Kirsten Dunst and Kate Upton among victims APPLE is under mounting pressure to improve its security after a hacker threatened to publish a sex tape of Jennifer Lawrence allegedly stolen from her phone. Dozens of explicit photos and videos of A-listers – including Kate Upton, Kirsten Dunst and Downton Abbey actress Jessica Brown Findlay – have been leaked online in what has been described as the biggest celebrity hack attack ever carried out. But cyber-criminals claim there are further files featuring more than 100 famous

Writing on notorious message board 4chan.org, where the original images were published, an anonymous hacker said they would upload the video for cash. ‘If somebody wants it, let me know how I can upload it anonymously (I don’t want the FBI over me, and you don’t wanna know how I got this video),’ they added. Upton joins J-Law to nail celeb nude photo hacker
Two steps to secure iCloud accounts by DANIEL BINNS ONE of the best ways to make your iCloud account more secure is to enable ‘2FA’ – otherwise known as two-factor authentication – according to cybersecurity expert Graham Cluley. ‘2FA makes life much harder for hackers attempting to hijack control of accounts and devices, as it means they require more than just your username and password. They also need a one-time password that is sent to your device itself,’ he told this newspaper. ‘Unfortunately, Apple has had 2FA since early last year – but has been slow to bring it to iCloud accounts. It would be great to see Apple make such protection mandatory, rather than an opt-in choice for the few who even know about it.’ You can learn how to enable Apple’s 2FA protection by visiting support.apple.com. But the best security measure is still to use ‘a strong, hard to guess password’. Mr Cluley added: ‘Ultimately, the simplest way to stop your naked photos leaking out to the net is to never ever take naked photos of yourself. ‘Or, at the very least, make sure you keep your face and any identifying tattoos out of the frame.’

in Apple’s iCloud, the virtual storage system that automatically backs up photos taken on iPhones and iPads. Upton’s attorney confirmed the images were genuine, adding: ‘We intend to pursue anyone disseminating or duplicating these illegally obtained images to the fullest extent possible.’ Similarly, a spokesman for Lawrence said anyone caught posting the ‘stolen photos’ of the Hunger Games actress would be prosecuted. But other celebrities, including singer Ariana Grande, said images supposedly of them were fake. Apple has refused to comment on the claims – but critics hit out at the tech giant for only making tougher security measures optional. Cyber security expert Graham Cluley said it needed to do more to publicise additional privacy measures for iCloud. ‘I suspect most people are oblivious to the fact that when they take a photo on their iPhone, it automatically gets uploaded to Apple’s iCloud server,’ Mr Cluley added.

Sex machine not unstoppable says former president Carter FOrmEr US President Jimmy Carter has written to all Ireland’s TDs and Senators urging them to act on proposed laws to criminalise people who support the sex industry. In a letter last week, mr Carter warned it had been a year since a parliamentary committee called for the radical rewrite of vice laws to criminalise buyers of sex rather than the prostitute. The human rights campaigner said the proposed legislation would help end exploitation.
mr Carter said: ‘There is little doubt that public exposure in a trial and the imposition of a fine or jail Concern: Carter time for a few men who are prominent citizens or police officers who were buying or profiting from the sex trade would prove to be an extremely effective deterrent.’

irish Rail will not face more funding cuts, says minister by LuKE HOLOHAn
IRISH RaIl will not face any further cut in government funding next year, Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe has pledged. His announcement came ahead of resumed talks between management at Irish Rail and unions Siptu and the National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU) yesterday. The issue of decreasing government spending in the transport company has been a major talking point among trade union members who have opposed recent wage cuts. Mr Donohoe said: ‘It is my intention to commence negotiations in relation to next year’s budget by proposing no further cut for next year in subvention to Irish Rail.’ Talks continued over proposed industrial action yesterday at the labour Relations Commission with the aim of preventing further stoppages planned for next Sunday and Monday. Siptu organiser Paul Cullen described the ongoing conciliatory meetings as ‘challenging’, but said that despite no further progress all parties remained in
discussion. He said that the union welcomed the minister’s statement but added that ‘we would seek more clarity on what that would mean’. Dermot O’leary, general secretary Plea: Enda Kenny of the NBRU, said that he shared Siptu’s perspective. However, he warned that the issues and concerns put forward by his union hadn’t changed. The industrial fallout has revolved around temporary pay cuts of between 1.7 and six per cent for Irish Rail staff – expected to be in place for 25 months. Irish Rail has said that if it fails to carry out these cost-saving measures then the company faces insolvency. Urging all sides to continue lRC talks, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said further strike action would not ‘sort out anything’ but would ‘do damage to the company’. last month’s two days of industrial action reportedly cost Irish Rail €1.5million in lost revenue.
Boost for city hotels as room rates rise by 15% HOTEL prices in Dublin increased by 15 per cent in the first half of the year, new figures have shown. Accommodation website Hotels. com revealed the results of its Hotel Price Index (HPI), which showed a boost in the amount of money people are willing to pay for a good night’s sleep. While room prices across Ireland
jumped 10 per cent, showing a ‘recovery’, Dublin hotel room prices shot up to 15 per cent, making an average of €107 per night. Hotels.com spokeswoman Lizann Peppard said: ‘Following on from a strong 2013 thanks to The Gathering initiative, the latest HPI shows really promising signs of recovery.’

