Red, you’re dead: Ginger racism rife MORE than nine in ten red-haired people have been the victims of bullying, according to a new Irish study. Findings from a worldwide survey indicate that people with ginger hair are seen as an easy and often socially acceptable target for insults. A worrying 92 per cent of male redheads who took part in the University College Cork research said they had suffered bullying at some stage. And the experience was little better for flame-haired women, with 87 per cent revealing they had been victimised. The findings of the research – which involved the survey of 1,742 people, 65 per cent of whom had red hair – will be presented at the fifth annual Irish Redhead Convention, which kicks off on Friday in Crosshaven, Co Cork. Kevin O’Regan, who conducted the research for his final-year Applied Psychology thesis at UCC, said the results prove that having red hair carries a significant risk of bullying.
Irish pub is top draw, but is it a stereotype?
by NicK BRAmhiLL By contrast, between just five and ten per cent of the non-redheads who participated in the study said they had been bullied because of their hair colour. O’Regan, 26, from Goleen in west Cork, himself a redhead, said: ‘It’s the one sector in society it’s still OK to laugh at. People with red hair are seen as acceptable targets, because they’re not one group and not a race. ‘If discrimination and hate crime laws were to include attacks motivated by a person’s hair colour that may go some way toward discouraging “gingerism”. ‘The long-term negative effects on mental health may be too significant for this problem to be ignored.’ Red hair is the rarest hair colour in the world, accounting for just 0.6 per cent of the world’s population. Scotland has the highest number of redheads per capita at 13 per cent, followed by Ireland at ten per cent. VISITING an authentic Irish pub is our number one tourist attraction – but it has been claimed our famous hospitality industry may ‘play into an embarrassing national stereotype’. A report by economist Tony Foley, The Contribution Of The Drinks Industry To Tourism, found the top reason for overseas visitors to come here was the Irish pub
experience (80 per cent) – 83 per cent said the best activity was ‘listening to Irish music in a pub’. The Guinness Storehouse was the country’s biggest fee-charging attraction, setting a record with more than 1.1million visitors in 2013. The Old Jameson Distillery was also in the top 20 with 267,800, with 90 per cent of these visitors from overseas. The tax take from

tourism in 2013 was €1.4billion and expenditure was €4.7bn. The Drinks Industry Group of Ireland hosted an event yesterday asking if our hospitality industry is a unique resource, or if it plays into an embarrassing stereotype. Event facilitator Kevin Rafter said: ‘The role of alcohol in Irish society is one that often plays out in the media.’

by AiDAn RADnEDgE YOU’RE hoping to catch a ray or two... then hundreds stream past. This photographer could barely believe his luck when he dived off the coast of Baja, Mexico. Eduardo Lopiz Negrete was even able to snatch a selfie with the mobula rays behind him. The fish, a smaller cousin of the manta ray, can reach five metres across and weigh up to 12 stone. Mr Negrete, 36, was on a trip helping to unhook sharks caught in fishing longlines. To get the shot he freedived 20m down. ‘There was a massive school of them,’ said Mr Negrete, from Mexico City. ‘The rays were moving quite fast and it was hard keeping up even from the surface.’

MELBOURNE has topped the ranking as the world’s most pleasant city to live in for the fourth year running. The Australian spot beat Vienna, Vancouver and Toronto in the list of 140 cities. Bottom was Damascus in war-torn Syria. The survey, by the Economist Intelligence Unit, also includes cities whose ‘liveability’ has declined most in the past five years. Russian cities St Petersburg and Moscow both slipped back while Kiev, capital of conflict-hit Ukraine, dropped 17.8 per cent and ranked 124th.

