gays to march in NY paddy’s parade A GAY group will be allowed to march under its own banner in the world’s largest St Patrick’s Day Parade next year, in a historic first. The prohibition on identified gay groups in the centuries-old New York parade had made participation a political issue. Democratic mayor Bill de Blasio refused to march this year, and Guinness beer dropped its sponsorship. St Patrick’s Day parades in other cities have been embroiled in turmoil over the issue. In Boston this year, the brewer of Sam Adams beer pulled its sponsorship because organisers excluded gay groups. Irish-American mayor Martin Walsh also refused to march. The New York parade committee said that OUT@NBCUniversal, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender support group at the company
by LuKE HOLOHAN
that broadcasts the parade, would be marching up Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue on March 17 under an identifying banner. Craig Robinson, executive vicepresident and chief diversity officer at NBCUniversal, said the group had applied to march, but there was no immediate word on why the group was chosen. ‘We welcome the parade committee’s decision to accept OUT@ NBCUniversal’s application to march and enthusiastically embrace the gesture of inclusion,’ Mr Robinson said yesterday. Spokesman for the Irish Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (Glen) Davin Roche said: ‘It’s a very positive development and important recognition that diversity is part of being Irish at home and abroad.’
Jihadi John ‘is a dead man’
JIHADI JOHN is a ‘dead man walking’ who will be hunted down and assassinated like Osama bin Laden, former British security minister Admiral Lord West, has said. The identity of the masked murderer with the London accent is
probably already known. But special forces face a race against time to save the captured British aid worker pictured alongside US journalist Steven Sotloff in the Islamic State (IS) video. Meanwhile, Russell
Brand faced an online backlash last night for seeming to justify the IS killings. He posted a YouTube video in which he said the east London ‘lad’ who decapitated Mr Sotloff must have felt ‘disenfranchised’ as a British Muslim.

An Post’s new 68c stamps are like catnip to fel-atelists
Kitty licker: Cat lovers will be pleased WE’RE not kitten you, letter senders around the country may notice some feline friends prowling through the post over the next few days. That’s because An Post has just released new stamps that really are the cat’s pyjamas. Depicting four popular breeds of cat – Maine Coon, Burmese, British Shorthair and Persian – the Red & Grey design company has teamed with feline photography specialist Amy French to make over the 68c stamp.
Amin plans to know more about a hurler’s technique than Richie, Henry or DJ.
By LukE HOLOHAn Anne Fitzpatrick, manager of the Wicklow Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said that the new addition was a great idea and represented Ireland’s great tradition of pet ownership. A spokesperson for An Post said: ‘With four glamorous cats on An Post’s new 68c stamps, this set will appeal to both cat lovers and breeders alike.’ The paw-some collectables are in
celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Supreme Cat Show, which will set up shop next year in Dublin courtesy of the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy of Ireland. The council was founded in 1968 and is a voluntary organisation the aim of which is to protect the welfare of cats and the interests of cat owners. For anyone looking to get their claws into the new designs, the stamps, special cover envelopes and a booklet are available at www.irishstamps.ie.

Rail staff pay cuts on hold pending vote IRISH Rail has temporarily frozen pay cuts for rail staff following crucial talks with trade unions. New proposals put forward as part of the negotiations mean that wage reductions will be suspended for three weeks as union members take a ballot on fresh recommendations made by the Labour Relations Commission. The planned strike action on September 7, 8 and 21, which would have affected thousands of fans attending this weekend’s All-Ireland hurling final, will also not proceed. Under these new terms, pay cuts of between 1.7 and six per cent would still go ahead, but unions have been assured by Irish Rail management that there will be no further reductions for the duration of the cost-saving scheme. The National Transport Authority is also set to engage in forums with trade unions during the 25 month initiative. Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe welcomed the outcome. He said: ‘All parties to the dispute are

by LukE HOLOHAn aware of the financial predicament of the company and this agreement is an essential element in addressing the challenges the company faces.’ Siptu organiser Paul Cullen said the proposals would be put to a full ballot of the 2,100 union members at Irish Rail. The ballot will take place from September 10 for three weeks and Mr Cullen said during that period a ‘consultative process’ would take place. Meanwhile, Dermot O’Leary, general secretary of National Bus and Railway Union, admitted it was ‘unfortunate that pay cuts remained part of this proposal’. However, he said he was pleased with the Government’s inclusion in future discussions through the National Transport Authority. He said: ‘I’m encouraged that all stakeholders are now involved in the future of the rail.’ Irish Rail has said all services will operate as normal this weekend.