Concerns: Minister Simon Coveney
On the frontier: an Israeli child plays in the Gevaot settlement in the Gush Etzion settlement bloc near the West Bank city of Bethlehem. Flanagan calls on Israelis to reverse land-grab plan FOREIGN Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan has added his voice to the international condemnation of an Israeli decision to appropriate a large swathe of land inside the occupied West Bank. He called on Israel to ‘reconsider as a matter of urgency’ its move on around 1,000 acres of land in the Etzion Jewish settlement bloc near Bethlehem. An anti-settlement group described it as the biggest such claim in 30 years. The land is to be used for the creation of new Israeli housing.
by JOAnnE AHERn Mr Flanagan said the Israeli decision was a ‘serious threat’ to the viability of the two-state solution to which Ireland is committed. ‘Ireland has repeatedly made clear that settlements are illegal under international law and their presence and continued expansion in the occupied Palestinian territory is incompatible with the aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians for peace and the realisation of the two-state solution. ‘This remains the only viable framework

for the achievement of a sustainable, democratic and peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians alike,’ Mr Flanagan added. Echoing US calls to reverse the decision, British foreign secretary Philip Hammond said: ‘This is a particularly ill-judged decision that comes at a time when the priority must be to build on the ceasefire in Gaza. It will do serious damage to Israel’s standing in the international community.’ Meanwhile, Amnesty International also called on Israel to ‘scrap’ its ‘illegal land grab’. It said the move
would directly affect at least five Palestinian villages near Bethlehem. It added: ‘Israel is appropriating the land based on its interpretation of a law dating back to the Ottoman era which declares an area “state land” if it has not been cultivated or farmed for several consecutive years. ‘Around 40 per cent of the West Bank has already been classified by Israel as “state” land.’ The Israeli housing ministry said the announcement is just the first step and it will be several years before anything is built there.
Review of Irish troops’ role in Syria UN PEACEKEEPING by Irish troops in the Golan Heights is being assessed following increased attacks on international troops in the region. Speaking to RTE yesterday, Minister for Defence Simon Coveney said that a number of reviews were already under way on the ground and at UN headquarters in New York to determine whether it was still safe for troops to carry out patrols there. He said: ‘I’ve made it very clear that I’m not going to commit further Irish troops to this mission, unless there is a very fundamental review of how it is going to operate. ‘Clearly this is no longer a demilitarised zone and we need to get assurances from the UN, and indeed where possible, from Israel and Syria, that we can operate to the mandate of this mission.’ While Irish troops are well equipped, Mr Coveney said they are not prepared for a war zone environment. He called the recent increased violence faced by defence forces as an ‘unacceptable risk’.

Free kick pitch invader is fined A FOOTBALL fan who invaded the pitch to take a free kick was told by a judge yesterday that he ‘bent it like Beckham’. Lifelong West Ham supporter Jordan Dunn ran on to the pitch and kicked the ball towards his team’s goal during their Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. District judge Gareth Branston said: ‘You had consumed alcohol and your stride pattern was a bit out of kilter but to borrow a phrase you did bend it like Beckham. Regrettably it was about 30mph slower.’ His shot in front of 35,000 cheering fans, which became a YouTube hit, was easily saved by West Ham’s goalkeeper Adrián San Miguel del Castillo on August 16. The 22-year-old, of Dover, Kent, was fined £305 (€385).

