child road deaths double in a year
The number of children killed on Ireland’s roads has already more than doubled this year, new figures reveal. Road chiefs have voiced their worries about the sharp buck in the trend over recent years for fewer child deaths as a result of road accidents. Already this year, 13 children under 14 years of age have died in road collisions, compared to six last year. Six of those who died this year were pedestrians, six were car passengers and one was a quad bike user. Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe said the surge was ‘incredibly worrying’ after many years of decreases in child road deaths. ‘Attitudes to road safety are formed at a young age and we would urge parents and teachers to continue to prioritise teaching our youngest and most vulnerable road-users how to stay safe on the roads,’ he said. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has urged parents, guardians and

teachers to make sure children are ‘streetwise’ about road safety as they return to school next week. It is sending 85,500 high-visibility vests to primary schools for every child starting school this year. RSA chief Moyagh Murdock said parents and guardians need to make sure road safety is a top priority. ‘Children are the most vulnerable of our road users so it is really important that they are streetwise about road safety,’ she said. Despite the rise this year, there has been an overall 89 per cent drop in the number of children killed on Irish roads between 1997 and 2012. One in three killed was not wearing a seatbelt or restraint. Some 44 per cent were pedestrians and 42 per cent were travelling in a car at the time. Boys are more likely than girls to be killed on the roads, the figures show.

WE cOuLD sOOn bE Living in ciTiEs in THE sky SCI-FI stories about cities running out of room for people are becoming a reality. But as urban populations rise at a terrific rate, one possible solution could be to build up, and up, and up. These images show ambitious plans to build a giant tower, which could house an entire city – complete with its own ecosystem. The Endless City project is an award-winning proposal by SURE Architecture, which suggests that London could house its first space-saver skyscraper – to stop dense cities from spreading outwards. Interlinking ramps connect the structure to create a ‘city’ that creates both space and atmosphere, said Alina Valcarce, of SURE Architecture. ‘The goal is to conceive a building that is effective as it is inviting, while being permeated by generosity and openness,’ she added.

Ryanair introduces business class (but food isn’t included) by SHAROn MARRIS FOr many air travellers, flying with ryanair means scambling for a cramped seat, stuffing as much as you can in your hand luggage and trying to negotiate the optional charges on its website. If they don’t, they will miss out – but still pay the ‘business plus’ price. Quakes in Iceland Last winter was the sparking air fears stormiest on record EarthquakEs are rocking Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano, adding to concerns that magma movements may trigger an eruption that could hinder air traffic. Iceland’s Met Office said two earthquakes measuring over magnitude five shook the volcano under the vast Vatnajokull glacier. some 500 quakes have hit the area since tuesday midnight. Iceland’s aviation alert level remains at orange, the second highest. On sunday, the Icelandic Met Office lowered the alert level, saying there was no sign of an imminent eruption at Bardarbunga. In 2010, Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokul volcano erupted, causing 100,000 flights to be cancelled after Europe’s air space was closed for five days out of fear that volcanic ash could harm jet engines.
LAST winter was the stormiest on record for Ireland and the UK, climatologists have found. Researchers from NUI Maynooth working with colleagues at Loughborough University in the UK studied records dating back 143 years and they found that despite previous winters having more storms and storms in the late 1980s and early 1990s being more intense, no other year had a winter as severe as 2013/14 where frequency and intensity were combined. Dr Tom Matthews at NUI Maynooth said that assessing how unusual these conditions is ‘an important task as such destructive weather events are of tremendous societal significance’. The research is published in the Nature Climate Change Journal.