30 arrested as gardaí swoop on drug dealers
Kenny makes move to UTV Broadcaster Pat Kenny is to make his television comeback on UTV Ireland next year. In what will be seen as a major coup for the fledgling channel, the ex-RTÉ veteran will front a peak-time show. Mr Kenny said his slot on the new commercial station, created by British TV giant ITV, was ‘new territory’, adding: ‘Another leap, so to speak.’ Picture: PA
THIRTY people have been arrested in a wave of raids across Dublin targeting drug dealers. Operation Tempest is focused on the north inner city and follows a six-month undercover investigation, involving more than 100 gardaí. Some 46 properties were searched in the sweep against suspected dealers in selling heroin, cocaine and other illegal drugs. Chief Supt Patrick Leahy said the dozens of raids were a direct response to concerns flagged up by residents during door-to-door
inquiries by community officers since the start of the year. It is expected 45 suspects will face up to 100 charges as a result of the operation, which is continuing. Local officers in the northside are being backed up the Garda national drugs unit, the emergency response unit, the Garda air support unit and the Garda dog unit. Mr Leahy said the targets are lowlevel drug peddlers who are upsetting local residents. The suspects, all men in their 20s and 30s, are due in court tomorrow.
Asylum women ‘trapped by our abortion laws’ THE Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) has said it is ‘unacceptable’ that many asylum-seeking women face multiple barriers when they try to seek a safe abortion in Ireland and some have to continue with an unwanted pregnancy. The agency was responding to an interview in yesterday’s Irish Times with the young woman at the centre of the latest abortion controversy. She claimed she was raped and suicideal but decided against travelling to the UK for an abortion when she learned of the €1,500 cost. The woman, who is foreign, was later refused an abortion on the grounds of suicide risk under the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act and the baby was prematurely delivered at about 25 weeks via Caesarean section. She initially rejected the C-section option and the HSE secured a care order preventing her from starving herself when she went on hunger strike. The woman said she contacted the
by JOAnnE AHERn IFPA early in the pregnancy and thought her bid for an abortion was progressing, but by the time she made contact with the HSE she was too far gone. The IFPA said clients are given information on all options open to them and it ‘makes every effort to support clients in the option they choose’. RTÉ yesterday reported the two psychiatrists and an obstetrician on the panel insist the C-section was consented to by the woman and that she was in fact granted a ‘termination’ of the pregnancy in that it was ended when the baby was delivered by C-section. The director general of the HSE has commissioned an internal inquiry into the woman’s experience. It is expected to be completed by the end of next month and will be published, subject to privacy restrictions. The baby remains in an incubator and is understood to be doing well.

Ioan Lacatus, 31, of Hanover Street, Portadown, Co Armagh, and Samuil Covaci, 23, from Charles Street, also in Portadown, are each accused of 12 counts of people trafficking as well as 12 forced labour charges. The pair, from Romania, who deny the charges, were arrested as part of a major police operation which recovered 20 potential trafficking victims in Co Armagh last week. The 14 men and six women were also from Romania and ranged in age from 20 to 48. Both men will reappear in court via video link later this month.

Fled ebola patients return to centre
LibERiA: Suspected Ebola victims who fled into a slum when a holding facility was ransacked by looters have returned. The thieves stole potentially infected sheets and matresses from the centre in the capital, Monrovia, on Saturday. It is not clear where those items are, but 17 of the missing patients have since turned themselves in to a city hospital. They are being tested but may have helped spread the deadly virus. The latest official figures show 1,200 people have died from it since December.

Israel retaliates with 24 airstrikes on Gaza after Hamas launches ten rockets
Talks break down in Cairo AN EGYPTIAN effort to broker an end to the month-long war between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip appeared to collapse yesterday after Israel walked out on the talks in response to a barrage of Palestinian rocket fire. The Israeli walkout occurred just hours before a midnight deadline, leaving the fate of the negotiations in question and raising the possibility of a resumption of heavy fighting. The Israeli military said a total of ten rockets had fallen, including one that damaged a coffee shop in south-
ern Israel. Palestinian officials in Gaza reported more than two dozen Israeli airstrikes. At least 21 people, including 14 women and children, were wounded in a strike that hit a building housing the offices of Hamas’ Al Aqsa TV station in Gaza City. Israel’s civil defence authority, the Home Front Command, ordered authorities to reopen public bomb shelters within a 40km range of Gaza. ‘The Cairo talks were based on an agreed premise of a total cessation of hostilities,’ Israeli government
by jOsEf fEDERMAn
spokesman Mark Regev said. ‘When Hamas breaks the ceasefire, they also break the premise for the Cairo talks. Accordingly, the Israeli team has been called back as a result of today’s rocket fire.’ He would not say whether the team would return to Cairo, or whether
Israel would resume cease-fire talks. Egyptian security officials said Egypt was still pressing the two sides to agree on a ceasefire. The breakdown dealt a tough blow to nearly a week of Egyptian-led diplomacy meant to end the heaviest fighting between Israel and Hamas since the Islamic militant group seized control of Gaza in 2007.
In nearly a week of indirect talks, Egypt appears to have made little headway in resolving the differences. On Monday, it secured a 24-hour extension to a temporary truce to allow more time for a last-ditch attempt to reach a longer-term deal. Members of the Palestinian delegation said no progress had been made in yesterday’s talks.

