executed by ‘the Beatles’
THE killer referred to as ‘John’ in the grueseome beheading video of US journalist James Foley could be the ringleader of a trio of British-born extremists known as ‘the Beatles’. A former hostage, who was held for a year in the city of Raqqa by the Islamic State (IS), told a newspaper he and ten other kidnap victims were guarded by the gang and they nicknamed them ‘the Beatles’ because of their clear British accents. Masked knifeman ‘John’ is said to have been the main rebel negotiator during talks earlier this year to release them. The hostages were eventually handed to Turkish officials after ran-

som demands were met. Prof Paul Kerswill, a linguistics expert at the University of York, told The Guardian he believed the man spoke in ‘multicultural London English’, an accent most commonly found in the East End, ‘a new kind of cockney’. The family of Mr Foley, 40, reportedly received an email from his captors last week outlining their intention to execute him. The email was ‘full of rage against the United States for the bombing’ said a spokesman for the family. ‘[We] explained to them that Jim was an innocent journalist, had done no harm to the Syrian people. Sadly they showed no mercy to Jim.’ Mainstream Muslims, including parents of suspected British jihadis, have vowed to work with police and security services to root out extremists. Mr Foley’s family has urged people not to watch or share the video of his death, with an online campaign to instead share pictures of him at work. #RespectJamesFoley. Supporter, actress Mia Farrow, tweeted: ‘Don’t share video. Give them nothing. #RespectJamesFoley.’

Adultery is on the cards now
‘My marriage lacks warmth, closeness and spice, We shouldn’t be doing this... It’s so naughty but nice’
‘ROSES are red, violets are blue, forget that I’m married... I’m hitting on you.’ It may not sound like the most romantic sentiment but this is just one of the charming poems to appear in a set of greeting cards that ‘celebrate’ adultery. Other morally dubious messages in the series include: ‘My husband is lazy, his hair is grey, we haven’t had sex in so long he may as well be gay.’ The cards are being launched by Illicit-encounters.com, a dating site for those looking to
by DANIEL BINNS cheat on their partners. Spokesman Mike Taylor said it was expecting ‘huge interest’ from its 900,000 members, from adulterers wanting to mark their ‘affairversary’ to those trying to lure a potential lover. ‘We are playing “catchup” with the continent, who have long accepted and celebrated mistresses and “hist-resses”,’ he said. ‘The cards are available to buy from Mistresscards. com.