The unemployment rate showed little change last month, dropping to 11.2 per cent. Official figures showing the number of people on the dole revealed a total of 398,325 people on the Live Register in August. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) said the unemployment rate was down 0.1 per cent on the previous month. The review showed that in the 12 months to August, 36,955 people had stopped signing on for benefits but that long-term unemployment remained a serious issue. The CSO said 187,598 people had been on the dole for a year or more – a fall of 11,199 in the number of men but an increase of 1,989 in the number of women. Some 47 per cent of all the people signing on were classed as longterm unemployed, compared to 45.2 per cent this time last year, the report showed. Tanaiste and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton warned that the jobless figure remains high: ‘These statistics, together with the latest Quarterly National household Survey figures published recently, show we are succeeding in tackling unemployment and that our economy and jobs market are recovering.’

‘Pretend’ cabbie spared jail term A DUBLIN man, who has never had a full driver’s licence, has been spared a jail sentence for fraudulently operating a taxi using forged documentation. David Slight, 49, from Pinebrook Vale, Huntstown, was fined €250 and given a two-year road ban after he pleaded guilty at Dublin District Court to offences under the Road Traffic Act and the Theft and Fraud Act. He also admitted that he did not have a driver’s licence.
Secret rivers may help end drought WATeR chiefs are facing calls to tap into a massive hidden network of underground rivers off the west coast in a bid to solve worsening droughts on the Aran Islands. Geologists are urging Irish Water to run new electric and sound wave surveys to track the systems – some as long as 48km and 20m wide – which flow out north of Clare under the seabed. Researchers believe these natural pipelines could hold a viable water supply.
Your new address is Earth, Laniakea IT may not be stamped in your passport, but everyone on planet earth is now officially a citizen of Laniakea. That is the name scientists have given the gigantic super-cluster of galaxies that contains our own Milky Way. The word means ‘immeasurable heaven’ in Hawaiian – an appropriate description for a structure 500 million light years across that contains 100,000 galaxies and the mass of a hundred quadrillion suns. And Laniakea itself forms just one corner of the universe.

‘Phil should be the bigger man and give up EU job’ The Green Party has called on former environment minister Phil Hogan to withdraw his nomination as a candidate for the European Commission to allow a female candidate to step forward for the post. It stated that ‘despite repeated requests from European Commission President JeanClaude Juncker for more female Backlash: Hogan candidates, only seven women have been nominated by the 28 member states, a ratio of just 25 per cent’. It added that ‘the failure of European countries to nominate qualified female candidates is an affront to the EU’s principle of equality, and stands in stark contrast to the progressive image it attempts to project’. It called on other political groupings in the EP to ‘vote against the commission as it is currently proposed’. Green deputy leader Catherine Martin said: ‘Mr Juncker has made clear his intention to reward countries which nominate female commissioners, and it would be remiss of Phil Hogan to not do the best thing
by ORnA cUnningHAM for our country now and withdraw.’ Meanwhile, MEP Nessa Childers also wrote to the European Parliament’s 190-member socialist group stating her ‘serious reservations’ about Mr Hogan’s appointment, stating it would ‘send a very ominous signal to those who suffer and fight against discrimination’. Her concerns relate to Mr Hogan’s intervention on the allocation of social housing to a Traveller family in Kilkenny in 2012, while he was the environment minister. Local officials eventually housed the family. In the letter, quoted on The Parliament Magazine website, Ms Childers wrote: ‘As a representative of all Irish citizens, including ethnic minorities such as the Traveller community, I must bring to your attention facts which were confirmed and defended by Mr Hogan himself. ‘These, I believe, are incompatible with the proper discharge of the duties incumbent upon a European commissioner. ‘I have no doubt that those would see this as a step backwards for equality.’A spokesman for Mr Hogan said Ms Childers’ comments were ‘utterly and completely without foundation’.