Pyjama-clad pensioners in court after eviction
A PENSIONER couple appeared in court in their pyjamas yesterday after what they claim was an illegal eviction from their home. Barrister Suzanne Boylan told the Circuit Civil Court the County Sheriff had been ‘rough-handed’ as Martin and Violet Coyne, age 71 and 61, had to leave the house they rented for 15 years without their clothes or possessions. The relevant legal provision prohibits the seizure by the Sheriff of a domestic tenancy, Ms Boylan added. Judge Raymond Fullam heard the Coynes had failed to comply with a series of orders to vacate the property at Carpenterstown, north Dublin, because of difficulty finding another accommodation. Last month Judge Jacqueline Linnane adjourned an application to jail the couple. The court had heard the Coynes’ former landlord, Darragh Ward, went into receivership in 2012 and the receiver sought to sell the house to reduce Mr Ward’s debt to ACC Bank. Judge Fullam adjourned the case to October, after it was agreed yesterday that friends of the couple would remove their belongings from the property.

House price rise slowing AverAge house prices throughout the country rose at a slower rate during July, latest figures show. The cost of buying a home rose two per cent during the month, down from the 2.9 per cent rise in June, a Central Statistics Office report reveals. And while prices in Dublin continue to climb – up 2.7 per cent during July – they are increasing at a slower rate than each of the previous three months. Property prices in the capital are now on average 23.2 per cent higher than they were at the same time last year. Nationally, the price of a home is up 13.4 per cent compared to 12 months ago. However, the countrywide figure is skewed by Dublin, where a shortage of housing is being blamed for ramped up prices. House prices in the rest of the country rose 1.3 per cent in July and are only 4.9 per cent higher than the same month last year. Housing Minister Paudie Coffey insisted the government is working on boosting the construction industry, but despite 70,000 former builders on the dole, he signalled a cautious approach was necessary. ‘We must be careful about how we manage a sustainable recovery in the construction sector,’ he said.

just as later, NekNominating spawned ‘rAK-nominating’ or ‘random Acts of Kindness’, except this just sort of drew everyone’s attention to the fact that kindness is supposed to be a given rather than something you celebrate or congratulate. But then we are living in a world where the message ‘don’t set yourself on fire’ still needs to be transmitted, so it’s hard to know. Anyway, it’s not yet clear when this nominating madness will end, so ask not for whom the bucket tolls. We’re weeks into the icy deluge, and what with the like of Denis o’Brien and now several politicians getting in on the act, the monster appears to be exempt from any requirement to be seen as cool or credible. So your time may yet come. And it will be ‘fun’. of course ‘fun’, especially ‘good fun’ should be regarded with extreme suspicion. This Saturday I’m cycling 130km around Wales in aid of fun. ‘I can’t wait’. There will be ice buckets at the finish line too, but those will be for soothing my unmentionable places following a six-hour bike ride where my 15 stones are supported by a slender, and brutally un-cushioned saddle atop two rockhard racing wheels. I’m going to call it the ice-f****t challenge.

PeoPle who are overconfident fool others into believing they are more talented than they really are. New research shows that those with an inflated view of their own abilities are more likely to succeed at work – and could partially explain banking collapses and other disasters. These people are more likely to overestimate other people’s talents too, and therefore take greater risks, according to academics from Newcastle and exeter universities. The study, published in journal PloS oNe, also said those who underestimate their own skills are seen as less able than they actually are by colleagues. In the study, 72 students were asked to rate their own ability and that of their peers after the first day of their course. Some 32 students (45 per cent) were under-confident in their ability as compared to their final mark, 29 students (40 per cent) were over-confident and 11 (15 per cent) gave accurate self-assessments. Students who predicted higher grades
for themselves were predicted to have higher grades by others, irrespective of their actual final score. The same applied to those who were under confident. The task was Risky business: repeated after six Little Miss Confident weeks when students knew each other better, but the findings remained the same. Those who were over-confident were overrated by others. Study author Dr Vivek Nityananda, of Newcastle University’s Institute of Neuroscience, said: ‘These findings suggest people don’t always reward the most accomplished individual, but rather the most self-deceived. ‘If too many people overrate themselves and deceive others about their abilities within organisations, this could lead to disastrous consequences such as airplane crashes or financial collapses.’

