broke over the weekend that an alleged rape victim was refused an abortion in the first case to be tried by the controversial Protection Of Life During Pregnancy legislation. The young

11

that has us here in the first place. If Irish politics weren’t so entwined with the Church, then this latest suicidal mother wouldn’t be in this mess. We need to face up to the fact that last year’s Act is useless: while women, through no fault of their own, wait around for a panel of experts on pregnancy (how many in that room were men, I wonder) to disagree on abortion, women’s bodies and lives are put in harm’s way. Not to mention the baby’s life, in this specific instance. If abortion was dealt with properly when it was supposed to have been some 20 years ago, then Savita Halappanavar would not have died. And countless other women could have avoided the torment of having to carrying an unviable pregnancy, wanted or unwanted. Equality minister Aodhán Ó Riordáin said the next government has to be ‘brave enough’ to sort this out. He’s right because clearly this bunch is too afraid. The Protection Of Life During Pregnancy Act is not good enough for anyone: woman, child, rape victim, non-viable foetus and more. I guess we’ll just have to wait for the next brave cabinet.

Were rights of the baby respected in abortion controversy?

S

o Labour’s Ciara Conway believes that the current abortion controversy shows that women’s rights are ‘once again being trounced upon’. Perhaps she should spare a thought for the vulnerable baby lying in one of our hospitals right now, very almost aborted, but still delivered so early as to greatly increase his or her chances of serious disability and, even now, death. Were that baby’s rights respected? Is that baby’s very life and existence ‘wrong’ in the eyes of pro-choice politicians, or at least unworthy of mention? Turning your kitchen into party central

1-2-3-4: THE OnLy punCH RECIpE yOu’LL EvER nEED… We like very simple cocktails, and most times can’t even be bothered to make those. But if we have to make one, we always fall back on a version of this ‘no fail’ 1-2-3-4 punch. It’s easy, quick and simple – better yet, it always works.

IngREDIEnTs

The key to this recipe is to follow this simple rule: ‘one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak’.

Summer is ending, but before it does, host your own island party with these tips and recipes from Jamaican chef sisters Suzanne and Michelle Rousseau the Caribbean: they must never run out. Warm up your guests with a strong welcome drink: our 1-2-3-4 Punch (see right) is perfect for this. Caribbean Potluck: Modern Recipes From Our Family Kitchen by Suzanne and Michelle Rousseau is published by Kyle Books, €25.

CARIbbEAn CROsTInI Inspired by Italian antipasti platters, these crostini are brushed with a spicy herb oil, then heaped with your choice of topping. The herb oil is also great for dipping bread or flavouring pastas, so why not make a big batch?

IngREDIEnTs serves 12

ground black pepper ♦ toppings of your choice (see step 2) ♦ 3 baguettes, sliced on a diagonal

METHOD step 1: To make

250ml extra virgin olive oil ♦ 2 garlic cloves, smashed ♦ ½ tsp sliced Scotch bonnet chilli ♦ 2 sprigs of fresh thyme ♦ 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary (or 1 tbsp dried) ♦ sea salt and freshly

the herb oil, combine the oil, garlic, Scotch bonnet, thyme and rosemary. Season. Set aside for 30min; the longer it sits, the better it will taste, so if you’re making a big batch, you can refrigerate it for up to a week. step 2: Meanwhile, make your topping of choice. Here are some suggested toppings:

n Olives spiced with Scotch bonnet chilli n Smoked fish – try marlin, haddock or trout n Curried ackee fruit n Tomato, pepper and feta or soft goat’s cheese step 3: When you’re ready to assemble the crostini, preheat the oven to 180C. Brush the baguette slices with the herb oil and sprinkle with sea salt. Bake for 8-10min, until golden brown and crispy. Serve with the assorted toppings.

n the Caribbean, we have a unique style of entertaining. Our parties are notorious for great music, crazy dancing, an abundance of food and booze and incredibly happy vibes. If that sounds good to you and you want to try ‘keeping’ (Jamaican slang for hosting) a party, here is a list of simple guidelines that we always follow: n never over-plan: last-minute fêtes (parties) are always the best. n We love party-crashers – they bring new energy to a party and make it really swing. But, as a general rule, they should be friends of friends. The more the merrier. n Keep it simple. Focus on the important elements: great music, easy food, plenty of drink, lots of dancing. n For a large fête, ditch the chairs and dining tables – even if you’re serving food. We eat standing because we are usually dancing at the same time. n Invite that one group of people who love to dance even though they aren’t your best friends. In the Caribbean we have ‘fêting friends’ who we only see when we are out but who are great fun at a party. n Keep the alcohol and food flowing. The drinks and party food don’t have to be expensive but we have a rule in

