Twin boys killed by brother in bloodbath The Queen of Mean bows out

Joan Rivers, ers, the high pr priestess of raucous slapdowns, apdowns, has died aged 81. The acid-tongued comedian, who broke through the maledominated realm of late-night talk shows, was hospitalised last week when she went into cardiac arrest after a routine medical procedure. Daughter Melissa said she died in New York yesterday.

Twin brothers aged nine were murdered in a bloodbath by their older half-brother at their home yesterday, gardaí believe. Thomas and Patrick O’Driscoll, who were described by a neighbour as ‘a pair of rascals’, were stabbed to death at their home in Charleville, north Cork. The boys’ half brother, Jonathan O’Driscoll, 21, was found dead 15 km away in Buttevant. it’s understood he took his own life. Holding back tears, close relatives of the twins said they did not want to talk to reporters about the deaths.

by david raleigH A well-informed source said: ‘The place is like a butcher’s parlour, or an abattoir. Those poor little boys suffered a shocking death.’ A sibling of the twins, who are members of the settled Travelling community, discovered their bodies in separate bedrooms shortly before 5pm and contacted their parents. The victims’ mother and father were 8km away in Kilmallock, Co Limerick, when their twin boys were set upon and killed inside the family home in Deerpark.

The scene is located a short distance outside Charleville town near O’Rourke’s Cross on the main n20 Limerick-to-Cork road. it’s unclear why the horrific double murder happened, however sources said the boys’ killer must have ‘just snapped’. A HSE Air Corps air ambulance was dispatched to the area, however it was quickly stood down when it became clear the twins were dead at the scene. Gardaí in Charleville are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.

Rose of Tralee chief hits out at ‘boorish’ critics in letter

THE executive chairman of the Rose of Tralee has released a letter defending the festival against ‘boorish nonsense from uninformed opinion writers’. Last month Boston-born Maria Walsh became the first gay winner of the pageant, but the festival has been criticised for being outdated and painting a stereotypical view of women. Now, in an Crown: Maria Walsh open letter, Anthony O’Gara has sought to address misconceptions that he believes have been unfairly portrayed to the public and laid at the door of the 55-year-old competition. In the letter, Mr O’Gara describes the Rose of Tralee as ‘one of the most important threads to connect Irish people throughout the world with home’. Responding to media critics, he highlights that the annual festival brings in approximately €12million to the local economy, celebrates exceptional women, and cites the important boost which charities receive from being associated with the event. He says: ‘The Rose of Tralee is not all about: Paddy Whackery, Colleens

on Parade, Stepford Wives tricked out as national stereotypes. ‘We don’t have a 1950s ethos – we have a proud history and each year the Roses reflect women as they are today. Their ethos is ours.’ In an opinion piece published by the Irish Independent last month, columnist Martina Devlin said that the Kerry-based competition conveyed a ‘fossilised view of colleens’ and effectively boiled down to a ‘parade of shiny haired girls in swishy frocks’. She wrote that she ‘was not prepared to laugh off that paddywhackery masquerading as Irish culture which perpetuates the myth that our land is populated by agreeable, winsome colleens’. Appearing to refer directly to the article, Mr O’Gara says: ‘Roses and the rest of us live in the real world where bad things happen and people struggle. During the festival they are celebrating and tend to show us their positive side, but let’s not patronise them as “winsome colleens”. ‘That might be seen as being plain bitchy.’ The correspondence closes with the message: ‘By all means, be a contrary bystander… but remember this, a week at the Rose of Tralee Festival might just be the thing to bring a little magic back into your life.’ This year’s winner Maria Walsh will be on the Late Late Show tonight to talk about her experience.

The Point? The O2? No, the 3Arena THE venue formerly known as the Point, and then The O2, has undergone yet another namechanging rebirth. After months of speculation following Three Ireland’s €780million takeover of the rival phone company 02, Dubliners will now be heading towards the eponymous 3Arena for concerts and other events. To celebrate the christening, Three Ireland will host 3Arena Illuminated, a four-day light show spectacular complete with 3D projections. The event will start next Wednesday. Elaine Carey, the company’s communication officer, said that the mobile network is delighted with the rebranding. ‘As we hand the re-mastered 3Arena over to the people of Ireland to enjoy, we have no

doubt that they will capture many incredible memories for years to come.’ The Live Nation entertainment amphitheatre, which holds up to 13,500 people, was previously called the Point Depot until 2007. While the name change might spell good news for Three, in a

light-hearted poll on gometro.ie, readers voted for a revert to the ’eighties title. ‘The Point’ (42%) was closely followed by 3Arena (24%) and 3PointO in the list of suggested names that got the thumbs up. Ant & Dec’s Takeaway on Tour heralds in the new era next week.