Healthy eating: still not easy
KNOWLEDGE of healthy eating alone isn’t enough to improve dietary health, a new report has found. The research – conducted by Safefood – showed that while our knowledge of what constitutes a healthy diet improves, our diets don’t necessarily. Dr Cliodhna Foley-Nolan, the director of human health and nutrition with safefood said: ‘When we think of the term “food skills” we generally think
just of cooking. However, food skills incorporate things like planning meals ahead, shopping and budgeting, and knowledge of basic food safety and nutrition. Knowledge of healthy eating is not enough on its own to improve diet.’ The report, which drew on a number of studies, revealed that lack of time, attitudes, cost, lack of skills and confidence have all been cited as barriers to cooking.
Dr Foley-Nolan added: ‘When we’re not comfortable with preparing meals for ourselves we’re more inclined to consume ready-made or takeaway meals, which are generally more expensive and less nutritious than meals cooked from scratch.’ In addition, food and cooking skills remain strongly gendered, the report showed, with more than twice as many women responsible for cooking as men.

KEN ROGAN is feeling sympathy for the celebrity privacy cause, but wonders why Hollywood’s A-listing young bloods are taking nude selfies to begin with? FIRST they came for victims’ voice mails, and I did not speak out – because I was not a victim. Then they came for celebs’ photos, and I did not speak out – because I was not a celebrity. Then they came for me – because my hard drive was full of nude celeb photos. Yes, the phone hacking holo-
caust took an atomic step forward last Sunday when the concept of ‘private pictures’ suddenly came to mean ‘the world’s pictures’, which in turn caused us to feel that rarest of sentiments: sympathy for a celebrity. And they deserve it too – but that sure does rankle. Slagging off celebs is the tried
and tested way we blow off jealous steam about their ‘perfect’ lives, but if we don’t help them draw a line in the sand here, we’ll end up like the unhappy cast of that Nazi-era poem, with no-one left to speak for us. by PETER ALLEN IT WILL have tongues wagging far beyond the bedroom of the Élysée Palace – and heap further humiliation on French President Francois Hollande. For the first time, his jilted first lady has described the jealousy that plagued their nine-year relationship and the public affair that wrecked it. Valérie Trierweiler – dubbed Le Rottweiler – spares few private details in her memoir Thank You For This Moment. It follows both her and Mr Hollande into the bed chamber, at one point recounting how she took ‘one pill too many’ in a fit of rage and depression. Ms Trierweiler, a 49-year-old Paris Match journalist, used the magazine to publish extracts of the book. Over 12 pages, it describes her ‘passionate, possessive, mad love for this man, who made me laugh and who destabilised me deliciously’.
Kiss and tell: Valérie Trierweiler tells of her ‘mad love’ for the president In January Mr Hollande dumped her following revelations about his secret love affair with 42-year-old actress Julie Gayet. But Ms Trierweiler says the 60year-old still wanted her back. ‘The president sent 29 texts in just one day,’ the book claims. ‘He told me that he needed me. He wanted me back, no matter what price.’
Ashya’s parents were ‘treated like terrorists’
ROONEY JR GETS HIS 1ST CAP AS DAD EARNS 96TH ALL dressed up for his first day at school, Wayne and Coleen rooney’s son Kai poses for a photo in his new uniform yesterday like millions of us did before him. But rather than just a handful of relatives, this snap was shared instantly with the 1.9million people who follow the four-yearold’s proud mother on Twitter. The 28-year-old uploaded it to show her husband what he was missing – admitting she was upset he had been prevented from witnessing his boy’s big moment as he was away on england duty. Fans joked that Kai had followed his father – who played his 96th international at Wembley last night after making his debut at 17 – by being quick to get his first ‘cap’. It’s believed Kai is studying at a €7,500-a-year prep school near the rooneys’ home in Cheshire.

THE parents of brain tumour boy Ashya King were reunited with the five-year-old yesterday after their ordeal at the hands of British authorities and Spanish police finally came to an end. Brett King said he and wife Naghmah had been ‘treated like terrorists’ in the days since they took their son from hospital in Southampton following a dispute over his care. The couple were yesterday transported the 482km from where they had been held in prison near Madrid to Malaga, where Ashya had spent four days under armed guard in a children’s hospital. After visiting his stricken son and leaving his wife to keep vigil overnight, Mr King spoke of the couple’s first moments back in Ashya’s company. ‘He couldn’t breathe he was so happy,’ he said. ‘He was so pleased to see us. We’re trying to be hopeful. Earlier, Mr King said he had no regrets about taking his son out of a UK hospital. ‘They were going to kill him in England or turn him into a vegetable.’