So, here’s an example of how it could work in practice: 240ml lemon juice ♦ 420g brown sugar or honey, simple syrup or agave ♦ 700ml white rum, red rum or vodka ♦ 950ml water or any chaser, such as soda or juice.

METHOD

Mix all the ingredients in a pitcher, pour into your glass of choice, settle back (preferably on a lounge chair) and sip away. Chill and serve over ice with a lime or orange garnish.

The only edible portion is the yellow arilli that surrounds the always toxic black seeds of the fruit. Luckily for us ackee comes tinned and can be used in the traditional dish – ackee and salt fish.

The recipe: ackee and salt fish

This delightful, colourful national dish of Jamaica really makes a great breakfast when it’s served with Bakes (Jamaican breads). The

delicate texture of the mild ackees resembles scrambled eggs and creates the perfect balance to the strong flavour of the dried cod.

IngREDIEnTs (serves 4-6)

450g salt fish, soaked ♦ drained and flaked ♦ 2 tbsp vegetable oil ♦ 1 onion, finely sliced ♦ 2 garlic cloves ♦ ½ red pepper (bell pepper), diced ♦ ½ green pepper (bell pepper) diced ♦

2 ttomatoes, chopped ♦ 2 spring onions spr (scallions), (sc sliced ♦ 1 tsp slic thyme, finely th chopped ♦ ½ Scotch bonnet Sc chilli, sseeded and finel finely sliced ♦ 1 tsp slic demerara demer sugar ♦ 1 tsp West Indian ♦ We pepper sauc sauce ♦ 1 x 540g can of ackee ack ♦ ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce ♦ ½ tsp light soy sauce ♦ salt and black pepper

step 1 To prepare the salt fish,

soak it in a bowl of water for 24 hours, changing the water five or six times. Transfer the soaked fish to a saucepan, cover with water and then bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes until the fish is tender. Drain the fish, leave it to cool and then flake. step 2 Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onion, garlic and red and green peppers and sauté for about 5 minutes until softened. Add the tomatoes, spring onions, thyme, Scotch bonnet chilli and the sugar and continue to cook for a further 5 minutes until hot through, stirring often.

step 3 Add the salt fish and

season with salt, pepper and the pepper sauce. Then add the ackee (being careful not to break them as they are very delicate) and the Worcestershire and soy sauces. Serve in warmed bowls. Buy it from Eurasia supermarkets

MY MEAT WAGON HHHHI

I

had been watching for several weeks – with bated breath and eyes hungrier than Patrick Swayze’s – for this new smoke house in Smithfield to open. The eyecatching logo teased me, but the logs piled high in the windows blocked off any signs of progress, and more than once I was caught peeking through the shutters by staff doing trial runs. So when I finally got the chance to go, I was practically salivating at the thought of some tasty BBQ goodness. On a balmy Saturday evening, I walked in to find it bustling, with most of the ‘troughs’ and the coveted pig pen table taken, but luckily secured two seats before the evening rush really set in. Smithfield needs good eateries to keep the population of hipsters from here and next door Stoneybatter fed, and I was hoping this would not be a wasted addition to what is a thriving scene. I wasn’t disappointed. The décor was conducive to the fare – think redneck couture – with the corrugated iron walls adorned with olde time radios and miscellaneous hillbilly chic. On offer are dishes of beef, pig and chicken, in box, bap or board styles. I went for the beef board with sides of coleslaw and fries, and was awestruck by the sheer size of the dish – a whole cow rib (think Fred Flintstone’s dinner), with meat several inches thick on it, simply but splendidly cooked, complete with thick slices of brisket. My companion’s pig board was no less impressive, consisting of a pile of pulled pork lying beside the gourmand’s choice of pork belly, with sides of fries and beans. Though getting at the meat required a bit of work, we both found the flesh delicious, and while some people, myself included, sometimes don’t eat too much gristle and fat, for those who truly love meat, this is a treat – I watched one diner strip his dinner literally to the bone. The pork belly in particular was cooked superbly. done too quickly it can result in a spongy, sticky mess of fat, but this