Minister warns over US Microsoft data case bid by MicHAEL McHUgH

The Government has said the way the US has forced disclosure of foreign data from Microsoft in Ireland is objectionable and warned it could have implications across europe. It followed court action taken by American drug trafficking prosecutors to compel the technology giant to hand over details of an email account held on its Dublin servers. Minister for eU Affairs and Data Protection Dara Murphy said a US district court judge had decided to lift a stay on the execution of a criminal search warrant for the information stored by Microsoft, but warned due process and an international treaty should be adhered to. ‘Co-operation in the area of law enforcement is a fundamental element of our international relations, in particular with our partners in the US, which is why the issue of the transfer of the data itself is not objectionable, but rather the process that is being utilised,’ the Minister said. ‘We must ensure that our data is afforded the maximum protection available and only transferred to other jurisdictions after the process set down in the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty has been followed.’ Faith in cloud computing, where vast quantities of information are stored on servers rather than the us-

Minister Murphy said compliance with the warrant may result in Microsoft and other US companies with operations in the eU which are served with such warrants in the future, being in breach of

the Irish Data Protection Acts and the eU Data Protection Directive. A Microsoft spokesperson said: ‘We will not be turning over the email. everyone agrees this case can and will proceed to the appeals court. ‘This is simply about finding the appropriate procedure for that to happen.’

Councils told they can pass on 15% property tax cut to homeowners

DUBLIN’S four local councils, as well as those in Wicklow, Meath and Kildare, will all be able to pass on a 15 per cent cut in Local Property Tax next year – but will have to subsidise less financially sound counties. The Dublin and commuter belt councils are among 10 local authorities in this position and the cut in tax is at the discretion of local councillors. Announcing details of the Local Property Tax (LPT), Environment Minister Alan Kelly said that 80 per cent of this tax will be retained locally to fund ‘vital public services’ next year.

The remaining 20 per cent will be ‘re-distributed to provide top-up funding to certain local authority areas that have lower property tax bases’. He added that the Local Property Tax is ‘designed to become a stable and

‘Tax will be stable and sustainable’ sustainable source of funding for communities’. However, Sinn Féin has accused the Government of ‘duping’ the people. Rubbishing Mr Kelly’s pledge that no council would

receive less funding than in 2014, finance spokesman Pearse Doherty said that many counties have seen close to 50 per cent funding cuts from 2011 to 2014. He added: ‘Under the LPT system these counties are now receiving this historically low level of funding only because they are being propped up by the surpluses of other counties. ‘How can these authorities ever hope to build their services back to levels demanded by citizens?’ He described LPT as ‘a complicated, regressive and insufficient way of funding our local democracies’.

Mystery: Raonaid Murray

gardaí in fresh appeal over Raonaid killing ON the 15th anniversary of the murder of Dublin teenager Raonaid Murray, gardaí have renewed their appeal for information from the public. the 17-year-old’s body was discovered at Silchester Crescent in Glenageary in the early hours of September 4, 1999, just 500 yards from her home. She had left a friend at Scott’s pub in Dun Laoghaire at 11.20pm to go home to change before going on to a nightclub. She was found dead at 12.33am. Gardaí said that a reward is still on offer from Crimestoppers – Freephone 1800 25 00 25 – for critical information received.

60 seconds Born in Paris to Moroccan parents, Canada-based artist 2Fik is renowned for ‘reinterpreting’ paintings by the masters. His latest work will be unveiled at the Tiger Dublin Fringe.

For this year’s Fringe Festival you’ll be creating a largescale photograph based on Daniel Maclise’s iconic 1854 painting, The Marriage Of Strongbow and Aoife. What will it entail? I’ll be in George’s

Dock from 9am today where I’ll be ‘reimagining’ the painting as a massive photograph. The idea is to keep the same composition as the original painting but to give each of the characters a contemporary makeover. I’ve spent a great deal of time analysing the painting. In order to construct a new portrait, I’ve had to decide on the order I’d ‘play’ each character in. I’ll start the day with a long beard and hair on my head, then by the end of the eight-hour shoot I’ll be completely bald, having donned various wigs and dresses to take on the female parts.

living for extended periods in several different countries has prompted me to question my own understanding of race, nationality and religion – and of how fluid they can be. It’s really important for me to break down prejudices. I remember having to take the metro through Paris the day after 9/11 and people changed places simply so they didn’t have to sit beside me. I like to think by inviting the viewer to laugh and have fun with my work I’m also tackling bigotry and breaking down barriers.

