Horror as a second American beheaded ‘Jihadi John’: British hostage is next
Killed on camera: US journalist Steven Sotloff
ISLAMIC extremists last night released a video showing a second US journalist being beheaded – and warned a British hostage would be next. An Islamic State militant – believed to be the same Briton behind the decapitation of fellow American reporter James Foley – is seen holding a knife to the throat of Steven Sotloff before murdering him. The masked

Celtic Tiger-era traffic gridlock to return ROAD users are being warned they are facing a return to Celtic Tigerstyle traffic gridlock as the economy improves. New car sales are up by 30 per cent this year and fuel sales are up eight per cent, traffic watchdog AA said – and while the economy benefits, commuters lose out.
Congestion in the second half of 2014 will be the worst since 2008, said AA Roadwatch’s Arwen Foley. ‘Traffic volumes are up across the road network and we are seeing that every day,’ she said. ‘September and the return of schools and colleges always marks our busiest season for traffic.’
She added that the capital will be one of the worst locations for traffic in the coming months, with major road works planned. The AA identified the Cross City Luas works and the ongoing works at Newlands Cross as major factors in increasing congestion for the rest of the year in the capital.

Brad and the bride
White wedding: Jolie looked resplendent in satin
Jolie lets children draw all over veil by SEAMUS DUFF ANGELINA JOLIE said she wanted her six children to take centre-stage at her wedding to Brad Pitt – and she didn’t disappoint when she let them scribble all over her designer dress. The 39-year-old shared all the details of her big day when the couple sold the pictures to Hello! and People magazines in a joint deal. Jolie put her children – Maddox, 13, Pax, ten, Zahara, nine, Shiloh, eight, and twins Knox and Vivienne, six – in creative control when she and Pitt, 50, tied the knot at their French hideaway in Correns. That included a touching addition to her wedding gown, designed by Atelier Versace’s master tailor Luigi Massi, with drawings and messages from the children embroidered all over her flowing veil. ‘I wanted the kids to be a part of everything, including the dress because that’s our family. That represents the way we live our life together,’ the Oscar-winning actress told Hello!. Family touch: The Jolie-Pitt children added their own artistic embellishments to the bride’s designer veil

Foreign aid not as generous as we think it is MOST people believe Ireland spends up to nine per cent of its national income on overseas aid – while the reality is we only spend 0.43 per cent. The Ipsos MRBI poll for Dóchas, an umbrella body for aid agencies, showed that a majority of Irish people continue to want the Government to send aid to developing countries. Up to 77 per cent of respondents said even in an economic crisis Ireland is obligated to ‘invest in aid’.

Bank of Ireland hails ‘one of a kind’ 10-year fixed-rate mortgage deal

BANK of Ireland has introduced a ten-year fixed mortgage rate of 4.99 per cent. The new product is available to both new and existing customers, regardless of their loan to property value ratio. Head of mortgages at Bank of Ireland, Aine McCleary, said that the offer is a one-of-a-kind in the Irish market and said that customers looking to retain flexibility could also choose to fix a portion of their repayments and keep the remainder variable. ‘It combines the benefits of certainty of repayments with the flexibility of a variable mortgage

and the borrower can choose the portion they want to fix, whether that’s 80 per cent or more, or as little as ten per cent,’ she said. Already this year, almost onethird of Bank of Ireland mortgage customers have entered into a fixed rate deal, with the proportion higher among first-time buyers. Ms Cleary said: ‘It shows that younger customers are opting for certainty.’ Meanwhile, latest figures from MyHome.ie show a 32 per cent increase in the number of Dublin house sales in the first six months of the year.

The number of homes being repossessed by banks has never been higher, official data has revealed. While the total mortgage arrears figure has fallen five per cent, the long-term debt crisis is growing along with the number of families facing legal battles to keep a roof over their heads. The Central Bank reported 299 houses and apartments were seized by the banks or voluntarily surrendered from March to June this year – the largest quarterly figure since records began in late 2009. The mortgage review also showed that 1,752 homeowners are now behind in repayments for almost two years. And with the property market recovering in Dublin and parts of other cities, banks are now driving legal actions and repossessions – with 3,274 applications initiated in the courts in the three months to June. Free Legal Advice Centre (Flac) director general Noeline Blackwell said the report matches trends advisers have seen. ‘We find that more of our contacts are from people who are in deeper difficulty, giving rise to a worry that those who became seriously over-indebted at the start of the economic crisis are not pulling out of difficulty now, but rather becoming mired more deeply,’ she said. Some 3,131 privately-owned homes or apartments have either been repossessed by the banks or voluntarily handed over to a lender since late 2009. The Central Bank said that since the end of last year there has been a significant increase in repossessions – 168 for the last three months of 2013, to 281 in the first three months of this year, and up to 299 in June. Its review of arrears revealed an outstanding balance of €12.5billion remains to be paid to banks for mortgages.