was obviously cooked slowly (for 14 hours in a hickory smoker it turns out), the tender meat complemented expertly by the soft layer of skin on top. The sides were great – the coleslaw crisp, the fries a perfect accompaniment, but do yourself a favour and order the beans – they were, for me, the best thing on the menu; lovely, soft beans with little pieces of the burnt ends of meat infused throughout. This is obviously a labour of love for owners donal Cahill and Cian Mchugh (pictured below), and it feels like it when you are here, with friendly and efficient staff, and nice little touches throughout, from the mini jam jar glasses to the fitting background music. and if that’s not enough, the fries come in tiny shopping trolleys. BBQ and smokehouse joints may be popping up all over the city, but if the food is always like this, that can only be a good thing. Our meal, consisting of a beef board with two sides, a pork board with two sides, a glass of white wine and a craft beer, came to €41.40. Those who like to eat meat on the go, like hunters of old, will be pleased to hear they also do takeaways. My Meat Wagon, 6B Block A, Market Square, Smithfield D7, Tel: (01) 874 8172. @myMEATwagon

FOOD NEWS with Adam Hyland

AWARDS TIME Widely regarded as the Food Oscars for Ireland and the UK, Irish companies came away with a great haul of prizes this year at the Great Taste Awards, a competition organised by the UK Guild of Fine Food. Prepapared meal producers Ballymaguire Foods won five awards for the company’s private label lines produced for the Musgrave Group, which includes Supervalu, Centra, Aldi, Lidl and Tesco; while Bombay Pantry won Gold Great Taste Awards for three of its dishes. A €350,000 investment in ‘Gaynor’ – a state-of-the-art Italian Brambatti roaster – last year definitely paid dividends for coffee and tea company Robert Roberts. They were awarded a record haul of 17 golds for 13 coffee and tea blends, which will have pleased

master roaster Garath Scully (pictured below). Included in the winning products were four two-star gold accolades – which classes products as ‘faultless’ – for its Colombia Coffee, Fairtrade Luxury Tea, Vivaldi Espresso and Mocha Java. An additional nine products were awarded a one-star gold – ‘close to perfect’ – including Rainforest Alliance organic tea, Costa Rica coffee, and Decaf Black Tea. MEALS ON WHEELS KBC Bank Ireland has awarded €10,000 to social enterprise Food Cloud through its ‘Bright Ideas’ community support initiative. The group will now have an e-car for a year to redistribute surplus food to more than 40 charities in Dublin city, securing food donation deliveries for charities who find it harder to organise collections in the evenings and on weekends.

Plenty has already been said about Destiny, created by the same team as Halo, but it’s almost here and it arguably looks better on the PS4 on than any other platform. Not so quiet, man activity BREaK: The setting, food and activities at The Lodge At Ashford Castle will delight foreign tourists and Irish visitors alike, writes Alan Caulfield

T

o Mayo, where The Lodge at Ashford Castle sits on a hill with a view of Lough Corrib that would make John Hinde weep for a lifetime wasted. Before being taken in hand by boutique hotel group Red Carnation, the hotel used to trade as Lisloughrey Lodge, but it seems Google Maps hasn’t got the memo yet. No matter. one or two rustic wrong turns around the Galway-Mayo border and we’ve arrived at the lodge (and by ‘lodge’ of course I mean ‘enormous country pile with generous accommodation added’) which shares its extensive grounds and facilities with the better known Ashford Castle Hotel. We are greeted by Paula Carroll, the very voice of the estate, who insists that despite being late for our archery lesson such an undertaking cannot proceed with bellies empty, so a swift and delicious fruit crumble is had with coffee in the racing-green surrounds of the hotel’s Quays Bar, adorned with Warhol-esque renderings of silver screen actresses wondering where they’ve been all your life. Indeed, the Lodge is seemingly a hotbed of romance, with no fewer than seven couples among those working on the estate. Must be something in the air. And speaking of which, there are outdoor activities aplenty, including…