‘Path to peace’ agreed to end conflict CONFUSION surrounded claims yesterday of a ceasefire between Ukraine and pro-Russia rebels. Ukraine announced a ceasefire had been agreed after talks between the presidents of the warring nations. But Moscow denied the claims – insisting it was not a party to the bloody conflict. Ukraine later backtracked and said an agreement had been reached for ‘a process of ceasing fire’. And Russian president Vladimir Putin said his views on how to end the violence were ‘very close’ to those of Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko. Meanwhile, Barack Obama has hit out at Mr Putin’s Russia, accusing it of threatening peace in Europe. The US leader promised to come to the aid of allies who feared they could be under threat from Russia. ‘You lost your independence once before,’ he said. ‘With Nato, you’ll never lose it again.’ The conflict in east Ukraine between the government and pro-Russia rebels has raged since April. About 2,600 people have died in the fighting.
Samsung’s new Note 4 phablet. Users will slot the new smartphone into the wireless headset to see fantasy worlds come alive, says the tech giant. Developed by Samsung and Facebook-owned software developer Oculus, the devices go on sale next year. Samsung unveiled both gadgets at the IFA 2014 electronics show in Berlin yesterday, along with its new Galaxy Edge smartphone – which boasts a screen that curves around the edge of the handset. The firm faces fierce competition in the VR gadget market from Sony’s Project Morpheus and Google Cardboard. At the same event, Sony launched the Xperia Z3 smartphone and Z3 Compact Tablet, which allows users to play PlayStation 4 games from their mobile devices.

Strangler convicted of killing 3 women
AMERICA: A serial strangler believed to have killed at least 40 women has been convicted of three murders in the 1980s. Samuel Little appeared cheerful as he was found guilty after a ten-minute hearing in Los Angeles. His victims were found nude below the waist in alleys. Little, 74, will be sentenced later this month but is likely to be jailed for life without parole.

Innocent brothers jailed for 1983 murder set free
by JOnATHAn DREw
A DEATH row inmate and his halfbrother have been freed after 31 years when forensic evidence proved they did not rape and murder a girl. Henry McCollum and Leon Brown’s convictions were overturned by a judge after another man’s DNA was discovered near the body of a girl they were accused of killing. Lawyers for the pair, who both have low IQs, were convicted of the death of 11-year-old Sabrina Buie in 1983 after being coerced into confessions. Mr McCollum, 50, was on death row and Mr Brown, 46, was serving a life sentence. Superior court judge Douglas Sasser said ‘based on significant new evidence they are, in fact, innocent.’ Some family members sobbed as the judge gave his decision. ‘We waited years and years,’ said James McCollum, Henry McCollum’s father. ‘We kept the faith.’ DNA from a cigarette and fingerprints on a beer can at the scene were not theirs, a review found. It has been linked to Roscoe Artis, a 74-year-old

Rita: I’ll always love Harris duet
D
EFIANT Rita Ora is determined to continue singing the hit she created with former lover Calvin Harris. The 23year-old said I Will Never Let You Down – written before the couple’s relationship crashed and burned – had happy memories for her. ‘At that time, the song came from a really good place so it always reminds me of that place,’ the 23-year-old told Guilty Pleasures exclusively. ‘And I love the song.’ And she promised there would be more revelations about her personal life on her next album. ‘I’ve written a lot of the songs and they are as honest as possible,’ Ora admitted. ‘It’s all about my love life and what I love to do and how I love to go out and all that stuff.’ Presenting the GQ special achievement gong to Paolo Nutini, she said she was better prepared this year than last time around. ‘I presented last year with Ellie Gould-
ing and we were a bit drunk and tipsy so it was funny. This time I’m a bit more sober and put together,’ she giggled. Arriving fashionably late, Ora ensured all eyes were on her as she entered the Royal Opera House, in London’s Covent Garden, wearing a dazzling Zuhair Murad floor-length dress. She also sported quaffed hair complete with ring embellished braiding. ‘I’ve got rings in my hair. It took a good two-and-a-half hours to do as you have to put these rings individually in there,’ she said of her intricate do. Ora dodged an awkward run-in with rival Kim Kardashian-West by arriving after the first course of dinner had been served and sat at the opposite end of the set-up after the pair reportedly asked to be kept apart at the MTV VMAs last month.