COMPLAINTS to the Ombudsman for Children are up more than a quarter since last recorded levels. Released by outgoing Ombudsman emily Logan, the authority’s annual report for 2013 stated the office dealt with 1,677 complaints, a 16 per cent rise since 2012. The majority of complainants were parents, with education (43 per cent) and family support, care and protection (26 per cent) the key areas of concern. Among the complaints about education were issues with how schools handled allegations of inappropriate professional conduct; how bullying was handled; expulsions and enrolment outcomes, as well as Department of education policies.
Family support, and care and protection complaints mainly centred on child protection and issues relating to children in care and community support services. emily Logan, ombudsman for more than ten years, said while the office had made great strides in supporting better treatment of children and families by the State, challenges still remained. ‘I believe Ireland continues to require a dedicated, expert and independent oversight of civil and public administration in this area and I believe the authority of the next Ombudsman for Children should be extended to include a role on the new Independent Policing Authority,’ she said.

Call for longer sentences to halt rising tide of hate crime Specific offences and longer sentences must be created to cover the glaring absence of hate crime in irish law, academics have said. The University of Limerick said new legislation on the worsening phenomenon is long overdue and tougher penalties should be introduced to punish racist and prejudicial attacks. Law and sociology experts said the Oireachtas needs to send out a strong statement that any crime committed out of a hate is dealt with more severely. Senator ivana Bacik, who launched the report, said the research has exposed the limitations of irish law. ‘The report shows that the current legal regime is incapable of addressing hate crime, and that legislative change is required,’ she said. Some 93 racially motivated crimes were recorded last year, including seven assaults causing harm, 16 minor assaults and 44 public order offences. The total number of race-related incidents reported by the Garda fluctuated from 64 in 2003 to a peak of 217 in 2007.

Islamic State despite our serious warnings,’ he said. ‘We take this opportunity to warn those governments that enter this evil alliance of America against the Islamic State to back off and leave our people alone.’ He then vowed that the next victim would be British. Mr Sotloff had been shown at the end of Mr Foley’s execution, with a shaven head and wearing a similar Guantanamo Bay-style orange jumpsuit to his colleague’s. Mr Sotloff’s family ‘knows of this horrific tragedy and is grieving privately’, said spokesman Barak Barfi. British Prime Minister David Cameron last night condemned the ‘despicable and barbaric murder’. ‘IS terrorists speak for no religion,’ he said. ‘They threaten Syrians, Iraqis, Americans and British people alike and make no distinction between Muslims, Christians or any other faith.’ He will today chair a meeting of the British government’s emergency Cobra

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki last night said intelligence agencies were investigating the authenticity of the video. It has also emerged that the mother of Mr Sotloff made an emotional and direct appeal to his captors to spare his life just a week ago. Shirley Sotloff released the clip after the Islamic State broke its own media blackout on news of her son being taken hostage. Her speech, in which she begged ‘the caliph’ to ‘follow the example set by the Prophet Mohammed’, was noted for its deliberate language, chosen in an attempt to show respect to the IS. Footage of Mr Sotloff’s alleged beheading was withheld online by many last night – in contrast to the widespread sharing of James Foley’s. Social media sites seemed quick to take down links and many Twitter and Facebook users encouraged people not to share.

Is this a good idea?’. ‘But I never didn’t trust him. An ex cheated on me and it was awful but I promised I wouldn’t bring that into my next relationship.
‘Being cheated on didn’t make me more insecure, it made me stronger because I know that it’s not your fault. ‘If someone disrespects you it’s their problem, not yours; there’s no point worrying.’ The pop couple are enjoying life as parents to 16-month-old AlaiaMai – even if having a little one has taken the heat out of the bedroom. ‘I’m not too proud to admit that having a child affects the intimacy in a relationship at first,’ she told Cosmopolitan magazine. ‘I hate it when you hear people say they were at it again days later. I don’t believe it!’