Fossil find uncovers ancient giant THE word big does not do justice to this newly-discovered dinosaur that shook the Earth 77million years ago. Standing two storeys high, it was almost as long as three double-decker buses. Its skeleton, found by fossil hunters in Patagonia, Argentina, is the most complete remains of a titanosaur recovered anywhere in the world. And remarkably, the beast, called Dreadnoughtus schrani, was still growing when it died, say experts. Seven times bigger than a T Rex, it would have been an ‘intimidating sight,’ said palaeontologist Kenneth Lacovara, of Drexel University in Philadelphia, who found the fossil.

We forget lyrics when sexy fans are at gigs 5 Seconds Of Summer boys admit hot girls cause bouts of Amnesia

SecondS of Summer moan that the only downside to performing in front of hot female fans is that they find themselves forgetting their lyrics. The Aussie boys admitted they had been left red-faced after being distracted by attractive gig-goers. ‘We have definitely forgotten the lyrics before,’ guitarist Michael clifford, 18, told Guilty Pleasures in an exclusive chat. ‘It’s really embarrassing because you’ll be singing the words and then you’ll see (a hot girl). It’s not like “wow I love you”, it’s just “oh you’re really attractive”.’

The She Looks So Perfect foursome are all single and 18-year-old lead singer Luke Hemmings said it might be hard to find true love as the band gains popularity. ‘I wouldn’t mind a girlfriend,’ he said, ‘but I don’t think it would work, there’s just not a lot of time.’ The chart-topping band – which also includes drummer Ashton Irwin and bassist calum Hood – insist they would never let fame go to their heads. ‘Ultimately we’re just a pop-rock band who play music. We’re nothing special, we’re just dudes. 5 Seconds of Summer’s latest single, Amnesia, is out on Sunday.

The 22-car school run

Obama turns up in giant motorcade to visit children learning about Nato summit

by JOEL TAyLOR CHILDREN learning about Nato had a very special guest yesterday – Barack Obama. The US president joined British Prime Minister David Cameron on a visit to a primary school. He showed his touch with the Welsh tongue by greeting pupils – who had entered the school through metaldetectors – with ‘bore da’, meaning ‘good morning’. Earlier, about 300 well-wishers waited, some for four hours, to see the president’s 22-car motorcade make its way to Mount Pleasant Primary School in Newport. Britain refuses to rule out use of air strikes against terror group BRITAIN must be prepared to use ‘everything we have in our armoury’ to take on the Islamic State, British Prime Minister David Cameron said yesterday. He said he would not rule out air strikes on the terror group’s strongholds. And he raised the prospect of launching attacks on militants in Syrian territory without the approval of president Bashar al-Assad. ‘We need to show real resolve and determination,’ Mr Cameron said. ‘We need to use every power and everything in our armoury with our allies, with those on the ground, to make sure we do everything we can to squeeze this dreadful organisation out of existence.’ Speaking from the Nato summit in south Wales, Mr Cameron said he would consider joining the US in launching air strikes on IS ‘if it was in the national interest’.

Cuts the mustard: A German warship arrives in Bremen with 23 containers of poison gas surrendered by the Syrian government But he rejected calls from MPs who say that Britain should make an ally of Mr Assad in an effort to curb the group. He said there would be no legal issue with targeting IS in Syria without the dictator’s backing or approval.

Cancer boy rests with his mother at bedside TUMOUR boy Ashya King has spent a comfortable night in a Spanish hospital with his mother at his bedside, officials said. The five-year-old (pictured), who has a brain tumour, will be seeing a cancer specialist in Malaga. Yesterday, British prime minister David Cameron said ‘common sense’ had prevailed to allow Ashya to be reunited with his parents Brett and Naghmeh, adding: ‘It is tragic they were separated.’ The couple were freed from custody in Madrid on Tuesday. Police arrested them after they fled from Southampton General Hospital in the UK with Ashya in search of treatment.