A DOG survived falling down a cliff – by clinging to a rocky ledge for eight days. Sprig stayed alive by licking moisture from moss and rocks while stranded on a small outcrop. The nine-year-old springer spaniel is thought to have been chasing birds before he disappeared on his walk. Owners Mark and Susie Sanderson organised search parties and put up posters but their pet was eventually found unharmed by a passing lifeboat crew. ‘We were looking at the view for two or three minutes and he was gone,’ said Mrs Sanderson, 50. ‘We think he must have chased a pheasant. No one knows exactly how he got there. He’s a bit leaner, maybe, but has no marks on him.’ An RNLI crew spotted Sprig when moving their boat near the cliffs after seeing a trapped sheep. ‘He was about 30ft above the water and we couldn’t work out how he had got in that position,’ said helmsman Andrew Escott. ‘He had clearly been there for some time because he was licking water off my dry suit. And he did seem rather pleased to see us.’ Sprig was been reunited with his owners, of Wheddon Cross, Somerset, following his ordeal at Foreland Point, north Devon.
Tumour boys’ parents begin Mandela had ‘soft extradition fight from Spain spot’ for Winehouse THE parents of brain tumour boy Ashya King will be separated from him for at least another 72 hours while a judge considers whether to grant them bail. Brett and Naghemeh King began their fight against extradition at Madrid’s high court yesterday. They said they did not consent to being sent back to the UK from Spain, but were sent to jail while the judge weighs up their bail application. Mr and Mrs King, now at Soto del Real prison, north of Madrid, are banned from seeing Ashya, five, who is 335 miles away and under police guard in a Malaga children’s hospital. The couple, aged 51 and 45, took Ashya (pictured) from hospital in
Southampton on Thursday. Hampshire Police obtained a European arrest warrant on the grounds the Kings neglected their son and launched a manhunt. The couple said they planned to sell their house in Spain to raise £100,000 for him to have proton beam treatment in the Czech Republic, after claiming he was denied it in Britain. Ashya’s eldest brother Danny, 23, said: ‘We never thought this would be such a big deal. We just wanted to do what’s best for Ashya.’ The Proton Therapy Centre in Prague confirmed it was able to treat Ashya, with therapy costs to be sorted out later. However, his UK doctors would have to agree to the treatment.

McFly star Harry on how he copes with fame and life as a heart-throb
H
ARRY JUDD claims he only ever wanted to be the drummer in the background before he became a national heart-throb. The McFly star and former Strictly Come Dancing winner also admitted being lusted after by women and men was a source of amusement for him and his wife Izzy. ‘I just have to remind my wife on a daily basis how lucky she is… I’m joking!’ the 28-year-old said. ‘I am very grateful for it. Before I did Strictly I was just happy being a drummer in a band. I still am. ‘I remember turning it down at first because I just didn’t want to be in the limelight on my own. ‘I didn’t want to do any
of this stuff.’ Of his time on Strictly, he said. ‘It was just a really positive experience. Everyone loved the show.’ His accumulating fame was compounded by McFly and Busted’s sell-out merger this year. ‘We started to feel like an actual band and not a one-off. It was so easy,’ he said. But he is taking things easier these days after ‘obsessive’ training gave him an ectopic heartbeat. ‘It was freaking me out,’ said Judd. ‘I was basically told to calm down on training and regulate my heart.’ Judd is a brand ambassador for Epson’s new Pulsense heart rate activity trackers.

Japan issues earthquake alert – over toilet paper Japan is urging people to stock up on toilet paper, because more than 40 per cent of the nation’s supply comes from a high-risk earthquake zone.

The Trade and Industry Ministry is promoting special toilet paper for emergency use, marking national disaster prevention day. Officials said people immediately think of food and water as relief goods, but easily forget toilet paper. Forty-one per cent of the country’s toilet paper supply comes from Shizuoka, which is in central Japan, one of the country’s most earthquake-prone areas. The government says there will be a toilet paper shortage crisis for about a month if the area is hit by an imminent Tokai mega-quake, a lesson learned from the deadly March 2011 disasters in northern Japan. a lack of toilet paper could even cause further discomfort when people start using tissue paper, which is not water soluble and could clog up toilets across the country. Japan takes disaster preparedness seriously, and even more so since three years ago, when about 19,000 people were killed in the tsunami-hit northern coast.