Entitled A Message To America, it was circulating widely on social media last night, with a London accent clearly heard among the militants. The Sunni militants’ sweep through northern Iraq, bringing it close to Baghdad and in control of the second city, Mosul, drew the first US air strikes on the country since the end of the US occupation in 2011. Germany will decide this week whether to arm Iraqi Kurds against the group.
Iceland quakes raise concerns that volcano is about to erupt THOuSANdS of small intense earthquakes are rocking Iceland amid concerns that one of the country’s volcanoes may be close to erupting. Iceland has raised its aviation alert level for the risk of a possible volcanic eruption to orange – the second-most severe level. More than 100,000 flights were cancelled following the April 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokul, because volcanic ash in the atmosphere
is considered an aviation safety hazard. Some 3,000 earthquakes have been recorded since Saturday in Bardarbunga – a subglacial stratovolcano located under Iceland’s largest glacier. However, metrologists said no quakes above magnitude 3 have been recorded in the last 24 hours. Seismologists said yesterday that magma is moving, but it is travelling horizontally.

The 26-year-old decided to become the world’s first professional bridesmaid after taking on the duty for friends. ‘I’ve always loved weddings and I love being a part of them,’ she said. Jen gets guests dancing, helps write
speeches and even lifts the bride’s dress when she needs the loo. She was inundated with online requests from women who needed a stand-in. ‘I was pretty shocked – I thought people would think I was crazy but women seem to really like the idea,’ she said. However, the single New Yorker is on the look-out for Mr Right, and said: ‘I’m always trying to catch the bouquet.’

by niCOLE LE MARiE A FISHERMAN has been killed by a five-metre crocodile dubbed ‘Michael Jackson’ – with his wife hearing the screams as he was dragged to his death. The 57-year-old was casting on a notoriously croc-infested stretch of Australia’s Adelaide River when his line became snagged. As he waded into to release his hook, he was snatched by the albino-headed beast (pictured) and savaged. Supt Jo Foley, of the Northern Territory Police, said the fisherman’s wife hadn’t seen the attack but had heard ‘a scream and then turned around and saw a tail splashing in the water’. Rangers eventually tracked and shot the rare reptile, a popular attraction for sightseers on the ‘jumping croc’ boat tours where the

Motorists ‘weigh more’ than cyclists and commuters by ELLA pickOvER PEOPLE could lose up to half a stone if they did not drive to work and used public transport or actively commuted instead, research suggests. Experts have found that people who get the bus or train and those who walk or cycle into the office weigh less than those who get to work in private vehicles. The new study, published on thebmj.com, examined body mass index (BMI) scores of more than 15,000 commuters. The average BMI for men was 28 and the average for women was 27, with those with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 considered to be overweight. The researchers from University College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine found that, compared
with using private transport, people who travelled by public or active transport had significantly lower BMI scores. Men who commuted using public modes of transport or those who walked or cycled had BMI scores around one point lower than those who used private transport – equating to a difference in weight of 3kg,
or almost half a stone. Women who used public transport or actively made their way into the office had BMI scores around 0.7 points lower than those who drive to work – equating to a difference in weight of 2.5kg. The authors wrote: ‘Those who used active and public transport modes had a lower BMI and percentage body fat compared with those who used private transport.’ ‘A key finding from this study is that the effects observed for public transport were very similar in size and significance to those for walking or cycling to work,’ the report’s authors said. ‘Greater emphasis on encouraging a shift from private to public transport modes may plausibly have significant population health benefit and may be more acceptable to commuters.’