HERLOCK star Andrew Scott has told other actors that coming out of the closet won’t harm their careers. The 37-year-old, who plays Moriarty in the TV series, came out last year but insisted he had never tried to hide his sexuality. ‘I absolutely refute anybody thinking that it has a negative impact on your career,’ he said. ‘It’s more crazy than it ever was. I do feel a sort of peace that I can be authentic and people like that. ‘I struggle a little with the coming out
publicly thing because that was something that I did a long time ago. ‘I did an interview last year and I spoke about it but I’ve certainly never really been “in”. ‘I think it’s very important to be authentic to yourself which I’ve always been. ‘The most important thing is to be who you are. I don’t like to talk about it too much because, frankly, I don’t have much more
to say about it.’ Scott spoke to Guilty Pleasures as he prepared to take to the red carpet for the London premiere of British comedy Pride – a film based on the true story of a group of lesbians and gay men who set up an organisation to support miners during the 1984 strike. The actor refused to be drawn on whether he would be returning for season four of Sherlock and if his character, who was shown killing himself, was really dead. ‘I can’t answer any of those questions. I’m so sorry!’, he said. Pride is released on Friday next week.

How times have changed: the Marks and Spenc Spencer archive exhibition in Leeds will show groovy 1960s miniskirts and (left) men’s casual attire from the 1960s, 70s and 80s
M&S go back to the fuchsia in exhibition ‘Back to School’ advert banned after complaints An ad for American Apparel’s ‘back to school’ range has been banned for ‘inappropriately sexualising’ girls and potentially normalising predatory sexual behaviour. The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said the two ads, which both showed the model photographed from behind from a low angle, imitated voyeuristic ‘up-skirt’ shots. Two people complained that the ads were offensive and irresponsible.
WHITE bell bottoms, loud fuchsia prints, sensible cardies and funnel sleeves may be the fashions that time forgot...but Marks & Spencer is bringing them back. Retro designs from the 1960s, 70s and 80s feature in the Marks In Time exhibition charting the retailer’s histo-
ry. It is based at M&S’s archive in the University of Leeds, which was established in 1984 to celebrate the retailer’s 100th anniversary. The archive’s Helen Chatterton said: ‘These three decades are key to the development of technology, fashion and pop culture.’
Clever cockatoos not just ‘pretty birdies’ CoCkatoos learning carpentry skills sounds like a parrot sketch worthy of Monty Python. Yet this is not an example of surreal humour. scientists have observed the brainy birds teaching each other how to make and use wooden tools to obtain food. It all started with a captive Goffin’s cockatoo named Figaro who surprised researchers in austria by spontaneously fashioning stick tools from aviary beam splinters to rake up nuts. He then became the role model for other members of his species, an Indonesian parrot not known to employ tools in the wild. In a series of experiments, the birds watched Figaro perform and copied him by manipulating ready made sticks to obtain food. Remarkably, rather than imitating Figaro – parrot-fashion – they developed their own technique to work best in the test situation.
Bird brained: scientists’ latest findings are as surreal as a Monty Python sketch two of the cockatoos were even able to carve their own tools out of a wooden block. one hit on the idea himself, while the other succeeded after first watching a carpentry demonstration from Figaro. Professor alex kacelnik, part of the oxford University research team, said: ‘there is a substantial
difference between repeating a teacher’s behaviour and emulating his or her achievements while creating one’s own methods. ‘the latter implies a creative process stimulated by a social interaction, while the former could, at least potentially, rely on simpler imitation. the cockatoos seem to
emulate and surpass their teacher, which is what all good professors hope for from their best students.’ the research is reported in Proceedings of the Royal society B. In experiments, one group was shown Figaro at work with his stick tool, while scientists baffled another with ‘ghost demonstrations’ in which hidden magnets were used to make sticks and nuts move apparently on their own. the parrots who watched Figaro’s performance were much more likely to pick up and try out stick tools for themselves than those seeing the ghost demonstrations. While Figaro held sticks by their tips and inserted them through his cage grid at different heights to reach the nuts, his pupils did things differently. the successful observers laid the sticks on the ground and used a quick flipping movement to propel the nuts to within their reach.