Celebs also deserve some basic human decency

was both heartened and disappointed to read yesterday that american athlete McKayla Maroney’s hacked nude photographs are to be deleted from any site they’re found on – because they’re considered child pornography. Maroney was under 18 when the photos were taken and their dissemination means anyone spreading them could be found guilty of sharing child porn. This was enough to scare porn websites into removing them, and reddit.com sent out a website-wide warning to its users that anyone spreading the images would be in serious trouble. But the threat of legal action in general isn’t enough to scare some sites into getting rid of the photos insofar as they can – once the person snapped is over 18, it seems their photos will live in perpetuity. I’d like to remind people of a comment I read on a forum yesterday that really hit home – that somewhere in the world, a 24year-old girl is crying her eyes out in a hotel room because the entire world has seen her naked. The horrifying idea of the association with child porn shouldn’t be the only line people aren’t willing to cross – we should all try bit of basic human decency and think

ubLIn may not have its own fashion week, but it certainly has the next best thing. In its sixth year, the festival has matured into a showcase of style with a packed schedule full of fashion shows and events. As well as fashionable festivities, each year the festival chooses a person who represents Irish style to be the face, and this year it’s the multi-talented Angela Scanlon, who is the perfect ambassador for our nation’s fashion. Speaking of her involvement in the festival, Angela said: ‘I’m delighted

I have always championed Irish style and anything that throws a spotlight on that is a positive thing.’ So what can you expect from this year’s festival? Olivia Palermo tells Naomi Mdudu about her new collection of essential heels
f you had to choose only six pairs of heels to have in your wardrobe, which would they be? It’s a tough question but one Olivia Palermo, former star of MTV’s hit reality show The City, has cracked with her latest design effort: a collaboration with Edgardo Osorio, the force behind hot up-andcoming shoe label Aquazzura. Dubbed one of the most stylish women in the world by Vogue, the American socialite met Osorio just over a year ago and dreamt up the idea to create ‘the ultimate survival pack’ of heels. ‘Edgardo and I wanted to create a range of staple pieces every woman should have,’ Palermo explains.
‘So we talked through styles, materials and colours and decided on the six essentials.’ Beware: the shoes in the collection don’t come with the purse-friendly prices we’ve become accustomed to from celebrity partnerships but if you are after an investment buy, look no further. The range draws on designs from the Aquazzura atelier in florence, as well as some treasured items from Palermo’s own wardrobe. The socialite is synonymous with statement bling, so a Victorian necklace from her jewellery box inspired the ankle embellishment on a jewelled pair of sandals, while the suede ankle boots in the collection draw on Aquazzura’s patented ‘cashmere leather’. fresh out of London College of fashion, Colombian-born Osorio landed a job with Salvatore ferragamo before joining Roberto Cavalli as head of shoes at the tender age of 23. He started Aquazzura three
years ago and now his signature sexy, elegant styles have become a firm favourite with the fashion set. Palermo has become something of an unofficial ambassador for Aquazzura and is rarely seen without a pair on her feet. ‘They’ve become a staple in my wardrobe,’ Palermo reveals. ‘They’re comfortable and the craftsmanship and architecture of the shoes is beautiful. Wearing heels changes your silhouette – you feel confident and it changes the way you walk.’ Palermo’s favourite piece in the collection? ‘The thigh-high boots,’ she says without thinking. ‘They’re my go-to in winter. It’s a style I’ll go back to again and again.’
a The Olivia Palermo x Aquazzura collection is available now exclusively at net-a-porter.com. Pictured: Black bootie, €620; Gladiator sandal, €620; Jewel sandals, €1245. Olivia wears strappy sandals, €469.