Rubber bands used to create sensors THE humble rubber band could soon revolutionise healthcare. Researchers at Trinity College Dublin and the University of Surrey have discovered a way of creating wearable sensors by adding graphene, a nanomaterial derived from pencil
lead 10,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair, to ordinary rubber bands which led to tiny movements such as breath and pulse being sensed. The discovery could be used to monitor blood glucose, blood pressure and respiration, and in
an early warning system for cot deaths in babies or sleep apnoea. Prof Jonathan Coleman, of Trinity College, said: ‘By implanting graphene into rubber, we are able to make it electrically conductive to develop a new type of sensor.’

Brian Fleming – A Sacrilegious Lesbian and Homosexual Parade ‘The story of my show, which completes my oneman trilogy at Dublin Fringe with director Raymond Keane, began in 2000, after I’d made the biggest drum in the world and wanted to bring it to New York. I asked the organisers of the St Patrick’s Day Parade on 5th Avenue but they wouldn’t have it because they don’t do floats. However, Irish LGBT groups, who were also excluded from the parade, along with leaders of the Irish community in Queens, had just started their own St Pat’s For All Parade. They couldn’t afford to bring over the drum, but they were delighted to have my band, De Jimbe, play our mix of African and Irish music, which resonated with their ethos of inclusion and diversity.
I’ve gone every year since and the story of the parade is incredible. There has been resistance to it from Catholic and right-wing groups, but gradually it’s become a cherished community event. This year Irish ministers, US Senators, the mayor of New York and, best of all, Panti Bliss attended the parade. Given the debate on homophobia that followed Panti’s speech at the Abbey, alongside the fact the referendum on marriage equality is taking place next year, the time feels right for this show. As a straight guy, travelling over to the parade from Ireland each year, I’ve had an outsider’s view from the inside – an excellent starting point.’ n A Sacrilegious Lesbian And Homosexual Parade runs at The New Theatre, Sep 9 to 13
Just The Lads – At Sea ‘Dublin Fringe is like a second home to us. It’s like being part of one big deranged family who get together once a year to cry, laugh and dance together. More than that, though, it’s a fantastic opportunity for a young company like us to take a risk and reach out to new audiences. At Sea began almost a year ago when co-director Darren Sinnott mentioned that his grandfather worked as a radio officer at sea. We were intrigued and avidly followed stories and tales of radio officers to find out more about this lost profession. We listened without knowing where it would lead and picked up Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man And The Sea, which inspired much of our early writing and strengthened our thematic concerns: memory and nostalgia, memory loss, loneliness, and redemption. We found ourselves constantly returning to the idea of the un-glorified heroism of old age and talked at length about our own grandparents, their lives and the challenges older generations face today. Alzheimer’s and related dementia affects approximately 38,000 people in Ireland but is rarely talked about. Above and beyond that, facing the fear and nostalgia of growing old is a universal experience neglected by mainstream media. With this as our cargo, we take you on a journey out to sea with two musicians and one performer who compose a mosaic of images, sounds and voices celebrating the waning memories of one old man.’

‘I began working on Tardigrade during my time as Dance Ireland’s associate artist in 2012. I was initially inspired by Bosch’s Garden Of Earthly Delights – a painting with so much detail I find I’m torn between taking it all in as a whole and concentrating on specifics. I love that I have that choice, and that’s kind of what I’m doing in this piece; creating several worlds in the same space and giving the audience the choice of how they take all that information in. I guess I don’t think of it as just a dance piece. There’s Michael Gallen’s original score, wild costumes by Emily Ní Bhroin (or no costume at all!), six singers, a string quartet and video projections by Luca Trufarelli. A lot is going on but it’s all in the detail. It’s mad but there’s method to it. I think it questions the very nature of what reality/normality is in a way that is beautiful and yet quite direct. So no better place to do all this than at Tiger Dublin Fringe. I’ve performed in shows at the Fringe a couple of times and I’ve always loved how it pushes boundaries and allows space for experimentation and enjoyment for artist and audience alike.’ n Philip Connaughton’s Tardigrade runs at Samuel Beckett Theatre from Sep 9 to 13