Anger as the air NicOLE turns Sky blue JETziNgER on deadline day
WE’RE used to seeing her music rocket up the charts – now Nicole Scherzinger has reached for the sky with the aid of a jet pack. She posted her blast in the air on Instagram, writing: ‘Look mom, I’m flying. Kissing the heavens for u from Ibiza! #epicday #GodIsGood.’
IT’S a TV ratings winner – but Sky Sports transfer deadline day coverage is facing a backlash after fans turned it into an X-rated event. The broadcaster faces a watchdog investigation after reporters were photobombed by supporters with sex toys and viewers complained about fans swearing on air. At Villa Park, in Birmingham, reporter Mark McAdam had his live update interrupted by fans holding a blow-up doll – and colleague Alan Irwin suffered more embarrassment as a sex aid was shoved into his ear by Everton fans.
by DOMiNic YEATMAN Reporter Kaveh Solhekol had to be led to safety at Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park ground as angry fans chanted: ‘We f***ing hate Sky Sports.’ Sky Sports News apologised for the incidents, despite claiming it had received no direct complaints from viewers about its coverage. ‘Who knows how long this will last?’ Maroon 5’s Adam Levine has shifted tons of records, judged on The Voice and bagged himself a model wife. Andrew Williams wonders if there’s any integrity left
AP
G Adam Levine: douchebag?
Since appearing ing on The Voice, Adam Levine has been hailed as ‘king of the douchebags’ by US gossip blogs thanks to his vanity, anity, self-assurance and bro-ish demeanour. anour. When I interviewed Keira Knightley for the film release of Begin Again – in which she has an ill-fated romance with Levine – she said: ‘He’s the most confident creature I’ve ever met. So confident.’
So, A Adam, are you just naturally overconfident or natur has ev everyone got you all wrong? wr ‘She said I’I’m the most confident person she’s confiden met? Tha That’s veryy sweet. I was ins insecure for or a long time about a lot of things,’ things, he says. ‘You can’t block out natural insecurities – I’ve had many and still do.. ‘For me, confidence comes out of not wanting ting to operate from fear. If
I say the wrong thing or if someone doesn’t like me, that’s fine – you’ve got to keep growing and that’s what empowers me in a world where you get so much s*** flung at you ever every day. ‘Everyone puts ‘Eve their ffoot in their mouth aat times. Maybe that’s Ma something she so picked up on… I pick don’t know what don I’m talking about. about.’
etting through to Adam Levine isn’t easy. He was going to call when he was travelling but that plan’s off, his assistant says: ‘He’s driving his classic car today which doesn’t have Bluetooth.’ it’s later decided he’ll talk to me from his dressing room on the US version of the Voice, where he’s been a judge since the show started in 2011. Unfortunately, seconds before i’m put through, his minion tells me i’m banned from asking about his wedding to world-renowned knicker model Behati Prinsloo. instead, we have to focus on the new album, V, his band Maroon 5’s fifth, and on his musical life and times in general. this doesn’t prove easy either – he seems more interested in all-round pontificating rather than getting down to the nitty gritty. For example, he says his band’s longevity (20 years since starting out as Kara’s Flowers) is down to making ‘bold decisions’ but won’t say what they are. ‘i don’t want to cite examples,’ he adds, leaving me to assume he’s talking about their move from indie rock to multimillion-selling production-line pop. ‘You need to think if something is working. You might need to make changes and think: “Why aren’t people connecting with us?”’ he says. ‘You have to strike a balance between playing the game and being honest with yourself and about what you want to put out there in the world.’ Levine and his pals have taken a blatantly mass appeal approach since the Voice gave them a profile-raising