UnI gets a kicking from angry Asian students over ‘racist joke’ email A PRESTIGIOUS university kicked up a race storm after it sent a welcome email to Asian students addressed to Kung Fu Panda. The London School of Economics made the faux pas when mailing its official certificate of confirmation to all new undergraduates, many of whom come from China. Instead of addressing them by their real name, each student was referred to as the DreamWorks character. The missive reads: ‘This is to certify that Aa-Kung Fu, Panda Tiger Test Test has firmly accepted an unconditional offer of admission to the London School of Economics and Political Science for the full-time, three-year programme of undergraduate study.’ Nearly 70 per cent of LSE students were born overseas, with a third of those coming from Asia. Although the admissions office sent

by nicOLE LE MARiE a mass apology 17 minutes later, some recipients were annoyed it had ‘slyly avoided’ mentioning the test name. Christy Pang is set to begin a history degree at the Westminster-based institution and told student newspaper The Tab: ‘I thought it was some kind of racist joke at first, but it turned out to be some sort of a test.’ Another student, who was holidaying in China when he received the email, said: ‘I can certainly see the funny side of the email. ‘But I’m deeply worried about the flagrant racial stereotyping which LSE have seemingly refused to apologise for in their vague follow-up.’ However, an LSE spokesperson said the use of the name ‘merely reflects that a member of staff who set up the test record is a fan of the film’.

Cowardly approach to hare abuse needs good drenching

D

ear editor, with the current ice bucket challenge craze in mind, I would like to nominate the Minister for arts and Heritage, Heather Humphreys, to undertake this drenching. after all she has poured cold water on the idea of Ireland becoming a civilised country in terms of its treatment of its natural heritage with her approval of the 2014/2015 live hare coursing licence. Hare coursing is animal cruelty. It causes immeasurable suffering and death to thousands of Irish hares as well as greyhounds. For what? So that a morally diseased layer of Irish society can get their kicks from gambling on the outcome of a chase between a live hare and two greyhounds. Ireland remains one of the few countries in the world that still permits the live baiting of greyhounds. Our nearest neighbours have banned this activity and have put in place effective legislation to curb any transgressions of the law. Irish political life has yet to produce a minister that understands that live hare coursing has no social merit, is anti-wildlife and leaves Ireland’s reputation abroad in shreds. Where is the political courage to

refuse the application for this annual hareabuse licence and to consign live hare coursing to history? By renewing the hare coursing licence, Minister Humphreys has passed up an opportunity to give direction on the Government’s policy when it comes to protecting animals and our natural heritage. It is time to let the cold water flow over the minister’s head. at least it will remind her that she has the political backbone of an ice cube. John Tierney, Association of Hunt Saboteurs, Dublin 1 ■ and so the housing madness begins again with people once again so desperate to get a foot on the ladder, they have queued for five days to buy a house. Will Irish people never learn? Have you forgotten that the country fell on its arse not too long ago? although it’s a safe bet that when that happens again, you’ll get half your mortgage written off anyway. I’m getting out of here now before we do another cycle… Once is enough for those of us with a bit of cop on. Unwilling To Bail Out Again

The storming of Calais Hundreds of migrants jump barriers to board ferry for Britain by NICOLE LE MARIE FERRY companies have demanded that security in Calais be improved after hundreds of migrants tried to storm ships bound for Britain. More than 230 asylum seekers jumped barriers and scaled fences to get to the vehicle hold, forcing staff to turn a fire hose on them. The group, thought to be mostly young Eritrean men, repeatedly tried to board the ferry until staff raised the ramp and riot police rushed in. It came as the mayor of Calais threatened to blockade the northern French port unless Britain helped tackle its migrant problem. Natacha Bouchart claimed residents had been ‘taken hostage’ by the 1,200 migrants in the area. A SUSPECTED illegal immigrant managed to fold himself behind the front seat of a woman’s Fiat Panda before escaping once they reached the UK. Shocked Sue Taber travelled back to the UK on the Eurotunnel and when she arrived home the man leapt out and fled.

Bold: Migrants rush staff Pictures: mark salt ‘I invite the English authorities to come to Calais to see what we suffer every day,’ she said. Two attempts were made to board the MyFerryLink ship Berlioz – the first involving about 90 people and the second about 150. A P&O ship then tried to dock – but the crew were ordered to wait in the inner harbour until it was safe. Communications director Chris Laming said staff had written to the Calais chamber of commerce to demand better security. ‘There is no doubt that Britain is seen by these migrants as an El Dorado,’ he said.