It’s a shame that the Grey’s Anatomy soapy melodrama keeps getting in the way of the supernatural stuff in this US drama, because it’s the hunky-doctor-hauntedby-dead-spirits side of things that raises the temperature here, and not the mushy subplot. Another Anna Friel movie, this one’s a romantic drama adapted from the Marian Keyes bestseller. Friel (above) plays Dubliner Claire, living quite happily in London with her boyfriend. That is, until he arrives at the hospital after she has given birth to tell her he’s leaving her. Out of options, a broken-hearted Claire heads home to the fair city and her rather dysfunctional family. Friel’s Dublin accent is woeful, but this offbeat TV movie, directed by When Brendan Met Trudy’s Kieron J Walsh, has its charms.
irreSiStible BBC1, 11.50pm
Psychological thriller of the type that ruled cinemas in the 1990s – although, surprisingly, this campy Australian stab at the genre came in 2006. Susan Sarandon plays a highly strung book illustrator who suspects her husband (Sam Neill) is having an affair with his assistant (Emily Blunt). Is the latter really a psycho, or is it all in Sarandon’s mind? Rye smiles all round as Sue Perkins uses her loaf and plaits herself into a puncrazed crust. Yes, it’s bread week in the Bake Off tent – not such a vicariously yummy experience for we viewers – and that means the remaining contenders’ technical skills will be tested to the limit by the demands of creating the perfect ciabatta. The showstopper proves exotic: a filled bread centre-piece has the bakers roaming the globe in search of inspiration.

This 1999 teen drama – an updated take on Dangerous Liaisons – is principally of interest today as a kitsch nostalgia-fest. Gaze on and wonder why it is that Reese Witherspoon was the only one of this bunch to forge a film career. The younger one makes me feel more alive and we have lots in common, whereas the older one is more sensible and easy to talk to about important things. Is there a rule that says girls approaching a certain age can’t date a younger fella or should we just choose the older man because they might actually want what we want, which is to settle down? A
Beware of broad brushstrokes. Just as not all women in their 20s want to ‘settle down’ – by which I assume you mean get married and have kids – not all men in their late 30s want to either. In my experience men’s default maturity setting is around 23 (which explains why OAP dads still refer to their friends as ‘the lads’), proving that age really is a number. As far as I can gather, the future happiness of yourself, your family and the world doesn’t depend on you selecting either suitor right now, so why not adopt the American notion of dating and continue seeing both of them? You are still young enough to keep kissing frogs, so go forth and enjoy.

Well, it’s her face, so, short of strapping on a Hannibal Lector mask while she’s under sedation, you can’t really. Ne morning Marie Phillips tried to pop a headache pill and found she couldn’t swallow. Then she tried some breakfast and found she couldn’t swallow that. Or lunch. Or dinner. ‘For three months the most I would manage each day was half a banana and a bit of mashed potato,’ the writer says. ‘every time I did swallow something I’d immediately panic about the next meal time.’ Phillips, 38, suspected it was a psychological rather than a physical issue, as she had suffered panic attacks all her life. ‘I just assumed I was going through a bad patch,’ she says. ‘But I’ve never before had eating problems and I wasn’t trying to lose weight. I just couldn’t swallow. At one point I was gagging on my own saliva.’ Ironically, she believes her problems stemmed from the success of her first novel, Gods Behaving Badly, a mischievously entertaining modern update of Greek mythology that garnered a large advance and became a bestseller. Yet after it was published in 2007, she struggled for four years to write another novel, and it knocked her self-esteem and sense of self, culminating in being unable even to eat. ‘I thought I needed to write a literary novel, the sort people take seriously,’ she says, ‘but I couldn’t do it. I kept trying and it kept not working. I thought: “Oh God, I’m a writer and I can’t write.” It was terrifying. It felt like a very public failure. At the same time all my friends were getting married and I wasn’t. I had that tune that went: “Can’t get a job/Can’t get a man” on constant replay in my head.’ Phillips’ weight dropped so sig-
A sev severe case ase of writ writer’s ’s block made author Marie Phillips face up to her mental health issues and get her life back, says Claire Allfree nificantly that her mother suggested she go to hospital. She agreed and checked into a psychiatric unit. ‘It sounds dramatic but I realised I could be in danger of dying,’ she says. ‘The funny thing was, the admission nurse said: “Marie Phillips? Didn’t you write Gods Behaving Badly?” I thought: “For crying out loud, not now!”’ Today Phillips is happy, healthy, living in Amsterdam and promoting her second novel, The Table Of Less Valued Knights. Once again it’s a comic treat – a hugely entertaining subversion of the Arthurian legends that mixes flights of fancy with dry, subversive humour. Phillips found the courage to write it after collaborating with writer Robert Hudson on the BBC Radio 4 sketch show Warhorses Of Letters, an epistolary love affair between the horses of Wellington and Napoleon, starring Stephen Fry. It was the type of clever, madcap comedy at which Phillips excels. ‘Suddenly the second-novel pressure was taken away,’ she says. ‘Suddenly I had achieved something else.’ The fear of failing lay at the heart of Phillips’ breakdown. ‘The shame you feel that everyone else
is fine but you’re the one who can’t hack it is very difficult,’ she says. ‘I had this battle with my ego when I was admitted. I was also aware that many people suffer war trauma or child abuse and here I was, checking into hospital for writer’s block.’ She credits the generosity of the people she met in hospital, who talked openly about their experiences, with aiding her recovery. ‘I met doctors and lawyers – it was that kind of place – who were dealing with unimaginable horrors. And I went from thinking that there was something wrong with me to realising that, no, it’s in all of us. We all carry this stuff around. And many people do it silently.’ She is also angry. ‘My parents are wealthy and they paid for me to go to a lovely, private hospital,’ she says. ‘They basically bought me back my mental health. But there are thousands of people who can’t afford what we could.’ could. The feelings of shame have gone. ‘No one is immune from suffering a mental health issue,’ she says. issue, She is at peace with who she is as a writer.‘I realised after Warhorses that Wa this is my voice,’ she says. ‘Other people enjoy it, I get paid to do it. Why did I not think this is worth doing?’