Caitríona Ní Mhurchú – Eating Seals & Seagulls’ Eggs
Greetings Metro Herald readers from the thick of rehearsals! We’re covered in paint and deconstructed clothing, wearing shoes on our heads and valiantly waving flags. The Dublin Theatre Of The Deaf and i are mining the untold history of the deaf community in ireland for You Told Me To Wash And clean My Ears, named after the Nina Simone civil rights song Mississippi Goddam. The irish deaf community are in the midst of campaigning for the legal recognition of their language; irish Sign Language, the third indigenous language of ireland. Our small, close knit community are bursting to talk to the hearing world in their own language: iSL. iSL is a magnificent, gestural, performative language. Being an iSL user brings with it different means of expression and an alternative set of cultural values, forefronting the visual and the body. We’re inviting 40 sign language users on stage in Project for Fringe. in this production we’re looking back at the political awakening of the community. in 1971 they came together in a protest march, outraged by the killing of their deaf brother, Eamonn McDevitt, at an anti-internment rally. Forty-three years on and we’re continuing the journey. You Told Me To Wash And Clean My Ears runs at the Project Arts Centre from Sep 16 to Sep 20
The idea for my new play Eating Seals & Seagulls Eggs’ started, although i didn’t realise it at the time, a couple of years ago when i was racially abused on the 123 bus going from Ballybough to Dame Street. A woman, in her sixties, shouted through a saliva-sodden mouth that it was my fault that no irish had jobs and that it was the likes of me that was taking them from them; and that it was because of me that her daughter couldn’t get work – and that i should go back to where i came from. And then she got up from the seat beside me and moved away. Everyone on the bus was staring at me. The 123 is a small single decker bus so everyone had a good view of me and no one came to help or uttered any words of support. it was really a very odd experience. All this made me reflect on many things about us and our society but i couldn’t quite shake off the fact – funny though it undoubtedly was in a strange way – that
i had been verbally attacked for speaking irish in ireland. Around the same time there was a lot about Peig Sayers in the papers and on the radio and how people hated her; those things
came together in my brain. And now here i am with a show opening in Tiger Dublin Fringe. Gulp. Eating Seals & Seagulls’ Eggs runs at the Project Arts Centre from Sep 14 to Sep 20
Roisin Coyle – Sick Sick is a play about Orla, a carer, and Ruth, her mother suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. it’s a play about isolation and care-giving, family and reversing roles. i wanted to write about the extremes of domestic life and the escapism possible through fantasy. i wanted to write about the pressures of caring and what happens at the end of love. i started to write Sick after i read an article in a newspaper about a troubled carer and patient relationship. i was taking part in the Abbey Theatre’s New Playwright Programme at the time and used that story as a starting point for Sick. Eight full drafts later and we are ready to bring Sick to the stage. i am thrilled to stage Sick for the Tiger Dublin Fringe, as it’s an opportunity to work with a fantastically passionate community of people and it’s a brilliant platform for new writing. i am also incredibly lucky to have been given the New Theatre as a venue. My first short play, chaos Theory, was staged there as part of the theatre’s New Writing Week and i love the intimacy of the space. Sick runs at The New Theatre from Sep 15 to Sep 20
Maurice Kelliher – The Lost Hours The Lost Hours is a fiction based on likely truths, a reaction to the aftermath of the murder of five young people, and an attempt to
remember one forgotten victim. While researching these awful events, i realised that hidden in plain sight is the final victim. A factual
footnote; he is only ever mentioned as ‘…and the final victim was...’ The families of the other victims could not but publicly
express unspeakable pain – while our young man appears to be disowned. While the other victims were solemnly remembered, and horror expressed amid unbelieving rage and protest, no relatives or friends of our boy demonstrated a public expression of grief. The possible explanations for this silence may be complex – but for reasons that emerge – the cause may be sadder and simpler. The Lost Hours is a reimagining of one young man’s lost portrait. . The Lost Hour runs at The Lir Academy from Sep 17 to Sep 20

Channel 4, 12.55am Animal lovers should flock to this warm-hearted tale of George Mottershead, a shell-shocked World War I veteran who finds an antidote to his shredded nerves by rescuing neglected circus animals and setting up his own zoo in Chester in the early 1930s. Lee Ingleby (above) is on winning form as George, a man who is not going to let a lack of cash, zero experience and a sour-faced mother (Anne Reid) stand in the way of his dream.
When was the last time you saw an Austrian film set in a weight-loss camp? Exactly. So perhaps tonight is the night to give director Ulrich Seidl’s drama a go. This is the most critically wellreceived of his Paradise trilogy, following one family’s ups and downs, and focuses on overweight teenager Melanie. At fat camp, she befriends the more worldly Verena and falls in love with the camp director, 40 years her senior. Will Mel find romance where she least expects it?

One stripper’s exploitation is another woman’s liberation, so while I will not judge your interest in getting naked to a crowd of beer-goggleeyed men, I do worry that fast cash is your only god. Also, did she tell you there’s nothing ‘exotic’ about forking out for stage and DJ fees, perpetual spray tans, Hollywood waxes, and batting off frustrated husbands? Gilgun’s summary is on point: Pride details an intriguing chapter in British history, when a group of gay Londoners, dubbing themselves LGSM (Lesbians and
Matt Mueller goes on set of the next British film hit, PRIDE Gays Support the Miners), set out to help one South Wales community during the bitter 1984-85 strikes against Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government. As scripted by Stephen Beresford and directed by Matthew Warchus, the film celebrates two disparate groups not always enamoured of one another but overcoming prejudice to reach a joyously uncynical solidarity. ‘We haven’t got an agenda with Pride,’ says Warchus, whose background is mainly theatre, with hit musical Matilda among his credits. ‘It’s not preachy; it’s not trying to serve a particular constituency or defend
any beliefs. I can imagine an audience of all kinds laughing at the same situations in the film.’ Joining Gilgun on location today are Dominic West, Andrew Scott (Sherlock), rising British stars George MacKay and Faye Marsay and American newcomer Ben Schnetzer, who takes Pride’s ostensible lead as fiery activist Mark Ashton. Call them Team LGSM. Meanwhile, Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy and Paddy Considine are among the actors portraying the Welsh mining community. When it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival it went down a storm, with superlatives fired at its ensemble, and it looks set to be similarly embraced here.