Israel blocks Gaza MEPs AN MEP leading a delegation of colleagues on a fact finding mission to Gaza has accused the Israeli government of denying them access. Sinn Féin Northern Ireland MEP Martina Anderson said: ‘The Israeli government refused us, 13 MEPs from six countries, entry into Gaza on the grounds that our visit is “not directly concerned with the provision of humanitarian assistance’,” she said. ‘This beggars belief.’

Bucket list not a flyer MAlAySIA Airlines has renamed a promotional campaign asking people what countries are on their ‘bucket list’ to visit after acknowledging it was inappropriate given the two deadly disasters this year. A bucket list is a term used to describe a list of activities that people want to do before they die. The airline said that it had withdrawn the title because it was ‘found to be inappropriate at this point in time’.

The casting of regular baddie Strong raises our immediate suspicions but nothing is clear-cut in this thriller that makes good use of the repetitive format. each day becomes more complex and revealing

as Christine uncovers disturbing facts and leaves notes for herself to use the following day. it’s a suspenseful, if familiar, setup that recalls memento (starring fellow australian guy Pearce) and adam Sandler vehicle 50 First Dates. Kidman is terrific as the confused woman desperate to regain her identity, unsure of who to trust and petrified as to the horrors of her past. meanwhile, Firth and Strong put in enigmatic performances and anne-marie Duff has a small but key role later in the film. it’s melodramatic in parts but that’s to be expected. even if this film can’t compete with memento’s complexities, it benefits from a good source novel, not to mention sophisticated direction and performances that elevate it from the schlock genre. Life Of Crime is an unusual film: it’s slow-moving for a comedy-thriller but not deep or character-driven enough to be a satisfying drama. But it’s still a funny set-up with laugh-outloud moments and strong performances. It’s also great to see Aniston in a slightly quirky film rather than a mainstream comedy. Chilli factor: Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) has a nose for spices

Cuisine culture clash Helen Mirren as a Frenchwoman is just one of this film’s curious decisions – but it’s still a heartwarming blend of curry comedy and French dressing based on the novel by Richard C Morais. Om Puri plays the Indian restaurateur who brings his family to live in France. Finding an idyllic spot, he’s determined to open a curry house bang opposite a posh French eatery run by the snobby Madame Mallory (Mirren, throwing the occasional French phrase into accented English conversation). Early iMF repayment deal to be discussed MEP Brian HayES has confirmed that the Eurogroup will discuss the early repayment of ireland’s iMF loan next week. He said the president of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, confirmed the news yesterday after Mr Hayes put the question to him. Mr Hayes made reference to ‘the extreme sacrifices’ made by the irish people throughout the recent years of austerity and Mr Dijsselbloem recognised that an early repayment would equate to a ‘large benefit’ in terms of interest rates. Mr Hayes was this week appointed shadow rapporteur on the Money Market Funds proposal, to be reviewed by the Economic and Monetary affairs Committee in the European Parliament. The irish Government has yet to make a formal request for an early repayment of outstanding debt. n HouSEHolD net worth increased nationally by 0.9 per cent in the first three months of the year, according to the Central Bank’s Q1 financial account report. it was the seventh quarterly rise and national net worth stood at €508.5billion overall – or €110,312 per capita. Debt as a percentage of income fell by three percentage points (to 184.5 per cent). The decline reflected a reduction in household debt and, to a lesser extent, a small increase in disposable income. The rise in net worth over the quarter was partly tempered, however, by a decline in housing assets of €2.1billion. n aEr linGuS passengers were up seven per cent in august. ‘cody has to be brave and start with shefflin’ by pAuL kEAnE

KilKenny legend John Henderson has urged Brian Cody to be brave and to start Henry Shefflin in Sunday’s All-ireland Hurling Final. Shefflin, 35, is chasing a record 10th winner’s medal but hasn’t started a single game in this year’s Championship. He has come on in their last four games and has scored in all but one of those ties, so clearly still has plenty left to offer. The general opinion is that Shefflin should be held in reserve again, as an impact sub to potentially turn a tight game in Kilkenny’s favour. But three-time All-ireland medallist Henderson says