FALCONRY

It is difficult to convey the thrill of having a medium-sized bird of prey swoop, duck and dive through the trees before landing on your arm as if you’re best mates, then taking off again for another near-miss adventure with branches, tree stumps, small burrowing mammals and other members of your party. The School of Falconry (falconry.ie) on the estate is next door to Squire Danaher’s House from The Quiet Man (more of which later) and has several dozen birds of prey, including peregrine falcons, an enormous eagle owl (which aren’t that great at falconry, we are informed) and – the most numerous – Harris hawks from South America. We are introduced to the substantial but lightweight creatures Aztec (a pretty mellow character) and Chico (bit of a psycho, but calms down once the nosh arrives) by French expat Aurelie O’Sullivan (pictured with eagle owl), whose enthusiasm and knowledge of falconry and birds is infectious. There are goosebumps the first time one of the animals takes off and lands, almost magnetically, on the thick glove, to be rewarded with a little titbit of meat. Then we’re off through the forest for a mesmerising hour to follow the path the birds decide upon. Back at the school, we see pictures of the hawks as chicks, little balls of fluff you’d love to take home if you could keep them fed and had a large rural courtyard in which to house them. Packages are also available in conjunction with the hotel.

CORRIB CRUISE We take off from the ridiculously picturesque Lisloughrey Quay, where the Cong River enters Ireland’s largest lake, which supposedly has an island for every day of the year, some of the tiny islets inhabited by hardy single families. The vessel Isle Of Inisfree takes us to the lonely former monastic island of Inchagoill (Island of the Stranger), which has two ancient ruined churches and the mysterious standing stone of Lugnad (pictured). On the Corrib Cruises (corribcruises.com) boat, we are entertained by ively local accordion player and singer Martin Noone – who appeared in The Quiet Man and passes around a picture of him with the cast to prove it. Again, tourists must love this and we do too.

ARCHERY Turns out I’m no Legolas with a bow and arrow, despite the best efforts of instructor Feidhlim Diegnan during the hourlong group lesson. Most of my shots go skittering along the gravel, some not even making it into the undergrowth. It’s highly addictive though, and one of our number channels her inner Catniss Everdeen when balloons are attached to the targets to make things a bit more interesting. I think I’ve captured her balloonbursting moment of glory on video, and I tell her so, but it turns out I pressed the wrong button. Stupid technology.

Rural idyll: The Lodge at Ashford Castle

FOOD

A no-nonsense lunch or dinner can be had at the Quays bar, and on Sunday there’s a relaxing ‘jazz lunch’ in the Lodge’s piano gallery. Our first night we dined in Cullen’s, a thatched cottage within the estate decorated inside like a classy Irish pub, with boats and nets and other fishing paraphernalia attached to the ceiling. The Yanks must love this stuff, and we do too, the charming staff serving up hearty fare such as fish and chips, Peri Peri chicken and rib-eye steak. A painting of an old fishwife with lobsters for figurative hands provides a talking point. But the focus for fine diners must be Wilde’s restaurant in the Lodge itself, where chef Jonathan Keane gives pride of place to local, seasonal produce presented in a way that challenges and entertains. Dishes that shocked and amazed us included mussels in squid ink with liquorice, foie gras trifle, and the Mayo Atlantic sea spray lamb plate – including roast garlic and ‘sea spinach’. Jonathan and his team forage for some of the ingredients themselves, such as mushrooms and mussels, and he comes out of the kitchen during dessert to explain his philosophy of food and answer questions from eager diners. He responds to queries like a mechanic deciding how best to fix your car without charging you too much, his easy manner conveying the love of food that makes total sense of what we’ve been munching on for the evening.

All aquiver: Alan attempts to get to grips with the bow and arrow

CONG AND THE QUIET MAN When a Hollywood film crew arrived in the small Mayo village of Cong in 1951 with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, it must have been like aliens had landed. And they haven’t stopped talking about it since. Seemingly every second shop in the pretty village of Cong is named after the film – from The Quiet Man Café to The Quiet Man Launderette (don’t quote me on that one) – and its centrepiece is a bronze statue of Wayne carrying O’Hara across the threshold in one of the film’s many famous scenes. A pleasant place to go for a walk, a quiet pint (man) or a night out, all within a short distance of the Lodge by car. All activities and facilities in the castle are also available to guests at the Lodge, and various packages are on offer. There’s also a nine-hole golf course on the way. Other attractions within an hour-and-a-half’s drive include Galway City, Westport, Clifden, Knock, the Museum of Country Life, Kylemore Abbey and Connemara. Tel: 094 954 5400. wwwthelodgeac.com