Feeling broody? It’s time to feed your fertility
There is a new weapon in the battle for a baby – food. Fertility expert Zita West explains what to eat
F
ertility guru Zita West has helped some very A-list mamas over her 36-year career as a midwife, including Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow. Out of her central london clinic, West boosts chances of conception through medicine and also by improving her clients’ overall health. And for those of us who can’t afford her pricey private fees, the good news is that her new cookbook, eat yourself Pregnant, provides a snapshot of her philosophies as well as a comprehensive look at what you should eat – and avoid – to boost your fertility. ‘Nutrition is the bedrock to getting pregnant for both men and women,’ says West. ‘the maturing egg, sperm, womb lining and foetus depend upon nutrients. if the diet contains too many disrupting chemicals, transfats, refined sugars or excess additives, or is depleted of nutrients, then research shows it can significantly affect fertility. After all,
conception isn’t something that just happens in the fallopian tubes, it’s a whole-body event.’ West suggests a five-day detox, which she says kick-starts your fertility and cleanses your system. She then offers advice and recipes for how to eat for specific days of your cycle. even better, West is far more practical than preachy. Ask her to sum up the messages in her book and she says: ‘Good digestion is important. Get your body as alkaline as possible by eating artichokes, avocados, green vegetables and asparagus. ‘eat to build immunity. improve your overall lifestyle and cut out anything that depletes the nutrients needed for fertility: alcohol, cigarettes and stress. Don’t give up on carbs and drink full-fat milk. My mission is to make this process as easy and enjoyable for the couple as possible. this is about to be one of the most exciting chapters of your life, so enjoy the whole journey,” she adds.

Now enjoying its fourth year, the annual Irish Craft Beer Festival has swelled both in size and popularity, with 300 per cent growth in both the number of participants and visitors taking part since its modest inaugural outing in 2011. Given the number of new brewers entering the Irish market, combined with a fanatical customer base, it’s little wonder that thousands of thirsty punters are expected to converge on the RDS this weekend for the biggest Irish Craft Beer fest yet. Joys and pitfalls of motherhood Kate Carbery talks about her new book for would-be mothers
w
WHEN I was pregnant with our first baby I thought I had it all figured out. I knew just how it would be. I imagined a little baby cooing and gurgling between us on our bed on a Sunday morning while we read the paper. I had visions of my husband and I going out to restaurants with the baby in a little carry cot under the table because ‘they just sleep and feed for the first few weeks’. I was sure I’d be sitting near the window gazing at the night sky while curled up on a vintage, floral couch as my baby nuzzled at my breast.
But nope. Not me. Not my babies. I interviewed 40 women in Ireland about their experiences of becoming a mother. I did it because I wanted to create a kind of support group in a book, so that new mums could benefit from the hindsight of other new mums. One of the things that really struck me during the interviews for my new book Becoming Mum was how mentally unprepared most women are for motherhood, myself included. The ‘gurgling baby’ screamed and writhed for several weeks due to milk intolerance. I didn’t read a Sunday paper for a long time and still only get to the magazine half the time. We didn’t see the inside of a restaurant for months because of said screaming and writhing. My first baby didn’t latch despite all efforts made and I ended up feeling like a Friesian as I sat attached to
Experience: Kate Carbery wanted to help
a breast pump for several weeks before finally shifting to formula. Not quite what I had envisaged. We bought the vintage floral couch alright. It was where I sat with a group of new mothers talking about how we felt, helping each other through those early months. Some women from this group formed the initial set of interviewees for the book. We talked about the sometimes delayed appearance of the motherly bond, the arguments with our partners about who got more sleep and who worked harder. This group of new mums sometimes disagreed about what was the best way to feed babies, how to get them to sleep or which was the best buggy on the market. However, what we all agreed on was that becoming a mum for the first time was a life-altering event. No matter what people tell you about how it changes your life, nothing can prepare you for the changes it brings. Despite this, when it came to asking all of the interviewees ‘Was it worth all the pain, tiredness and challenges?’ Every single woman answered ‘Yes’.

Don’t expect any dirt-dishing from this unashamedly cap-doffing profile of the fourth in line to the British throne as he approaches his 30th birthday. Yes, it’s Prince Harry we’re talking about, not Harry Styles – and if you were in doubt, you’re not the target audience. The focus is on Harry the jolly decent bloke, his charity work including the Invictus Games, his time as a soldier and his fun-loving charm – with only the odd nod to his more nefarious Las Vegasbased activities.