Easy ways to less stress
Reduce your stress now Benjamin Bonetti says you can start reducing stress levels immediately with just four simple steps.
1
Create healthy habits The single best thing you can do to feel calmer is to improve your fitness levels. Exercise not only improves physical confidence but it also helps your brain work more efficiently and process information faster. Just 40 minutes of moderate exercise a day will reset your stress thermostat and motivate you to improve your overall well‑being.
To effectively tackle stress you need to deal with the underlying causes, writes Vicki-Marie Cossar
D
id you run all the way to the station today, terrified you were going to miss your train? Have you been fretting all night about the presentation you have to give this morning? it’s almost impossible to exist in today’s world without stress. But self-help guru and hypnotherapist Benjamin Bonetti (below) claims many of us are hiding behind stress and blaming all our failings on it, when what we should be doing is changing our lives to avoid it. ‘Stress is just a natural reaction to an area of your life where the boundaries are being pushed,’ says Bonetti. ‘it’s the fight or flight response we hear so much about. There’s no denying it exists, but we find it easier to blame stress rather than deal with the reasons behind it. People have been brainwashed into thinking change has to be difficult. But we have control over that now. We just have to make the conscious decision to do something about it.’ Research shows that thousands of adults in ireland see their GP with mental health problems each year; most of these are stress-related. in ireland the majority of workers in every industrial sector claim to be stressed. And in the uK, it’s estimated that 13.3million working days are lost to stress every year. Muscle tension, lethargy,
lack of focus and feeling snappy and irritable are all signs you’re likely to be suffering from stress, and it can end up leading to even bigger problems such as weight gain, anxiety, depression and even substance abuse. Luckily Bonetti claims he can teach us to banish stress by taking a series of micro-steps to help us regain control over our mental wellbeing (see right). ‘Begin with some internal reflection,’ he says. ‘This doesn’t have to be done in a therapy environment, it can be done on your morning commute. Ask yourself how you can change just one stressor. Be honest. And keep it simple.’ And your ability to change your state of mind, Bonetti says, becomes better with practice. ‘yes, life can be unfair and bring about situations you’re unhappy with but when put into perspective, stress is simply a natural way for your body to highlight an aspect of your life that isn’t working. ‘Avoid the temptation to ignore these signs and deal with them now. The longer you fail to take action, the harder it will be to alter your state.’

Reduce your commitments It can be overwhelming when you look at how much is going on in your life. Making promises you can’t keep (that 7.30am breakfast meeting, scheduled for the day after your third night out in a row) will leave your ‘available’ thinking power overloaded with negativity and worry. Just dial down the commitments and you’ll begin to feel more in control and less anxious.

Flip your thinking Simply re‑jigging the way you think can help you avoid stress. Things that take you out of your comfort zone generally induce stress, such as public speaking. But flipping your way of thinking (from fear to the fact that you’re learning a new skill) could introduce flexibility into your way of thinking and in turn reduce the stress of the task.

Don’t know your PHA from your HIIT? Your MetCon from Tabata? Vicki-Marie Cossar gets the lowdown on today’s training methods
PeriPHeral Heart aCtion
taBata
What A routine named after its creator, Izumi Tabata, that uses your own bodyweight. ‘Simply put, Tabata is the hardest four minutes of your life,’ says Richard Scrivener, a Tabata master trainer at Fitness First (fitnessfirst.co.uk). ‘It involves pushing your body’s energy-making systems to their limit as you work to your max for 20 seconds and then rest for 10 seconds, repeated for eight rounds.’ Calorie burn Classes are 20 minutes long, made up of a warm-up, four-minute Tabata set and cool-down. ‘The most calories burnt I’ve recorded is 250 in this fourminute session,’ says Scrivener. Benefits ‘The moves call upon every muscle in the body and more often than not involve jumping and moving from the ground to upright very quickly,’ says Scrivener. ‘This specific protocol has been proven to boost both endurance and fitness levels.’
Which eexercise routine are yyou?
HigH intensity interval training
MetaBoliC Conditioning
What A routine made up of short, intense bursts of exercise. ‘This can be as simple as skipping, or sprinting outdoors, or on a treadmill for 30 seconds at 85 per cent intensity and then resting for one minute, then repeating six to eight times,’ says Alex Davies of Virgin Active (virginactive.co.uk). Calorie burn: Davies says you can burn 300-plus calories in a 20-minute class.
What A system that works your heart, lungs and energy-producing cells. ‘In other words, it’s a wide-ranging stimulus on the body, taxing the aerobic, anaerobic and muscular systems,’ says Tim Hart, at the Reebok Sports Club (reebokclub.co.uk). Exercises are done in quick bursts. Calorie burn Hart says you can burn 500 calories in a 45-minute class.
Benefits ‘The effect of the higher intensity training is to improve both your cardiovascular and anaerobic systems,’ says Davies. ‘When performing HIIT, your capacity in these areas increases over time so you are able to train for longer and harder, thus increasing your metabolism even further and ultimately burning more calories.’
19
What A routine that works different muscle groups consecutively, followed by full-body exercises and cardiovascular work. ‘This stops any blood from pooling in a particular muscle group and keeps oxygenrich blood flowing around the body,’ says Joel Hilton, co-founder of Project-Fit.co.uk. ‘This burns stacks of calories due to the demands this puts on your cardiovascular system.’ Calorie burn Hilton says it’s possible to burn up to 1,000 calories in a one-hour class. Benefits ‘This type of training makes for a varied and challenging workout routine, which helps stave off boredom and keep individuals motivated,’ says Hilton. ‘It isn’t so good for those who are looking to build muscle bulk but if you want to lose weight, tone up and improve overall fitness, this is a great option for you.’
Benefits ‘Such training is growing in popularity, as demonstrated by the success of workouts such as Insanity, P90X and Crossfit,’ says Hart. ‘However, the beauty of it is it can be done anywhere. Try bursts of cardio work such as burpees or squat jumps alongside full bodyweight exercises like squats or pull-ups. Keep the rest periods short and you’ll have a recipe for success.’