In the steps of North’s golf giants GOLF BREAK: With Northern Ireland staking an ever-larger claim as the home of golf thanks to stars like Rory McIlroy, there are now more opportunities than ever for recreational players to sample a taste of professional golfers’ lives. By Gareth Makim

R

oyal Portrush was this year named the future host, potentially in 2019, of the open Championship and the famous Dunluce course, and to a lesser degree Portstewart, are the north coast layouts that are regularly spoken of in hushed tones and placed highly in top ten lists of the country’s finest courses. But just 20 minutes’ drive to the west is a less heralded 18-hole layout that offers every bit the classic links challenge, and at a fraction of the cost of its near neighbours. Castlerock Golf Club’s Mussenden course sits exposed on the Causeway coast, and on my visit the elements played their part in creating a truly sparkling test. The winds, in particular, often made the notion of par irrelevant as gusts were giving and taking away in equal measure. Two decent shots on the 470-yard par five left yours truly, the shortest of hitters, hole high to the right of

the green, while later efforts into the teeth of the wind left me feeling like Sisyphus rolling a mythical golf ball towards its target. But even without the addition of inclement weather, the course gives visitors plenty to think about, notably in the trio of roughly 200-yard par threes that leave little to no room for error,, especially into a headwind (including the wonderfully named leg o’Mutton, played over a burn and tight to a railway line). There are also several narrow landing zones off the tee and the obligatory ‘there’s probably no point looking for that’ links grass. For me, the best is saved for last though. The short par-4 dogleg 18th, which requires accuracy off an elevated tee (which provides some of the finest views on the course) to have any shot at the green as the fairway rises above you towards the clubhouse. Castlerock Golf Club, green fees from €90, www.castlerockgc.co.uk If tackling a links isn’t quite your thing but you

still long to test yourself like a pro, then the fabulous parkland at Galgorm Castle should hit the spot. Just a few kilometres from the town of Ballymena, it plays host for the second year running to the Northern Ireland open and the European Challenge Tour – one level below the main tour – at the end of this month, with the public having the chance to play the course in championship condition (and yes, that includes the championship tees), following the tournament’s conclusion on Monday, September 1 (€125 for a fourball). a relatively new course, completed in 1997, the par-72 layout is a real test, especially in the run-up to the NI open when it is set up for the pros and the rough shows its teeth, meaning there is a real premium placed on accuracy off the tee that rewards the solid and the straight. The short par-4 second, which is easily reachable for longer hitters but is surrounded on two sides by steep banks, is illustrative of the strategic challenges posed, with a variety of

blind shots and risk/reward holes around the course. Best of all, though, is the price, with green fees starting at a frankly ludicrous €31 for a course of this standard. Galgorm Castle hosts the Northern Ireland Open from August 28-31, tickets are free. Contact golf@galgormcastle.com or visit golf.galgormcastle.com. If it’s Rory or bust for those seeking a glimpse of the big-time, a new experience at Robinhall House on the outskirts of Belfast offers visitors the chance to quite literally walk in the footsteps of world No.1 McIlroy, now a four-times major champion after adding open and US PGa titles to his trophy cabinet this summer. The private estate was home to McIlroy from 2009 to 2013 and saw the construction of a golf facility tailor-made to the 25-year-old Holywood star’s practice needs. In addition to a putting green, driving range and short game area, there is a nine-hole experience that sees identikit holes to some of the great major courses, including St andrews, Pebble Beach, augusta and Congressional, the site of McIlroy’s 2011 US open victory. The two-hour experience costs €120. Visit www.robinhallhouse.com For more details of golf in Northern Ireland, visit www.discovernorthernireland.com/golfing.

was a disappointing day for Irish swimmers yesterday as all four failed to make it out of their heats at the European Swimming Championships in Berlin. Barry Murphy (pictured), who has high hopes for the 50m Breaststroke, warmed up with the 100m event, but could only finish third behind fellow Irishman Nicholas Quinn and ahead of Dan Sweeney, but none was quick enough to progress. Brendan Hyland finished seventh in the 50m Butterfly but will be confident of a better performance in the 200m later in the week, while Sycerika McMahon and Fiona Doyle will compete in the heats of the 100m breaststroke.