‘In my view, if he’s good enough then I’d prefer to start him’ that if Shefflin is fit, which he appears to be, then he should be named from the start. ‘He has been kept in reserve up to now but my view is that if he’s good enough then i’d prefer to start him,’ said Henderson. ‘i think he has a lot more to offer when starting, in terms of the vision that he has, the experience he has and the fact that he’s going to command so much respect from the Tipp lads. ‘i think if he’s brought on to win a match, then it’s probably too late. if he’s brought on for a cameo role, it’s not great either. ‘So i’d be hoping that if he’s fit like they say he is and ready to go then he should go from the start.’ Cats boss Cody is unlikely to announce his team until

the weekend, as normal. Henderson feels another big angle is who marks Seamus Callanan, Tipp’s red hot forward. The ex-full-back reckons JJ delaney could get the task. ‘Seamus Callanan has been phenomenal but i’m looking forward to what JJ has in store for him and that particular match-up,’ said Henderson. ‘if Seamus comes through that as the top player then he is the top player of the year, undoubtedly so.’ Henderson says his heart is behind Kilkenny but he believes it must be Tipp’s turn. Tipp have only beaten Kilkenny once in the Championship since 1991 while Kilkenny edged a tight league final earlier this year. ‘The one thing that worries me is how Kilkenny keep having tight results against Tipp and i fear that it could just be Tipp’s turn now,’ said Henderson.

tipperary boss confident his players can channel ‘winning spirit of 2010’ He Has stopped short of guaranteeing another famous Tipperary win, but manager eamon O’shea admitted it does feel a little like 2010 again. It’s four years now since Tipp last beat Kilkenny in the Championship, their one win over their great rivals since 1991 – though it was arguably the most important of all their meetings. Kilkenny were going for five-ina-row back then while Tipp were seeking to end a near decade long barren streak at all-Ireland level. Despite failing to win the Munster title that year, they bounced back with a thrilling run through to the qualifiers and eventually beat Kilkenny. It’s shaping up as a carbon copy this year with no Munster title but lots of momentum following big wins over Galway and Dublin – and Kilkenny waiting in the final again.

Countdown: eamon O’Shea ‘The fact that we have momentum from those wins is the same (as 2010),’ acknowledged O’shea, a coach back then under Liam sheedy. ‘We have got that momentum from winning games and showing a bit of improvement with each game. That’s where the comparison is valid. But I wouldn’t be doing any simple

mathematics and saying, “therefore the result is going to be the same”. That would be wrong. You have to take these things as they come.’ O’shea pointed to Kilkenny’s performance in the last 10 minutes of their semi-final win over Limerick as a key factor in what makes them great. ‘all successful teams have that great desire to keep going and that’s what you saw, that’s a formidable weapon,’ he added. ‘When you ally that to their natural abilities and strengths, you get a really good team.’ But Tipp are ticking all the boxes themselves, too. Of their six starting forwards against Cork in the semi-final, five of them could arguably shoot a match winning tally on their own. ‘There still has to be more improvement overall,’ said O’shea. ‘But the players know that themselves.’

The pair avoided any eye contact, keeping their expressions stern. rosberg, aware he has been cast as the ‘bad guy’, showed signs of tension, cracking his neck side to side whenever he heard a question he didn’t wish to answer. Hamilton was softly spoken, calm and thoughtful. Cast as the victim, an underdog 29 points adrift and with bad luck against him, he’s hoping the narrative of this season will be a Hollywoodstyle comeback where the ‘good guy’ triumphs in the end. in case you missed it, nico and lewis had a coming-together on lap two of the Belgian Grand Prix, which took the englishman out of the points. rosberg, Hamilton and the team’s

‘I was not proud of the way it went in Belgium’ senior management met last week to mend the fences and establish rules for the rest of the season. Their statements to the media since have all been on message, about moving forward. However, their body language told a different story. ‘i took the week to think about [what i did at Spa] and discussed it with the team, and decided it was me that needed to take responsibility for it,’ said nico ahead of this weekend’s italian Grand Prix. ‘in Spa i was not proud of the way it went.’ He rebuked the notion he had been

With two drivers fighting tooth and nail for the same prize, how do they stop turning their garage into a battlefield, with the loyalties of the pit crews split down the middle? Hamilton said that, despite Spa being in the past and that he’s moving on, he cannot bank on nico giving him room through the first turn on Sunday. ‘Trust is a big word and not one that i would apply to racing on the track,’ he revealed. ‘Me and nico have been racing together for a long time, we have a good foundation and that’s what we’re gonna work on.’