E ALL COVET smooth, even skin but even the most wondrous foundation will struggle to mask large pores. Pores get larger as the years go on for most of us. This is mainly due to sun damage. If you suffer from this large pore affliction you’ll know that they act like ultra absorbent buckets in which your makeup disappears into leading to blackheads, whiteheads and patchy makeup. There are a few makeup application tips that can help you disguise the issue but what you really need is a magical ingredient called Dimethicone. This ingredient is used in pore minimising products like
Benefit Porefessional, 5 Second Blur from Garnier and Maybelline’s Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser. When patted on the skin these products leave a silky, even surface. There are a tonne of them on the market these days so there is something in every price bracket. However, if you aren’t concerned about the addition of other makeup enhancing ingredients and are just after a pore fixer, take yourself to the chemist and pick up an anti-chafing gel in the feminine aisle. kept makeup artist secrets. It works in exactly the same way as the products marketed to the beauty consumer. Use it after your skincare, follow with your base, or go natural. When applying products like these the most important thing is to pat them in and avoid dragging the skin. There is also an added bonus, it will smooth fine lines, making them appear less noticeable. During the day feel free to pat some more into the areas you want to blur. Another tip is to use a very fine loose mineral makeup and buff a small amount in circular motions. This technique really lessens the appearance of pores and gives an airbrushed affect. Voila! Pore free face…

one of 2013’s most acclaimed debuts was the hilarious love, nina, letters stibbe wrote while working as a nanny to a london literary family in the 1980s. This first novel shares their sense of period and social comedy. set in 1970s leicestershire, it’s narrated by nine-year-old lizzie Vogel and begins as her parents’ marriage combusts and her hard-drinking mother moves to a village where, as a divorcée, she is a pariah. fearful of being taken into care, her daughters draw up ‘a man list’ and – as their mother – write to candidates, with inevitably messy results. The Zone of InTeresT by Martin aMis
Martin Amis’s reputation has yo-yoed down the years, with some dodgy novels and dodgier soundbites but here he really has found form with a devilishly inspired black comedy of illicit love and sexual jealousy narrated by nazi officials at Auschwitz. he portrays the holocaust primarily as a logistical headache for its administrators – a provocative angle that proves fittingly repulsive. A sober afterword confirms the seriousness of Amis’s attempt to fathom the horror, not to mention his feat in distilling decades of reading into the novel’s gruesomely persuasive texture. fine, but is it a good yarn? Pages flick past, scenes and conversations burn themselves into your mind’s eye, and the set-pieces feel eerily familiar. These are usually indicators that a story is being told well. Adam White Here Are The Young Men by Rob Doyle (Lilliput Press) is out now
The ChIldren ACT by ian Mcewan
Part courtroom drama, part tale of midlife crisis, Ian Mcewan’s new novel sets out to raise big questions about religion and the difficulties faced by women with demanding careers. fiona is a judge who must rule on whether a teenage Jehovah’s Witness has the right to refuse leukaemia treatment; meanwhile, her husband announces he’s having a fling with a young woman because he feels neglected in the bedroom. not for the first time, Mcewan depends on melodrama to resolve the issues, with an increasingly absurd plot that turns on stalking and suicide. This is a busy time of year for publishers and for readers too as the approach of Christmas concentrates minds on what books we would like to get or give as presents. There is a bumper crop this season with lots to choose from in every genre. Here is a pick of the best of Irish crime fiction that has just arrived into the bookshops. Brandon have brought out some cracking books. Black’s Creek by Sam Millar is a dark thriller from an author who is no stranger to real-life crime, while The Waiting Game by Sheila Bulger sees the return of DI Ellen Kelly who unravels another murder case. A slightly more offbeat crime story is Sister Caravaggio from Liberties Press which is an intriguing team effort from the late Maeve Binchy, Peter nningham, Neil Donnelly, Cormac Cunningham, Millar, Éilis Ní Duibhne, Mary O’Donnell and Peter Sheridan. Online forums are hunting grounds for serial killers. Or so Yvonne thinks but can she get the Garda interested? Can Anybody Help Me? (Quercus Press) is the debut thriller from RTÉ’s Sinéad Crowley. Dr Kate Pearson returns in Louise Philips’ Last Kiss (Hachette Ireland). Louise promises that Dr Pearson and Garda hunk DI O’Connor ‘have a moment’ as they hunt down a female serial killer in a story that kicks off with a crime of passion and includes bondage scenes researched in Dublin! Tana French has fans like Harlan Coben, Kate Mosse and Stephen King. In her latest novel, The Secret Place (Hachette Ireland), Detectives Stephen Moran and Antoinette Conway investigate the yearold murder of a schoolboy in this tense, layered, psychological thriller. It is not just modern crime that comes under the spotlight. Joe Joyce brings back his hero, Paul Duggan, the Army intelligence agent tasked with keeping Ireland neutral in World War II, in Echobeat (Liberties Press). It’s 1941 and Duggan teams up with Special Branch detective Peter Gifford to find out what the Germans are up to in Dublin and if the British plan to invade from the North. Positive attitude: Lewis Hamilton
Fear and loathing rife at Mercedes, says Alonso The air may have been cleared, but ahead of this weekend’s italian Grand Prix, it is an uneasy truce which exists between Mercedes pair Lewis hamilton and Nico rosberg. rosberg has apologised for deliberately causing a collision with hamilton in Belgium – the latest in a long line of improprieties by both men over this season. however, Fernando alonso (below), who had a similar scrap with hamilton in 2007 at McLaren, is sure resentment and paranoia are still inevitable at Mercedes. asked whether he thought the Mercedes garage is divided, Ferrari’s alonso replied: ‘Definitely. it’s not only the drivers, it’s the mechanics, the engineers, people who are that little bit more friendly with one driver than the other. The driver’s mind as well, it changes when you are in a competition against other teams or against your teammate. Your mind is always trying to see if there is something weird going on that weekend, or something that could go in favour of the other driver.’ With a 29-point deficit to leader rosberg, hamilton at least heads to Monza with a positive mindset. ‘My aim for the weekend is to claw back the gap in the drivers’ championship,’ said hamilton. ‘it’s as big as it’s been all season so i’ve a lot of work ahead of me, but anything can happen in this sport.’ rosberg agreed, saying: ‘With the season-ending double-points race in abu Dhabi anything can happen. i’m focused on taking maximum points in the remaining races and i know the team is too, starting this weekend.’