The flight delay only served to heighten the anticipation of the crowd, which surrounded the players as soon as they appeared in the arrivals hall.

‘This is a very tough moment for me’ with a wrist injury and has not played since his shock Wimbledon defeat to nick Kyrgios in July. The problem is a new one for nadal to deal with after long-running battles with his knees but it now means Andy Mur-

Wenger is not motivated by winning Euro millions by JOHN PAYNE

ARSENE WENGER will let others decide whether qualifying for the Champions League group stages for a 17th consecutive time would represent success at Arsenal. But the Gunners boss insists prestige rather than money are the main motivation going into tonight’s qualifying round, first leg against Besiktas. Arsenal arrived in Turkey last night in high spirits after Aaron Ramsey’s lastgasp goal got them off to a winning Premier League start against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Wenger, who ended his nine-year wait for a trophy by winning the FA Cup in May, has never hidden the significance he places on finishing in the top four. ‘You let people judge what you do. All I can do is do my best every day and accept the verdict. I’m in a public job, so I accept it,’ said Wenger. ‘In England the competition is al-

We finished fourth with 79 points last year but in the past have won the championship with 78. ‘That shows you the number of teams who can achieve big, big quality in England has increased. Six or seven can fight for the championship this year.’ Qualification for the group stages would bring Arsenal £7million in prize money, with each home game worth around £3m of match-day revenue. But despite splashing out on the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in the past year, Wenger maintains qualifying again for the group stages is not just about being able to sign top players. ‘It doesn’t affect too much my transfer policy,’ he said. ‘Financially it’s a big game but that’s not the most important thing. We want to compete at the top level and fight with the best in Europe. ‘That’s the point of this competition for us. We have always in the history at our club adapted to our finances.’

Edin down right path to another tilt at title

Edin DZEKO insists Manchester City will take nothing for granted in their defence of the Premier League title this season. A hard-fought 2-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday made it even more obvious to the Bosnia-Herzegovina striker there is no room for complacency. The 28-year-old said: ‘With five teams fighting for the title, it’s good to start with a win but we are not there [yet]. There are so many games to come and we have to prepare for the next one, for the big game against Liverpool [next Monday] to try to win at home. ‘We have brought in some great new players. Some of them still need time because it was the World Cup. We can still improve a lot. Each game, we can be better and just try to continue where we finished [at Newcastle].’ Dzeko (pictured) was a key figure in the win at St James’ Park. Despite not scoring himself, his clever back-heel allowed David Silva to fire City in front and Sergio Aguero sealed it late on. ‘We played very well. From the first minute, we were there like the manager wanted us to be, to try to press them high,’ added Dzeko, who is reportedly close to signing a new contract at the Etihad Stadium. ‘We didn’t score an early goal but it was the perfect time, five minutes before half-time. ‘We controlled the game, were definitely the better side and deserved this win.’

MARTYN WOOLFORD says boss Ian Holloway (pictured) deserves the credit for Millwall’s great start to the season. The Lions have won their first two Championship games and Woolford, who scored the winner in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Fulham, said: ‘It’s nearly all down to the manager. There have not been a lot of new faces but he is a bit of a perfectionist so we are looking at every little thing we can improve.’

by jAck fOx CHELSEA showed why many have tipped them to be crowned Premier League champions this season after a comfortable 3-1 victory over new boys Burnley at Turf Moor. Goals from £32million striker Diego Costa, Andre Schurrle and defender Branislav Ivanovic got the Blues’ campaign off to a flying start, despite falling behind to Scott Arfield’s 13th-minute opener. The result will be a tough lesson for Sean Dyche’s Clarets, who only returned to the top flight this season after a four-year absence. Before the game, Jose Mourinho declared he wanted to see his players fighting for their places after giving keeper Thibaut Courtois the nod over regular No.1 Petr Cech. ‘I’m so, so comfortable and feel so safe by having these two goalkeepers with us,’ said the Chelsea boss. ‘I hope he’ll [Cech] fight for his place and not sit in a comfortable chair and accept the position.’