REDUCE ALCOHOL
You’ve heard it before but there’s no place for alcohol on a weightloss programme. Alcohol contains empty calories, is high in sugar and has a negative effect on metabolism for a couple of days. If you do drink, limit it to two small glasses of wine, taken with cheese, nuts or protein to limit the bloodsugar hit.
GET PHYSICAL
Movement-based exercises and highrepetition resistance work such as high-intensity interval training will increase your metabolism by building lean muscle mass. Ideally you should train before a meal, when glycogen levels (stored energy from food) are lower and you burn fat as fuel. This method of training provides the maximum toning benefit and body-fat burn.
SLEEP
EMBRACE PROTEIN
Whether you’re looking to lose weight or tone up, you need to make sure you’re eating enough protein throughout the day. This doesn’t mean an extreme highprotein diet but you should be aiming for protein five times a day. The recommended protein intake for men is 56g a day and 45g for women. Eat protein immediately after exercise to maintain muscle mass, as this is essential for boosting your metabolism.

AWARE WITH DR CLAIRE Once again we are focused on the reality of death. We wonder what can be done to prevent someone who is feeling very distressed from taking his or her own life. We wonder about it, we talk about it, or maybe, we go very quiet about it. Aware has taken time to respond to the conversation dominating the headlines over the last week. It respects requests from families, in Ireland and elsewhere, to give privacy at what is probably one of the most difficult times of their lives. Death by its nature can be shocking, tragic and deeply upsetting. The death of someone through suicide can be all of those and so much more. We all know someone personally who has been impacted by suicide and most of us share a deep desire that people would choose to live, not to die. Research I carried out in 1991 highlighted for me the difference between a ‘teaching moment’ and a ‘nurturing moment’. When people who are ‘well known’ but not known personally take their own life we may feel sadness, shock or upset. We may question why people who seemed ‘to have it all’ chose to do that. We may compare our own situations with theirs. We may talk to others about them or we may go silent. Deaths such as these can be ‘teaching moments’ for us. Moments in which we realise that life can be so fragile for some people, moments to remind us
If you’re in a panic about losing those last few pounds before your holiday, here’s a few ways to help make it happen, says body-sculpting expert Louise Parker
With a good night’s sleep, our bodies release two hormones we need – ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin tells us when to eat and when we’re tired we have more of it. Leptin tells us when to stop eating and when we’re tired we produce less. Maximising sleep is one of easiest diet tips out there and you shou the ld be aiming for seven hours.
SIP WATER
Water is essential for your body to function and cleanse. Drinking enough water is a simple way to speed up digestion, metabolism and burn calories. Most of us don’t drink anywhere near enough. At least two litres a day is recommended.
Those who feel like taking their own life must remember there is always another option and there are people who can help you overcome distress that we never really know what is going on in other people’s lives – and perhaps, most importantly, moments for us to learn how we respond to challenges and to develop resilience and good coping skills. Nurturing moments are needed for those of us who have a very different reaction to such sad news. Given the frightening statistics of how many people in Ireland die by suicide, the death of someone ‘famous’ who took his or her own life can tear asunder a wound. People who are suffering do not need endless discussions. They do not need yet another person saying what ‘should be done’ to prevent suicide. They need nurturing – to recognise that they are hurting and to take gentle steps to get and take support. The Aware Support Groups, Support Line and ‘We Can Help’ Support Mail are there to
provide such nurturing whenever a person is ready. GPs, families, friends and colleagues are there too to support a person who is raw and vulnerable. Aware provides a range of helpful options that can be used as ‘teaching moments’. These include the library of lectures on how to cope with depression, which are available on www.aware.ie; the Life Skills courses, which introduce people to the key principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) either on-line or in a group format, and the schoolbased psychoeducational programme, Beat The Blues, for adolescents, which introduces them to the core principles of CBT.
Aware generally does not comment on the deaths of any individuals who died by suicide. Instead, it is focused 100 per cent on providing support for people who have depression and for their families so that they can develop resilience and get support. It is also fully committed to letting people know three key points: 1. Just because people think they are ‘better off dead’ does not mean they are suicidal. 2. Just because people may think they are suicidal does not mean they have to take their own life – there are always other options. 3. Just because someone has a diagnosis of depression, it does not mean suicide is the inevitable outcome. We hear reports that someone who took his or own life had depression, the assumption being that somehow depression caused the person to die. We know suicide is so complicated and that many factors, such as excessive intake of alcohol or other addictive substances, can hugely impact on someone taking his or her life. We rarely hear reports about the thousands of people who have depression who take help and who go on to live fulfilling lives. There is always help. Please, if you need a teaching or a nurturing moment, contact Aware. Clinical psychologist Dr Claire Hayes is clinical director with Aware. Visit Aware.ie

Mcguinness wrong on ‘Abramovich era’ Dubs by pAuL kEAnE
Michael Darragh Macauley has rejected Jim Mcguinness’ claim that Dublin have entered an ‘abramovich’ type era of domination, riposting that some counties actually have better facilities than them. Donegal manager Mcguinness stated ahead of the teams’ all-ireland semi-final clash on Sunday week that holders Dublin have created a divide which ‘is becoming bigger and bigger’. according to the 2012 all-ireland-winning manager, Dublin’s resources in gaelic football terms are akin to what Premier league soccer side chelsea enjoyed when billionaire owner roman abramovich took over. Mcguinness claimed that Dublin’s senior set-up is now ‘a professional set-up in every aspect. and they’re getting the benefit of that now’. Midfielder Macauley has clearly embraced the regime because he has developed into one of Dublin’s most important players, earning the Player of the year award in 2013.

Stricker had already been chosen as one of captain Tom Watson’s assistants alongside Andy North and Ray Floyd but, after a seventh-placed finish at the US PGA Championship, Watson revealed he had not ruled out handing the 12-time PGA Tour winner a wild card. However, Stricker has confirmed he is out due to back and hip injuries. Stricker’s chances of playing in a fourth consecutive Ryder Cup at Gleneagles next month were slim but Watson had hoped his vice captain was still eager to make the team.