Lesser spotted Belfast
A fan of all things Northern Irish, Liam Costello hops into a historic black cab for a unique perspective on Belfast
EarliEr this summer, i was lucky enough to watch as the Grande Partenza (big start) of the world’s second largest cycling contest, the Giro d’italia, rolled out from the Titanic slipway. and while the madness of the Giro wound its way towards Dublin, i headed out to see and hear all about the city from a local’s point of view on a Black Taxi Tour. The tours are informative, light-hearted and are presented in an unbiased manner. it’s a great way to take in the city and most drivers will pick you up and drop you back at your hotel. as it was a last-minute affair, we were glad the driver was willing to advise us on the options available, and tailor a trip to suits our interests. Thanks to the peace process, the political tours of the Falls road, the Shankill road and the world famous Peace Wall (longer than the Berlin Wall, fact fans) are very popular. We passed by the red-brick Sinn Féin Headquarters and the iconic mural of a smiling Bobby Sands, one of the 10 republican hunger strikers who died in 1981. a few blocks further on between Wa-

Below, a black cab terford Street and Springfield road, is the ruby Emerald Take-away on the Falls road – outside this shop, the historic handshake between Sinn Féin leader Gerry adams and US president Bill Clinton took place in November 1995. We also pass Kelly’s, Belfast’s oldest pub – as opposed to tavern – which has
been quenching thirst since 1720. Tours start at about €38 for three people, with each additional passenger costing only €10. The average duration of each tour is around 90 minutes.

Dubs’ attacking style needs big re-think – O’Connor
Tactics: Jack O’Connor
FoRMER Kerry manager Jack o’Connor believes Dublin’s crushing All-Ireland semi-final loss to Donegal will force them into a rethink of their swashbuckling style of play. The Dubs have been hugely successful under Jim Gavin with an all-out attacking approach, claiming back-to-back league and leinster titles, as well as last year’s AllIreland. But they were painfully exposed in defence at times against Donegal, a situation they haven’t experienced since leaking five goals to Meath in 2010 and resorting to a more
defensively minded set-up. ‘I think the mistake the Dublin seniors made was that they got sucked in to the opposition half of the field,’ said o’Connor. ‘you just can’t do that. In many ways, you’ve got to be prepared for a game of cat and mouse. you just have to mind the house and make sure that if you’re not getting scores, then you’re not conceding scores. ‘I just thought that they got suckered into all-out attack and ended up leaving vast acres at the back. It cost them for the goals. ‘They’ve always stated that they go out and play their own game at all

costs. They might be revising that tactic this morning.’ Asked if it was ‘naïve’ from Dublin, o’Connor, whose Kerry side lost the 2011 final to Dublin, stopped short of sticking the knife in. ‘I never say anyone’s naive,’ said the 2004, 2006 and 2009 All-Ireland winning boss. ‘It’s just that it’s alright sometimes to play your own game, but sometimes you have to take the opposition into account. ‘I just thought they left huge space in front of their full-back line and sooner or later the damn was going to break.’
McGuinness in position for top job at parkhead Donegal legend Declan Bonner says it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Jim Mcguinness could be Celtic’s next soccer manager. Mcguinness has confounded all expectation by guiding Donegal to a second all-Ireland final in three seasons, at Dublin’s expense. His tactical acumen, displayed once again in the shock win over Dublin, and ability to get the most out of underperforming players, could be just what struggling Celtic need. Mcguinness currently works as a performance coach at Parkhead and was installed as a 40/1 outsider to replace neil lennon. That job eventually went to little known Ronny Deila, though he’s endured a nightmare start and is favourite to be the first manager sacked in Scotland. Bonner, who had a stint with league of Ireland side Finn Harps, said a Mcguinness upgrade at Celtic couldn’t be ruled out. ‘They could do a lot worse,’ said Bonner. ‘I was just chatting to him about it. I was telling him he’d have to take his a coaching badge. I don’t think he has. I was surprised. I said, ‘that’s the first thing you should be getting done. I’d be getting them done if I was over there’. ‘He probably hasn’t the time to do them, they do take time. But, yeah, this guy at the moment, Ronny Deila, has come in from wherever he has come in (norway). ‘Stranger things have happened, but you just don’t know. Jim is hard enough to figure out at the best of times.’ Bonner said the job that Mcguinness has done with Donegal has been ‘phenomenal’. ‘after winning in 2012 and the three Ulster championships they have now under him, it’s phenomenal what he’s achieved,’ continued Mcguinness’ all-Ireland winning colleague of 1992. ‘He came in at a time when Donegal football was at a low ebb (2010). We got beat out the park in Crossmaglen that year.’