TiPPERARY legend John leahy has put it on the line for Hurler of the Year contender Seamus Callanan, insisting he still has to prove that he can deliver on the big day. Sharp shooter Callanan has been Tipp’s stand-out performer in the run to Sunday’s All-ireland Hurling Final against giants Kilkenny. The 25-year-old added
2-4 in the semi-final win over Cork to the massive 5-34 he’d already contributed. That leaves him locked in a head-tohead with TJ Reid for the Championship’s top scorer award while he is battling Reid and Richie Hogan for the Hurler of the Year gong. but according to exTipp forward leahy, one bad performance will ruin all of that and
even bring Callanan’s reputation as a top player into question. ‘i think it is the biggest test yet for Seamus,’ said leahy. ‘He did okay in the league final, he didn’t perform against limerick and now he’s after performing in the last three or four games. So he’s been given another opportunity within the one year to get rid of the doubters.’

Westwood, stephen Gallacher and Ian Poulter were selected by european captain Paul McGinley for his team to face the United states at Gleneagles at the end of the month, with McGinley admitting ‘glimpses’ of form from Westwood had edged him ahead of donald. ‘I am obviously delighted, the Ryder Cup has always been a massive thing in my career,’ said Westwood, who has made eight consecutive appearances but suffered a slump in form midseason after winning the Malaysian open in April. ‘I have played a lot better the last month. I can say with my hand on my heart that I won’t be in a hospital to have the operation.’
ManchEstEr United have lost part of their ‘identity’ by selling Danny Welbeck to arsenal, according to the club’s former assistant manager Mike Phelan. While United were wrapping up a loan deal for radamel Falcao, Welbeck – an academy product – was heading to the Gunners for £16million. United and former boss sir alex Ferguson have been famed for their ability to produce homegrown talent, and Phelan said: ‘Danny Welbeck has been part of United’s identity and that has been broken. What will happen in the future now, nobody knows, but that thread has been broken now. ‘Maybe this is the start of a new way at United and maybe that is the way football is going. Is it better to look at the instant than the future? It is a difficult one because youth is always the future.’

Radamel Falcao is excited to be working with louis van Gaal after completing his shock move to manchester United. The prolific colombia striker joined United in a £6million season-long loan deal from monaco on deadline day, and now the 28-year-old is looking forward to immersing himself in dutchman Van Gaal’s philosophy. The forward, who could make the move permanent next summer, said: ‘I am very excited for that. Writing for eurosport, Parker ventured: ‘once [Robin] Van Persie is fully fit again, Rooney must be the person to be dropped. For me, it’ll be RVP and Falcao [starting up front] every time. ‘although there’s lots of talk about him playing in the hole behind that two, that’d be a huge mistake – why have Rooney there when Juan mata or angel di maria would do the job so much better?’
Gibson looking to relaunch his ireland career after injury nightmare daRRon GIBson admits it is a case of ‘now or never’ as he attempts to establish himself as a regular in the Republic of Ireland team. The 26-year-old everton midfielder will pull on the green shirt for tonight’s friendly against oman at the aviva stadium ten months after his last appearance there ended in agony as he suffered the cruciate ligament injury which sidelined him for much of the intervening period. Injuries and Gibson’s disenchantment with former manager Giovanni Trapattoni have limited his senior international career to 21 caps and he knows his latest opportunity under current boss martin o’neill is one he cannot afford to pass up.
He said: ‘Being out for ten months last season gave me a lot of time to think about things, and I think this is now or never, really, to be honest with you, so I am looking forward to the task ahead.