Please help Gardaí seek lone gunman Rail CEO on leave for strike Mr Shaw find his lost hat Picture: Darren Kinsella
A STORY about a man who has lost his hat might sound like silly season fare, but this commuter’s plight is worthy of mention. Eddie Shaw (pictured) from Santry appealed for people to be on the lookout for a cap he had for 50 years, after he left it on the No.1 bus home from the city centre on July 25. The 69year-old told the Northside People newspaper the orange hat was a gift from his late mother in the 1960s. He said: ‘It is a soft sailor’s cap and made of corduroy material.’ If any readers find it they can email news@metroherald.ie.
New centre to honour poet Heaney PLANS for a new centre to commemorate Seamus Heaney have been given the go-ahead, Northern Ireland’s environment minister has announced. The facility will be built on the site of a former police station in the late poet’s native Bellaghy, Co Derry. Mark H Durkan said he hoped the centre would be a fitting tribute. The Seamus Heaney Interpretive Centre will include exhibition areas, a library, arts studio, a café, amphitheatre and outdoor public space. Heaney, who was awarded the 1995 Nobel prize, died last August at the age of 74.
Green light for diaspora TV channel IRELAND’S first international TV channel, Irish TV, has had its licence application approved by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI). Irish TV, which launched in May targeting the global Irish diaspora, has entered negotiations with the BAI for a content provision contract. ‘We are delighted to be obtaining a broadcasting licence in the Republic, where we are headquartered,’ said Irish TV CEO Pierce O’Reilly. The move comes ahead of the launch of its expanded autumn schedule, which features weekly half-hour programmes from all counties in Ireland.
GARDAÍ investigating the killing of Dubliner Andy Connors in Saggart on Tuesday night believe he was shot by a lone gunman who entered the house through an open door. The shooter, wearing a balaclava, shot Connors a number of times in the upper body. He was pronounced dead at around midnight at Tallaght Hospital. The attack occurred at the man’s newly-built home in the Boherboy
area of the west Dublin suburb. Connors’ wife and four of his children and his niece were in the house at the time of the incident. Investigations are centring on the 45-year-old victim’s criminal background. Connors was jailed for ten months in late 2012 for an attempted robbery at a home in Cork. Connors had also made a substantial settlement with the Criminal Assets Bureau.
THE chief executive of Irish Rail is on holiday, it has emerged, just days ahead of a nationwide strike. Irish Rail spokesman Barry Kenny confirmed that boss David Franks is ‘out of the country’, but added he is in ‘ongoing contact’. He said: ‘We’ve had a situation where we’ve been in ongoing contact with the trade unions, he’s met with members of the trade union leadership on an ongoing
basis, but unfortunately we haven’t had any indication that there will be a move to call off these actions.’ Mr Franks is due back in the office on Monday, a day after the first action this Sunday, when the All-Ireland football semi-final between Kerry and Mayo kicks off. Members of the NBRU and Siptu plan to bring services at the rail company to a halt on a subsequent four days over the next month.
Government told it can end austerity as recovery builds by ORnA cunninGHAM NO NEW austerity measures will be necessary in Budget 2015 for the Government to hit the deficit target, Goodbody Stockbrokers has said. Research by the stockbroking firm showed the economy is strengthening quicker than expected. It also said tax revenue is higher than anticipated, at around €1billion so far this year, and, when introduced, water charges should bring in another €500million. Chief economist with Goodbody Dermot O’Leary said the deficit will be less than four per cent by the end of this year. He said: ‘We think the deficit could be around 3.7 per cent. That’s only touching distance from the three per cent for next, so the Government doesn’t need to do anything for next year and it will hit the three per cent deficit.’
‘€500m could be used to cement the recovery now’ Speaking to Newstalk, he added: ‘The Government has a choice to make and they can make silly choices or they can make sensible choices. We have a situation where we think the budget deficit will be below three per cent. We have a policy out there in terms of water charges that we think is going to bring in about €500million next year – what we’re saying is that €500million now could be used to actually cement the recovery in the Irish economy over the next number of years.’ He added: ‘In relation to taxes, we’re still at the stage where the higher rate of tax, 52 per cent, is among the highest in Europe, now perhaps that can start to be reversed.’ He said that this measure would not only cement the recovery in the Irish economy, particularly in terms of consumer spending, but also reduce pay pressures.

Sharp rise in number of industrial disputes
Strikes: Increasing
THE number of industrial disputes has increased dramatically on this time last year, resulting in thousands of days in lost work. During the first six months of this year there were an estimated 8,324 days of employment missed due to industrial action. Compared to 3,645 at the end of the second quarter in 2013, that represents a 128 per cent rise.
The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office reveal that there have been eight instances of direct action this year, where work would have continued if no dispute had occurred. The number of missed work days is almost equivalent to the figure for the entire of 2012. The study, calculated by assessing the amount of people involved in a dispute
against the number of normal working days, also reveals Ireland’s industrial sector has experienced the majority of discord, with 7,156 days lost. Although the statistics show a rise, they are significantly better than five years ago, when almost 15,000 work days were obstructed in the first half of the year and, in total, 278,000 workers took to the picket lines.

Cameron wants crackdown on British jihadi terrorists THE hunt for the jihadi murderer of US journalist James Foley began yesterday, with British prime minister David Cameron cutting his holiday short as it emerged the killer was likely to have come from the UK. Mr Cameron condemned the ‘brutal and barbaric’ act, which he acknowledged was ‘increasingly likely’ to be the work of an unidentified Briton, adding: ‘Let’s be clear what this act is – it is an act of murder, and murder without any justification.’