Speaking yesterday after being freed by Syria’s Sunni extremist group, the al Nusra Front, he added: ‘Now that I’ve found out, I’m overwhelmed with emotion.’ The journalist was reunited with his family on Tuesday after two years in captivity. UN officials now say the Islamic State has committed crimes against humanity in Iraq and Syria. On Monday, the UN said IS fighters faced being war crimes charges after they executed 670 prisoners in Mosul in June.

Women-only town seeking single men A Brazilian town made up entirely of single, ‘strikingly beautiful’, women – most of them aged 20 to 35 – has made an appeal for eligible bachelors. But fellas, before you quit your job, kiss mother goodbye and head south, be aware this is a woman’s world – and they will set the rules. THIS is the moment a girl of nine accidentally shot her gun instructor dead with an Uzi. The image was taken from a 22-second clip that plays up to the point where the girl loses control of the automatic weapon at the Bullets And Burgers range in White Hills, Arizona. Mr Vacca, 39, was standing close to the girl when the Uzi recoiled as she fired, shooting him in the head. The instructor, a father and former soldier, was airlifted to hospital on Monday, where he later died. Footage of the shooting, recorded by the unnamed girl’s parents, has been released by police in Arizona. As the film clip unfolds, Mr Vacca is seen to instruct her to hold the weapon with two

she fires a second time. His last words are: ‘Alright, full auto.’ The child then loses her two-handed grip on the weapon in automatic mode and it pulls to her left, striking Mr Vacca in the head. Mohave County sheriff Jim McCabe said the full video was ‘ghastly’. It is not known if the range had an age limit on shooting or if the girl, who was unharmed, was having a safety class. Firearms safety expert Ronald Scott said: ‘You can’t give a nine-year-old an Uzi and expect her to control it,’ Phoenixbased Mr Scott said. Sam Scarmardo, who has run gun ranges for 14 years without any safety problems before, said the girl’s parents had signed waivers saying they understood the rules. ‘I have regret we let this child shoot, and I have regret that Charlie was killed in the incident,’ he added.

Lucky lottery winners are California dreaming by gARETH MAkiM FOR many 23-year-old aspiring music stars, a trip to San Francisco might normally conjure up ideas of late nights and hard partying. But Conor Fay was more than happy to put those to one side when the opportunity came to accompany his grandmother on a dream National Lottery trip to the home of the Golden Gate Bridge. And when Bernie O’Reilly’s name was read out on the Winning Streak gameshow, the 73year-old knew she had to bring her grandson after nearly a decade of wishfully planning just such a trip following Conor’s return from a family holiday there years before. ‘It’s been a fabulous trip, it’s a different world here,’ said Cabra native Bernie, who visited the Sonoma wine valley, trendy HaightAshbury and the scene of the car chase from the movie Bullitt, all while staying at the luxurious Fairmont Hotel. ‘We always said we’d save up and go, but my husband said no, no, so I said “well then Conor and I will go on our own”,’ joked Bernie. With orders from girlfriend Danielle to look after his gran (‘I was well briefed, it wouldn’t look good if I went off rambling’), Conor, who fronts a rock band called The Sex Beasts, will earn plenty of brownie points once Bernie reports back. ‘I told him that if he gets in with any of the

Kate gets Bush-whacked by AnDREi HARMswORTH THEY waited 35 years to hear her sing live, but Kate Bush fans were left demanding their money back after the eccentric star refused to sing arguably her two most famous hits at her comeback gig. The backlash began as the curtain came down on the 56year-old’s first stage appearance since 1979. But Bush left the stage at London’s Hammersmith Apollo on Tuesday without singing Babooshka or Wuthering Heights or any tracks from her first four albums. The omissions from her threehour, 29-song set angered fans, some of whom had paid £1,500 (nearly €1,900). British electronic duo Mint Royale led the outrage online after the show. ‘Hi @BBCWatchdog, Kate Bush is not performing her hit single “Wuthering Heights” on her current ‘tour’. ‘Am I entitled to a full refund?’ the group tweeted. ‘Why is no-one annoyed that @KateBushMusic didn’t sing Wuthering Heights or Babooshka? I’d be fuming,’ tweeted Antony Bushfield. But other fans raced to defend the star, who did perform other classics such