Strong Dundalk ‘catchable’ but a tough test for St Pat’s kILLIAn BrEnnAn believes dundalk getting a result at richmond Park tonight will mean St Patrick’s Athletic’s reign as champions will be all but over. It’s a scenario, however, Brennan and his St Pat’s team-mates will be busting a gut to prevent happening in their own back yard. Midfielder Brennan was there with St Pat’s last year when they held their nerve to grind out the big results late in the season to see them over the line. So dundalk, six points clear of

second-placed Cork City and 11 over St Pat’s, will earn anything they get in Inchicore this evening. ‘dundalk are the team to catch

‘We have to beat them tonight… bottom line’ and we still feel they are catchable,’ said Brennan. ‘But we have to beat them tonight. That’s the bottom line, we need the three points. ‘They are looking really strong. They are scoring at will. But they

are also conceding. We’re at home, and we should take confidence from that. ‘We’re two good teams who like to get the ball down and pass it. We’ve nothing to lose at this stage, so we’ll be giving it a right go. (But) if they beat us tonight they would pretty much have the league won, I feel. So we don’t want that. ‘It’s going to be a tense affair. They’re not going to get anything easy off us.’ Brennan believes dundalk this year are a mirror image of St Pat’s

in 2013. ‘It’s everything rolled into one,’ said Brennan on it all needing to fall into place to win a league. ‘At the moment we haven’t been playing too well. And in the games we have played well in, we haven’t been picking up results. I think that’s the difference this year compared to last. ‘I think dundalk have gone right until the end, scoring late goals in games. That could be the difference. dundalk look fairly strong. We have nothing

to fear, insists confident Keane Roy Keane has insisted the Republic of Ireland have nothing to be frightened of as they prepare to finally launch the Martin o’neill era in earnest. after 10 months of dress rehearsals, which have seen o’neill’s team line up in friendlies against Latvia, Poland, Serbia, Turkey, Italy, Costa Rica, Portugal and oman with varying degrees of success, they will take to the main stage on Sunday when they open their euro 2016 campaign against Georgia in Tbilisi. It has been a long wait for the 62-year-old and his assistant since their appointment in november last year – and both men are relishing the opportunity to get down to the serious business. They will do so in testing circumstances as the Group D campaign gets under way at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo arena, where a hostile welcome is assured. However, Keane said: ‘We are looking forward to it, of course, we have said that for the last few months. Friendlies are all well and good, but it’s down to business now over

Strangely enough, I’m sure if we qualify, you will be the first to celebrate and have a jolly-up over there ‘From the players’ point of view, and from the manager and the staff – we have got a top, top manager and we will be ready. I don’t know what you are worried about. ‘The reason we play these games

‘Everyone seems frightened to death’ is to get involved in tough qualifying matches. It’s going to be tough, obviously, but my goodness, we have got to look forward to the game. People are on about a hostile atmosphere – brilliant, bring it on.’ That level of defiance from a man who led both his country and club Manchester United into battle all over the world should perhaps not come as any surprise, and victory in Tbilisi would represent the perfect

start to a group which is likely to be tight throughout with Ireland, Scotland, Poland and Georgia likely to find themselves locked in a battle for second place behind Germany. Keane, 43, said: ‘It’s a tough game, particularly away from home, but from the angle I’m looking at, certainly over the next few days, we have just got to make sure we get our own act together, make sure we are right tactically and we pick the right team and if we are at it, we can give them a tough game. ‘I think every game is going to be vital for us. We have said since the draw was made no doubt Germany will be hot favourites, but every minute of every game will be vital. There will be vital moments and we need to be ready.’ o’neill and Keane put their players through their paces in Malahide yesterday morning. Wigan Winger James McClean has been ruled out after failing to regain full match fitness following a spell on the sidelines with an ankle problem, while Sheffield Wednesday keeper Kieren Westwood is a doubt after coming down with tonsillitis.