EuropE’S captain paul McGinley put the final touches to his ryder Cup team yesterday when he named padraig Harrington, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria olazabal as vice-captains. The trio, who have 17 ryder Cup appearances between them, join Des Smyth and Sam Torrance on McGinley’s backroom staff for the clash with the united States at Gleneagles later this month. It is unusual for a captain to have as many deputies, and McGinley said: ‘I know it’s been common in the past to have three or four vice-captains but I feel an extra person is justified due to the additional workload which comes from being the home team. ‘padraig is my oldest friend on Tour and is a guy I have known most of my life, so I know what he can bring to the team. Quintana out of Vuelta with broken shoulder prE-rACE favourite Nairo Quintana crashed out of the Vuelta a Espana yesterday before a thrilling battle between the remaining contenders on the climb to the summit finish of stage 11 at Santuario de San Miguel de Aralar. While Astana’s Fabio Aru took the stage win, Quintana’s Movistar team-mate Alejandro Valverde led red jersey holder Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) over the line in second and third.
Chris Froome appeared in danger of losing significant time as he was again off his game, but the Team Sky man dug deep and was just behind in fifth place to remain very much in contention in the GC standings as he moves up to fourth overall, one minute 21 seconds behind Contador. Contador took over in the race leader’s red on Tuesday’s time trial, when Quintana suffered a dramatic crash to lose three minutes.
And the 25-year-old Colombian was in the wars again early on this 153.4km stage from pamplona, caught in an early accident in the peloton and taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken shoulder bone. His Movistar team confirmed his withdrawal in a tweet: ‘Confirmation: @NairoQuinCo has suffered a displaced fracture in his right-hand scapula, will undergo surgery on Thursday (10am). £LaVuelta.’
is someone the spectators love as well as being very popular with all the players. He is also a person I respect very much. ‘Finally, Jose Maria’s passion for the ryder Cup is recognised the world over. It was obvious in his legendary partnership with Seve [Ballesteros] and was so very apparent at Medinah, so I’m delighted he has accepted my invitation.’ olazabal (above, right) captained Europe to their famous comeback win at Medinah in 2012 and said: ‘It’s an occasion I love being part of. It is unique.’ Irishman Harrington (above, left) said: ‘I don’t necessarily think paul needs much help. But he knows I’m happy to get involved.’ However Scotland’s paul Lawrie, who had been widely tipped to be a vice-captain, wrote on Twitter: ‘Extremely disappointed not to be involved. But all the best to all of the European team.’