The mother of a student who overdosed on methadone has said she hopes her son’s death can help save others. Teresa Burke, whose 22-year-old son Kealan died a year after taking the heroin substitute, believes graphic images and a hard hitting video documenting her son’s struggle during the final few months of his life will act as a powerful deterrent. So I understand how people get passionate about that cause.

state funeral for Reynolds is a joke
D
EAR Metro Herald, I have to say I for one am a bit sickened that the former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds received a State-funded funeral. Is ‘take take take’ this man’s middle name? He was a multimillionaire. He was only in office for less than three years, yet he received an annual pension of €149,740 for three years’ service. The rest of us have to do 40 years. This is all public money being, once again, given to an already rich man. Say whatever you like about him, but we are not all fooled by the rhetoric from the pulpit and his many ‘friends in high places’. Eric Byrne ■ I counted 18 motorcyclists and five or six Mercedes in Albert Rey-
nolds’ cortege. In addition there were several gardaí and politicians in attendance, all at our expense. Despite the brutal cuts imposed on lower- to middle-income workers, there has been little change in the behaviour of our ‘royalty’. Government TDs and senior civil servants still gorge themselves on extravagant lunches and dinners and continue to claim ridiculous allowances. The €30m spent on the three-day tour of Ireland by the Queen of England was outrageous also; the budget was €8m. When are we going to get a government that will apply austerity measures to itself and its branches in the same way this one has done to the coping classes? Coming up to the 2016 elections, I’m sure Fine Gael and Labour will

lectric Picnic is once again upon us and that means (aside from debating what the collective noun is for a bunch of people strolling around in onesies and wellies) we’re packing our camping bags with three days’ worth of fashwan. We asked festival veteran, stylist, and co-founder of tabitha Magazine, Una O’Boyle, for her tips on getting it right at the most colourful festival of the summer. ‘Flower crowns today are the striped over-the-knee socks of six years ago,’ says Una. ‘they were cute for a while but when you ry second walk into a field and every person is wearing them it can feel pretty contrived and lacking in personality.’ She’s not wrong. A quick look at instagram confirms that every celeb and their mother have a death grip on their floral coronets and they’re not giving them up. it’s easy to fall back on triedand-tested festival style tropes too, but Una’s not sure it’s the best idea in a soggy irish field. ‘there are cut-offs, kimonos and fringing as far as the eye can see [online], and of course we want to emulate that look. ‘However, you have to remember that most festivals in ireland are held somewhere in the midlands, in soggy fields. it’s hardly the 1960s california love fest we have pictured in our heads. ‘i think classics like parka jackets a la Kate Moss (pictured above) not only look stylish, but are pretty practical too. And you can’t go wrong with some great shades, in case the sun does come out.’ But she’s not opposed to a little weatherinappropriate dress, as long as it’s creative – and no better place than music and arts fest, eP. ‘Festivals are one time you can wear what you want and have some fun,’ she adds. She should know. the 28-year-old Dubliner (pictured right) has been going to festivals since she was 13, so she’s had plenty of time to scope the style scene. ‘i remember saving all of my babysitting money over the year to pay for my Witnness and Slane tickets, and spent hours going over the line-up (that was in the paper – no apps back then),’ she laughs.
fEsTivAL wisH LisT FESTIVAL living involves camping, but somehow grimier. There’s drink involved, which means other people bustling around the campsite, tripping up and stepping on your stuff. If you’re going to bring anything, it needs to be hard-wearing, weatherappropriate and a little miracle worker, keeping you fresh and clean after three days without a shower. There’s nothing nicer, after setting up tent than sitting back in a camp chair and surveying your surroundings, mojito in hand. This colourful one is a winner. And if you’re getting the legs out while you stretch back, first of all make sure you take the edge off your deathly Irish glow with Cocoa