Obama told: ‘You can save reporter’
THE fate of a second US journalist captured by the militants who murdered James Foley was in doubt last night. Steven Sotloff was shown at the end of a video depicting Mr Foley’s beheading – with jihadists warning he will also be killed if president Barack Obama does not call off US airstrikes in Iraq.

government. Intelligence officials on both sides of the Atlantic have been scrutinising the grisly video showing the beheading of Mr Foley, who was kidnapped in Syria more than two years ago. US reports suggested the killer could have been released from detention at Guantanamo Bay, under Mr Obama’s presidency or that of predecessor George W Bush. Mr Obama broke off from his own holiday to deliver a statement, in which he said the nation was ‘heartbroken’ at the journalist’s death. ‘No faith teaches people to massacre innocents – no just God would stand for what they did yesterday and what they do every single day. People like this ultimately fail – they fail because the future is won by those who build and not destroy.’ Meanwhile, social media sites yesterday threatened to delete the accounts of users sharing the gruesome clip or promoting IS messages. Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo said: ‘We’re actively suspending accounts as we discover them,’ while a YouTube spokesman added: ‘We have clear policies that prohibit gratuitous violence and remove videos violating these policies.’

Justice promised to protesters over teenager’s death
Arrests: Demonstrators are made to lie down by an armed officer early yesterday Picture: AP
PROTESTERS angered by the killing of Michael Brown have been promised the policeman who shot him will face a ‘vigorous prosecution’. The pledge from state governor Jay Nixon came as nearly 50 more people were arrested during an 11th night of racially charged demonstrations over the death of the black teenager. US Attorney General Eric Holder also tried to counter suspicions that white police officer Darren Wilson will be let off lightly after gunning down Brown during a confrontation in the street. He said 40 FBI agents were working on the case and had interviewed hundreds of people as they tried to find out whether Wilson had a good reason for firing his weapon in Ferguson, Missouri.

I think anyone who plays in a band can totally relate to that,’ said Pritchard, whose ex is actress Mischa Barton. But Pritchard insists he doesn’t keep the lacy lingerie once it leaves the stage because he’s too much of a ‘gentleman.’ ‘Usually the roadies keep them – well sometimes,’ he confessed. ‘You might do a gig the next day and then sometimes they’ll be pinned to the kit. F*** knows what happens. (I don’t take them) I’m not a sleaze. I’m a gentleman.’ After taking some time off so they could get some breathing

We spent every waking moment with each for eight or nine years,’ Pritchard admitted, ‘But we’ve found a new place and a new spot, there’s a lot more headroom now and more excitement back in the band. It feels like our first time again.’

Stars told to PAY if they want to do Super Bowl IT’S America’s biggest show and the one they all want to land but Coldplay have been told next year’s Super Bowl halftime slot is theirs... if the price is right. The British band are said to be in the running with Katy Perry and Rihanna for the coveted gig but all three acts have been told they’ll have to pay to play. Past performers have not received a fee, instead having their costs covered, but never before have they been asked to cough up for the pleasure. The Wall Street Journal reported the stars were asked to ‘donate a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the halftime gig’. Plans to charge for the right to star at February’s Super Bowl

Cliff set for return to UK charts Suicide tourism up, study finds CLIFF Richard looks set to return to the British charts just over a week after finding himself at the centre of a police sex abuse investigation. Fans of the beleagured pop star have been showing their support by buying copies of his 1992 No.7 hit I Still Believe In You. As of yesterday, it was less than 500 copies off the Top 40, with the Official Charts Company putting the track at No.43. Richard announced on Tuesday that
he was pulling out of a charity event at Canterbury Cathedral in September, because he didn’t want it to be ‘overshadowed by the false allegation,’ his spokesman said. The singer’s apartment was searched by police last week as part of an investigation into an alleged sexual assault on a 16-year-old boy at a religious event in 1985. Richard, who was in Portugal when the search took place, has denied any wrongdoing. Richard: Chart moves
Suicide tourism is on the rise, experts said, after they found that the number of people travelling to Switzerland to take their own lives had doubled in four years. Of six ‘right to die’ organisations operating in Switzerland, four offer services to foreign nationals – including people from ireland. Researchers from the university of Zurich looked at 611 cases from 31 countries around the world. Their paper, published in the Journal of Medical ethics, found in 2008 there were 123 cases
of suicide tourism. This dipped to 86 cases in 2009 and increased to 2012 – 172 cases. Overall, 58.5 per cent of cases were women and the median age was 69 – although the ages ranged from 23 to 97. Most cases used the dignitas clinic, which charged 9,000 to 10,500 Swiss francs (€7,400 to €8,700). diseases including motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis accounted for 47 per cent of cases. in Switzerland, assisted suicide is legal as long as the helper does not personally benefit from the death.