Irish ready for Georgia after Oman victory FRIENDLY REP OF IRELAND......................2 OMAN.......................................0 by PARAIC MORGAN Kevin Doyle and Alex Pearce ensured the Republic of ireland will head into their euro 2016 qualifying campaign on the back of a victory as oman fell by the wayside in Dublin. Doyle’s 20th-minute header and Pearce’s late strike handed manager Martin o’neill just the second win of his reign to date, which now amounts to eight games, in the final friendly before competitive action gets under way in Georgia on Sunday. The omanis represented modest opposition and ireland might have won more comfortably on a night when they hit the woodwork twice in front of a crowd of just 14,376 at the Aviva Stadium. Quite what o’neill will have learned from a game in which he rested most of his key men is a matter for debate, but there were positives other than the score.

everton midfielder Darron Gibson got 70 minutes under his belt in his first appearance for ireland since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament while on international duty in october last year, while veteran goalkeeper Shay Given played the first half on his return to the ireland fold. o’neill, who saw his side lose 5-1 to Portugal in their last game, will field a much stronger starting Xi in Tbilisi, and his players will have to be much more clinical if they are to return with the positive result they crave. in a low-key start, Hoolahan and Robbie Brady both had shots blocked at source and Mohammed Al Siyabi and eid Al Farsi fired wide from long distance with Given only mildly concerned. But the game came to life with 20 minutes gone when Doyle climbed highest to head Brady’s inswinging corner past goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi. From that point on, ireland looked capable of adding to their tally with each attack, and midfielder Anthony Pilkington and Pearce both went close.

Doyle delivers but McClean ruled out of Georgia tie by pARAiC MORGAn JAMeS MCCleAN is out of the Republic of Ireland’s opening euro 2016 qualifier in Georgia. The 25-year-old Wigan midfielder has not regained full match-fitness after recovering from an ankle injury and manager Martin O’Neill has reluctantly ruled him out of Sunday’s game in Tbilisi. O’Neill had hoped to play McClean in Wednesday night’s 2-0 friendly victory over Oman at the Aviva Stadium, but he did not even make the bench and has now been withdrawn from the squad. The manager said: ‘James McClean, unfortunately, has not come through. It’s not that he has picked up any fresh injury or anything like that. James is disappointed. ‘My concern with James really is while the injury has healed up, he

hasn’t played that much contact football. We put him in yesterday, he didn’t do too badly at all, but I thought everything was just maybe too much for him.’ McClean’s absence will be a blow with O’Neill having used him extensively in his previous games in charge, but he was at least able to take positives from a win over modest opposition. After a tepid start, Kevin Doyle headed the Republic into a 20th-minute lead from Robbie Brady’s corner, his 14th senior international goal. However, despite creating a series of chances – Alex Pearce and substitute Aiden McGeady both had efforts cleared off the line and David Meyler and McGeady also hit the woodwork – they were unable to kill the game off until Pearce stabbed home nine minutes from time. It was his second goal for Ireland with the first also coming against Oman on his debut two years ago. O’Neill said: ‘I thought beforehand that we would need the game, and I think it was proved.’
Ryder Cup senior role set to test Harrington mettle
Modest: Padraig Harrington
PADRAig HARRingTOn admits being a vice-captain in this year’s Ryder Cup will tell him if he is cut out to lead a European team himself in the future. Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Miguel Angel Jimenez were named as Paul Mcginley’s final three assistants on Wednesday, joining Des Smyth and Sam Torrance on the backroom staff for gleneagles.
Olazabal was captain for the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ in 2012, but Harrington and Jimenez are both candidates to fulfil the role in years
‘Being a vice-captain will tell me a lot more’ to come, along with the likes of Darren Clarke and Thomas Bjorn. Asked if he would be interested
in becoming captain, Harrington told Sky Sports news: ‘Absolutely i’d be interested and part of being a vice-captain is really finding out whether you are suitable to do it. ‘it’s a different job being the captain than a player. Being a player is quite a selfish thing, it’s all about you. The captaincy, managing 12 people, being able to get on with all of those people and being able to organise things, its a
different sort of scenario. ‘My record might say, yeah, i look like being a future captain, but to be honest being a vice-captain and getting in behind the scenes will tell me a lot more, and will also tell the people in the know a lot more about whether i am possibly the right man to do the job.’