Una’s expert tips
• Pick a spot to meet up in case anyone wanders off and goes missing. Mobile networks are crammed and you can’t rely on phones. • If you really want to get into the pit for your favourite band, don’t drink for an hour or so before the set, ladies. If you leave for a loo break you either won’t get back in or you’ll spend the whole gig queuing. • Spend as much time as you can in the arena, not in the campsite. • You have an amazing opportunity to go binge on some amazing music, so go see as many artists as possible. Those are the memories that you will take home with you.

As a glasses wearer, I always love attending the Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year finals, which were held last week in the Royal Hibernian Gallery on Ely Place. Hosted by Darren Kennedy, each of the six finalists were interviewed, and eventually Jenny Keane was crowned the Irish winner and will head to the finals in London this October. ‘I am absolutely thrilled to have been voted Ireland’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year. We were in total shock when we discovered we’d both been selected as regional finalists. Overall the experience has been fantastic and I cannot wait for the final in London this October’, said Jenny of her victory.

A field day for your face If you want the glamping festival look, multipurpose products are a godsend, writes Vicki-Marie Cossar At a festival, you want your face to stand out from the crowd – but you don’t want to be carrying a lot of products in your make-up bag. ‘Think about ways in which you can apply product and try to pack those that can be easily applied with your fingers,’ says Clare Lille, make-up trainer for Illamasqua. ‘Also opt for products that are multiple purpose, for example, cream blushers can be used as eye shadows or lip tints.’ For Jane Richardson, international lead stylist for NARS, festivals are also all about freedom of colour. ‘Coloured eyeliner pencils will stay smudge-free for 12 hours and can be used as liner or for stencilling pretty artwork on to the face,’ she says. ‘And a super bright show-stopping nail is a festival must-have.’ Living in a tent for the weekend can play havoc with your routine and so can those late nights. Lille’s festival essential is a highly pigmented concealer to brighten your under-eye area. ‘Try to find a shade with peach undertones as this will lift the darkness around the eyes,’ she says.

On her final leg of the tourist trail along Ireland’s windswept west coast, Síle Ní Bhraonáin travels from Schull in west Cork across the county to the Old Head of Kinsale. Along the route Síle squeezes in a spot of sailing, stops off to sample some of the local seafood, and later she’s treated to some local diddly-dee.
It’s our weekly visit to the world of crazy cat people and doting dog lovers, however this evening we also venture into the less travelled other pets territory. First up is a trip to the St Patrick’s Day Dog Expo in Dublin where canines compete in waggiest tail, best trick and even doggy dancing competitions. Next we find out about the work of a cat midwife and follow Shadow, a Siamese, through her birthing plan. Lastly we meet Leslie Burban from Cork who keeps very cute African pygmy hedgehogs (above).
Drama Scandal
Sky Living, 9pm
It’s something of a scandal that Joe Morton bagged an Emmy for his role as Olivia Pope’s dad in this satire, while Kerry Washington went home empty-handed. Morton’s performance as the power-crazed Rowan is a polarising one, often careering over the top into Shakespearean grandeur, while the rest of the cast get on with being in a soap. It’s Acting with a capital A. Tonight dad and daughter have another of their excruciating dinners.
rizzoli & iSleS Alibi, 9pm
There’s Scott & Bailey, now Rizzoli & Isles, both natural successors to the tradition of female buddy crime shows pioneered by Cagney & Lacey. Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander star as the Boston-based cop/forensic duo, with the case of a murdered jogger the first to ruffle their impressively mounted coiffeurs.
zombieland Film4, 9pm
Comedy addition to the clapped-out zombie film fad directed by Ruben Fleischer. Jesse Eisenberg plays Columbus, a nerdy student who teams up with gruff cowboy-type Woody Harrelson (above with Eisenberg) to survive a zombie apocalypse. The pair soon befriend sisters Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin and decide a theme park is the safest place to hide out in. Columbus’s ‘survival rules’ are amusingly reminiscent of the genre knowingness of the Scream films.