Are media to blame for redhead bullies?
I
have never contacted a newspaper before, but I just feel that your front page story [Mh, Wed], with the headline ‘Red you’re dead: Ginger racism rife’, is terrible. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that, in this day and age, people and the media are still isolating redheads making them feel different, when they are not. The only reason children are still being bullied is because articles such as this are being written about it in the media. Like holding a red-headed convention. Why stereotype? We don’t hold conventions for Irish blondheaded people, so why do it for red-heads? If I was a red-headed person this morning and reading Metro herald I would be disgusted. and if I was
a child with red hair I would wonder why I was open to bullying because of my hair colour. People have loads of serious conditions that they deal with on a daily basis, why not assist them instead of trying to stereotype people that don’t even have a condition. Now, apart from the obvious that no matter where you live or work you’re not going to get public transport door-to-door, so a bit of walking can be factored into the lower BMI of commuters. But I reckon there is another reason – commuters lose weight due to the stress induced by the constant delays, breakdown, driver flybys, signal faults, etc, experienced by bus and rail users on a daily basis. nce the preserve of movie villains and hammy racial stereotypes of the French, the rollneck has weaved its way right back to relevance for the Autumn Winter 2014 season, making an appearance in numerous collections from 3.1 Phillip Lim to Tom Ford. Originally designed as a utilitarian garment to keep nippy winds at bay, the rollneck first gained traction as a fashionable item at the beginning of the 20th century, later growing in popularity with the rise of the Beat generation of the 1950s. It’s a knitwear style that’s been celebrated for its masculine elegance, while at the same time being damned for perpetuating a certain brand of campy passé. The key to nailing the rollneck is savvy styling, ie, combining the right rollneck with the appropriate ancillary pieces. That’s to say that a fine merino rollneck in blood orange is ideal for wearing in place of a smart shirt underneath a trim charcoal blazer, but don’t forget that a chunky ribbed rollneck works only when paired with a just as robust double-breasted peacoat.
As the summer sun fades and autumn’s more bracing conditions make their present felt, the rollneck offers that much-needed warmth and comfort. For a look that works from late August through to September, team a lightweight cashmere or merino rollneck with a Harrington jacket, a pair of slim but hard-wearing chinos, and some double monk-straps or chelsea boots and you’re channelling Mick Jagger and Alain Delon. Job done.

Rosie GaRland
Born in London to a runaway teenager, Rosie Garland delights in writing about outsiders. Her new novel, Vixen (out now), is set during the era of the Black Death. She also writes poetry and short stories, while fans of gothic post-punk might know her better as the singer in Leeds band The March Violets.
The Paying guesTs by saraH WatErs
aha, i remember waters. Didn’t she write saucy lesbian historical romp Tipping The velvet? Yes. Fruity female sexuality is rather Waters’ thing. But although The Paying Guests centres on a sapphic love affair, it’s also a brilliantly involving study of England’s social, emotional and economic upheaval in the aftermath of World War I. Tell me more… Having lost both brothers during the war, and with her father dead, Frances Wray has been forced to take in lodgers – or ‘paying guests’, as she and her mother prefer to call them – in order to maintain the upkeep on the old family house. Mr and Mrs Barber, a lower middle-class couple, duly move in upstairs and, before long, Frances is fantasising about Lilian Barber in the bath. Soon the pair are meeting feverishly in the corridor and planning together a furtive, idyllic future. Waters eschews the sensationalist, gothic trappings of her early novels for a more conventional exploration of her female characters’ inner lives. Modestly flamboyant Lilian is trapped in an unhappy marriage; independent-minded Frances is caught between a sense of duty to her mother and the freedoms promised by the century’s faint stirrings of female emancipation.
Through The Looking gLass
is this book as gripping as waters’ others? It’s certainly her longest but after a slow-burn start, it becomes propulsive. Frances and Lilian’s affair produces an unforeseen event that plunges them both into the nightmarish machinery of the legal system. Waters is very good at matching the socially engaged, panoramic sweep of Dickens with a forensic study of an individual psyche. Frances emerges as a highly sympathetic figure, caught between horror at the potential consequences of her and Lilian’s actions
and a heart-melting tenderness for the woman she loves.
should i read it? It’s juicy, beautifully observed, not afraid to be explicit but also marked by a careful attention to the minutiae of women’s lives. Occasionally, Waters’ characterisation of her lower-class characters veers off course. But if you’re looking for a big, immersive read, this is it. Claire Allfree