Given ‘not guaranteed starting place’ Republic of ireland boss Martin O’Neill is remaining coy over Shay Given’s chances of starting the opening euro 2016 qualifier in Georgia on Sunday. The 38-year-old, who retired from international football after the euro 2012 finals, won his 126th senior cap in Wednesday

‘His attitude has been very positive’ night’s 2-0 friendly victory over Oman after returning to the fold. However, he will have to wait to see if O’Neill will retain him in Tbilisi at the weekend or stick with David Forde, who has been his firstchoice goalkeeper to date. O’Neill said: ‘He didn’t have very much to do. Someone asked if he is guaranteed a place in the starting line-up – absolutely not. ‘He did fine. He didn’t have anything to do, but for the last couple of days he has been excellent around the place. He has been very encouraging to

Mr Motivator: Shay Given

the other goalkeepers and to everyone else. ‘Actually, he has been very positive in terms of attitude. He’s not expected anything and that’s the way it will be.’ Given, who was replaced by Rob elliot at half-time, did not have a save of note to make as ireland won without having to be anywhere near their best. Goals from Kevin Doyle and Alex pearce either side of half-time were enough to secure the victory, although both David Meyler and Aiden McGeady hit the woodwork. The challenge will be significantly stiffer in Georgia, where O’Neill will turn to his big guns once again after fielding an experimental side at the Aviva. He said: ‘We have changed the side around so many times now just more or less to see what players can do, all with the one thing in mind: to try to get as prepared as possible for Sunday.’

Sexton had been widely tipped to return to Ireland after his second year in France, and has now made good on the rumours. the 29-year-old has struggled to settle in France and Ireland bosses were frustrated by their inability to control how frequently the 45cap outside-half sees action at his Paris club. ‘It’s a choice for my family, my international career and my extended family in Ireland,’ said Sexton. ‘I have a great rapport with everyone here, it was a very hard decision to make. ‘I haven’t spoken to any other French club other than Racing. now, I don’t want contract talk but to concentrate on Racing. I don’t regret at all coming to France or Racing, it has been an incredible experience. ‘I am pleased to be rejoining Leinster, the club where I started my professional career. I grew up playing my rugby in Leinster and always wanting to pull on the blue jersey so I am delighted to be able to return to play my club rugby in Ireland,’ he said

Sexton turned down a new long-term offer from Racing to complete his return home. the prolific goal-kicker remains in a fitness battle for Ireland’s autumn test series after breaking his jaw in top 14 action against toulon. Last season he was forced to play 13 games in 12 weeks after swapping Dublin for Paris, suffering a leg problem that threw his autumn series into doubt. Sexton came through that scare, but that left Ireland head coach Schmidt determined to bring his sole frontline star operating abroad – and outside of IRFU control – back home. Sexton admitted last term that he was struggling to adapt to life in France and has now confirmed his impending Leinster return. ‘Jonathan is one the best out-halves in world rugby and the IRFU are delighted that he will be playing his rugby in Ireland,’ said IRFU chief executive Philip Browne. ‘Irish rugby will benefit hugely from having a player of his calibre playing full-time in Ireland.’ Ireland will now hope that Sexton’s return will nudge a host of out-of-contract stars to sign new deals to remain at the country’s provinces next term for the crucial run to the World Cup. Shefflin primed for his 10th All-Ireland medal, says Comerford

Target: Henry Shefflin

Win, lOSe or draw this weekend, the chances are that Henry Shefflin will sit down at his hotel table on Monday morning and order himself a full irish. According to former colleague Martin Comerford, it’s an old ritual the game’s most iconic hurler has after Championship games, a sort of reward for the torturous regime he endures for weeks before games. Because approaching big matches, even at 35, and even with his starting place heavily in doubt

as it has been all summer, he ticks every last box to make sure he is at peak fitness. At times, Comerford acknowledged that his former

‘His commitment to fitness is frightening’ forward partner actually looks a little ‘gaunt’ in the face because of the amount of work he puts in. But he would never dare question the routine which has left Shefflin

on the verge of becoming the first ever player to land 10 senior Allireland medals. ‘His commitment to keeping himself fit and keeping in shape is actually frightening,’ said Comerford. ‘We all look at Henry and he looks a little bit gaunt from time to time. ‘That’s just the level of fitness he has because he really looks after his body. So far, Shefflin has been held in reserve, failing to start any of their five games – though coming on in the last four. The final team will be

confirmed tonight. Comerford knows a thing or two about the value of an impact sub in a game like Sunday’s. Back in 2009, he came on himself against Tipp and pinched a crucial goal that helped secure the four-in-a-row for the Cats. ‘it’d be an incredible achievement to get the 10,’ said Comerford. ‘i don’t know is he going to finish off his career after it. He could come back again.’