From ringtone ditties to chart topping singles... DUKE DUMONT: Move over David Bowie – there’s a new Thin White Duke in town. By Joe Gamp
L
ondon-based producer duke dumont (aka adam dyment) first scratched a living making ringtone ditties for technology companies. after dazzling the underground as a respected house dJ, he’s now crafting platinum-selling no.1 singles – doused with an electronic pop twist – to wide acclaim, remixing the likes of Lily allen and bat For Lashes and conquering stateside festivals. Currently hotter than Lady Gaga’s branded poker stick, the eastender talks orlando bloom and pop music ahead of a slot at this weekend’s electric Picnic…
Dance music is a big deal in the pop music world at the moment. What was the breakthrough point for you into the charts? Without a shadow of a doubt things turned when I released Need U (100%) – before then I was releasing tracks for an underground, club level. The track had some great pop appeal through the vocals that we placed on there with A*M*E. I guess the timing of it all came round perfectly. There’s always been a pattern
19
with pop music that what is first considered underground will come to influence the mainstream. As an underground DJ, have you always been a fan of chart music? I’ve always been a fan of a good song, whether it’s Stevie Wonder or Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Electronic music being so popular is almost history repeating itself. If you think back to the mid-1990s, most chart-toppers were club-based pop music. The likes of me, Disclosure and Route 94 are all part of this second wave.
‘I’ve always been a fan of a good song’: Duke Dumont
You worked making ringtones at one point, which seems like a fairly humble start to your career... Yeah it was the last nineto-five job I had, sampling audio loops from dance music tracks and turning them into a tone that people could download on to their phones. I’ve gone through hundreds of classic dance tracks, so I think it’s all gradually etched itself on to my brain! Now you’ve sold two million copies of your single I Got U and hit No.1 – leaving that job must seem like the best thing you’ve ever done? Well yeah, I ended up being made redundant, as I wasn’t doing any work. I was too busy playing with my myspace page and thinking about my music – they were tracking me, George Orwell style. But I never thought I’d be able to further my obsession into a career. I’m working on a full album and a live show and it’s taking up
all my time. You’ll usually find me in a rehearsal space on the Hackney Road. So what’s been the most surreal moment for you in your journey so far, now you’re rubbing shoulders with the upper echelons of dance music society? I
don’t hang out with celebs as I’m doing my own thing, but there was the time I was hanging out with Orlando Bloom on his ‘infamous’ trip to Ibiza at London City Airport. I like to think I planted a seed for music with him after sharing the flight and dinner – but then again, maybe not.