Dubs box clever with Bernard’s help by pAuL kEAnE Back on New Year’s Day, 2013, Jim Gavin took charge of his first game as Dublin football manager and was aided by a familiar if unlikely face, Bernard Dunne. almost two full seasons on, Dublin’s players continue to lean on the ex-boxer for words of encouragement, though exactly what his role is remains a mystery to those on the outside. Suffice it to say, boss Jim Gavin believes the former WBa Super Bantamweight world champion adds vital value to their quest to become one of the game’s great sides. ‘He is there to maximise their sporting performance and help them get their lifestyle aligned so as to give them the capability to perform,’ explained Gavin at the time. With Dublin homing in on back-toback all-Ireland titles, the 34year old Neilstown native clearly has a significant impact on the players, and Paul Flynn attempted to outline exactly what it is. ‘Bernard’s a world champion boxer, we’re all aware of that, so whether you’re training or in the gym or in croke Park preparing for a game and you look around and see him there, it’s just a great presence to have,’ said Flynn. ‘He is someone who has done it, who has walked the walk. He’d chat as well with us and make sure we’re focused. It’s nothing complex. There’s nothing really to hide about it. That’s as simple as it is. He’s just a brilliant fella who fitted in seamlessly. He’s great to have around. He’s there all the time.’ asked specifically what Flynn would talk to Dunne about, the man favoured by many to be named Footballer of the Year in a few months’ time smiled. ‘Golf mostly,’ said wing-forward Flynn, who plays to a respectable 14 handicap. ‘We’d actually chat about golf a good bit. It’s very simple really, just chatting, “how are you feeling?” There’s no rocket science to it. I can’t even think of the last thing we talked about. It’s all just him making sure you’re in the right frame of mind ‘Some lads I know would opt out of dealing with performance coaches but when it’s someone who has walked the walk, it’s great to have him. It’s a bit different. Like, when Bernard Dunne asks you to go for a chat... look, I don’t know whether they do opt out or not. For me, he rings me, I answer and I go and meet him. I would never say no.’

Cadogan dismisses blame placed on dual players Eoin Cadogan says he’s sick of defending the status of dual players in Cork and insisted they weren’t to blame for the hurlers crashing out of the Championship. dual player Cadogan was an unused sub in last weekend’s heavy all-ireland semi-final loss to Tipperary though fellow footballers damien Cahalane and aidan Walsh both played the full game. Former hurling colleague donal Óg Cusack has been outspoken in his views that players simply can’t reach their peak in two
different games at such a high level. But Cadogan said he’s tired of talking about the issue and
‘I’m burnt out from talking about it’ claimed that anyone trying to scapegoat the dual players for their failure to reach the allireland final is wrong. ‘i’m burnt out from talking about it, it’s just the easiest thing
for people to jump on at this stage,’ said Cadogan. ‘Could you say that everyone on the Cork team last Sunday played well? no, you couldn’t. ‘We were probably beaten in too many areas of the field. Can you blame the dual players for that? i don’t think you can. i just think it’s an easy outlet to say, “dual players are the problem here” automatically. ‘i think you have to take collective ownership throughout the whole panel.’