‘I was pretty frustrated coming off the course’
Time to move on: Dublin’s Anthony Daly set for new shores as west coast job beckons
DALy sET fOR nEw sTART wiTH fAiLuRE TO cOMMiT TO DubLin DuBlIn are on the look-out for a new hurling manager after Anthony Daly knocked back the opportunity of a threeyear extension, writes Paul Keane. County secretary John Costello confirmed that the Clare legend who guided Dublin to breakthrough national league and leinster titles has ‘ended his tenure as our senior hurling manager’. Just last week, county chairman Andy Kettle made it clear that Dublin required Daly to invest in the future if he was staying on and to commit to a three-year term. That would have taken him up to nine years in total with the Capital, having taken over in 2009 following a spell in charge of his native Clare.
Daly was on holidays until recently and, according to Kettle, was aware of the stipulation Dublin had placed on his reappointment. Whether Daly would have stayed on for a shorter term remains unclear and he will now be inevitably linked with a job in nearby Galway which is up for grabs. Kettle stated last week that ‘managers like Anthony Daly are thin on the ground’, admitting there are perhaps only ‘one or two credible candidates from Dublin’. Kettle added: ‘There are obviously a further range of (non-native) credible candidates who would be resident in Dublin, or in the surrounding areas, that might come into the equation.’
Speaking after his round, he said on Sky Sports 4: ‘I converted some more of the chances that I gave myself today. I was pretty frustrated coming off the golf course in the last couple of days because I felt like I left a lot of shots out there. ‘Even today, I felt like I might have left a couple out there, especially on the last. But I’m happy with how I converted those chances and I’m going to need to do the same tomorrow if I’m going to win.’ McIlroy made an excellent start with birdies at two and three before driving a 132-yard approach to nine feet at the seventh, with a nerveless putt moving him to three under for his round. Two more excellent up and downs at the 13th and 15th left him with simple putts, while he was inches away from acing the 16th, consoling himself by tapping in for his seventh birdie of the day. He passed up a chance to close his round with a flourish after finding the rough with his approach on his final hole, but he managed to save par and now sits alongside American Chris Kirk and Australia’s Jason Day.

United stun rivals with Falcao
n Colombia star in loan switch n Hernandez joins giants Real MANCHESTER UNITED pulled off a stunning coup yesterday when they captured Colombian striker Radamel Falcao in a season-long loan deal. It was a remarkable turn of events, with transfer deadline day beginning with reports Manchester City and Arsenal were interested in the player. Falcao, 28, will cost United between £5million and £6m, and the club have confirmed they will pay his wages. The Reds, however, insisted reports they will pay the player almost £350,000 a week are well wide of the mark. United have only picked up two points in three league games under Louis van Gaal this season, but an extraordinary spending spree could galvanise the club. United, who took their summer outlay to more than £150m with the Falcao deal, also confirmed the signing of Ajax defender Daley Blind for £13.8m. Heading out of Old Trafford yesterday was Mexico forward

‘To wear the real jersey is a dream’ And last night Arsenal had agreed a £16m deal to bring Danny Welbeck to the Emirates. But it was the Falcao deal that had United fans dreaming. The striker, who recently returned to fitness after a knee injury that ruled him out of the World Cup, was also wanted by Real Madrid and is widely viewed as one of the world’s top forwards.

No room for sentiment in Ryder Cup choices, insists McGinley EuROPEan captain Paul McGinley will leave personal feelings to one side as he weighs up current form against Ryder Cup experience in making his wild card selections today. The nine automatic qualifiers for McGinley’s team were confirmed yesterday when Stephen Gallacher narrowly failed to dislodge Graeme McDowell from the side, the Scot finishing one shot outside the tie for second place he needed in the Italian Open. McGinley hailed Gallacher’s ‘terrific performance’ in closing with a flawless 65 to follow his seventh place in the previous event, but was quick to stress he would coldly assess the situation after the conclusion of the Deutsche Bank Championship yesterday. although there are no qualifying points on offer, ‘Miracle at Medinah’ heroes Luke Donald and Ian Poulter were competing in Boston, while another wild

The 47-year-old Dubliner will therefore be well aware of Poulter’s heroics in Chicago and, to a slightly lesser extent, the vital contributions of Donald and Westwood. Westwood has made eight appearances in succession and won 21 points from 37 matches, while Donald has claimed 10and-a-half points from 15 and Poulter an incredible 12 from 15. against the past, McGinley must weigh up the present and Gallacher undoubtedly presents the strongest case for inclusion on current form. The 39-year-old finished seventh in the Czech Masters to give himself a better chance of qualifying.