Getting your boogie on at the Picnic Orna Cunningham’s heading to Electric Picnic this weekend – here are her Top 10 acts The Two Bears at Casa Bacardi are Raf Rundell (previously of record label 1965 Records) and Joe Goddard (a Hot Chip alumnus), and the Hot Chip sound is very evident. Plenty of crunking whomp, it’s a really dirty, mellow sound. They hit Casa Bacardi at 10pm on Sunday. Grind to: Bear Hug. I saw Pet Shop Boys last year at Berlin Festival. These two chaps have been making dance music since 1981 and their music has a lo-fi, fun quality specific to 80s dance a lot of contemporary acts fail to nail. Their light show is a fantastic treat, there are campy costumes galore and the dancers are exuberant. They close out the main stage tomorrow night. Jump about to: Go West. Metronomy are really bloody cool. ool Clothes, hair, and general aura, they look like a Kooples ad. They’re also incredible music makers. They’re big fans of the slow delicious
build, with beats you can count until the crescendo kicks in and a sort of lazy, sexy explosion runs up your spine and over your scalp. As they sing: ‘It feels so good.’ Electric Arena at 8pm on Saturday – a mediocre slot for an amazing band. Dance to: The Bay. Foals are a little rockier, but still very danceable. Think fists in the air, jumping, rhythmic head bopping, grab-your-partnerand-kiss-them kind of music. Hummer is a hell of a tune, shouty, loud and exclamatory, but it’s an oldie no now. You’re more likely to hear tunes fr from Holy Fire and maybe a ne new one from their forthcoming album. Main stage ttomorrow, at 9pm. Head bop to: Inhaler. I don’t think London Grammar should be higher up the listing than Metronomy, but we won’t hold that against them. I have a sneaking suspicion Hannah Reid (pictur (pictured) is singing lower than her na natural range so I’m not sure how good they ar are live, but they’re absolutel absolutely haunting recorded. One to check out. Electric Arena, 9.30pm, Saturday. Sway to: Strong. Clean Bandit is another electronic group,
Bear Hug: The Teddy Bears Picnic featuring elements of classical music. Really bouncy, light, and fun, this group had a massive hit during the summer with Rather Be – the kind of earworm you really don’t mind filling your head with every waking moment. They have a lot of guest singers, so I’m not sure how this will translate to the live show, but they’re a pleasure to listen to. Jitter to: the whole set. Portishead are one of the headliners this weekend, at 10.35pm on the main stage on Saturday. You’ve likely heard one of their
songs since they formed in 1991 – they’re distilled, slippery melancholia, with a touch of sex bristling off lead singer Beth Gibbons’ breathy gibbons. Slow dance to: Glory Box. Lily Allen’s taken on a more electronic edge recently with the release of Sheezus, but still retained the lovely melody-heavy style that made her famous. She’s gotten snappy too, with plenty of commentary in her new songs – a great juxtaposition. I’m looking forward to her stage show. Gentle dance to: Our Time. Sinead O’Connor is a bit of a one-woman force and has summed up a lot of what’s brilliant about the Irish music scene for a long time. Take Me To Church is an absolute banger and you know there’s real feeling behind the lyrics from a living legend. Listen to: her musings on Irish society between songs that kick arse. St Vincent aka Annie Smith is a little pocket rocket, with hair that looks as if she stuck a fork in a plug socket. Her music sounds like it too – lovely, weird melodies, screechy breathy highs, heavily layered with synth and bassy effects, hopping madly about, and more than a hint of David Byrne’s influence from their collaborative album. She has a great presence live too. Flail about to: Digital Witness.