Home is where the heart is: Sexton says Irish players belong here
sEXTON HiNTs AT POssibLE RETURN TO LEiNsTER fOLD THE fuTurE of Jonathan Sexton should become clear in the coming weeks after the racing Metro out-half insisted it was important for the top Irish stars to play their rugby in Ireland, writes Gavin Howarth. Sexton, 29, joined french big spenders racing Metro last summer on a two-year deal with an option to stay on for a third season.
‘It’s so important players stay’ However, he was back in Dublin yesterday as an ambassador for adidas, and said he had already made up his mind about whether or not to return to Leinster next season, confirming that ‘hopefully in the next few weeks everything will be wrapped up’. The Dubliner was the first high-profile Irish player to decamp for the riches on offer in the Top 14, but he said he was pleased that others had not followed his lead. ‘I’m glad obviously [that they stayed], especially Sean
(O’Brien) and Jamie (Heaslip) last year were the high-profile ones,’ added Sexton. ‘Going forward, I think the union and the provinces are working closer together and I think it’s just so important that players stay in Ireland, from a welfare point of view for the internationals it’s important.’ Crucially, Sexton does not believe that the spending power of the french and English clubs will prevent the Irish provinces from challenging in the European Champions Cup, which makes a return home more inviting. ‘You see with Leinster signing (Ben) Te’o and Kane Douglas they have signed top-quality international players and with that quality coming in they’ll have no problem competing. for all the money that is there [in france] the provinces will still be competitive,’ he insisted. Sexton also has his personal life to consider,. He and his wife Laura have just become new parents to their son Luca, and a move home would make it easier to access their family support.
Improvement: Ronny Deila applauds the travelling fans after a better show
CELTIC took a step towards the Champions League group stage as Callum McGregor scored a crucial away goal against Maribor. Legia Warsaw had beaten the Hoops 6-1 on aggregate in the previous qualifying round but Celtic progressed after the Poles were punished for fielding an illegible player. McGregor took full advantage of the reprieve, firing the visitors ahead in the sixth minute. Damjan Bohar hit back for the hosts but Ronny Deila’s men will be confident of progressing in next week’s return leg at Parkhead. The Celtic boss sprung a surprise by bringing in Beram Kayal for last season’s top scorer Kris Commons. Efe Ambrose, who joined up with the squad late after it was originally believed he was suspended for the game, was on the bench. Celtic made a fantastic start when Stefan Johansen picked out Jo Inge Berget on the left and his effort fell to McGregor, who slammed the ball in. Maribor hit back on 14 minutes when Zeljko Filipovic’s pass split the Celtic defence and Bohar slipped the ball past Craig Gordon. Celtic threatened from a series of set pieces and Virgil van Dijk powered a header past Jasim Handanovic, only to see the ball smack team-mate Johansen in the face on the goal-line. At the other end, Gordon parried a long-range drive from Agim Ibraimi. After the break, Gordon made a fine save from Ibraimi’s header. Johansen had another shocker when he burst through, only to lose control as he tried to round Handanovic. Kayal appealed for a penalty but Celtic were happy to play out the final minutes.

EVERTON boss Roberto Martinez is eyeing up Marseille midfielder Morgan Amalfitano as a replacement for the injured Ross Barkley. Marcos signs on but injury could maroon Fellaini But it appeared the ailing 20-time league champions suffered a setback when midfielder Fellaini reportedly sustained an injury in training. The Belgian had been expected to tie up a loan move to Napoli before the end of the transfer window, but pictures emerged showing the 26year-old on crutches with his left
foot in a protective cast. New United manager Louis van Gaal has made it pretty clear he does not see a future for Fellaini at Old Trafford, despite mounting injury problems at the club. With Michael Carrick ruled out for two months with an ankle injury, Ander Herrera, Tom Cleverley
and Darren Fletcher are United’s only fit central midfielders. Fellaini has endured a disappointing time at United since signing from Everton last summer, and it was something of a surprise when he replaced Herrera during the second half of United’s Premier League opener against Swansea.

I said no to huge offer, claims Thomas by gAvin bROwn
WORLD Cup winner Thomas Muller claims he turned down a move to Manchester United, in the latest blow to Louis van Gaal’s transfer plans. Van Gaal admits he needs ‘better players’ if he is to restore United to their position of perennial title challengers and Champions League contenders. However, despite the arrival of Argentina defender Marcos Rojo, the Dutchman has been unable to attract the biggest names. Mooted deals for Arturo Vidal and Angel Di Maria have yet to materialise, and Muller’s claim underlines Van Gaal’s struggles. The German (right) has signed a new deal at Bayern Munich but said: ‘I was aware I could theoretically earn more with a transfer. The sums standing by from foreign clubs were astronomical.’ But United insist rumours of the failed move are not true, with a club spokesman saying: ‘It is not true that we made offers for Muller at any stage.’