She bettered this time in the semi-final but it was not enough for the final. ‘I’m not sure what happened,’ she said. ‘I’ve been training really well all year and I’m capable of going faster. ‘As regards facilities, it’s a level playing field’ But he maintained that it’s actually ‘a level playing field’ with other top teams in terms of facilities and coaching and pointed out that some of their rivals even have better set-ups than Dublin. ‘as regards the facilities and coaches, all of that, i think it’s pretty much a level playing field,’ said Macauley. ‘honestly, i believe that at the moment. ‘i would know a lot of the lads from different counties and they all have the same gig. ‘it’s not really any big secret that Dublin have been successful at underage level and those lads are starting to come through now at senior level. ‘it’s been a long time coming for Dublin. But thankfully at the moment football is in a healthy place.’ ultimately, Macauley believes Mcguinness has got it wrong about Dublin and admitted he had some misconceptions himself when he arrived on the scene in 2010. ‘When i initially came into the Dublin set-up i thought we were way past everybody else,’ he said. ‘But then i realised everyone shares the same strength and conditioning coaches. a lot of the facilities have been a lot better in different counties where we’ve been. 6 European home games Napoli are unbeaten in after Gonzalo Higuain’s equaliser earned a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Athletic Bilbao last month. Ba showed that judgment was spot on by failing to convert a number of decent chances. He was unlucky not to score straight from the kick-off when his cheeky shot from the halfway line
rattled the crossbar. But he should have soon netted as he forced an athletic save from Gunners goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Ba’s best chance came when he rounded Laurent Koscielny only to

Olivier Giroud failed to convert a couple of first-half chances. Then, after Ramsey was dismissed ten minutes from time, substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain struck a post.
Efe jets in after ban confusion EFE AMBROSE will fly out to meet his Celtic team-mates this morning after learning he is not banned for their Champions League play-off against Maribor. The Nigeria defender was sent off for a ‘last man’ challenge in the 4-1 defeat by Legia Warsaw in Poland and sat out the second leg of the third-round qualifier at Murrayfield, which Celtic lost 2-0. However, Uefa revised that scoreline to a 3-0 win for Celtic after it was discovered Legia had fielded a banned player, putting the Scottish champions
through on away goals. With the second leg being forfeited, Hoops boss Ronny Deila admitted there was some confusion as to how many games
‘I’m happy because we need defenders’ Ambrose would have to sit out. ‘He didn’t travel today, he is coming tomorrow morning,’ said Deila. ‘In the beginning, there were some communication problems. We didn’t think he was ready
because he got two matches, but in the end it was one match. ‘So he is coming now and I am happy because we need defenders.’ Celtic were last night attempting to register Ghana winger Mubarak Wakaso for the Maribor game after agreeing a loan with Rubin Kazan. Deila said: ‘It is going on but it doesn’t seem like there is going to be anything today. It is hard to get the paperwork together. I think it is going to be hard to have him ready for the game against Maribor.’

ARSENAL’S Aaron Ramsey was sent off in Istanbul last night as the Gunners’ Champions League campaign got off to a tough start with a goalless draw at Besiktas. Ramsey (pictured), who will miss next week’s second leg, was handed the first dismissal of his club career ten minutes from time after picking up his s e c o n d booking of the night for pulling on the shirt of Oguzhan Ozyakup. However, the Gunners will be confident of finishing off their Turkish opponents at the Emirates Stadium next Wednesday, even without a crucial away goal.

FooTbaLLer of the Year Michael Darragh Macauley says the level of competition in Dublin’s football panel is ‘absolutely disgusting’, writes Paul Keane. Colourful Macauley meant it in a positive way and made the statement in response to claims that Dublin’s players haven’t been tested yet in the Championship. They face Donegal on Sunday week in the all-Ireland semi-final and the fear is that they may be undercooked after double digit wins over everyone they’ve faced so far. but midfielder Macauley says the reality is that their squad is so strong that players operate at an ultra-high level each time they play
internal training games, so are fully conditioned for the tie. ‘We have to go to the well every time we have a training session,’ said Macauley. ‘The competition is absolutely disgusting at the moment. It’s so tough trying to get
‘It’s so tough now trying to get a jersey’ a jersey and lads are rightly trying to kill each other to get a jersey. ‘Lads are going to the well every single training session trying to get a jersey so I’d have no worries about that. ‘It’s obviously a different stage to Croke Park, to playing a
Championship match, but the games we’ve been playing have been to a very high intensity. They have to be. ‘If someone else has the midfield jersey, I’m going to do everything I can to get the jersey off his back. If you don’t have that, that’s what ruins a squad and you’re going nowhere.’ Macauley confirmed that Ger brennan is back in full training and available for selection for the Donegal game. The all-Ireland winning St Vincent’s club captain hasn’t featured for Dublin this year because of club commitments and subsequent ankle surgery.