EUROPEAN captain Paul McGinley will leave it to the last minute to decide on his Ryder Cup wild cards, admitting ‘something spectacular’ could yet influence his decision. Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher is the only player who can move into the automatic qualifying places by finishing first or second in the final counting event, this week’s Italian Open. But even if Gallacher fails to dislodge Graeme McDowell from the team, the winner in Turin on Sunday or even in Boston on Monday may make a compelling case for one of McGinley’s three wild cards to be named on Tuesday.
Impress me: Ryder Cup captain McGinley awaits the spectacular this week
Although the Deutsche Bank Championship does not count for qualifying, the likes of Ian Poulter and Luke Donald will be keen to impress in the second FedEx Cup play-off event. ‘There is an opportunity for the guys to play well in the last counting event when the spotlight is on them, which will be huge for those players,’ McGinley said. ‘I want to see guys bursting over the line this week. ‘If something spectacular happens this week then I will consider it. A win would be hugely significant in this kind of spotlight, in terms of pushing someone over the line.’

The Ballyboden st enda’s club man wasn’t billed for stardom as a teenager and was a talented basketball player before fully focusing on gaelic games from minor level onwards. He eventually made his dublin senior debut in 2010 and has made rapid progress since, winning two all-Ireland medals and developing into a player that opponents, like donegal on sunday, know they simply must stop. ‘Talent is overrated,’ insisted macauley. ‘I would have always stressed that from a young age because I have never been a big believer in it. Although there was a lumpy finish to the 180km stage from Priego de Cordoba, it flattened out in time for the sprint teams to move into position after Team Sky and Alberto Contador’s Tinkoff-Saxo had led the peloton towards Rondo, with Degenkolb (pictured) hitting the front first as the line approached. The bunch finish saw Michael Matthews retain the leader’s red jersey, 13 seconds ahead of Movistar’s Nairo Quintan.
Dallaglio criticism ‘a load of rubbish’ Rugby Conor O’Shea has branded criticism from Lawrence Dallaglio for demoting Chris Robshaw as Harlequins captain as a’load of rubbish’. Joe Marler will lead Quins throughout the season to enable Robshaw to concentrate on his duties as England skipper. Former Wasps captain Dallaglio described the decision as ‘strange’, but O’Shea defended the change. ‘I take these things with a pinch of salt,’ the club’s director of rugby said. ‘Put a mic under someone’s mouth and they say something people want to hear. Dig a little deeper, then it’s a load of rubbish.’

United’s boss denied being shocked by the 4-0 Capital one Cup drubbing at mK Dons on Tuesday, insisting he knew his squad still needed strengthening after the £57.9million arrival of real madrid’s Angel di maria. Heaven 17 for the Gunners
Geezer plans rich pickings for Orchard after signing five-year-deal ARmAGh legend Kieran mcGeeney has been installed as the county’s manager for the next five years. The former Kildare boss spent this year as assistant to boss Paul Grimley and was unsurprisingly upgraded last night following Grimley’s departure. But the five-year deal is a considerable show of faith in the 2002 All-Ireland winning captain who guided Kildare for six seasons. ‘Geezer’s’ influence on the team was clear this summer as they shook off a poor league campaign to reach the All-Ireland quarter finals. his first task will be to gain promotion from Div 3 of next year’s national league.
Sanchez the hero as Arsenal reach group stages yet again by GAVIN BROWN ARSENAL’s 17th consecutive appearance in the group stages of the Champions League will be worth a guaranteed £17million to the Gunners after their No.17 Alexis Sanchez secured a nervous playoff victory over Besiktas. But it wasn’t all plain sailing, with the Emirates Stadium crowd voicing their frustration until the Chilean’s clinical finish on the stroke of half-time, while Arsenal played the last 15 minutes with ten men after Mathieu Debuchy was sent off. However, manager Arsene Wenger’s proud record was extended, meaning the Gunners will join Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea in awaiting the draw in Monaco at 4.45pm today.

Criticism of Donegal-style tactics is ‘crazy’ – Whelan
Talk back: Mickey Whelan
FORmeR Dublin boss mickey Whelan says criticism of Donegal’s defensive style of play is ‘crazy’. The veteran St Vincent’s man was a selector with the 2011 Dublin side that beat Donegal in a low scoring semi-final and eventually claimed the All-Ireland title. The sides meet this Sunday for the first time since, though at the same stage again with another AllIreland final place on offer. Donegal manager Jim mcGuinness has indicated his team
won’t be so defensive three years on though Whelan said it’s up to them to play whatever way they want. Asked about the criticism of
‘People said it was the most interesting game’ Donegal following that 2011 game, Whelan shook his head. ‘It’s crazy,’ he said. “People walked out of the place and a lot of people said to me, ‘that was absurd’, that it
was dreadful. But other people said to me that it was the most interesting game they were ever at. The bottom line for us was that we won it. So I felt good about it.” Whelan pointed out that all the pressure was on Dublin that day as they chased their All-Ireland breakthrough. They went on to win two of the next three All-Irelands and are favourites to land this year’s crown. ‘Where we were coming from, we hadn’t won an All-Ireland in years,’
added Whelan. ‘It was almost accepted from Donegal (that they hadn’t won). But it is never accepted in Dublin or Kerry. ‘We hadn’t won one for 16 years, yet every year we went out the expectation was that you were going to win one. So there was a lot of pressure on. For me, I was in a new management team, but I had gone through this before (as manager after 1995).’