DOnALD LEfT OuT Of wiLD cARD pick EuropEan captain paul McGinley yesterday completed his ryder Cup team for Gleneagles by naming Lee Westwood, Ian poulter and Stephen Gallacher as his three wild cards. That meant there was no place for former world number one Luke Donald as Europe look to claim an eighth win in the last ten stagings of the biennial contest against the united States on September 26-28. Westwood has made eight consecutive appearances since making his debut in 1997, winning 21 points from 37 matches. The 41-year-old finished seventh in the Masters in april and won in Malaysia the following week, but suffered a slump in form until a final round of 63 in the WGCBridgestone Invitational in august. He also shared the lead after the first round of the uS pGa Championship before finishing 15th, but failed to advance beyond the first FedEx Cup play-off event. Gallacher came agonisingly close to securing
an automatic place on the team by finishing third in the Italian open on Sunday, just one shot out of the share of second place he required. However, McGinley stayed on in Turin after missing the cut and witnessed the Scot card a flawless closing 65 to record his 10th top ten finish of a qualifying campaign which also saw him retain his Dubai Desert Classic title in February. poulter has earned the nickname ‘Mr ryder Cup’ and it is hard not to see why. This is the third time he has needed a wild card to make the team, but he has raised his game on every occasion and none more so than at Medinah in 2012. The 38-year-old won all four of his matches and famously birdied the last five holes alongside rory McIlroy to beat Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson in the Saturday fourballs.

missing out: Joey O’Brien will return to West Ham for treatment on his ankle picture: inpho
Ankle injury forces O’Brien out of squad West Ham defender Joey O’Brien has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad through injury. the 28-year-old, who met up with his international colleagues in malahide on sunday, is to return to his club for treatment on a knee injury. O’Brien’s withdrawal means manager martin O’Neill now has 26 players at his disposal as he prepares for tonight’s friendly against Oman in Dublin and the opening euro 2016 qualifier in Georgia on sunday.
Martin O’neill is relishing the task of finally sending his republic of ireland team into battle in earnest for the first time. the republic will play the eighth game of the 62year-old’s reign to date this evening, a friendly against Oman in Dublin, before he takes charge of his first competitive fixture, Sunday’s opening euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia in tbilisi. O’neill has had to wait ten months for the meaningful matches to come around, but that has simply served to whet his appetite. He said: ‘it’s been a long time. it’s something i’ve never been used to, to play a competitive game how many months, eight or nine after you joined in november last year? ‘any job you have gone to at club level if you were only starting at pre-season, other than that you would be stepping into the job and playing a competitive game within a couple of days. ‘this is the first competitive game and we want to start as strongly as we can, try to get some points on the board if it’s at all possible, in a group that’s going to be tight. ‘i have said this before: the group is going to be very, very tight and i think four sides will be vying for that position.’ O’neill will use the Oman game to convince himself of a series of outstanding issues ahead of the trip to Georgia, principally the
fitness of midfielders Darron Gibson and James McClean, as they recover from injuries. Shay Given, who has returned to the fold at 38, could win a 126th senior cap with he and rob elliot likely to share goalkeeping duties. Gibson will start after ten months on the sideline with a cruciate ligament injury. asked if his team for Sunday is already picked in his head, O’neill said: ‘i’d like to see how Darron performs. i’d like to see the fitness levels of a couple – James McClean, of course, hasn’t played much. ‘that’s very much a case of a day-by-day thing. He has trained with us the last few days. He hasn’t had any football since he had an injury back on July 10 or 12. However, while there may be still places up for grabs, O’neill acknowledges that the bulk of his team is selected, and that those men who will be involved at the weekend, but not necessarily against the Omanis, are already focussing on what is required in tbilisi. He said: ‘this friendly game has come up at this moment to get a little bit of preparation in, but those boys who will not start the game, but who’ll be pretty well-assured of playing on Sunday, are thinking about it. ‘they are into it. We are into it, we are trying to get ready. it’s a long road ahead, but it’s a glorious place to end and that’s where we want to go, we want to try to get there.’
